Africa locust plague worst infestation in decades: ‘Even cows are wondering what is happening’

Hundreds of millions of locusts have swarmed Kenya in the worst infestation to hit the East African nation in 70 years, devouring vital farmland in a region already suffering from extreme hunger.

The plague of desert locusts swarmed into Kenya from neighboring Ethiopia and Somalia, where an outbreak on this level has not been seen in a quarter century.

‘BIBLICAL’ SWARM OF LOCUSTS PLAGUE ITALIAN FARMLANDS IN WORST INFESTATION SINCE WWII

“Even cows are wondering what is happening,” said Ndunda Makanga, who spent hours Friday trying to chase the locusts from his farm. “Corn, sorghum, cowpeas, they have eaten everything.”

Kenyan media showed farmers clanging pots and pans as police shot bullets and tear gas at a swarm of insects to try to scare the voracious insects away from their crops, according to Reuters.

The locusts have overrun about 172,973 acres (70,000 hectares) of land in Kenya, devouring crops and destroying farmland as citizens face high levels of food insecurity. One swarm in the northeast measured 37 miles long by 25 miles wide (60 kilometers by 40 kilometers).

A single swarm can contain up to 150 million locusts per square kilometer of farmland, an area the size of almost 250 football fields, regional authorities said. A small swarm can consume enough food for 35,000 people in a single day, said Jens Laerke of the U.N. humanitarian office in Geneva.

In Ethiopia, farmer Ahmed Ibrahim swung empty water jugs at a swarm feasting on his crop of khat, a mildly narcotic leaf, and described his plight to Reuters.

“We have nothing else to sell at the market. How will I feed my eight children?” he asked.

A changing climate has contributed to “exceptional” breeding conditions, said Nairobi-based climate scientist Abubakr Salih Babiker.

The insects are now heading toward Uganda, where such an outbreak has not happened since the 1960s, and South Sudan, where almost half the country faces hunger as it emerges from civil war.

New species of meat-eating dinosaur discovered in Utah

Paleontologists have announced the discovery of a new species of meat-eating dinosaur in Utah.

The first specimen of the dinosaur, recently named Allosaurus jimmadseni, was uncovered in Dinosaur National Monument in northeastern Utah in the early 1990s, according to the University of Utah. The dinosaur, which roamed western North America 157 million to 152 million years ago, is the oldest species of Allosaurus, experts say.

Allosaurus jimmadseni was 26 to 29 feet long and weighed up to 400 pounds. Allosaurus means “different reptile” and jimmadseni honors Utah State Paleontologist James H. Madsen Jr.

The discovery was announced Jan. 24 in the scientific journal PeerJ.

“Previously, paleontologists thought there was only one species of Allosaurus in Jurassic North America, but this study shows there were two species — the newly described Allosaurus jimmadseni evolved at least 5 million years earlier than its younger cousin, Allosaurus fragilis,” said study co-lead author Mark Loewen, research associate at the Natural History Museum of Utah and associate professor in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at the University of Utah, in a statement. “The skull of Allosaurus jimmadseni is more lightly built than its later relative Allosaurus fragilis, suggesting a different feeding behavior between the two.”

Utah continues to offer fresh glimpses into its prehistoric past. In a separate project, for example, researchers unearthed a new species of ankylosaur, or armored dinosaur, in the Beehive State.

THE DAY THE DINOSAURS DIED: ASTEROID IMPACT SITE REVEALS DEVASTATION FROM POWER OF 10 BILLION A-BOMBS

Last year scientists also unveiled stunning research that sheds light on the 24 hours that followed the asteroid impact that wiped out the dinosaurs.

The asteroid strike 66 million years ago has been compared to the power of 10 billion atomic bombs.

An international team of scientists led by the University of Texas at Austin examined hundreds of feet of rocks that filled the Chicxulub impact crater within the first 24 hours after impact. The Chicxulub crater is located offshore from Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.

