At least seven people were wounded by gunfire early Sunday in Chicago after someone opened fire near a playground on the city’s west side.

The shooting happened around 1:20 a.m. in Douglas Park, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Authorities said someone shot their weapon from inside a black Chevrolet Camaro on the street.

Those injured ranged in age from 19 to 25.

Three women, ages 19, 22 and 25, were transported to the hospital, where their conditions were stabilized, the news outlet reported. One man, 20, was taken to the hospital and was in stable condition, while another man, 21, was taken to the hospital but was in critical condition.

Chinese movie star Fan Bingbing, who is believed to have been disappeared by her own nation for four months last year, is now thanking its Communist authorities for her punishment.

“It may be a trough I encountered in my life or in my work, but this trough is actually a good thing,” she told the New York Times Saturday, in her first interview with Western media since she vanished from public view and shut down her active social media presence in June 2018.

“It has made me calm down and think seriously about what I want to do in my future life,” she said.

Fan, who has starred in dozens of Chinese films and TV series and in American blockbusters like 2014’s “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” was once known as China’s most highly paid actress.

AOC aide faces Fed investigation amid resignation: report

Westlake Legal Group aa1c0969-Alexandria-Ocasio-Cortez AOC aide faces Fed investigation amid resignation: report Ronn Blitzer fox-news/person/alexandria-ocasio-cortez fox news fnc/politics fnc c5a7d964-7fb1-55f4-bad3-1d7ecfa0d267 article

The controversial chief of staff for Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., who resigned on Friday is currently being investigated by federal officials, a new report says.

Saikat Chakrabarti faced a complaint filed with the Federal Election Commission in March for alleged violations having to do with illegal fundraising. An investigation is currently underway, sources told the New York Post. According to the FEC, complaints only lead to investigations if there is enough evidence for them to believe there may have been a violation.

OCASIO-CORTEZ’S EMBATTLED CHIEF OF STAFF LEAVING POST AFTER CONTROVERSIES

“Upon finding reason to believe that a violation has occurred or is about to occur, the Commission may authorize an investigation,” an FEC enforcement guidebook says.

The investigation is reportedly related to Brand New Congress and Justice Democrats, two PACs Chakrabarti started to back progressive candidates. The March complaint alleged that the groups funneled more than $885,000 to the similarly named Brand New Campaign LLC and the Brand New Congress LLC — companies controlled by Chakrabarti that, unlike PACs, are exempt from reporting all of their significant expenditures. The PACs claimed the payments were for “strategic consulting.”

Chakrabarti and Ocasio-Cortez were hit with another complaint in April over accusations that they used Brand New Congress LLC to illegally provide in-kind political contributions by offering consulting services for cheap rates, operating at a loss by only charging candidates a portion of the costs.

Ocasio-Cortez has denied any wrongdoing, telling reporters in April: “It’s conservative interest groups just filing bogus proposals.”

Federal officials are also looking into Chakrabarti’s salary from Ocasio-Cortez, the Post reported. The independently wealthy aide earned $80,000, as opposed to the average of $146,830. This not only allowed junior staff members to get a pay bump, it let Chakrabarti avoid requirements to reveal outside income, which only kick in for those earning at least $126,000.

The FEC did not immediately respond to Fox News’ request for comment, and Chakrabarti could not be reached. A statement from Ocasio-Cortez’s office announcing Chakrabarti’s departure said he was leaving in order to take a new role at the non-profit group New Consensus to help with work on a Green New Deal.

Earlier this summer, Chakrabarti put himself at the center of a rift in the Democratic Party, with Ocasio-Cortez and Reps. Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, and Rashida Tlaib on one side, and the party’s establishment led by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on the other.

HOUSE DEMOCRATIC CAUCUSE RIPS AOC’S CHIEF OF STAFF FOR CRITICIZING LAWMAKER: ‘KEEP HER NAME OUT OF YOUR MOUTH’

In June, he criticized Rep. Sharice Davids, D-Kansas, for her votes on issues to do with the migrant crisis at the border.

“I don’t think people have to be personally racist to enable a racist system. And the same could even be said of the Southern Democrats. I don’t believe Sharice is a racist person, but her votes are showing her to enable a racist system,” he tweeted.

