Will The UK Go Wobbly? Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt Sounds Like A Modern-Day Neville Chamberlain

Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt Sounds Like A Modern-Day Neville Chamberlain President Trump Iran's aggression in Strait of Hormuz Iran Front Page Stories Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt Foreign Policy Featured Story Energy donald trump Allow Media Exception

Iran’s naval forces captured two British oil tankers for alleged “marine violations” on Friday in the Strait of Hormuz. One vessel, the Mesdar, has been released and the other, the Stena Impero, remains in Iranian custody. There are 23 crew members on board whom are said to be of Indian, Russian, Latvian and Filipino descent.

Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt told the press that “no British citizens were understood to be on board either vessel.”

Hunt said the Stena Impero had been surrounded by “four vessels and a helicopter.” He added that the Mesdar, the vessel which had been released, “had been surrounded by ten speedboats.”

He told the press, “Our ambassador in Tehran is in contact with the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to resolve the situation and we are working closely with international partners.”

A government spokeswoman told the BBC that, “We have advised UK shipping to stay out of the area for an interim period.”

In a statement, Hunt said:

This is completely unacceptable. Freedom of navigation must be maintained. We are having an emergency meeting of the government’s Cobra Committee in a few minutes. We will respond in a way that is considered robust and we are absolutely clear that if this situation is not resolved quickly, there will be serious consequences.

We’re not looking at military options. We are looking at a diplomatic way to solve the situation, but we are very clear that it must be resolved. Freedom of navigation in the Gulf is absolutely essential. If that freedom of navigation is restricted, Iran is the biggest loser and so, it is in their interest to resolve this situation as quickly as possible. We will do everything we can to do that but as I say, there will be serious consequences if we’re not able to resolve it quickly.

His remarks sound rather toothless to me. He’s telling Iran right off the bat that a military option is off the table and that they plan to do nothing more than send another strongly worded statement condemning Iran’s aggression. Why would he say that publicly? Hunt sounds like a modern-day Neville Chamberlain.

I am certainly not advocating that the U.K. declare war on Iran. However, a strike or two on their naval targets to reduce the frequency of these incidents would be nice.

Shortly after Iran shot down a U.S. drone last month, several international shipping associations issued  recommendations against the use of armed security on board ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Concerned about unintended consequences, these organizations worried that an incident between a ship’s hired mercenaries and Iranian forces could touch off World War III.

I understand their logic, however, it would render all ships passing through the Gulf region defenseless against Iranian aggression.

It isn’t a coincidence that the Iranians backed away from a British tanker when they were confronted by a British warship earlier this week.

Several days ago, a report from Reuters London said that shipping companies had been hiring unarmed security guards “as an extra safeguard” to travel onboard ships passing through the region.

As an extra safeguard? Why bother? What good will unarmed security guards do when a ship is surrounded by ten weaponized Iranian speedboats?

Iran’s state news agency, Tasnim, reported early Saturday that the Stena Impero had been seized because it had struck an Iranian fishing vessel which is dubious. The newspaper quoted the Ports and Maritime Organisation of Iran:

We received some reports on the British oil tanker, Stena Impero, causing problems. We asked the military forces to guide this tanker towards Bandar Abbas port to have the required investigations carried out. The tanker was seized for breaking three regulations: shutting down its GPS; going through the exit of the Strait of Hormuz rather than the entrance; and ignoring warnings.

More likely, it is a response to Britain’s participation in the seizure of an Iranian oil tanker, the (Panama-flagged) Grace, off the coast of Gibraltar on July 4th. Britain said that if Iran could prove the Grace was not destined for Syria, which would be a violation of European Union sanctions, they would release it.

On Friday, however, a Gibraltar court extended the detention of the Grace by 30 days.

Iran’s Fars news agency reported that a spokesman for Iran’s Guardian Council, Abbas Ali Kadkhodaei, said, “the rule of reciprocal action is well-known in international law.” He added that they had acted on Thursday to “confront the illegitimate economic war and seizure of oil tankers is an instance of this rule and is based on international rights.”

