Maryland authorities arrest three more suspects in deadly stabbing tied to MS-13

Authorities in Baltimore County, Md., said Thursday that three more people have been arrested in connection with a fatal Jtabbing in July that’s been linked to the MS-13 street gang.

Cockeysville residents Hugo Leonel Martinez-Vasquez, 22, Jose Alexi Villacorta-Rivas, 19, and Yoni Membreno-Parada, 17, have all been charged with first-degree murder and are being held without bail at the Baltimore County Detention Center, police said.

Last week, police arrested and charged seven people in connection with the murder of 21-year-old Daniel Alejandro Alvarado Cuellar on July 30. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said Tuesday that six of those seven people were part of MS-13 and in the country illegally.

The immigration status of the three suspects arrested Thursday was unclear at the time of publication.

Baltimore County Police said Cueller was stabbed in the Towson area while walking home from a laundry. His body was found July 31 in the grass outside an apartment building, with “multiple sharp-force injuries,” officials said.

Nearly two weeks later, police in Mississippi arrested the occupants of a white 2008 Dodge Caliber during a traffic stop, The Baltimore Sun reported. They said they matched the occupants to suspects seen in surveillance footage from the night of the murder.

Investigators then matched a suspect in the surveillance video to police bodycam footage from a traffic stop of the Caliber several days before the murder, according to The Sun.

Authorities have attributed the killing to a gang war involving MS-13. Police say they don’t anticipate more arrests.

Buttigieg alleges Trump voters are ‘supporting racism’

Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg suggested during Thursday night’s primry debate that those who back President Trump and his immigration policies are “supporting racism.”

During the debate, Jorge Ramos, the Univision anchor and a moderator of the ABC News-hosted debate in Houston, rattled off several immigration-related Trump administration controversies, including family separations at the border, a travel ban that blocked entrance to the U.S. from seven majority Muslim countries, and dust-ups over the president’s own incendiary rhetoric.

Buttigieg, the mayor of South Bend, Ind., was asked if people who support Trump and his immigration policies are racist.

BIDEN MOCKS SANDERS: ‘FOR A SOCIALIST, YOU’VE GOT A LOT MORE CONFIDENCE IN CORPORATE AMERICA THAN I DO’

“Anybody who supports this is supporting racism,” he shot back, without elaborating on what he meant by “this.”

Minutes later, Trump’s campaign communications director, Tim Murtaugh, responded.

“It is not a winning strategy to call half of America racist,” Murtaugh tweeted in a swipe at Buttigieg.

Last year, Trump signed an executive order that stopped family separations. When asked whether he would consider reinstating that policy, Trump recently said no.

KLOBUCHAR KNOCKS ‘MEDICARE-FOR-ALL’: ‘WHILE BERNIE WROTE THE BILL, I READ THE BILL’

With regard to the so-called travel ban, last year, the Supreme Court upheld the president’s controversial plan, which affected several mostly Muslim countries. The administration said that policy was enacted for national security reasons, which Chief Justice John Roberts said was “squarely within the scope of presidential authority.”

Arguing for a mandatory buyback of assault weapons, Democratic presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke declared during Thursday night’s  presidential debate, “Hell yes, we are going to take your AR-15, AK-47.”

The line from the former congressman from Texas received loud applause from the audience at the third-round debate, which was held in Houston.

2020 DEMOCRATS RAMP UP CALLS FOR MANDATORY ASSAULT WEAPONS BUYBACK

Answering Republicans’ argument that Democrats will take away people’s weapons, O’Rourke said that “we’re not going to allow them to be used against our fellow Americans anymore.”

In the wake of multiple deadly mass shootings last month, including two in Texas, many of the Dem candidates stepped up their calls for the federal government to start buying back assault-style weapons from owners – with some of the White House hopefuls urging mandatory buybacks.

O’Rourke was among the candidates to recently declare, “Americans who own AR-15s and AK-47s will have to sell their assault weapons.”

O’Rourke was complimented by his rivals on the debate stage for his outspoken efforts on the issue of gun violence. He suspended his campaign last month and returned to his home town of El Paso after a mass shooting there that left 22 people dead and many more injured. O’Rourke has made stemming gun violence an integral part of his campaign.

Andrew McCabe irks some CNN colleagues: ‘I have no sympathies for him’

CNN contributor Andrew McCabe is making waves at the cable news network after a U.S. attorney on Thursday recommended moving ahead with potential charges against the FBI honcho-turned-pundit.

