Turkish airstrikes in Syria reportedly target journalist convoy, civilians; at least 9 dead

Fresh airstrikes from Turkey reportedly targeted civilians and a group of foreign reporters in the Syrian border town of Ras al-Ayn, according to monitoring groups and Syrian Kurdish officials.

The Syrian Observatory of Human Rights said the airstrike killed at least nine people – including five civilians on Sunday, while other reports claimed that the convoy included foreign journalists, according to Haaretz.

A spokesman for the Kurdish forces put the death toll at 11 killed and more than 74 injured, but it was not immediately clear how many were civilians.

State-run Anadolu news agency reported Tal Abyad had fallen to a Turkish military offensive on Sunday. Even after the announcement, sporadic gunfire and the occasional mortar round could still be heard in the town, which is on the border with Turkey, while smoke could be seen rising from several points in the town. France 24 reported that at least one journalist was also among the dead, while two French reporters were also injured in the attack. The nationality of the slain journalist was not immediately confirmed.

ESPER DEFENDS US WITHDRAWL FROM NORTHERN SYRIA AS TRUMP DECRIES ‘ENDLESS WARS,’ TOUTS SANCTION ON TURKEY

French reporter Stephanie Perez said on Twitter that she as on the convoy with Kurdish civilians when the airstrikes hit.

“Our team is fine but some colleagues are dead,” she wrote in French.

Hawar News confirmed that one of their journalists was killed in the airstrike, while the northern Syria-based North Press Agency (NPA) reported one of its journalists – named by the agency as Delsoz Yousef – was among the injured.

Images of the attack showed bodies and severed limbs strewn in the street. Some of those killed appeared to be carrying guns. Activists said the gunmen were guarding the convoy.

WHY IS TURKEY ATTACKING THE KURDS? EXPERT BREAKS IT DOWN?

The airstrikes came hours after President Trump ordered all U.S. troops to withdraw from the area to avoid getting caught in the middle of the fast-escalating conflict. The announcement represents a major shift in alliances for Syria’s Kurds after they were abandoned by the U.S., with whom they were longtime partners in the fight against the Islamic State group.

The Syrian government said it would deploy troops along the border with Turkey to help Kurdish fighters fend of Turkey’s invasion of northern Syria, the Kurds said.

The dizzying developments reflected the rapidly growing chaos that has unfolded in the week since Trump ordered U.S. forces in the region to step aside, clearing the way for the Turkish attack on the Kurdish fighters it considers terrorists.

U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper announced Sunday all American troops will withdraw from northern Syria because of the increasing danger posed by the fighting.

“We have American forces likely caught between two opposing advancing armies, and it’s a very untenable situation,” he said on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” He did not say how many would withdraw or where they would go but that they represent most of the 1,000 U.S. troops in Syria.

Esper said that roughly 1,000 troops will be withdrawing from the north of the country. A U.S. official told Fox News that forces will not be leaving the country altogether, but will be moving southward.

MATTIS SAYS ISIS ‘WILL RESURGE’ IN SYRIA FOLLOWING TRUMP’S MOVE TO WITHDRAW US TROOPS

The Turkish military has said it aims to clear Syrian border towns of Kurdish fighters’ presence, saying they are a national security threat. Since Wednesday, Turkish troops and Syrian opposition fighters backed by Ankara have been advancing under the cover of airstrikes and artillery shelling.

Kurdish officials announced they will work with the Syrian government to fend off the Turkish invasion, deploying side by side along the border. Syrian TV said government troops were moving to the north to confront the Turkish invasion but gave no details.

A Syrian Kurdish official and a war monitor also said Syrian government forces were poised to enter Kurdish-controlled towns from which U.S. troops are pulling out, following a deal reached through Russia.

The Kurdish fighters had few options after the United States abandoned them, and it had been anticipated they would turn to the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad and its Russian allies for support.

The Syrian troop movements raise the risk of a clash between Syria and Turkey.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday ruled out any mediation in the dispute with the Kurds, saying Turkey won’t negotiate with “terrorists.” NATO member Turkey views the Syrian Kurdish fighters as terrorists because of their links to the Kurdish insurgency inside Turkey.

The United Nations said more than 130,000 Syrians have fled since the operation began last week. Turkey said 440 Kurdish fighters have been killed since the operation began Wednesday. The SDF said 56 of its fighters have died. Turkey also said four of its soldiers were killed, along with 16 allied Syrian fighters.

Hannah Morse, a reporter for The Palm Beach Post, posted a video of shoppers standing in the parking lot, following the mad dash to escape the area. She wrote that one of the men in the crowd was trampled and needed medical attention, as police donned bullet-proof vests to prepare for the raid.

Several witnesses told WSNV they heard what sounded like gunfire coming from the food court area, and immediately began to run. No one could provide an official account of what actually occurred.