The caucus Twitter account reacted by saying, “Who is this guy and why is he explicitly singling out a Native American woman of color?” an apparent reference to how Ocasio-Cortez accused Pelosi of singling out women of color by making comments about her and the other progressive freshman congresswomen.

Beto O’Rourke says Trump’s rhetoric in part to blame for El Paso mass shooting

Democratic presidential primary candidate Beto O’Rourke said on Sunday that President Trump’s harsh rhetoric toward immigrants and Latinos was in part to blame for Saturday’s mass shooting inside an El Paso, Texas, Walmart that left 20 people dead and scores more injured.

O’Rourke, a former Texas congressman whose district includes El Paso, said that he believes Trump is a white nationalist and likened the president’s language to that of Nazi Germanys’ “Third Reich.”

“Let’s be very clear about what is causing this and who the president is,” O’Rourke said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “He is an open avowed racist and encouraging more racism in this country.”

POLITICIANS RESPOND TO SHOOTING AT WALMART IN EL PASO

“This cannot be open for debate and you, as well as I, have a responsibility to call that out to make sure the American people know what is being done in their name,” O’Rourke added. “He doesn’t even pretend to respect our differences or understand we are all created equal. He is saying some people are inherently defected.”

A gunman on Saturday opened fire in an El Paso shopping area packed with as many as 3,000 people during the busy back-to-school season, leaving 20 dead and more than two dozen injured.

Authorities are investigating the possibility the Saturday shooting in El Paso was a hate crime, working to confirm whether an anti-immigrant screed posted online shortly beforehand was written by the man arrested in the attack on the 680,000-resident border city.

El Paso County records Sunday showed that the purported shooter, 21-year-old Patrick Wood Crusius, was booked on capital murder charges at the downtown jail in the Texas border city. There was no immediate indication that he had an attorney.

Police were investigating whether a document posted online shortly before the shooting was written by Crusius.

El Paso community quickly comes together to donate blood after mass shooting leaves 20 dead

The “outstanding” El Paso, Texas, community came together on Saturday to donate blood after a gunman opened fire at a Walmart store, killing at least 20 people and injuring another 26.

The local police department and the City of El Paso announced on Twitter that blood was “needed urgently” after victims were transported to nearby hospitals following the mass shooting.

Current 2020 Democratic presidential candidate and former Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke, who lives in El Paso, also tweeted out ways to donate the blood that was desperately needed.

Hundreds of people lined up outside two Vitalant blood donation stores to help the grieving community, according to local news outlets.

A reporter with KTSM tweeted a video of “hundreds” of people lined up outside one of the blood donation centers waiting to donate blood, while other Good Samaritans provided pizza, water and Gatorade to those in line.

“Easily 40+ cars in this line at the blood donation center, and more on foot walking in,” one Twitter user said, noting that hundreds were standing in a line wrapped around the building in 100-degree weather.

Someone tweeted that they tried to donate blood at one of the centers, but officials told people they couldn’t “accept any more donors today” and to make appointments online for another day.

El Paso Mayor Dee Margo told “Fox & Friends” on Sunday morning that the El Paso community is “outstanding” and “generous”

“They’re out giving blood, they’re visiting, they’re having vigils,” adding: “This is just not going to define us.”

Hours after the El Paso shooting took place, a gunman, wearing body armor, killed at least nine people and injured 26 others outside a bar in Dayton, Ohio. The suspect was fatally shot by responding officers.

Texas superintendent head-butted other superintendent at educators’ training, police say

The superintendent of a Texas school district has been briefly suspended after police claim he head-butted another superintendent while drunk at a fast-food restaurant.

Xavier De La Torre, superintendent of Ysleta Independent School District in El Paso, was suspended without pay for three days on July 30 after the alleged altercation at a Whataburger in June.

Following the July 30 meeting, school district trustees said De La Torre’s suspension was “an appropriate cause of action due to Dr. De La Torre not advising the board promptly about the incident in question,” according to the El Paso Times. Trustees didn’t acknowledge De La Torre’s alleged conduct in the incident.

