House panel delays Kellyanne Conway contempt vote amid White House talks

The House Oversight Committee announced Wednesday that it had postponed a vote on whether to recommend that White House counselor Kellyanne Conway be held in contempt of Congress, as talks continued with the Trump administration.

“I am postponing the Committee’s vote as I work with the White House to try to reach an accommodation,” panel Chairman Elijah Cummings, D-Md., said in a statement. “Ms. Conway violated the law numerous times and must be held accountable.”

KELLYANNE CONWAY DEFIES HOUSE OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE SUBPOENA OVER ALLEGED HATCH ACT VIOLATIONS

The vote was supposed to take place Thursday and recommend that the House find Conway to be in contempt of Congress “for her refusal to comply with a subpoena duly issued” by the committee, The Washington Post reported.

The move stems from Conway’s failure to appear July 15 to testify after a government watchdog found that she violated the Hatch Act, a law banning federal government employees from engaging in certain political activities, despite the committee’s subpoena.

The Office of the Special Counsel, which is separate from the office with a similar name previously run by Robert Mueller, said in a scathing report in June that Conway violated the Hatch Act by “disparaging Democratic presidential candidates while speaking in her official capacity during television interviews and on social media,” and recommended she be fired.

KELLYANNE CONWAY SAYS CRITICS EMPLOY HATCH ACT TO ‘SILENCE’ HER SUPPORT FOR TRUMP

A White House attorney sent a letter to Cummings advising him that Conway won’t appear before the panel, prompting calls to hold her in contempt of Congress.

Conway told Fox News that she was “taking one for the team” and insisted that as a presidential adviser she shouldn’t be forced to testify.

“I’d be happy to testify. I have nothing to hide. I’ve done nothing wrong,” Conway added. “I would love to go testify, but I’m taking one for the team here because there’s a longstanding tradition to claim immunity and not have people like me testify.”

Trump declares victory after Mueller hearings, predicts 2020 backlash for Democrats

Good morning and welcome to Fox News First. Here’s what you need to know as you start your Thursday…

Trump takes victory lap after Mueller hearings: ‘The Democrats lost big today’
Just as he did with the findings of his report, former Special Counsel Robert Mueller did not give Democrats what they wanted with his much-anticipated testimonies before two House committees on Wednesday. According to critics such as former Rep. Trey Gowdy, now a Fox News contributor, those who were seeking new ammunition for an impeachment push against President Trump were very disappointed.

Mueller sometimes appeared flustered as he strictly stuck to the boundaries of his previously released report on Russia’s interference in the 2016 election. Even a pro-impeachment Democrat like Rep. Al Green of Texas admitted there were no “wow” moments from Mueller’s nearly eight hours of testimony on Wednesday. Some analysts and hosts on CNN , ABC News and NBC conceded the hearings were disastrous for Democrats. Even liberal gadfly Michael Moore admitted defeat – with President Trump taking notice. (Moore had reluctantly predicted Trump’s victory in 2016.) Click here for Fox News Digital’s five big takeaways from the Mueller hearings.

President Trump took a victory lap after Mueller’s testimony concluded, saying it was a “devastating day for the Democrats.” (Watch his comments in the video above.) The president also predicted Democrats will suffer the consequences of their impeachment quest in next year’s elections. “I think they’re gonna lose the 2020 elections, including congressional seats because of the path they chose.” House Democrats hit back at Trump, saying that Mueller’s “powerful” testimony was about accountability. House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., said his panel will file lawsuits this week to obtain more information about Mueller’s report and to enforce a subpoena against former White House counsel Donald McGahn.

Federal court blocks Trump asylum rules after judge rules to keep them in place
A federal judge in California on Wednesday blocked the Trump administration from imposing restrictions on individuals seeking asylum in the United States, just hours after a judge in Washington had decided to let the rule stand while lawsuits play out in court. The rule, published in the Federal Register last week, required people seeking asylum to apply first in one of the countries they cross on their way to the U.S. — with certain exceptions. It targeted tens of thousands of Central Americans who have crossed Mexico each month trying to enter the U.S. The rule was met quickly with a legal challenge from advocacy groups, who moved for a temporary restraining order blocking the rule.

