Newt Gingrich: We’re in a space race with China – We must win to protect our economic and national security

As the 2020 election campaign heats up, our trade conflict with China evolves, and we all become absorbed in other world events, it’s important that we do not lose track of a critical opportunity America has now to continue to lead the future of space travel.

Frankly, we are potentially at a turning point that could determine the future of our country – and all humankind. This is the topic of this weeks’ episode of my “Newt’s World” podcast.

As our legacy space companies and NASA continue to fumble around and protect their prized projects, China is aggressively seeking to overcome the United States as the dominant space- faring nation.

MOON AND MERCURY MAY HAVE THICK DEPOSITS OF ICE, STUDY SUGGESTS

China has put a rover (and a satellite relay) on the far side of the moon. It is investing heavily in its launch capabilities (while trying to kill international competition with exorbitant subsidies and noncompetitive financing plans), and it is presently working on a space-based solar power system which could revolutionize life on Earth.

More from Opinion

It’s true, America is home to a host of enterprising entrepreneurs who are seeking to lead in space. Blue Origin, SpaceX and others are making rapid advancements that are lowering the cost of launch.

We also have companies like Solaren working on space-based solar power and other important breakthroughs. But I’m concerned about whether these companies will be able to compete against a slew of state-sponsored Chinese businesses that aren’t concerned with making a profit.

I’m not saying China is on the cusp of leading in space soon – we still have a significant advantage in terms of capabilities and current assets in space. But the Chinese Communist Party is working at a much faster clip than we are currently.

This is why President Trump’s effort to develop the moon and Mars is so important. The president – as well as Vice President Mike Pence – knows that leadership in space is a vital American effort. Notice: I didn’t say Republican or Democratic effort – I said American.

The United States has largely mastered low-earth orbit (LEO) that is where most of our satellites and the International Space Station reside. But the country that masters cislunar orbit (the area of space between Earth and the moon) will have the new high ground – in both a security and economic sense.

Economically, that country will be able to set the rules for future space commerce. Militarily, that country could have direct ability to target, cripple, or destroy important space-based in LEO assets (such as GPS, communications, and missile detection systems).

From cislunar space, that country could potentially do the same to terrestrial targets on Earth – without any meaningful resistance.

This is why it’s so important that America leads in the future of space.

I hope you will listen to this week’s episode and understand how critical this moment in history could be.

Space travel, exploration, and utilization will fundamentally change our lives and the future of all mankind. That future can be extraordinarily positive – or it could potentially be very dangerous.

An Australian Instagram influencer has revealed she is quitting social media after receiving a barrage of hateful comments about her body.

Ariella Nyssa took to her Instagram this morning, posting unedited photos of her booty, to explain she feels like “crap” because people have said her body is too “real” to be a model.

WOMAN SLAMMED FOR CROWDFUNDING BUTT LIFT AFTER FREE NOSE JOB SCANDAL

Nyssa, who is well known for fighting for acceptance and representation of bodies of all shapes and sizes, had recently spoken out about the fact brands refuse to work with her because of her size.

In the Instagram post, the Sydney model explained she’d had the “worst f—ing day” after receiving hateful comments and personal messages about her body.

“WHY IS SOCIAL MEDIA LIKE THIS. Why are brands trying to make us feel like crap if we don’t represent their ‘ideal’ interpretations of bodies,” Nyssa said.

“I actually cannot believe that this has gone on for so long and I’m so angry with myself for accepting this as the norm for years.”

As a result, she said she received a barrage of hateful abuse from strangers telling her she was “having a whine” because she wasn’t happy with the way she looked.

For someone who regularly posts honest snaps and has built a social media following of more than 260,000 doing so, Nyssa said in a separate Instagram Stories post that she had built a tolerance to hateful comments.

“I never get upset about hate comments because they’re so common on my photos, but I realized this week — why do I have to get used to comments about my body,” she said, adding she had decided to quit social media to de-stress.

“I am just in shock … I am taking a little break from Instagram this weekend. I need to get off it, de-stress and not think about it because it’s made me really angry and I am really obsessing over it,” she explained.

“It’s really making me go a bit crazy and reading some of these hate comments I am baffled that society has come to this point.”

In a series of images she posted alongside her lengthy post, Nyssa said they were some of her most “hated” by followers.

“And you know what’s ironic? They are probably my FAVOURITE out of them all.”

She said the “ridiculous” comments showed exactly how much impact the industry and social media had on our minds.

