Washington Post awards Adam Schiff ‘Four Pinocchios’ for false comments about whistleblower

The Washington Post awarded “Four Pinocchios” to House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff on Friday, claiming he hadn’t told the truth about his knowledge of the whistleblower.

Schiff has played a leading role in investigating the Trump-Ukraine scandal but hasn’t been truthful in the process, according to Washington Post fact-checker Glenn Kessler.

Kessler laid out a compelling, fact-based argument that Schiff wasn’t honest when asked if he had advanced knowledge about the whistleblower’s concerns regarding the now-infamous phone call between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in a series of interviews.

“Schiff’s answers are especially interesting in the wake of reports in The New York Times and The Washington Post that the whistleblower approached a House Intelligence Committee staff member for guidance before filing a complaint with the Intelligence Community inspector general,” Kessler wrote.

Last month, Schiff sat down with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, who asked if he was in contact with the whistleblower, or even if he simply knew their identity.

“I don’t know the identity of the whistleblower … I don’t want to get into any particulars. I want to make sure that there’s nothing that I do that jeopardizes the whistleblower in any way,” Schiff told CNN when asked if the whistleblower has contacted him.

The Post called this answer a “classic dodge” and noted that the CNN host didn’t bother with a follow-up question – which helped Schiff avoid giving a potentially damaging answer.

“He managed not to mislead; he just simply did not answer the question,” Kessler wrote of Schiff.

The very next day, Schiff appeared on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” where he seemingly graduated from dodging to lying, the Post says.

“We have not spoken directly with the whistleblower,” Schiff said on MSNBC.

Kessler noted that this is “flat-out false” given information that has since become available.

“Unlike the quick two-step dance he performed with Anderson Cooper, Schiff simply says the committee had not spoken to the whistleblower. Now we know that’s not true,” the Post’s fact-checker wrote.

A committee spokesman attempted to defend Schiff in a statement to the Post: “He intended to answer the question of whether the Committee had heard testimony from the whistleblower, which they had not… the whistleblower was then awaiting instructions from the Acting DNI as to how the whistleblower could contact the Committee. Nonetheless, he acknowledges that his statement should have been more carefully phrased to make that distinction clear.”

On Sept. 19, Schiff was at it again, according to the Post, when speaking with reporters at the Capitol.

“In the absence of the actions, and I want to thank the inspector general, in the absence of his actions in coming to our committee, we might not have even known there was a whistleblower complaint alleging an urgent concern,” Schiff said.

The Post’s fact-checker called this “misleading” comment “more dissembling” and noted that “his committee knew that something explosive was going to be filed with the IG.”

Kessler wrote there “are right ways and wrong ways to answer reporters’ questions if a politician wants to maintain his or her credibility” and there is “nothing wrong with dodging a question, as long as you don’t try to mislead.”

But Schiff “clearly made a statement that was false” on MSNBC and “compounded his falsehood” when speaking with reporters at the Capitol, Kessler wrote.

The Post’s Fact Checker team considered Four Pinocchios to be “whoppers” and most egregious offense outside of the rare “Bottomless Pinocchio.”

Republicans have also decried how Schiff, during a hearing last week, read a “parody” version of Trump’s phone call with Ukraine’s president.

Trump-friendly tech guru: Silicon Valley sees China as ‘the ultimate business opportunity, not the ultimate adversary’

At the height of the 2016 presidential contest, then-Facebook executive Palmer Luckey was a Silicon Valley star when he donated $10,000 to an anti-Hillary Clinton group. Six months later, he was out – reportedly fired for his political positions.

Now, Luckey runs a new venture, backed by Silicon Valley billionaire Peter Thiel, that is reportedly valued at more than $1 billion.

PETER THIEL WARNS U.S. LAGGING CHINA IN FACIAL RECOGNITION TECHNOLOGY

In the new FOX Nation documentary “Artificial Intelligence: The Coming Revolution,” Fox Business Network anchor and ‘Mornings with Maria’ host Maria Bartiromo went inside Luckey’s Anduril Industries, which is at the forefront of America’s race to use artificial intelligence to protect national security.

“The thing about the United States is that we are at a strategic disadvantage because of the ethics that we have. We’re not willing to play dirty. … We’re not willing to let machines decide what targets to kill and not kill entirely on their own with no human supervision.  Russia and China don’t have a problem with any of those things,” Luckey told Fox Nation.

