Buttigieg tweeted support for Medicare-for-all in resurfaced tweet despite attacking Warren at debate

South Bend, Ind. Mayor Pete Buttigieg attacked Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s Medicare-for-all plan at Tuesday night’s Democratic debate, saying that his Medicare-“for-All-Who-Want-It” plan is “just better.”

He has criticized single-payer at the last few debates, claiming it would “obliterate private plans.”

But in a resurfaced tweet from last year, Buttigieg professed support for it.

“I, Pete Buttigieg, politician, do henceforth and forthwith declare, most affirmatively and indubitably, unto the ages, that I do favor Medicare for all, as I do favor any measure that would help get all Americans covered,” Buttigieg wrote in a February 2018 tweet, responding to whether he supported it.

VOTERS OPPOSE ‘MEDICARE-FOR-ALL’ SYSTEM THAT REPLACES PRIVATE INSURANCE: POLL

A Buttigieg aide Wednesday said that he had not changed his position on Medicare for all, explaining that he supports it as an end goal but he wants to take a “glide path” to get there, The Hill reported.

“What I’ll say is that I’ve laid out a plan that now explains how we’re going to get there, that makes Medicare available to all and at the same time doesn’t do away with private plans,” Buttigieg told a reporter Wednesday who asked if his position had changed.

He added that he doesn’t think private plans need to be gotten rid of to make Medicare available to everyone, according to The Hill.

At the debate, Warren said Buttiegieg’s plan was really “Medicare-for-all-who-can-afford-it.”

Former President Obama aide and “Pod Save America” host Jon Favreau tweeted Wednesday that both Buttigieg and Kamala Harris have changed their positions on Medicare-for-all.

“And there can be perfectly legitimate reasons for that,” he wrote. “The difference is, Harris hasn’t been openly attacking her old position. Trickier to pull off!”

Rebecca Grant: Pence trip to Turkey vital to get cease-fire in Turkish invasion of Syria and repair US-Turkey relations

Relations between the U.S. and our NATO ally Turkey have hit a dangerous new low, following Turkey’s invasion of an area in northeastern Syria that was controlled by Kurdish forces until President Trump ordered a small contingent of American troops withdrawn earlier this month.

Trump’s decision to pull back was not easy, but it looks to have been the most feasible step he could take out of a poor set of military options baked in years ago.

Trump has sent Vice President Mike Pence, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien to Turkey on an important mission to meet with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to try to arrange a cease-fire between Turkish and Kurdish forces in Syria and to patch up U.S.-Turkish relations.

TRUMP WARNS ERDOGAN IN LETTER: ‘DON’T BE A TOUGH GUY. DON’T BE A FOOL!’

Turkey is an important strategic ally that straddles the border between Europe and Asia and controls the access of NATO nations to the Bosporus straits that lead from the Mediterranean to the Black Sea and Russia.

More from Opinion

The straits are narrower than the Hudson River around Manhattan. If a U.S. Navy destroyer wants to tail the Russians into the Black Sea it has to travel through the Bosporus.

Turkey is the bulwark of NATO’s southern flank and home to important U.S. military assets. Sophisticated American missile defense radar watches Iran. And the U.S. Air Force operates a major base at Incirlik.

The New York Times reported this week that up to 50 American nuclear bombs have been stored at the Incirlik base. Storing the tactical nuclear weapons that fit on fighter jets enhanced NATO’s deterrence policy, and showed real trust. The Pentagon won’t confirm or deny the presence of nuclear weapons.

TURKEY HOLDING 50 US NUCLEAR BOMBS ‘HOSTAGE’ AT AIR BASE, REPORT SAYS

For all these reasons, the U.S. can’t afford a complete break in relations with Turkey, despite Turkey’s move into Syria. The idea of going even further and having U.S. troops engage in combat with Turkish forces in Syria to defend the Kurds is almost unthinkable and would have disastrous consequences, driving Turkey into the arms of its neighbor Russia.

This is why the U.S. and European Union nations are issuing stern statements about Turkey’s cross-border operation in Syria, but applying only minor sanctions that amount to a slap on the wrist.

Keep in mind that Turkey has launched several cross-border offensives into Syria since the 1990s to disrupt threats from groups like the PKK – the Kurdish Workers Party, a nasty brew of Marxist-Leninist revolutionaries mashed up with terrorists.

Some Kurds in Syria, Turkey and Iraq have long sought independence – or more recently the more modest goal of greater autonomy – to create a Kurdistan homeland straddling the borders of the three nations. Turkey is determined to prevent that from happening.

