Google summit on climate change attended by stars in private jets, mega yachts slammed as ‘hypocritical’

Google’s recent climate change conference – which was attended by Leonardo DiCaprioKaty Perry, Orlando Bloom, and other A-list stars – is being slammed as “hypocritical” by many.

Following an Italian press report claiming that the Google Campers would flock to Sicily for a three-day, $20 million event in 114 private jets, social media users were quick to point out what they saw as a disconnect.

“Is there anything more hypocritical than a bunch of rich people flying their private jets across the world to sit on yachts and discuss the future of our planet?” one Twitter user asked.

KATY PERRY, MORE STARS ATTEND GOOGLE SUMMIT ON CLIMATE CHANGE IN PRIVATE JETS, MEGA YACHTS

Wrote another individual: “Wow, just wow. Has google not heard about video conference.”

“LOL the irony,” commented one person.

“Wow … if it’s so bad, why did all the Google execs, rich folks & celebrities fly 114 private jets, yachts, & limos to the climate change summit in Italy? Hypocrisy? Climate hoax?” asked another social media user.

HARRISON FORD SLAMS TRUMP FOR ‘DENIGRATING SCIENCE’

And another: “The hypocrisy of all these celebrities and billionaires that are travelling to a climate change summit in their private jets! The fact that Google spent $20bn on this initiative just shows that they’d rather look the part than be the part! Put that money INTO ACTION! not a parade!”

Then there was this: “Several #celebrities, wealthy and famous people have arrived in Sicily for #Google summit to discuss climate change. Are these folks going to push for a bill to be passed to ban use of private jets and mega yachts?”

“Really not concerned about the environment at all!” commented one person.

“LOL so they’re using more fossil fuels just getting there than most people use in a year and yet we’re going to discuss climate change,” wrote another.

“Oxymoron defined. The 1%ers are by far the biggest contributors to Global Warming on the planet…” said one person.

As previously reported, Hollywood’s elite, along with the likes of former President Barack Obama and Prince Harry, jetted to an Italian resort for the Google Camp, which focused on climate change.

STARS REACT TO DEMOCRATIC DEBATE

“Everything is about global warming, that is the major topic this year,” a source told the New York Post on Tuesday.

Many of the guests, including Obama and DiCaprio – who has his own climate change foundation – have described global warming as the biggest threat to future generations.

“Google Camp is meant to be a place where influential people get together to discuss how to make the world better,” another insider told the Post. “There will likely be discussions about online privacy, politics, human rights, and of course, the environment, which makes it highly ironic that this event requires 114 private jets to happen.”

Attendees, who according to a source were personally invited by Google co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page, reportedly footed the bill for their travel costs to Sicily’s Verdura Resort, but Google paid the rest of their expenses. Rooms reportedly start at $903 a night there.

Other luminaries reportedly in attendance: Bradley Cooper, Nick Jonas, Priyanka Chopra, Gayle King, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, designer Diane von Furstenberg and Barry Diller.

Furstenberg and Diller reportedly arrived via their $200 million yacht Eos; Dreamworks founder David Geffen is said to have given Perry and Bloom a lift to the event on his $400 million yacht, Rising Sun.

Rep. Will Hurd, only black Republican in House, won’t seek reelection

Rep. Will Hurd, R-Texas, the lone black Republican in the House of Representatives, announced Thursday he will not seek reelection.

Hurd’s pending retirement is the latest in a rash of Texas of them by GOP lawmakers who’ve decided to leave Congress.

“After reflecting on how best to help our country address these challenges, I have made the decision to not seek reelection for the 23rd Congressional District of Texas in order to pursue opportunities outside the halls of Congress to solve problems at the nexus between technology and national security,” Hurd said in a statement.

A former undercover CIA officer, Hurd, 41, said he plans to “pursue opportunities outside the halls of Congress to solve problems at the nexus between technology and national security.” He is the third Texas Republican to announce his retirement in recent weeks.

Reps. Mike Conway and Pete Olson are also retreating from public life. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee said Hurd is one of a number of Texas Republicans fearful of losing their seats over their support of President Trump.

“Like we said last week, Republicans across the Lone Star State are terrified of losing their seats in 2020 and Will Hurd just joined the list,” a DCCC statement said. “Hurd has been a lockstep supporter of the worst of Washington Republicans’ policies and he sealed his fate when he pledged to vote for Donald Trump in 2020. Democrats will win this seat and if Will Hurd doesn’t believe he can keep his job in a changing Texas, his colleagues must be having second thoughts too.”

