NC man found wrapped in Christmas lights with dead cat in freezer died of natural causes, investigators say

A North Carolina man whose body was found wrapped in Christmas lights at the bottom of a staircase — with a dead cat in a freezer — earlier this month died of a stroke, investigators have determined.

Fran Oudshorn, 56, got tangled in the lights and fell on top of his pet kitten, the Wake County Sheriff’s Office concluded. Its investigation showed Oudshoorn was taking down the lights when he fell onto his cat and broke his back, sheriff’s spokesman Eric Curry told the News & Observer.

Deputies responded to Oudshorn’s home in Apex on Aug. 12 to discover blood on the walls, under his body and on the staircase.

His son reportedly called law enforcement to report the death. He told investigators he arrived at the home on Aug. 8 and found his father alive, tangled in the lights, and cut him loose.

He said he wrapped the cat in plastic and put it in a freezer and that his father asked for a pillow and blanket, WNCN-TV reported.

When he came back the next afternoon, he said he found his father dead and called 911. He told emergency dispatchers that it looked like his father “bled out.”

“Knowing he was going to have to deal with a deceased father, he put the cat in the freezer knowing that he was going to bury the cat at a later time,” Curry said.

Charges were not expected. A final report from the medical examiner’s office was pending.

Obama’s high school basketball jersey sells for $120G at auction

Former President Barack Obama’s game-worn high school basketball jersey – nearly lost forever in the trash – has sold at auction for $120,000.

A collector of American and sports artifacts, who didn’t wish to be identified, placed the highest bid for the 44th president’s 1978-79 Punahou School jersey, an article the Heritage Auctions listing called possibly “the most important basketball jersey that exists” given Obama’s later status.

MORE THAN 65,000 SIGN ONLINE PETITION TO RENAME STREET OUTSIDE TRUMP TOWER AFTER OBAMA

Peter Noble, a former schoolmate three years behind Obama, put the jersey — one part political, one part sports memento — up for auction. Noble, 55, who lived in Seattle, had rescued the number-23 jersey from the trash when the school got new varsity jerseys. The relic had been sitting in his closet ever since.

The jersey’s authenticity was checked using Noble’s yearbook, where Obama was seen in a photograph wearing the number 23. Heritage Auctions said it found that all the details and imperfections matched.

Obama’s love of basketball was well documented during his tenure in the White House. He told TNT’s Marv Albert in a 2010 interview that he played two to three times a week.

Decades earlier, he said the sport gave him a sense of purpose when he was growing up in Honolulu.

Noble said a portion of the sale will go to the school.

Hammerhead shark snatches catch from Florida fisherman’s hands, video shows

A Florida fisherman recorded video of his intense tug-of-war encounter with a huge hammerhead shark determined to steal his catch last week.

Rob Gorta, a fishing guide in the Tampa and St. Petersburg area for over 22 years, reeled in a tarpon that appeared to have bloody bite marks on its side.

With blood in the water, a hammerhead soon charged after the fish – and clearly didn’t plan on leaving emptyhanded.

“He just took it out of my hand!” Gorta could be heard yelling when the shark ripped the hooked fish from his grasp, in a video posted to his YouTube account.

Gorta and the shark battled in the waters off Anna Maria Island for the fish’s fate over the course of the 3-minute video. But, in the end, the hammerhead claimed its meal.

The charter captain told WFTS-TV that he desperately tried to unhook the tarpon to give the fish a chance to escape the shark. He estimated the predator measured 14 feet long and weighed over 1,000 pounds, according to WFLA-TV.

“I really felt bad for the fish, you know. They are an amazing fish, and I make a good living off of them,” Gorta told WFTS. “They are a lot of fun, and I have the utmost respect for them. There’s nothing I could really do to save that fish.”

Gorta wrote he couldn’t take the fish aboard his boat because Florida laws prevented lifting tarpon out of the water. He added that it would have been dangerous to bring the 180-pound fish aboard a 22-foot bay boat.