Tensions in the region have been rising since Trump’s May 2018 decision to withdraw from Obama’s 2015 Iranian nuclear deal. The restoration of economic sanctions against Iran have crippled their economy. Trump’s further tightening of sanctions over a month ago dialed up the pressure even more.

Although Iranian officials deny it, U.S. intelligence believes the country destroyed two oil tankers last month, one Japanese and the other Dutch. Shortly afterward, Iran shot down a U.S. drone.

It was announced on Friday night that the US would send 500 troops as well as aircraft and air defense missiles to Saudi Arabia. According to the Washington Post:

The move has been in the works for many weeks and is not a response to Friday’s seizure by Iran of a British tanker.

King Salman approved hosting U.S. armed forces in the kingdom “to increase joint cooperation in defense and regional security and stability,” a statement in the state-run Saudi Press Agency said.

The U.S. has asked Mideast allies like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in past weeks to contribute financially and militarily to a Trump administration proposal called the Sentinel Program — a coalition of nations working with the U.S. to preserve maritime security in the Persian Gulf and keep eyes on Iran.

Certainly, leaders don’t want to telegraph their responses, but I think that a military strike on Iran’s naval facilities is called for. It will capture their attention. Iranians understand force.

FILE – This July 19, 1969 file photo shows U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy’s car being pulled from the water next to the Dike Bridge on Chappaquiddick Island in Edgartown, Mass. on Martha’s Vineyard. Kennedy’s passenger, 28-year-old Mary Jo Kopechne, was trapped in the car after it went off the bridge and died. (AP Photo, File)

This is one of those stories you read and think “No way. Did they really do that?” I’m sad to report to you that yes, the Associated Press really did leave out some highly relevant details in their tweet recognizing the 50th anniversary of the death of Mary Jo Kopechne.

But first, some background on what happened on Chappaquiddick Island in Massachusetts on July 18, 1969:

U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy’s Oldsmobile sedan veered off a narrow bridge on Chappaquiddick Island, an extension of the resort island of Martha’s Vineyard off Massachusetts, and plunged into a moonlit pond 50 years ago Thursday. His passenger, 28-year-old Mary Jo Kopechne, drowned.

Kennedy, 37, survived, but his presidential ambitions did not. The Massachusetts Democrat waited 10 hours to report the accident to police, and the “whys?” dogged him for the rest of his days.

[…]

Kennedy was driving after a party when his car flipped into the chilly waters, trapping Kopechne inside. She had been a campaign worker for Kennedy’s brother, Robert, who was assassinated the previous year in Los Angeles during California’s Democratic presidential primary.

Kennedy, who managed to free himself from the submerged vehicle, said he tried in vain to rescue Kopechne. He later described his failure to report the accident to police for 10 hours as “indefensible,” attributing the delay to exhaustion, shock and a concussion.

Kennedy also called his mistress Helga Wagner the morning after the incident instead of his wife Joan.

Kennedy, a Democratic party icon, wouldn’t serve a day of time for Kopechne’s death, instead going on to serve for decades in the U.S. Senate. His timeline of what he says happened that night has been under scrutiny since day one.

With all of that in mind, check out how the AP described what happened:

Oh, okay. So I guess it was the car that did something reprehensible, not Kennedy.

And “Kennedy was able to escape, but Kopechne drowned”? A better way to put it would be to say that “Kennedy was able to escape, but left Kopechne to die.”

Also, as Hot Air‘s Ed Morrissey points out, it was never determined exactly how Kopechne died – because an autopsy was not conducted:

It’s not true that Kopechne “drowned.” The coroner never autopsied the body, itself a curious omission when dealing with an unattended death of a healthy young woman. Eyewitness testimony by the person who recovered her body at the scene, as well as the position of the body, strongly suggests she suffocated after spending a significant amount of time exhausting the oxygen in the air bubble of the submerged car. Heavy covered this in the release of the film Chappaquiddick last year:

[…]

Reporting it as a drowning 50 years later is factually deficient, but that’s the least of the sins of this AP headline. Nowhere in this description is the fact that Kennedy was driving the car, and that he was speeding when he went off the bridge. Instead, the car mysteriously “went off a bridge” by itself, or perhaps with Kopechne at the wheel.

