Playboy reporter Brian Karem says he’ll sue over suspension of White House credentials

Playboy senior White House reporter and CNN political analyst Brian Karem said Friday he intends to sue the federal government over the temporary suspension of his White House hard pass credentials last month.

Karem’s credentials were taken away after an altercation with former White House aide Sebastian Gorka during a conservative social media summit in the Rose Garden of the White House on July 11.

Gorka and Karem got into a shouting match that was captured on video, after Karem described the summit participants as a “group of people that are eager for demonic possession.”

JUDGE ORDERS WHITE HOUSE TO RESTORE JIM ACOSTA’S PRESS PASS

After a bit of back and forth, Gorka shouted at Karem, “You’re a punk, you’re not a journalist, you’re a punk.” Karem then told Gorka to “get a job.”

At one point, Karem suggested they take their conversation “outside,” although they were already in the Rose Garden.

White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham in a letter said she based the suspension decision on Karem’s “insulting invited guests,” threatening a physical altercation and not leaving when asked by a White House staffer during the event.

A letter written by Karem’s legal team Friday said the suspension violates his First Amendment and due process rights and was “yet another example of this administration’s unconstitutional campaign to punish reporters and press coverage that President Trump doesn’t like.”

Last fall, the White House took away the credentials of CNN’s chief White House correspondent, Jim Acosta, after a contentious exchange with President Trump in which the White House claimed Acosta had placed his hands on a female intern while trying to hold on to his microphone.

CNN sued and nine days later a judge ordered his credentials restored.

Maine man pleads not guilty in 1993 rape, murder of Alaska woman; bail kept at $1M

A Maine man charged in a 26-year-old cold case rape and murder of a Native woman in Alaska pleaded not guilty in a Fairbanks courtroom Thursday.

But at a hearing Friday, a judge kept the bail for defendant Steven Downs at $1 million despite his defense attorney’s efforts to get it reduced.

“We’re not surprised by the outcome,” his attorney said, according to the Sun Journal. “We’re talking about a serious homicide here and the individual here has no current connections to the state of Alaska.”

COURT DOCUMENTS: DNA TRAIL LED TO ALASKA COLD CASE SUSPECT

Downs, 44, was arrested outside his home in February after new DNA evidence linked him to the 1993 killing of Sophie Sergie at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, which he attended from 1992 to 1996.

The DNA was linked through Downs’ aunt who had submitted a sample to a genealogy website.

Sergie was found sexually assaulted, stabbed and shot in the back of the head in a bathtub at the university dorm where Downs lived.

Her mother participated in the arraignment via phone through a Yupik language interpreter and asked if Downs was going to be “let out.”

“We fully expected there would be no change to the bail, but it was a good opportunity for us to advance some of our concerns about the evidence in this case,” his attorney said, the Sun Journal reported.

Sergie’s family attended the bail hearing and advocated for keeping it at $1 million.

“Real Time” host Bill Maher doubled down Friday on his desire for the U.S. economy to fall into recession in hopes of blocking a second term for President Trump — telling his panel of guests any hardship that results would be “very worth” it.

“I’ve been saying for about two years that I hope we have a recession and people get mad at me,” said Maher, a multimillionaire who would likely be well insulated from a financial downturn.

“I’m just saying we can survive a recession,” he continued. “We’ve had 47 of them. We’ve had one every time there’s a Republican president! They don’t last forever, You know what lasts forever? Wiping out species!”

MAHER SLAMS FAR-LEFT DEMS FOR BACKING ANTI-ISRAEL BDS MOVEMENT: A ‘BULLS— PURITY TEST’

The HBO star then pointed to a U.N. report warning how many species of plants and animals are at the risk of extinction and went on to blast the Trump administration for rolling back regulations from the Nixon-era Endangered Species Act “like any evil villain would do.”

“So yes, a recession would be very worth getting rid of Donald Trump and these kinds of policies,” Maher reiterated. “A recession would definitely knock him out of office.”

Earlier this month, Maher revived his argument in favor of a recession and last week found an ally in NBC News correspondent Richard Engel during a panel discussion.

“Short-term pain might be better than long-term destruction of the Constitution,” Engel argued.

“Right!” Maher replied. “Thank you very much.”

Rhode Island guard resigns after video shows truck driving into anti-ICE protesters

A Rhode Island correctional officer resigned Friday, one day after being placed on administrative leave following an incident in which a truck driver plowed the vehicle into a small crowd of anti-ICE protesters — reportedly injuring two of them.

It remained unclear whether Capt. Thomas Woodworth — who had worked at the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility in Central Falls, a government facility operated by a private contractor — was behind the wheel of the truck in the Wednesday incident. The operator holds contracts to detain illegal immigrants on behalf of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Providence Journal reported.

