California dive boat fire was ‘freak accident,’ underwater cinematographer says

An underwater cinematographer said on “Fox & Friends” Wednesday that a California boat fire that killed dozens of scuba diving enthusiasts would not dissuade him from traveling on the same type of boat.

“This was a terrible accident, but it was a freak accident. That’d be like saying if you knew someone in a car accident, you’d never drive in a car again,” said Jonathan Bird, who has traveled on many boats similar to the one involved in the Monday morning tragedy.

Santa Barbara County officials announced Tuesday that the search for survivors had been suspended; 34 people were presumed dead. The bodies of 20 people – 9 men and 11 women – were recovered, and divers found at least four others in the hollowed wreckage. The identification process will require DNA testing, investigators said.

HURRICANE DORIAN’S PATH: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

A total of 39 people were aboard the Conception when it caught fire off the coast of Santa Cruz on the final day of the Labor Day weekend expedition.

25 BODIES FOUND AFTER CALIFORNIA SCUBA DIVING BOAT FIRE, COAST GUARD SAYS

The Conception’s captain, Jerry Boylan, made a mayday call to a Coast Guard dispatcher around 4 a.m. on Monday.

Ventura County firefighters were able to reach the burning vessel within 15 minutes but struggled to extinguish the scorching boat as it continued to erupt in flames. The boat’s owner, Truth Aquatics, did not respond to a request for comment.

Bird said there was no way the passengers who were trapped in the cabin below deck were locked in their rooms. He said there would typically be a staircase leading to the deck, as well as an escape hatch for the guests to leave their rooms.

“There isn’t even a door you could lock if you wanted to,” he said, emphasizing that boats are designed this way because guests would be less likely to become seasick below deck.

“These are how most live-aboard are built. The passengers, the ones who are paying money to be there, are put in the most comfortable place on the boat.”

Fox News’ Hollie McKay contributed to this report.

Maryland grandma who gave birth to daughter’s triplets inspired foundation that funded $800,000-worth of infertility procedures

A Maryland woman who at the age of 55 carried triplets for her daughter inspired a foundation that helps couples who are struggling to get pregnant afford fertility procedures, according to a report.

Camille and Jason Hammond tried for years to get pregnant and went through six rounds of vitro fertilization (IVF) before finally asking Camille’s mother to help them give her a grandchild.

ILLINOIS BABY HAS 5-INCH GROWTH REMOVED FROM NECK HOURS AFTER BIRTH

The couple launched the Tinina Q. Cade Foundation, named after Camille’s mom, in 2005, a year after their children’s birth. This year the fund announced it has given out more than $800,000 in grants to 113 families struggling to get pregnant since its inception, according to a report by Atlanta’s WXIA-TV.

“Even despite all that we had, we still struggled with infertility. It almost broke us as a family,” Camille said. “It’s great that we overcame, but there are so many that don’t have all these advantages that we have.”

Camille has endometriosis, a condition that causes the uterine lining to grow outside the uterus, which makes it difficult to become pregnant. After years of trying naturally and undergoing six rounds of in vitro fertilization, doctors told the couple their best chances of having a child were either adoption or asking a surrogate to carry the couple’s child for them.

“We were devastated,” Camille said. “The prospect of another woman that you don’t know carrying that baby, that’s really an awful thought.”

Camille’s mother, Tinina Cade, eventually came forward and agreed to receive IVF at the age of 55, so that her daughter and son-in-law would be able to trust their surrogate would stay healthy throughout the pregnancy.

“I saw my beautiful daughter, who was always a happy spirit, become sad,” Cade said. She said the day she told her daughter she was pregnant was “one of the best days, highly emotional.”

Even though she was post-menopausal, doctors determined she could still carry a fertilized egg. On the second round of the fertilization procedure, she found out all three embryos survived and she was carrying triplets. Cade carried the triplets for seven months before doctors delivered her grandchildren via Caesarean section in December 2004, Atlanta’s WXIA-TV reported.

“I saw these beautiful little people and they were ours, we had overcome,” Camille said.

