Patriot Prayer leader Joey Gibson arrested on eve of Portland, Ore., protests

The leader of a conservative group was arrested Friday in Portland, Ore., one day before planned protests involving supporters of the far-left Antifa movement and supporters of several conservative groups.

Joey Gibson, leader of Portland-based Patriot Prayer, turned himself in to authorities in connection with an arrest warrant for rioting, stemming from a violent clash in the city on May 1, according to the Associated Press. He was later released after posting bail, with further legal action pending.

In a video posted on Facebook, Gibson accused police of targeting conservative groups for arrests but not members of Antifa, even though masked Antifa supporters have been seen on videos engaging in violence during past protests.

Gibson asserted that authorities were trying to intimidate conservatives who planned to protest Saturday.

“They want you to not show up in Portland, they want to put fear in your hearts,” Gibson said.

GABRIEL NADALES: ANTIFA VIOLENCE FEARED IN PORTLAND SATURDAY — GROUP MUST BE CONDEMNED AND EXPOSED

Gibson, 35, was not connected to the events planned for Saturday but had organized Portland rallies that turned violent in 2017 and 2018, the report said.

Separately, a conservative group called the Oath Keepers has decided it will not participate Saturday, saying it did not believe organizers had done enough to discourage white supremacists from showing up.

Portland authorities have been taking steps intended to minimize the chances that Saturday’s demonstrations repeat the violence of past events. Personnel from more than two-dozen law enforcement agencies – representing local, state and federal government – are involved in trying to maintain order during the demonstrations, the AP reported.

“I’m confident that from a law enforcement perspective, we’re going to have all the tools and the resources and personnel we need,” Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler said Friday on Fox News’ “Outnumbered Overtime.”

The mayor, a Democrat, has drawn criticism over the city’s handling of past protests.

In June, conservative writer Andy Ngo was hospitalized after being attacked by Antifa supporters at a Portland demonstration.

On Friday, Ngo told “Fox & Friends” that he feared Saturday’s event “has the potential to be a powder keg.”

Precautions being taken in Portland for Saturday include plans by many downtown businesses to close for the day, as well as the planned closure of the Hawthorne Bridge, which connects eastern Portland to the downtown area, across the Willamette River, OregonLive reported.

Some jail staffers not cooperating with DOJ investigation into Epstein suicide, source says

Personnel at the New York City prison where accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein committed suicide last week have not been initially cooperative with investigators from the Department of Justice, a federal source told Fox News Friday.

Attorney General William Barr sent two senior DOJ officials to personally visit the Metropolitan Correctional Center and speak with staff from the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) in order to gather information on Epstein’s death after Barr said officials uncovered “serious irregularities” at the jail, a senior DOJ official told Fox News. The officials have been on site since Thursday and the FBI and the Justice Department’s inspector general are investigating conditions at the MCC.

NEW YORK MEDICAL EXAMINER: JEFFREY EPSTEIN’S DEATH WAS A SUICIDE BY HANGING

BOP officials from various regional offices have also been sent to the Manhattan facility to lend their expertise and insight. In addition, a separate BOP “After Action Team” went to MCC earlier this week in an effort to examine what happened the night Epstein died. The use of the “After Action Team” is part of BOP protocol whenever a “significant event takes place at a prison.

Epstein was found dead in his cell on Aug. 10. Earlier Friday, New York City’s medical examiner officially ruled the 66-year-old’s death a suicide by hanging.

Fox News has also learned that 20 of 21 prison staff posts were filled between the hours of 4 p.m. and 12 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 9, the day before Epstein was found. Of those prison workers, six of them were working voluntary overtime. Between 12 a.m. and 8 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10, 18 of 19 staff posts were filled. Of those 18 staffers, 10 were working overtime and all but one of those were doing so voluntarily.

Conspiracy theories swirled following Epstein’s death, as many wondered how the wealthy financier could have been able to kill himself in a high-security facility just over two weeks after being placed on suicide watch, though officials later confirmed Epstein had been taken off suicide watch shortly before his death.

Correctional officers did not check in with Epstein for “several hours” before his death, despite being required to visit him every 30 minutes, a person familiar with the situation told Fox News earlier this week.

Jail guards on duty the night of Epstein’s death are also suspected of falsifying log entries to show they were checking on inmates every half-hour as required, The Associated Press reported, citing several people familiar with the matter.

Two staffers have been placed on administrative leave and the MCC’s warden has been reassigned pending an investigation.