A police report said De La Torre, in San Antonio with other educators for a training provided by the Texas Association of School Boards, appeared to be intoxicated and head-butted José Espinoza, superintendent for the Socorro Independent School District, which covers much of El Paso County.

De La Torre denied the incident last week, claiming he was not the aggressor and that he didn’t head-butt anyone. Espinoza, according to the Times, said the police report accurately stated what happened on June 13.

Iran seizes oil tanker carrying ‘smuggled fuel’ in Persian Gulf, state media reports

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard last week seized an oil tanker in the Persian Gulf that was supposedly carrying “smuggled fuel” from Iran, state media reported Sunday.

The ship was carrying 700,000 liters [185,000 gallons] of fuel, according to state TV and the semi-official Fars news agency. Seven crew members were reportedly detained during the vessel’s seizure.

IRAN’S FOREIGN MINISTER INVITED TO WHITE HOUSE, TEHRAN DECIDED AGAINST VISIT: REPORT

The ship was seized on Wednesday near Farsi Island, where an Iranian Guard Navy base is located, the news outlet reported. The island sits in the Persian Gulf between Saudi Arabia and Iran, north of the Strait of Hormuz.

“This foreign vessel had received the fuel from other ships and was transferring it to Persian Gulf Arab states,” Gen. Ramazan Zirahi, a Guard commander, was quoted as saying.

Further information on the vessel, and the nationality of crew members, was not immediately clear.

The seizure marked the third such incident involving a commercial vessel in recent weeks — and the second accused of smuggling fuel.

The U.S. Fifth Fleet, based in Bahrain, told The Associated Press it did not have information to confirm the reports. Maritime tracking experts also said they did not have any immediate information about the incident or the vessel.

On July 18, the paramilitary force seized a United Arab Emirates-based oil tanker, the Panamanian-flagged MT Riah, for allegedly smuggling some 264,000 gallons of fuel from Iranian smugglers to foreign customers.

The following week, the Guard’s naval forces seized a British-flagged vessel in the Gulf in what some Iranian officials suggested was retaliation for the seizure of an Iranian oil tanker in a British Royal Navy operation off Gibraltar. The U.K. says the Iranian oil tanker was suspected of violating European Union sanctions on oil shipments to Syria. Iran denies the ship was bound for Syria but has not disclosed its destination.

The seizure comes amid heightened tensions between the U.S. and Iran amid the breakdown of the nuclear deal that led the regime to exceed the threshold of low-enriched uranium stockpile as agreed upon in the 2015 accord.

Democrats denounce white nationalism after El Paso massacre

On Saturday, after news broke that a gunman opened fire on shoppers in El Paso, Texas, a number of 2020 Democratic presidential candidates denounced white nationalism and the epidemic of gun violence in America.

One by one, the candidates spoke to a gaggle of reporters covering the AFSCME Public Service Forum in Las Vegas about the shooting; issuing statements, plans and condolences for 20 killed and 26 injured.

A visibly upset Beto O’Rourke was one of the first to deliver a statement shortly after news broke that there was an active shooter at a Walmart in El Paso. He said he’d be canceling multiple days of campaign events in Nevada and California to return to his hometown to be with his family and former constituents.

EL PASO SHOOTING LEAVES 20 DEAD, 26 INJURED; INVESTIGATORS PROBING POTENTIAL ‘NEXUS TO HATE CRIME’

“We know that there’s a lot of injury, a lot of suffering in El Paso right now,” O’Rourke said. “I’m incredibly sad and it’s hard to think about this.”

Every candidate who spoke following the shooting addressed it, while several explicitly spoke out against white nationalism and few linked the shooting to the president.

Among those with the most candor was South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg, who named white nationalist violence as one of the greatest threats to the nation’s security. El Paso Police Chief Greg Allen said authorities were looking into the shooter’s motivations and said there may be a “nexus to a hate crime.”

“America is under attack by lethal, violent white nationalist terrorism,” Buttigieg said. “… This is a national security emergency. It is killing Americans just as it is killing people around the world.”

He said that until the nation is ready to confront the rash of racially motivated violence it has suffered — and implement reforms to gun laws — it will remain vulnerable to domestic terrorist attacks. The tragedy in El Paso was 250th mass shooting in America in 2019.