“Shouldn’t we all feel beautiful enough to wear clothing from ALL brands. How ridiculous. I didn’t realize how bad all of this was until this week,” Nyssa said.

A teen in Williamsburg, Virginia was involved in a near-fatal car crash where the car landed on his body—and then his head.

According to CBS News, Juan Spence was on life support at MCV Hospital after having part of his skull removed due to swelling. Doctors gave Juan a 5 percent chance of living.

HOW AN ARGENTINE WOMAN GAVE BIRTH WHILE IN A COMA

Even still, Juan’s mother and father, Elizabeth and Alex Butler, held onto faith that their son would pull through.

Elizabeth began praying to God as soon as she heard about the accident, CBS News reported.

Juan had been riding in his friend’s car near his school when the accident occurred. Without his seatbelt on, the teen was ejected from the car where it then rolled on top of him, the report stated.

Despite the odds, the Butlers told the doctor that God would determine what would happen to their son. The parents, who are both ministers, believed he would pull through.

Now over a year later, Juan can stand, walk, talk and even work out at local Williamsburg gym Frame Fitness. The gym has posted several videos of the teen performing workouts his doctors thought he’d never be able to do, including a weighted leg exercise.

Juan stated in the CBS News report that he knew God was fighting for Him. The crash had given him renewed faith. However, Juan likely had many physical and mental challenges to overcome after the accident. According to Aurora Health Care, even minor accident injuries can take weeks to heal.

Then, there’s the mental trauma that many people forget to account for. A traumatic accident can cause anxiety, depression and even post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for accident victims.

The health clinic considers even a mild concussion to be a traumatic head injury, much less an injury involving direct contact with the car. About 7,000 people are involved in car accidents each day, states Aurora Health Care.

Thankfully, Juan was one of the lucky survivors of such a traumatic incident.

Trump says French wine may face ‘100 percent tariff’ in response to tax on US tech firms: report

How serious is President Trump about firing back at France over its new tax on U.S. technology? Maybe as much as 100 percent.

During his visit to New York’s Hamptons for a fundraiser Aug. 9, the president reportedly told attendees he was thinking about hitting France where it may hurt most – by slapping a 100 percent tariff on French wine.

The president’s remarks, which two sources relayed to Bloomberg, were a follow-up to a Twitter message in late July, in which Trump wrote the U.S. planned “a substantial reciprocal action” against France for its digital tax on American tech.

TRUMP VOWS RETALIATORY TARIFF ON FRANCE, SLAMS ‘FOOLISH’ TAX ON AMERICAN TECH GIANTS

That week, French President Emmanuel Macron approved what was called a digital services tax — a 3 percent levy that targets global companies worth at least 750 million euros ($834 million) and 25 million euros in France. It will be retroactively applied from early 2019 and could generate up to 400 million euros per year for France.

Trump immediately denounced the French plan.

“If anybody taxes them, it should be their home Country, the USA,” Trump’s tweet said.

This coming Monday the U.S. Trade Representative’s office is scheduled to hold a public hearing with American tech leaders about the potential impact of France’s tax, the Bloomberg report said. Depending on their comments, trade boss Robert Lighthizer could recommend that Trump impose tariffs on France in response.

In his July tweet, Trump concluded with the line, “I’ve always said American wine is better than French wine” – even though Trump has claimed over the years that he never drinks alcohol.

“It might be on wine, it might be on something else,” Trump then told reporters about his plan.

Because France is part of the European Union, it’s unclear how Trump could specifically target the country without ensnaring the entire bloc.

Rep. Dan Lipinski: Dems and GOP should work together to end immigration crisis and support Border Patrol

I recently took an unpopular position for a Democratic member of Congress, in defiance of House leadership.

Before I voted for a bill that would set humanitarian standards for individuals in the custody of Customs and Border Protection – legislation I believe in – I voted for a Republican “Sense of Congress” amendment. The amendment commended the men and women of the U.S. Border Patrol “for continuing to carry out their duties in a professional manner.”

Though I was an outlier as a Democrat, I knew my vote in support of Border Patrol agents was the right thing to do, following my recent trip to the U.S.-Mexico border with the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus.

NUMBER OF MIGRANTS AT SOUTHERN BORDER DROPS BELOW 100K AMID INCREASED COOPERATION BY MEXICO

Last month I joined 16 other Democrats and Republicans on a trip that included visits to the border at the Rio Grande, as well as tours of a nonprofit care center for unaccompanied teenagers and an immigrant processing facility in McAllen, Texas.

