Canadian service dogs attend ‘Billy Elliot’ production, photo goes viral

An adorable photo of a group of service dogs sitting in a Canadian theater last week catching a production of “Billy Elliot” has gone viral.

The photo shows the crowd of mainly poodles and golden retrievers taking up at least four rows and attentively watching the stage during the Stratford Festival in Ontario. The objective was to prevent fur from flying during live theater so the pups can help their handlers navigate a theater atmosphere.

“It’s important to prepare the dogs for any activity the handler may like to attend,” said Laura Mackenzie, owner of K-9 Country Inn Working Service Dogs and who spearheaded the outing, told CBC radio.

“The theater gives us the opportunity to expose the dogs to different stimuli such as lights, loud noises and movement of varying degrees. The dogs must remain relaxed in tight quarters for an extended period of time.”

The canines took part in the theater’s “relaxed performance,” made for attendees with autism or for those who need a calmer experience. The venue also has shows made for those with hearing or visual impairments.

“They were all extremely well-behaved,” Stratford Festival spokesperson Ann Swerdfager told the radio station. “I was in the lobby when they came in, then they took their seats, then got out of their seats at intermission and went back. All of the things we learn as humans when we start going to the theater.”

Swerdfager said both cast and audience members were thrilled to see the four-legged attendees and that service dogs are accepted there several times per week. It’s a unique training method that gives service handlers a leg up on attending outings, like a play.

“Everybody was so thrilled to see all these dogs at one time in the audience. It’s really exciting. And it’s thrilling to be part of something that is going to serve theatergoers of the future,” Swerdfager told the outlet.

“It’s wonderful that going to the theater is considered one of the things that you want to train a service dog for, rather than thinking that theatre is out of reach for people who require a service animal because it isn’t,” she added.

All of the doggies were reportedly all very good boys during the show, and Mackenzie said she plans to return with more pups in the future.

“All of the dogs were fantastic and remained relaxed throughout the performance. Some even watched through the cracks of the seats,” said Mackenzie. “The dogs loved the show almost as much as their handlers.”

“She arrived in a white 2010 Cadillac belonging to someone else. After she refused to answer a question, the defendant used a front-end loader and dumped a bucket full of dirt on the roof of the driver side half of the car,” the sheriff’s office said.

The girlfriend was not injured but the driver’s side window was open. This caused dirt to fill up the air vents, center console, and power windows, the office said.

House Dems could retaliate against US and Israel ambassadors after banned visit: report

Westlake Legal Group 4801f660-israel-congress-thumb-1 House Dems could retaliate against US and Israel ambassadors after banned visit: report fox-news/world/world-regions/middle-east fox-news/world/world-regions/israel fox-news/world fox-news/politics/house-of-representatives/democrats fox-news/person/rashida-tlaib fox-news/person/ilhan-omar fox news fnc/politics fnc article Alex Pappas 57e0d2eb-f046-56d7-bf02-b84d54336080

House Democrats are reportedly considering retaliatory moves against two top American and Israeli diplomats in response to Israel’s decision to block Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar and Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib from entering the country.

Senior Democratic members of Congress are considering legislative action against Ron Dermer, Israel’s ambassador to Washington, and David Friedman, the U.S. ambassador to Israel, according to McClatchy.

ISRAELI MINISTER RIPS TLAIB FOR NIXING TRIP, SAYS ‘HER HATE FOR ISRAEL’ OVERCOMES ‘LOVE FOR HER GRANDMOTHER’

According to the report, the Democrats are discussing a possible vote on a statement of no confidence in Dermer, as well as the opening up of an inspector general investigation into Friedman.

Meanwhile, Tlaib’s 90-year-old grandmother, Muftia Tlaib, who lives in the West Bank, used fiery language as she ripped President Trump for his comments about the banned trip: “Trump tells me I should be happy Rashida is not coming,” she said, according to Reuters. “May God ruin him.”