Venice may put glass wall around St. Mark’s Basilica to curb future flood damage

Officials in the city of Venice have proposed a plan to build a meter-high glass wall around St. Mark’s Basilica to prevent future flooding from damaging the 11th century building and the crypt beneath it.

The historic basilica, which sits at one of the lowest points of the city, is still suffering the effects of record flooding in November 2019, when the waters entered the crypt, damaged mosaics and exposed the artwork and the building itself to saltwater corrosion.

“Venice is on its knees,” Mayor Luigi Brugnaro said on Twitter at the time. “St. Mark’s Basilica has sustained serious damage like the entire city and its islands.”

Officials with the basilica now say they believe a glass wall would stop future floodwaters from reaching the basilica — and stop history from repeating itself.

“The barrier is essential and feasible and we aim to get in place by November, when we fear that high water will return,” said Pierpaolo Campostrini, a basilica official, according to The Times of London.

As proposed, the glass partitions would stand at just over a meter, and extend for about 150 meters around the perimeter, at a distance of about two meters away from the basilica itself. Much of the glass wall would also replace iron railings that are already in place to keep tourists from getting too close to the façade, Campostrini told Rome’s La Repubblica.

Campostrini added that engineers with the Stazione Sperimentale del Vetro (Experimental Station for Glass) have already consulted on the type of glass needed to withstand flooding.

The project is expected to cost around 3.5 million euro, or $3.84 million.

“The project is detailed and convincing for us, and we look forward to hearing the opinion of the institutions now, to discuss and perhaps make the suggested changes,” Campostrini said, per La Repubblica.

In 2021, the city also hopes to finally implement its Mose project, a large-scale system for preventing the flooding of the city via large barriers that would protect off the Venetian Lagoon from tidal surges like the one seen in November.

Campostrini said, however, that the glass walls would still be necessary, as Venetian officials would only activate the Mose barriers when the flooding reaches a height of 110 centimeters — or 25 centimeters higher than the level at which the crypt begins flooding.

The proposal is currently awaiting approval from the city’s cultural affairs office.

Back in November, the Piazza San Marco, directly adjacent to the basilica, was submerged in more than three feet of water. The adjacent Saint Mark’s Basilica was flooded for the sixth time in 1,200 years — but the fourth in the last 20, according to Reuters.

That month the tourist mecca was inundated by the second-highest levels of flooding ever recorded, following a flood in 1966.

Africa investigating first possible coronavirus case in Ivory Coast student: officials

Officials in at least one African country are monitoring what may be the continent’s first case of the novel coronavirus linked to a live animal and seafood market in the Chinese city of Wuhan. Current estimates say that at least 81 people have died of the virus while thousands of others have been sickened worldwide.

The student, a 34-year-old woman who was not identified, returned to the Ivory Coast on Saturday from Beijing. She experienced flu-like symptoms – she was reportedly coughing, sneezing and had trouble breathing – before boarding her flight to Abidjan, the BBC, citing the country’s health officials, reported.

WUHAN CORONAVIRUS CRITICISM PROMPTS MAYOR TO OFFER RESIGNATION AS ‘A FORM OF APOLOGY’

“Her general state is satisfactory. There are, at this stage, suspicions of a case of pneumonia tied to the coronavirus,” Ivory Coast’s Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene said in a statement, according to the BBC.

Officials are now awaiting the woman’s test results, which are expected on Sunday, the outlet reported. In the meantime, the student remains isolated. It’s not clear if she had been to Wuhan.

The outbreak has prompted several countries – including some African countries, namely Nigeria – to implement more rigorous health screenings at airports. But China’s health minister said over the weekend that he believes virus can spread during the incubation period, sparking fears that it can be more easily passed on than previously thought.

National Health Minister Ma Xiaowei made the comments at a press briefing on Sunday and said that information on the virus was limited, making many risks unclear. The incubation period for the novel coronavirus, identified by health officials as 2019-nCoV, can range from one to 14 days, during which it is infectious, he said. While the virus was first linked to a large seafood and animal market in Wuhan, officials have since determined that it’s transmissible between humans.

