GOP lawmakers slam Chinese Communist Party’s ‘appalling record of repression’ on 70th anniversary

Republican members of Congress released scathing statements Tuesday condemning the Chinese Communist Party on the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., and Rep. Mike Gallagher, R-Wis., said the Chinese government’s birthday was “not a day for celebration,” as they said the a one-party state has “deprived its citizens of their fundamental human rights and human dignity.”

“From the tens of millions who starved to death during Mao Zedong’s Great Leap Forward, to the students who stared down tanks in Tiananmen Square, to the millions of Uighurs who have languished in concentration camps, and now to the courageous people of Hong Kong,” Cheney and Gallegher said, “the [Chinese Communist Party’s] appalling record of repression is clear.”

LIZ CHENEY ACCUSES RAND PAUL OF PUTTING TERRORISTS ‘FIRST’ AFTER HE SAYS SHE’S ‘WARMONGERING’

The representatives’ statement, which calls on Americans “to ensuring that the Chinese Communist Party is left in the ash heap of history,” draws a stark contrast to the laudatory tweet marking the occasion sent Tuesday morning by President Trump.

“Congratulations to President Xi and the Chinese people on the 70th Anniversary of the People’s Republic of China!” Trump wrote.

Though Trump has traded tariffs with Chinese President Xi Jinping, he has often been criticized for being too soft on international strongmen. In a recording of a 2018 speech to GOP donors, which was obtained by CNN, Trump joked about Xi’s status as president for life after the Comunist party removed term limits for its leader.

HONG KONG VIOLENCE LEAVES 1 SHOT BY POLICE AS CHINA MARKS 70TH ANNIVERSARY OF COMMUNIST PARTY

“He’s now president for life. President for life. And he’s great,” Trump said to laughter. “And look, he was able to do that. I think it’s great. Maybe we’ll have to give that a shot someday.”

Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., also denounced the Chinese government on the 70th anniversary of the republic’s founding.

“To see the price of the [People’s Republic of China’s] anniversary celebration, look no further than what’s happening in Hong Kong: a ceaseless war against those who wish to live in freedom,” Cotton said. “From the Great Leap Forward to the Cultural Revolution to the camps in Xinjiang today, it has been a ghoulish 70 years of Chinese Communist Party control.”

Tuesday’s anniversary comes as pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong, who regularly carry American flags, call on Trump to help “liberate” them from Bejing’s rule and Taiwan tries to fend off China’s efforts to peel away its diplomatic allies.

Jussie Smollett slams comparison to 12-year-old girl who lied about classmates cutting her dreadlocks

Jussie Smollett hit back at a social media user who compared his alleged hate crime hoax to a 12-year-old girl who recently admitted she made up a story about how her dreadlocks were cut off by her white schoolmates.

Journalist Derrick Jackson posted a comment on Instagram that read, “Jussie really is a trendsetter,” insinuating that the young girl, Amari Allen, took a page from Smollett’s alleged book of lies.

She claimed three white boys cut her hair while on the playground at the Immanuel Christian School in Springfield, Va., but later confessed the incident didn’t really happen after security footage couldn’t corroborate her story.

JUSSIE SMOLLETT’S ALLEGED HATE CRIME ATTACK: A TIMELINE OF EVENTS

“With all due respect brother, y’all can clown me all you want but my story has actually never changed and I haven’t lied about a thing,” Smollett, 37, responded on social media.

“Y’all can continue to be misinformed, internalized sheep, who believe what actual proven liars feed you or you can read the actual docs. Either way, Imma be alright. I know me and what happened. You don’t. So carry on. All Love,” he added.

In January, Smollett told police he was attacked by two masked men as he was walking home from a Chicago Subway sandwich shop at approximately 2 a.m. The openly gay actor alleged that the masked men beat him, taunted him with homophobic and racial slurs and yelled, “This is MAGA country.”

CHICAGO POLICE UNIONS CALL FOR COOK COUNTY STATE’S ATTORNEY KIM FOXX TO RESIGN FOLLOWING JUSSIE SMOLLETT CASE

In February, police determined that Smollett’s masked assailants were brothers Abel and Ola Osundairo, who trained Smollett and worked with him on “Empire.” Authorities also identified the brothers as those on surveillance video purchasing the rope that was reportedly hung around Jussie’s neck during the alleged attack.

It was determined by police in late March that the former “Empire” star staged the racist hate crime he endured while shooting the show in Chicago.