This is a more apt description of what happened than the AP‘s version :

Bonus take from Brit Hume:

As of this writing, the AP has not corrected their “report” in any later tweets.

Despite Democratic Claims, New Report Reveals 95% of Border Children Have Been Reunited with Family or Sponsors

A report from Republicans on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee reveals that the Trump administration’s reunited the vast majority of children at the border with their parents or a guardian.

Data from the Department of Health and Human Services indicates that 95% of kids released from custody have been “reunified with an individual sponsor or released to a parent.”

The document identifies more than 2,500 children separated at the border. According to the metrics — of 1,619 — 99% have been discharged.

From the report:

Of the 1,603 discharged children, 1,546 children—or 95 percent—were either reunified with an individual sponsor or released to a parent. Specifically, 1,061 children were released to a parent and 485 children were reunified with an individual sponsor,”

So what of the remainder?

Of the remaining 73 children who had not been reunited with an individual sponsor or released to a parent, HHS provided the following data:

Furthermore, the report corrects a misconception that 30 minors remain cruelly separated from their parents:

Although Democrats allege that 30 children remain separated from their families, these children remain separated largely because either the parents pose a danger to their child or the parents have expressed an intent not to reunify with their child.

We have problems at the border. And adults who’ve attempted to sneak into the country have been detained — as they were under Obama as well.

The situation is a mess. But thanks to the report for providing a better understanding of what’s going on amid the crisis.

Idiot of the Week: Actor Tom Arnold Tells Distinguished War Veteran Dan Crenshaw to Man Up (Seriously)

Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, left, listens as Office of Management and Budget Acting Director Russell Vought testifies before the House Budget Committee on Capitol Hill in Washington, Tuesday, March 12, 2019, during a hearing on the fiscal year 2020 budget. (AP Photo/Susan Walsh)

There’s something to be said for thinking about what you say before you say it.

Clearly that’s not a concept that actor Tom Arnold understands, because on Thursday he took a swipe at Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) that ripped a page right out of the “stuck on stupid” handbook.

The freshman Congressman posted a tweet on Thursday decrying the fact that liberals and Democrats take the fun and joy out of everything, especially when it comes to proud moments in American history and patriotism like the 50th aniversary of the Apollo 11 landing:

Arnold who, unlike Crenshaw , is a warrior in keyboard name only, jumped at the chance to suggest that Crenshaw man up and stop “blaming leftists” for “stupid sh*t no one would’ve noticed or cared about”:

Is it just me or did Arnold kinda sort make Crenshaw’s point about liberals taking the fun and joy out of everything?

In any event, the responses to Arnold’s tweet were priceless, but Red State‘s Bonchie had the one that probably hit closest to the mark:

Just for comparison’s sake, here are Crenshaw’s distinctions:

Dan graduated from Tufts University in 2006, where he earned his Naval officer commission through Navy ROTC. He immediately reported to SEAL training in Coronado, CA, where he met his future wife, Tara, just a few months later. After graduating SEAL training, Dan deployed to Fallujah, Iraq to join SEAL Team Three, his first of five deployments overseas.

On Dan’s third deployment in 2012, his life changed forever. After six months of combat operations, Dan was hit by an IED blast during a mission in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was evacuated and awoke from his medically induced coma learning that his right eye had been destroyed in the blast and his left eye was still present, but badly damaged. Dan was completely blind and the doctors did not believe he would ever see again. Tara stood by him every day and night, keeping faith and praying he would see again. After several difficult surgeries, he eventually regained sight in his left eye, a miracle according to the head surgeon. Dan refused to quit and went on to deploy twice more, first back to the Middle East in 2014 and then South Korea in 2016.

Dan was medically retired in September of 2016, after ten years in the SEAL Teams. He left service with two Bronze Stars (one with Valor), the Purple Heart, and the Navy Commendation Medal with Valor, among many other recognitions. Soon after, Dan completed his Master in Public Administration at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. In September of this year, he was back in Houston, volunteering for days on end in areas of Katy devastated by Hurricane Harvey. He saw first-hand the unthinkable losses that his neighbors suffered, but he also saw Texan grit and resilience. He wanted to do more, and this November Dan and Tara decided that the best way to serve the people of Texas would be in elected office.

