What do you do when you have no concept of history or the high stakes of true evil? For some, you essentially deny the real terror of the Holocaust by comparing present-day American political figures to Hitler.

Actress-turned-ill-informed-tweeter Alyssa Milano (here) followed suit Saturday with a breathtaking post.

Her assertion? That Vice President Mike Pence’s Friday visit to a detention center at the border was tantamount to evil Nazi Heinrich Himmler surveying a WWII POW camp.

This, if I may say so, is about as inexcusably idiotic as anything a person could suggest:

An estimated 6,000,000 innocents died in the Holocaust. Men, women, and children were rounded up because of their bloodline and executed. Among other means, they were placed in gas chambers, cooked in ovens, shot, and used for shockingly cruel medical experimentation.

Border detention centers are placement centers for people breaking the law, knowing that the detention centers are there for people who break the law.

But to some people who — for an unknown reason — can’t process the notion that (not so) long ago, Adolf Hitler, Himmler, and others systematically set out to murder millions…

I can’t even finish that sentence. This entire trend is just too horrible to properly address.

Moral equivalence and the dumbing-down of a nation:

Uh, no. It’s not.

Not everyone responded with zero comprehension:

Here’s what Mike had to say, following his trip:

America has a problem at the border, and a problem with the border. Thus far, Washington hasn’t been willing to fix things.

I haven’t been to the detention centers, and I have no idea what issues there are in great need of attention.

But I do know the comparison of Trump or whichever contemporary U.S. official to Hitler warrants denouncement.

I’m unfazed by whatever someone may think about issues of government — we can all cheer and boo, and at the end of the day, to a fair degree, it’s only politics. But honestly, what Alyssa has shared here is, in my view, shameful.

Ignorance is a contagion. And spreading the notion that what happened in the past wasn’t so ghastly by suggesting what’s happening now is just as so…is a very dangerous thing.

I’ll close here with a statement from the United States Holocaust Museum in response to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s likening of border centers to Nazi concentration camps (here, here, and here):

“The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum unequivocally rejects efforts to create analogies between the Holocaust and other events, whether historical or contemporary. That position has repeatedly and unambiguously been made clear in the Museum’s official statement on the matter – a statement that is reiterated and reaffirmed now.”

For more cold water to the face, witness the real horror of innocents in ovens via this link, which tells of the deaths of 1.32 million in only three months during 1942.

‘Holocaust Denier’: Alan Dershowitz Excoriates Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for Her ‘Concentration Camp’ Remarks

Personally, I’ve been disturbed by the Left’s references to Hitler since the days of George W. Bush.

“He’s Hitler!” signs and bumper stickers would declare.

It’s become the put-down of choice, spreading — in my view — dangerous ignorance to an entire generation. Now, it seems, any Republican leader who comes across as egomaniacal or who leads a war or who merely has conservative leanings may be subject to the Adolf treatment.

In order to compare Trump to Hitler or the border to Nazis, one must A) not know what America does, B) not know what Germany did, or C) both A and B.

Apropos, Harvard Law School Professor Alan Dershowitz threw down on Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for her claim that America’s running “Never Again”-style concentration camps at the border.

In fact, Alan accused AOC in a radio interview last week of being a “Holocaust denier.”

There is a sort of logic to that.

For more on Alexandria’s Instagram video that ignited a firestorm of criticism from Survivors and Jewish groups among others, please see my coverage here, here, and here.

In her video Monday, she claimed the following:

“The United States is running concentration camps on our southern border, and that is exactly what they are — they are concentration camps. And, um, if that doesn’t bother you, I don’t, I don’t know, I like, we can have, okay whatever. I want to talk to the people that are concerned enough with humanity to say that ‘Never Again’ means something. The fact that concentration camps are now an institutionalized practice in the ‘Home of the Free’ is extraordinarily disturbing, and we need to do something about it.”

Here’s what Alan had to say on SiriusXM’s Breitbart News Tonight:

“Let nobody misunderstand what she was saying. When she used the words ‘concentration camps,’ what she meant to invoke was the Holocaust. She didn’t make distinctions between death camps and detention centers, between Dachau and Auschwitz. Even in the concentration camps that may not have been death camps, so many people died because they were forced laborers and everything like that. And of course, ‘Never Again’ is the direct invocation of the Holocaust.”