DETROIT POLICE CHIEF PUSHES BACK AGAINST REP TLAIB’S SUGGESTION TO ONLY HIRE BLACK FACIAL RECOGNITION ANALYSTS

The U.S. government’s investment in unclassified research and development for A.I.-related technologies is up 40 percent since 2015.  However, China is reportedly sending much more.  Worldwide investments in A.I. reached nearly $40 billion in 2017, with China accounting for 70 percent of that total.

Anduril Industries won a contract with Pentagon that Google walked away from after Google employees objected to the use of A.I. in military applications.

However, Google does have an artificial intelligence lab in China, something that Luckey and others say could be dangerous.

“In China … there’s no difference between their civil sector and military sector. It’s all one thing.  That’s why when you help Chinese companies work on artificial intelligence you are almost directly helping the Chinese military work on artificial intelligence.  A lot of people in Silicon Valley don’t really understand this. A lot of people in Silicon Valley, a lot of companies in Silicon Valley, see China as the ultimate business opportunity, not the ultimate adversary,” he said.

Thiel made similar allegations against Google over its work with the Chinese government.  Fox Nation reached out to Google and a spokesman said the allegations are baseless.

‘WTF? Shakira and JLo?!’: This musician has a problem with Super Bowl halftime lineup

The NFL had big news when they announced that Jennifer Lopez and Shakira will be performing at the 2020 Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show, but not everyone is thrilled.

Weighing in on the issue, Fox Nation’s “UN-PC” hosts discussed a recent reaction from “Twisted Sister” heavy metal singer Dee Snider after he slammed the NFL for their choice in performers, and blamed them for ignoring “heavy music” in their considerations.

“Once again, the great heavy music that rocks the stadiums week after week, game after game, is completely ignored”

— Dee Snider

“WTF!? @shakira and @jlo for this year’s @nfl halftime show!? Once again the great heavy music that rocks the stadiums week after week, game after game is completely ignored. I guess we don’t shake our a** enough,” he wrote.

Host Tom Shillue said he largely agreed with Snider’s message and suggested a compromise for the highly anticipated show.

JENNIFER LOPEZ, SHAKIRA CONFIRMED AS SUPER BOWL HALFTIME PERFORMERS

“Maybe you can have one … but then we want to see some arena rock —  people love that, it goes with the NFL … it’s totally right,” he said.

Snider expressed frustration that while metal and hard rock bands are the “go-to” for football games, they have never been invited to perform at a halftime show.

The “I Wanna Rock” singer went on to clarify that he doesn’t take issue with Lopez or Shakira, per se, but that he finds that rock bands have long been underrepresented as Super Bowl headline performers.

“My point about this year’s @NFL halftime show isn’t a slight on @shakira or @JLo, it’s frustration that week after week rock is the go-to music during games but gets no respect when it comes to the Super Bowl,” he tweeted, suggesting the well-known rock band Metallica as an option.

This isn’t the first time Snider voiced his frustration with the lack of a heavy metal presence at halftime shows.

In February, during Maroon 5’s performance for the 2019 Super Bowl, Snider tweeted, “Hey @NFL! Your go-to songs at EVERY game are metal: Enter Sandman, Cum On Feel the Noise, Thunder, Crazy Train, We’re Not Gonna Take It, We Are the Champions, Final Countdown, I Wanna Rock, We Will Rock You, Welcome to Jungle. NONE of those bands have EVER played half-time show!”

While many on Twitter were quick to defend the current halftime lineup, some heavy metal fans came to Snider’s defense.

“Hey @deesinder Don’t need to explain yourself, we understood what you said and you are absolutely right, they play rock music during games, you’d expect the same on a bigger scale on the top show. No respect,” one user wrote.

Another user suggested an “amazing mashups with other metal artists,” and that “with the right pyrotechnics and choreography, it could be a halftime show to end all halftime shows,” she wrote.

JENNIFER LOPEZ ON SUPER BOWL HALFTIME SHOW: ‘I CAN’T SAY I WOULDN’T LOVE IT’

Echoing their support, Shillue reiterated his position.

“Wouldn’t it be great if they could book ‘We’re not gonna take it, Twister Sister’ for an NFL show…I think it’d be great,” he said.

Joining the latest episode, guest Stephanie Hamill said that while she thinks people watching the show live would enjoy a rock and heavy metal performance, she questioned whether viewers at home would have the same experience.

“I think the fans in the stands would like that,” she said, “but I think the people at home, especially the younger folks that are watching, might want to see JLO and Shakira…they’re very talented artists…but I think he has a point. Maybe they can mix it up.”

