Felicity Huffman pleads for no jail time in college admissions scandal

Attornies for “Desperate Housewives” star Felicity Huffman pleaded with a Boston federal judge Friday to spare her jail time after she pleaded guilty in connection with the college admissions bribery scandal and instead give her probation, community service and a fine.

In a three-page letter to U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani, Huffman wrote she has “a deep and abiding shame” for participating in a scheme in which she paid $15,000 to have a proctor correct her daughter’s SAT exam answers in the hopes of getting her into an Ivy League college.

Huffman said she was trying to give her daughter, whom she says has a diagnosed learning disability and struggles with math, an opportunity to become an actress.

FELICITY HUFFMAN TALKS MOTHERHOOD AS EVA LONGORIA SAYS SHE COPED WITH COLLEGE SCANDAL ‘WITH GRACE’

“In my desperation to be a good mother, I talked myself into believing that all I was doing was giving my daughter a fair shot,” Huffman wrote. “I see the irony in that statement now because what I have done is the opposite of fair. I have broken the law, deceived the educational community, betrayed my daughter, and failed my family.”

The 56-year-old Emmy Award winner pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud in May and is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 13.

Huffman’s lawyers believe that one year of probation, 250 hours of community service with an organization that works with at-risk youth in Los Angeles and a $20,000 fine is fair, asserting that similar cases “almost always” result in probation rather than jail time which is “exceptionally rare.”

U.S. Attorney Andrew Lelling is pushing for one month of jail time, a year of probation after that and a $20,000 fine, a sentence he says takes into account the fact that Huffman has accepted responsibility for her actions.

Lelling says Huffman knew the scheme was wrong and participated in it anyways.

“Her efforts weren’t driven by need or desperation, but by a sense of entitlement, or at least moral cluelessness, facilitated by wealth and insularity,” his office wrote in its filing Friday. “Millions of parents send their kids to college every year. All of them care as much she does about their children’s fortunes. But they don’t buy fake SAT scores.”

Under federal sentencing guidelines, prosecutors could have sought up to six months of jail time.

Meanwhile, Huffman’s actor husband William H. Macy, who wasn’t charged in the scheme, and her “Desperate Housewives” co-star Eva Longoria were among two dozen people who submitted letters to the court on her behalf.

Macy detailed his family’s struggles in the wake of the scandal, saying that his wife hasn’t been able to find work since she was arrested six months ago and her daughter, now in college, has been taking a gap year. He also said Huffman’s younger daughter, who is in high school is attending therapy.

“Felicity’s only interest now is figuring out how to make amends and help her daughters heal and move on,” Macy wrote.

In a two-page letter, Longoria praised her friendship with Huffman calling her  a “gentle character” with a “kind heart.”

Longoria also said of Huffman: “She always leads with her heart and has always put others first.”

Huffman is among 51 people charged in a scheme in which prosecutors say wealthy parents paid an admissions consultant to bribe coaches and test administrators to help their children get into prestigious colleges.

Huffman’s bribe is among the smaller ones. “Full House” star Lori Loughlin and her fashion designer husband, Mossimo Giannulli, are charged with paying $500,000 for their two daughters to get into elite universities. Both have pleaded not guilty to charges which include conspiracy to commit fraud and money laundering and are facing maximum jail sentences of 40 years in prison.

Hannity: Trump ‘improving the quality of life for everyone in this country’

Fox News’ Sean Hannity took some time Friday to highlight some of President Trump’s accomplishments Friday, praising Trump for “improving the quality of life” for Americans.

“Our economy is now humming on all cylinders and thankfully working for our entire family, all Americans,” Hannity said before listing what he believes to be some of Trump’s accomplishments.

“The president’s tax cuts, they were a huge success. The president’s deregulation, a huge success. The new trade deals with Mexico, Canada, the European Union, Japan … A big win for American goods. And by the way, I would expect that the deal with China is going to be free and more fair at the end of the day.”

Hannity also touted the president’s work on building “the wall” along the southern border.