Alan’s analysis of denial:

“By making that comparison, she becomes a Holocaust denier, because what’s she’s saying is: ‘Gee, if all that Hitler did is what Trump is doing on the southern border,’ then there were no death camps, there were no killing squads, there was no genocide, there was no murder of a million-and-a-half babies, there were no selections where people were picked based on their health and whether they were twins and subjected to the most gruesome form of punishment.’”

As I said, there’s a certain logic to it. But if she can be said to have denied the Holocaust, then the same accusation must be laid at the feet of the media, social media users, and — yes — conservatives who’ve made similar allegations against select left-wingers.

Evil exists in 2019, and I have no doubt government can still be its instrument, But in my opinion, no one should accuse contemporary America or any of its current or past leaders of being Nazi Germany or Hitler. The 1930’s and 40’s saw an unprecedented evil arise. Millions of men, women, and children were rounded up at gunpoint — solely due to their heritage — and murdered en masse.

The victims of the Holocaust deserve our remembrance, respect, and reverence. And our understanding that there’s no way to understand what they endured. Their suffering should never be diminished by way of reference to lesser deeds.

Delving further, I invite you to read Gene Simmons’s powerful tribute to his mother — Holocaust survivor Flora Klein. She loved America, because she knew what it meant.

What do you think of all this? I look forward to learning in the Comments section.

Thank you for reading.

In Heavy-Handed Purge of Nazi Videos, YouTube is Deleting WWII Educational Videos Too

YouTube is facing a new wave of criticism after their new rules banning videos that promote Nazi ideology or Holocaust denial were put into effect in a way that resulted in educational videos used to instruct about World War II and the Holocaust being blocked as well.

A report by The Guardian interviewed several British history teachers who had seen their video channels featuring archival films from the WWII period deleted, and attempts to upload new content blocked. As The Guardian noted, in previous generations, teachers would often show VHS tapes in their classrooms, but most now rely on online content like YouTube for supplemental material.

Scott Allsop, a teacher at an international school in Romania, had his entire YouTube channel with hundreds of clips on European history from the Norman conquest to the Cold War taken down. Many of the clips were originally featured in BBC documentaries that are no longer easily available, and original archival videos of speeches by Adolf Hitler, Joseph Goebbels, and other well-known Nazi officials.

YouTube, which is owned by Google, sent Allsop an automated email saying his channel had been deleted because it included  “content that promotes hatred or violence against members of a protected group.”

“It’s absolutely vital that YouTube work to undo the damage caused by their indiscriminate implementation as soon as possible,” Allsop told The Guardian. “Access to important material is being denied wholesale as many other channels are left branded as promoting hate when they do nothing of the sort.”

After an appeal, Allsop was able to get his channel reinstated, but found the way YouTube’s automated process originally struck him down very frustrating, and contrary to YouTube’s stated goals for their anti-hate speech policies. YouTube’s appeals process is notoriously opaque, and users have a limited time to initiate an appeal or see their content permanently deleted.

“I fully support YouTube’s increased efforts to curb hate speech,” said Allsop, “but also feel that silencing the very people who seek to teach about its dangers could be counter-productive to YouTube’s intended goal.”

The MIT Technology Review reported on the controversy as well, noting that big tech companies have immense power as the “gatekeepers of material we consume online,” and the balance between allowing content and not promoting hate speech is a “fraught and complex” balance, with a very real “risk of unintended consequences when policies and algorithms are tweaked.”

Nonetheless, “[t]his complexity doesn’t excuse YouTube, which is owned by Google, of its responsibilities.”

As I wrote earlier this week, YouTube’s algorithm that recommends which videos you watch next has some critical vulnerabilities that cater to the prurient interests of pedophiles. It’s troubling that YouTube so far has refused to remedy some of the main issues, because to do so would likely impact their revenue.

