Actress Rosie Perez will testify during Harvey Weinstein rape trial

“Do The Right Thing” actress Rosie Perez is set to testify at Harvey Weinstein’s trial to back up fellow screen star Annabella Sciorra’s allegation that he raped her in the mid-1990s.

Over objections from Weinstein’s lawyers, judge James Burke decided Friday to let Perez take the stand. Sciorra told jurors Thursday that Perez, a friend, was one of a few people she told about the encounter before coming forward publicly in 2017.

Sciorra said the then-powerful movie producer pushed his way into her New York apartment, pinned her on a bed and forced himself on her in 1993 or 1994.

HARVEY WEINSTEIN’S LEGAL TEAM CLAIMS IT HAS ‘DOZENS OF LOVING EMAILS’ FROM ACCUSERS

Prosecutors have said Sciorra told Perez weeks or months later that she thought something bad had happened to her and believed she had been raped.

According to prosecutors, Perez surmised through subsequent conversations that Weinstein was the alleged attacker, and an upset Sciorra told Perez that was true when she asked.

Weinstein denies ever having nonconsensual sex.

HARVEY WEINSTEIN ‘SILENCE BREAKERS’ SAY THEY ‘STAND IN SOLIDARITY’ WITH WOMEN TESTIFYING

His lawyers said Perez shouldn’t be allowed to testify, arguing that her account would be hearsay. Such testimony is sometimes allowed in sexual assault cases if an alleged victim spoke to another person promptly, but the defense said Sciorra’s conversations with Perez don’t qualify.

Perez gave a memorable performance in “Do The Right Thing” in 1989 and is also known for such movies as “White Men Can’t Jump.” She was nominated for a supporting actress Oscar for 1993’s “Fearless.”

Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani seem more in love than ever before.

On the heels of their recently released duet, “Nobody But You,” which they will perform together at the Grammys, the Oklahoma native gushed about the former “No Doubt” singer in a special segment with Gayle King on CBS.

Shelton, who moved on from his divorce from Miranda Lambert with his “Voice” co-host, said he’s never met a woman who’s wowed him quite like Stefani does.

GRAMMY AWARDS 2020: WHO IS PERFORMING?

“She has a way of looking at life in a way that I’ve never experienced,” the “God’s Country” singer told King (via Taste of Country). “And she always says that she doesn’t understand what I mean, but she has a way of looking at a person’s situation from every angle.”

The country crooner then described his girlfriend as “the most understanding, kindhearted person I’ve ever met.”

Shelton, 43, who is nominated for Best Country Solo for his “God’s Country” performance at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards, previously credited himself for turning Stefani, 50, into a country music fan.

BLAKE SHELTON ADMITS HE AGREED WITH CRITICS OF HIS ‘SEXIEST MAN ALIVE’ COVER IN 2017

“Since we’ve been together, this girl has literally fallen in love with country music. It’s all that she listens to, it’s all that’s on in her car,” he explained.

This week, Shelton and Stefani dropped a music video for their new duet, which gives fans a peek into their personal life.

The video shows Shelton singing alongside Stefani as they goof around at a diner, cuddle on the couch with their dog, Betty, and are in the car on a late-night drive.

Iranian missile attack on US base in Iraq left 34 soldiers with concussions, Pentagon says

Thirty-four American troops suffered concussions during the Iranian missile attack on a base in Iraq earlier this month following the killing of Revolutionary Guards Gen. Qassem Soleimani, the Pentagon said.

The announcement Friday comes after U.S. Central Command said last week that only 11 soldiers were flown out of Al Assad Air Base for treatment of concussion symptoms.

Eight U.S. troops have since returned to the U.S. for additional treatment, Jonathan Hoffman, the chief spokesman for the Department of Defense, said Friday.

California’s Russian River turns red after wine leak from 97,000-gallon tank

A spill from a 97,000-gallon tank at a California vineyard contaminated the Russian River with red wine, according to reports.

Enough cabernet sauvignon to fill more than 500,000 bottles spilled at the Rodney Strong Vineyards in Healdsburg on Wednesday.

“They’re probably smelling wine in Guerneville tonight,” Sonoma County Fire District Battalion Chief Mike Elson told Bay City News.

The wine leaked from a large blending tank at the sprawling vineyard.

“We are investigating this apparent mechanical failure,” a spokesman for the vineyard Chris O’Gorman said, according to Bay City News. “We are deeply concerned and are doing everything in our power to protect our waterways.”

