WaPo calls out McConnell for lack of action on guns, lists hundreds of names of mass shooting victims

Following increased calls from the media for further gun control measures, the Washington Post editorial board singled out Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., in a Tuesday op-ed, and called on him to ban assault weapons, claiming it would save lives.

The opinion piece, entitled: “How many more names will be added to the list before Mitch McConnell acts on guns?” cites American mass shootings from 1999 to the present and lists each victim, along with their age and where the shootings took place.

“No single law would end gun violence, but there are reasonable, obvious measures that would help,” the board wrote.

“For example: Ban the sale of military-grade assault weapons. Unneeded by civilians, they are a blight on the nation, their ready availability a national disgrace. Eliminating them would slow the growth of this list. It would save lives.”

ADAM KINZINGER: ‘SERIOUS MOVEMENT’ BREWING TO OVERTURN ENTIRE SECOND AMENDMENT

Despite the call to action, the article does not tackle the issue of increased background checks, mandatory gun buybacks, regulation of ammunition, red flag laws, or the implications of state efforts to regulate the Second Amendment.

Instead, the article focuses more on emotion and lets the names of the dead stand alone.

“The list below, far from comprehensive, is tragic, in part, because it is so far from inevitable,” the story reads.

The editorial board also asked what it would take to force McConnell’s hand on gun legislation, and offered up a hypothetical future where mass shootings occur every day.

“What if there was a mass shooting in the United States not once or twice or four or six times monthly, but every single day, a big one, the kind that electrifies social media and squats for days on Page 1 — would that be enough to move Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell from his insistent inertia on gun safety?” the board asked.

“Would any volume of bloodshed convince the Kentucky Republican that Congress faces a moral imperative to act?”

Joe Scarborough again accused Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., of doing the bidding of Russian President Vladimir Putin Wednesday, and claimed the Senate majority leader has no interest in protecting Americans from mass shootings or domestic threats.

Co-host Mika Brzezinksi cited an article from The Washington Post‘s editorial board urging McConnell to move forward on gun control legislation, which sent Scarborough into a rant about Russian interference and mass shootings.

“That’s what Moscow Mitch says… he’s going to have the legacy of basically doing the work of Vladimir Putin,” Scarborough said. “He’s been told by everybody that Russia is trying to interfere and disrupt our democratic process, that we are under attack. And so Mitch McConnell is killing Republican bills… that would protect the homeland.”

“What about his legacy protecting us from domestic enemies,” he asked. “People that would shoot children, first graders… with AR-15’s. Or people that would shoot wildly from their car in Odessa, Texas — and shoot 17-month-old babies in the back seat of their cars.”

Scarborough continued to question McConnell’s motivations and said he’s sabotaging efforts to protect America from foreign and domestic threats for political reasons.

More from Media

“Moscow Mitch won’t do anything in protecting us from foreign enemies, he has been the one person that has killed every one of these bills to protect us from our domestic enemies, that are gunning down our children every day,” he said.

“What’s his end game? What’s his legacy? Where does it end?” Scarborough continued. “Russia is invading this country and we need to protect the homeland.”

Scarborough’s nickname for McConnell, “Moscow Mitch” drew a response from the Kentucky Republican back in July on the Senate floor.

“These pundits are lying, lying when they dismiss the work that has been done. They’re lying when they insist I have personally blocked actions which, in fact, I have championed and the Senate has passed. They are lying when they suggest that either party is against defending our democracy,” he said during a floor speech.

He also addressed the issue during the “Hugh Hewit show” on Tuesday, saying the media’s efforts to demonize him are “over the top.”

All-electric Porsche Taycan debuts as the world’s most powerful sedan

The Porsche Taycan is almost ready to take on Tesla.

The production version of the German automaker’s first all-electric car was revealed on Wednesday morning at Niagara Falls near a hydroelectric power plant. Simultaneous events were held at a wind farm in China and a solar farm in Germany in order to drive home its green energy cred.

The curvy four-door is roughly the same size as a Tesla Model S, at which it is very squarely-aimed. The styling makes it instantly recognizable as a Porsche, but with a modern edge that doesn’t stray too far into the realm of science fiction. Deliveries are scheduled to begin late this year with the top of the line Turbo and Turbo S versions that were unveiled in New York.

Electric cars don’t have turbochargers, but Porsche North America President Klaus Zellmer told Fox News Autos that the company decided to keep the nomenclature because it’s moved beyond its traditional definition at the brand (and others, like Gillette.)

