Climate change protesters bring London to halt, demonstrator glues himself to subway train, 300 arrested in 2 days

London was brought to a standstill Wednesday morning after militant climate change protesters cause havoc for a third day in a row, climbing and gluing themselves on subway trains, causing road closures and other disruption, leading to an arrest of nearly 300 people in the past 48 hours.

The protesters calling themselves Extinction Rebellion, which were also responsible for a naked protest in the British Parliament earlier this month, are demanding the government to legally commit to reducing net carbon emissions to zero in the next six years and are willing to go to jail for the cause.

Londoners’ morning commute was particularly disrupted after the protesters climbed on top of a Docklands Light Railway (DLR) train in East London, prompting shutdown or severe delays on numerous underground lines.

The group has been clashing with police officers and blocking traffic in Central London, including near Parliament, since Monday, resulting in at least 290 arrests, the BBC reported.

The scale of the arrests forced the police to reveal that “contingency plans are in place should custody suites become full.”

In addition to furious Londoners, the methods of the protest were criticized by left-wing London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who said that while he believes climate change must be tackled, he was “extremely concerned” about the disruptions.

“It is absolutely crucial to get more people using public transport, as well as walking and cycling, if we are to tackle this climate emergency – and millions of Londoners depend on the Underground network to get about their daily lives in our city,” he tweeted.

“Targeting public transport in this way would only damage the cause of all of us who want to tackle climate change, as well as risking Londoners’ safety and I’d implore anyone considering doing so to think again.”

EXTINCTION REBELLION: ENVIRONMENTAL PROTESTS HALT TRAFFIC

The militant protesters also glued their hands to the train carriages as they touted their success in causing mayhem in the capital, prompting the authorities to turn off the transportation system’s public Wi-Fi to stop them from coordinating actions, the Daily Mail reported.

Some commuters said the protest was “ridiculous” because it only forced commuters to use their cars rather than using the considerably more environmentally-friendly subway.

Transport disruptions reportedly affected 500,000 people over the last few days, while retailers located on the high street say they lost about $12 million in sales in the last two days due to the protests.

Farhana Yamin, a protester who was arrested on Tuesday, apologized to Londoners on BBC Radio 4 but insisted that such actions are justified.

“I totally want to apologize to people using public transport. But at the same time we need to take actions that are disruptive so everyone understands the dangers we’re facing right now,” she said.

“I’m not someone who goes out on to the streets and disrupts and gets arrested for no reason at all. But I feel people should understand that we are at a critical moment in our humanity’s history.”

“We feel deep sorrow and are mourning the loss of Wayne Goddard, one of our own,” Ian Fallis, a spokesperson for Ethnos360, told Fox News. “Please join us in prayer for his family and the people he served and loved in Paraguay.

“We also want to recognize the sacrifice that Wayne made as he followed our Lord in willing service for more than two decades.”

His funeral was held in Paraguay on Sunday and a memorial service is being planned for May in Nebraska. Goddard is survived by his brother and father.

One suspect is in custody in connection with his killing and the investigation is ongoing, according to local authorities.

The Ukrainian Security Service says that it has arrested seven Russian nationals who are believed to have been plotting attacks in Ukraine, but one of the suspects says he is safe in Russia.

Ukraine’s intelligence agency, which is also known as the SBU, said Wednesday that two of the seven men claim to work for Russian intelligence but offered no documentation to back up this claim.

The arrests come days before Ukrainians vote in the presidential election runoff.

One of the men named by the SBU, Timur Dzortov, who is an official in the North Caucasus region of Ingushetia, told Radio Free Europe that he has not been arrested and that he is currently in his office in the city of Magas.

The SBU was not immediately available for comment.

As Lori Loughlin and her husband Mossimo Giannulli prepare to fight the charges against them in the ongoing college admissions scandal, a new report indicates that they’re struggling with the negative public perception.

The couple pleaded not guilty Monday to money laundering and mail fraud. The charges stem from their alleged involvement in the nationwide scam that demonstrated the lengths wealthy, status-seeking parents will go in order to secure their child a spot at a coveted university.

The U.S. trade deficit fell for the second straight month in February, and the politically sensitive deficit in the trade of goods with China narrowed.

The Commerce Department says the gap between the goods and services that the United States sells and what it buys from the rest of the world dropped 3.4% to $49.4 billion in February, the lowest since June. Exports climbed 1.1% to $209.7 billion. Imports rose 0.2% to $259.1 billion.

The goods deficit with China dropped 28.2% to $24.8 billion. Exports to China rose 18.2% to $8.4 billion. Imports from China fell 20.2% to $33.2 billion.