Ma said the country was entering a “crucial” stage in the response efforts as “it seems like the ability of the virus to spread is getting stronger.”

Deroy Murdock: Trump Senate trial — Democrat impeachment managers voted AGAINST military aid to Ukraine

Westlake Legal Group 694940094001_6115579363001_6115577930001-vs Deroy Murdock: Trump Senate trial -- Democrat impeachment managers voted AGAINST military aid to Ukraine fox-news/world/conflicts/ukraine fox-news/politics/trump-impeachment-inquiry fox-news/politics/house-of-representatives/democrats fox-news/politics fox-news/opinion fox news fnc/opinion fnc Deroy Murdock article 7d0a972d-e910-59b2-83a8-6d155294f9d7

Democrat House impeachment managers have focused not just on what they call corruption by President Donald J. Trump. They claim further that his 55-day hold on aid to Ukraine jeopardized U.S. national security.

  • If the president cared about national security, he would not have blocked military assistance to a vulnerable strategic ally in the attempt to secure personal political favor for himself,” said Representative Jerrold Nadler of New York, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. “We will show that he betrayed vital national interests, specifically our national security, by withholding diplomatic support and military aid from Ukraine.”
  • President Trump’s conduct “was inconsistent with and diverged from American national security and American values,” according to Representative Zoe Lofgren of California. “Those within the U.S. government responsible for America’s security and for shaping and implementing U.S. foreign policy were caught off guard by the president’s decision. Support for the aid and against the hold was unanimous, forceful, and unwavering.”
  • “Ukraine remains at war with Russia,” Representative Hakeem Jeffries of New York wept. “It desperately needs our support.”

So, given how pivotal these Democrats say Ukraine is to America’s national security — a virtual lynchpin of this republic’s survival — surely these members of Congress did everything within their power to speed military aid to Ukraine.

ANDREW MCCARTHY: BOLTON BLOWS UP TRUMP TEAM’S FOOLHARDY QUID PRO QUO DEFENSE

Not so fast, Jerrold, Zoe, and Hakeem!

In fact, Nadler, Lofgren, and Jeffries are working tirelessly to dislodge President Trump for delaying aid to Ukraine when they themselves voted to stop such relief, dead in its tracks.

On July 26, 2018, all three voted against the Fiscal Year 2019 National Defense Authorization Act, which included $250 million in security assistance to Ukraine. Despite Lofgren’s assertions to the contrary, such funds turned out not to be “unanimous, forceful, and unwavering,” with Lofgren herself among those undermining the very same unanimity that she ballyhoos.

In its time of need, these three impeachment managers told Ukraine to go to Hell. The vote was a lopsided 359-54, with Nadler, Lofgren, and Jeffries among the minority who just said no to this bill and its aid to Ukraine.

More from Opinion

Even worse, Nadler opposed $300 million in aid to Ukraine when he voted against the Fiscal Year 2020 National Defense Authorization Act. Astonishingly, Nadler’s vote was on December 11, 2019, two days after he chaired a Judiciary Committee impeachment hearing and exactly one week before he was the House floor manager for the December 17 debate and December 18 votes on articles of impeachment.

While 40 other Democrats rejected the NDAA, which contained the aid to Ukraine, 188 Democrats endorsed this bill. If Ukraine is a necessary condition for America’s national security — so much so that President Trump’s hold on this aid triggered Nadler to co-direct the effort to pry him from office — why didn’t Nadler join 188 of his Democrat colleagues and vote Yea? The bill passed overwhelmingly, 377-48. Yet Nadler found himself on the losing side of this measure, huddled among those who turned their thumbs down on Ukraine.

All told, Nadler resisted $550 million in sorely needed military assistance to Kiev. This races past hypocrisy. Rather, it’s shocking, outrageous, and disgusting.