Turkey’s cross-border offensives against Kurdish forces in Syria in 2016 and 2018 were barely noticed due to the ongoing battles between the U.S.-allied Kurdish forces and the ISIS terrorist group.

Few Americans are aware of the major Turkish incursions of the 1990s into Syria or the terrorist bombings inside Turkey by Kurdish separatists that prompted the Turkish response. Typically, NATO policy was to turn a blind eye.

Above all, the U.S. military was never supposed to get into Turkey’s border mess.

That all changed in 2014 when ISIS seized territory to create a caliphate in areas of northern Syria and Iraq inhabited by Kurds, driving to within 20 miles of Iraq’s capital of Baghdad.

The crunch came in the fall of 2014 in the Syrian town of Kobani on the border with Turkey. ISIS launched an all-out offensive and Kurds from Iraq, Iran and Syria rallied to defend the town against ISIS.

President Barack Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry dithered, then pounded out an emergency deal to send in massive US airpower and arm the Kurdish People’s Protection Units, known as the YPG, to battle ISIS forces. At one point, Turkey permitted military supplies for Kurds in Kobani to go through Turkish territory.

The U.S. arming of the YPG and other groups had one objective: to defeat ISIS. Some alliances spring from sharing a common enemy. Defeating ISIS was a task that brought in over 70 nations – including Turkey – at its peak.

Success at Kobani had another consequence. Overnight in 2015 – with advice from U.S. special operations forces – the YPG renamed itself the Syrian Democratic Forces and enlisted Arab and other Syrian groups.

“With about a day’s notice they declared they were the Syrian Democratic Forces,” Army Gen. Tony Thomas, former commander of the U.S. Special Operations Command, told an Aspen Institute Forum moderated by Catherine Herridge of Fox News in July 2017. The name change “gave them a little bit of credibility,” he said.

Political demands followed, to the point where “they were asking for things I couldn’t give them,” Thomas recalled.

American policy from Obama to Trump was to defeat ISIS. That was it. As far as I can tell, neither Obama nor Trump ever intended to create a sovereign political entity out of the Syrian Kurdish fighting groups.

In summer 2017, Trump gave Secretary of Defense James Mattis approval to send a few hundred additional U.S. forces into Syria to accelerate the defeat of ISIS. With this help, the Syrian Democratic Forces (the renamed Kurdish fighters) captured Raqqa, the capital of the ISIS caliphate. Mattis began winding down arms sales to the SDF and taking back heavy equipment.

With the ISIS fight on the ground over, Turkey fumed.

“Turkey has legitimate security concerns over insurgency inside its borders,” Mattis said in January 2018. Still, the Trump team juggled the hot potato, continuing cleanup operations on ISIS enclaves along the Middle Euphrates River Valley.

The low point came this summer when Turkey purchased a Russian S-400 air defense system and the U.S. kicked Turkey out of the F-35 fighter jet program.

America never planned to keep forces in Syria or to crash its relations with Turkey. In August, U.S. and Turkish forces were dismantling former YPG sites. About U.S. 50 elite special forces troops were there. A separate bare-bones U.S. military base remained in the south of Syria. France had forces there too, dependent on US logistics and the cover of US airpower deployed to the region.

By the way, Russian propaganda has been stirring in Kurd affairs at least since 1948, according to a CIA report from that year. And we know that now Russian President Vladimir Putin’s trolls are playing up the U.S.-Turkey split to embarrass the U.S. and NATO, which is pretty easy to do this time.

Russia’s glee is all the more reason why the U.S. and Turkey need to find a way forward. Or cede Russia the Black Sea.

You may have heard that the U.S. relationship with the Kurds and Turkey is complicated. Now you know why.

Hannity blasts Democrats and Republicans siding with them over Trump’s Syria withdrawal

Sean Hannity blasted Democrats Wednesday night and Republicans siding with Democrats over President Trump‘s Syria withdrawal.

“What these lawmakers need to keep in mind… he promised to beat the living [beep noise] out of… [the] ISIS caliphate… He removed Obama’s insane, ridiculous democratic rules of engagement that put handcuffs on our troops,” Hannity said on his television program. “And guess what? He bombed the living daylights and beat back the entire caliphate in Syria of ISIS. That’s a promise he made and a promise he kept.”