McCabe, the former deputy and acting director of the FBI, appealed the decision of the U.S. attorney for Washington all the way up to Jeffrey Rosen, the deputy AG, but he rejected that request, according to a person familiar with the situation.

OUTGOING CNN CONTRIBUTOR ELIANA JOHNSON QUESTIONS NETWORK’S DECISION TO SEND HER PACKING

The potential charges relate to Justice Department inspector general findings against the CNN pundit regarding misleading statements tied to a Hillary Clinton-related investigation. The situation has raised eyebrows across the media industry and created a headache for the liberal-leaning CNN.

Some CNN staffers were reportedly aghast when the network hired McCabe in late August, simply because he’d been fired from the FBI for lying. Now that charges against McCabe are seemingly looming, some of the shock has turned to anger and confusion.

“It erodes our journalistic credibility to have so many highly anti-Trump, former Obama DOJ/security officials without a semblance of balance.”

— Current CNN personality

A current CNN on-air personality told Fox News this week that “it erodes our journalistic credibility to have so many highly anti-Trump, former Obama DOJ/security officials without a semblance of balance,” specifically pointing to pundits Samantha Vinograd, Jim Sciutto, Asha Rangappa, Juliette Kayyem and James Clapper, along with McCabe.

“It’s hard to see the justification for hiring him initially since it was publicly documented he’s, best case, a liar,” the on-air personality added. “How will CNN handle it if he’s also soon indicted?”

Former FBI honcho Andrew McCabe became a CNN correspondent in August.

A second current CNN  personality told Fox News on Thursday that many liberal-leaning staffers feel McCabe is “somewhat of a freedom fighter” who was “unfairly targeted” by the Trump administration. This was transparent on Thursday when CNN dispatched its top legal analyst, Jeffrey Toobin, to defend his “friend” McCabe while downplaying the potential charges.

CNN’S LEGAL GURU WEIGHS IN IN DEFENSE OF ‘COLLEAGUE AND FRIEND’ ANDREW MCCABE

“Andy McCabe is a CNN contributor. He’s a colleague and a friend to many of us who work here,” Toobin said. “This is an extremely unusual prosecution. Andy McCabe had the right to speak to reporters. That is beyond dispute. As deputy director of the FBI, he had the right to speak to reporters. He also has an impeccable record as one of the most honored and successful FBI agents of his generation.”

But not everyone inside CNN is defending McCabe.

The second anonymous on-air personality said he seems like a “good guy” in general but crucial blunders will ultimately define him.

“He made some colossal mistakes and the fact that he f—ing lied under oath, I have no sympathies for him. How will [CNN] have him on weigh in on anything related to integrity?”

ANDREW MCCABE TO APPEAR AS KEYNOTE SPEAKER AT DEMOCRATIC FUNDRAISER

The source predicted that CNN would “stand by McCabe until they can’t” and said network producers have kept McCabe out of situations where he could be “undressed” on-air by pundits with opposing views.

McCabe’s colleague also pointed out that CNN doesn’t typically refer to him as a “law enforcement analyst,” instead opting for the simpler label “correspondent.”

CNN did not immediately respond to multiple requests for comment.

The FBI famously fired McCabe on March 16, 2018, after a Justice Department inspector general report found he had repeatedly misstated his involvement in a leak to The Wall Street Journal regarding an FBI investigation into the Clinton Foundation.

Last month, McCabe sued the FBI and the Justice Department over his firing, arguing it was part of President Trump’s plan to rid the bureau of leaders he perceived as disloyal to him.

DePauw University professor and frequent CNN critic Jeffrey McCall told Fox News that the ratings-challenged network made a “questionable” move by hiring McCabe in the first place and needs to keep him off TV while things play out.

“With this latest development, the move looks even worse.  McCabe has credibility issues, and that is a problem for a news channel that has had its professional practices challenged of late,” McCall said. “At the least, it would behoove CNN to suspend McCabe from his contributor position until the legal process has worked its way out.”

Brooke Goldstein: Sanders, Warren, O’Rourke among Dems showing hostility to Israel

The Democratic Party has been a strong supporter of Israel and a strong opponent of anti-Semitism since President Harry Truman recognized the Jewish state when it declared independence from Britain in 1948. But unfortunately, this is no longer true of some Democratic presidential candidates and other Democratic elected officials.