Nadal aims to put one of the Big Three in US Open semifinals

Rafael Nadal will try to make sure the U.S. Open has one member of the Big Three in the semifinals.

With Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic out of the tournament, Nadal is the only major champion left on the men’s side as he faces No. 20 Diego Schwartzman on Wednesday night.

Nadal, who has won three of his 18 major titles at Flushing Meadows, is playing in his 40th career Grand Slam quarterfinal. He is 7-0 against Schwartzman.

No. 13 Gael Monfils of France and No. 24 Matteo Berrettini meet in the other quarterfinal.

The women’s quarterfinal matchups are No. 13 Belinda Bencic against No. 23 Donna Vekic, and 15th-seeded Bianca Andreescu against No. 25 Elise Mertens. Mertens is the only one of the four who has been beyond this stage of a Grand Slam.

US forward Jayson Tatum to miss 2 games with ankle sprain

U.S. forward Jayson Tatum of the Boston Celtics will miss at least the Americans’ next two games at the World Cup because of a sprained left ankle.

Tatum will not play against Japan on Thursday or in the Americans’ first second-round game on Saturday. He will be re-evaluated Monday, the same day the Americans play their final second-round matchup.

Tatum — one of many heroes for the U.S. in its dramatic 93-92 overtime win over Turkey on Tuesday — got hurt on the Americans’ final possession of the game, twisting his ankle on a drive into the lane. Tests performed Wednesday confirmed the sprain.

There’s not much at stake for the U.S. against Japan. The Americans have already clinched the top seed out of Group E and are assured of playing a pair of second-round games in Shenzhen, China, on Saturday and Monday. If the Americans keep advancing, the quarterfinals would be on Sept. 11, semifinals on Sept. 13 and the title game on Sept. 15.

Tatum has started each of the Americans’ two games so far at the World Cup.

He was fouled while taking a 3-pointer with one-tenth of a second in regulation and the U.S. down by two on Tuesday. Tatum made the first free throw, missed the second and made the third to tie the game and force overtime.

“I wasn’t nervous,” Tatum said of being in that spot. “I’m still (mad) I missed the second one. Then I wouldn’t have got hurt. We won. Glad I was able to help give us some extra time and extend the game. As long as we win, that’s all that I care about.”

He had more heroics in overtime, corralling a loose ball off a missed Turkey free throw with about 8 seconds left and the U.S. trailing by one. He dribbled downcourt, found Khris Middleton with a bounce pass that allowed the Milwaukee forward to get to the rim and get fouled. Tatum got hurt shortly after making that pass, falling in the lane.

“I think I just slipped and fell the wrong way,” Tatum said.

Middleton made both free throws, and the U.S. escaped.

Celtics coach Brad Stevens, speaking to reporters in Boston a couple hours after Tatum got hurt, said it didn’t sound like the injury was serious. Boston has four players on the U.S. roster and six players at the World Cup overall, and Stevens said he had no reservations about them participating and risking injury.

“At the end of the day, they’re going to be playing 5-on-5 other places,” Stevens said. “I don’t think you can get any better prep than doing what those guys are doing, playing in environments where everybody is rooting against them, tight games.”

James Carafano: Will Hurricane Dorian spell disaster for Trump?

As a massive hurricane creeps up on the East Coast, Washington’s windbags are in full voice. But what politicians say in an emergency matters little, and what Washington does when calamity strikes matters far less than most people imagine.

The Trump era has witnessed repeated instances of the president’s political opponents seeming eager for disaster to strike. After all, any disaster offers the opportunity to point fingers and either decry a lack of presidential leadership or blame a presidential policy.

In recent months, some Trump critics seemed to be positively rooting for the nation to either stumble into recession or be plunged into a war with Iran. Frustrated on those fronts, they now appear to be pinning their hopes on Hurricane Dorian.

HURRICANE DORIAN: NASA TEAM SET TO RIDE OUT STORM AT KENNEDY SPACE CENTER

We’ve been down this weather-beaten road before. In 2017, when hurricanes slammed the U.S., Trump was being blamed for a poor response even before they made landfall. After Texas and Florida came through the storms in an orderly fashion, the criticism was largely muted.