ON SYRIA, TRUMP ACCUSES GRAHAM OF WANTING ‘TO STAY IN THE MIDDLE EAST FOR THE NEXT THOUSAND YEARS’

Hannity added, “And President Trump also promised to get the United States out of all foreign conflicts. We can’t have endless wars. He ran on this. He got support for this.”

House lawmakers, in a rare show of bipartisan support, on Wednesday overwhelmingly approved a measure opposing President Trump’s decision to withdraw U.S. forces from northern Syria, a military decision that was followed by a Turkish assault on the region.

Hannity made the case against foreign conflicts blaming politicization at home for hurting American troops.

“America’s wars are no longer fought to be won. Instead, eventually, they all get politicized right back here at home,” Hannity said. “Dangerous restrictions are placed on how our brave men and women, our national treasure, our soldiers operate.”

The host warned Republicans that Democrats don’t care about what happens abroad and that they are also responsible for America becoming entangled in wars.

“Republicans, you need to keep something in mind here. Pelosi and her liberal friends, they don’t care about what happens in the Middle East at all,” Hannity said. “And how do we know that? They’re the ones that helped start the wars and then when the going gets tough, they’re the first people to politicize them and put handcuffs on our troops.”

Fox News’ Bradford Betz contributed to this report.

‘Squad’ members not ‘all in’ on Sanders endorsement — at least not yet

Is there dissension in the ranks of “The Squad”?

One day after reports emerged that the group of far-left House Democrats planned to endorse Sen. Bernie Sanders in the 2020 presidential race, it seemed only one of them – Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn. – was officially aboard the Bernie Bus:

As for the others:

— Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez had made no official endorsement but was still rumored to be attending a Sanders rally scheduled for this weekend in Queens, N.Y. – one of two New York city boroughs that include a portion of Ocasio-Cortez’s home district.

BIDEN DISMISSIVE OF OCASIO-CORTEZ’S EXPECTED ENDORSEMENT OF BERNIE SANDERS

— Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., clarified Wednesday that she had not yet endorsed a 2020 presidential candidate – even though CNN and Omar claimed Tlaib had backed Sanders.

— Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., also hadn’t made an endorsement.

Pressley’s camp stressed that while the Squad members support one another in Congress, they don’t necessarily speak with one voice on all issues.

“Ayanna has tremendous respect for her sisters-in-service,” a Pressley spokesperson told Vox. “Ultimately, these political decisions are made as individuals.”

“Ayanna has tremendous respect for her sisters-in-service. Ultimately, these political decisions are made as individuals.”

— Spokeswoman for U.S. Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass.

One factor possibly stalling a Pressley endorsement of Sanders: She hails from the same state as Sen. Elizabeth Warren, so she might not be as eager to oppose a presidential candidate from her home area – the way that Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., for example, backed former Vice President Joe Biden instead of her fellow Californian, Sen. Kamala Harris.

According to Boston.com, Pressley’s ties to the Sanders campaign aren’t as strong as those of Ocasio-Cortez and Omar, with Pressley having backed Hillary Clinton over Sanders in 2016. In addition, Pressley has worked with Warren on legislation in Congress and also has close relationships with Harris and Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., who have been seeking her endorsement, the report said.

Tlaib, meanwhile, hasn’t ruled out a Sanders endorsement down the road, telling the Detroit Free Press she will host the U.S. senator from Vermont in her district later this month – just as she recently did recently with Warren.

“I am looking forward to bringing Senator Sanders to Michigan on Oct. 27 for a tour of our district that will highlight economic justice issues and corporate tax giveaways, and (include) a roundtable with housing justice advocates,” Tlaib said. “I need to know that anyone I choose to endorse will fight for my residents, and I appreciate the opportunity for them to have a dialogue with Sen. Sanders about these critically important issues.”

But regardless of what Tlaib and Pressley ultimately decide to do, the Sanders endorsement by Omar – and rumored endorsement by Ocasio-Cortez – were blows to the Warren campaign, coming on the same night that the senator fended off fierce attacks from fellow Democrats at the party’s presidential debate in Ohio.

As Boston.com noted, Warren has courted Ocasio-Cortez, having lunch with her in March, writing a blurb for Ocasio-Cortez’s entry in Time magazine’s “Time 100” listing, and filming a video with Ocasio-Cortez in which the pair reviewed the final episode of “Game of Thrones.”

Rick Perry says Trump directed him to Giuliani about allege Ukraine corruption

Energy Secretary Rick Perry, whose name has been mentioned in connection with President Trump’s Ukraine dealings, said in an interview published late Wednesday that the president told him to seek out Rudy Giuliani earlier this year to look into possible Ukrainian corruption.

