‘Jeopardy!’ champ breaks 1-day record a second time

“Jeopardy!” contestant James Holzhauer has just broken another record.

The 34-year-old won Wednesday’s episode of “Jeopardy!” with a total of $131,127, topping the record he set last week of $110,914 and making it his 10th straight win. Holzhauer’s total winnings have now accumulated to $697,787.

Last Tuesday, the professional sports gambler from Las Vegas broke the show’s record for single-day cash winnings. The record was previously set by Roger Craig on September 19, 2010, when he took home $77,000 in a single game.

What was even more exciting was that Holzhauer’s prize, $110,914, held a special numerical significance — it’s his daughter birthday. She was born on November 9, 2014 (11/09/14).

“I said all along that I wanted to break Roger Craig’s one-game record and I did it,” Holzhauer said.

After Notre Dame, support for torched black churches swells

Westlake Legal Group after-notre-dame-support-for-torched-black-churches-swells After Notre Dame, support for torched black churches swells NEW ORLEANS fox-news/us/religion/christianity fox-news/us/disasters/fires fnc/us fnc Associated Press article 4d1bfc82-1b01-510d-aa0e-38312a37acd6

The crowdfunding campaign to raise money for three African American churches gutted by arson in Louisiana began a week ago, but donations surged after flames engulfed the roof of Notre Dame cathedral in Paris and the outcry provoked a conversation about the disparate reactions to the tragedies.

Nearly $1 billion had been pledged to the Notre Dame rebuilding effort within hours of Monday’s blaze. The massive attention focused on the French landmark prompted Megan Romer to take note and tweet: “My heart is broken over the loss of Notre Dame. The Catholic Church is also one of the world’s wealthiest entities. If you are going to donate money to rebuild a church this week, I implore you to make it the black churches in St. Landry Parish.”

GoFundMe spokeswoman Aja Shepherd confirmed in an email that giving to the destroyed Louisiana churches increased Tuesday after Romer’s tweet and a challenge from freelance journalist Yashar Ali to his nearly 400,000 Twitter followers.

Other online reminders of the black churches’ plight followed, including this Tuesday tweet from Hillary Clinton: “As we hold Paris in our hearts today, let’s also send some love to our neighbors in Louisiana.”

Donations that totaled about $300,000 nearly a week into the campaign surged to $1.5 million by Wednesday night. The money is to be distributed equally among the three century-old churches to help them recover from the fires intentionally set from March 26 to April 4. White suspect Holden Matthews, 21, has been charged with arson and hate crimes.

Among the calls for more giving to the black churches, there was concern that they were already being forgotten as flames leapt from the roof of Notre Dame.

“It’s terrible what happened to Notre Dame. … But, 3 black churches in LA were purposely burnt down b/c of hate. Let’s not forget to be even more outraged about that,” Twitter user Joe Boyd wrote.

Native American Terrell Johnson, a 19-year-old Columbia University student and member of the Assiniboine Tribe, wondered: “Why are we not as worried about these sites being hurt that are historic to our minority groups, rather than majority groups?”

“It shows how little we are valued. These black churches, the mosque, Native American sites, they are not as valued as Catholicism or Christianity in that aspect, and it’s frustrating,” Johnson said in a Wednesday interview.

But journalist Thomas Chatterton Williams, in a series of tweets, took issue with the notion that concern about Notre Dame could be boiled down to a matter of race.

“It’s a tragedy when black churches + mosques are bombed, burned or vandalized, but of course the world pays more attention to an 800-year-old architectural masterpiece in the heart of a city everyone visits! That’s not white supremacy, and nonwhites who love Paris aren’t dupes,” he wrote.

The Rev. Roderick Greer of St. John’s Cathedral, an Episcopal place of worship in Denver, acknowledges that Notre Dame has higher visibility as a cultural, artistic and religious landmark than the three rural church buildings in Louisiana’s St. Landry Parish.