In a now-viral video posted on social media, a black pickup truck is seen advancing toward a group of protesters as they block the entranceway to the ICE facility. The truck stops briefly as protesters rise to their feet and move toward the vehicle, chanting “Shame!” and “The whole world is watching!”

HOMAN SHARES NEW VIDEO ON ICE FACILITY ATTACK: RESULT OF ‘HATEFUL RHETORIC’ FROM AOC’S ‘SQUAD,’ 2020 DEMS

The truck then suddenly moves forward while some protesters remain in its path. A female protester can be seen jumping on the back bed of the truck. A second video shows a group of detention officers approach the protesters after the confrontation with the truck driver. The officers reportedly told the crowd to back away before allegedly using pepper spray on them.

The Rhode Island State Police and facility officials are both investigating the incident, the Providence Journal reported.

The protest was organized by Never Again Action, a Jewish youth movement that compares current federal immigration policies, including immigrants being held at detention facilities, to the atrocities of the Holocaust. The group’s Twitter page has more than 53,000 followers.

The detention facility’s managers have not confirmed the identity of the driver, citing the ongoing investigation, the Journal reported.

Never Again Action, which claims Woodworth was the driver, issued a statement Friday after the officer’s resignation. In addition to the two injuries, the group also claims three people were treated for exposure to pepper spray, the Journal reported.

One of the protesters, Jerry Belair, 64, suffered a broken leg and internal bleeding and was being examined for a possible back injury, the organization told Boston’s WBZ-TV.

“We hope that will not be the end of an effort to hold him accountable for attempting to run over multiple Jewish youth and elders peacefully protesting,” Never Again Action’s statement said.

Never Again Action said about 300 protesters gathered at the detention center Wednesday, and about 30 of them were blocking the entrance when the truck first approached.

President Trump should not withdraw U.S. troops from Afghanistan, a member of the House Armed Services Committee who served in the country as a member of the U.S. Army said Friday.

“Half the world’s terrorist organizations still exist there and can attack the United States,” U.S. Rep. Michael Waltz, R-Fla., said Friday on “The Story with Martha MacCallum.” “And if you believe the Taliban’s promises, which I don’t, but if you believe them, how do they have the capability to keep a lid on these groups that the American Army has struggled with?”

On Friday, Trump met with his top security advisers about the way forward in Afghanistan — possibly moving toward a phased withdrawal, something critics warn could lead to the Taliban taking hold of the country once again.

Waltz, who served as a Green Beret, expressed his concern about neighboring Pakistan and urged Trump not to make the same mistakes that he claims President Obama did with Iraq.

“Right next door to Afghanistan is Pakistan with seven times the population and potential of loose nukes if Afghanistan devolves into chaos,” Waltz said. “Pakistan will go with it.”

“So I guess my message is, ‘Mr. President, do not be to Afghanistan — please — what President Obama was to Iraq.”

The first-term congressman from the Jacksonville area urged Trump to keep the conflict in Afghanstan to avoid losing more American lives.

“Let’s fight these wars in places like Kabul, [otherwise] it will follow us home,” he said. “I do not want to lose Americans fighting their way back in.”

Gaffe-prone Democratic 2020 frontrunner Joe Biden reportedly added another factual blunder to his list Friday.

During a campaign fundraiser in his home state of Delaware, the former vice president was referencing a speech he had made to a group of 275 people, in which he accused  President Trump of “fueling a literal carnage” in the country through his rhetoric.

But Biden mistakenly recalled the location of the speech as Burlington, Vt., instead of Burlington, Iowa, according to The Washington Examiner. Whether Biden had Democratic rival Bernie Sanders — a former mayor of Burlington, Vt. — on his mind was not immediately known.

GAFFE-PRONE BIDEN SHOULDN’T BE CLOISTERED, OBAMA AIDE SAYS: ‘HE EITHER CAN CUT IT OR HE CAN’T’

The mistake was the latest in a series of gaffes the 76-year-old Biden has made that have caused concern among some Democrats that’s he’s too old and prompted President Trump to say he isn’t “playing with a full deck.”

Last week in Iowa, Biden said “poor kids” are just as smart as “white kids,” and last weekend he mistakenly said he met with survivors of the February 2018 Parkland, Fla., school shooting while vice president — even though he had left office more than a year before the attack.

He has also confused former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher for Theresa May twice since May.

Biden’s press secretary told CNN the focus on Biden’s blunders is a “press narrative, not a voter narrative.”

The candidate himself, however, appears to take his verbal slip-ups in stride.