CHICAGO POLICE TOLD NOT TO ‘INVESTIGATE’ JUSSIE SMOLLETT WEEKS BEFORE CHARGES DROPPED, DOCUMENTS REVEAL

Smollett was charged with filing a false police report, but those charges were dropped by Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx a few weeks later.

The entertainer has maintained his innocence and still insists that the attack happened.

After Allen admitted the truth, her family issued an apology but says that she has been a victim of bullying at the school.

“To those young boys and their parents, we sincerely apologize for the pain and anxiety these allegations have caused,” the family said in a statement. “To the administrators and families of Immanuel Christian School, we are sorry for the damage this incident has done to trust within the school family and the undue scorn it has brought to the school.”

The school also responded:

“While we are relieved to hear the truth and bring the events of the past few days to a close, we also feel tremendous pain for the victims and the hurt on both sides of this conflict. We recognize that we now enter what will be a long season of healing.”

Las Vegas shooting motive remains elusive as officials, survivors gather to mark 2-year anniversary

Two years have now passed since the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history – yet the biggest question about it remains unanswered.

The American public is still in the dark as to why Las Vegas gunman Stephen Paddock opened fire on concertgoers outside the Mandalay Bay resort on Oct. 1, 2017, killing 58 and wounding hundreds more.

The FBI’s agents and behavior specialists spent more than a year investigating the attack. Officials released clips of nearly 1,200 officer body camera videos, many hours of 911 audio recordings and dozens of handwritten and transcribed witness accounts.

But 730 days later, no one can definitively say what Paddock’s motive for the massacre was.

MGM RESORTS TO CONVERT LAS VEGAS SHOOTING SITE INTO COMMUNITY CENTER, MEMORIAL

Paddock acted alone when he planned and carried out the attack, Aaron Rouse, the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Las Vegas office, said in January. The 64-year-old fatally shot himself as police arrived into his hotel suite.

Las Vegas police closed their investigation in August 2018 without establishing a motive.

Paddock was a retired postal service worker, accountant and real estate investor who owned rental properties and homes in Reno and in a retirement community more than hour’s drive from Las Vegas. He also held a pilot’s license and liked to gamble tens of thousands of dollars at a time.

POLICE OFFICER WHO ‘FROZE’ DURING 2017 MASSACRE IS FIRED BY DEPARTMENT

Police characterized him as a loner who had no religious or political affiliations, despite reports he had ranted about the Federal Emergency Management Agency “camps” set up after Hurricane Katrina and deadly standoffs between law enforcement officers and militia groups at Waco, Texas, in 1993 and Ruby Ridge, Idaho, in 1992.

Authorities said he began to stockpile weapons about a year before the attack and spent $1.5 million in the two years before Oct. 1, 2017. He also started to distance himself from his girlfriend and family.

Paddock sent his girlfriend, Marilou Danley, to visit her family in the Philippines two weeks before the attack. He also wired her $150,000 while she was there. She returned to the U.S. after the shooting and told authorities he had complained that he was sick and doctors told him he was suffering from an incurable “chemical imbalance.”

LAS VEGAS SHOOTER’S FATHER, ‘BINGO BRUCE’, LIVED COLORFUL LIFE OF CRIME AND DECEPTION

In the days before Paddock fired more than 1,000 rounds with assault-style rifles into a country music festival, video footage showed him wheeling bag after bag into his hotel suite while security guards helped him. More than 30 video clips have been released showing Paddock interacting with Mandalay Bay staff, playing the casino’s gaming machines and transporting the bags.

Despite police finding 23 weapons in Paddock’s room after the shooting, he left no note to explain the chaotic mess he left behind.

As part of the memorial events this year, officials held a Sunrise Remembrance ceremony to honor the 58 that were killed.

FINAL RECORDS RELEASED BY POLICE IN LAS VEGAS MASS SHOOTING

“All through the darkness came out an immense light,” Gov. Steve Sisolak said Tuesday morning. “Our Las Vegas family showed its true colors like never before. To give blood, to give comfort, to give support and to push through the next day and the next and the one after that.”

The Nevada DMV also released “Forever Strong” license plates today, with proceeds going toward the Vegas Strong Resiliency Center, described as a “place of healing and support dedicated to serving as a multi-agency resource and referral center for residents, visitors and responders affected by the shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Festival.”

Lacey Newman was shot in the leg during the attack but managed to keep running. She’s now an advocate for a company called citizenAID that offers a cellphone app, online training, and a bandage kit to help people injured in shootings or accidents.

