Teen’s abdominal mass was malformed twin in extremely rare occurrence, case report says

A 17-year-old with a history of abdominal pain and a growing lump landed in a medical journal after doctors discovered that the mass was actually her malformed twin, marking what they believe is the first case of its kind to occur in a female her age.

In a published BMJ Case Reports, the unidentified woman, who was treated by doctors in India, presented with a firm, irregularly shaped lump that took up her entire abdomen. A scan revealed the mass had fat density areas, soft tissue, and “multiple calcified density components of various sizes and shapes resembling the shape of vertebrae, ribs and long bones.”

Surgeons removed the mass, which they found had hair, bones and other body parts, and determined it to be a case of fetus in fetu (FIF), which occurs in only about 1 in 500,000 live births, and has been reported less than 200 times. The condition is diagnosed when a malformed fetus is found in the body of a living twin. The report’s authors noted that the condition more typically is found in younger males, making her case exceedingly unusual.

Greenland says it’s ‘open for business, not for sale’ after Trump purchase report

Greenland dismissed reports that U.S. President Donald Trump has thought about purchasing the world’s biggest island, saying it was “open for business, not for sale.”

A report in the Wall Street Journal claimed that Trump has reportedly expressed interest in acquiring Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory, for the U.S.

White House sources told the Journal that Trump asked his advisers about acquiring the island during “meetings, dinners, and passing conversations” because of Greenland’s “abundant resources and geopolitical importance.”

A Trump ally told the Associated Press on Thursday that Trump had discussed the purchase but was not serious about it.

Greenland, however, said it’s not on the market.

“We have a good cooperation with USA, and we see it as an expression of greater interest in investing in our country and the possibilities we offer,” the island’s government said on its website. “Of course, Greenland is not for sale.”

The country’s foreign ministry insisted that it was “open for business, but not for sale.”

“Greenland is rich in valuable resources such as minerals, the purest water and ice, fish stocks, seafood, renewable energy and is a new frontier for adventure tourism,” the ministry said in a tweet Friday. “We’re open for business, not for sale.”

Danish politicians on Friday poured scorn on the idea.

“It has to be an April Fool’s joke. Totally out of season,” former prime minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen tweeted.

Meanwhile, Soren Espersen, the foreign affairs spokesman for the Danish People’s Party, told broadcaster DR: “If he is truly contemplating this, then this is final proof, that he has gone mad. The thought of Denmark selling 50,000 citizens to the United States is completely ridiculous.”

Former U.S. ambassador to Denmark, Rufus Gifford, commented on Twitter, saying: “Oh dear lord. As someone who loves Greenland, has been there nine times to every corner and loves the people, this is a complete and total catastrophe.”

PHOTOS FROM GREENLAND REVEAL WORRYING COST OF EUROPEAN HEAT WAVE

Still, it wouldn’t be the first time an American leader tried to buy the world’s largest island.

In 1946, the U.S. proposed to pay Denmark $100 million to buy Greenland after flirting with the idea of swapping land in Alaska for strategic parts of the Arctic island.

Coincidentally, the Journal’s report comes as Trump will make his first visit to Denmark next month. However, the sources said the scheduled trip is completely unrelated.

Greenland, which has a population of roughly 56,000 concentrated along the coastline, has welcomed U.S. military personnel to its Thule Air Base as part of a treaty between the U.S. and Denmark. More than 80 percent of the island is covered by an ice cap.

The Journal reported that advisers have said Trump sees purchasing Greenland as equivalent to the 1867 acquisition of Alaska.

The White House has not commented on the reports.

Council on Foreign Relations member says Tlaib’s approval to visit on humanitarian grounds was likely

Westlake Legal Group Screen-Shot-2019-08-16-at-9.09.10-AM Council on Foreign Relations member says Tlaib's approval to visit on humanitarian grounds was likely Joshua Nelson fox-news/shows/fox-friends fox-news/media/fox-news-flash fox news fnc/media fnc article 62a2a3a3-eb66-558e-a3c7-d7c25ee97ad7

A member of the Council on Foreign Relations said Friday that even though Rep. Rashida Tlaib’s, D-Mich., visit on humanitarian grounds was likely to get approved, she is certain Tlaib and fellow House Democrat Ilhan Omar were planning to use the trip to promote an anti-Israel boycott movement.

“This was not unexpected,” Dr. Qanta Ahmed told Steve Doocey on “Fox & Friends.”  “Israel is a legitimate democracy and democracies grapple with difficult decisions all the time. It was very likely that Israel was going to accept her visit into the West Bank on a personal visit on humanitarian grounds and that’s exactly what’s happening.”

Israel’s interior minister approved a humanitarian request from Tlaib to visit the West Bank just hours after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced, amid pressure from President Trump, that Tlaib and Omar were banned from coming to Israel for their support of an anti-Israel boycott movement.