Host Britt McHenry said that while she thinks Snider has a point, she’s excited about Shakira and Jennifer Lopez bringing their music to the stage.

“He does have a point…but I like this pair, I think it’s fun,” she said.

The superstar performers, who have released music in Spanish and English since the 1990s, will perform on February 2, 2020, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.

Last year, Maroon 5 headlined the Super Bowl halftime show from the Mercedez-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, with Travis Scott and Outkast’s Big Boi also performing. In prior years Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Justin Timberlake, and Bruno Mars have taken the coveted stage.

The latest full episode of  “UN-PC” will be available on Fox Nation at 6:30pm et on October 4.  Visit Fox Nation and sign up today.

Dominican Republic doctor helps impoverished community he grew up in: ‘God answered my prayers’

Today, Dr. Jose Frank Piña, 30, has a wife and a daughter in his native Dominican Republic. He is a medical missionary who shares medical advice every Saturday on television.

But when he was growing up in an impoverished community, none of this seemed possible.

Piña grew up in the city of San Juan, in a home that had just two rooms, sharing a bed with two siblings, in an area ravaged by gang violence and frequent flooding.

At 4 years old, he was registered in a local church’s Compassion International, a Christian sponsor program center where he received medical care, nutrition and vocational courses like English and computers.

“When I was a child living in a dangerous environment where gangs used to fight with machetes and guns, the letters from my sponsors helped me see a different reality of the world,” Piña told Fox News. “We saw hope.”

He added: “I thank God for Compassion because being a kid in poverty, you can’t have dreams or sometimes you have dreams but you can’t make them come true because of the needs you have. They gave me the opportunity to dream and make those dreams come true.”

Speaking to Fox News from the hospital where he works now, Piña shared how he is helping others in his community break the cycle of poverty.

Memphis pastor says he forgives vandals who caused $50G in damage to church: ‘God still loves you’

The pastor of a local church in Frayser, Tenn., walked in Sunday morning to see his church had been almost completely destroyed overnight.

Davante Hill, the pastor of One Church, told the police that when he entered at 8 a.m. he found musical instruments broken, paint thrown at the walls, pews destroyed, 90 percent of the chairs damaged and the power had been cut off. Money and several speakers were also stolen.

“When I walked in… what broke me, was not the condition of the sanctuary, what broke me was the condition of someone’s heart to be willing to do such a thing,” Hill told WMC, a local TV station.

The pastor said he believes that the person that did this to the church, which has been in the community for only five months, has been there before because the vandals turned off the security cameras before the incident.

Police are still investigating the burglary.

Pastor Hill hopes the police find those who are responsible for this damage to the congregation but still sends words of forgiveness and support to the vandals that did this to the house of worship.

“I would love for whoever is responsible to consider my heart when I say, ‘I love you and God still loves you. And that this is not the end, there is life after this,” he told WMC. “And that whatever it is that has you broken, whatever it is that has you destroyed on the inside, there is help for you.”

The Memphis Police Department told FOX 13 that the estimated damage at the church is between $15,000 to $20,000, but Hill said it could be well over $50,000.

On Facebook, the pastor thanked the community for the support they have given the church in this hard time.

Miley Cyrus spotted kissing singer Cody Simpson after Kaitlynn Carter, Liam Hemsworth splits

Miley Cyrus isn’t letting back-to-back breakups keep her from potentially finding love again.

The singer, 26, was spotted Thursday kissing fellow musician Cody Simpson, 22, at a store in Los Angeles, according to video obtained by TMZ.

The two were first linked back in late 2014, but in 2015 Simpson told GQ Australia that they were “just mates.”

Trump administration Medicare official: Sanders and Warren’s ‘socialist experiments’ won’t work for seniors

Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator Seema Verma said Friday that proposals from 2020 presidential candidates like Senators Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., would “eviscerate” Medicare.

Appearing on “America’s Newsroom” with host Bill Hemmer, Verma said President Trump’s executive order – which would expand the program’s private insurance option – is “all about demonstrating his vision to protect and secure the Medicare program.”

In the executive order, the Trump administration claims his Medicare plan will:

  • Provide more plan choices and time with providers
  • Streamline approval of therapies
  • Reform link payments with value
  • Eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse
  • Reduce regulation

‘MEDICARE-FOR-ALL’ SPONSOR SAYS PLAN WOULD GUT 1 MILLION PRIVATE INSURANCE JOBS

“He’s just building on the tremendous success that we’ve already had with the program,” she told Hemmer. “President Trump’s Medicare program is putting money back into the pockets of seniors. We’ve lowered out-of-pocket costs for drugs and for doctors’ visits.”