DEFENSE SECRETARY SIGNS OFF ON SPENDING $3.6B TO BUILD 175 MILES OF BORDER WALL

“By the way, construction of the wall — the biggest unreported story this week — is well underway,” Hannity said, criticizing the media for his perceived lack of coverage.

The Fox News host then prodded House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and other Democrats for being unhappy at how the president procured funding for the border fence.

“Nancy Pelosi, a lot of Democrats they supported Obama’s wall but they don’t support Trump’s wall. That’s their problem,” Hannity said.

Hannity praised Trump for his push for border security and dedication to Americans.

“The president is absolutely right to make the border a priority. And that means we can prevent those drugs from getting in the hands of American kids,” Hannity said. “The president is … dedicated to improving the quality of life for everyone in this country.”

President Trump’s economic policies have led to steady economic growth and improved unemployment figures, but the media ignores those achievements, according to radio host Mark Levin.

The president rightly cut taxes and regulations in a way similar to former President Ronald Reagan’s “Reaganomics,” which also was panned by the press, Levin said Friday on “The Mark Levin Show” on Westwood One.

“This is truly incredible,” he said. “These numbers are incredible and we should be celebrating them. The American economy, when let loose by a president and a Congress — a president slashing regulations, a president slashing taxes — creating a healthy, vibrant economic environment has positive consequences for the American people.

MARK LEVIN: MAINSTREAM MEDIA DOESN’T ‘FOLLOW’ THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY, THEY ‘LEAD’ IT

“They used to mock Reagan — Ooh, Reaganomics! — Yeah, it created 25 million new jobs through his administration, through ‘Bush 41’s’ administration and even into Clinton’s administration.”

In that regard, Levin said Trump is following the lead of Reagan, the nation’s 40th president, who served two terms from 1981 to 1989.

“This is Trumponomics and he’s doing very much the same thing,” Levin said. “These employment levels are historic. They’re record-breaking. We haven’t seen this kind of thing ever. And no, he didn’t inherit it from Obama, Trump’s policies have been completely opposite of Obama.

MARK LEVIN: COMEY ‘SHOULDN’T HAVE BEEN ANYWHERE CLOSE’ TO A LAW ENFORCEMENT CAREER

“This is Trumponomics — and Trumponomics is working.”

However, Levin — who also hosts Fox News’ “Life, Liberty & Levin” — claimed the American people may not realize how well the country is doing because reporters and politicians refuse to speak frankly on the matter.

More from Media

“You would think the media would be celebrating, the Democrats would be celebrating, the Republicans would be celebrating,” he said.

“Instead it’s ‘Ho-hum’ and ‘The recession is coming’ — but the recession is not coming, according to the Federal Reserve chairman.”

The Pennsylvania-born radio host added the press has instead sought to stifle news of economic achievements.

“They want to talk down the economy,” he said. “Hollywood is doing it, CNN is doing, [MSNBC] is doing it… they’re all doing it.

“The media on all platforms … has been shouting the word ‘recession’ for a month, but they won’t give Trump any credit. They won’t give capitalism any credit. Instead, on and on with the Marxist pablum that is regurgitated by the Democrats who want to be the nominee for president.”

The Trump administration may consider a making significant reduction to the number of refugees admitted into the U.S. beginning next month due to a massive backlog of more than 900,000 asylum cases, a senior administration official told Fox News Friday.

The number of people seeking asylum is severely limiting how many refugees can be vetted, the official said, and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) might not even hit this year’s cap of 30,000 refugees. The Associated Press reported that 28,501 refugees were accepted between Oct. 1, 2018, and Sept. 6.

WARREN PLANS TO INCREASE ANNUAL REFUGEE ADMISSIONS NEARLY 800 PERCENT FROM FY2018

USCIS is in the process of reassigning workers who process refugee cases to handle asylum claims, which have put a strain on the system, the official said, stressing that the crisis at the southern border takes priority over processing refugee claims.

The New York Times reported that top officials will meet in the Situation Room on Tuesday to discuss new proposals to the refugee cap, which is set by the president. The Associated Press reported that some officials have argued for the cap to be set as low as 15,000, while the Times reported that others have argued the cap should be reduced all the way to zero.

