Jesse Watters: Just like the Mueller report, everyone should read ‘typical liberalism’ in Green New Deal

Hosts of “The Five” debated the merits of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez‘s, D-N.Y., “Green New Deal” proposal on Tuesday and said a new study shows it could end up costing some American households $70,000 in just the first year.

Tackling the topic, co-host Jesse Watters described the proposal as “typical liberalism” — but then urged everyone to read the controversial plan.

“Like the Mueller report, I think everybody should read the Green New Deal,” he said, before sarcastically rattling through a few of the points included in the document.

“Everybody’s guaranteed access to nature. Everybody’s guaranteed free housing, a job, and if you don’t want to work, they guarantee your income. They’re going to get rid of all fossil fuels and the combustion engine.”

Co-host Katie Pavlich then took a slightly different approach, saying the proposal isn’t actually about the environment and is more about changing the country’s economic model to redistribute wealth.

“It’s not about the environment or being green at all,” Pavlich said. “[Ocasio-Cortez’s] chief of staff admitted that this is not about the environment. This is changing the economic structure of the United States to a socialist, Marxist model. So it’s not about the environment.”

Juan Williams then got in on the conversation, saying that the cost of the “GND” is one that is worth being considered.

“I think the cost of the inaction is pretty great,” Williams said.

North Carolina political operative faces new charges in ballot fraud investigation

North Carolina political operative at the center of a ballot fraud investigation over a disputed congressional election was hit with new charges on Tuesday.

Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman said in a statement that the operative, Leslie McCrae Dowless, has been indicted on charges of perjury, obstruction of justice, solicitation to commit perjury, conspiracy to obstruct justice and possession of absentee ballots related to the 2018 midterm election.

Dowless was already facing charges related to allegedly collecting absentee ballots during the 2018 primary and 2016 general elections. The state election board ordered a new election for the 9th Congressional District seat after conducting its own inquiry into the alleged harvesting scheme.

Prosecutors alleged Dowless’ activities benefited Republican nominee Mark Harris, who beat his Democratic opponent, Dan McCready, in the November midterm elections by more than 900 votes. Those results were eventually tossed out and a new election was ordered.

Harris declined to run again, citing health reasons. A special election to fill the seat is scheduled for Sept. 10, The Charlotte Observer reported.

The new indictment accuses Dowless of directing people to complete the incomplete ballots by instructing “individuals to sign certifications indicating they had witnessed the voter vote and properly executed the absentee ballot when they had not, and mailed or instructed others to mail the absentee ballot in such a manner to conceal the fact that the voter had not personally mailed it himself.”

Dowless’ defense attorney, Cynthia Singletary, could not be reached Tuesday evening. Several others also face new charges related to the alleged scheme.

In a statement, Elections Board Executive Director Karen Brinson-Bell said officials “will continue to be vigilant and pursue any individuals or organizations that attempt to undermine our elections.”

More indictments could follow, Freeman said at a news conference on Tuesday, according to the paper.

“This is a large investigation,” she said. “It involves multiple election cycles, multiple individuals alleged to be involved in this election fraud.”

McCready will face Republican Dan Bishop in the new election to represent the mostly rural district.

Gutfeld on Tuesday night’s debate

The race for the Democratic presidential nomination is like a freeway with a lot of bad drivers going somewhere terrible, and they’re in a hurry.

They all crowd into the far-left lane, thinking that’s the fastest way home. The problem is, that lane is now backed up, and engines are revving — going nowhere good.

MICHAEL GOODWIN: TRUMP-HATING DEMOCRATS WILL OBSESS OVER IMPEACHMENT AND RACE IN 2020

If only one or two candidates checked their side-view mirrors, saw that vacant middle lane, and hopped right in. They’d race right to the front.

That’s the thing about sanity. It’s attractive to the rest of us who have seen where that other lane goes.

Now that movement to the middle lane would make sense, except for the cops — that is, the media — who will ticket you for any infraction that might come with expressing any moderate views.

Racism, sexism, any “ism” — those are the labels the press flings with gleeful abandon.