She added that Medicare Advantage rates were announced at historic lows, citing lower Part D premiums and decreases in drug pricing.

Medicare itself remains popular, but 2020 Democratic presidential candidates’ calls to enact a single-payer, government-run system for everyone are far more controversial. Speaking to a retirement community in Florida on Thursday, the president said Democrats want to “raid Medicare to fund the idea of socialism.”

“All of the Democrats’ plans would totally devastate our health care plans,” he exclaimed.

Sanders’ “single-payer” approach would cover people of any age and would incorporate the Medicare program. Private health insurance, including the Medicare Advantage option used by about one-third of seniors, would no longer have a role.

Sanders, who underwent a heart procedure this week, has argued that “Medicare-for-all” would offer seniors broader benefits and lower costs.

“In all of these versions, whether it’s ‘Medicare-for-all’ or the public option … what they’re talking about is a government takeover of our private health care system stripping 180 million Americans from private coverage and putting them into a government-run program,” Verma explained.

“What we’ve seen from other countries that have tried these socialist experiments is that that leads to reductions in care, reduced access, long wait times, and rationing of care,” she said.

FELLOW 2020 CANDIDATE CALLS BERNIE’S ‘MEDICARE-FOR-ALL’ PLAN A ‘LOSING BATTLE’ THAT WILL SET COUNTRY BACK 10 YEARS

“These types of options that we’re hearing from people, would eviscerate the Medicare program. and, it would put our seniors in a situation where they’re waiting in line for their care,” Verma stated.

“President Trump has a very different vision,” she concluded. “He wants to strengthen and protect the Medicare program, make it better for seniors.”

Opioid doctor’s 40-year sentence is stark reminder of widespread overdose epidemic

A doctor in Virginia was sentenced this week to 40 years in prison for illegally prescribing opioids, a practice that saw him dole out more than 500,000 doses of opioids between 2015 and 2017 to patients from Virginia, Kentucky, West Virginia, Ohio and Tennessee, resulting in at least one death.

Dr. Joel Smithers was convicted in May of over 800 counts of illegally distributing opioids, including oxycodone and oxymorphone, and while the father of five maintains that he was acting as a caring physician who was deceived by patients, the painkillers are part of a class of drugs being blamed for a stark increase in opioid deaths in the U.S.

OHIO CORONER SAYS OPIOID CRISIS IS ‘NOT GOING AWAY’ AFTER 10 DEATHS IN HER COUNTY IN JUST OVER A DAY

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), of the 702,568 overdose deaths during 1999-2017, 399,230 involved opioids. In 2017, 47,600 of the 70,237 overdose deaths involved opioids, an increase of 12 percent from the year prior. In 2016, 66.4 percent of the 63,632 overdose deaths involved a prescription opioid, with the epidemic touching all age groups, races and ethnicities.

And while the hardest-hit state, West Virginia, was one where Smithers was convicted of distributing opioids, it was more than one doctor and more than one drug that spurred the crisis. Illicit opioids including fentanyl and other synthetic drugs are also to blame for the spike.

AS DOCTORS TAPER OR END OPIOID PRESCRIPTIONS, MANY PATIENTS DRIVEN TO DESPAIR, SUICIDE

Between 2016 and 2017, the CDC found an increase of almost 47 percent in overdose deaths involving synthetic opioids other than methadone.

Opioids, which range in potency, are often used to treat chronic and acute pain, and when used appropriately can be a solution for patients. But the drugs also come with serious risks, including addiction, or the potential for misuse, overdose and possibly even death.

Big pharma has played a large role in the overdose epidemic as well, with Purdue Pharma recently agreeing on a $10 billion tentative settlement with 24 states over the crisis. In Oklahoma, a judge ordered Johnson & Johnson to pay out $572 million over marketing and sales practices of powerful opioids.

While the CDC has reported that the prescribing rate in the U.S. has been declining since 2012, it’s still triple the amount than it was in 1999. In 2017, the agency reported almost 58 opioid prescriptions written for every 100 Americans, and the average number of days per prescription averaging around 18.

In an effort to combat overprescribing practices, in 2016 the CDC released guidelines that saw many physicians taper down or end chronic pain patients’ prescriptions, leaving them in pain or turning toward illicit drugs or even suicide to find relief.