It all comes back to the key point that these behemoth social media platforms have an enormous influence on the news, entertainment, and even educational content that we consume. My general tendency towards free market libertarianism recognizes YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, etc. are private companies, but the ongoing lack of transparency and clarity regarding their rules, and the impersonal, heavy-handed enforcement mechanisms that often operate using automated, difficult-if-not-impossible-to-appeal methods, is a growing problem that these companies have a moral duty to address.

For example, regarding YouTube, most social media platforms have ways to verify the identity of users. Allowing educators and students to verify their identities as associated with a college or school, perhaps through their institutional .edu email address, might be a solution that would clarify that a video of a Hitler speech is intended for educational purposes.

There is no way to purge Nazis from the internet entirely — Richard Jones-Nerzic, another history teacher quoted in The Guardian article noted that the comments sections of his videos were sometimes “hijacked by neo-fascists” — but purging the educational content that allows future generations to learn about the Holocaust is not the answer either. If we are serious about our commitment to the principle of “Never Again,” continuing to teach these historical periods is our solemn duty.

Russia’s D-Day message: You’re welcome

Westlake Legal Group molotov-ribbentrop-stalin Russia’s D-Day message: You’re welcome Vladimir Putin The Blog Soviet Union Russia Nazi Germany Molotov-Ribbentrop pact Joseph Stalin d-day Adolf Hitler

Some traditions never change. After the fall of the Soviet Union, some might have expected the Russian pretense to have beaten Hitler’s Germany nearly singlehandedly to have dissipated. Or at the very least, to have been met with an acknowledgment that the Soviets played a very large role in starting World War II in the first place.

Instead, the official Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs decided to run with this messaging while the West commemorated D-Day:

Russia told the West on Wednesday the Normandy landings on D-Day in 1944 did not play a decisive role in ending World War Two and that the Allied war effort should not be exaggerated.

Moscow’s comments might irk war veterans in Britain where the 75th anniversary on Wednesday of the largest seaborne invasion in history was marked at a ceremony in Portsmouth attended by Queen Elizabeth and world leaders including Donald Trump and Angela Merkel.

Speaking at a weekly news conference in Moscow, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova offered a tribute to those who died on the western front of World War Two and said Moscow appreciated the Allied war effort.

“It should of course not be exaggerated. And especially not at the same time as diminishing the Soviet Union’s titanic efforts, without which this victory simply would not have happened,” she said.

Ahem. It’s true that Russia had to contend with more German units than the Allies did in France. This ignores the fact that the Allies had fought the Nazis in North Africa and up the Italian peninsula for several years prior to D-Day, not to mention the naval warfare that the US and UK conducted. Furthermore, even after the Soviets allied with the US, UK, and Free France, they pointedly refused to declare war on Japan, where the US and the Commonwealth were committing massive forces against Hitler’s ally. Stalin declared war on Japan only after the bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in order to demand territorial gains.

Even apart from that, this ignores the fact that Stalin made a greedy agreement with Hitler to divvy up Poland. The Molotov-Ribbentrop pact in August 1939, a craven and disgusting act, guaranteed the start of World War II. Would Hitler have invaded Poland without the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact? Probably, but it would have meant keeping his eastern front prepared for a Soviet reaction. Instead, Hitler overran the Netherland, Belgium, and France … all without Stalin opening up a “second front.”

The Soviets made the mistake of not taking Hitler’s demand for lebensraum seriously and thought they could seize land on the cheap, until Hitler finally turned on Stalin when he thought the time was right. Until then, Stalin’s communist proxies in France, the UK, and the US argued not for a “second front” but for isolationism and a hands-off approach to the conflict in eastern Europe.

Only after Hitler invaded the Soviet Union did Stalin and the communists begin shrieking about a “second front,” ignoring the fact that the Brits had been fighting one in North Africa. (The US joined that front soon after Pearl Harbor.) The Italian campaign tied up a number of German units as well, especially after Mussolini ran out of Rome and the Italians switched sides. The allies attempted a smaller scale invasion force in 1943 at Dieppe to get what would be a third front in Europe, which turned out to be a disaster for the Canadian troops that got trapped there. It was the hard lessons learned at Dieppe as well as those in the Pacific theater that were eventually applied 75 years ago today in the successful D-Day operation.