Late Friday, Epstein’s attorneys issued a statement decrying what they described as “the harsh, even medieval conditions at the MCC.”

“It is indisputable that the authorities violated their own protocols,”  Martin Weinberg, Reid Weingarten and Michael Miller said. “The defense team fully intends to conduct its own independent and complete investigation into the circumstances and cause of Mr. Epstein’s death including if necessary legal action to view the pivotal videos – if they exist as they should – of the area proximate to Mr. Epstein’s cell during the time period leading to his death.

“We are not satisfied with the conclusions of the medical examiner,” the statement concluded. ” We will have a more complete response in the coming days

The Secret Service arrested a man who was wearing a bulletproof vest and carrying a knife outside the Israeli embassy in Washington, D.C., on Friday.

Officers responded to a reported of a suspicious person and vehicle in the area of the embassy at approximately 7:45 a.m. and saw the suspect was wearing a ballistic vest and had a folding knife in his pocket, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

A police report said the man was “making nonsensical statements” while speaking to officers.

When officers located and searched the suspect’s vehicle, they discovered ammunition. They seized a folding knife and two .223 Remington cartridges. The suspect was arrested for carrying a dangerous weapon and possession of unregistered ammunition.

Security at the Israeli Embassy had spotted the man Friday morning and noticed he was wearing what appeared to be a bulletproof vest and acting abnormally, although he did not act aggressively, they said. Embassy security then notified the Secret Service.

Streets around the embassy were blocked off for several hours.

The incident comes the same day that Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., said she will not travel to the West Bank to visit her family there, despite getting permission from Israel’s interior minister.

Earlier this year, Israel said Tlaib and Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., could enter the country for an upcoming trip, which had been scheduled for this weekend. But Israel said Thursday the two women would not be allowed to enter due to their support of an anti-Israel boycott movement.

Israel later said Tlaib could enter the country to visit her grandmother, who is in her 90s.

President Trump had said it would show “great weakness” if Israel allowed Tlaib and Omar into the country.

Longtime FOX 8 New Orleans reporter and anchor Nancy Parker was one of two people killed Friday when a small plane crashed near the city’s Lakefront Airport, the station confirmed.

The pilot, identified by Fox 8 as Franklin J.P. Augustus, also died in the crash, which happened just after 3 p.m. The station said Parker was shooting a story in a stunt plane at the time of the accident.

Parker, 53, had worked at the station for 23 years. She is survived by her husband and three children.

SMALL PLANE CRASH AT SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AIRPORT KILLS 2, OFFICIALS SAY

“Today we mourn the loss of our longtime colleague and friend Nancy Parker,”  FOX 8 said in a Facebook post. “Details have not been released by authorities, but we can confirm she passed away in [a] plane crash while covering a story at the New Orleans Lakefront Airport.

“Nancy was a part of the FOX 8 family for the last 23 years,” the post continued. “She put her heart and soul into her work, covering thousands of stories and touching countless lives. She made a difference in the lives of those she reported on. She will be sorely missed, and her absence creates a void that cannot be filled.”

“Nancy was absolutely a joy to work with each and every day,” FOX 8 Vice President and General Manager Tim Ingram said. “Today we lost a wonderful journalist and remarkable friend, the New Orleans television community lost a true treasure, but beyond that, her family lost a wife, a mother and daughter. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.”

A Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) statement said the plane was a 1983 Pitts S-2B aircraft that crashed in an empty field about a half-mile south of the airport, which accommodates smaller aircraft, under unknown circumstances. That model aircraft is a biplane.

New Orleans Homeland Security Director Collin Arnold told reporters the plane crashed about 3 p.m., causing a fire.

“It looks like the plane is completely charred,” said Gerald Herbert, an Associated Press photographer who also is a pilot and has a hangar at Lakefront Airport. He went to the site and described charred debris lying near a fence in a grassy field.

Fox 8 reported that the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are sending investigators to New Orleans to look into the crash.

Gayle Benson, the owner of the New Orleans Saints, said Parker will be “sadly missed.”

“On behalf of my late husband Tom, to the family of WVUE-FOX 8, we offer our deepest sympathy to the tragic loss of Nancy Parker,” she said in a statement Friday night. “Nancy was an outstanding, Emmy Award-winning news anchor, who fostered great trust with both those who she covered and with her viewers in the New Orleans area.”