Hurd was first elected in 2014 after leaving his job at the CIA to give Congress new leadership on intelligence and national security matters, he said.

His congressional district runs 820 miles along the U.S.-Mexico border from San Antonio to El Paso. He narrowly won in 2016 and 2018 in a district carried by Hillary Clinton.

REP. WILL HURD DISINVITED TO CYBERSECURITY CONFERENCE AFTER VOTING RECORD ON WOMEN’S ISSUES SPARKS OUTRAGE

The district has flipped several times between Democrats and Republicans, according to The New York Times. With Hurd’s retirement, the district leans Democratic, according to Crystal Ball House ratings.

In an interview with The Washington Post, Hurd said he plans to vote for Trump in 2020. He said conservative themes were being drowned out by racially-charged rhetoric, making it harder to attract Hispanics, African-Americans and other groups.

While he supports Trump, the three-term congressman has broken with the president. He opposes Trump’s border wall proposal and his national emergency declaration to divert Pentagon funds for wall construction, The Post reported.

Last month, Hurd was one of a handful of Republicans to vote to condemn Trump’s attacks on four Democratic minority congresswomen.

He said he would like to remain involved in politics to “help make sure the Republican Party looks like America.”

Tulsi Gabbard: Kamala Harris ignored challenge from me, lobbed ‘cheap’ smears instead

Democratic presidential candidate Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii, ripped fellow 2020 contender Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., claiming she refused to answer direct criticism of her record.

Harris is the wrong candidate to be heralding a record of criminal justice reform because of her record as a former California state attorney general, Gabbard claimed Thursday on “Tucker Carlson Tonight.”

“Voters deserve to know the truth,” she said.

“The decision that the American people have before them is a critical one. The decision that Democrats have before them about who their nominee should be is a very important one.

TULSI GABBARD RIPS KAMALA HARRIS ON HER RECORD AS CALIFORNIA PROSECUTOR DURING SECOND DEBATE

“They deserve to know the truth about the candidates that are before them, and especially on the issue of criminal justice reform that’s impacting so many people across this country because it is so broken and it is an unjust criminal justice system.”

During Wednesday’s debate, the Gabbard challenged Harris’ record, claiming she imprisoned hundreds of people for marijuana violations then made light of her past reported use of cannabis during a more recent interview.

“Senator Harris says she’s proud of her record as a prosecutor and that she’ll be a prosecutor president, but I’m deeply concerned about this record,” Gabbard said.

More from Media

“There are too many examples to cite but she put over 1,500 people in jail for marijuana violations and then laughed about it when she was asked if she ever smoked marijuana.”

She also blasted Harris for maintaining the cash bail system which, she argued, disproportionately hurt poor people. Gabbard accused Harris of keeping prisoners beyond their sentence in order to use them as “cheap labor” as well as blocking evidence that would have “freed an innocent man from death row.”

KAMALA HARRIS’ MARIJUANA RECORD: HOW THE CALIFORNIA DEMOCRAT’S VIEWS ON POT HAVE EVOLVED

In a February appearance on New York’s “The Breakfast Club” radio show, Harris spoke about her opinion of marijuana.

“I think it gives a lot of people joy. And we need more joy in the world,” Harris said at the time.

In her interview with Carlson, Gabbard said the California Democrat owed an apology to some of those she helped put behind bars.

She added the state AG role offered an opportunity for Harris to effect change in criminal justice reform.

“Senator Kamala Harris was in a position to be able to make a difference on that when she was serving as Attorney General,” she said.

“As I pointed out last night, she did not fulfill that promise that she claims to have, which is to be a champion for the people, a champion for the oppressed. In fact, she did the exact opposite.

“She made decisions that ended up hurting people.”

In addition, Gabbard said Harris’ campaign “smeared” her following the debate.

“The responses from her and her campaign… was basically to lob cheap smears and basically say that I’m a traitor or a foreign agent or a Trojan horse or whatever.”

“This is concerning on many levels about how a Senator Harris would govern as president, that if there are those who are critics of her or her record — you know for me I’m a two-time veteran of Middle East deployments, I’m a soldier currently serving in the Army, I’m a sitting member of Congress — and she’s smearing me in this way. Imagine what she would do to anyone else.”