Finally, while these three impeachment managers spurned this relief, President Trump on September 11 released to Ukraine the $391 million at issue, after a 55-day interval to confirm that newly elected President Volodymyr Zelensky would keep his anti-corruption promises, rather than re-direct these U.S. taxpayer funds, say, to a numbered account in the Grand Caymans. The backing that President Trump transmitted, 19 days before the September 30 legal deadline, included Javelin missiles — perfect for the high-speed recycling of Russian tanks into white-hot scrap metal.

The seven people who died alongside NBA great Kobe Bryant and his teenage daughter Gianna in a helicopter crash in California over the weekend are being remembered Monday for the differences they made in their communities.

KOBE BRYANT EXPECTED TO JOIN STAR-STUDDED BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME CLASS AFTER TRAGIC DEATH, CHAIRMAN SAYS

As officials are investigating what led the Sikorsky S-76 helicopter to plunge from the sky in Calabasas, about 30 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles, tributes are pouring in for the victims, who include baseball and basketball coaches, mothers and daughters and a pilot well-respected in the aviation community.

The seven others who died Sunday in the crash have been identified.

Gianna Bryant, Alyssa Altobelli and Payton Chester were all teammates. Christina Mauser was their basketball coach at Mamba Sports Academy in Thousand Oaks, Calif.

Payton’s mother, Sarah Chester, and Alyssa’s parents, John and Keri Altobelli, were also killed. John was a longtime baseball coach at Orange Coast College, who at one point in his career coached New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge.

Ara Zobayan was the pilot.

John, Keri and Alyssa Altobelli

John Altobelli – a longtime baseball coach at Orange Coast College – his wife Keri and youngest daughter Alyssa were three of the victims onboard the helicopter, the school says.

The couple has two surviving children, “JJ,” who is in his late 20s, and Lexi, who is a minor, said John’s nephew, Bo Altobelli, who is also a baseball coach at Midland College in Texas, to Fox News.

John Altobelli is credited with helping lead the Orange Coast College Pirates to the 2019 state championship and was recognized last August as one of the national coaches of the year by the American Baseball Coaches Association. He coached New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge in 2012 during a stint leading the Brewster Whitecaps of Massachusetts’ Cape Cod Baseball League.  He also coached the New York Mets’ Jeff McNeil.

“It’s hard to put into words what this loss means to the college and the athletics department,” Jason Kehler, the athletics director at Orange Coast College – a public community college in Costa Mesa — said in a statement. “John was a tremendous coach and an even better friend. Beyond that, he was an amazing mentor to all of the students and athletes that he taught and coached. He treated them all like family and his impact will live on forever.”

The school says Altobelli was gearing up to start his 28th season as its baseball team’s manager.

Jason Kehler, the Orange Coast College athletic director, told Fox News that about 200 people gathered at the baseball field Sunday to honor the late coach. He said the crowd included former players, coaches from other schools, families and colleagues. The school’s baseball team will play their scheduled game Tuesday, which is to include a tribute to Altobelli, Kehler said.

“John was an amazing coach and a great friend,” Kehler told Fox News. “What stood out to me was the care he had for his students, to become a better player and a better person. He treated all players like family.”

The team’s assistant coach, Ron La Ruffa, was quoted as telling CNN that Alyssa Altobelli was a teammate of Gianna Bryant’s at the Mamba Sports Academy in Thousand Oaks, which Kobe helped launch in 2018.

Christina Mauser

Christian Mauser was an assistant basketball coach at Mamba Sports Academy. Her husband, Matt Mauser, announced his wife’s death on Facebook.

“My kids and I are devastated. We lost our beautiful wife and mom today in a helicopter crash. Please respect our privacy. Thank you for all the well wishes they mean so much,” he wrote.

Matt and Christina Mauser have three children aged 11, 9 and 3. They were both teachers and basketball coaches at a small private school. Matt Mauser told The Today Show Bryant personally selected his wife to join the coaching staff at Mamba Sports Academy when he noticed her talents.