And so he was.

Arnold, on the other hand, is a perpetually outraged left-wing actor and not-so-funny comedian best known for being Roseanne Barr’s ex.

Based on that information, it’s pretty clear who The Man is in this discussion. But I’ll leave that up to the readers to decide.

Book Chronicling the Insanity to Stop Brett Kavanaugh’s Confirmation Hits #1, But the Media Are All Crickets. Coincidence?

As you may have heard via conservative channels, there’s a hot new book on the New York Times Best Seller list: Carrie Severino and Mollie Hemingway’s Justice on Trial chronicles the hysteria-soaked Supreme Court confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh.

Wanna tiptoe through the tulips of derangement? Here ya go:

The Kavanaugh Explosion And The Supreme Dangers Of Step Stupid

New York Witches Schedule Event To Cast A Hex On Brett Kavanaugh And Other Rapists

In Light Of Kavanaugh, Nut On MSNBC Predicts A Possible ‘Thousand-Year Reich’

There was certainly enough meat on that bone to fill a book — the abject insanity that surrounded the hearings was so bizarre that just thinking of it is making me need a nap.

Who also seems to have gone to sleep: the media.

The press hasn’t seemed interested in the book’s success, despite its place at #6 in the NYT rankings and its #1 snag on Amazon before it was even available.

As reported by the Washington Examiner, the book was released July 9th, and it’s been crickets over at CNN, MSNBC, the AP, The Washington Post, CBS, and NYT.

Perhaps the silence is explained by National Review’s write-up of JOT, the headline for which was “The Plot Against Kavanaugh.”

From their review:

Many of these accusations were disproved immediately, but only after the media breathlessly reported them as worthy of consideration. The Rhode Island accuser admitted the story was false after the FBI looked into it, and more followed suit once their stories were exposed as frauds. But others hung on, and the Ford letter became the focus. The authors’ recounting of the tedious negotiations between Ford and Grassley just to get her to appear recalls the tension of those weeks and take the reader back to the craziness of the time.

The interest groups, protesters, mainstream media, and many of the Democratic senators themselves joined in a campaign to speak directly to the voters about defeating Kavanaugh — or anyone else Trump nominated. It was reminiscent, in some ways, of Trump’s 2016 campaign, in which he talked past reporters to address the voters directly through social media. But the Democrats were aiming at the wrong target. Their scattershot blasts of anti-Kavanaugh messages energized their base, but that base had already had their say and would not vote again until November. Even the Democrats could not stretch things out that long.

Co-author Mollie lamented the lack of MSM coverage:

“The New York Times’ first mention of our exhaustively reported and heavily researched book about the most important thing that happened to the country last year was when they had to place us on their best seller list. It is a sad reminder that many in the media are not interested in journalism but progressive advocacy.”

The Examiner noted such media mumness isn’t new:

It is a typical story, however, for some conservative books. For example, conservative talk show host Mark Levin’s latest, Unfreedom of the Press, was also ignored by media big shots, but debuted as the New York Times No. 1 best seller.

If you’ve got the energy to relive one of the last decade’s most mentally ill chapters in American politics, get your copy of the hardcover here.

And when you can, by the way, shop Jet.com. They’re an alternative to Amazon, and they’re fantastic. Customer service = A+.

Cruz & Cassidy Introduce a Resolution Labeling Antifa a Terrorist Organization, But Here’s Why It’s Ridiculous

Westlake Legal Group hand-2593747_1280-620x418 Cruz & Cassidy Introduce a Resolution Labeling Antifa a Terrorist Organization, But Here’s Why It’s Ridiculous washington D.C. Violence Uncategorized Texas Ted Cruz republicans Media Louisiana law Judicial Front Page Stories Featured Story Fascism democrats Culture crime Congress civility Bill Cassidy antifa Allow Media Exception

On Thursday, Senators Ted Cruz and Bill Cassidy introduced a resolution to formally label violent pro-fascism group Antifa a domestic terrorist organization.

It should be noted: That’s exactly what they are.