There’s one other laughable aspect to Russia’s D-Day propaganda, too. The invasion was a massive effort to liberate other countries from the Nazi grip — not just France but also Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria, Czechoslovakia, and so on. The Russians fought valiantly after the Nazi invasion, but let’s not kid ourselves; they were fighting to free themselves. And when they did manage to push the Nazis out of Russia proper, the Soviets pushed through all of the states of eastern Europe, not to liberate them but to seize them and put them in their own iron grip. They kept those countries prisoner for more than forty years, too.

So what did we learn from Russia’s nostalgic tour through Stalinesque propaganda tropes? Probably that we should have invited Vladimir Putin to today’s ceremonies.

My Colleague, Alex Parker, posted here about Saturday’s shooting at Congregation Chabad, a synagogue located in Poway, Ca. The attack left one parishioner dead and three wounded.

According to reports from ABC News and CNN, the suspect, identified as John T. Earnest, published “an anti-Semitic and anti-Trump manifesto online” prior to the attack.

NBC News reported that “A user self-identifying himself (sic) as John Earnest posted a white nationalist open letter to the far-right message board 8chan. He also used the username “JohnTEarnest” to post the letter on a document hosting site.”

CNN reports that in the open letter posted to 8chan, in which “identifying as 19-year-old, John Earnest references killing Jewish people without making actual reference to Poway or the synagogue involved in the shooting.”

In the open letter, Earnest talks about planning the attack and references other attacks on houses of worship, including the attack on the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh as well the mosque shootings in Christchurch, New Zealand. Earnest also talks about his disdain for Jews and claims responsibility for a mosque fire in Escondido a week and a half after the attacks in Christchurch.

The suspect wrote:

Every Jew young and old has contributed to these. For these crimes they deserve nothing but hell. I will send them there.

and:

Make sure to call me a ‘white supremacist’ and ‘anti-semite’ or whatever bullshit you spew to spook the normal fags. It doesn’t even matter. You’ve been calling every White person alive those names for decades—they’ve lost all their meaning.

The shooter professes his hatred for President Trump and says he is “inspired by Adolf Hitler, Tree of Life Synagogue shooter Robert Bowers, and New Zealand mosque gunman Brenton Tarrant.”

Earnest also added a question and answer section in which, according to NBC News, “The shooter claims in the Q-and-A section to eschew political ideology, saying he does not support Donald Trump because of his support for Israel. The writer also complains that conservatives aren’t violent enough in support of their politics.”

One question asks, “Are you a Trump supporter?,” and answers, “You mean that Zionist, Jew-loving, anti-White, traitorous cocksucker? Don’t make me laugh.”

Another asks if the author is a “conservative?” He writes:

I am not a useless, spineless coward so no—I am not a conservative. Conservative is a misnomer. They conserve nothing. They’ll complain all they want but they won’t take up arms and threaten their government with death (the only thing that works). Ever heard about the Battle of Athens (1946)? Find your balls again you insufferable faggots. If you do not defend your rights you deserve none.

The suspect has no prior criminal record, however, the Los Angeles Times reports that he claims he “scorched a mosque in Escondido with gasoline a week after” the New Zealand mosque attack shootings, but that the worshippers “woke up and put out the fire pretty much immediately after I drove away which was unfortunate.”

A while back, it was debated whether or not the press should report the identities and stories of those who perpetrate these cowardly acts because it is the media attention they seem to crave the most. This idea has a great deal of merit.

Although it will pass quickly, Earnest is certainly receiving his fifteen minutes of fame.

However, the news cycle moves quickly, and soon, everyone will have long forgotten the twisted white supremacist. And this nineteen-year-old will spend the rest of his life languishing in prison reliving his moment of glory.