Earlier in the week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cited Omar and Tlaib’s anti-Israel statements in saying it would block her and another Democratic congresswoman from entering Israel as part of a planned trip.

The move – announced shortly after Trump tweeted that it would “show great weakness” to allow them in – has ignited a massive outcry from Washington Democrats, as Netanyahu’s government stands by the decision arguing the U.S. lawmakers have an ulterior, anti-Israel agenda.

ILHAN OMAR ACCUSES NETANYAHU OF IMPOSING ‘MUSLIM BAN’ AS DEMS DECRY DECISION TO BLOCK ISRAEL VISIT

Both Omar and Tlaib are Muslim. They are also outspoken critics of Israel and have expressed support for boycotts of the country.

Still, while blocking the planned trip, the Israeli government said it would accept a humanitarian request from Tlaib to visit her Palestinian grandmother. But on Friday, Tlaib said she would not travel to the West Bank to visit family, despite getting permission hours before from Israel’s interior minister.

Trump blasted Tlaib’s decision not to visit on humanitarian grounds.

“Rep. Tlaib wrote a letter to Israeli officials desperately wanting to visit her grandmother,” Trump tweeted Friday. “Permission was quickly granted, whereupon Tlaib obnoxiously turned the approval down, a complete setup. The only real winner here is Tlaib’s grandmother. She doesn’t have to see her now!”

Netanyahu has said that Tlaib and Omar’s itinerary “revealed that they planned a visit whose sole objective is to strengthen the boycott against us and deny Israel’s legitimacy.” He said Israel welcomes critics with the exception of those who support boycotts of the Jewish State.

Omar and Tlaib had planned to visit Jerusalem and the West Bank on a tour organized by a Palestinian organization aimed at highlighting the plight of the Palestinians.

ICE arrests illegal immigrant accused of rape 2 months after he was released on bond

A North Carolina sheriff has been accused by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials of ignoring an ICE detainer in the case of an illegal immigrant who was captured this month — two months after he was released on bond in a rape case.

“By releasing a previously deported alien facing serious criminal charges, Mecklenburg County chose to release a serious public safety threat onto the streets of Charlotte where he was free to potentially harm others for nearly two months until his capture by ICE,” the agency officials said Friday.

Charlotte police arrested Oscar Pacheco-Leonardo June 14 on rape and indecent liberties with a minor charges. Online records show Pacheco-Leonardo was accused of having sex with a child under the age of 13. He was due back in court in October.

‘CLERICAL ERROR’ BLAMED FOR NC JAIL’S RELEASE OF ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT DETAINED ON MURDER CHARGE

ICE said it issued a detainer the next day but it wasn’t honored and the 33-year-old Honduran national was released June 16 by the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office. The immigration enforcement agency said Pacheco-Leonardo reentered the U.S. illegally after being deported in 2006.

“This arrest is simply the latest in a continuing list of unlawfully present foreign nationals released from Mecklenburg County custody over the past nine months despite serious criminal charges that pose a clear threat to public safety,” ICE said.

ICE said the 48-hour detainer could have given the agency time to take custody of Pacheco-Leonardo to deport him.

Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden defended himself Friday at a news conference in which he took no questions, Fox 46 Charlotte reported.

ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS ARRESTED IN MICHIGAN INCLUDE THRICE-DEPORTED DRUG DEALER

McFadden said Pacheco-Leonardo was released after he put up $100,000 in bond set by a Mecklenburg judge in the rape case.

The sheriff said ICE could have sought a criminal arrest warrant for Pacheco-Leonardo for illegal re-entry but did not.

“The reasons for that decision have yet to be satisfactorily explained to me or to the public,” he said.

Iranian tanker set to leave Gibraltar despite US warrant to seize vessel

Westlake Legal Group AP19227361143228 Iranian tanker set to leave Gibraltar despite US warrant to seize vessel fox-news/world/world-regions/middle-east fox-news/world/conflicts/iran fox-news/politics/foreign-policy fnc/world fnc Associated Press article a85d2785-8405-5c9e-a7da-1a19bbe588cf

The United States faced an against-the-clock legal battle to re-seize an Iranian supertanker caught in a diplomatic standoff before the vessel’s shipping agent said Saturday he would go ahead with the ship’s planned departure from Gibraltar on Sunday or Monday.