“Not only was she a leader in local television, she was a devoted wife to her husband Glynn and mother to their three beautiful children; Parker, Piper, and Pierce,” Benson added. “She was a dear friend and a frequent guest at local philanthropic lunches and at our family farm in Kentucky. She will be sadly missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to Nancy’s family.”

Former Democratic National Committee chairwoman Donna Brazile called the ongoing dispute between members of “the Squad” and the Israeli government “really sad” Friday while discussing the Jewish state’s decision to block the congresswomen from visiting the country.

“I think this entire conversation is really sad, sad for several reasons,” Brazile said on “The Story with Martha MacCallum

RASHIDA TLAIB SIGNALS SHE WON’T GO TO WEST BANK, DESPITE GETTING ISRAELI MINISTER’S PERMISSION

Israeli officials decided to prevent U.S. Reps. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., and Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., from entering the country as part of a planned visit amid concerns about their support for the Boycott, Divest, Sanction (BDS) movement.

Earlier Friday, Tlaib abruptly canceled plans to visit family in the West Bank after the Israeli government granted permission for the trip, saying “oppressive conditions meant to humiliate me would break my grandmother’s heart.”

Brazile said that Israel, the congresswomen and President Trump all made a mistake.

“It’s a mistake to target members of Congress because of their views or their viewpoints,” she said. “I think it was a mistake initially for the president to even tweet that they should not be allowed to go to Israel. I have faith in Israel’s ability to listen to two members of the United States Congress. So I think it’s been a huge mistake.”

Brazile told MacCallum that she hopes both sides can move on to something “more healing.”

Seventy-five years ago this week, American and French forces invaded Nazi-occupied southern France in a mission that was supposed to coincide with D-Day to the north.

Michigan veteran Roland Barhyte recalled the so-called “forgotten invasion” in an interview Friday on “The Story.”

“It was kind of surprising, in that we were one of the few to make daylight jumps,” he said.

“Most paratroop drops were done in the darkness — before dawn if possible. Our actual jump and landing and assembling on the ground was rather uneventful because there were no enemy troops firing at us — thank goodness.”

During the operation, Barhyte and his unit, the 551st Parachute Infantry Regiment, moved along the Mediterranean coast, liberating cities from Nazi control.

Many of the soldiers were to move north, pushing the Nazi units toward those Allies who had invaded Normandy that June, according to MLive.

In his interview, Barhyte also recalled his service in the Battle of the Bulge in late 1944 and early 1945.

At one point, he said his feet were so badly frozen, it felt like he was, “walking on bowling balls.”

He was taken to a hospital in Belgium to be treated.

“That was the last combat that I actually saw,” he said of the famous skirmish in the Ardennes.

Starting on Aug. 15, 1944, French and American troops — 350,000 in total — landed on the French Riviera. U.S. forces drove north while French troops — many from French colonies in Africa — moved along the coast to secure key ports. Marseille was liberated on Aug. 28.

Soldiers from the Normandy landings, known as Operation Overlord, met troops from Operation Dragoon on Sept. 12 near Dijon, in the eastern region of Burgundy. Most of France was under control of Allied forces by the end of September.

Events surrounding a now-curtailed trip to Israel by Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., show the freshman lawmaker wanted to cause trouble, according to Greg Gutfeld.

However, Gutfeld’s co-host Juan Williams claimed Friday on “The Five” that it was President Trump who had acted inappropriately in regard to the itinerary.

“She wrote a letter saying she dearly needed to see her very old grandmother,” Gutfeld said of the Detroit-area Democrat.

“And, Israel approved. And then she said, ‘Ah, you know what, I’m not going to do it.’ So, she used her elderly grandmother as a prop for a stunt.

“Let’s not forget the trip that she was planning … was put together or planned with an anti-Semitic group.”

Gutfeld added Tlaib’s actions showed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his administration acted responsibly in the matter.

“If someone is going to your house specifically to vandalize it or destroy it, you shouldn’t have them there,” he said.

“Then she used her grandmother as a Trojan horse to get in. It’s disgusting.”

However, Williams had another view, instead calling Trump’s actions “disgusting.”

ISRAEL BLOCKS OMAR, TLAIB FROM ENTERING COUNTRY AMID PRESSURE FROM TRUMP

President Trump going to a foreign country and saying that a member of our Congress can’t travel to your country — and our president is working against the U.S. government? It’s outrageous,” he said.

“He wants to make these four somehow the face of the Democratic Party,” he said of progressive freshman House members, Tlaib among them, who comprise “the Squad.”