A catalyst for the move — though it wasn’t needed — was the Tacoma, Washington attack of a border detention center, wherein 69-year-old Willem Van Spronsen appeared with a rifle and tried to ignite a large propane tank.

Now-deceased Willem did manage to set fire to a car, and far-left Twitterers — twits for short, if you will) hailed him a martyr and a hero (here-o)

Another recent Antifa assault: The beating of conservative journalist Andy Ngo in Portland, which reportedly left him with a bleeding brain (here).

Ted Cruz explained via tweet:

“Antifa is a terrorist organization composed of hateful, intolerant radicals who pursue their extreme agenda through aggressive violence. Time and time again their actions have demonstrated that their central purpose is to inflict harm on those who oppose their views. Like any terrorist organization they choose to pursue their political ends through violence, fear & intimidation. They must be stopped. I’m proud to introduce this resolution w @SenBillCassidy to properly identify what Antifa are: domestic terrorists.”

Yes, they are.

And fascists.

Mr. Cassidy of Louisiana offered his own social media statement:

“Antifa is a domestic terror organization. This is a group of hateful, intolerant radicals pursuing their extreme agenda through violence. They are masked bigots, attacking others b/c they don’t agree with their ideas. The time to stop Antifa is NOW!”

On Bill’s official site, he notes the goofiness of having an ironic name:

“Antifa are terrorists, violent masked bullies who ‘fight fascism’ with actual fascism, protected by Liberal privilege.”

The resolution contains 5 points:

Now, therefore, be it resolved, that the Senate—

(1) calls for the groups and organizations across the country who act under the banner of Antifa to be designated as domestic terrorist organizations;
(2) unequivocally condemns the violent actions of Antifa groups as unacceptable acts for anyone in the United States;
(3) expresses the need for the peaceful communication of varied ideas in the United States;
(4) urges any group or organizations in the United States to voice its opinions without using violence or threatening the health, safety, or well-being of any other persons, groups, or law enforcement officers in the United States; and
(5) calls upon the Federal Government to redouble its efforts, using all available and appropriate tools, to combat the spread of all forms of domestic terrorism, including White supremacist terrorism.

That’s all fine and good. But the reality is that none of this should be necessary. True — the U.S. can’t have a bunch of black-masked goons running around committing assault and arson. But we already have a “resolution” for that: It’s called law enforcement; court; prison. A system to prevent violent fascism is already in place. None of these hooligans should’ve been allowed to do what they’ve done, from the outset.

And if city and state officials aren’t willing to stop them now, because they haven’t been willing to stop them yet, how will a resolution make a difference?

The scenario reminds me of Alyssa Milano’s Christmas gift to the world — wherein she forgot there are police (here).

Thus far, it seems authorities and the media have sat back and allowed the fascism of Antifa to rule any street upon which they’ve decided to idiot.

Don Lemon’s given them a pass (here), and if you need a reminder of the insanity, please, please watch this interview.

The issue of Antifa isn’t about Left or Right, Democrat or Republican; it’s about liberty and public safety.

The government needs a resolution, alright, but not the congressional kind. It needs the resolve to stop the insane fascism of violence in the public square, regardless of who’s committing it.

BREAKING. Iran Seizes British Tanker in the Persian Gulf

Westlake Legal Group irgc-speed-boat-620x317 BREAKING. Iran Seizes British Tanker in the Persian Gulf Terrorism stena impero Persian Gulf Iran International Affairs Great Britain Front Page Stories Allow Media Exception

FILE – In this July 2, 2012 file photo, an Iranian Revolutionary Guard speedboat escorts a passenger ship, near the spot where an Iranian airliner was shot down by a U.S. warship 24 years ago killing 290 passengers in Persian Gulf. While U.S. President Donald Trump angered Iran with his speech on refusing to re-certify the nuclear deal, Tehran won’t walk away from it in retaliation. (AP Photo/Vahid Salemi, File)

A couple of weeks ago, British Marines boarded an Iranian-owned, Panamanian-flagged tanker in the coastal waters of the British territory of Gibraltar. The tanker was carrying Iranian oil bound for Syria. This was a good thing. Both activities were illegal and to a certain extent Tehran was daring Britain to do anything. The Iranians befouled their man-dresses and rather than telling them to shut up or ignoring them altogether, the so-called government of Theresa May has done its best to mollify the Iranians by assuring them that they were only concerned about the destination of the oil, not its origins.