The head of the company sorting paperwork and procuring for the Grace 1 oil tanker in the British overseas territory said the vessel could be sailing away in the next “24 to 48 hours,” once new crews dispatched to the territory take over command of the ship.

“The vessel is ongoing some logistical changes and requirements that have delayed the departure,” Astralship managing director Richard De la Rosa told The Associated Press.

He said the new crews were Indian and Ukrainian nationals hired by the Indian managers of the ship and that his company had not been informed about the supertanker’s next destination.

CAPTAIN OF IRANIAN SUPERTANKER THAT’S TRYING TO LEAVE GIBRALTAR ‘DOESN’T WANT TO STAY IN COMMAND,’ LAWYER SAYS

The tanker, which carries 2.1 million tons of Iranian light crude oil, had been detained for over a month in Gibraltar for allegedly attempting to breach European Union sanctions on Syria. The arrest fueled tension between London and Tehran, which seized a British-flagged tanker in the Strait of Hormuz in apparent retaliation.

Analysts had said the release of the Grace 1 by Gibraltar could see Britain’s Stena Impero go free.

But late on Friday, a day after the tanker was released from detention, the U.S. obtained a warrant to seize the vessel over violations of U.S. sanctions, money laundering and terrorism statutes. Washington is seeking to take control of the oil tanker, all of the petroleum aboard and $995,000, unsealed court documents showed.

The latest turn of events come as tensions continue to rise in the Persian Gulf since President Donald Trump last year unilaterally pulled the U.S. out of the 2015 nuclear deal signed by Iran and other world powers. In recent weeks, oil tankers in the region have been the subject of attacks and seizures, dragging among others London and Tehran into a bitter diplomatic row.

The Gibraltar Supreme Court didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment on whether the U.S. request had been filed there. Britain’s Foreign Office deferred questions to the government of Gibraltar, but calls and emails to its offices on how authorities planned to respond to Washington’s move went unanswered.

Messages left with the U.S. Embassy in London were not immediately returned.

IRAN USING GPS JAMMERS, PRETEND TO BE AMERICAN WARSHIPS TO TRICK VESSELS, US SAYS

The chief minister of Gibraltar, Fabian Picardo, had warned the U.S. that a new legal case would need to be examined by the territory’s courts following the end of the tanker’s detention this week. Picardo said he had been assured in writing by the Iranian government that the tanker wouldn’t unload its cargo in Syria.

Richard Wilkinson, a lawyer representing three crew members of the Grace 1 oil tanker, including its Indian captain, said he was “not aware of any reason why the ship won’t sail on Sunday, as it is to be planned.”

“As far as Europe is concerned, and it’s common ground, there’s been no criticism or complaints that this vessel is carrying oil from Iran, the only problem from the European point of view was the destination of the vessel and that has been sorted,” Wilkinson said.

He also said that he doubted that the U.S. had any jurisdiction to enforce its own sanctions in Gibraltar, where he saw “little political will” to re-seize the tanker.

The time window for a new seizure was also rapidly closing, as workers were seen by an AP crew hanging on a ladder to repaint the vessel’s bow with the name “Adrian Darya 1” over the place where “Grace 1” had already been blackened out.

The ship was reportedly no longer sailing under a Panamanian flag, but no signs of a new one could be seen on Saturday.

The shipping agent, De la Rosa, said that “if the Americans came forth with some kind of request or specific order, it would have to be looked into by the judges, but I don’t think that’s materialized.”

New York City police apprehend man wanted in subway pressure cooker scare

Police in New York City have apprehended the man they say caused a mass evacuation during Friday morning’s commute after he allegedly left several pressure cookers throughout a busy Manhattan subway.

NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermot F. Shea shared a tweet Saturday morning of a man caught on surveillance the previous day removing two rice cookers from a shopping cart and placing them inside the Fulton Street subway station in lower Manhattan.

LAS VEGAS SECURITY GUARD ARRESTED FOR PLOT TO BOMB SYNAGOGUE OR LGBTQ BAR

Officials did not identify the individual but confirmed that he had been “located” and that the investigation was on going.

Police swarmed the area at around 7 a.m. Friday after one pressure cooker was located on the mezzanine and another on the platform of a subway station just a few blocks away from the World Trade Center.

Multiple subway lines were partially suspended during the investigation at Fulton Street, and delays continued throughout the morning before police eventually determined that the objects were not explosives.

Authorities did not say what the nature of the man’s intentions were, with one official stopping just short of calling him a “suspect.”

“It is possible that somebody put out a bunch of items in the trash today and this guy picked them up and then discarded them, or it’s possible that this was an intentional act,” the NYPD’s top counterterror official John Miller said.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said earlier, however, that the items were placed in the subway “to suggest that they were electronic devices and possible bombs.”

Pressure cookers have recently become the device of choice for several domestic terror plots over the last several years.

Pressure cookers packed with explosives killed three people and injured hundreds when a pair of Islamic extremists detonated them during the Boston Marathon in 2013.

In September 2016, a pressure-cooker bomb went off in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood, injuring 30 people.

In 2017, a would-be suicide attacker set off a homemade pipe bomb in an underground passageway at the Times Square subway station during rush hour, seriously injuring himself.

Although the name of the man in question has not been confirmed by police, he was identified as 26-year-old Larry Kenton Griffin of West Virginia by his brother in an interview with the Daily Mail. Griffin’s brother claimed he is “bipolar” and that the incident Friday was a “cry for help.”

Joe Kennedy III mulling Dem primary challenge for Massachusetts Senate seat

Another member of the Kennedy political dynasty reportedly has their eyes on a Senate seat.

The 38-year-old Massachusetts Democratic Rep. Joe Kennedy III — the grandson of Robert F. Kennedy – is considering a primary challenge in 2020 against the 73-year-old incumbent Democratic Senator Ed Markey, the New York Times reported Saturday.

The paper cited a Democratic official who said Kennedy would decide on a campaign in the coming weeks. A Kennedy primary challenge would undoubtedly draw national attention to the primary.

He would be the fourth Kennedy to serve in the Senate. In addition to his grandfather, his great-uncles John F. Kennedy, the former president, and Ted Kennedy also were elected to the Senate.

Markey’s campaign told the New York Times that the incumbent still plans to run for re-election, regardless of what Kennedy decides. “Ed is not going anywhere,” Markey adviser Paul Tencher said. “He’s going to run, and he’s going to run no matter who is in this race.”

In recent days, there have been signs that Kennedy, who delivered the Democratic rebuttal to President Trump’s State of the Union last year, is interested in the seat.

Politico reported the existence of a July telephone poll in Massachusetts of a hypothetical Markey-Kennedy race. Then, a “Jump in, Joe!” group of Kennedy supporters launched a website and a Facebook group earlier this week.

“He has energy, courage, integrity, and progressive ideas,” the website for the group says. “The United States Senate needs a bench of proactive, progressive leaders to counter the divisive tactics of Senator Mitch McConnell and his Republican Party. We believe the United States Senate needs Joe Kennedy III.”

In a statement to Politico, Kennedy’s spokesman would only say Kennedy is running for re-election to the House – without directly commenting on the Senate seat.

“Congressman Kennedy is humbled by the support of so many folks in Massachusetts. As he has said, he is running for reelection in the 4th District,” Kennedy spokesperson Emily Kaufman told the outlet.

North Korea’s Kim Jong Un expresses ‘great satisfaction’ over latest weapons tests

North Korea said Saturday that leader Kim Jong Un supervised another test-firing of an unspecified new weapon, seen as an attempt to pressure Washington and Seoul over slow nuclear negotiations and their joint military exercises.