This represents a disturbing shift from the Democratic Party of decades past, when support for Israel and opposition to anti-Semitism were pillars of the party.

Every Democratic president from Truman through Bill Clinton stood firmly with Israel – not agreeing with Israeli leaders on everything, but understanding that Israel is an invaluable ally that benefits the U.S. in many ways and an outpost of democracy in the unstable Middle East.

PALESTINIAN SCHOOL CURRICULUM IS ‘MORE RADICAL THAN THE CURRICULUM THAT CAME BEFORE,’ RESEARCH INSTITUTE SAYS

Sadly, in recent years more and more Democrats have taken to demonizing anyone who supports the Jewish state – even going as far as to falsely label them as Islamophobic.

More from Opinion

So what say those who want to be our next president? We already have some clues.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt. – the only Jewish American among the leading presidential candidates – has been the most hostile towards Israel. He has referred to the Israeli government as “racist” and “oppressive” and has advocated cutting U.S. military support.

Sanders recently tapped Linda Sarsour, a rabid anti-Semite, to join his campaign. He then proceeded to speak at an Islamic Society of North America conference that promoted Islamic law, admonishing Muslims to wage jihad against the Jews.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., hired a director for progressive partnerships who openly supports Hamas, a militant terrorist group that seeks Israel’s destruction and has launched rockets and terrorist attacks on Israeli civilians from its base of operations in the Gaza Strip.

Former Rep. Beto O’Rourke of Texas bluntly called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a “racist.” This is a shameful act of hostility towards the democratically elected leader of a close American ally.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt. – the only Jewish American among the leading presidential candidates – has been the most hostile towards Israel

We know less about where the other major Democratic presidential candidates stand. Sens. Kamala Harris of California and Cory Booker of New Jersey have avoided direct confrontation and continue to present a moderate approach to U.S.-Israeli relations.

Former Vice President Joe Biden stood and watched as the relationship between President Barack Obama and Netanyahu grew increasingly strained. Biden has said Netanyahu is taking Israel in the “wrong direction” and reportedly strong-armed Ukraine into voting against Israel at the United Nations in the waning days of the Obama administration.

Voters like me, who have supported candidates on both sides of the aisle, need to know that whoever serves as president of the United States will not only speak up for Israel, but also actively fight against anti-Jewish bigotry.

Meanwhile, some other Democratic elected officials have taken to spreading anti-Semitic tropes, accusing Jews of dual loyalty and suggesting that Jewish money makes the world go round.

Shamefully, Democrats in Congress could not even come together to pass a resolution unequivocally singling out and condemning anti-Semitism. Instead, they passed a watered-down resolution broadly condemning all types of prejudice.

Then there’s the unlawful and anti-Semitic push to boycott Israeli people and businesses, known as the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Movement (BDS). By cutting off Israel from the world, BDS seeks the economic strangulation of the world’s only Jewish state.

The hate-filled BDS campaign has crept from fringe political circles to the mainstream of the Democratic Party. Sixteen Democratic House members recently voted against legislation condemning BDS, including celebrity freshmen Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York.

When she was a candidate for the House seat she now holds, Omar told Jewish voters in her district that she thought BDS was counterproductive to peace efforts. Candidate Tlaib said she supported a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Both completely reversed their positions after winning their respective elections.

Throughout history, rising anti-Semitism has always been accompanied by other forms of radicalization and the degradation of democracy overall.

Will Democrats continue to creep closer to radical anti-Israel and even anti-Semitic policy positions? Will they undermine the party’s traditional values of tolerance and equality? If so, they risk consigning themselves to the tragic fate of Jeremy Corbyn’s British Labour Party, which has allowed a culture of anti-Semitism to take root and poison the entire institution.

In an all-too-familiar routine, far too many Democrats pander to the Jewish community on pro-Israel issues when running for office and then turn around and show their true colors after Election Day.

To date, the candidates running for president have skated by – banking on the fact that no one is asking them about a subject they’d rather ignore.

The Justice Department’s recommendation to move forward with charges against ex-FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe exemplifies the fairness of the American justice system, according to Trey Gowdy.

McCabe’s effort to avoid charges relating to lying to federal investigators was stymied when Deputy Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen rejected the new CNN contributor’s appeal, Gowdy said Thursday on “The Story.”

“It’s a celebration of our justice system, where you can be the second-in-command at the world’s premier law enforcement agency and still be subject to investigation and potentially indictment,” said Gowdy, a Fox News contributor and former South Carolina Republican congressman.

