‘SNL’ hired Shane Gillis to address charges of anti-conservative bias, report says

Until it swiftly backfired, the recent hiring of comedian Shane Gillis was an attempt by “Saturday Night Live” to address criticism that the show was biased against conservatives, according to a report.

Sources told Variety that the comedy show’s producers were looking to counteract criticism against the show for its frequent sketches that have been critical of President Trump and members of his administration.

COMEDY HEAVYWEIGHTS RAIL AGAINST ‘CANCEL CULTURE’ IN WAKE OF ‘SNL’ CAST MEMBER’S ABRUPT FIRING

In hiring Gillis, a native of Pennsylvania, the producers went against a tradition of recruiting talent from comedy troupes such as The Groundlings, Second City and The Upright Citizens Brigade and instead relied on portions of Gillis’ stand-up routines in a vetting process that sources described as “severely lacking,” the report said.

It soon emerged that Gillis had used slurs against minorities and made derogatory comments about women and gays in past videos and podcasts.

The comedian offered an apology to anyone offended by his jokes  – describing himself as “a comedian who pushed boundaries” — but the backlash prompted “SNL” to rescind its job offer to Gillis earlier this week.

While some cheered the “SNL” reversal, others railed against what’s called “cancel culture” – a trend of trying to erase or quickly remove any person, thing or idea that has been deemed offensive.

After the Variety story appeared Tuesday, Salon.com writer Mary Elizabeth Williams responded Wednesday by arguing that “SNL” has always been a conservative show despite claims of it having a liberal bias

“This is a show, after all, that has had Donald Trump as its host twice — including once while he was running for president,” Williams writes. “Other auspicious ‘SNL’ hosts include Andrew Dice Clay, Steven Seagal and Steve Forbes.”

And just last year, she writes, Kanye West appeared on the show wearing a MAGA hat and declaring that “Ninety percent of the news are liberal.”

Crew member who survived California dive boat fire files lawsuit against owner: report

Westlake Legal Group 694940094001_6085749129001_6085751454001-vs Crew member who survived California dive boat fire files lawsuit against owner: report fox-news/us/us-regions/west/california fox-news/us/disasters/fires fox news fnc/us fnc b8f0f51a-d679-5989-8acc-bf933cae1a68 article

A crew member who was on the dive boat that caught fire off the Southern California coast earlier this month reportedly sued the boat’s owner and the dive charter company, claiming the boat was not properly maintained and employees lacked proper training.

The Pacific Coast Times reported that Ryan Sims, the crew member, claimed he was trapped with other employees when the fire broke out on the boat, called the Conception. He reportedly claimed he was forced to jump from the top deck into the water and broke one of his legs in three places.

All six crew members were asleep when the boat caught fire, killing 34 people, federal authorities said. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), in a preliminary report, said five crew members were sleeping in their quarters behind the wheelhouse on the second deck and another below deck when the fire broke out in the early hours of Sept. 2.

A lawyer for the company disputed the claim that they were asleep and said earlier that a crew member “checked” the galley area about 45 minutes before the fire broke out. Worldwide Diving Adventures, the dive company, was also named in the lawsuit.

Coast Guard records show the Conception passed its two most recent inspections with no safety violations. Previous customers said the company that owns the vessel, Truth Aquatics, and the captains of its three boats, were very safety conscious.

The paper said it reached out to lawyers for Truth Aquatics, but did not get an immediate response. Truth Aquatics Inc. filed suit in Los Angeles in federal court under a pre-Civil War provision of maritime law that allows it to limit its liability.

The suit said the company and owners Glen and Dana Fritzler “used reasonable care to make the Conception seaworthy, and she was, at all relevant times, tight, staunch, and strong, fully and properly manned, equipped and supplied and in all respects seaworthy and fit for the service in which she was engaged.”

Anyone who could make a claim against the company would be served with notice that the firm was asserting it was not liable for damages and victims will have a limited time to challenge that claim.

The time-tested legal maneuver has been successfully employed by owners of the Titanic and countless other crafts, and many maritime law experts said they’d anticipated it.

Two California middle school students were arrested after police said a student was sucker-punched during a fight on campus Monday that left him in critical condition, according to reports.

Police responded to Landmark Middle School in Moreno Valley, Calif., Monday at about 1 p.m. They found a seriously injured student who had been in a fight, according to a press release from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.  He was rushed to a nearby hospital and listed in critical condition, authorities said.

DEFENDANT SUCKER-PUNCHES HIS ATTORNEY IN ARIZONA COURTROOM

A Facebook video posted by an unverified account that purports to show the altercation that started with two students squaring off and then the third appearing to take the cheap shot. The alleged victim appeared to hit his head on a concrete pillar as he fell to the ground.

Two 13-year-old boys were arrested Monday and booked into Riverside Juvenile Hall, where they are expected to be charged with assault likely to produce great bodily injury. The identities of all three boys were not released by authorities because they are minors, the Times reported.

On Tuesday, officials from the sheriff’s department met with school staff to provide updates about the investigation, the Times reported. It is unclear what started the fight.

Back in March, a fight between about 50 students broke out at the school that prompted deputies to fire pepper balls into the crowd to break it up, the Los Angeles Times reported. Some were treated for minor injuries related to exposure to the irritant, but no one was seriously hurt.