Still, in a Wednesday interview, he questioned whether white Americans would pay as much attention even if the fire happened at high-profile black churches, such as Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina, Ebenezer Baptist in Atlanta or Birmingham, Alabama’s 16th Street Baptist Church.

“Even if Mother Emmanuel or Ebenezer or 16th Street Baptist Church went up in flames, do white Americans, in particular, have the same emotional and visceral connections that they have to Notre Dame, which is on another continent?” said Greer. “That’s such a telling commentary on the white American imagination that support for black churches lost to arson surged only in the wake of a historic European cathedral fire.”

The Rev. Mason Jack, an officer with the Seventh District Missionary Baptist Association, which includes the burned churches, said Wednesday he was grateful for the surge in donations. He acknowledged that the Notre Dame fire raised consciousness about the Louisiana fires but downplayed any concerns that black churches were being overshadowed or forgotten.

He said publicity surrounding all of the fires helped increase awareness of the need in Louisiana. “Maybe, for some, it was an awakening for them to bring healing and restoration,” he said.

Two Mississippi men admit they took part in a beating captured on video and shared on social media.

WDAM-TV reports 32-year-old Landon McCaa and 28-year-old Tomas Sion Brown told Wayne County Justice Court Judge Charles Chapman on Wednesday that they assaulted an unnamed man.

McCaa says he attacked because he mistakenly believed the victim had insulted his family. McCaa says he was “drinking and out of control” and says he apologized before the victim left his house.

Wayne County Sheriff Jody Ashley says the victim was badly injured, underwent surgery and is recovering at home.

The judge set bails of $500,000 for each man on aggravated assault charges. Both remain jailed.

The court appearance was not a formal guilty plea and the men say they are hiring lawyers.

An 80-year-old Florida man took matters into his own hands when a huge alligator walked into his backyard Tuesday afternoon.

Ed Chapman, from Miami-Dade County, tried to catch the 6-and-a-half-foot gator himself before he had to call in backup from police and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, local outlet 7News reported.

“That thing tugged me all over,” he told the outlet. “Carried me, twisting and fighting me all the way across the property.”

Chapman used his noose pole and got it around the gator’s neck, but the gator fought back.

“He swatted me with his tail and knocked my legs out from under me,” he said, telling the outlet he fell on his side but kept trying to stop the alligator, which fought against Chapman to a pond nearby.

“Then he got his front legs down in the reeds there, and then we went all the way down and he had his face in the water,” he said.

“In the meantime, I called 911,” he added. “I said, ‘I just need some help. I got it contained, but I need some help. I can’t get it out by myself.’”

According to 7News, officials responded within 30 minutes of his call and no one was hurt.

A part of the alligators tail had been cut off in the wild, officials told the outlet. If the gator had its whole tail, it would have been 8 feet long.

However, Chapman, who breeds wolves and keeps about 60 poisonous snakes for venom research, wasn’t particularly fazed, 7News reported.

“I’ve just been around this stuff a long time,” he said.

Democratic presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard told Fox News on Wednesday evening that the Trump administration was “directly undermining” its own attempts to get North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons by pursuing “regime change” in countries like Venezuela and Iran.

The Hawaii congresswoman told “Special Report with Bret Baier” that it has been “impossible for Kim Jong Un to believe them [the administration] when they tell him, ‘Don’t worry. Get rid of your nuclear weapons. We’re not going to come after you.’ … This is not something that can happen overnight, but it begins with ending our regime change wars in other countries [and] ending our regime change efforts as we are seeing in these countries like Venezuela and Iran.”

Gabbard spoke to Fox News shortly after North Korea announced that it had test-fired a “new-type tactical guided weapon.” The totalitarian country has not tested a ballistic missile since November 2017 and U.S. officials told Fox News that Wednesday’s exercise likely was a “short-range” test of a small guided weapon.

MEGHAN MCCAIN: ‘WHEN I HEAR THE NAME TULSI GABBARD, I THINK OF ASSAD APOLOGIST

“We must be willing to meet with those who may be potential adversaries or adversaries in the pursuit of peace and security,” Gabbard said.