“Our mass shooting was the beginning of change in how a lot of us see the world,” Newman, who lives in Huntington Beach, Calif., told the Associated Press. “That’s a powerful thing. You just never know when something bad is going to happen.”

Purple Heart recipient dies after saving granddaughter, 3, from Oklahoma house explosion

A Purple Heart recipient and Army veteran is being remembered for his heroic actions after sacrificing his own life to save his granddaughter after their home in Oklahoma exploded and caught fire last month.

Don Osteen, 69, was with his 3-year-old granddaughter Paetyn when a propane gas explosion leveled Osteen’s house in Maud, Okla. on Sept. 19.

“Not only was the fire devastating, but the entire house collapsed on them both during the fire,” family members wrote on a GoFundMe page. “Papa rushed to cover Pae with his body to save her from the collapsing house and flames.”

His son, Brendon Osteen, told Oklahoma City television station KFOR his father was 15 to 30 feet away from the front door, lighting a candle next to the stove when the blast took place.

“He wasn`t worried about himself at all,” he told KFOR. “I’ll leave it at that, but save her was the message he was trying to get across and he did exactly that.”

After the blast, family members said the 69-year-old sustained a collapsed lung, broken ribs, and third-degree burns over 70 percent of his body that left “flesh hanging off his body.” Even after sustaining such serious injuries, Osteen grabbed his granddaughter and carried her a quarter of a mile up a driveway to find help.

“He just got out of the house and headed straight to where he knew help was,” Brendon Osteen told KFOR-TV. “He tried to get in his truck and his keys were melted to him. His phone was exploded in his pocket.”

The two were eventually airlifted to Integris Burn Center in Oklahoma City, with both placed in critical condition. On Sept. 23, family members said he succumbed to his injuries.

“He knew that he did his job by saving the life of his Boo Boo Chicken. He loved my daughter beyond unconditionally. And he gave it all for her to live,” Brendon wrote on Facebook. “He was a great God-fearing man who impacted so many people. And he will be missed dearly.”

Brendon, who said his father was a “very Christian man,” called him a hero.

“He believed he should try his best to live his life to the standard of Jesus Christ and that was his first obligation every day that he woke up,” he wrote. “He lived to be like Christ, and he gave his life in sacrifice of my daughters Like Christ.”

Pompeo accuses Dems of ‘bullying’ State employees with deposition demand: ‘I will not tolerate such tactics’

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is fighting back against House Democrats seeking to depose five State Department officials over the Trump-Ukraine controversy.

In a letter and in tweets on Tuesday, Pompeo accused those Democrats of attempting to “intimidate” and “bully” the State Department’s foreign service officers (FSOs) and said depositions being sought by Congress are “not feasible.”

HOUSE COMMITTEES SUBPOENA POMPEO FOR UKRAINE DOCUMENTS AS PART OF IMPEACHMENT INQUIRY

The “requested dates for depositions are not feasible,” Pompeo wrote, claiming the lawmakers have not given the employees enough time to prepare and voicing concern that they’re trying to prevent State Department counsel from participating in the depositions. Pompeo said Executive Branch counsel would have to be present.

“Let me be clear: I will not tolerate such tactics, and I will use all means at my disposal to prevent and expose any attempts to intimidate the dedicated professionals whom I am proud to lead and serve alongside at the Department of State,” Pompeo tweeted in response to the Democrats’ demand for depositions.

It comes as Democrats have launched an impeachment inquiry after President Trump pressed Ukrainian officials this summer to investigate 2020 Democratic rival Joe Biden, his son Hunter and the Bidens’ business activity in Ukraine.

In a letter last week, the Democratic chairs of three House committees notified Pompeo that they had scheduled depositions for five State Department officials between Oct. 2 and Oct. 10.

Those officials are former Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch, U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations Kurt Volker, Deputy Assistant Secretary George Kent, Counselor T. Ulrich Brechbuhl and U.S. Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland. All of the officials except Kent are named in a complaint by an intelligence community whistleblower who accused Trump of “using the power of his office to solicit interference from a foreign country in the 2020 U.S. election.”

GIULIANI SAYS POMPEO WAS AWARE OF HIS UKRAINE OUTREACH

“The failure of any of these department employees to appear for their scheduled depositions shall constitute evidence of obstruction of the House’s impeachment inquiry,” House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Eliot Engel; Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif.; and Oversight Chairman Elijah Cummings, D-Md., wrote.