It’s unclear what direction the White House will take in setting the new refugee policy, or if a new cap will be reconfigured to include both refugees and asylum seekers.

MEXICO ANNOUNCES 56 PERCENT DROP IN NUMBER OF MIGRANTS ARRIVING AT US BORDER

President Trump has a Sept. 30 deadline to set the refugee cap.

In fiscal year 2018, the cap was 45,000 and 22,491 were admitted. That’s one-quarter of the number allowed to enter two years ago and the lowest since Congress passed a law in 1980 creating the modern resettlement system.

The reduced number of refugees being admitted is due to the more stringent protocols for citizens from 11 countries that the administration has said present the greatest security threat, and the State Department has acknowledged there are fewer refugee admissions due to the screening and vetting procedures.

The tighter screening procedures reflect President Trump’s travel ban on people from seven Muslim majority countries – Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.

Administration officials have said the U.S. remains at the forefront of helping those fleeing persecution, and they note that from the 2008 budget year to 2017, the U.S. gave lawful permanent resident status to 1.7 million people for humanitarian reasons.

Maine set to become first state to allow ranked voting in presidential election

Maine is poised to become the first state in the country to implement a system allowing voters to rank candidates in presidential elections.

Democratic Gov. Janet Mills said Friday she would allow the bill to become law without her signature in January 2020, which means that the system won’t be used in the state’s March 3 presidential primary. Instead, the bill won’t take effect until 90 days after the next legislative session adjourns in April or May.

Ranked voting in Maine was approved by voters in 2016 but only used for federal races and primaries. The system was the subject of controversy in 2018, when Republican U.S. Rep. Bruce Poliquin lost his bid for reelection in Maine’s second house district to Democratic opponent, Jared Golden despite having more votes than his closest opponent.

That’s because under the ranked voting system, voters categorize a crowded field of candidates from favorite to least favorite. If a candidate fails to win the majority of votes, the last-place finisher is eliminated and the second-choice votes of everyone who ranked that candidate first are allocated until someone receives more than 50 percent.

DEMOCRATIC MAINE SENATE CANDIDATE APPEARS TO ERASE LOGO FROM NON-L.L. BEAN JACKET IN CAMPAIGN VIDEO

Poliquin argued in federal court that ranked voting is unconstitutional because its unique runoff system produces a “faux majority” winner of elections and confuses voters. U.S. District Judge Lance Walker disagreed, ruling that critics can question the wisdom of ranked-choice voting, but that such criticism “falls short of constitutional impropriety.”

Supporters of the ranked choice system who have been trying to spread it to more states cheered the expansion Friday. Such advocates hope the law could boost the influence of an independent and third-party presidential candidate in Maine, one of two states that split their electoral votes, and sway the outcome in a tight race.

Mills said Friday that she is confident ranked voting will give “voters a greater voice and it encourages civility among campaigns and candidates at a time when such civility is sorely needed.”

Still, she admitted that there were some “serious questions about the cost and logistics of ranked-choice voting, including collecting and transporting ballots from more than 400 towns in the middle of winter, and questions remain about the actual impact of this particular primary on the selection of delegates to party conventions.”

The bill says using ranked voting in presidential races would have a “minor cost increase.” Democratic Secretary of State Matt Dunlap has estimated primaries implementing the new system could cost $100,000.

“By not signing this bill now, I am giving the Legislature an opportunity to appropriate funds and to take any other appropriate action in the second regular session to fully implement ranked-choice voting in all aspects of presidential elections as the Legislature sees fit,” Mills said.

Opponents of the switch to a primary have until Sept. 18 to submit enough signatures. Then, voters in June would have a chance to weigh in on the law approving the change.

About two dozen cities — Including Cambridge, Mass., and St. Paul, Minn. — allow the use of ranked choice voting in certain elections, according to advocacy group FairVote.

The group says at least a half dozen cities are set to use the system in upcoming elections, while several state Democratic parties, such as in Kansas, plan to use ranked voting in presidential primaries next spring.