“I’m scared more than anything. I’m a little scared about the future,” he told The Today Show in a phone interview. “I’ve got three small kids and I’m trying to figure out how to navigate life with three kids and no mom.

“She was extraordinary. She was warm. She was incredibly bright,” he said. The husband said he knew all of the victims in the helicopter crash, adding “It was a family. They all really cared for each other.”

“They were amazing people … They were wonderful, they were warm. They loved their kids and they were so proud that their kids were growing,” he added.

He also spoke of Kobe Bryant’s decision to bring his wife on as a basketball coach.

“He saw what an amazing mind she had for basketball and he brought her on,” Mauser said, adding Bryant wanted her to teach the girls defense.

“Kobe didn’t really understand the zone defense because he never played at high school or college,” he said laughing. “They called her the Mother of Defense — M.O.D.”

Mother and daughter, Sarah and Payton Chester

Sarah Chester and her 13-year-old daughter Payton both were killed in the crash Sunday. Sarah is survived by her husband Chris and her two 16-year-old sons, Hayden and Riley, who both attend St. Margaret’s Episcopal School in San Juan Capistrano, The Orange County Register reported.

Todd Schmidt, a family friend, and the principal at Harbor View Elementary School in Newport Beach, where Payton was a student, wrote a tribute to the mother and daughter on Facebook.

“As folks mourn the loss of Kobe Bryant, I want to take a moment to remember two gorgeous human beings who were with him, Sarah and Payton Chester.

“As a principal, we work with some amazing families…the Chesters were one of those…engaged, supportive, encouraging, and full of mischief and laughter…and they had the best kiddos! This family made such a huge impact at Harbor View…they were genuine, kind-hearted, and caring…to the staff, to other families…and yes, especially to me.

“While the world mourns the loss of a dynamic athlete and humanitarian, I mourn the loss of two people just as important…their impact was just as meaningful, their loss will be just as keenly felt, and our hearts are just as broken. You were both the embodiment of #hvepride, and the world is just a little less without you both in it. May you both Rest In Peace and know the deep impact you had on our lives. You will be so sorely missed.”

Ara Zobayan

Ara Zobayan was a licensed pilot who “taught aspiring heli pilots to fly and was very much loved in the aviation community,” Los Angeles’ KTLA reporter Christina Pascucci, who is also a licensed pilot, said on Twitter. “They wrote ‘rest easy as you take your final flight to heaven,'” she said.

Pascucci said that, according to records, Zobayan was “instrument-rated,” which means he was rated to fly in fog and clouds. Los Angeles Police Department spokesman Josh Rubenstein told the Los Angeles Times that “weather conditions did not meet our minimum standards for flying.” Dense fog covered the area and continued to hang low on the Santa Monica mountain range hours after the crash.

Soap opera actor Lorenzo Lamas, who was also a pilot, posted a tribute to his friend on Twitter Monday.

“Ara Zobayan was a friend. He was a meticulous pilot, mentor and was always the guy who asked if you needed help. Whether it was planning a route or tying down an aircraft, he always made himself available. His aviation and helicopter knowledge was formidable and whenever I had a question regarding them, he’s the guy I would go to.

Chris Wallace: Bombshell claim by John Bolton has Trump defenders ‘spinning like crazy’

Westlake Legal Group wallace-trump-bolton Chris Wallace: Bombshell claim by John Bolton has Trump defenders 'spinning like crazy' fox-news/politics/trump-impeachment-inquiry fox-news/politics/senate/republicans fox-news/politics/elections/senate fox-news/person/donald-trump fox-news/media/fox-news-flash fox news fnc/media fnc David Montanaro article 3ca69b5e-3c89-5e3b-91b1-a3daf1b78d4b

The reported bombshell claim by former National Security Adviser John Bolton has left President Trump’s defenders “spinning like crazy” and likely triggered a “furious” response by Senate Republicans toward the White House, “Fox News Sunday” anchor Chris Wallace said Monday.