Earlier Thursday, Fox News learned that U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jessie Liu recommended moving forward with charges against McCabe.

On “The Story,” Gowdy told host Martha MacCallum the ex-FBI official is nonetheless afforded the same constitutional rights as anyone else.

“He’s presumed innocent,” he said, noting some political observers may find that fact “wildly unpopular.”

“And even if he’s indicted, the indictment is no evidence of a crime,” Gowdy added.

More from Media

“I know politics doesn’t reward fairness, but our justice system needs to survive long past the political vagaries.”

Gowdy said McCabe lied to DOJ Inspector General Michael E. Horowitz and “leaked something that was in his best interest.”

“It’s the oldest motive known to man, which is self-interest,” he said.

A source close to McCabe’s legal team said they received an email from the Department of Justice which said, “The department rejected your appeal of the United States Attorney’s Office’s decision in this matter. Any further inquiries should be directed to the United States Attorney’s Office.”

McCabe spent 21 years with the FBI. He became the acting director in May 2017 after President Trump fired Director James Comey.

His legal team met with Liu in person to make an appeal not to move forward with any prosecution. They also met in person with Rosen for the same reason, according to a person familiar with the meetings.

McCabe’s team also sent an “extensive” letter to Rosen following the meetings, laying out their reasoning against moving forward with a prosecution, according to the source.

A Senegalese national living in Southern California pleaded guilty Thursday to impersonating a dead American citizen for 31 years to net thousands of dollars in federal, state and local government benefits, according to federal prosecutors.

Almamy Baba Ly, who was living in La Mesa,  admitted in San Diego federal court to identity theft charges, acknowledging that he misused the identity of Lyle Lindsey, who died in a car accident as a toddler in 1957, to obtain identification documents.

As part of his plea, Ly admitted that he was born in Senegal and did not have legal status to live in the U.S.

Federal prosecutors said Ly, who was arrested in July, somehow obtained an altered copy of Lindsey’s birth certificate and used it to apply for a Social Security number, California identification card and driver’s license.

Ly also said he used Lindsey’s identity to apply for and receive more than $80,000 in federal student loans and Pell grants from 2012 until 2019, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said. In his plea agreement, Ly also admitted to applying for nutrition assistance programs, getting thousands of dollars in benefits that he was not legally entitled to receive.

Also, Ly was convicted of several crimes, including robbery and selling drugs, under Lindsey’s identity, prosecutors said.

“This was an especially sophisticated and devious fraud that victimized U.S. taxpayers for decades and forced a family to revisit a traumatic loss,” U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer said. “Finding out that someone is committing crimes in the name of a child who was lost many years ago brings unacceptable anxiety to his survivors.”

Ly’s attorney, Jeremy Delicino, did not immediately respond to Fox News’ request for comment.

Prosecutors said as a part of his plea agreement, Ly agreed to make full restitution to the U.S. Department of Education and to the County of San Diego for the more than $88,000 in benefits that he fraudulently received.

He faces up to 55 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $1 million when he is sentenced in December.

Entrepreneur Andrew Yang promised during Thursday night’s debate to give $120,000 to at least 10 random families over the next year – the latest campaign stunt from the unconventional candidate who says he would push for a universal basic income plan as president.

“I’m going to do something unprecedented tonight,” Yang said in his opening statement. “My campaign will now give a freedom dividend of $1,000 a month for an entire year to 10 American families – someone watching this at home right now. If you believe that you can solve your own problems better than any politician go to Yang2020.com and tell us how $1,000 a month will do just that.”

Afterward, laughter could be heard in the debate hall in Houston, including from Sen. Amy Klobuchar. South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg followed by saying, “It’s original, I’ll give you that.”

ANDREW YANG BEMOANS THIRD DEMOCRATIC DEBATE DATE, TIME: ‘FOOTBALL FANS VOTE TOO’

In a news release, Yang’s campaign said the monthly payments will be funded by the campaign.

“We consulted with our counsel, and the Freedom Dividends are fully compliant with all FEC regulations,” the campaign said in a statement.

WITH HELP OF ‘YANG GANG,’ ANDREW YANG ELBOWS HIS WAY TO DEM DEBATE STAGE

A central part of Yang’s campaign pitch is his expensive proposal to give all Americans what he calls a “freedom dividend” of $1,000 a month. He has said he would pay for it by putting a value-added tax on tech companies.