Iconic conservative blogger Matt Drudge on Wednesday announced who he thought was going to be the Democratic nominee in 2020.

Drudge, founder of the news aggregation site The Drudge Report, took to Twitter and shared an image from Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren‘s rally she held in New York City this week, which reportedly had 20,000 attendees.

“It’s Elizabeth Warren’s nomination to lose…” Drudge tweeted.

Last year, Drudge correctly predicted that Democrats would win back the House of Representatives, but overestimated by claiming they would pick up 60 seats instead of the roughly 40 they flipped from Republicans.

However, in February 2016, Drudge predicted early on that Donald Trump would become the GOP nominee.

Warren has picked up momentum in most polls in recent months, but in the latest Fox News poll, she placed third with 16 percent, following former Vice President Joe Biden’s 29 percent and her progressive colleague Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders’ 18 percent.

Trump says EPA to slap San Francisco with violations related to homeless population

President Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One Wednesday that within a week, his administration will slap San Francisco with a notice of environmental violations related to the city’s homelessness problem.

TRUMP SAYS CALIFORNIA CITIES ‘DESTROY THEMSELVES’ WITH HOMELESSNESS

Trump made the remarks while returning to Washington, D.C. after a two-day fundraising trip in California.

Trump said the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will give San Francisco a notice related to the “tremendous” amount of pollution flowing into the ocean from the city’s storm sewers, Reuters reported. He also said hypodermic needles also littered the sewers there and were polluting the sea. Trump did not mention the source of the information.

“It’s a terrible situation that’s in Los Angeles and in San Francisco,” Trump said. “And, we’re going to be giving San Francisco, they’re in total violation, we’re going to be giving them a notice very soon.”

“They have to clean it up. We can’t have out cities going to hell,” he added, according to Bloomberg.

Former “Real Housewives of New Jersey” star Joe Giudice apparently decided to make the most of his time behind bars after being convicted of tax fraud in 2014.

Giudice – the 47-year-old husband of Teresa Giudice – spent a lot of time working out and now plans to become a mixed martial arts fighter if a judge OKs his release from ICE custody, according to a report.

He’s now at 165 pounds after entering prison at 215 pounds, the New York Post reported.

“According to him, he’s been doing a lot of the exercises and a lot of the routines that he learned when he got his black belt,” a source told the newspaper. “He’s been eating right, exercising, staying in shape, getting his body right and he feels like, as far as his condition, he feels stronger than he did when he was in his 20s.”

While Giudice was in prison, a judge ruled that he should be deported to his native Italy, but Giudice appealed the ruling so he remains in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement until his case is finalized, the Post reported.

Both Giudice and his wife were convicted of using $5 million in fraudulent mortgage and construction loans to finance their lifestyle. While Joe Giudice was sentenced to 41 months, Teresa Giudice received a 15-month sentence, according to the New York Daily News.

In April, daughter Milania Giudice, 14, made a pitch to President Trump on Instragram to try to halt her father’s deportation.

Teresa Giudice has also taken up bodybuilding in recent years, according to the Post.

The couple have four children. They appeared on “The Real Housewives of New Jersey” beginning in 2009. They later starred on the spinoff series “Teresa Checks In.”

NYT reporters claim Kavanaugh agreed to be interviewed ‘if they wrote they didn’t talk with him’

The New York Times reporters behind the controversial piece about Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh claimed on Wednesday night that he had agreed to be interviewed for their book under the condition that they write that they didn’t speak with him.

Appearing at a National Press Club event in Washington D.C., Robin Pogrebin and Kate Kelly, the co-authors of the new book “The Education of Brett Kavanaugh: An Investigation,” said Kavanaugh was willing to sit down with the them, but ultimately fell through because of his demand.

“Brett Kavanaugh agreed to talk to @katekelly and @rpogrebin for their book – If they wrote that they didn’t talk to him,” National Press Club president Allison Kodjak tweeted. “The authors – who told the story tonight @PressClubDC, refused and walked away from the interview.”

NEW YORK TIMES REPORTER BEHIND CONTROVERSIAL KAVANAUGH PIECE ADMITS TO WRITING TWEET THAT ALSO SPARKED BACKLASH

Fox News did not get an immediate response from Kavanaugh’s office.

Last weekend, the New York Times walked back an explosive report about a resurfaced allegation of sexual assault by Kavanaugh from his college days. The piece by Pogrebin and Kelly, adapted from their book, alleged there was corroboration of an incident in which Kavanaugh, as a college student at Yale, exposed himself to a female classmate at a party.

The update included the significant detail that several friends of the alleged victim said she did not recall the purported sexual assault. The newspaper also stated for the first time that the alleged victim refused to be interviewed, and has made no other comment about the episode.

On Monday, Pogrebin and Kelly claimed that the key information missing from their piece was in the original draft and suggested that the editors removed it.

“In your draft of the article, did it include those words that have since been added to the article?” MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell asked.

“It did,” both Pogrebin and Kelly responded.

“So somewhere in the editing process, those words were trimmed,” O’Donnell said in clarification.

Pogrebin then explained that The Times doesn’t usually include names of victims and that she believed that when the editors removed the name, the crucial information that she didn’t remember was also removed.

“So I think it was just sort of an editing, you know, done in the haste in the editing process,” Pogrebin added.
