Kamala Harris says she supports plastic straw ban during CNN climate change marathon

Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., came out in favor of banning plastic straws on Wednesday during CNN’s climate change-focused town hall marathon.

When asked what she would do as president to curb the country’s reliance on “single-use plastics,” Harris pointed to the “images” of plastic bags and bottles that are found in the ocean and celebrated California’s ban of plastic bags.

“I think we have to create incentives,” Harris told CNN anchor Erin Burnett. “We have seen innovation take place when leaders lead.”

CNN’S CLIMATE CORRESPONDENT SAYS NETWORK’S 7-HOUR CLIMATE CHANGE TOWN HALL ISN’T ENOUGH

Burnett then mentioned how banning plastic straws are a “big thing” and asked her if people should ban them.

“I think we should, yes,” Harris responded. “Look, I’m going to be honest… It’s really difficult to drink out of a paper straw… so we kinda have to perfect that a little bit more.”

She added, “Innovation is a process, right? You don’t just do it. Innovation is a process, but you know, let’s encourage innovation. I think we can do a little bit better than these flimsy plastic straws but we do need to ban the plastic ones.”

The Second Amendment should be respected the same as all the other constitutional rights, according to Sen. John Kennedy.

While rights are not absolute, any piece of legislation limiting Second Amendment rights should have empirical evidence proving its projected worth and effectiveness, the Louisiana Republican claimed Wednesday on “The Story.

“Here is my starting point, Martha: I believe that love is the answer, but I also own a handgun just in case — in fact I own several. Shotguns too,” Kennedy told host Martha MacCallum. “That’s my right under our Bill of Rights. The Bill of Rights is not an a la carte menu. The Second Amendment is just as important as all the other Amendments.”

REPS. OCASIO-CORTEZ, CRENSHAW CLASH ON GUN CONTROL: ‘THIS IS AMERICA OUTSIDE NYC’

Responding to gun control proponents like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y. — who recently sparred on Twitter with Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, on the issue — Kennedy said gun laws must be proven effective.

More from Media

“Some of my colleagues argue that by further curtailing our Second Amendment rights, they can enhance public safety,” he said. “Fine, the burden of proof is on them. I’m willing to have that debate, but I want the bacon without the sizzle — no speculation, no false comfort, no pulling stuff out of your orifices.”

The Senate Judiciary Committee member said “causal, scientific evidence” that the particular gun law proposal will curb or prevent mass shootings is necessary in that regard.

CASTRO VOWS TO ‘MAXIMIZE EXECUTIVE AUTHORITY’ TO PASS GUN CONTROL IF ELECTED

“Our rights are not absolute,” he added. “Our rights can be curtailed in the interest of public safety. All I’m saying is… prove it.”

Crenshaw drew Ocasio-Cortez’s ire earlier Wednesday after posting criticism of universal background checks.

Linking to a news story about a young woman firing at attempted robbers, Crenshaw said the situation provided the reason for the Second Amendment’s existence.

“Side note: With universal background checks, I wouldn’t be able to let my friends borrow my handgun when they travel alone like this. We would make felons out of people just for defending themselves,” he added.

In response, Ocasio-Cortez claimed people Crenshaw might lend his guns to in that situation, “have likely abused their spouses.”

“Why are you ‘lending’ guns to people unsupervised who can’t pass a basic background check?” she asked. “… Why on earth would you do that?”

R. Kelly’s federal trial in child pornography case in Chicago set for April

R. Kelly’s federal trial in Chicago is scheduled to begin in April, a judge ruled Wednesday.

One day after he was released from solitary housing in the Windy City’s Metropolitan Correctional Center and into the general population at the lockup facility, a judge set an April 27, 2020 trial date for child pornography and obstruction charges against the embattled “I Believe I Can Fly” crooner, the U.S. Attorney’s office in Chicago confirmed to The Post.

R. KELLY MOVED TO GENERAL POPULATION WHILE AWAITING TRIAL AFTER ‘UNCONSTITUTIONAL’ SOLITARY CONFINEMENT

Kelly’s attorney, Steve Greenberg did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but The Associated Press reports that the attorney expressed doubts that Kelly’s defense team could be ready for trial by that point.