It’s illegal to lift tarpon over 40 inches in length out of the water, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Committee has said. In 2013, the committee made tarpon catch-and-release only.

Coast Guard rescues diver who disappeared exploring shipwreck off New Jersey

The Coast Guard reported Sunday the rescue of a diver who disappeared as she and members of her dive team were exploring an underwater shipwreck off the New Jersey coast.

Rescue boats responded Saturday morning to a distress call from the Gypsy Blood, a commercial dive vessel, reporting the woman had vanished off Asbury Park.

The diver was found several hours later near Shark River Inlet.

‘Good Boys’ tops box office, revives the R-rated comedy genre

The R-rated comedy, left for dead by some Hollywood studios, again reached No.1 at the box office over the weekend thanks to the raunchy coming-of-age tale “Good Boys,” about a trio of 12-year-olds on a crude misadventure.

“Good Boys” surpassed expectations to debut with $21 million, according to studio estimates Sunday, dethroning the “Fast & Furious” spinoff “Hobbs & Shaw,” which slid to second with $14.1 million in its third weekend. Not since Melissa McCarthy’s “The Boss” came in No. 1 all the way back in April 2016 has an R-rated comedy topped the North American box office.

“This is like a unicorn sighting,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for data firm Comscore.

‘HOBBS & SHAW’ RACES TO SECOND WEEK AT NO. 1 IN BOX OFFICE AS ‘THE KITCHEN’ GETS BURNED

In recent years, R-rated horror has largely taken the place of R-rated comedy at the box office, as Hollywood has increasingly ceded the genre to TV and streaming services. But Universal Studios, which released “Good Boys,” has kept the flame. The studio was behind “The Boss” as well as the intervening years’ highest grossing domestic comedies: 2017’s “Girls Trip” and 2018’s “Night School.”

“Good Boys” broke out of a crowded late-summer field of new releases. The weekend’s other new widely released films — the animated sequel “The Angry Birds Movie 2,” the shark attack sequel “47 Meters Down: Uncaged,” the Bruce Springsteen-inspired drama “Blinded by the Light” and Richard Linklater’s Cate Blanchett-led “Where’d You Go Bernadette” — all fizzled.

DISNEY’S LIVE-ACTION ‘THE LION KING’ JOINS ELITE CLUB

Directed by Gene Stupnitsky (who co-wrote the script with Lee Eisenberg), “Good Boys” stars Jacob Tremblay, Keith L. Williams and Brady Noon as sixth graders trying to make it to their first kissing party. The movie’s much-watched red-band trailer traded on its ironies. As Rogen says, Tremblay, Williams and Noon are all too young to see their own movie alone.

Jim Orr, distribution chief for Universal, credited Rogen and Goldberg’s Point Grey Pictures and the film’s clever marketing for the film’s performance.

“This is a genre that is very difficult to do and we’re having great success as a studio with a very diverse slate,” Orr said. “One of the common denominators there is our marketing department. They just over-deliver constantly with a broad range of films.”

‘AVENGERS: ENDGAME’ STILL NOT THE BIGGEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME THANKS TO ‘GONE WITH THE WIND’

The challenge of “Good Boys” was to turn out moviegoers older than the movie’s pipsqueak protagonists, and it did. Only 7 percent of the audience was under age 18, according to Universal, though 41% was under 25. Crowds split evenly between the sexes: 52 percent male, 48 percent female.

The release strategies behind some of the weekend’s other new films were harder to discern.

Sony’s “The Angry Birds Movie 2,” on a budget of $65 million, opened with a paltry $10.5 million domestically, though it added $19.4 million internationally. Hoping to snarl kids before school starts, Sony released the film on Tuesday. But it didn’t come close to the $38.2 million domestic debut of the first installment in 2016 despite notably better reviews (76 percent fresh on Rotten Tomatoes).

‘AVENGERS: ENDGAME’ SHATTERS ‘AVATAR’ BOX OFFICE RECORD

’47 METERS DOWN: UNCAGED’ STARS SISTINE STALLONE, CORINNE FOXX REVEAL WHAT FAMOUS DADS TAUGHT THEM

“47 Meters Down: Uncaged,” from Entertainment Studios, also showed little bite. It debuted with $9 million, a slight downtick from the $11.2 million the first one opened with in 2017.