No wonder the new Democratic Party now defends MS-13, Antifa and rodents. That’s where the far-left lane takes you.

It’s where you find all the sheep for now — in that lane, bleating away, mistaking the attention from the press for the desires of America.

Instead, it only represents the screechiest voices of the press and social media, who are now the loudest voices in the party.

The candidates are merely mirrors of the media, one heading the wrong way, the other cheering them on, never pausing to check the damage they leave behind — such as Baltimore, St. Louis, Los Angeles and Detroit.

It’s a slow commute, one you do with your doors locked.

North Korea fired ‘multiple’ projectiles off east coast, South Korea reports

North Korea fired multiple unidentified projectiles off its east coast Wednesday, South Korean military officials said, just days after the secretive regime fired two short-range missiles from the same region.

The latest projectiles were launched from the Hodo peninsula in South Hamgyong Province, according to the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff, as Yonhap News reported.

“We are aware of reports of a missile launch from North Korea and we will continue to monitor the situation,” a senior administration official told Fox News on Tuesday.

The projectiles traveled about 428 miles over the sea and both reached an altitude of 30 miles but did not present a risk to the United States or South Korea, South Korea’s Defense Ministry said.

NORTH KOREA LAUNCHED NEW TYPE OF SHORT-RANGE BALLISTIC MISSILE, OFFICIAL SAYS

The rogue nation last Thursday launched its first missiles since the historic denuclearization talks between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and President Trump in May, later qualifying the tests as a “solemn warning” to “South Korean military warmongers” who plan to hold joint military drills with the U.S.

Republicans don’t believe in a future for the United States and want to worsen the problems associated with the current political system, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., said on Tuesday.

“Their goal is to make sure that frankly, government as we know it is dismantled,” she told the radio station Hot 97 In New York. According to Ocasio-Cortez, Republicans aren’t after solutions; they want to deepen corruption as well as “eliminate Medicare and Social Security.”

“The way that they justify it is by having this argument that none of this is worth it. That’s like really the core of it. They don’t believe in a future. I mean, I just don’t think they believe in a future for the United States so they’re just like, ‘Let’s get ours,'” she said, according to a post from the radio station.

CUMMINGS SAYS THERE IS ‘NO DOUBT’ TRUMP IS RACIST FOLLOWING CONTROVERSY OVER TWEETS

During the interview, she also indicated the United States was to blame for destabilization in Central America and the resulting influx of migrants that tried entering through the southern border.

Her interview came as President Trump faced racism accusations over tweets about her and other Democratic lawmakers, including Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md.

Ocasio-Cortez argued that when Trump tweeted about progressive freshmen like her going back to their home countries, he “showed [his] hand.”

“This has never been about undocumented immigrants, it’s never been about this. They’ve always said that but to the point that you are now telling members of Congress to ‘go back to your country,’ you showed your hand … This has always been about race,” she said of Trump’s immigration policy.

She also suggested it was “hilarious” for Trump to accuse her of bashing America. “His whole campaign was like actually trashing the country … The whole slogan, ‘Make America Great Again,’ what does that suggest? It implies that our nation is not great. So, he ran saying America isn’t great. He ran on this nihilistic platform saying the president is trash, the country is trash,” she said.

Attacks on President Trump and his supporters encourage his base to do more, rather than shaming them into silence, according to Kayleigh McEnany.

The media is often a top culprit in those attacks, McEnany claimed Tuesday on “The Todd Starnes Show,” before explaining why it fires up the president’s core supporters.

“That puts a fire under our volunteer base like nothing else,” she said.

“The false caricatures of the president — as the media always does — ‘racist,’ ‘misogynist’ and all the things that they make up.”

The Trump campaign press secretary said the president is only going on the offensive because he sees the actions and ideology of some of his critics as detrimental to American society.

“Of course, these couldn’t be about a dangerous ideology — you have attacking of anti-Americanism, and anti-Semitism — it must be about race and gender because ‘the Squad’ all happens to be female and women of color,” she said.