The Iranians made noises that led observers to believe that they intended to take a similar British ship hostage. As a result, a single British frigate was dispatched to the Persian Gulf. Earlier this week a second one was sent there. Keep in mind this represents over 10% of the surface combatants in the Royal Navy.

Just a short while ago, this weakness was brought to the fore as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the IRGC, seized a British flagged tanker, the Stena Impero.

To paraphrase Wellington, I hope that scares the Iranians because it terrifies me.

I’d be pleasantly surprised if we see anything but an abject surrender by May’s government on this. Even if they wanted to do something they can’t. When you’re weak and act like you’re weak, you get what you deserve.

This does up the ante for the United States and for CENTCOM. If Iran feels comfortable snatching the ships of a major US ally with no repercussions, it will, as surely as night follows day, escalate the situation.

UPDATE. Did I say escalate?

Verbal MOAB: Watch as Marco Rubio Lays Waste to “Self Righteous Hypocrites” in the Media and Democratic Party

After a week of mainstream media outlets and Democrats alike (but I repeat myself) demanding Republicans respond with the “appropriate” condemnation of Trump’s controversial “Squad” tweets from Sunday and the “send her back” crowd chant from a North Carolina Trump rally on Wednesday, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) has had enough.

In a video posted to his Twitter feed on Thursday, Rubio talked about the media’s and left’s double standards when it comes to incendiary political comments and their demands for reactions. He also noted the media/left’s long history of falsely labeling Republican presidents and presidential candidates “racists” – including Republicans like Sen. Mitt Romney (UT) and the late Sen. John McCain (AZ), who they now claim to respect.

Fox News reports:

“So this is how it’s been working, the president says something and people cringe because you don’t like it, but then the other side- these left-wing politicians, people on the media, they go crazy with their outrage,” Rubio began his video message. “And they demand that you immediately answer what he said and answer the way they want you to answer.”

The Florida Republican then listed several examples of previous GOP presidents and presidential candidates like Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush, John McCain, Mitt Romney, who “these same people” called “racist.”

“These are the same people, by the way, who one of their members of Congress from their party says that support for Israel is ‘all about the Benjamins’ and they couldn’t even pass a resolution condemning anti-Semitism by itself, but it took them less than 72 hours to pass a resolution condemning the president of the United State’s tweet as racist,” Rubio said.

He continued, “The hypocrisy, the self-righteousness outrages people too. And on top of it, you have these members, who are all Americans… but they’re also political bullies. They go around attacking people, calling other Democrats just like southern segregationists, but when you hit them back, it’s ‘because they’re women of color.’”

He concluded by asserting that he wasn’t “playing this game anymore.”

Watch the full video of Rubio’s remarks below:

Rubio’s rant was on point. He’s right that the hypocrisy of Democrats when it comes to practicing what they preach is staggering. And the frequent “women of color” card-playing is absurd, ridiculous, and insulting. Or, as Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) would say, “a really cheap shot.”

Perhaps most annoying and troubling of all is how the mainstream media joins in on the Democratic chorus as they water down the definition of the word “racism” to mean “Republican who disagrees with a person of color”, or “Republican who responds to attacks from persons of color.” Or, more to the point, simply “Republican.”

It’s shameful they’ve done this to the word, because real racism unfortunately still exists and will always exist in some form or another. But the media/left’s degrading the meaning of the word have made it so that real victims of racism and racial attacks will be doubted more often than not.

It’s a shame, and we can thank Democrats and their media accomplices for steering the country in that direction.

Josh Hawley Is Accused Of Anti-Semitism Because the Left Can Hear Dog Whistles

Earlier in the week, Missouri Senator Josh Hawley was the keynote speaker at the what was billed as the National Conservatism Conference. The conference was not a national conference of movement conservatives but a inaugural meeting to discuss where the more traditional view of conservatism has failed. This is the way that National Review snarkily described it:

Discerning the existence of an “intellectual Trumpism” has been a preoccupation of the chattering classes for the past couple of years. At a conference in Washington, D.C. this week, that movement began to take clearer shape under the banner of National Conservatism.