“However, this administration is undermining their own efforts by … making it so they’ve got no credibility as they are trying to barter and negotiate with North Korea and get them to denuclearize.”

Gabbard also addressed criticisms of her past visits to Syria, where she has met with that country’s president. When asked by host Bret Baier if she considers Bashar al-Assad to be a war criminal, Gabbard answered: “What’s more important than the question that you’re asking right now is to focus on the costs of this regime change war on our country [and] the trillions of dollars that we’ve spent on waging a regime change war that has undermined our national security, strengthening terrorist groups like ISIS and Al Qaeda … Let’s focus on the costs and the consequences of these regime change wars and work for the interests of our country.”

When asked if she agreed with the intelligence community’s conclusion that Assad’s forces gassed civilians opposed to his rule, Gabbard answered: “What I have said, and I have said this numerous times, is that the Assad government, the Syrian government …  terrorist groups like Al Qaeda and other jihadist groups in Syria have unfortunately used these chemical weapons in this war that’s currently being waged.”

Worldwide pledges of money to restore fire-ravaged Notre Dame cathedral in Paris has prompted a conversation about whether three African American churches recently gutted by arson are being overlooked.

Twitter users took note of the massive attention on the Notre Dame rebuilding effort and urged followers to support the destroyed Louisiana churches.

Some online commenters said the greater focus on Notre Dame was understandable given its history, size and artistic significance. Others said the disparate reactions were examples of traditions and sacred places of racial and religious minorities are undervalued in America.

As concerns were posted on social media, donations to the Louisiana churches surged. A crowdfunding campaign that had totaled about $300,000 soared to $1.5 million by Wednesday night.

Former Watergate Assistant Special Prosecutor Jon Sale said Tuesday that Attorney General William Barr will do whatever “the law requires” to keep sensitive information private on the heels of Thursday’s Mueller report release.

“I think Barr will put his head down, do what the law requires. Grand jury material has to be redacted. Doesn’t matter what anybody in the Congress says,” Sale said on “Your World with Neil Cavuto.”

TRUMP LEGAL TEAM PREPARES MUELLER COUNTER-REPORT ON OBSTRUCTION ALLEGATIONS

“But you anticipate as much as half of it? That seems like a lot but it could be,” Cavuto asked Sale.

“It’s not a matter of quantity. The question is whether or not Mueller can actually tell his findings and Barr still do his job,” Sale responded.

Barr is set to hold a news conference Thursday morning, during which he’ll discuss the long-awaited release of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report on his Russia election meddling inquiry, the Justice Department announced Wednesday.

Barr released a four-page summary last month, which stated that the special counsel found no proof of collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government during the 2016 presidential election.

Democrats have demanded the full, unredacted report and are expected to issue a subpoena.

Sale says the request is destined for the courts, and Barr is “duty-bound” to resist a subpoena and would not negotiate grand jury material.

“There was a case decided one week ago in which the court of appeals in the District of Columbia held that the court does not have inherent authority in the public interests of whatever reasons to release grand jury material.”

Sale added, “So, I think people are just going to have to accept the court ruling.”

North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un on Wednesday watched as his country test-fired a new tactical guided weapon, state-run media reported.

The Academy of Defense Science launched the weapon, The Associated Press reported, citing the Korean Central News Agency.

The rogue regime’s leader reportedly spoke about the implication of the test-fire, saying that “the development of the weapon system serves as an event of very weighty significance in increasing the combat power of the People’s Army.”

The White House told Fox News that they were aware of the report and had no comment. U.S. officials told Fox News that the missile test was likely a “short-range” test of a small guided weapon and not a large ballistic missile.

American intelligence agencies, which normally detect the launch of ballistic missiles worldwide, did not detect any test from North Korea, one official said.

“We’re aware of the reports but I have nothing for you at this time,” said Lt. Col. David Eastburn, a Pentagon spokesman.