Top Navy SEAL officer tells men ‘We have a problem’ in wake of scandals, controversies

The U.S. Navy commander in charge of all SEAL teams told his men “we have a problem” in a memo written late last month after a series of scandals rocked the Naval Special Warfare community.

“Some of our subordinate formations have failed to maintain good order and discipline and as a result and for good reason, our NSW [Naval Special Warefare] culture is being questioned,” Rear Adm. Collin Green wrote in the July 25 memo obtained by Fox News Thursday.

Green added that while “I don’t know yet if we have a culture problem, I do know that we have a good order and discipline problem that must be addressed immediately. Good order and discipline is the foundation for every military organization and it is a leadership responsibility. As Commander, I own it. As Commodores, you also own it.”

NAVY SEAL PLATOON BEING SENT HOME FROM IRAQ OVER MISCONDUCT, REPORTS SAY

The letter does not specifically reference any incidents, which allegedly include drug use and heavy drinking, involving members of SEAL teams in recent months,

SEAL commanders have until Aug. 7 to “develop a plan of action” on how to fix the “problem,” according to the memo.

The letter was written the day after reports surfaced that a Navy SEAL platoon from San Diego, Calif., was ordered back to the U.S. from Iraq because of a “deterioration of good order and discipline.”

The U.S. Special Operations Command said in a July 24 statement, “The Commander lost confidence in the team’s ability to accomplish the mission.”

The statement did not describe the exact nature of the misconduct, but The Washington Post, citing two defense officials, told the newspaper that the SEALs involved in the incident had violated a general order against the use of alcohol.

The platoon that was ordered back to the U.S. is part of SEAL Team 7, whose members included Chief Eddie Gallagher, who was acquitted of war crimes charges last month but convicted of posing with a dead ISIS fighter, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

Testimony during Gallagher’s court-martial revealed that members of SEAL Team 7’s Alpha Platoon routinely consumed alcohol during their 2017 deployment to Iraq, according to The Military Times.

NAVY SEAL EDWARD GALLAGHER FOUND NOT GUILTY ON MURDER AND ATTEMPTED MURDER CHARGES

The same week the platoon was ordered back to the U.S, The Navy Times reported, citing an internal investigation, that six members of a Virginia-based SEAL team tested positive for cocaine use “and other banned substances” last year after repeatedly cheating to get around military drug tests.

Meanwhile, a Navy SEAL Team 6 member who was named Sailor of the Year in 2016 has been charged with impersonating other people via text to get nude pictures of women, the Virginian-Pilot reported last week.

In May, a Navy SEAL pleaded guilty in the hazing death of a Green Beret soldier, admitting to taking part in a late-night plot to break into 34-year-old Army Staff Sgt. Logan Melgar’s room with a sledgehammer, put him in a chokehold and restrain him with duct tape during a deployment in Africa.

Chief Special Warfare Operator Adam Matthews said that he, along with another member of the Navy’s SEAL Team 6 and two elite Marine Raiders, carried out the “juvenile” attack on June 4, 2017, in Bamako, Mali.

Matthews’ attorney, Grover Baxley, said Melgar’s death was “an unforeseen accident that has dramatically impacted the lives of everyone involved.”

According to The Washington Post, the tragedy occurred after a long night of drinking and partying. Two SEALs and two Marine Raiders smashed their way into Melgar’s room with a sledgehammer because they purportedly wanted to teach him a lesson for leaving them behind in traffic on the way to a party at the French embassy.

One of the SEALs jumped on Melgar and put him in a chokehold while Matthews grabbed Melgar’s legs. The two Marines then duct-taped his legs together. When they moved on to Melgar’s wrists, they realized he had stopped breathing.

In his memo, Green directed commanders “to engage everyone in your formations.”

He wrote, “I want all hands to understand that ‘we have a problem’ and that is our main effort and my top priority”

Hickenlooper: I don’t believe ‘in the pathway’ of the more progressive Dems

Democratic presidential candidate John Hickenlooper appeared on “The Story with Martha MacCallum” Thursday where he defended his candidacy and positions while arguing he believes many of the same things as the more progressive frontrunners do — he just does not share their “approach.”

“I don’t agree with… the pathway they’re choosing to get there. So, I agree that we’ve got to address climate change hard and fast. I agree that we’ve got to get to universal health care coverage. I just disagree on how we get there,” Hickenlooper told host Bill Hemmer.