Yang is already personally funding a $1,000 a month freedom dividend for three families.

Speaking to Fox News earlier this year, Yang insisted that giving away money to voters is “100 percent legal,” saying he consulted lawyers and the Federal Election Commission first. He denied it amounts to buying votes.

“All you have to do is talk to any of the people that are actually receiving the freedom dividend and ask them has anyone from my campaign ever said that they need to do anything in return and you will categorically no: they can vote for whoever they like,” Yang said in June.

Ahead of the debate, Yang teased the forthcoming debate stunt, tweeting earlier this week that “we’ve got something big in store.”

In the run-up to the debate, Yang also worked to portray himself as different from the other politicians running for president, posting a “debate prep” video showing him boxing and playing basketball. He also recently shared video of himself crowd surfing over supporters.

“For those wondering I will be crowdsurfing in sandals at Thursday’s debate,” he joked on Twitter.

Yang, a New York entrepreneur who has never run for office and was not famous before his run, has elbowed his way onto the debate stage with the help of a fervent group of supporters he calls the “Yang Gang.”

Michigan cop who had KKK memorabilia in home is fired

A Michigan police officer who was put on leave after a potential homebuyer found Ku Klux Klan memorabilia in the officer’s house was fired Thursday following an investigation.

Muskegon City Manager Frank Peterson told MLive.com that Officer Charles Anderson had been let go following an inquiry and a disciplinary hearing.

Peterson said a redacted version of the inquiry report would be released to the public next week.

The investigation was prompted when Rob Mathis, who is black, and his wife were touring Peterson’s home last month, with an eye toward a possible purchase. They reportedly found a framed KKK membership application hanging on a wall, along with Confederate flags.

“In the bedroom, right across … there was a plaque up there, all by itself,” Mathis told a local news outlet.

He described what he saw in a viral Facebook post that prompted city officials to look into the matter. The inquiry was intended to determine whether Anderson, who is white, violated city policy.

“Some questions arose that we’d like to have further answered,” Muskegon Police Chief Jeffrey Lewis told city commissioners during an Aug. 27 meeting to announce the end of the inquiry. “But I can tell you this, after reviewing this — and it was a quite lengthy investigation — what you saw on social media pretty much stands the way it is.”

“There was no smoking gun revealed to us or anything that shocked us,” he added.

Anderson had been on the force since 1997. He was cleared of wrongdoing in the 2009 fatal shooting of an unarmed black man following an investigation.

report by then-Muskegon County Prosecutor Tony Tague found that Julius Johnson hit Anderson in the head with a police radio and “another blunt object” and noted that Anderson was forced to get a metal plate installed in his head.

Mathis said he was “glad the city was moving forward in a positive direction.” He also said Anderson’s firing would do little to change a police culture where officers protect each other and fail to hold one another accountable, MLive reported.

“There are other officers within the police force that have been to Anderson’s home and were well aware of the Confederate flags,” Mathis claimed. “[Officers who] contributed to that behavior, instead of saying we as a police force are supposed to have good attitudes when making decisions for our community.

“These KKK applications, flags, they’re not indicative of people who should protect and serve our community.”

A Minnesota judge issued a bench warrant for the arrest of R&B singer R. Kelly on Thursday after the musician failed to appear for an initial court hearing in a case in which he’s accused of offering a 17-year-old girl $200 to take off her clothes and dance in 2001.

Kelly — who is jailed in Chicago on sexual abuse and other charges — was charged in Minnesota in August for allegedly soliciting the girl after meeting her before a concert in Minneapolis.

During Thursday’s brief hearing, prosecutor Judith Cole told Judge Jay Quam that federal authorities in Illinois were “not willing to give us access to him” until his case there is resolved. The judge then issued a bench warrant as a formality.

Kelly attorney Steve Greenberg, who didn’t attend the hearing and isn’t officially registered in the Minnesota case, said neither he nor his client ever got notice of it. Greenberg also insisted on Twitter that neither he nor Kelly was “served with any notice of court proceedings.”

“I did not resist his appearance, nor did he,” Greenberg added.

“He is in custody,” Greenberg continued. “It is the prosecutor who must obtain a court order for #RKelly to appear, and it is the prosecutor who must go get him if, as here, he is in custody elsewhere. They do not just give him a travel pass from federal custody.”

A spokesman for the county attorney’s office said the summons was sent to Kelly’s last known address.

A rep for Kelly did not immediately respond to Fox News’ request for comment.