More from Opinion

The tours and opportunities to speak with immigrants and CBP agents were not only part of a fact-finding mission, but also a chance to learn more so we can work on bipartisan solutions to help address the humanitarian crisis.

The plight of the immigrants was what stood out to me the most. Many of those we saw were children. Seeing them and hearing just a little bit of their stories was heart-rending.

I was moved by what I observed and left with a better understanding of what immigrants, those caring for them, and Border Patrol officers are all facing.

What I witnessed was everyone involved trying to make the best of an extremely difficult situation. The unprecedented number of asylum-seeking immigrants attempting to enter our country has forced CBP agents to take on roles that are very different than the primary one they were hired to do, which is protecting the border. We must remember that. The job of CBP is to protect national security.

CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR OPINION NEWSLETTER

I’d be remiss if I failed to recognize that a few CBP employees have failed to live up to the standards we expect. But during my visit I witnessed agents carrying out heroic work in very difficult circumstances. The vast majority are good-natured, hardworking men and women who are sympathetic to the plight of immigrant families.

The plight of the immigrants was what stood out to me the most. Many of those we saw were children. Seeing them and hearing just a little bit of their stories was heart-rending. I strongly believe it is not just an American value but a basic human value to uphold the dignity of every individual.

The House took the right step in that direction in June when we passed a $4.5 billion emergency appropriations bill to help those caring for the immigrants. The bill was not perfect, but it had broad bipartisan support and provided immediate resources when there was no time to wait.

During our visit, many CBP agents thanked all of us in the Problem Solvers Caucus for our work to help pass the $4.5 billion in emergency funding. We heard what a difference it has already made.

The Problem Solvers Caucus will continue to lead in developing commonsense ways to ease this crisis, as there are no simple answers and much of the problem lies beyond our borders. But we must look at everything that is playing a role in the crisis and work together for solutions.

And we must support the CBP agents who are doing their best to improve the situation.

As many as 50 vehicles were involved, but early reports indicated only one serious injury resulted after chain-reaction crashes in heavy rain in North Carolina on Saturday night.

The crashes happened around 6 p.m. along the Interstate 40/85 exchange in Mebane, northwest of the Raleigh-Durham area, according to local media reports.

Traffic was backed up for miles in both directions as the State Highway Patrol and towing crews responded, Raleigh’s WRAL-TV reported.

In addition to the serious injury, for which no information was immediately available, several people were treated for minor injuries, the Highway Patrol told the News & Observer of Raleigh.

The cause of the crashes was still being investigated, but the highway patrol said the rain was likely a significant factor, according to reports.

Democratic 2020 presidential frontrunner Joe Biden praised Republicans as “decent people” at a Massachusetts fundraiser Saturday while touting his ability to work across the aisle, according to a report.

“There’s an awful lot of really good Republicans out there,” the former vice president told the audience, according to The Hill. “I get in trouble for saying that with Democrats, but the truth of the matter is, every time we ever got in trouble with our administration, remember who got sent up to Capitol Hill to fix it? Me. Because they know I respect the other team.”

He said congressional Republicans ran because they “care about things,” but are afraid to be at odds with President Trump.

“They’re intimidated right now,” he told the audience, The Hill reported.

Biden took heat last fall when The New York Times published a story that said he “stunned Democrats and elated Republicans” three weeks before the midterms by lauding Republican House candidate Fred Upton, R-Mich.

He has also frustrated Democrats in the past by praising former Vice President Dick Cheney and calling Vice President Mike Pence “a decent guy.”

While Biden — considered to be the most moderate of the top-ranked candidates — is largely running on his ability to work with Republicans, more liberal candidates like Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders and Kamala Harris are focused on promoting progressive plans like Medicare-for-All and the Green New Deal.

In a Twitter message Saturday, U.S. Rep. Dan Crenshaw declared Saturday’s protests in Portland, Ore., “a sad showing,” and said the city’s Antifa activists paled in comparison to the demonstrators fighting for democracy in Hong Kong.

“In Hong Kong,” the Republican congressman from Texas wrote, “antifascists wave American flags, demand freedom and actually fight fascists.

“In Portland,” he continued, “ ‘antifascists’ burn American flags, demand violence in the name of socialism.”