REP. RASHIDA TLAIB GETS ISRAELI MINISTER’S OK TO ENTER WEST BANK TO VISIT GRANDMOTHER

The Jerusalem Post reported that Tlaib wrote a letter to Interior Minister Aryeh Deri to request permission to visit her Palestinian grandmother, who lives in the West Bank.

Ahmed said Omar and Tlaib’s initial agenda was to promote “boycott divestment sanctions ideology.”

Ahmed explained that “boycott divestment sanctions masquerades as a boycott for the humanitarian rights or the elevations rights of Palestinian people. But it is actually the delegitimization of the existence of Israel. It is looking for denormalization of international relations with Israel and it is leading to and advocating for the demographic eradication of Israel.”

“This is a global movement, 10 to 15 years in duration that seeks to end Israel as we know it,” she added.

While Tlaib’s request was approved following the initial rejection, Omar was barred from entering the country.

As to whether Omar should be allowed in the country, Ahmed responded, “I would be in favor of banning her permanently, even though I recognize the political cost for Israel for doing that. Ilhan Omar not only tweets anti-Semitic material, not only is against anti-BDS legislation, she has fraternized and fundraised and [been] keynote [speaker] for Islamic Relief USA, which is sanctioned by the UAE, by Egypt, by Chunazea, by Sweden for its links to Jihadist terrorism.”

“Do we want an elected American official going in any kind of official capacity with those associations?” she said. “We wouldn’t permit that here, free speech aside.”

North Korea mocks South’s president after latest missile test, rejects peace talks

Westlake Legal Group AP19228018197415 North Korea mocks South's president after latest missile test, rejects peace talks Lucia Suarez Sang fox-news/world/world-regions/south-korea fox-news/world/conflicts/north-korea fox-news/politics/foreign-policy/state-department fox news fnc/world fnc article 2a34bf1f-45e8-5343-9386-75dc377733ac

North Korea took aim at South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Friday for his rosy comments about the supposed peace dialogue between the two nations, saying that his remarks would make a “boiled head of a cow (fall into) a side-splitting laughter.”

Moon held a televised speech Thursday in which he said that momentum for dialogue remains alive despite the series of “worrying actions taken by North Korea recently.” He also called for Pyongyang to choose “economic prosperity over its nuclear program.”

NORTH KOREA LAUNCHES 2 MORE SHORT-RANGE MISSILES, US OFFICIAL SAYS

On Friday, the spokesman for the North’s Committee for Peaceful Reunification of the Country rejected – again – the South’s calls for dialogue, saying that Pyongyang has no current plans to talk with Seoul.

“A sure thing is that the (South) Korean chief executive is (such a) funny man as he just reads what was written by his juniors,” the statement said, while avoiding calling Moon by his name.

The statement also criticized South Korea’s recent acquisition of advanced U.S.-made fighter jets and said it would be “senseless” for Moon to believe that inter-Korean dialogue will automatically begin after the end of the ongoing U.S.-South Korean military drills.

“We have nothing to (talk about) anymore with (South) Korean authorities nor have any (plans) to sit with them again,” the statement said.

NORTH KOREAN SLAMS SEOUL OVER MILITARY DRILLS WITH US, SAYS KIM OVERSAW LATEST WEAPONS TESTS

The North had recently said it would talk only with Washington and not Seoul, and that inter-Korean dialogue won’t resume unless the South offers a “plausible excuse” on why it keeps hosting military drills with the United States. Seoul’s Unification Ministry, which deals with inter-Korean affairs, criticized the North Korean statement, saying it wouldn’t help efforts to improve relations.

The North’s statement came hours before South Korea’s military detected two projectiles North Korea fired into the sea to expand a torrid streak of weapons display that’s apparently aimed at pressuring Washington and Seoul over their joint drills and slow nuclear negotiations.

South Korea’s Joint Chief of Staff said the projectiles launched from the North’s eastern coast flew about 143 miles on an apogee of 18 miles before landing in waters between the Korean Peninsula and Japan.

A U.S. official confirmed to Fox News that the North had fired two short-range ballistic missiles – for the sixth time in three weeks.

South Korea’s presidential office said national security adviser Chung Eui-yong presided over an emergency National Security Council meeting and Moon was briefed on the launches. The Blue House called for the North to stop launches that risk raising military tensions on the peninsula.

The weapons the North tested in recent weeks included a new rocket artillery system and what security analysts say are two new short-range mobile ballistic missile systems that would potentially expand its ability to strike targets throughout South Korea, including U.S. bases there.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Tom Brady reminds rookie to ‘study your playbook’ in Instagram comment

Tom Brady clearly wants his teammates focused on winning another Super Bowl this season.

So when rookie edge rusher Chase Winovich posted an Instagram photo Wednesday and captioned it with a helping of poetic verses from William Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar,” Brady had to make sure his New England Patriots teammate got his head back in the game.