Pyongyang’s Korean Central News Agency, or KCNA, said that following Friday’s launches, Kim expressed “great satisfaction” over his military’s “mysterious and amazing success rates” in recent testing activity and vowed to build up “invincible military capabilities no one dare provoke.” The report did not mention any specific comment about the United States or South Korea.

The launches were North Korea’s sixth round of tests since late July that revealed developments of a new rocket artillery system and two separate short-range mobile ballistic missile systems that experts say would expand its ability to strike targets throughout South Korea, including U.S. bases there.

KCNA did not describe what Friday’s weapons were or how they performed, but said that the tests were successful and strengthened the military’s confidence in the reliability of the system.

North Korea’s official Rodong Sinmun newspaper published photos that showed what appeared to be a missile soaring from a launcher installed on a vehicle and striking what appeared to be a coastal target. Kim is seen jubilantly raising his fist while celebrating with military officials.

“(Kim) said everyone should remember that it is the (ruling) party’s core plan and unwavering determination to build a powerful force strong enough to discourage any forces from daring to provoke us and to leave any opponent defenseless against our Juche weapons of absolute power even in situations of physical clashes,” KCNA said, referring to the North’s national ideology of self-reliance.

In a separate statement on Saturday, KCNA berated the ongoing U.S.-South Korea military drills as an invasion rehearsal that compels North Korea to constantly develop “powerful physical means and their deployment for an actual war.”

NORTH KOREA MOCKS SOUTH’S PRESIDENT AFTER LATEST MISSILE TEST, REJECTS PEACE TALKS

The United States has downsized its major military exercises with South Korea and halted dispatches of strategic assets such as long-range bombers and aircraft carriers to the region since the first summit between Kim and President Donald Trump last year. But North Korea says even the smaller drills violate agreements between the leaders.

South Korea’s military said earlier that two projectiles launched from the North’s eastern coast flew about 230 kilometers (143 miles) before landing in waters between the Korean Peninsula and Japan. The U.S. and South Korean militaries were analyzing the launches but didn’t immediately say whether the weapons were ballistic missiles or rocket artillery.

Experts say Trump’s repeated downplaying of the North’s recent launches allow the country more room to intensify its testing activity and advance its short-range weaponry while it seeks to build leverage ahead of nuclear negotiations with Washington, which could resume after the end of the military drills later this month.

The U.S. envoy for North Korea, Stephen Biegun, will visit Japan and South Korea early next week for talks on how to “further strengthen coordination on the final, fully verified denuclearization” of North Korea, the U.S. State Department said.

North Korea has ignored South Korean calls for dialogue recently and is seen as trying to force Seoul to make stronger efforts to coax major concessions from Washington on its behalf.

NORTH KOREA SLAMS SEOUL OVER MILITARY DRILLS WITH US, SAYS KIM OVERSAW LATEST WEAPONS TESTS

Hours before the latest launches, an unidentified North Korean government spokesperson used unusually blunt language to criticize South Korean President Moon Jae-in for continuing to hold military exercises with the U.S. and over his rosy comments on inter-Korean diplomacy, and said Pyongyang has no current plans to talk with Seoul.

Moon said in a televised speech on Thursday that momentum for dialogue remains alive despite the series of “worrying actions taken by North Korea recently” and called for Pyongyang to choose “economic prosperity over its nuclear program.”

The spokesperson also criticized South Korea’s recent acquisition of advanced U.S.-made fighter jets and said it would be “senseless” for Moon to believe that inter-Korean dialogue will automatically begin after the end of the U.S.-South Korean drills.

The North had recently said it would talk only with Washington and not Seoul, and that inter-Korean dialogue won’t resume unless the South offers a “plausible excuse” on why it keeps hosting military drills with the United States. Seoul’s Unification Ministry, which deals with inter-Korean affairs, criticized the North Korean statement, saying it wouldn’t help efforts to improve relations.