The former Governor of Colorado reacted to the Democratic infighting at this week’s debates and explained his position on the “Green New Deal” and “Medicare-for-all,” defending his comments Tuesday that it was a distraction.

“I say that the distraction is creating something that won’t get out of Congress, right or if it does it will probably end up in the courts,” Hickenlooper said.

“Green New Deal” co-sponsor Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., took issue with Hickenlooper calling it a distraction Tuesday during the debate.

“The Green New Deal decarbonizes our economy while ensuring we leave no community behind, incl job transitions for miners, labor rights, healthcare & wages,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted. “Calling the consideration of working people in climate policy a ‘distraction’ is what is truly unsustainable + unrealistic.”

Hickenlooper also responded to Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., who was critical of the more moderate candidates Tuesday night saying he believed in “big, bold ideas” but disagreed with how to implement them, arguing that a plan was needed now and that “ultimately it might take 15 or 20 years but you end up with some version of a single-payer.”

The former governor also defended former President Barack Obama, saying “that was a point I had the most trouble with” Wednesday night during the second half of the debate.

“Woah,” CNN anchor Erin Burnett reacted.

“I just want Joe Biden — why can’t he just simply admit, ‘Hey, I made some mistakes, I did some things wrong, I want to correct those things going forward,'” he continued.

At least two protesters stood and began waving large white cloths with slogans scrawled on them during President Trump’s Cincinnati, Ohio campaign rally on Thursday.

Trump was in the midst of remarks on how he believes Democratic leadership in some urban areas lead to their decline.

“The Democrat record is one of neglect and corruption and decay — total decay,” he said.

Democrats have taxed and regulated jobs and opportunity out of these cities — they’ve squeezed the blood out of them. So many of these mayors… are in jail.”

When Trump claimed Democratic lawmakers care more about illegal immigrants than their own constituents, the trio began making a commotion at stage left.

One banner read, “immigrants built America,” while another had a crude slogan that has at times been used as part of anti-ICE protests across the country.

Two Trump supporters appeared to confront two protesters, as a man exchanged words with a male protester.

Another man wearing a suit leaned over to snatch a female protesters’ cloth.

Amid the commotion, the typically large crowd in the arena began chanting, “Trump, Trump, Trump,” as law enforcement sought to remove the protesters.

One young protester flashed the crowd an obscene gesture during the proceedings

Those chants transitioned into, “USA, USA, USA” and cheers that erupted as the protesters were led away.

During the incident, the president leaned forward on the dais to ask supporters in the front row if Cincinnati had a Democratic mayor.

After nodding, he returned to the microphone and said, “You must have a Democrat mayor?”

“Well, that’s what happens,” he continued, transitioning into a commentary on the size of the crowd in the arena and those who were unable to get in.

The city’s mayor, John Cranley, is a Democrat. He is in his second term and previously lost two bids to unseat the area’s congressional lawmaker, U.S. Rep. Steve Chabot, R-Ohio, — in 2000 and 2006.

Juan Williams to critics calling on Comey to be charged: ‘Get off that horse’

The Five” reacted to news that former FBI director James Comey will not be prosecuted for leaking classified information, irking some his critics who believe he should face charges.

“I’m not a lawyer but if I speed, if I was going 85 in a 55 but I didn’t intend to do so I’m still getting a ticket. It says he didn’t intend to give out confidential memos because it wasn’t labeled confidential when he gave them out,” co-host Brian Kilmeade said Wednesday, perplexed by the Department of Justice’s decision.

Sources told Fox News that the DOJ decided against prosecuting Comey for leaking classified information following a referral from the department’s inspector general

Comey penned memos memorializing his interactions with President Trump in the days leading up to his firing. He then passed those documents to a friend, Columbia University Law Professor Daniel Richman, who gave them to The New York Times. Comey admitted to that arrangement during congressional testimony.

Co-host Juan Williams argued that it was time for critics of Comey to “get off that horse” and accept the DOJ’s decision,

“Bill Barr is a political player on the Trump team and he said this wasn’t even close… And yet you have people who will want to play tribal politics say ‘oh yeah this is a double standard. Why isn’t he being hit,'” Williams said calling for everyone to move on.

Co-host Greg Gutfeld weighed in saying that while he didn’t understand the decision he wanted to move on.

“It’s Bill Barr who made this decision and I don’t want to be like the anti-Trumpers who live in the past. I like to think about the future,” Gutfeld said. “You know I you know I know that there’s a lot of wrongdoing on both sides but on that side especially.”