Christine Blasey Ford’s attorney, Debra Katz, undermined her client’s credibility when she discussed accusations against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, according to Lisa Boothe.

Katz said part of Blasey Ford’s “motivation” for coming forward with claims against Kavanaugh during his contentious confirmation hearings stemmed from the assertion the justice would be tagged with an “asterisk” in future abortion cases, Boothe claimed Friday on “The Story.”

KAVANAUGH ACCUSER’S LAWYER SAID ALLEGATIONS COULD HELP UNDERMINE ABORTION RULINGS: ‘PART OF WHAT MOTIVATED CHRISTINE’

“In fact, all of the attorneys that these accusers had acquired all are Democratic donors and Democrat attorneys. I think it further undermines and erodes any credibility Christine Ford ever had.”

Boothe continued, adding she believed Blasey Ford proved less than truthful during the Kavanaugh hearings.

“By the time the Washington Post ever went to print with her original story, she had already given multiple versions of the event. She lied about her fear of flying,” she claimed.

Katz made the remarks at the University of Baltimore’s 11th Feminist Legal Theory Conference, titled “Applied Feminism and #MeToo.” Her comments were first quoted in the book “Search and Destroy: Inside the Campaign Against Brett Kavanaugh” by Ryan Lovelace, which Fox News has obtained.

“In the aftermath of these hearings, I believe that Christine’s testimony brought about more good than the harm misogynist Republicans caused by allowing Kavanaugh on the court,” Katz said in the video. “He will always have an asterisk next to his name. Tyler Perry is letting those in the Bahamas know that he hasn’t forgotten about all they’ve had to endure thanks to Hurricane Dorian.

The television and movie mogul is using a personal asset — a seaplane — to transport relief supplies to the Abaco Islands, a portion of the tropical region hit particularly hard by the potent monster of a storm this week, TMZ reported Friday.

TYLER PERRY COMPLAINS ABOUT PRICEY BOTTLED WATER: ‘WHAT THE HELL THIS WATER DO, CURE CANCER?’

Perry’s plane, which is based in Nassau, had already made two trips on Thursday and the “Madea Goes to Jail” writer, actor and producer-director hopes to send several more supply shipments – water, juice, diapers, sleeping bags, not to mention an array of personal hygiene products and other essentials.

On Wednesday, Perry sent a heartfelt message to those in the Bahamas, where he owns a 25-acre island named White Bay Cay as well as a seven-acre island – both of which he bought in 2009, according to The Wall Street Journal.

“To all the incredible people of the Bahamas who have welcomed me and called me an adoptive son, I want you to know that I am watching closely, and as soon as I can, I will be there to do whatever I can to help you rebuild stronger and better,” Perry said in a caption accompanying a tranquil Instagram sunset photo. “You’re not only in my heart and my prayers, you’re in my blood. God bless you. Stay Bahamas strong. The sun will shine agin [sic]. #HurricaneDorian”

In addition to providing Abaco residents with much-needed assistance, the gossip outlet reported, Perry’s seaplane has brought back seven passengers who were in need of medical attention. The passenger list included a number of small children as well as a pregnant woman.

Mexico announces 56 percent drop in number of migrants arriving at US border

The Mexican government announced Friday that the number of migrants coming to its border with the U.S. had dropped by 56 percent over the past three months as the country tries to avert President Trump’s threatened tariffs on Mexico’s exports to its northern neighbor.

Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard, citing data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said the number of migrants apprehended at the frontier in August was 63,989 in August, down from 146,266 in May. Those numbers included people who presented themselves at U.S. ports of entry and were deemed inadmissible.

The Mexican government has deployed more than 20,000 police officers and National Guard troops across the country as part of an aggressive campaign meant to deter Central American migrants from passing through its territory en route to the United States. Ebrard said there had been seven formal complaints of human rights violations involving the National Guard, a relatively low number which he saw as another sign of success.