Authorities have instructed bystanders to avoid the mall area until it is cleared and stipulated a specific zone for members of the media covering the story on the ground. The entire town center is now on lockdown.

Georgia DUI suspect evades police, crashes car going 131 mph: police

Georgia police clocked a 33-year-old man going at least 131 mph while driving down a highway Saturday morning before he crashed.

The unidentified suspect evaded police while driving his Volvo down Ga. 400 in Alpharetta before crashing into a concrete median and flipping over a guardrail, according to a Facebook post by the Alpharetta Department of Public Safety.

Police attempted to catch up with the driver, who reportedly accelerated when he saw the flashing blue lights of the officer’s vehicle.

South Carolina shocks No. 3 ranked Georgia in double overtime

The University of South Carolina shocked the unbeaten Georgia Bulldogs, 20-17 in double overtime on Saturday, giving college football one of the more surprising upsets of the 2019 season.

The No. 3 ranked Bulldogs missed a 42-yard field goal as time expired in Athens, Georgia, handing the Gamecocks their biggest upset win since they knocked off No.1 ranked Alabama in 2010.

It’s the first time a top-6 team in the Coaches Poll has lost this year.

It was South Carolina’s first win over a ranked opponent in three years and the first time an SEC team was defeated by an unranked team this season, according to USA Today.

The Gamecocks won despite being limited to their third-string quarterback, Dakereon Joyner, who entered the game after starter Ryan Hilinski was injured in the third quarter.

Hilinski wore the No. 3 jersey to honor his brother Tyler who committed suicide on January 16, 2018.

Georgia QB Jake Fromm turned the ball over four times, while kicker Rodrigo Blankenship missed a kick in double overtime to give the victory to South Carolina. Gamecocks kicker Parker White had connected on a 24-yard field goal earlier in the second overtime to give South Carolina a three-point lead.

South Carolina head coach, Will Muschamp said the Gamecocks have been resilient in dealing with adversity so far this season.

Poland’s ruling conservative party poised to win re-election

Poland’s ruling Law and Justice party, buoyed by its popular conservative platform and generous social spending, was widely expected to win Sunday’s election, which is regarded as one of the country’s most momentous since the fall of communism 30 years ago.

More than 30 million voters were choosing lawmakers in the 460-seat lower house of parliament, the Sejm, and in the 100-seat Senate.

Law and Justice is the first party since the fall of communism to break with the austerity of previous governments, whose free-market policies took a moribund communist economy and transformed it into one of Europe’s most dynamic.

Critics fear that four more years for the party will reverse the democratic achievements of this Central European nation, citing an erosion of judicial independence and of minority rights since the party took power in 2015.

Polls over the past week gave Law and Justice between 40 percent and 45 percent support. The second-strongest force, the centrist pro-EU Civic Coalition, whose biggest party is Civic Platform, polled at around 25 percent of the vote. An alliance of three left-wing parties has polled between 10 percent and 15 percent.

Turnout at 5 p.m. local time was 45.94 percent, or almost 7 percentage points higher than at the same time in the 2015 election, according to the State Electoral Commission. The highest turnout of above 50 percent was in Warsaw and Poznan, cities traditionally supporting Civic Platform.

Law and Justice’s overhaul of the judicial system has given the party unprecedented power over Poland’s courts. The EU has repeatedly warned that the rule of law is threatened and has sanctioned the country, preventing some of the changes, but not all.

Exit polls will be announced when the polls close Sunday at 9 p.m. local time but official results are not expected until early in the week.

Collins: Schiff wants interviews kept secret because Dems ‘can’t win this in the public eye’

House committees are expected to continue their series of closed-door transcribed interviews as part of their impeachment-related investigation of President Trump this week, and Rep. Doug Collins, R-Ga. claims the secrecy is due to the Democratic majority not wanting the public to know that the testimony does not support their narrative.

Earlier this month, former U.S. Special Envoy to Ukraine Kurt Volker, Intelligence Community Inspector General Michael Atkinson and former U.S. envoy to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch went before Democrat-led committees to face questions about President Trump and whether he pressured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky into helping investigate Joe and Hunter Biden. Both sessions took place in closed-door settings. U.S. Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland is re-scheduled for this Thursday after his previous appearance was shut down by Trump.

TOP DIPLOMATS TO TESTIFY BEFORE CONGRESS DESPITE OPPOSITION FROM STATE DEPT., WHITE HOUSE

“They said we can’t win this in the pyblic eye, so we’re going to take it behind closed doors,” Collins said about Democrats on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures.”

Collins specifically called out House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., accusing him of controlling the narrative by keeping proceedings under wraps and selectively leaking information.