JOURNALIST ATTACKED BY ANTIFA: ‘CRIMINAL CARTEL’ WANTS VIOLENT REVOLUTION, SHOULD BE DESIGNATED AS TERROR ORGANIZATION

Crenshaw, 35, is in his first term in the U.S. House after being elected las November. The former U.S. Navy SEAL served in Afghanistan and is the recipient of two Bronze Stars for heroic service and a Purple Heart after being wounded in combat.

On Saturday, demonstrators from both left-wing and right-wing groups converged in Portland, Ore., the scene of numerous violent confrontations in the past.

As of Saturday evening, the city’s mayor was declaring the day’s events “largely peaceful,” with 13 arrests and a small number of minor injuries reported.

Members of the Proud Boys and other conservative groups have argued that Antifa protesters have instigated violence at their events, but have often escaped prosecution because many of their members keep their faces covered during attacks.

In July, the city’s police chief called for new laws against wearing masks during such protests.

“We cannot allow people to continue to use the guide of free speech to commit a crime,” Chief Danielle Outlaw said.

On Saturday, President Trump threatened to push for Antifa to be declared a terror organization.

As a member of the House Homeland Security Committee, Crenshaw frequently speaks out on matters of security and terrorism.

In July, Crenshaw accused Democratic U.S. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., of using the U.S.-Mexico border crisis as a stage for criticizing President Trump rather than for proposing solutions to the nation’s immigration problem.

“What they really want is more commissions … more investigations they can point to, to call the president evil,” Crenshaw said during an appearance on “Fox & Friends.” “That’s what they want.”

In June, Crenshaw went after Democratic U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters, accusing her of “literally repeating the lies of the Iranian regime” after she asserted that President Trump was trying to provoke a conflict with Iran.

“I told him there was nothing to be afraid of and that all he needed to do was relax,” Fonda said. “I said that I knew what it was like to be dead because when I was 10 years old, I’d accidentally shot myself in the stomach and my heart stopped beating three times while I was on the operating table because I’d lost so much blood.”

Fonda said John Lennon overhead him say “I know what it’s like to be dead.”

“He looked at me and said, ‘You’re making me feel like I’ve never been born. Who put all that sh– in your head?’” Fonda recalled, according to The Times.

Lennon later said that Fonda kept coming up to him and repeating the line.

“We didn’t want to hear about that!” he said. “We were on an acid trip and the sun was shining and the girls were dancing and the whole thing was beautiful and ‘60s, and this guy — who I really didn’t know; he hadn’t made ‘Easy Rider’ or anything — kept coming over, wearing shades, saying, ‘I know what it’s like to be dead,’ and we kept leaving him because he was so boring! And I used it for the song,” The Times reported.

Dick Cheney set to headline Trump 2020 fundraiser in Wyoming on Monday

When U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney appears Monday at a fundraiser for President Trump’s 2020 reelection campaign in her home state of Wyoming, she’ll be joined by someone else who knows his way around Washington.

Former Vice President Dick Cheney, the congresswoman’s father, is set to headline the luncheon event in Jackson, the Washington Post reported Saturday.

Also set to appear are presidential advisers Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, and White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney – although they are listed as “special guests” because of federal rules prohibiting administration officials from campaigning, the Post reported.

Former VP Cheney, 78, served under former President George W. Bush and was previously defense secretary under President George H.W. Bush after representing Wyoming in Congress. He also served as White House chief of staff under President Gerald Ford.

While Cheney has been a supporter of President Trump, he hasn’t shied away from speaking out when he disagrees with the commander-in-chief.

In March, at the American Enterprise Institute’s World Forum in Sea Isle, Ga., Cheney criticized Trump’s use of Twitter for making major policy announcements and also what he viewed as the president’s on-again, off-again support for NATO, Politico reported.

Cheney also questioned whether Trump valued the work of the U.S. intelligence community, according to the report.

His views reportedly were shared during a conversation with Vice President Mike Pence that was part of the forum attended by about 200 Republicans.

In May, many Democrats got upset when a 2015 video resurfaced, showing former Vice President Joe Biden saying he was fond of Cheney.

“First of all, I really like Dick Cheney, for real. I get on with him, I think he’s a decent man,” Biden, now the Democrats’ 2020 presidential frontrunner, said in the October 2015 video at an event honoring former Vice President Walter Mondale.

Other Republicans expected at Monday’s event in Wyoming include RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel, Co-Chairman Tommy Hicks Jr., National Finance Chairman Todd Ricketts and Trump 2020 campaign manager Brad Pascale, the Washington Examiner reported.