“Our customers identify it with the highest model in each of our lineups,” Zellmer said.

Both feature all-wheel-drive with dual electric motors powered by a 93.4-kilowatt-hour battery pack. The front motor drives the wheels directly, as is common in electric cars, bit the rear features a 2-speed transmission. Zellmer said Porsche took the unusual step because it was the best way to fully utilize the Taycan’s power.

MORE FROM FOX NEWS AUTOS

There’s plenty of it. The Turbo is rated at 616 hp and can crank out up to 670 hp and 626 lb-ft of torque in bursts when launch control is engaged. The Turbo S has the same base horsepower, but has a max power output of 750 hp and 774 lb-ft, which technically makes it the most powerful sedan in the world. Less potent versions will be added later, but Porsche is looking to come hard out of the gate with the Turbos, and they can definitely do that.

The Turbo and Turbo S can accelerate to 60 mph in 3.0 s and 2.6 s, respectively, and cover a quarter-mile in 11.1 s and 10.6 s. The Tesla Model S is officially capable of hitting 60 mph in 2.4 s, but Porsche is notorious for sandbagging its performance specifications. Importantly, it says it can provide this kind of performance over and over again without any loss of power, which is a common issue with electric performance cars.

Top speed for both is restricted to 161 mph, but exactly how far you can drive them at that or any speed is yet to be determined. At least in the U.S. In Europe, they’re rated with ranges of 450 km per charge for the Turbo and 412 km for the Turbo S. That converts to 280 mi and 256 mi, but the European testing procedure is different from the EPA’s. For comparison, The Tesla Model S Long Range, which features a 100-kilowatt-hour battery, is rated at 610 km in Europe and 370 miles in the U.S.

Whatever the range ends up being, drivers will be able to replenish it quickly thanks to the Taycan’s 800-volt battery pack, an industry first. Plugged-in to a 270 kw charger it can fill it from 5 percent to 80 percent in 22.5 minutes and is capable of handling up to 400 kw.

Porsche is installing high-speed chargers at each of its dealerships and several public charging networks are also adding them to their stations. Among them is Electrify America, which is owned by Porsche parent Volkswagen Group and will provide Taycan owners with three years of complimentary charging, similar to how Tesla has granted free access to its Superchargers as an incentive to some customers.

One thing Porsche isn’t looking to compete with Tesla on is the promise of autonomy. Zellmer said the Taycans can only be had with Level 2 driver assist features like those currently offered on its other models, because Porsche doesn’t think more advanced systems are ready for primetime and is “convinced our customers like the feel of a steering wheel and full control.”

That wheel sits in front of one of the five digital displays in the Taycan’s cabin, with another placed above the glove compartment for the front passenger to use. Full details on the features they will provide have not been released, but the Taycan will be the first car that can run Apple Music without a connected smartphone and will accommodate over-the-air updates. Leather-free interiors will be available.

The Turbo comes with an adaptive air suspension and can be equipped with optional roll control and rear-wheel-steering systems that are standard on the Turbo S. Four drive modes deliver a range of comfort and performance settings, while drivers can program their own combination of suspension stiffness and power delivery. A Turbo S recently set a track record for electric sedans at the benchmark 13-mile-long Nurburgring Nordschleife race track in Germany with a time of 7:42, just 10 seconds off the four-door record.

Prices start at $154,660 for the Turbo and $188,960 for the Turbo S, which is roughly the same as the equivalent Porsche Panameras. Zellmer said both have a place in Porsche’s lineup.

“The Taycan is for customers looking to be first movers on the battery electric trend, while the Panamera suits those who prefer the feel and sound of an internal combustion engine and aren’t quite ready to take the step into electrification.”

Additional Taycan models will be added soon, but pricing hasn’t been announced. However, the entry-level Panamera is under $90,000 and rumor has it the Taycan will eventually follow suit.

Porsche claims it has over 20,000 refundable deposits for the Taycan, which represents roughly the first full year of production, but now that the order books are open it will find out how many of those actually translate into sales.

Renee Zellweger talks plastic surgery rumors: ‘That makes me sad’

Renee Zellweger opened up about feeling “sad” after a red carpet appearance in 2014 had the world convinced the actress had undergone plastic surgery on her face.