In a Tuesday tweet, Pompeo posted his letter to Engel and accused the Democrats of trying to “intimidate, bully, & treat improperly” the State employees.

In his letter, Pompeo also accused committee staff of “sending intimidating communications to career department professionals.” He asked for the committee to send requests not to the employees directly, but to the department’s legislative affairs office “as is customary.”

The chairmen also subpoenaed Pompeo Friday for documents related to Ukraine that they say pertain to the impeachment inquiry. “Your failure or refusal to comply with the subpoena shall constitute evidence of obstruction of the House’s impeachment inquiry,” the chairmen wrote.

On Tuesday, Pompeo wrote in his letter that the department “intends to respond to that subpoena by the noticed return date” of Oct. 4.

The Democratic lawmakers have demanded copies of the transcript of Trump’s July 25 controversial call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and a list of State Department officials who might have been involved with the conversation, according to the letter.

The chairmen are additionally requesting any State Department records about Rudy Giuliani, Trump’s personal attorney, and any records that relate to U.S. military aid to Ukraine.

Amber Guyger guilty in Botham Jean shooting, jury finds

Westlake Legal Group og-fox-news Amber Guyger guilty in Botham Jean shooting, jury finds fox news fnc/us fnc Barnini Chakraborty article 0cdac24d-44e4-53e5-8d27-2bf7110a525a

Amber Guyger, the white Dallas cop who shot black neighbor Botham Jean when she mistook his apartment for hers, was found guilty of murder on Tuesday.

Closing arguments ended Monday afternoon in her murder trial.

The shooting has attracted intense national scrutiny not only for the strange circumstances surrounding it but also because it was one in a series of shootings of unarmed black men by white police officers. The incident led to widespread marches, protests and calls for Guyger to be held accountable for Jean’s death.

Guyger, a four-year veteran of the Dallas Police Department, initially was charged with manslaughter for the Sept. 6, 2018 shooting. Two months later, a grand jury indicted her on a murder charge.

Throughout the trial, Guyger’s defense team has framed the shooting as a “tragic but innocent” mistake.

Legal analysts said that the trial’s outcome could hinge on whether the jury would believe Guyger’s account that she made a mistake and that the mistake was reasonable.

During closing arguments, prosecutor Jason Fine with the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office slammed Guyger for changing her story on the witness stand. He said the case “has to do with [Guyger] making an unreasonable decision that put her in the [defense seat] and Bo in the ground.”

He added: “This case is all about what is reasonable and what is absurd.”

This is a developing story; please check back for updates.

Nepal’s speaker of parliament resigns after government worker alleges he raped her in her home

Nepal’s speaker of parliament resigned Tuesday after he was accused of raping a government worker while he was drunk.

Krishna Bahadur Mahara, one of the country’s leading Communist Party leaders, stepped down and in his letter of resignation said he wants to make it easier for an independent and unbiased investigation into the allegation.

A parliament staffer claimed Mahara raped her at her home on Sunday in Tinkune, according to The Himalayan Times. Mahara disputed the allegation, claiming the staffer was trying to get revenge on her for not helping her become a permanent employee in parliament.

“I told her that I cannot help her in that regard,” Mahara said. “She was angry with me for that and leveled the allegation of rape against me.”

Mahara was elected speaker of the House of Representatives last year after the Communist Party of Nepal won a majority of the seats in elections in November 2017.

Mahara was a leading figure of the Maoist rebels who fought a violent campaign against the government between 1996 and 2006. The Maoists entered United Nations-monitored peace talks in 2006, ending their armed revolt, and joined mainstream politics. Mahara played a key role in the peace talks with the government.

Woman disguises herself as bush to photograph sister’s engagement

Nothing says happily ever after like your little sister dressed up as “a bush in the wilderness.”

bride-to-be in Wisconsin wanted her little sister to witness the moment she got engaged, so her good-natured sibling happily dressed up in a ghillie suit to secretly photograph the special occasion — and it came as a big surprise to her sis.

Rachel Merkel recently made it her known to boyfriend Andrew Philibeck that she wanted her little sister Therese to be present when he ultimately popped the question, BuzzFeed News reports.

“I even told Andrew, ‘Is this going to ruin the vibe of the romance?'” Therese, 23, told the outlet.

Nevertheless, Andrew was confident that the unusual plan was the right idea.

One month later, Andrew beautified a scenic, woodsy outlet with sunflowers, lanterns and other décor while staging the all-important moment. But little did Rachel know that her little sister was there, too — ready and waiting in her ghillie suit to capture the picture-perfect proposal.