R. KELLY FAILS TO APPEAR FOR CHICAGO COURT DATE, PROSECUTORS ALLEGE HE ‘REFUSED TRANSPORT’

In Chicago, Kelly is accused of recording himself having sex with five different minor girls from 1998 to 2002, and paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to at least two of the minors to get them to return videotapes of Kelly having sex with them.

Kelly is also facing charges of racketeering, transporting women and girls for sex and sexual exploitation of children in Brooklyn federal court, aggravated sexual assault charges in Cook County, Illinois — which encompasses Chicago — and charges in Minneapolis that he groped a 17-year-old girl after he paid her to dance naked for him in a hotel room.

Starbucks barista accused of writing man’s name as ‘ISIS’ instead of Aziz

A Starbucks employee in Philadelphia allegedly wrote “ISIS” on a customer’s drinks instead of Aziz, the patron said last week.

Niquel Johnson, 40, said he gave his Islamic name, “Aziz,” to the barista when he paid for three drinks on Aug. 25, saying it was pronounced “ah-zeez,” The Washington Post reported Friday.

Johnson said he was wearing traditional Middle Eastern clothing at the time.

A friend later pointed out the word ISIS — shorthand for the Islamic State terrorist group — on his drink when they were at a bookstore, Johnson said.

“I was shocked and angry. I felt it was discrimination,” he told The Post.

STARBUCKS CUSTOMER CLAIMS BARISTA WROTE ‘HIPPO’ ON CUP INSTEAD OF HER NAME: ‘GROTESQUELY UNPROFESSIONAL’

Johnson said he used the name “countless” times at that Starbucks location. When the order was ready, the drink names were called instead of his name, he noted.

A district manager called him Thursday night and said Starbucks believed the issue had been resolved after speaking to a niece of his named Alora earlier in the week, but Johnson said he didn’t know anybody by that name.

Johnson also said he was considering legal action. “I feel like they’re not taking it seriously as it is,” he said.

In a statement provided to Fox News, a Starbucks spokesperson said, “After investigating, we don’t believe this was a case of discrimination or profiling. The customer approached and provided the name Aziz. The barista mistakenly spelled it incorrectly. We have connected with Mr. Johnson and apologized for this regrettable mistake.”

The Council on American-Islamic Relations’ (CAIR) Philadelphia chapter issued a statement Friday questioning whether the act was “an innocent mistake or a sick joke,” and calling Starbucks’ behavior “exceedingly deficient.”

“Mr. Aziz has the constitutional right and privilege to wear traditional Muslim garb in compliance with the dictates of his Islamic faith without harassment or fear of retribution, or further bigoted behavior,” Timothy Welbeck, a CAIR staff attorney, wrote in a letter to Starbucks.

Last April in Philadelphia, two black men were arrested for sitting at a different Starbucks location and not ordering anything. They were charged with trespassing and creating a disturbance, but the charges were dropped quickly. The incident sparked nationwide outrage and accusations of racial profiling.

Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson issued an apology and 8,000 stores were closed for an afternoon last May for “racial bias training.”

Longtime GOP Rep. James Sensenbrenner to retire from Congress after 40 years

Wisconsin GOP Rep. James Sensenbrenner announced Wednesday he will retire from Congress when his term expires in 2020, after 40 years in the House of Representatives.

Sensenbrenner, 76, is the second-most senior lawmaker in the legislative body.

“When I began my public service in 1968, I said I would know when it was time to step back. After careful consideration, I have determined at the completion of this term, my 21st term in Congress, it will be that time,” said Sensenbrenner in a statement. Sensenbrenner had joined the Wisconsin state legislature in 1968, and was elected to Congress 10 years later.

Sensenbrenner said he would rather leave Wisconsin’s solidly red 5th district on his own accord than wait for the 2020 redistricting. “Being able to do this on my timetable rather than after a redistricting in 2022 will allow me to go out on a high note … This is just me feeling the time would be coming in the next few years, and I think this is the best time for me personally, and for both the Republican Party and for me politically,” he told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

His announcement brought the total number of House Republicans set to retire up to 13. Four GOP senators also have said they won’t run for reelection in 2020, while only two Democrats in the House and one in the Senate are set to retire.