For a really serious British foreign policy failure, look at Chamberlain’s attempt to appease Hitler

Appeasing Hitler: Chamberlain, Churchill and the Road to War by Tim Bouverie

Some people saw from the first what Hitler was like. Neville Chamberlain was not, unfortunately, among them. As Duff Cooper, who in October 1938 resigned from the Cabinet over Munich, put it in a sketch of the Prime Minister written in early 1939:

“Chamberlain had never met anybody in Birmingham who in the least resembled Adolf Hitler. He had always found that the people he had met, whether in business or local government, were not very dissimilar to himself – they were reasonable and honest and it had always proved possible, with a certain amount of give and take, to make a deal with them that should prove satisfactory to both sides.”

Hitler was unreasonable and dishonest. Even if you made a deal with him, he would break it as soon as it suited him. He was a murderous opportunist and propagandist who in Mein Kampf, published in the mid-1920s, avowed his vicious hatred of the Jews and his conviction that the German race, and especially the German army, must be taught to believe in its own invincibility, and must fight its way to world mastery.

I confess that I have never read Mein Kampf. But the British Ambassador in Berlin from 1928-33, Sir Horace Rumbold, did read it, and in 1933 warned his masters in London of the sort of foreign policy Hitler, who had just taken power, could be expected to pursue.

Rumbold’s successor, Sir Eric Phipps, informed London at the end of 1934 that the Germans were “feverishly re-arming on land and in the air”, and went on:

“The impression left by the summer and autumn is one of incessant marching and drilling… We have to face the fact that, while other countries enjoy playing football or sipping coffee at little tables under trees, German youth is happiest playing at soldiers, and German manhood is happiest on the barrack square.”

How from 1933 did the British Government deal, or fail to deal, with the problem posed by a resurgent Germany being led towards catastrophe by a band of thugs, racists and careerists?

Tim Bouverie tells the story in 25 chapters, amounting to just over 400 pages. His account is lucid, fair-minded and authoritative, and should be read by anyone who thinks Brexit is difficult.

He favours unpublished over published sources, and is particularly good on the “amateur diplomats”, British society figures who deluded themselves into thinking that as long as they made friends with the Nazis, who possessed a sort of gangsterish attraction and were very keen on throwing parties, the cause of peace would be secured.

The more familiar parts of the story cannot be omitted: Chamberlain’s claim, for example, to be treading in the footsteps of Disraeli, bringing back from Germany “peace with honour” and “peace for our time”.

But the subject does not lose its fascination. However often one reads about it, one cannot stop wondering how it could all have been made to turn out differently.

Many accounts of Munich – one thinks of David Faber’s admirable volume – focus on the events of 1938. One of the strengths of Bouverie’s account is that it begins in 1933.

He brings out the constraints on British Government policy. Public opinion was imbued with the desire for peace. The First World War had been so horrific that ‘never again’ was the message.

There was almost no willingness to act on the ancient Roman maxim that if you wish for peace, you should prepare for war. Britain’s armed forces had been run down to a pitifully weak state.

And they had much more than Europe to think about. After the Japanese invaded Manchuria in November 1931, the British Chiefs of Staff noted, as Bouverie points out, that “our vast territorial and trade interests in the Far East, and our communications with the Dominions and India”, were horribly exposed.

In Europe, the French had the strongest army, and were the obvious ally with whom to confront a resurgent Germany. But as Bouverie says, the French had eight prime ministers between 1933 and 1939, lurching from one crisis to another, and had yielded, with the building of the Maginot Line, to a purely defensive mentality.

The French were wedded to the Versailles Treaty, which large parts of the British Establishment regarded as deeply unfair to Germany, and therefore in need of revision.

In March 1936, German troops reoccupied the Rhineland. In London, Anthony Eden, recently appointed Foreign Secretary, asked his taxi driver what he thought about this, and got the reply: “I suppose Jerry can do what he likes in his own back garden.”