Andrew claimed he had a hard time seeing her.

“She was so well hidden with the ghillie suit in the bushes that I couldn’t find her, so I was nervous that she wasn’t even there,” the groom-to-be told BuzzFeed.

Moments after Rachel said “yes” to Andrew, Therese popped out and surprised her sister, excitedly shouting, “She said yes!”

“’What are you, a weird bush?'” Rachel said upon first seeing the suit, according to Therese. “It totally made the moment.”

Last Monday, the prankster took to Twitter to share the funny tale, in a post that has since gone massively viral with over 179,000 likes and 22,000 shares.

“Sister got engaged this weekend and I dressed as a bush in the wilderness to watch/capture the moment. We are 1 [year] apart… why are our lives so different [?]” Therese wondered.

Despite the hype, the woman said she hopes to keep the focus on her special sister’s big moment — and her road to saying “I do” with Andrew.

“I was really just there to cheer them on. It’s all for them,” Therese said. “I’m just so excited that I was a part of it.”

Taliban insurgents kill 11 police officers during attack on Afghan government building, officials say

A multi-pronged Taliban attack on a government building in northern Afghanistan on Tuesday has left at least 11 police officers dead, officials say.

The assault on the Shortepa district headquarters in Balkh province – which sparked a gunfight that lasted several hours — comes just days after the country held its presidential elections.

“Security situation is under control right now,” Munir Ahmad Farhad, a spokesman for the provincial governor, told the Associated Press, adding that Afghan reinforcements have driven the Taliban from the area.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said insurgents had overrun the compound, but Farhad denied the claim.

Taliban insurgents are reportedly thought to have suffered an unknown number of casualties during the attack, while officials say 11 police officers were killed.

In a separate Taliban attack in eastern Ghazni province on Tuesday, at least three civilians were gunned down while traveling in a vehicle, according to the Associated Press.

Last week, there were at least 68 attacks by the Taliban across the country during election day, most of them rockets fired from distant outposts. At least five people were killed in those incidents, the AP says, including one policeman, and many more were wounded.

Despite upgraded security, authorities said 431 polling stations stayed closed because it was impossible to guarantee their security since they were either in areas under Taliban control or in places where insurgents could threaten nearby villages. The Taliban still controls or holds sway over roughly half the country.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Robert Mueller re-joined the WilmerHale law firm on Tuesday, following a nearly three-year hiatus as he served as special counsel investigating Russian meddling and potential collusion with Trump campaign associates during the 2016 presidential election.

Mueller’s role at the prominent Washington D.C. law firm will focus on high-profile investigations and crisis management, similar to his work there before being appointed special counsel in 2017.

“We couldn’t be happier to have Bob, our extraordinary friend, and colleague, return to WilmerHale,” Robert Novick, the firm’s co-managing partner, said in a statement Tuesday. “Few lawyers have been entrusted with as many matters of national significance as Bob, in both his public service and in private practice. Bob embodies the highest values of our firm and profession. We’re privileged to work alongside him once again.”

Mueller said in a statement he was “glad” to be at WilmerHale again, calling it a firm with “a tradition of honoring public service.”

“It was an honor to serve as special counsel,” he said. “Now, I look forward to resuming my private practice alongside the talented lawyers at the firm.”

Mueller deputies James Quarles and Aaron Zebely, who both worked at the firm prior to joining the special counsel’s office, are also returning to WilmerHale.

Other top investigators who worked alongside Mueller also have landed on their feet since shuttering the special counsel’s office. Michael Dreeben joined Georgetown Law School; Andrew Weissman joined New York University Law and has signed a book deal with Random House; Andrew Goldstein joined Cooley law firm; Zainab Ahmad joined law firm Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP; Greg Andres returned to Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP; and Jeannie Rhee, who formerly served at WilmerHale, joined Paul Weiss as a partner.

Meanwhile, some former prosecutors on Mueller’s team have returned to public service—like Brandon Van Grack, who is now leading the effort at the Justice Department to enforce the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA).

In May, Mueller announced the closing of his office and detailed the findings of the Russia investigation, reporting that there “was not sufficient evidence to charge a conspiracy” with regard to whether members of the Trump campaign coordinated with the Russian government during the 2016 presidential election.

Mueller, though, left the door open on whether the president obstructed justice.

“If we had had confidence that the president clearly did not commit a crime, we would have said that,” Mueller said. “We did not determine whether the president did commit a crime.”