REPUBLICANS FACE WAVE OF HOUSE RETIREMENTS

More than two dozen Republicans retired ahead of the 2018 midterms, leading up to the “blue wave” that helped the Democrats retake the House.

As for a successor, Sensenbrenner said he planned to back the “the Republican ticket from top to bottom,” the Journal Sentinel reported.

Sensenbrenner currently sits on the House Judiciary Committee and the House Foreign Affairs Committee. He holds a very conservative voting record, but he has managed to work with liberal Democrats on issues such as civil liberties.

DE BLASIO SAYS HE MAY DROP OUT OF PRESIDENTIAL RACE IF HE DOESN’T MAKE OCTOBER DEBATE STAGE

Former House Speaker Paul Ryan spoke highly of Sensenbrenner in light of the news. “Jim has spent the last 50 years protecting our constitutional rights, ensuring the U.S. led the way in science and space, and fighting tirelessly for conservative principles. He is a statesman, a person of remarkable character, and his presence and wisdom will be sorely missed in Congress,” Ryan, also of Wisconsin, said in a statment.

The Bahamas health minister said Wednesday that the death toll for Hurricane Dorian has risen from seven to 20 and more deaths are expected as the storm clears the island archipelago and threatens to make landfall in the U.S. later this week.

The Category 5 hurricane slammed the Bahamas this past Sunday where it lingered for nearly two days leaving wreckage and disaster in its wake.

“We are in the midst of one of the greatest national crises in our country’s history,” Prime Minister Hubert Minnis said at a news conference on Tuesday.

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds donate $2M to help migrant children at border

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds are taking a stand against separating migrant children from their families at the U.S.-Mexico border.

The celebrity couple has pledged to donate $2 million to two different organizations focused on protecting the rights of migrant children: NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund (LDF) and the Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights.

“We’re blown away by the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, and the Young Center’s commitment to not only justice and democracy, but humanity,” said Lively and Reynolds in a statement. “Over the last few years, our perspective has grown and we’ve realized we have to do everything possible to foster more compassion and empathy in this world.”

“History’s being written right now. We’re grateful to give back to organizations who give voice to so many,” they added.

“LDF is thrilled to receive this generous gift from Blake and Ryan,” LDF president and director-counsel Sherrilyn Ifill said in a statement to ET. “We have been impressed by the strength of their commitment and support, and by their sincere and deep concern about the issues that lie at the core of LDF’s work. They are among an increasing circle of artists and everyday people who recognize that each of us must play a role in protecting and strengthening our democracy, and who understand that racial justice is central to the integrity of our nation. We extend our gratitude to Blake and Ryan and encourage others to follow their lead.”

“We are so deeply grateful for this extraordinary gift from Blake and Ryan,” said Maria Woltjen, executive director of the Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights.

“Their donation will help ensure that the most vulnerable immigrant children — who are in detention facing deportation — will have an advocate to protect their rights and their best interests. Children are escaping rampant violence and persecution to seek safe haven in the U.S. The Waymaker Fund for Immigrant Children, created with this gift, is needed now more than ever. We are so moved by Blake and Ryan’s kindness and their generosity.”

Reynolds, 42, has previously used his platform to bring awareness to families being separated at the border.

In July 2018, he teamed up with various other A-Listers to read a letter which was written by an asylum-seeking Honduran mother, identified only as Mirian, who was separated from her 18-month-old son in April.

Meanwhile, Lively, 32, was honored for her work fighting against child pornography at Variety’s Power of Women event in 2017.

“NUMBER 1– I apologized for liking that church sign. I said I regret it. I shud have thought before recklessly supporting,” she tweeted.

She said she supported that sign because of alleged racism on the part of Trump and the Republican Party. “You won’t accept this but black people are targeted by Trump’s GOP for voter suppression,” she said.