“And so, in the last few days, they have taken it behind closed doors, and Adam Schiff — who has trouble telling the truth, much less spelling it, but he’s a very good leaker,” Collins said, “so what they did is take it behind closed doors, have testimony that I’ve heard from folks who were in the room that said these transcripts should be released completely because they defeat the entire narrative, but as long as he can keep it behind closed doors, then they leak out to the American people only what they want to leak out and this is why you have seen this progression at this point.”

KLOBUCHAR, BOOKER RULE OUT RECUSING THEMSELVES FROM TRUMP IMPEACHMENT TRIAL

Schiff drew criticism from Trump and other Republicans after a recent hearing, during which he portended to read from a transcript of Trump’s July 25 call with Zelensky, only to make up a conversation that was not supported by the facts and was far more egregious than what had taken place.

Schiff admitted that what he said was false, but defended it as being meant as parody. He and other Democrats are looking into the phone call, which inspired an anonymous whistleblower complaint and a second whistleblower coming forward. The complaint accused Trump of pressuring Zelensky to assist in the Biden investigation by using military aid as leverage.

Republicans also attacked Schiff for not being forthcoming with the contact his staff had with the whistleblower before the complaint was filed. On Sunday, Schiff admitted during an interview on CBS’ “Face The Nation” that he “should have been much more clear.”

Two Florida men accused of illegally dumping human waste

Two men in Florida have been charged with illegally dumping raw sewage down manholes on at least three occasions, with some of the sewage spilling down sidewalks, streets and on grass, according to police.

Thomas Fucarile, who owns Advantage Rooter, a waste company in suburban West Palm Beach, and his driver Lavoris Grisby were charged with three counts of illegal dumping of human waste on Friday, West Palm Beach police said.

A witness recorded three incidents on his cellphone, including one alleged incident which reportedly shows a worker pump out community septic tanks at a condo and repeatedly empty it into a city manhole, according to The Palm Beach Post.

The truck held more than 3,000 gallons of sewage, weighing about 15 tons, according to a police report. The witness, who went to police on October 4, reportedly said some of the raw sewage spilled everywhere and could be smelled a block away.

Thomas Fucarile, who owns Advantage Rooter, a waste company in suburban West Palm Beach, and his driver Lavoris Grisby (right) have been charged with three counts of illegal dumping of human waste on Friday, West Palm Beach police said. (Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office)

The three incidents were recorded in July, August and September, the newspaper reported, adding that the city’s water supply was not harmed.

The company said it used city manholes because a lift station was clogged, adding that “someone at the county” had given permission, without providing details or documentation, according to The Post.

The newspaper reported that police went to a supervisor at Palm Beach County Utilities on Tuesday who said, permission was “absolutely not” granted and added that the waste company recently had changed its name from Culpepper Plumbing. West Palm Beach city officials reportedly told investigators that the company had several violation reports.

Fucarile, 68, and Grisby, 65, were released hours after they were booked on Friday, according to the news outlet.

Fucarile’s lawyer said he will fight the charges. The newspaper said a call to a number listed to Grisby was not returned.

Man tried walking 351 miles to have sex with deputy he thought was 14-year-old girl, prosecutors say

A man was arrested after allegedly walking hundreds of miles from Indiana to Wisconsin to have sex with a teen — who turned out to be an undercover sheriff’s deputy.

Tommy Lee Jenkins, 32, recently moved from Oshkosh, Wis., to Whitestown, Ind., and on Oct. 1 started chatting with someone named “Kylee,” who he thought was a 14-year-old girl living in Neenah, Wis., with her mom, federal prosecutors said.

Jenkins allegedly “began demanding sexually explicit photographs from ‘Kylee’ and making plans to engage in sexual activity,” according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Wisconsin.

When he was rejected, authorities claim Jenkins decided to walk to her — 351 miles away. While he walked, “Jenkins continued to engage ‘Kylee’ in sexually explicit conversations and updated her as to his current location.”

The 32-year-old told the teen he wanted to have 500 children with her in one year, the Oshkosh Northwestern reported, citing court documents.

As it turns out, “Kylee” was not a 14-year-old — but a Winnebago County sheriff’s deputy working with the Internet Crimes Against Children task force.

When Jenkins arrived in Winnebago County on Oct. 10, he was arrested by local authorities and the FBI.

“Our nation faces an epidemic of child sexual abuse, with the Internet making it too easy for predators to communicate with children across the country,” U.S. Attorney Matthew Krueger said in a statement. “The Justice Department is committed to working with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to prosecute child sexual abuse aggressively.”

Jenkins was charged with using a computer to attempt to persuade, induce or entice a minor to engage in unlawful sexual activity. He faces a lifetime prison sentence if convicted and, according to online records, remains jailed at the Brown County Jail in Wisconsin.