“We have a terrible problem. We have people committing suicide for no other reason than being forced to stop opioids, pain medication, for chronic pain,” Thomas Kline, a North Carolina family doctor and former Harvard Medical School program administrator, previously told Fox News.

“It’s mass hysteria, a witch hunt. It’s one of the worst health care crises in our history,” said Kline. “There are 5 to 7 million people being tortured on purpose.”

PERDUE PHARMA REACHES TENTATIVE SETTLEMENT IN OPIOID LAWSUIT, BUT SOME STATES NOT ON BOARD

The move provided neither a solution for patients nor the nation’s overdose data, which saw a drop in painkiller prescriptions but overdose deaths continuing to soar. In June 2019, the CDC was forced to issue updated guidelines urging physicians not to cut patients off abruptly.

“CDC commends efforts by healthcare providers and systems, quality improvement organizations, payers, and states to improve opioid prescribing and reduce opioid misuse and overdose,” the guidelines read. “However, some policies and practices that cite the Guideline are inconsistent with, and go beyond its recommendations.”

Elsewhere, the tech industry has entered the ring in a bid to help combat the staggering overdose numbers in the U.S. In September, which is recognized as “National Recovery Month,” Google featured a promotion on its homepage linking out to its new “Recover Together” website, which features recovery stories and resources. It also lets users find more than 33,000 locations providing recovery services, and a Naloxone Locator, which is where people can find the overdose reversal drug without a prescription.

DOCTORS CAUGHT BETWEEN STRUGGLING OPIOID PATIENTS AND CRACKDOWN ON PRESCRIPTIONS

The FDA has also called for more access to naloxone, which is currently approved by the agency in three different forms but requires a prescription. In most states, a pharmacist can dispense naloxone under a standing order, and many have also given pharmacists direct authority to prescribe and sell it to consumers.

However, the agency said misunderstandings or misinterpretations of the order are still causing roadblocks for many in search of naloxone, preventing the life-saving drug from getting to the people who need it. The FDA said it was working with federal state and local officials as well as health care providers to clear up any miscommunications and increase the availability of the drug in all forms.

“Ultimately, the goal of increasing access to all forms of naloxone is to make this potentially life-saving treatment available to individuals at risk of an overdose – such as those with a history of overdose or substance use disorder – and those in the community most likely to observe an overdose,” the agency said in a news release.

1840 shipwreck reveals trove of gold coins that could be worth millions

A steamship that sank in 1840 after colliding with another ship off the coast of South Carolina contains a trove of rare gold coins, according to the dive team salvaging the wreck.

The SS North Carolina sank on July 25, 1840, after colliding with its sister ship, the Governor Dudley.

In a statement, Blue Water Ventures International and Endurance Exploration Group explained that the dive team and the recovery vessel arrived at the site in late September. “Gold coins, marble, dinnerware, and brass spikes, used in the ship’s construction, were among the first shipwreck items to be found,” they said.

MYSTERIOUS 19TH-CENTURY SHIPWRECK DISCOVERED BY ACCIDENT IN THE GULF OF MEXICO

The collision did not result in any loss of life, as SS North Carolina’s passengers were safely transferred to the Governor Dudley. “However, passenger baggage and ship’s cargo were lost in the sinking,” said the companies involved in the salvage project. “It has been estimated that the hard currency lost on the SS North Carolina would be worth many millions of dollars in today’s value.”

“It is believed that some gold coins from the newly commissioned US Mint in Dahlonega in 1838 would have been in circulation prior to the sinking of the SS North Carolina in 1840, and if found, these coins would be extremely valuable in today’s collectors’ market,” the companies added in the statement.

The Charlotte Observer reports that the salvage effort is taking placing 20 miles off the coast of South Carolina. “After working the first half of the 2019 dive season on several wreck sites, some famous, some not, with the goal of future admiralty claims, it’s great to be back in recovery mode on the SS North Carolina, especially when you see gold coins the very first day on site!” said Blue Water Ventures International President Keith Webb in the statement.

Other shipwrecks discoveries have been grabbing attention recently. A mysterious shipwreck at the bottom of Newport Harbor is believed to be the famous HMS Endeavour, which Capt. James Cook sailed on when he discovered Australia.

In June, the wreck of what appears to be a British ship destroyed during the siege of Yorktown in 1781 was discovered in Virginia.

Earlier this year, a mysterious 19th-century shipwreck was discovered by researchers testing underwater drone equipment in the Gulf of Mexico. A team from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration aboard the exploration vessel Okeanos Explorer was testing the equipment on May 16 when the wreck was spotted.