“I am a gaffe machine, but, my God, what a wonderful thing compared to a guy who can’t tell the truth,” according to The Washington Post.

Some Biden allies have suggested limiting his appearances due to the mistakes, the Examiner reported.

Maher slams far-left Dems for backing anti-Israel BDS movement: A ‘bulls— purity test’

“Real Time” host Bill Maher spent part of Friday’s show slamming the anti-Israel Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, calling it a “bulls— purity test.”

Maher kicked off the show’s panel segment by asking if it was “fair” to boycott, divest, and sanction Israel in wake of the clash between the Israeli government and pro-BDS U.S. Reps. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., and Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., over their planned visit to Israel.

But since Maher’s panelists all sidestepped the question, he decided he would “answer it myself.”

BILL MAHER ON BIDEN’S ‘SENIOR MOMENTS’: ‘GET USED TO IT’ IF HE BECOMES DEM NOMINEE

“It’s a bulls— purity test, BDS is a bulls— purity test by people who want to appear ‘woke’ but actually slept through history class,” Maher said, drawing loud cheers from the audience. “It’s predicated on this notion … I think it’s very shallow thinking that the Jews in Israel are mostly white and Palestinians are mostly brown, so they must be innocent and correct and the Jews must be wrong. As if the occupation came right out of the blue, that this ‘completely peaceful people’ found themselves occupied. Forget about the intifadas and the suicide bombings and the rockets and how many wars.”

The HBO star quoted BDS movement founder Omar Barghouti, who said, “No Palestinian — rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian — will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”

“So that’s where that comes from, this movement. Someone who doesn’t even want a Jewish state at all,” Maher told the panel. “Somehow this side never gets represented in the American media. It’s very odd.”

Maher then noted how Saudi Arabia doesn’t let Jews into the kingdom and listed statistics of several Middle Eastern countries where the Jewish population had plummeted in recent years.

“And Congresswoman Omar has said things like, ‘It’s all about the Benjamins,’ ‘Israel has hypnotized the world,’ ‘May Allah awaken the people and help them see the evil doings of Israel.’ She apologized for it, but it’s out there,” Maher said.

“I see why they don’t get a hero’s welcome,” he added.

Patriot Prayer leader Joey Gibson arrested on eve of Portland, Ore., protests

The leader of a conservative group was arrested Friday in Portland, Ore., one day before planned protests involving supporters of the far-left Antifa movement and supporters of several conservative groups.

Joey Gibson, leader of Portland-based Patriot Prayer, turned himself in to authorities in connection with an arrest warrant for rioting, stemming from a violent clash in the city on May 1, according to the Associated Press. He was later released after posting bail, with further legal action pending.

In a video posted on Facebook, Gibson accused police of targeting conservative groups for arrests but not members of Antifa, even though masked Antifa supporters have been seen on videos engaging in violence during past protests.

Gibson asserted that authorities were trying to intimidate conservatives who planned to protest Saturday.

“They want you to not show up in Portland, they want to put fear in your hearts,” Gibson said.

GABRIEL NADALES: ANTIFA VIOLENCE FEARED IN PORTLAND SATURDAY — GROUP MUST BE CONDEMNED AND EXPOSED

Gibson, 35, was not connected to the events planned for Saturday but had organized Portland rallies that turned violent in 2017 and 2018, the report said.

Separately, a conservative group called the Oath Keepers has decided it will not participate Saturday, saying it did not believe organizers had done enough to discourage white supremacists from showing up.

Portland authorities have been taking steps intended to minimize the chances that Saturday’s demonstrations repeat the violence of past events. Personnel from more than two-dozen law enforcement agencies – representing local, state and federal government – are involved in trying to maintain order during the demonstrations, the AP reported.

“I’m confident that from a law enforcement perspective, we’re going to have all the tools and the resources and personnel we need,” Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler said Friday on Fox News’ “Outnumbered Overtime.”

The mayor, a Democrat, has drawn criticism over the city’s handling of past protests.

In June, conservative writer Andy Ngo was hospitalized after being attacked by Antifa supporters at a Portland demonstration.

On Friday, Ngo told “Fox & Friends” that he feared Saturday’s event “has the potential to be a powder keg.”

Precautions being taken in Portland for Saturday include plans by many downtown businesses to close for the day, as well as the planned closure of the Hawthorne Bridge, which connects eastern Portland to the downtown area, across the Willamette River, OregonLive reported.