Appearing on Fox News’ live coverage of the Senate impeachment trial, Wallace told anchors Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum that he does not agree with the Trump team’s attempts to downplay the New York Times report. In his forthcoming book, Bolton reportedly claims that Trump explicitly linked a hold on Ukraine aid to an investigation of Joe and Hunter Biden.

“If you want a sense of how big the news is that we’ve heard in the last 12 or 14 hours, just listen to the Trump supporters, like Congressman Lee Zeldin and others, spinning like crazy. You get a sense that this is really an important development in this case,” said Wallace.

BOLTON’S MANUSCRIPT LEAKS AS MEMOIR PRE-ORDERS  BEGIN ON AMAZON; TRUMP FIRES BACK

Zeldin — a New York Republican who serves on the Trump defense team — told Baier and MacCallum that he does not believe the Bolton story changes the dynamics of the case.

“The president should be acquitted. We shouldn’t have even put the country through this in the first place. It does not change the dynamic that our country is being ripped in half right now,” said Zeldin.

The Times exclusively reported Sunday that Bolton’s book manuscript included a claim that Trump explicitly linked a hold on Ukraine aid to an investigation of Joe and Hunter Biden. Trump told Bolton in August, according to a transcript of Bolton’s forthcoming book reviewed by the Times, “that he wanted to continue freezing $391 million in security assistance to Ukraine until officials there helped with investigations into Democrats including the Bidens.”

WHITE HOUSE: BOLTON UKRAINE CLAIMS ARE UNTRUE, TIMING IS ‘VERY SUSPECT’

Trump fired back on Twitter on Sunday to refute Bolton’s claims, saying he “NEVER told John Bolton that the aid to Ukraine was tied to investigations into Democrats, including the Bidens.”

Trump went on to accuse Bolton of trying to “sell a book,” noting that Bolton did not complain publicly or privately about the aid holdup “at the time of his very public termination.”

Wallace said the impeachment trial previously appeared to be heading toward an acquittal later this week, with the Democrats’ calls for additional witnesses seeming to be “petering out.”

But he said the Bolton news may have changed the trajectory, possibly pushing a sufficient number of Republican senators to agree with Democrats that Bolton’s testimony is needed. He also said many Senate Republicans are likely “furious” at the White House and feel blindsided by the news.

“It seems to me that it’s going to be awfully hard for those Republican senators in the middle, maybe even some more senators than that, to now vote against witnesses … I suspect you’re going to find there are a lot of Republicans in that Senate lunch happening right now who are furious at the White House, saying: ‘Why didn’t you give us a heads up on this? We were [saying] no witnesses, nothing to see here, and you knew because the [book] transcript was submitted some time ago, you knew [Bolton] was going to basically incriminate you, so you put an egg on our face,'” said Wallace.

Holocaust survivor, 94, forms unlikely friendship with with middle schooler

A Holocaust survivor with no family in New York City didn’t talk to anyone at the nursing home until a middle school student said something that made her face light up. They recently celebrated her 94th birthday, too.

When Basti Williams, 14, an eighth-grader at the Allen-Stevenson School, visited the Upper East Side Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in the fall for a few hours with his classmates, he approached Hildegard, who was slouching down her wheelchair staring at a newspaper.

Basti introduced himself, to no avail. The staff told him that Hildegard, whose last name was not released, mostly kept to herself. But since her name was of German descent, he tried again but this time, the youngster said it in German, which he is fluent in.

Hildegard’s face lit up. They started talking and as time went by, she began opening up, and shared with Basti about how she survived the Holocaust. She had not told anyone at the rehab center that she was a Holocaust survivor.

“I froze, lots of emotions hit me at the same time, the look in her eyes filled with so much pain and sadness, bringing tears to my eyes,” Basti recalls. “I started having flashbacks of what we learned during history class. And here I was, finding myself speaking to someone who lived through it all.”