A pair of films that might have been platform released to build word-of-mouth instead opened wide in bids to stand out in the traditional dumping-ground of late summer. But the results were mixed.

“Blinded by the Light,” which Warner Bros. plunked down $15 million for at the Sundance Film Festival, took in $4.5 million from 2,307 locations. The film, which has been warmly reviewed, is about a British-Pakistani teen growing up in 1980s England whose life is transformed after he discovers Springsteen.

‘BLINDED BY THE LIGHT’ TAKES VIEWERS ON A JOURNEY SET TO BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN TUNES

And United Artists’ “Where’d You Go Bernadette” grossed $3.5 million from 2,404 locations. Based on Maria Semple’s 2012 comic novel, Linklater’s film earned lukewarm reviews for its tale of a missing mother (Blanchett).

The “Good Boys” debut gave Universal, also behind “Hobbs & Shaw” its third straight weekend at No. 1 and 10th this year — second only to Disney.

With two weeks to go, the overall summer movie season is running 1.9 percent behind the pace of last summer, according to Comscore.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Where available, the latest international numbers for Friday through Sunday are also included.

Blake Shelton denies shading Lil Nas X in Trace Adkins duet referencing ‘Old Town Road’

Despite Lil Nas X smashing records left and right with “Old Town Road” and Billy Ray Cyrus, not everyone is a fan.

Blake Shelton and Trace Adkins‘ collaboration, “Hell Right,” references the county-rap hit, and their sentiments about the song seem less than flattering.

In “Hell Right,” Shelton, 43, sings, “Then the girl from the small town took off the ‘Old Town,’ put on a little Hank Jr.” Adkins, 57, then quips, “Thank God.”

LIL NAS X BREAKS BILLBOARD RECORD FOR MOST WEEKS AT NO. 1

Still, “The Voice” judge denied, through his rep, that he was shading Lil Nas X.

“It’s absolutely not throwing any kind of shade at Lil Nas X at all,” Shelton’s rep told Variety in a statement on Friday. “Blake says this literally has nothing to do with anything at all except how much the song is played. It could have been ‘Achy Breaky Heart’ or any other (overplayed) song.”

Shelton’s rep added, “Blake talked to Billy Ray and he thought it was funny.”

Shelton previously told Billboard of the track, “You can raise hell, or you can raise hell right. It’s about cutting loose and having fun the right way. I spend a lot of time in Los Angeles these days, but when I hear songs like this on the radio, I am immediately thinking about being back home and what I’d be doing if I was there. The first time I heard ‘God’s Country’ I was on my ranch in Oklahoma. As a guy who actually lives this lifestyle, ‘Hell Right’ hits me in the soul now just as much as ‘God’s Country’ did then.”

Duane Allman’s old guitar ‘Layla’ sells for $1.25 million

Fans of Duane Allman in Macon, Georgia, say they didn’t expect the late musician’s old guitar to sell for $1.25 million at a recent auction.

The gold-topped guitar is the one Allman played in the hit song “Layla,” where he performed with Eric Clapton, The Telegraph reported .

Until recently, the guitar affectionately called “Layla” had been on display at the Allman Brothers Band museum at The Big House in Macon.

“I don’t think anybody expected that,” Museum Director Richard Brent said of the amount. “The history of it is what sold it.”

Brent said the man who bought the guitar at the auction is an out-of-town collector who wishes to remain anonymous.

The buyer has agreed to share the instrument with the museum during certain times. That means it will be coming back to the museum in late November, Brent said.

“It will be coming back to The Big House in late November,” Brent said. “We couldn’t ask for more than that.”

Duane Allman played the guitar on the first two Allman Brothers records, and in “Loan Me a Dime” with Boz Scaggs, Brent said. The recording “Layla” with Derek and the Dominoes is among the last times Allman played that guitar.