“It’s ridiculous that they always try to attach these labels but our voters our volunteers they get motivated. They see the injustice they see the way he’s treated and all he’s accomplished all he’s accomplishing.”

Of Trump’s attacks on Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., and Baltimore City itself, McEnany claimed the controversy is another example of the president calling out what he sees as injustice.

“This president’s right, there are rodent-infested areas,” she said of some parts of Cummings’ 7th congressional district.

“It is inexcusable.”

She added some Trump critics previously made similar critiques of problematic sections of the Charm City but have not gotten the blowback the president has.

McEnany pointed to 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., recalling how he compared lifespans in the area to that of North Korea.

As federal government restores capital punishment, Pennsylvania pushes to end it

PHILADELPHIA — Vicki Schieber is a mother on a mission: her 23-year-old daughter, Shannon, was brutally murdered in her brownstone apartment by a serial rapist in 1998 while attending the University of Pennsylvania.

But she has spent the past two decades trying to keep her daughter’s killer alive.

Schieber, 75, has become a fierce advocate to abolish the death penalty. She said many told her she should push for her daughter’s killer to be executed — but she found that cruel and inhumane. So she embarked on a crusade to end capital punishment.

“We didn’t want to put him to death,” said Schieber, “It wasn’t going to help us heal.”

Instead, the Schieber’s, Vicki and Sylvester, 73, made a promise.

“We won’t rest until the death penalty is abolished in the state Shannon was born [Maryland], and that state she died [Pennsylvania].”

Pennsylvania recently became the latest state pushing to abolish the death penalty. New Hampshire abolished the death penalty this year, making it the 21st state to formally abandon capital punishment. In California, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania, the death penalty remains effectively frozen by a governor or court-issued moratorium.

But this puts these states at odd with the federal government. Just last week, the Trump administration announced plans to resume executing federal prisoners awaiting the death penalty — ending a 16-year moratorium on the practice. Many supporters said the move was necessary, citing that delays in carrying out death sentences are unfair to the relatives of victims.

Shannon Schieber was president of her 1992 high school graduating class. She finished Duke University in just three years with a triple major in philosophy, economics, and math. She was brilliant and compassionate, her mother said.

But when forced with the difficult decision to persue the death penalty in retaliation for her daughter’s murder, she declined. Maryland ended capital publishment in 2013 and she is now urging Pennsylvania to do the same.

Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner also vows to try to end the death penalty in the state.

Earlier this month, Krasner asked the Pennsylvania Supreme Court to declare the state’s death penalty system unconstitutional; citing a study conducted by his office that revealed 72 percent of Philadelphia death sentences were overturned during post-conviction review between 1978 and 2017, most due to ineffective legal representation.

ARKANSAS JUDGE ASKS COURT TO ALLOW HIM TO HEAR DEATH PENALTY-RELATED CASES AGAIN

His declaration against the death penalty comes after a bipartisan report released by Pennsylvania’s General Assembly Joint State Government Commission condemned the practice citing that the death penalty was applied unevenly across the commonwealth, affected by factors like race and county.

“It is a broken system,” said Marc Bookman, co-director of the Atlantic Center for Capital Representation. “You cannot say a system works when we have people serving any amount of time on death row, that are innocent, that in itself is an incredible injustice.”

Bookman, who worked in the homicide unit of the Defender Association of Philadelphia before beginning the non-profit, said he saw too many defendants sentenced to death row due to low resourced counsel.

“Quality of counsel and resources should not determine who receives death sentences and who does not,” said Bookman, “that’s just not what our founding fathers intended.”

However, the Pennsylvania District Attorney’s Association (PDAA) released a statement supporting the death penalty. The group said the practice not only meets constitutional standards by appropriately channeling the discretion of prosecutors and sentencing authorities but also is only executed when the facts of a case meet the narrowest requirements by law.

“If a crime is so hideous that it calls for the death penalty, it should be available,” said Francis Chardo, the district attorney of Dolphin County.

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO RESUME CAPITAL PUNISHMENT, SCHEDULE EXECUTIONS FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 2003

“The appeals process is a long one, we have safeguards put into place because this is a very severe, and irreversible penalty,” said Chardo, “but at some point, there has to be finality to the system.”