More from Opinion

But Puerto Rico was another story. Hurricane Maria devastated the island, and Trump’s opponents followed the same playbook used against President George W. Bush in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina — they tried to blame the problems on Trump rather than the storm.

Trump weathered these attacks well, in part because many of the accusations were just way over the top. It was quickly evident that the biggest problems in response had nothing to do with the administration. Response logistics were complicated by the inescapable fact that Puerto Rico is an island located more than 2,000 miles from the U.S. mainland.

The recovery was further complicated by the fragility of the existing infrastructure and the lack of good local governance directing the response. We were reminded of this last point last month, when public protests over the outrageous abuses of the government and its incompetence forced the governor to resign. It was reminiscent of the aftermath of Katrina, which saw the Louisiana governor voted out of office and the mayor of New Orleans sent to jail for corruption.

None of these conditions is likely to be repeated as Hurricane Dorian works its way along the East Coast. While all the focus is on the president, it is worth recalling that, in natural disasters, the federal government’s role is to backstop the state and local response, not supplant it.

Danger to life is greatest during — and immediately after — disaster strikes. That’s what makes local, on-scene responders the most crucial to a successful recovery.

They know the people, the territory, the area’s physical assets and limitations, and the capabilities of local social, civic and business organizations. This knowledge allows them to accurately assess and prioritize recovery needs and efficiently organize and dispatch the resources.

In a large-scale catastrophe, the federal government can and should fall in with assets, but most of that help is to backstop the needs of state governments and local communities — often providing and deploying those assets at their direction. And, of course, the U.S. Coast Guard always plays an important role in responding to sea storms. During Katrina, for example, Coast Guard assets rescued more than 3,000 people.

But the people who are usually first-on-site after a disaster and the ones who do the real heavy-lifting of recovery are usually those who live in the community. Faith-based groups are particularly prone to jump in to help their fellow citizens — and they do outstanding work. After Katrina, surveys found that faith-based organizations were rated as the most responsive and effective recovery workers by far.

For now, it looks like Dorian will soak Florida and then maybe take a swing at North and South Carolina. What these places all have in common is good infrastructure, solid governance, disaster-response experience, and many strong, resilient communities. Odds are they can take what Dorian can dish out.

As for the White House, the reality is that the federal government has likely already done most of the important stuff already: pre-positioning assets, anticipating requirements, and coordinating with the state governments to get ready.

In World War II, the big challenge for Gen. Dwight Eisenhower was working out all the steps he had to take before D-Day. Similarly, the real challenge for Washington comes before the storm hits the beach. After that, the critical work of saving lives and property is up to the men, women, neighbors and responders in harm’s way.

A Scottish court says British Prime Minister Boris Johnson‘s planned suspension of Parliament is lawful.

The closely watched decision was revealed Wednesday. It is the first of several challenges to Johnson’s maneuver that gives lawmakers little time to prevent Britain from crashing out of the European Union without an agreement on Oct. 31.

As Dorian approaches, millions in Florida, Georgia and Carolinas urged to evacuate; Bahamas death toll rises

Good morning and welcome to Fox News First. Here’s what you need to know as you start your Wednesday…

Hurricane Dorian weakens as Florida braces for impact; Bahamas devastated, death toll rises
Florida began to feel the presence of a weakened, but larger Hurricane Dorian as it churned east of Cape Canaveral Tuesday night after devastating the Bahamas. With maximum sustained wind speeds of 110 mph, Dorian, now a Category 2 storm, packs a “life-threatening” storm surge, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said. While the storm had been downgraded, forecasters warned its system had grown in size. The storm advisory warned Florida’s central Atlantic coast could see damage as Dorian charges northward.

Officials urged over two million people in Florida, Georgia and North and South Carolina to evacuate. Dorian is forecast to move near or over the coast of South Carolina and North Carolina Thursday through Friday morning, producing 5 to 10 inches of rainfall resulting in dangerous flash floods.