R. Kelly fails to appear for Chicago court date, prosecutors allege he ‘refused transport’

R&B singer R. Kelly missed a status hearing in court Thursday after prosecutors allege he “refused transport” from his Chicago jail cell.

Kelly, 52, was arrested in llinois last month on several charges including child pornography, coercion or enticement and transporting for prositution after prosecuters in several states accused him of using his fame to recruit young women and girls into illegal sexual activity.

“The defendant was to be brought to court today. That was all worked out. The sheriffs were going to be bringing him over,” Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney Jennifer Gonzalez said according to an NBC report.

“As I understand it, he refused transport and so that is why the defendant is not before your honor today,” she continued.

But Kelly’s defense attorney Steve Greenberg denied the allegation, arguing instead that the singer failed to show because of transportation issues.

“I don’t want to discuss matters that I discussed with the U.S. Marshals Service in open court,” Greenberg told Flood according to the report. “Suffice it to say, the Marshal Service says that moving Mr. Kelly is a large undertaking.”

Some of the transportation issues Greenberg could be referencing may include the fact that Kelly is facing several sexual abuse charges in several states including New York and recently Minnesota.

Kelly faces 40 counts, including two state counts brought against him earlier this month in Minnesota, that carry a combined maximum prison sentence of more than 500 years. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges aside from the new ones where he has yet to be arraigned.

The 21 Illinois state charges accuse him of sexually abusing three girls and a woman over a roughly 10-year period starting in the late 1990s. The two Minnesota charges, prostitution and solicitation, alleging that he invited a 17-year-old girl to his hotel room in 2001 and paid her $200 to dance naked with him.

The 13 federal counts brought in Chicago accuse him of, among other things, filming himself having sex with underage girls and of paying off potential witnesses in his 2008 trial to get them to change their stories. The New York federal charges accuse Kelly of running a racketeering enterprise that arranged for girls to have sex with the singer.

Thursday’s hearing proceeded without Kelly but he is due to appear for another status hearing on September 17.

America’s largest asteroid impact left a trail of destruction across the eastern US

About 35 million years ago, an asteroid traveling nearly 144,000 mph (231,000  km/h) smashed into the Atlantic Ocean near the modern-day town of Cape Charles, Virginia. The space rock vaporized instantly, but its impact triggered a gargantuan tsunami, cast up a monsoon of shattered rocks and molten glass that spanned hundreds of miles and carved out the single largest crater in the United States — the so-called Chesapeake Bay impact structure.

Today, that 25-mile-wide (40 kilometers) crater is buried half a mile below the rocky basement of Chesapeake Bay — the 200-mile-long (320 km) estuary linking Virginia and Maryland on the East Coast. That hasn’t stopped scientists from trying to piece together the site’s mysterious history since it was first discovered during a drilling project in 1990.

In a recent study of ocean sediment cores taken almost 250 miles (400 km) northeast of the impact site, researchers found traces of radioactive debris dating to the time of the strike, providing fresh evidence of the impact’s age and destructive power.

RELATED: CRASH! THE 10 BIGGEST IMPACT CRATERS ON EARTH

When the Chesapeake Bay impactor smashed into the Atlantic, it showered the surrounding land and water with shards of molten glass (known as “tektites”) for hundreds of miles in every direction. This rain of meteoric debris formed what scientists call the North American tektite strewn field, the study authors wrote, which stretches from Texas to Massachusetts to Barbados, covering about 4 million square miles (10 million square km) of terrain. By studying shards of meteoric rock buried deep within this sweeping field of impact wreckage, scientists can gather clues about the asteroid’s key characteristics, including its age.

In their recent study (published June 21 in the journal Meteoritics and Planetary Science), researchers from Arizona State University dated 21 microscopic shards of zircon — a durable gemstone that can survive underground for billions of years. These zircons were lodged in a sediment core taken from roughly 2,150 feet (655 meters) below the Atlantic Ocean. Not only is zircon commonly found in tektites, but it is also a choice mineral for radiometric dating, thanks to some of its radioactive elemental components.

In this case, the researchers used a dating technique called uranium–thorium–helium dating, which looks at how radioactive isotopes, or versions, of uranium and thorium decay into helium. By comparing the ratios of specific helium, thorium and uranium isotopes in each mineral sample, the researchers calculated approximately how long ago the zircon crystals solidified and started to decay.

The team found that the 21 crystals ranged widely in age, running the gamut from about 33 million to 300 million years old. The two youngest samples, which had an average age of about 35 million years old, fit in with previous studies’ estimates for the time of the Chesapeake Bay impact. A closer examination showed that the zircons also bore a cloudy appearance and deformed surface, two signs the minerals were kicked through the air and water by a great impact.

The team concluded that these two young crystals were part of the Chesapeake impact’s path of destruction, confirming that the impact occurred about 35 million years ago. Moreover, the researchers wrote, it showed that uranium–thorium–helium dating is a viable method for constraining the age of ancient impact events, giving scientists a fresh tool to reveal our planet’s long and violent past.