Buttigieg, when asked about why he was qualified to comment on white nationalism, cited his military record. According to documents obtained by ABC 57 in South Bend, the mayor was placed in the Afghanistan Threat Finance Cell (AFTC). The documents said the AFTC often “identifies and disrupts Taliban, Al-Qaida and other insurgent financial support networks in Afghanistan.”

“Counterterrorism was my specialty in the military, and I know a little bit about what’s involved,” Buttigieg said. “I specialized in dealing with terrorism abroad, but I learned a lot that, sadly, will be applicable here at home.”

“I specialized in dealing with terrorism abroad, but I learned a lot that, sadly, will be applicable here at home.”

— Pete Buttigieg

The mayor, who is polling around 6 percent, according to a RealClearPolitics’ average, also took a jab at Donald Trump, stopping just short of placing the onus of the massacre on his shoulders.

“The President of the United States is condoning white nationalism,” Buttigieg said. “White nationalism is one of the evils that is motivating and inspiring at least some people to go kill Americans. The president has a responsibility to nip this in the bud.”

He said the government needs to develop a national strategy to prioritize resources to deradicalizing and defending from white nationalist violence.

Trump took to Twitter to give statements on the shooting. In one tweet, he pledged the full support of the federal government to Gov. Greg Abbott. In another, he said “it was an act of cowardice” and he condemned the “hateful act.”

Washington state Gov. Jay Inslee similarly decried the act of violence and went further in accusing the president of being complicit by way of his divisive rhetoric and race relations.

“The first order of business to reduce white nationalism is to eliminate white nationalism in our White House,” Inslee said. “The sentiments of fear and division, and outright racism, that this president has emboldened out to be sickening to anyone.”

He went on to remark that fear and division are “Donald Trump’s stock-in-trade” and that the country deserved someone who work to heal its historically wounded relationship with race.

Leslie Marshall: Trump is wrong about plastic straws – They really do cause problems

I was appalled when I read that President Trump’s reelection campaign has raised several hundred thousand dollars selling plastic drinking straws, branded as an alternative to “liberal paper straws.”

The straw sales began after the president questioned why some communities are banning sales of plastic straws.

“I do think we have bigger problems than plastic straws,” Trump told reporters at the White House last month.” What about the plates, the wrappers and everything else that are much bigger and they’re made of the same material?”

Now before I start getting email telling me that “Trump straws” are recyclable and reusable, please understand this: They’re still plastic, and plastic eventually is thrown away.

I live in California, and when the push to eliminate plastic straws gathered steam, many of us (yes, even liberals) rolled our eyes. Aren’t there more important issues to address?

But then I learned why it’s essential to get rid of them. Banning plastic straws isn’t a lefty issue. It’s an environmental issue, an animal rights issue – even a human health issue.

Most plastic straws can’t be recycled and they don’t biodegrade like the paper variety. A single straw may not seem to pose much of a problem, but Americans currently discard a huge amount of straws every day. No one knows the exact number, but estimates range from 170 million to 500 million straws daily.

Don’t care much about the environment? How about wildlife? Sea creatures?

Environmental advocacy groups estimate that plastic in the oceans kills 1 million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals every year. Animals ingest straws and other plastic, causing them to choke or suffocate. Others starve because they’ve eaten too much plastic that they can’t digest.

Most of you have seen those sorrowful social media videos of dead whales found to have swallowed thousands of plastic straws. Our hearts cry out when we see adorable sea turtles with plastic stuck in their nostrils. Countless dolphins are suffering a similar fate.

Don’t care about sea life? Well, do you care about yourself?

Plastic straws slowly fragment into tiny pieces known as microplastics that find their way into the food chain. When you eat fish that have consumed the particles – which can include carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, sulfur, chlorine, fluorine, phosphorous and silicon –  your health can be at risk.

Are you comfortable eating silicon or chlorine, the essential ingredients of bleach? Are you comfortable with your children eating that?

A simple way to help reduce plastic pollution and the environmental damage it causes is to stop using plastic straws.

There are lots of alternatives to plastic when it comes to straws. Maybe that’s what Trump should be selling.