“All murders are not the same,” says Chardo. “[Capital punishment] it’s reserved for premeditated first-degree murder cases where there are aggravated circumstances that warrant such a decision.”

Supreme Court could decide

Krasner is requesting the high court to invoke its King’s Bench power to address systemic problems in the state’s death penalty and to “hold that the death penalty, as it has been applied, violates the Pennsylvania Constitution’s ban on cruel punishments.”

The Supreme Court will hear oral argument on the matter in September.

If the death penalty in Pennsylvania is struck down, Schieber says her days as an advocate could come to an end.

“I can finally go home,” said Schieber, “and tell my daughter we did it, we got rid of the death penalty in Pennsylvania.”

A Republican senator introduced a resolution Tuesday condemning what he called a “failed experiment at socialism.

Sen. Steve Daines R-Mont., who authored the resolution, told “Outnumbered Overtime” host Harris Faulkner that it all comes down to a pivotal choice.

“This is going to be a choice between freedom and socialism,” he said.

In February, President Trump emphasized the threat of socialism in his State of the Union address and committed to fighting it at all costs.

“We are born free, we will stay free, America will never be a socialist country,” the president said at the time.

Daines said he hopes to bring the resolution to the floor and anticipates full support from his Republican colleagues.

“I think every member of the U.S. Senate should be on record for this resolution,” he said.

UNION LEADERS WARN GREEN NEW DEAL MAY LEAD TO POVERTY

Heading into 2020, Daines said the president must paint a clear distinction between his path for the country, and that of the Democratic candidates — many of whom support socialism.

The resolution comes as a new Fox News poll showed 54 percent of voters thought the U.S. moving from capitalism toward socialism would be a “bad thing” — even as 53 percent of Democratic primary voters said it would be a “good” development. The growing divide is expected to play a significant role in the 2020 presidential election.

Freshman congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., has largely become the face of socialism within her party since she ran on a socialist platform last year for a seat in the House.

“AOC and the squad have now become the face and the voice of the Democrats… that ought to be chilling and concerning for Americans who love freedom, want to protect our nation’s sovereignty and believe in the direction that President Trump is taking our country,” Daines said.

The footage was shot on July 28th around 4:25 p.m., according to the Tweet. The video apparently comes from a webcam near the port of Nassau in the Bahamas. It’s unclear what’s causing the smoke, as the ship appears to be docked.

Passengers can be seen standing on the upper decks of a nearby Royal Caribbean boat.

The footage was uploaded by PTZtv, a Twitter account that shares scenic footage live-streamed from cameras in popular travel locations. They captioned this particular footage, “Carnival Victory, ‘no smoke without…?’ Hard to imagine anything good happening here.”

One person responded to the footage saying, “Love cruising, but scenes like this make me really feel guilty.”

Another user claimed to have seen this before, posting, “That definitely looks gnarly, but we were docked next to a Carnival ship in Nassau a few years ago, that had similar smoke coming out of its stack. Not quite as bad, but still gnarly.”

A federal judge in frank terms has dismissed a lawsuit by the Democratic National Committee (DNC) against key members of the Trump campaign over hacked DNC emails, saying they “did not participate in any wrongdoing in obtaining the materials in the first place” and therefore bore no legal liability for disseminating the information.

The DNC asserted in court filings that the Trump team’s meetings “with persons connected to the Russian government during the time that the Russian GRU agents were stealing the DNC’s information” was a sign that they were conspiring with the Russians to “steal and disseminate the DNC’s materials.”

However, Judge John Koeltl, a Bill Clinton appointee, wrote in his opinion Tuesday that the DNC’s argument was “entirely divorced” from the facts.

The suit also named the Russian government but Koeltl noted that federal law prohibited suits against foreign governments except in highly specific circumstances.

Koeltl denied the Trump team’s motion for sanctions but dismissed the suit with prejudice — meaning it had a substantive legal defect and could not be refiled. An appeal remained possible.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