Puerto Rico’s governor agrees to step down after protests
Ricardo Rosselló, the embattled governor of Puerto Rico, announced Wednesday that he will leave office Aug. 2, after more than a week of massive protests calling for his ouster over leaked obscene, misogynistic online chats. Rosselló took to Facebook  to announce that his resignation will take effect at 5 p.m. next Friday. Puerto Rico’s Department of Justice confirmed to Fox News on Tuesday that search warrants had been issued in an investigation into the governor and 11 of his aides over whether they committed any crimes related to offensive, obscenity-laden online chats that were released.

Jeffrey Epstein, the politically connected financier facing multiple charges of sex trafficking, was found unconscious in his New York City jail cell with injuries to his neck in a possible suicide attempt, according to multiple reports. Epstein was found by guards sprawled out on the floor at the Metropolitan Correctional Center and taken to a nearby hospital. It’s unclear how he suffered his neck injuries. Investigators believe Epstein may have done it to himself either on purpose or as a ploy to get transferred out of the jail, sources told the New York Post.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell raising his right hand and swearing to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth?

It could happen, a report said, after an appellate court in Louisiana on Wednesday upheld a district judge’s decision to let a lawsuit filed by disgruntled fans of the New Orleans Saints to proceed.

The case stems from the widely disputed NFC Championship Game last Jan. 20, in which a referee’s non-call of what appeared to be a pass-interference penalty allowed the Los Angeles Rams to ultimately defeat the Saints and advance to the Super Bowl.

‘JEOPARDY!’ CHAMP JAMES HOLZHAUER PREDICTS NEXT YEAR’S SUPER BOWL TEAMS

As might be expected, Saints fans were furious. Many wanted the cost of their tickets to be refunded, while others wanted the game to be replayed.

Saints fan Tony LeMon and others decided to sue the NFL – and the district judge’s July 18 decision, which was upheld Wednesday, could lead to Goodell and the game’s referees having to appear for sworn depositions in the case, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported.

After the league lost its appeal Wednesday, it could ask the Louisiana Supreme Court to stop the lawsuit, according to the report.

At stake for the league is only $75,000, the maximum penalty allowed in a Louisiana state court. (The NFL’s revenue last season: an estimated $15 billion.)

But LeMon told the Times-Picayune that he and his fellow plaintiffs contend that their lawsuit is not about money.

“This is about getting to the truth,” he said, “and accountability for what happened.”

US warship crosses through Taiwan Strait after China says U.S. using ‘power politics’

The U.S. Navy reportedly sailed a warship through the Taiwan Strait Wednesday just a day after Beijing said the United States is undermining global stability through “power politics.”

China said it would take all necessary military measures to defeat “separatists” in Taiwan.

The U.S. Navy identified the warship as the Antietam, according to Reuters.

“The transit through the Taiwan Strait demonstrates the U.S. commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific,” Commander Clay Doss, a spokesman for the U.S. Navy’s Seventh Fleet, said in a statement. “The U.S. Navy will continue to fly, sail and operate anywhere international law allows.”

The U.S. and China are already embroiled in a tense trade war as Taiwan and other Pacific allies grow concerned about China’s growing military threat.

Earlier this month, the U.S. tentatively approved the sale of $2.2 billion in arms to Taiwan – a proposal that had prompted China to threaten sanctions against the U.S.

Crowds light fireworks, flood streets after Puerto Rico governor resigns; pols and celebs congratulate islanders

Crowds in San Juan set off fireworks and flooded the streets, cheering and waving Puerto Rican flags Wednesday, moments after learning that Gov. Ricardo Rosselló had announced plans to leave office.

Public figures, including 2020 Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders and Puerto Rican-American playwright Lin-Manuel Miranda, shared video of the mass celebrations that ensued after Rosselló announced via the official Fortaleza de PR Facebook page that he would resign, effective Friday, Aug. 2 at 5 p.m.