Dorian was the most powerful hurricane ever to hit the Bahamas. It devastated the island as a Category 5 storm and killed at least seven people in its wake over the span of several days, officials said. However, the full scope of Dorian’s damage in the Bahamas remains unknown. Officials are bracing for apocalyptic carnage and expect the death toll in the Bahamas to rise dramatically. Coast Guard releases chilling footage of deadly scuba boat fire
The U.S. Coast Guard released aerial footage Tuesday of the early morning Labor Day boat fire that left 34 dead after passengers were likely being trapped while sleeping below deck. The video was taken by a Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter.  The crew was responding to the Conception boat fire off Santa Cruz Island off the Southern California coast early Monday. The video shows billowing clouds of white smoke and flames engulfing the 75-foot vessel. The boat appears to tip backward as it begins to sink. Rescue boats can also be seen making their way toward the boat, according to the footage posted by Fox 11 Los Angeles. A total of 39 people were aboard the Conception. Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown said Tuesday that the fire spread rapidly and flames blocked both exits of the lower deck, where passengers and one crew member were sleeping in tight quarters.

Inspector general report reveals more evidence Comey used transition briefings to gather intel on Trump team
James Comey immediately shared details from a post-election briefing for then-President-elect Donald Trump with the FBI’s Russia team, according to the recently released inspector general’s report on the former bureau director’s actions — the latest indication that traditional transition briefings were used to gather intel on the incoming president and his team for the ongoing FBI investigation.

The long-awaited report from Inspector General Michael E. Horowitz last Thursday said Comey violated bureau policies by drafting, leaking and retaining his memos documenting private discussions with the president. The report also revealed new details about the FBI director’s actions at that time, including how Comey and his top deputies went to great lengths to confront Trump at a Jan. 6, 2017 meeting at Trump Tower with the salacious and unverified accusations contained in the dossier, which had been funded by Democrats and drafted by British ex-spy Christopher Steele.

Hong Kong’s Lam will formally withdraw extradition bill: reports
Carrie Lam, Hong Kong’s embattled chief executive, will formally withdraw the controversial extradition bill that sparked months of tense protests that played out on an international stage, according to reports. The bill allowing Hong Kong residents to be sent to mainland China for trials sparked massive protests that have rocked the city since June. Lam has suspended the bill, but protesters want it entirely withdrawn. Pro-government lawmaker Michael Tien confirmed he was notified on Tuesday of the meeting, which includes members of the National People’s Congress and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. He said he has no details of the agenda.

Churchill’s grandson could face expulsion from UK’s Conservative Party for defying Boris Johnson in Brexit vote
Winston’s Churchill’s grandson, Nicholas Soames, will reportedly be expelled from the United Kingdom’s Conservative Party for defying Prime Minister Boris Johnson over a key Brexit vote Tuesday. Soames and 20 other Conservative members of Parliament voted to force a vote to delay Brexit, according to the Washington Post. It was a major blow to Johnson, prompting him to call for a new general election.

A measure for a new election would need a two-thirds majority in Parliament. Last week, Queen Elizabeth approved Johnson’s request to suspend Parliament until two weeks before the Oct. 31 Brexit deadline, which critics have said doesn’t give enough time to avoid a No-Deal and disorderly exit from the European Union.

‘Will & Grace’ star backtracks, says he doesn’t support ‘blacklists’ after calling to out Trump donors
“Will & Grace” star Eric McCormack is walking back his comments after he and his co-star Debra Messing were widely criticized after calling for Trump donors in Hollywood to be outed. Last week, McCormack responded to a report about an upcoming fundraiser being held in Beverly Hills in honor of President Trump’s reelection campaign by requesting a follow-up of all the attendees. “Hey, @THR, kindly report on everyone attending this event,” he wrote, “so the rest of us can be clear about who we don’t want to work with. Thx,” McCormack tweeted.

On Tuesday, however, McCormack attempted to clarify his stance, telling his followers on Instagram that he doesn’t support “blacklists.” Messing agreed with the sentiment. Click here to read more.