California wildlife officials were keeping tabs on the spill and its impact on the river and marine life.

According to the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, about 20 percent of the 97,112 gallons spilled were contained. Estimates showed anywhere between 46,000 and 96,000 gallons reached the Russian River.

The Sonoma County Water Agency, which gets its drinking water from the Russian River, said its systems have not been affected, according to the Santa Rosa Press Democrat.

What does ‘pro-life’ mean?

The term “pro-life,” short for “right to life,” was adopted in the U.S. after the Supreme Court’s 1973 decision, Roe v. Wade, legalized abortion in all 50 states.

Advocates generally prefer to be identified as “pro-life,” as opposed to “anti-abortion,” to highlight their belief that abortion is the taking of human life. They believe life starts at the moment of conception and ends with natural death, while opponents, who identify as pro-choice, characterize them as restricting women’s reproductive rights.

What began largely as a Catholic movement peaks every year on the anniversary of Roe with the March for Life, which some years gathers as many as half-million attendees. It is largely attended by young people and women, according to organizers.

MARCH FOR LIFE: A LOOK AT THE LARGEST PRO-LIFE RALLY IN THE US

The march has expanded to other faiths and denominations that emphasize the right to life as God-given and also point to the secular science behind the movement.

The anti-abortion movement is aligned largely with the Republican Party. Four openly pro-life presidents – Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush and Donald Trump – have been elected since Roe.

In the last few years, politicians have pushed anti-abortion laws at state and local levels with success, but also many legal challenges.

To get past Apple encryption, NYPD uses $10 million lab with supercomputer generating millions of passwords

Inside a fortified $10 million lab that looks like something NASA might have cooked up, the New York Police Department is trying to crack the encryption of iPhones confiscated during alleged crimes.

The cybercrime unit’s radiofrequency isolation room, which is protected by two airtight, metallic doors designed to block any electromagnetic waves, is where the NYPD uses algorithms to try to extract data from locked phones before their owners can wipe them clean.

Apple and Google both encrypt the devices that consumers shell out hundreds of dollars for, so the conflict between law enforcement and Big Tech is likely to continue.

The phones get hooked up to two computers that generate random numbers in an attempt to figure out the passcode that locked each device, but there are a very large number of potential sequences; 10,000 random sequences had been tried on just one phone examined by Fast Company.

CYBER ATTACK ON MAJOR BANK COULD SPREAD FAST, NEW RESEARCH SHOWS

“You entrust us with this responsibility to protect the public,” Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance told Fast Company. “At the same time, they”—Apple and Google— “have taken away one of our best sources of information. Just because they say so. It’s not that some third party has decided, this is the right thing for Apple and Google to do. They just have done it.”

Apple has not yet responded to a request for comment from Fox News.

The lab also reportedly contains a supercomputer that can generate 26 million random passcodes per second, a robot that can extract a memory chip from a phone without using heat, and tools that can repair severely damaged devices.

Apple, which has made privacy a major focus of its marketing in recent years as other tech companies have been scrutinized, is unlikely to bend to the wishes of law enforcement anytime soon.

The company led by CEO Tim Cook came under fire recently from President Trump for not helping the FBI unlock the phones owned by the alleged shooter in the attack at Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Florida.

However, Apple maintained that it has already provided significant assistance in the investigation.

“We have always maintained there is no such thing as a backdoor just for the good guys,” Apple said, in its statement. “Backdoors can also be exploited by those who threaten our national security and the data security of our customers. Today, law enforcement has access to more data than ever before in history, so Americans do not have to choose between weakening encryption and solving investigations. We feel strongly encryption is vital to protecting our country and our users’ data.”

For his part, Vance remains skeptical that Apple does not have the ability to access iPhones through a secret back door.

“They get into my phone all the time because they upgrade my operating systems and they send me messages,” he said.

Do surgical masks protect against coronavirus?

Westlake Legal Group 694940094001_6126279612001_6126279771001-vs Do surgical masks protect against coronavirus? Amid the deadly outbreak of coronavirus in China that’s killed at least 26 people and sickened hundreds of others, officials in the country are encouraging the public to wear surgical masks to prevent the spread of disease. Demands for the masks have skyrocketed, with many retailers unable to keep up.

But the question remains: Do surgical masks really work?

CHINA CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK SENDS COUNTRY SCRAMBLING TO BUILD HOSPITAL

“Surgical masks will not prevent your acquiring diseases,” said Dr. William Schaffner, a professor of preventive medicine and infectious diseases at Vanderbilt University, and the medical director of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases, to Fox News.