JUDE NAP: TRUMP SAID IMPEACHMENT INQUIRY IS UNFAIR,  IS HE RIGHT?

The Wall Street Journal sat down with Perry for an extensive interview and reported that the spring conversation was a sign of how closely Giuliani — a personal lawyer for Trump — worked on Ukraine policy. Giuliani’s business dealings with the country were reportedly looked at by federal investigators. He denied any wrongdoing.

“Visit with Rudy,” Perry recalled Trump telling him. He told the paper that Trump was not convinced that Kiev “straightened up” its act. Perry told the paper he never heard Trump or Giuliani talk about an investigation into the Bidens.

RICK PERRY DENIES DISCUSSING BIDENS WITH TRUMP OR UKRAINE OFFICIALS: REPORTS

Perry said he remembered the phone call with Giuliani. He said the former mayor of New York city told him the president was “really concerned that there are people in Ukraine that tried to beat him during this presidential election.  He thinks they’re corrupt and … that there are still people over there engaged that are absolutely corrupt.”

He said Giuliani did not make any specific demands during the phone call.

Earlier this week, Fiona Hill, a former senior director for Russian and Eurasian affairs talked about Giuliani’s perceived influence over Trump Cabinet members on Ukraine. She testified that on July 10,  top U.S. officials and Ukrainians had a meeting that touched on investigations into the Bidens. She reportedly said that John Bolton, a former national security adviser for Trump, instructed her to inform a National Security Council lawyer about the meeting.

Trump has denied any wrongdoing and said Democrats are desperate to hurt his presidency.

The New York Times reported that during the meeting, Bolton got into a heated exchange with Gordon D. Sondland, the European Union ambassador. The paper reported that Sondland worked with Giuliani to pressure the Ukrainians to investigate the Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden.

Hill reportedly said Bolton likened Giuliani to a “hand grenade who’s going to blow everybody up.” She said it appeared Giuliani was not working in coordination with the normal foreign policy channels when dealing with Ukraine.

Giuliani has said in the past that he worked in conjunction with the State Department, the Journal reported. He confirmed his conversation with Perry and said there was nothing there that wasn’t already reported on “fifty times.”

California to legalize eating roadkill

California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill last weekend, making it legal to cook and eat roadkill, according to several reports.

The “roadkill bill,” (Senate Bill 395) which goes into effect in 2022, will allow people to salvage and eat animals they unintentionally hit or find on the road in the state, KCAL-TV reported.

Those wanting to eat the roadkill would need to obtain a salvage permit in exchange for information about the animal, where and how it was killed in an effort to eliminate waste of carcasses and to better understand how to make roads safer for drivers and animals.

CALIFORNIA BAN ON NEW FUR PRODUCTS IS FIRST IN US

“When you look at the statistics, the number of injuries and accidents and fatalities, it’s about time,” State Sen. Bob Archuleta, D-Pico Rivera, said, according to KCAL. “If we can save one life, save one animal, I think we’ve done the right thing here.”

University of California, Davis estimates 20,000 deer are killed on California roadways each year, but no department officially tracks the numbers, The Mercury News reported.

“We desperately need systematic data reporting on vehicle collisions with wildlife in California, and CalTrans isn’t going to do it unless directed to by statute,” Brian Nowicki with the Center for Biological Diversity, said, according to The Mercury News.

Under the law, if the animal is still alive the Department of Fish and Wildlife will decide whether or not to put it down.

Opponents of the bill say that it could lead to some drivers purposefully striking animals in the road.

Eating roadkill is currently illegal under state law and “unlawful possession of wildlife” could carry a $6,000 fine and six months in jail, although it is rarely cited, KQED reported.

Just hours after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said they stormed out of a Wednesday meeting with President Trump on Syria, the California Democrat updated her Twitter cover banner with an image of her in a tense exchange with the president.

Supporters applauded Pelosi’s decision to use the photo — which was earlier tweeted out by the president — as an example of standing up to a bully, while critics saw it as an example of the Democrats fighting the president at every turn.

DEMS STORM OUT OF SYRIA MEETING WITH TRUMP: ‘WE HAVE TO PRAY FOR HIS HEALTH’

Trump tweeted the image earlier and captioned it, “Nervous Nancy’s unhinged meltdown!”