In making the initial decision preventing entry in an official capacity, Netanyahu said travel plans by Tlaib and Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., referred to a trip to “Palestine,” not Israel, and the congresswomen were not interested in meeting with Israeli officials.

He went on to note that the Palestinian organization that planned the visit, MIFTAH, supports the boycott-Israel movement, and that people associated with the group have supported terror against Israel in the past.

HOUSE OVERWHELMINGLY OKS RESOLUTION OPPOSING ISRAEL BOYCOTT IN RARE BIPARTISAN VOTE

However, in a letter sent to Interior Minister Aryeh Deri, Tlaib had requested a chance to visit her Palestinian grandmother, who lives in the West Bank, according to The Jerusalem Post.

“This could be my last opportunity to see her,” Tlaib wrote of her grandmother, who is in her 90s. “I will respect any restrictions and I will not promote any boycotts against Israel during my visit.”

Tlaib was later given permission to visit, but the Michigan lawmaker turned down the offer.

“I have decided that visiting my grandmother under these oppressive conditions stands against everything I believe in–fighting against racism, oppression & injustice,” she tweeted.

Colin Kaepernick’s girlfriend slams Jay-Z for NFL partnership

The girlfriend of former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick blasted hip-hop star Jay-Z over his recently announced partnership with the NFL, calling it “disgusting and disappointing.”

“We will never turn our backs on @kaepernick7 because your idols decided to work with the same organization that is actively keeping Colin unemployed all because he peacefully protested against social injustice in black and brown communities, specifically police brutality,” radio personality Nessa wrote on Instagram Thursday night.

“So really, how can Jay-Z and the NFL utter social justice in their partnership while keeping Colin unemployed because of his social justice work?”

Earlier this week, the NFL announced that it is collaborating with Jay-Z’s entertainment company, Roc Nation, which will help select music artists for high-profile performances including the Super Bowl.

As part of the partnership, Roc Nation will have a role in the NFL’s “Inspire Change” campaign, which aims to strengthen social justice. However, the Grammy-winning rapper is facing backlash for his business deal after previously showing solidarity with Kaepernick. Kaepernick gained notoriety, and the scorn of figures including President Trump, for faking a knee during the national anthem to call attention to social injustice and police brutality in minority communities.

“It’s typical for the NFL to buy different PR looks to cover up their dirt- that’s nothing new. But what is disgusting and disappointing is Jay-Z let them use him,” Nessa told her Instagram followers. “Whether Jay-Z knew it or not (I don’t doubt his intelligence-so I would think he knew) he helped the NFL bury who he said is an iconic figure, Colin Kaepernick.”

She continued, “Don’t tell me there’s a “master plan and wait for it” because the ONLY reason anything would ever change is because THE PEOPLE are loud and clear and won’t let the league buy their loyalty with their disingenuous moves. The people are letting the league and anyone who works with them know that they aren’t buying the bs.”

The comments came as Kaepernick recently celebrated the three-year anniversary since he began kneeling during the anthem in order to protest police brutality.

An MSNBC guest questioned the intelligence of Trump voters on Friday, asking if anyone who attended President Trump‘s rally in Manchester, N.H., can “point out Greenland on a map?”

On Thursday, the Wall Street Journal reported that Trump has asked his advisers whether the U.S. can acquire Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory, during “meetings, dinners, and passing conversations” because of Greenland’s “abundant resources and geopolitical importance.”

However, “The Beat” managing editor Tiffany Cross expressed concern when she heard that “the descendants of colonizers” are flimsily considering “taking land from indigenous people.”

“This is something, you know his supporters are like just blind followers of his, and I wonder when this becomes a talking point of his on the campaign trail, can anybody at the MAGA rally point out Greenland on a map?” Cross asked.

“I would be very interested and curious to see or tell us what kind of government Greenland has or who the indigenous people are. I highly doubt it. So I think when you have a lack of understanding of global diplomacy, you can easily throw out these asinine ideas and have, you know, the sheep following the wolf.”

Greenland, which has a population of roughly 56,000, has welcomed U.S. military personnel to its Thule Air Base as part of a treaty between the U.S. and Denmark that has been used by both U.S. Air Force Space Command and the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and includes a ballistic missile radar station.

The Journal reported that advisers have said Trump sees purchasing Greenland as similar to the 1867 U.S. acquisition of Alaska from Russia. It remains unclear how the president would realistically pursue such a deal.