Rather, he explained, surgical masks are typically used by surgeons to protect their patients from their mouth-borne germs —  but “those masks don’t work to prevent inhaling diseases,” said Schaffner.

The masks, which cover the nose and mouth, are often made from a flimsy material and aren’t fitted to the face. In other words, spaces and gaps can form around the cheeks and edges of the mouth, making it easy for air to move in and out.

US AIRPORTS DISPLAYING CDC WARNING POSTERS AMID CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK

“When coughing, you can feel the puffs of air coming out of the mask,” he said.

That said, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is currently recommending anyone infected with the novel coronavirus or being tested for it to wear a surgical mask when in public. And one infectious disease physician told The New York Times the masks could block “large respiratory droplets” from entering your body when an infected person sneezes or coughs. These large droplets are largely behind the spread of coronaviruses, the physician said.

A more protective mask, known as an N-95 respirator, may be more effective, said Schaffner.  But, he noted, a non-medical professional using this mask is likely not using it correctly, doing little to prevent the spread of illness or inhaling a disease.

“The chance of the average person going into a pharmacy, wearing them correctly and for long periods of time is unlikely,” he said.

DR. MARC SIEGEL: ‘I WOULD REALLY URGE PEOPLE NOT TO TRAVEL TO CHINA RIGHT NOW’

As for more preventative measures, Schaffner recommends “abundant hand-washing.” Other ways to stay safe can be found here.

In Southeast Asia — namely in countries such as China, Taiwan and Japan, among others — surgical masks are not only worn by sick people hoping to prevent the spread of illness but also for air-quality reasons, according to a 2014 report on the history of surgical mask usage in Asia.

Ancient rock carvings show procession of gods riding mythical animals

Archaeologists in Iraq have unearthed stunning rock carvings showing an Assyrian king paying tribute to his gods with a procession of mythical creatures.

The carvings, which are almost 3,000 years old, were publicly unearthed in the Faida district, north of Baghdad, after being hidden for several years to protect them from being damaged by the Islamic State militant group.

With the exception of carvings at the archaeological site of Khinnis, discovered near the city of Mosul in 1845, “there is no other Assyrian rock art complex that can be compared with Faida,” archaeologist Daniele Morandi Bonacossi of the University of Udine told Live Science.

The Faida reliefs depict a procession of seven Assyrian deities shown in profile standing on dragons, horned lions, bulls or horses, the researchers note.

Researchers said the carvings were first seen in the 1970s and site surveys began in 2012 — but the excavation work had to be halted when ISIS took over a significant chunk of territory in the region in 2014.

The carvings were found in bedrock above what was once an ancient canal built by Assyrian king Sargon for local irrigation.

Man reportedly caught cheating on kiss cam at soccer game

If you’re going to smooch someone on a stadium kiss cam, it should probably be the person you’re with.

One soccer fan recently sparked a social media firestorm after footage surfaced of him kissing a woman who reportedly wasn’t his wife or girlfriend.

In a Jan. 18 clip which has since been viewed over 27 million times online, a beaming Barcelona SC fan was seen kissing a tank top-clad woman at a game against Delfin in Ecuador before looking around, pulling his arm off her shoulders and slouching down in his stadium seat. As the embrace came to a hasty end, the woman’s face remained blank while the camera panned back to the field.

AMERICANS SAY VALENTINE’S DAY IS MORE EXCITING THAN CHRISTMAS, ACCORDING TO NEW SURVEY

“When you kiss your side chick and realize your marriage is over [cause] you’re on camera,” a Twitter user joked.

Commenters had a field day speculating whether or not the man’s suspicious body language indicated that he was actually cheating on his spouse or partner, poking fun at the situation and offering him words of advice. Even Nickelback chimed in.

Shockingly, new reports have claimed that the Barcelona SC fan was, indeed, being unfaithful during the now-viral moment. Metro identified the man as Deyvi Andrade, alleging that he has since admonished the attention and defended himself on Facebook and Instagram.

“You’ve already destroyed my relationship, what more do you want? You don’t know the psychological damage you have caused with your hatred directed at me,” he reportedly wrote online.

It remains unclear at this time whether or not Andrade was married to his now-ex, Metro claims. The man also reportedly apologized to his former flame, and begged for her forgiveness.

“I want to go back to living these moments by your side my lovely, I am really sorry and this is why I’ve come out in public to comment on this nonsense, so I can ask you to forgive me here on Instagram,” he allegedly said.