Some jail staffers not cooperating with DOJ investigation into Epstein suicide, source says

Westlake Legal Group AP19223094561165 Some jail staffers not cooperating with DOJ investigation into Epstein suicide, source says Vandana Rambaran fox-news/us fox-news/person/jeffrey-epstein fox news fnc/us fnc f2b08c35-d0cc-55fa-a240-4cd3d6a4cec5 Bill Mears article

Personnel at the New York City prison where accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein committed suicide last week have not been initially cooperative with investigators from the Department of Justice, a federal source told Fox News Friday.

Attorney General William Barr sent two senior DOJ officials to personally visit the Metropolitan Correctional Center and speak with staff from the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) in order to gather information on Epstein’s death after Barr said officials uncovered “serious irregularities” at the jail, a senior DOJ official told Fox News. The officials have been on site since Thursday and the FBI and the Justice Department’s inspector general are investigating conditions at the MCC.

NEW YORK MEDICAL EXAMINER: JEFFREY EPSTEIN’S DEATH WAS A SUICIDE BY HANGING

BOP officials from various regional offices have also been sent to the Manhattan facility to lend their expertise and insight. In addition, a separate BOP “After Action Team” went to MCC earlier this week in an effort to examine what happened the night Epstein died. The use of the “After Action Team” is part of BOP protocol whenever a “significant event takes place at a prison.

Epstein was found dead in his cell on Aug. 10. Earlier Friday, New York City’s medical examiner officially ruled the 66-year-old’s death a suicide by hanging.

Fox News has also learned that 20 of 21 prison staff posts were filled between the hours of 4 p.m. and 12 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 9, the day before Epstein was found. Of those prison workers, six of them were working voluntary overtime. Between 12 a.m. and 8 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10, 18 of 19 staff posts were filled. Of those 18 staffers, 10 were working overtime and all but one of those were doing so voluntarily.

Conspiracy theories swirled following Epstein’s death, as many wondered how the wealthy financier could have been able to kill himself in a high-security facility just over two weeks after being placed on suicide watch, though officials later confirmed Epstein had been taken off suicide watch shortly before his death.

Correctional officers did not check in with Epstein for “several hours” before his death, despite being required to visit him every 30 minutes, a person familiar with the situation told Fox News earlier this week.

Jail guards on duty the night of Epstein’s death are also suspected of falsifying log entries to show they were checking on inmates every half-hour as required, The Associated Press reported, citing several people familiar with the matter.

Two staffers have been placed on administrative leave and the MCC’s warden has been reassigned pending an investigation.

Late Friday, Epstein’s attorneys issued a statement decrying what they described as “the harsh, even medieval conditions at the MCC.”

“It is indisputable that the authorities violated their own protocols,”  Martin Weinberg, Reid Weingarten and Michael Miller said. “The defense team fully intends to conduct its own independent and complete investigation into the circumstances and cause of Mr. Epstein’s death including if necessary legal action to view the pivotal videos – if they exist as they should – of the area proximate to Mr. Epstein’s cell during the time period leading to his death.

“We are not satisfied with the conclusions of the medical examiner,” the statement concluded. ” We will have a more complete response in the coming days

The Secret Service arrested a man who was wearing a bulletproof vest and carrying a knife outside the Israeli embassy in Washington, D.C., on Friday.

Officers responded to a reported of a suspicious person and vehicle in the area of the embassy at approximately 7:45 a.m. and saw the suspect was wearing a ballistic vest and had a folding knife in his pocket, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

A police report said the man was “making nonsensical statements” while speaking to officers.

ISRAEL BLOCKS OMAR, TLAIB FROM ENTERING COUNTRY AMID PRESSURE FROM TRUMP

When officers located and searched the suspect’s vehicle, they discovered ammunition. They seized a folding knife and two .223 Remington cartridges. The suspect was arrested for carrying a dangerous weapon and possession of unregistered ammunition.

Security at the Israeli Embassy had spotted the man Friday morning and noticed he was wearing what appeared to be a bulletproof vest and acting abnormally, although he did not act aggressively, they said. Embassy security then notified the Secret Service.

RASHIDA TLAIB SIGNALS SHE WON’T GO TO WEST BANK, DESPITE GETTING ISRAELI MINISTER’S PERMISSION

Streets around the embassy were blocked off for several hours.

The incident comes the same day that Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., said she will not travel to the West Bank to visit her family there, despite getting permission from Israel’s interior minister.

Earlier this year, Israel said Tlaib and Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., could enter the country for an upcoming trip, which had been scheduled for this weekend. But Israel said Thursday the two women would not be allowed to enter due to their support of an anti-Israel boycott movement.

Israel later said Tlaib could enter the country to visit her grandmother, who is in her 90s.

President Trump had said it would show “great weakness” if Israel allowed Tlaib and Omar into the country.