She added that “Charlottesville was about Trump supporters hating POC and Jews” — a reference to the protests in 2017 where white supremacists demonstrated in opposition to removing a statue of former Civil War General Robert E. Lee. James Fields plowed into protesters at a white supremacist rally, killing 32-year-old paralegal Heather Heyer and injuring more than 30 others.

ERIC MCCORMACK BACKTRACKS, SAYS HE DOESN’T SUPPORT ‘BLACKLISTS’ AFTER CALLING TO OUT TRUMP DONORS

Messing and “Will & Grace” co-star Eric McCormack ignited a media firestorm in recent days when they called for a media outlet to publish the names of people attending a fundraiser for President Trump.

Amid backlash, the two claimed they weren’t calling for a blacklist but rather wanted to bring attention to already-public information.

“I NEVER NOR WOULD I EVER call for a blacklist of anyone for any reason. The info is publicly available. I as a consumer want to know where MY … Money is going when I pay for entertainment. Just as you have the right to not watch W&G bc I don’t support Trump, I have the right to not go see (pay for) a movie with someone supporting babies in cages,” the actress said in two separate tweets on Wednesday.

Messing also cited the First Amendment, adding that “there is nothing threatening about asking politely for information.”

Her initial comments caught widespread attention — including a condemnation from “View” host Whoopi Goldberg — and a slight from the president himself.

“I have not forgotten that when it was announced that I was going to do The Apprentice, and when it then became a big hit, helping NBC’s failed lineup greatly, @DebraMessing came up to me at an Upfront & profusely thanked me, even calling me ‘Sir.’ How times have changed!” he tweeted on Saturday.

“Will & Grace” stars Eric McCormack and Debra Messing knew exactly what they were doing when they tweeted a call for a list of attendees at a scheduled Beverly Hills Trump fundraiser, according to Michael Loftus.

Fellow comedian Whoopi Goldberg’s condemnation of the duo was instrumental in getting them to back down, Loftus also suggested Wednesday on “The Five.”

“Thank goodness for Whoopi Goldberg — I completely agree with what she said,” Loftus said. “There’s no way Eric McCormack was misquoted. He said exactly what he thought: ‘Gimme a list of the people going so I know who I don’t want to work with.’ And Debra Messing was right there to back him up.”

The conservative writer and comic called the NBC sitcom stars’ messages “terrifying.”

Late last week, Messing asked via Twitter for a printed list of those attending a high-dollar fundraiser in the southern California city. McCormack echoed the solicitation, adding it would help him know who, “we don’t wanna work with.”

On “The View,” Goldberg — who is often a critic of President Trump — blasted the actors.

“We had something called a blacklist and a lot of really good people were accused of stuff,” she said. “Nobody cared whether it was true or not. They were accused. And they lost their right to work … In this country, people can vote for who they want to.”

On Wednesday, McCormack followed up with a statement claiming his original remarks were “misinterpreted in a very upsetting way.”

“I absolutely do not support blacklists or discrimination of any kind, as anyone who knows me would attest,” the Toronto-born actor said. “I’d simply like to understand where Trump’s major donations are coming from, which is a matter of public record.”

“I am holding myself responsible for making educated and informed that I can morally and ethically stand by and to do that, transparency is essential.”

Messing later tweeted McCormack’s social media post, agreeing with the sentiment.

On “The Five,” Loftus considered why Hollywood is home to so much anti-Trump and anti-Republican sentiment.

“Hollywood should be filled with Libertarians. It’s the most capitalistic, ‘follow the American dream’ [place],” he said.

He pointed to actor Jim Carrey, who has expressed anti-Trump sentiment through gruesome artwork depicting officials like former White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders.

“Jim Carrey is like halfway socialist now,” Loftus remarked, adding the Canadian-born actor began as a struggling comic who eventually made his way to Hollywood and starred in blockbusters like “Dumb & Dumber” with Jeff Daniels.

“To have these people turn their back on the American dream, it’s sad, but it is the reality.”

In the future, Loftus predicted, anti-Trump celebrities may take a cue from what happened to McCormack and Messing and keep their political expressions “more secretive.”