The meeting, by all accounts, was unproductive. Schumer and Pelosi told reporters at the White House that Trump “had a meltdown,” and called the speaker either a “third-rate” politician of a “third-grade” politician.

“I pray for the president all the time, and I tell him that — I pray for his safety and that of his family. Now, we have to pray for his health — because this was a very serious meltdown on the part of the president,” Pelosi said later.

As the Democrats walked out, Trump reportedly remarked, “I’ll see you at the polls.”

The bad blood between Trump and Pelosi has been widely reported and with the 2020 presidential election on the horizon, their relationship has deteriorated.

Pelosi most recently criticized Trump’s decision to withdraw U.S. troops from Syria — portraying it as an abandonment of the Syrian Kurds — and has called for a formal impeachment inquiry into an alleged pressure campaign involving Ukraine to investigate the Bidens.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, during an interview after the CNN presidential debate Tuesday night, recalled a man with multiple sclerosis speaking at one of her town halls about his fight for health care — but video from the event showed she apparently got her facts wrong.

CNN commentator Van Jones pressed Warren on her stance of Medicare-for-all, specifically whether she “cares” about people’s freedom to opt out of a government-run health care plan.

“What I care about is that they don’t get pushed out,” Warren responded.

The Massachusetts senator then recalled a town hall attendee she engaged with on the campaign trail.

“I had a young man stand up at a town hall and explain that he had been diagnosed with MS, and his insurance company refused to pay for one of his treatments,” Warren continued. “He had started down the treatment line, and his explanation of it was, there he was, he had insurance, he fights with his insurance company, ‘no no no no no,’ until he finally ends up in the public system.”

“But understand this, he described it as I have now a lesion in my brain that is an inch long that I will carry for all my life… An insurance company, a man who was fully insured, said ‘You know, we’re just not going to pay for this.’”

ELIZABETH WARREN APPARENTLY SCRUBS DNA-TEST ROLLOUT FROM CAMPAIGN SITE, TWITTER

As Mediaite pointed out, she made multiple errors.

The exchange Warren had with the town hall attendee took place last month in New Hampshire, where a man named Dylan said he was diagnosed with MS and described his situation.

However, as Mediaite’s Tommy Christopher explained, Dylan “was not covered by insurance, which was why his treatment lapsed, and he didn’t end up ‘in the public system,’ he was denied Medicare because the government deemed him insufficiently disabled.”

Here is what Dylan told Warren:

“I am someone who really relies on my health insurance a lot more than most people, I live with an invisible illness, multiple sclerosis, and I’ve been denied disability basically because, in their words, they don’t think I’m disabled enough.”

“And because of this I basically have to constantly fight to keep my health insurance, and over the summer I was kicked off, not my mistake, but I had to pay for it, and in about 3 months of me trying to get my insurance back, I was delayed from my disease modified therapy, which now resulted in a new centimeter-size lesion that’s going to follow me for life because someone tried to save a few dollars.”

Cory Booker’s ‘Robert Bork’ reference draws social media ridicule

Twitter users were laughing – maybe even in their sleep — at a comment Cory Booker made during Tuesday’s Democratic presidential debate in Ohio.

At one point, Booker was asked if he would break up tech giants like Facebook and Amazon if he were elected president.

“We need regulation and reform,” the U.S. senator from New Jersey responded. “And antitrust, I mean, Robert Bork right now is laughing in his sleep. We have a reality in this country where antitrust from pharma to farms is causing trouble, and we have to deal with this.”

The reference to Bork laughing in his sleep drew chuckles because the author of “The Antitrust Paradox” — who was nominated to the Supreme Court by President Ronald Reagan in 1987 but failed to win Senate confirmation – died in 2012 at age 85.

“Ummm, someone needs to tell Cory Booker that Robert Bork is not asleep,” one user wrote.

“If Robert Bork is asleep,” another chimed in, “Trump should wake him up and replace RBG with him to own the libs.”

Later in the debate, former Vice President Joe Biden took credit for helping to kill Bork’s Supreme Court nomination.

“When I defeated Robert Bork, I made sure we guaranteed a woman’s right to choose for the better part of a generation,” said Biden, a former U.S. senator from Delaware who chaired the Senate Judiciary Committee at the time.

Booker’s presidential aspirations may soon go the way of Bork’s Supreme Court nomination: A recent Fox News Poll showed more voters viewed Booker unfavorably than favorably – and showed 32 percent of voters saying they either never heard of Booker or had no opinion of him.