What is National Conservatism? For three days, starting on Sunday and continuing through Tuesday, an impressive group of academics, journalists, and political figures from across the American Right gathered in the ballrooms of a D.C. Ritz-Carlton to ponder that question. They aim to establish institutions guided by the sentiments that led to Brexit and Donald Trump’s victory in 2016. Yoram Hazony, a political philosopher who published a book called The Virtue of Nationalism last year and organized the conference, described the three-day event as “the coming together of diverse bands of conservatives.” Talks that toggled between anti-libertarians and Calvin Coolidge scholars, isolationists and defense hawks, Silicon Valley venture capitalists and long-time social conservatives put that diversity on full display.

Despite this plurality of views, or maybe because of it, a common understanding of conservative nationalism took shape at the conference: The nation is the most logical vessel for political organization known to man, and supranational entities threaten the social attachments that allow for human flourishing. Those attachments have been frayed by decades of unfettered capitalism and inattention to traditional social structures, like the family and organized religion.

Speaker after speaker called for stronger government intervention in the economy, almost uniformly rejecting libertarian principles. Tucker Carlson, one of the keynote presenters, received a warm reception for his theory of the case, evidently shared by the conference hall. “The main threat to your ability to live your life as you choose does not come from the government anymore, but it comes from the private sector,” the Fox News host said. Senator Josh Hawley (R., Mo.) entranced the crowd with bromides against a “cosmopolitan consensus” boosted by woke progressives and conservatives with too much faith in markets.

I have to admit I’m much more sympathetic to this world view than I am to the views of either libertarians or movement conservatives. I think that conservatives have, in many ways, bought into the libertine views of the Cato-types in regards to drug use and buggery and “tolerance.” They have become entirely willing to let corporations control speech in a way they would never countenance government control. And they have created a god out of consumerism. They have been willing to help the left drive Christianity from the public square and turn a society that was once famed for its faithfulness into one where you can get fired or driven into bankruptcy for being a Believer. Hawley has, along with Ted Cruz, become an absolute rock star, in my view, it trying to slam the door on the ability of Big Tech to control our politics and manipulate our lives and in standing up for the principle that the primary goal of he United States is to make lives for its citizens better.

This was Hawley’s speech.

Here is the complete text.

Here are the highlights.

No, the great divide of our time is between the political agenda of the leadership elite and the great and broad middle of our society. And to answer the discontent of our time, we must end that divide. We must forge a new consensus.
,,,
That work begins with a clear assessment of where we stand.

For years the politics of both Left and Right have been informed by a political consensus that reflects the interests not of the American middle, but of a powerful upper class and their cosmopolitan priorities.

This class lives in the United States, but they identify as “citizens of the world.” They run businesses or oversee universities here, but their primary loyalty is to the global community.

And they subscribe to a set of values held by similar elites in other places: things like the importance of global integration and the danger of national loyalties; the priority of social change over tradition, career over community, and achievement and merit and progress.

Call it the cosmopolitan consensus.

On economics, this consensus favors globalization—closer & closer economic union, more immigration, more movement of capital, more trade on whatever terms. The boundaries between America and the rest of the world should fade and eventually vanish.

The goal is to build a global consumer economy, one that will provide an endless supply of cheap goods, most of them made with cheap labor overseas, and funded by American dollars.

But it’s about more than economics. According to the cosmopolitan consensus, globalization is a moral imperative. That’s because our elites distrust patriotism and dislike the common culture left to us by our forbearers.

Theodore Roosevelt once wrote that “the Roman Republic fell” when “the sturdy Roman plebeian, who lived by his own labor, [and] who voted without reward according to his own convictions” ceased to exist. Our present-day leaders seem determined to repeat the experiment.

Is it any surprise that in the last half century, as our leaders have pursued a program the American middle does not espouse, does not support, and does not benefit from, that public confidence in American government has collapsed?

Is it any wonder that American voters regularly tells pollsters they feel unheard, disempowered and disrespected?

Because who now listens to the American middle? The cosmopolitan agenda has driven both Left and Right.