The star, who plays famed actress Judy Garland in the upcoming biopic “Judy,” reemerged after a break from acting in 2014 at the Elle Women in Hollywood Awards. People were quick to notice that her face looked much different than it did the last time they’d seen the “Chicago” actress in public.

The media scrutiny ultimately led to her penning a guest column in HuffPost in which she called for less speculation about celebrities titled “We Can Do Better.”

“Nothing like international humiliation to set your perspective right!” she told Vulture in a recent interview. “It clarifies what’s important to you. And it shakes off any sort of clingy superficiality … that you didn’t have time for anyway. One of the fears that maybe, as artists, we all share — because we have this public experience of being criticized not just for our work but as human beings — is when it gets to be too much, when you learn that your skin is not quite as thick as you need it to be, what is that gonna feel like? Well, now I know. I got the hardest kick. And it ain’t the end.”

The star went on to address the 2014 controversy directly, explaining that the topic is still sensitive to her given what receiving plastic surgery would imply to others about her character.

“Well, because there’s a value judgment that’s placed on us. As if it somehow is a reflection of your character — whether you’re a good person or a weak person or an authentic person,” she explained.

When her interviewer suggested that fans may have been concerned about her drastically changing her appearance after being out of the public eye for years, she noted that thought makes her “sad.”

“And the implication that I somehow needed to change what was going on because it wasn’t working,” she told the outlet. “That makes me sad. I don’t look at beauty in that way. And I don’t think of myself in that way. I like my weird quirkiness, my off-kilter mix of things. It enables me to do what I do. I don’t want to be something else. I got hired in my blue jeans and cowboy boots with my messy hair. I started working like that. I didn’t have to change to work. So why was I suddenly trying to fit into some mold that didn’t belong to me?”

In her response to the “kerfuffle” to HuffPost in 2016, Zellweger denied having any work done on her face.

“Not that it’s anyone’s business, but I did not make a decision to alter my face and have surgery on my eyes. This fact is of no true import to anyone at all, but that the possibility alone was discussed among respected journalists and became a public conversation is a disconcerting illustration of news/entertainment confusion and society’s fixation on physicality.”

As the Vulture article notes, the 50-year-old star’s face looks more familiar these days as she prepares for her starring role as Garland. The public’s perception of an actress’ looks come into play in “Judy” as it takes place during the last six months of Garland’s life, when the weight of the public eye was at its heaviest on the “Wizard of Oz” actress.

Intense ammonia storms on Jupiter are messing up the planet’s belts

Don’t you just hate it when there’s a problem with your belt?

Jupiter, the largest planet in the solar system, is perhaps most famous for its giant Red Spot, a continuous storm that has been observed since 1830. But now, new powerful storms have started on the gas giant and they are disrupting the planet’s belts.

These storms are affecting the planet’s white and brown belts, creating distortion among the bands, which are usually separated. Made of ammonia and water vapor, the storms are rising through Jupiter’s cloud layer and then being condensed into white plumes.

NASA TO EXPLORE JUPITER’S MOON EUROPA, WHICH MAY HOLD LIFE

“If these plumes are vigorous and continue to have convective events, they may disturb one of these entire bands over time, though it may take a few months,” said the study’s lead author, Imke de Pater, in a statement. “With these observations, we see one plume in progress and the aftereffects of the others.”

The study, which is awaiting publication in The Astronomical Journal, can be found here.

The researchers were able to identify the storms using the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA), as well as the Hubble Space Telescope.

“Our ALMA observations are the first to show that high concentrations of ammonia gas are brought up during an energetic eruption,” de Pater added.

JUPITER COLLIDED WITH STILL-FORMING PLANET 4.5B YEARS AGO: ‘ONE IN A TRILLION PROBABILITY’

Usually, the ammonia clouds are the top thin layer of both the brown and white clouds that make up Jupiter’s bands. But since the ammonia does not rise higher than the hydrogen and helium that make up the planet’s atmosphere, it’s difficult to know what is causing these storms, the researchers noted.

“We were really lucky with these data, because they were taken just a few days after amateur astronomers found a bright plume in the South Equatorial Belt,” de Pater continued. “With ALMA, we observed the whole planet and saw that plume, and since ALMA probes below the cloud layers, we could actually see what was going on below the ammonia clouds.”

Michigan bans flavored e-cigarettes, becoming the first state to do so, governor says

In a move to discourage teens and other young people from vaping, Michigan will become the first state to ban flavored e-cigarettes, the state’s governor said.

Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer told The Washington Post the state on Wednesday will become the first to ban the flavored devices.

The ban goes into effect immediately and applies to both retail and online sales, though businesses have 30 days to comply. Mint, menthol, sweet and fruity flavors will be affected, but tobacco-flavored e-cigarettes will not, she said.

E-CIGARETTES DAMAGE BLOOD VESSELS EVEN IF DEVICES DON’T CONTAIN NICOTINE, STUDY FINDS

The ban will last six months but can be renewed for another six months as state officials “develop permanent regulations banning flavored e-cigarettes,” The Washington Post reported.

“My number one priority is keeping our kids safe and protecting the health of the people of Michigan,” Whitmer told the newspaper, adding the ban will also restrict the use of “misleading” words such as “safe” and “healthy” on vaping advertisements.

The move comes after San Francisco in June took a step to curb teen vaping addiction by banning the sales of the devices.

“My number one priority is keeping our kids safe and protecting the health of the people of Michigan.”

— Gov. Gretchen Whitmer

Additionally, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in March issued a proposal to restrict the sale of flavored e-cigarettes which has not been finalized. The restrictions would affect sweet and fruity flavors, but not mint and menthol, which also attract teens, according to The Washington Post.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said Friday there were 215 potential cases of respiratory illnesses linked to vaping across 25 states. Teens primarily have been affected. The first vaping-related death was reported last month in Illinois.

Both the CDC and the FDA are investigating what may be behind the illnesses, though a specific product has not yet been identified. An unnamed source reportedly told The Washington Post last week both state and federal health officials are looking at “contaminants or counterfeit substances,” specifically in THC-containing vaping products, as a possible source.

“More information is needed to better understand whether there’s a relationship between any specific products or substances and the reported illnesses,” the CDC told Fox News in a statement. “At this time, there does not appear to be one product involved in all of the cases, although THC and cannabinoids use has been reported in many cases. At this time, the specific substances within the e-cigarette products that cause illness are not known and could involve a variety of substances.”

“We continue to gather information about the names of the products used, where they were purchased, and how the products were used. That information is critical to help determine whether patterns emerge on which we can take additional action.”

The negative health effects associated with cigarettes and cigars have long been documented, leading to a decline in use among teens in the U.S. in recent years.

But the same isn’t true for e-cigarette use. In 2018, nearly one in every 20 middle school students (4.9 percent) reported using electronic cigarettes in the past 30 days. That’s an increase from less than 1 percent in 2011.

Last year, the Surgeon General of the United States, Jerome Adams, declared vaping among American teens an “epidemic.”

“This is an unprecedented challenge,” said Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar at the time.

JUUL CEO KEVIN BURNS CALLS VAPING-RELATED ILLNESSES ‘WORRISOME,’ BUT WON’T PULL PRODUCTS

Though e-cigarettes are often touted as a “safer” alternative to cigarettes, a recent study found that may not be true.

The study, led by University of Pennsylvania researchers, claimed there are damaging effects on a user’s blood vessels after just one use.

A spokesperson for Gov. Gretchen Whitmer did not immediately return Fox News’ request for comment on Wednesday.

The Dallas Cowboys and star running back Ezekiel Elliott agreed to a new contract to make him the highest-paid player at his position and end his holdout — just days before the start of the season.

The Cowboys announced the team agreed to a six-year, $90 million contract extension with Elliott with about half of the salary being guaranteed.

JERRY JONES: DALLAS PREPPING TO PLAY WITHOUT MISSING ELLIOTT

The deal will pay Elliott more money than Los Angeles Rams running back Todd Gurley, who signed a four-year, $57.5 million deal before the 2018 season.

Elliott’s monster contract ends the holdout, which cost the running back training camp with the team. Elliott spent the end of his offseason training in Mexico while hoping the franchise and his agent would come to terms on a new deal.

NFL FREE AGENT RYAN RUSSELL COMES OUT AS BISEXUAL, HOPES TO RETURN TO LEAGUE

Dallas owner Jerry Jones had been very public about his dealings with Elliott, even getting ready to use rookie Tony Pollard in case Elliott wasn’t ready to go for Week 1 against the New York Giants. But Elliott left Mexico on Tuesday and word broke about the big deal early Wednesday.

Elliott has been one of the most prolific running backs in the NFL since Dallas selected him with the No. 4 pick of the 2016 NFL Draft. In three seasons, Elliott has made two Pro Bowls and led the league in rushing twice.