The U.S. and Mexico agreed in June to a 90-day window to allow Mexico to reduce the flow of migrants from Central America to the U.S. The agreement averted plans by Trump to impose a five percent tariff on Mexican goods in the U.S. that would have increased every month until it hit 25 percent.

Ebrard, is scheduled to meet with U.S. officials at the White House Tuesday to review the Mexican government’s progress.

“We’re showing that the strategy that Mexico put forward has been successful,” Ebrard told reporters. “I don’t expect a tariff threat Tuesday because it wouldn’t make sense.”

While drops in migration are typical during the summer months, officials denied any link between the drops in migration and seasonal trends.

Despite the apparent progress in stopping illegal migration, Ebrard repeated his government’s refusal to become a so-called “third country,’ as Trump has proposed. That would require migrants seeking asylum in the U.S. to apply for such protections in Mexico instead.

“The Mexican strategy is working,” said Ebrard, according to Agence-France Press. “We will not agree to be a safe third country … because it goes against our interests. It is unfair to our country.”

Trump has not yet responded to the latest figures, but on Wednesday he seemed very pleased by Mexican efforts. “I want to thank Mexico, the Mexican government, their great President of Mexico, for helping us,” he told reporters. “They’re helping us in a very big way. Far bigger than anybody thought even possible.”

In addition to stopping U.S.-bound migrants, Mexico said it has been targetting smuggling networks, which it blames for instigating large migrant caravans bound for the U.S. which popped up earlier this year. Authorities have raided freight trains that migrants ride north, and pulled thousands off buses and out of the freight compartments of trucks. Storm chaser Josh Morgerman appeared Friday on “The Story with Martha MacCallum” and spoke about the devastation Hurricane Dorian brought to the Bahamas.

“At the height of this storm you couldn’t see anything. Everything was white. All you heard is crashing. The windows were blowing and were holding furniture against the shutters to keep them from caving in,” Morgerman said.

“We barely made it to the eye, which is the calm center. And then when we came outside, the cars in the parking lot were just thrown every direction, mangled like they’d been in a blender.”

The comments came as the Bahamas death toll from Dorian, which struck the area as a fearsome Category 5 monster, was raised to 30. That figure was only expected to climb in the coming days.

The victims were from the Abaco and Grand Bahama islands, those hit hardest by the storm and its 185 mph sustained winds.

Morgerman talked about how he and others survived the storm.

“I said get the kids away from windows. Wrap them in blankets and we put them under a table. So even if like all hell broke loose inside the room, kids would probably be safe,” Morgerman told MacCallum.

Jason Riley: ‘SharpieGate’ shows press will stress any ‘petty’ controversy to hurt Trump

President Trump proved once again the press will attack him on even the smallest controversy — after what was dubbed, “SharpieGate” materialized, according to Jason Riley.

Nothing was gained from the dayslong back-and-forth between the president and the media over Trump’s claim that Hurricane Dorian could potentially affect Alabama, Riley said Friday on “Special Report.”

“We’ve learned nothing new here,” he said.

“We learned Trump won’t back down from a fight. We learned that there is no controversy that is too petty or stupid for the press to harp on that paints this president in a bad light.”

Earlier on “Special Report,” anchor Bret Baier reported the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) put out a statement on the matter backing up Trump’s claim.

“From Wednesday, Aug. 28, through Monday, Sept. 2, the information provided by NOAA and the National Hurricane Center to President Trump and the wider public demonstrated that tropical storm-force winds from Hurricane Dorian could impact Alabama,” the statement read.

Baier added NOAA said the Birmingham office of the National Weather Service put out a tweet contradicting the president that itself was not completely accurate.

The tweet — which said Alabama, “would NOT see any impacts from Dorian,” itself “spoke in absolute terms that were inconsistent with probabilities from the best forecast products available at the time,” NOAA said.

Prior to the NOAA statement, a Maryland Democratic lawmaker compared Trump’s “SharpieGate” controversy to something seen on “SNL.”

“This is just ‘Saturday Night Live’-style cartoonish behavior by the president of the United States,” U.S. Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., said in a CNN clip played by Baier.