The French nevertheless wanted joint action, under the auspices of the League of Nations, to uphold the Versailles and Locarno Treaties. Harold Nicolson, recently elected as a National Labour MP and no friend of appeasement, expressed in a letter to his wife, Vita Sackville-West, the dilemma facing the British:

“The French are not letting us off one jot or tittle of the bond… We are thus faced either with repudiation of our pledged word or the risk of war. The worst of it is that in a way the French are right. We know that Hitler gambled on this coup. We know that Schacht told him it would lead to financial disaster, that Neurath told him it would create a dangerous diplomatic situation, and that the General Staff told him that if France and Great Britain acted together there would be no chance of resistance. Thus if we send an ultimatum to Germany, she ought in all reason to climb down. But then she will not climb down and we shall have war. Naturally we shall win and enter Berlin. But what is the good of that? It would only mean communism in Germany and France, and that is why the Russians are so keen on it. Moreover, the people of this country absolutely refuse to have a war. We should be faced by a general strike if we even suggested such a thing. We shall therefore have to climb down ignominiously and Hitler will have scored… But it does mean the final end of the League and that I do mind dreadfully. Quite dreadfully.”

Winston Churchill and a few others saw that force, or the threat of force, was the only way to deal with the Nazis, and that rearmament must proceed with all possible urgency.

Most people would not see this, and Chamberlain, instead of trying to lead public opinion, in his autocratic way made himself the expression of the popular will, and convinced himself that at Munich he had prevailed on Hitler to see reason, and had obtained a lasting peace.

He was not alone in making this mistake. After Munich, he received a vast number of presents from a grateful public, including fishing rods and salmon flies, while a French newspaper opened a subscription to buy him a house in the French countryside near to a trout stream.

Chamberlain’s defenders say he had bought time in which Britain could build Spitfires and radar. Bouverie points out that the Germans used the time better, and that the ground had been cut from under the German opposition to Hitler.

Whether the German generals would have managed to get rid of their leader may be doubted. But presenting him with cost-free gains such as Czechoslovakia – or what seemed to be cost-free gains, for Hitler was actually leading the Germans as well as everyone else towards disaster – was imprudent as well as immoral.

Churchill gave his great warnings, but not many other Conservatives spoke up. Eden resigned as Foreign Secretary, because he could not stand being overridden by Chamberlain on the question of how to detach Mussolini from Hitler. But Eden did not then become, as some urged him, the leader of the anti-appeasers, for as Bouverie writes:

“Eden looked too good to be true and was. Although photogenic, conscientious and hard-working, he was also indecisive, timid and vain.”

By trying and failing so sincerely to buy Hitler off at the expense of the Czechs, Chamberlain did at least ensure that public opinion recognised the need for war when it came, but that was an accidental achievement, very far from the peace with honour which had been promised.

Owens didn’t take this lying down, and proceeded to verbally obliterate Lieu, pointing out his blatant lie about her. The response was so devastating that by the end of it, Lieu seemingly sat in stunned and awkward silence.

Apparently, the wound Lieu received is still making him sore, as he still attempts to defend himself by utilizing the same clip that doesn’t allow Owens the full explanation of what she was speaking about. He recently tweeted the clip to Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) after Crenshaw pointed out the response from Owens to Lieu.

Talk show host Dave Rubin, however, wasn’t having it. Since Lieu’s lie was already exposed, Rubin brought attention to the fact that he’s still beating the dead horse, and added that his monumental blunder and subsequent cowardice wasn’t at all covered by mainstream sources.

This prompted Lieu to respond with an “FYI” toward Rubin that linked to an opinion piece at the Washington Post which, unsurprisingly, wasn’t exactly kind to Owens. Why he thought this would turn the tide is anyone’s guess, but Rubin fired back.

Rubin asked Lieu a very simple “yes or no” question about whether or not he thinks Owens approved of what Hilter did to the Jews.

Lieu responded by stating he didn’t know what Owens believed but posted yet another article allowing another publication, this time from Jewish writers, with unfriendly things to say about Owens as a way to hide behind them.

Rubin was astounded and called Lieu out for his cowardice and made it clear that Lieu is definitely implying that Owens does indeed support Hitler’s treatment of the Jews.

To me, it seems Lieu’s actions look more like someone who knows he’s caught and won’t admit he messed up than someone who actually believes what he’s selling. Admitting he’s wrong at this point would look bad for him, and to his eyes the best bet is to continue to sell the lie as long as possible.

Looking at the responses on the internet, however, it would appear that nearly no one is buying the theatrics Lieu is trying to sell the public.

He, like some of his Democrat colleagues, seem to love being ratio’d.