President Donald Trump has imposed tariffs on $250 billion in Chinese imports in a fight over U.S. allegations that China steals technology and forces foreign firms to turn over trade secrets.

Macron’s vow to rebuild Notre Dame cathedral within 5 years unrealistic, some experts say

French President Emmanuel Macron vowed Tuesday that renovations to restore Notre Dame’s iconic 19th-century spire, vaulting and two-thirds of the cathedral’s roof would be completed in time for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

However, some experts fear that the ambitious timeline of five years set by Macron is just too fast and unrealistic.

Even French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe — while supporting the government timeline — acknowledged in an address Wednesday that it would be difficult.

“This is obviously an immense challenge, a historic responsibility,” Philippe said.

Medieval churches took decades, even hundreds of years, to construct – Notre Dame itself took nearly 200 years to become what it was before Monday’s destructive fire.

Even with new technology afforded to construction and restoration crews today, experts predict that restoring the jewel of Gothic architecture would likely take much longer.

Pierluigi Pericolo, in charge of restoration and security at the St. Donatian basilica in Nantes, said it could take two to five years just to secure Notre Dame, given its size.

“It’s a fundamental step, and very complex, because it’s difficult to send workers into a monument whose vaulted ceilings are swollen with water,” he said on France-Info. “The end of the fire doesn’t mean the edifice is totally saved. The stone can deteriorate when it is exposed to high temperatures and change its mineral composition and fracture inside.”

Emily Guerry, a professor of medieval history at the University of Kent in England, told NBC News that a restoration project for the 850-year medieval cathedral will take around two decades to complete – and even then, it wouldn’t be the same.

“This will be the largest, most important cultural renovation project in France for some time to come,” she said.

NOTRE DAME’S DESTRUCTION WAS ‘BOUND TO HAPPEN’ AFTER YEARS OF NEGLECT AND LACK OF UPKEEP, EXPERT CLAIMS

The most critical part of the reconstruction would be replacing – or restoring – the wood structure that held much of the interior of the cathedral together and well as part of the roof destroyed in the blaze.

Known as the “Forest,” the wood roof is made up of centuries-old oak trees that were added to the cathedral in 1220. According to reports, when workers began constructing the roof, they cleared 50 acres of oak trees of threes that were already 300 to 400 years old at the time. That puts the oldest timber in the cathedral at nearly 1,300 years old.

Experts said the roof cannot be rebuilt exactly as it was because, at the moment, France does not have the trees of the size that they were cut in the 13th century.

“In the Middle Ages … it was possible to find huge amounts of beautiful strong oak,” Guerry told CBS News, but overuse led to the destruction of many of Europe’s oak forests. “The ability to find around 3,000 more big, strong trees in the next two decades is going to be tricky.”

This leads many to believe that Macron might be focusing on rallying a mourning country, instead of what is the reality.

NOTRE DAME CATHEDRAL’S 7 MOST ICONIC MOMENTS IN FILM

Peter Fuessenich, who oversees all construction work for the Gothic cathedral in Cologne, Germany, told broadcaster RTL on Tuesday that it could take decades to repair the damage.

“It will certainly take years, perhaps even decades, until the last damage caused by this terrible fire will be completely repaired,” he said, adding that it was “a tragedy with a European dimension.”

Notre Dame’s rector said Wednesday that he will close the cathedral for up to six years.

Bishop Patrick Chauvet acknowledged that the famed monument would close down for “five to six years” as he spoke with local business owners Wednesday.

He acknowledged that “a segment of the cathedral has been very weakened” but did not elaborate which section he was talking about.

HERO PRIEST SAVES PRECIOUS ARTIFACTS FROM NOTRE DAME CATHEDRAL FIRE, BUT THE FATE OF MANY TREASURES REMAINS UNKNOWN

Nearly $1 billion in donations have poured in for the vast restoration of the fire-ravaged cathedral.

Experts have put this in the threshold of realism — estimating the restoration would cost into to the hundreds of millions, although they acknowledge it is too early to be certain.

Some criticism has already surfaced among those in France who say the money could be better spent elsewhere, on smaller struggling churches or workers.

Construction operations around the church were already underway as teams brought in a huge crane and delivered planks of wood to the site Wednesday morning. Firefighters were still examining the damage and shoring up the structure after Monday night’s fire.

Macron is holding a special Cabinet meeting Wednesday dedicated to the Notre Dame disaster, which investigators believe was an accident possibly linked to renovation work.

But Paris prosecutor’s office revealed that investigators have still not been able to look inside the cathedral, as it remains perilous.

Some 30 people have already been questioned in the investigation, which the Paris prosecutor warned would be “long and complex.” Among those questioned are workers at the five construction companies involved in work renovating the church spire and roof that had been underway when the fire broke out.