The Left champions multiculturalism and degrades our common identity. The Right celebrates hyper-globalization and promises that the market will make everything right in the end, eventually … perhaps.

In truth, neither political party has seemed much interested in the American middle for quite a long time. And neither has seemed much interested in the republic the middle sustains.

But the old political platforms have grown stale. And the old political truisms now ring hollow. The American people are demanding something different, and something better.

It’s time we ended the cosmopolitan experiment and recovered the promise of the republic.

I find it hard to disagree with this. The “cosmopolitan experiment” has, as Hawley implies, created a class dependent upon government largess for their survival. It is creating the “bread and circuses” of dying Rome. It fuels out of wedlock births, drug and alcohol abuse, and all manner of social pathologies because a life without purpose is a life wasted. A whole culture of globalism, espousing the exact same views as Hawley describes, has been on public display since at least the mid-1980s. Books have been written about it being an imperative if we are to usher in some Age of Aquarius where the world is at peace and everyone is above average. None of this was controversial in anyway until Hawley’s speech. Now it is.

If you follow the link you’ll find that someone writing at something called “PRI.org” claims ‘Cosmopolitan’ is a dog whistle word once used in Nazi Germany and Communist Russia.

In this article the target is an actual Jew, Trump adviser Stephen Miller. Consider that for a moment.

There is more.

Dafuq??…as the kid’s say.

And Hawley quotes a woman who is an adult convert to Judaism

No thought is given by this assclown to the possibility that she was quoted because she’s a scholar who has written in opposition to nationalism.

We no longer live in the era of Hitler’s Germany nor, no thanks at all to the Democrats and the American left, the USSR.

Anti-semitism is endemic on the left and that is why they are so quick to hear these dog whistles that no one else heres. The thing about dog whistles is that if you hear them, you’re the f***ing dog.

Rassmussen Poll ShOne-Thirdhird of Democrats Believe Criticism of POC Members is Racism; Fewer People Believe Them as a Result

CBS News

New poll shows the “racist” charge in not simply policy, but ingrained in the party.

It stands to reason that when a party uses identity politics as its core belief system then the positioning of every issue as being racial will be held by growing numbers of members. Following a week where the charge of racism has been levelled at the president regarding his comments about the select members of Congress the discussion has been pointed, and inflammatory.

While Trump’s tweet-storm was ill-advised (or, more accurately, the result of no advisory on his account) the automatic charge of “racism” has raised some questions. Since he had named no one specific – he alluded to a group – and other aspects of his comments can also be parsed, the question would be, “To what race was he being intolerant?” Is merely having disagreeable words with select members enough to be constituted as “racist”?

For a large number of Democrats that answer is “Yes”. Rassmussen just conducted a poll and the returns showed that a significant segment of party members consider merely being critical is enough to earn the accusation of intolerance.

Voters are closely divided over whether President Trump is a racist, but one-in-three Democrats think it’s racism any time a white politician criticizes a politician of color.

Note the significance here; it is not racially-charged language itself, but any criticism is considered racist. This reflects on what we have been seeing play out in the media for months now since the mid-term election. Anytime policy ideas have been challenged, or some of the many factual errors which these freshman members have discussed are pointed out there has been a knee-jerk reaction that it is rooted in racism, or sexism – or even both.

Tellingly, within this same poll, it is seen that this tactic is not having the intended effect. It is important to note, the poll was conducted on July 15-16, the days following Trump’s tweets and right in the midst of the media firestorm. Despite that emotionally-charged environment the number of people who believed Trump to be racist actually dropped in comparison to a previous poll with similar questioning.

In the poll 47% of respondents believed the President to be racist, which was down 3% from a similar poll held in January. Additionally, more believed the President is not racist (49%) and those believing the use of racism is being done for political gain rose by 6% from that earlier survey. These are the revealing metrics in this poll.

Understand, the respondents were asked about these issues during the Democrat and media effort to establish Trump’s words were deeply racist. Yet while they loudly trying to sell the nation on this notion the result was fewer people believing he is racist, and more people seeing this as a purely political effort to smear him. That is a detail very few in the media are going to be pointing out.