NASA captures incredible image of dying star in deep space

Talk about an exit.

NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope managed to snap an incredible picture of a dying star in the Gemini constellation.

The constellation of Gemini, which is also known as the Twins, confused astronomers when it was first studied, the government agency said in a blog post. “Rather than being classified as a single object, it was instead recorded as two objects, owing to its symmetrical lobed structure (known as NGC 2371 and NGC 2372, though sometimes referred to together as NGC 2371/2).”

The two objects (or lobes) form what’s known as a planetary nebula, which is described as “shells of gas and dust that have been ejected from a star during the process of its evolution from a hydrogen-burning main sequence star into a red giant and eventually into a white dwarf.”

Despite the term, it has nothing to do with planets or exoplanets. Instead, NGC 2371/2 was created when a star, similar to our Sun, reached the end of its life and “blasted off its outer layers, shedding the constituent material and pushing it out into space to leave just a superheated stellar remnant behind.” What’s left behind is visible as the bright star in the center between the lobes,” NASA added in the post.

It’s expected that there will be a significant change to the region over the next few thousand years, as the lobes eventually dissipate completely, “and the remnant star will cool and dim to form a white dwarf.”

The Hubble Space Telescope, which has been in orbit since 1990, continues to allow incredible discoveries. However, it is slated to be replaced by the long-delayed James Webb telescope, which will provide great resolution and sensitivity over the Hubble, among several other improvements.

Last month, the telescope was assembled for the first time, as engineers joined the two halves together using a crane in Redondo Beach, Calif.

NTSB report says California Tesla driver was using Autopilot when he hit a firetruck

A government report says the driver of a Tesla that slammed into a firetruck near Los Angeles last year was using the car’s Autopilot system when a vehicle in front of him suddenly changed lanes and he didn’t have time to react.

Westlake Legal Group tesla-crash NTSB report says California Tesla driver was using Autopilot when he hit a firetruck fox-news/us/us-regions/west/california fox-news/auto/make/tesla fox-news/auto/attributes/safety fox-news/auto/attributes/innovations fox-news/auto/attributes/electric fnc/auto fnc cecdc883-86c6-5e65-bda3-47c92fabde54 Associated Press article

(Culver City Firefighters Local 1927)

The National Transportation Safety Board said Tuesday the driver never saw the parked firetruck and didn’t brake. Apparently the man’s 2014 Tesla Model S didn’t brake either.

The report raises further questions about the effectiveness of Tesla’s system, which was in operation before several other crashes including two fatalities in Florida and one in Silicon Valley. Tesla warns drivers that the system is not fully autonomous and drivers must be ready to intervene.

The NTSB report didn’t state a cause of the crash. The agency will issue a final report Wednesday.

The driver in the Jan. 22, 2018 firetruck crash on Interstate 405 was not hurt. But the NTSB report says he did not have his hands on the steering wheel at the time of the crash.

The firetruck from Culver City, California, had stopped in the northbound high occupancy vehicle lane with its emergency lights flashing as it responded to another crash. The firefighters were also uninjured.

The Tesla driver, from suburban Woodland Hills, told the NTSB that he was traveling to work in Los Angeles when the crash happened. He told investigators he was looking forward with his hand rested on his knee while touching the bottom of the steering wheel.

Just before the crash, a large vehicle, an SUV or pickup truck, changed lanes in front of him, the driver told the NTSB.

“Although the driver stated that he was looking forward, he was unable to see the firetruck in time enough to avoid the crash. The driver had coffee and a bagel at the time, but he wasn’t sure if either was in his hand when the crash occurred,” according to the report.

Cellphone data showed the driver was not using his phone to talk or text in the minutes leading up to the crash.

A statement from a driver in a nearby vehicle provided by Tesla said the driver appeared to be looking down at a cellphone or other device he was holding in his left hand before the crash.

The NTSB determined in September 2017 that design limitations of the Tesla Model S Autopilot played a major role in a May 2016 fatal crash in Florida involving a vehicle operating under Autopilot. But it blamed the crash on an inattentive Tesla driver’s overreliance on technology and a truck driver who made a left turn in front of the car.

The California investigation comes as the federal government has few regulations governing autonomous vehicles and driver-assist systems that can drive a car under certain circumstances. The systems can significantly reduce crashes, but computer-driven vehicles also can make mistakes.