The cathedral – immortalized in Victor Hugo’s 1831 novel “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” – was undergoing a $6.8 million renovation project when the blaze broke out.

The 12th-century church is home to relics, stained glass and other works of art of incalculable value, and is a leading tourist attraction. Its organ dates to the 1730s and was constructed by Francois Thierry.

When you die ‘you know you’re dead because your brain keeps working’, scientist claims

Westlake Legal Group when-you-die-you-know-youre-dead-because-your-brain-keeps-working-scientist-claims When you die ‘you know you’re dead because your brain keeps working’, scientist claims fox-news/science/natural-science/genetics fox news fnc/science fnc article 5bdaf833-f4e1-577f-bc50-87ad166ee3cf

We know we are dead when we die because our brains keep working to make us aware of what’s happening around us, haunting new research suggests.

Top medical experts have forever been at loggerheads over what happens when humans die, with anecdotal evidence of bright lights and flashes reported by people who have ‘come back’ being the cause of much debate.

However, a new study suggests your consciousness carries on functioning after your heart stops beating and your body movements fail.

CLICK ON THE SUN FOR MORE

This means you are essentially ‘trapped’ inside your dead body with your brain still working, if only for a short time.

Survivors of cardiac arrest were aware of what was going on around them while they were ‘dead’ before being ‘brought back to life’, the study revealed.

More surprising still, there is evidence to suggest the deceased may even hear themselves being pronounced dead by doctors.

Dr. Sam Parnia is studying consciousness after death and examining cardiac arrest cases in Europe and the US.

He says people in the first phase of death may still experience some form of consciousness.

The expert ventured that people who have survived cardiac arrest later accurately described what was happening around them after their hearts stopped beating.

He said: “They’ll describe watching doctors and nurses working, they’ll describe having awareness of full conversations, of visual things that were going on, that would otherwise not be known to them.”

Explaining when a patient is officially declared dead, he said: “It’s all based on the moment when the heart stops.

“Technically speaking, that’s how you get the time of death.”

His study is examining what happens to the brain after a person goes into cardiac arrest – and whether consciousness continues after death and for how long – to improve the quality of resuscitation and prevent brain injuries while restarting the heart.

Unlike the plot in Flatliners, however, when a person is resuscitated they don’t return with a “magical enhancement” of their memories, said Dr. Parnia.

A writer in the U.K. said she’s more motivated than ever to get active and be adventurous after doctors removed a watermelon-sized cyst that had been growing on her ovary. Layla Cummins, who said the cyst caused her to look pregnant, told SWNS that she hadn’t noticed anything was amiss until a few weeks before the growth was detected.

“It was really uncomfortable.” Cummins, 30, told the news outlet. “I couldn’t lay on my front at all. It felt like I had a remote control sticking in my side. I lost my appetite completely and just felt really heavy and tired a lot. I had bursts of pain but it wasn’t really painful at all.”

When she was sent for an ultrasound, Cummins said doctors estimated that the mass had grown to be around 20 centimeters. She underwent surgery on March 27 to remove the mass, which was later measured at 40 centimeters, her right ovary and fallopian tube, which had been damaged by the weight of the cyst.

According to the Mayo Clinic, ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs or pockets in an ovary or on its surface. While many women develop ovarian cysts at some point, most present little or no discomfort and are harmless, and disappear within a few months without requiring treatment. But larger ovarian cysts can cause pelvic pain, fullness or heaviness in the abdomen or bloating. Risks for developing an ovarian cyst include hormonal issues, pregnancy, endometriosis, pelvic infection or previous cysts.

Cummins’ cyst was found to be benign but was left with a large scar across her abdomen. She said she had a “natural curiosity” to see the cyst after it was removed.

“I couldn’t believe it when I saw how big it was, I was so shocked,” she told SWNS. “I’m really pleased I asked for a photo to be taken.”

She said when she weighed herself after surgery, she found she was 10 pounds lighter.

“I feel great now it has been taken out, I feel so much lighter,” she said.

Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Blake Snell, the 2018 American League Cy Young Award winner, was placed on the injured list Tuesday after suffering an unusual mishap at his home.

Snell fractured his toe when he stepped out of his shower and attempted to move a granite item. He called the decision “really dumb.”

“It’s like a three-piece set and this pole that comes up like 2 1/2, 3 feet. Went to move it, I lifted it up and it wasn’t glued to the pole and the pole came crushing down,” he told reporters.

The 26-year-old lefty was 2-1 with a 2.16 ERA and a league-leading 36 strikeouts before he was placed on the injured list.