PUERTO RICO’S GOVERNOR TO RESIGN AMID PROTESTS OVER LEAKED OBSCENE ONLINE CHATS

Crowds already gathered in the streets of San Juan erupted in cheers, waved flags and began chanting a celebratory “Olé” upon hearing the news. Fox News correspondent Bryan Llenas shared video shot moments after Puerto Ricans heard Rosselló’s resignation announcement on their cell phones.

“Fireworks. Cheers. Hugs. Pots banging. Old San Juan erupts in celebration after @ricardorossello resigns on eve of Puerto Rico’s constitution day. @foxnews is here.” Llenas wrote.

A video tweeted by Nick Brown, a Reuters journalist, shows balcony shots of a euphoric crowd in the street while fireworks burst in the sky over San Juan in the background.

“BREAKING: It is official. @ricardorossello will resign effective August 2. Protesters light fireworks, erupt in euphoric cheer. Here is the moment they find out their cries, fraught as they are, have been heard. That Ricky has resigned. #rickyrenuncia #PuertoRico” Brown wrote.

Lin-Manuel Miranda, the Puerto Rican-American playwright famous for creating and starring in the Broadway hit “Hamilton,” retweeted Brown’s video. “Look at the fireworks,” he wrote.

Vermont Democrat Bernie Sanders also retweeted Brown’s video and wrote:  “I congratulate the millions of people in Puerto Rico who came together to demand the resignation of Governor Rosselló. When we stand together, there is nothing we cannot accomplish.”

The governor’s resignation announcement came after more than a week of massive protests calling for his ouster over leaked obscene, misogynistic online chats. The leaked conversations reportedly showed the governor mocking women, homosexuals, political opponents and victims of Hurricane Maria.

A Navy SEAL platoon from San Diego, Calif., is being ordered back to the U.S. from Iraq because of a “deterioration of good order and discipline,” the U.S. Special Operations Command said in a statement Wednesday.

“The Commander lost confidence in the team’s ability to accomplish the mission,” the statement said.

The statement did not describe the exact nature of the misconduct, but the Washington Post said two defense officials told the newspaper that the SEALs involved in the incident had violated a general order against use of alcohol.

NAVY IMPROVES HELICOPTER-FIRED LASER WEAPONS TO COUNTER MINES

The platoon is part of SEAL Team 7, the group whose members included Chief Eddie Gallagher, who was acquitted of war crimes charges earlier this month, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

Testimony during Gallagher’s court-martial revealed that members of SEAL Team 7’s Alpha Platoon routinely consumed alcohol during their free time in 2017, the Union-Tribune reported.

But Cmdr. Tamara Lawrence, a spokeswoman for the Naval Special Warfare Command, would not confirm whether the current case was related to alcohol consumption, the paper said.

The SEALs have faced increased scrutiny in recent months: Gallagher was convicted of posing with a dead ISIS fighter and his platoon commander faces a court-martial in September related to the Gallagher case, the newspaper reported.

Earlier this week, the Navy Times reported that six members of a Virginia-based SEAL team tested positive for cocaine use last year.

A Massachusetts mom ran after a man who she said exposed himself twice to her while she was out jogging Thursday morning and held him down while she tried to call 9-1-1, police said.

The 35-year-old single mom identified by her first name, Aia, said she was listening to an audiobook while running down Memorial Drive in Cambridge at about 7 a.m. when a man jogging toward her exposed himself twice and tried to reach out to touch her as he passed, police said.

The woman, a former member of the Israeli military, gave chase and held onto him as she called to passerbys and fellow joggers to call 9-1-1. The man managed to slip away.

“He picked the wrong victim,” she told the Patch. “All I want is for women to stand up for themselves and for passersby to get involved.”

Massachusetts State Police released the video.

Police said they recommend people first call 9-1-1 instead of apprehending an attacker but agreed this was a unique circumstance.

“She reacted in the blink of an eye what she felt was the best form of action. Good for her. I think she put the fear of god in the guy,” State Police Trooper James DeAngelis told The Patch.