Harvey Weinstein accuser details her alleged assault in court: ‘I’m being raped’

At times sobbing, former production assistant Mimi Haleyi told jurors Monday at Harvey Weinstein’s rape trial how she tried to fight off the disgraced movie mogul and told him “no, no, no” while he sexually assaulted her.

“I did reject him, but he insisted,” said Haleyi, whose allegations against Weinstein led to his charges and trial. “Every time I tried to get off the bed he would push me back and hold me down.”

Haleyi testified she thought: “I’m being raped” and considered different options. “If I scream rape, will someone hear me?” she said before she “checked out.”

“I couldn’t get away from him at all, let alone get away,” Haleyi said. “I checked out and decided to endure it. That was the safest thing I could do.”

Weinstein, 67, is charged with forcibly performing oral sex on Haleyi in his New York City apartment in 2006 and raping another woman, an aspiring actress, in a Manhattan hotel room in 2013. He insists any sexual encounters were consensual.

HARVEY WEINSTEIN’S LEGAL TEAM CLAIMS IT HAS ‘DOZENS OF LOVING EMAILS’ FROM ACCUSERS

The 42-year-old Haleyi, whose legal name is Miriam Haley, is the first of the two women whose accusations are at the heart of the charges against Weinstein to take the stand at the closely watched #MeToo-era trial, which is in its fourth day of testimony.

Last week, “Sopranos” actress Annabella Sciorra testified that Weinstein overpowered and raped her after barging into her apartment in the mid-1990s. While outside the statute of limitations for criminal charges, Sciorra’s allegations could be a factor as prosecutors look to prove Weinstein has engaged in a pattern of predatory behavior.

Haleyi went public with her allegations at an October 2017 news conference, appearing in front of cameras alongside lawyer Gloria Allred, who also represents Sciorra and other Weinstein accusers.

Haleyi, born in England and raised in Sweden, said she met Weinstein while in her 20s at the 2004 London premiere of the Leonardo DiCaprio film “The Aviator.”

They crossed paths again at the Cannes Film Festival in 2006 and, when she expressed interest in working on one of his productions, he invited her to his hotel room and asked for a massage.

She declined, saying she was “extremely humiliated.”

“I felt stupid because I was so excited to go see him and he treated me that way,” she testified.

HARVEY WEINSTEIN ‘SILENCE BREAKERS’ SAY THEY ‘STAND IN SOLIDARITY’ WITH WOMEN TESTIFYING

More meetings followed, and Weinstein secured Haleyi a job helping on the set of “Project Runway,” the reality competition show he produced. She testified that before the alleged assault, Weinstein showed up at her apartment and begged her to join him a trip to Paris for a fashion show.

“At one point, because I just didn’t know how to shut it down so to speak. … So I said, ‘You know you have a terrible reputation with women, I’ve heard,’” Haleyi said.

The then-revered Hollywood honcho “got offended,” she said. “He stepped back and said, ‘What have you heard?’”

Asked by prosecutor Meghan Hast if she had any romantic or sexual interest in Weinstein, Haleyi firmly answered: “Not at all, no.”

The Associated Press does not typically identify people who say they have been victims of sexual assault, unless they agree to be named as Haleyi and Sciorra have.

In testifying, Haleyi will have to deal with a defense team that said it plans to confront Weinstein’s accusers with their own words — messages they exchanged with Weinstein well after the alleged assaults. Weinstein’s lawyers argue the positive-sounding emails and texts call into question the accusers’ accounts.

The jury of seven men and five women also heard testimony from Dr. Barbara Ziv, a forensic psychiatrist who said that most sex assault victims continue to have contact with their attackers, often under threat of retaliation if the victims tell anyone what happened.

Some of Haleyi’s messages were made public last year when Weinstein’s lawyers sought to get his case dismissed. One sent to Weinstein’s phone in 2007 reads: “Hi! Just wondering if u have any news on whether Harvey will have time to see me before he leaves? X Miriam.”
