Fake website with Iranian ties targets US veterans, report says

Westlake Legal Group 515400-iranian-flag-iran Fake website with Iranian ties targets US veterans, report says fox-news/tech/topics/hackers fox news fnc/tech fnc f97e328d-fa40-57c2-a9e2-cb2c37a3d912 Brooke Crothers article

Researchers have unmasked a website masquerading as a job site for U.S. veterans that may have ties to Iran, according to media reports.

Researchers from security firm Cisco Talos reported this week that the website, Hire Military Heroes, was distributing malware that allows hackers to gain control of the victim’s computer, as reported by Bleeping Computer.

An interesting twist is that the hackers may also be targeting active servicemen and not just veterans, according to ZDNet, which cites that Iran may be behind the attack.

BEWARE OF CREEPY ‘SIM SWAP’ FRAUD THAT LETS HACKERS TAKE OVER YOUR PHONE AND STEAL YOUR MONEY

A cybersecurity analyst from the Department of Homeland Security, speaking on background, told ZDNet that the attackers are aiming at military networks.

“They [the hackers] are hoping that one of their targets would use a DOD system to download and run the malware,” the analyst told the news outlet. “Chances are low, but it’s worth a shot…Pretty clever approach, if I can say so,” the analyst added, referring to the Department of Defense.

Fox News has reached out to Cisco regarding Iran’s reported involvement with the hack.

The bad actor had been previously identified by Symantec as Tortoiseshell, a group behind a previous attack on an IT provider in Saudi Arabia, according to Cisco Talos.

The fake veterans website has three links to download a desktop app for free — but the app is actually a fake installer. When the fake installer starts, the progress bar almost fills up entirely and then displays an error message.

“The installer checks if Google is reachable. If not, the installation stops. If it is reachable, the installer downloads two binaries [files],” according to Cisco Talos.

CHINESE CYBER HACKERS HAVE BUILT A BACKDOOR IN US-CHINA TRADE WAR, REPORT SAYS

One of the binary files is used to perform “reconnaissance” on the system and the second is the Remote Administrative Tool.

“The attacker retrieves information such as the date, time and drivers,” Cisco Talos researchers wrote in the report. “The attacker can then see information on the system, the patch level, the number of processors, the network configuration, the hardware, firmware versions, the domain controller, the name of the admin, the list of the account, etc. This is a significant amount of information relating to a machine and makes the attacker well-prepared to carry out additional attacks.”

Both the amount and the kind of information that is targeted makes the attacks particularly dangerous, Warren Mercer, a researcher at Cisco Talos, told Fox News.

“When you focus on the agenda of the attackers, it’s unlikely to be a garden variety attack…they certainly wanted something much more meaningful than your cat pictures,” Mercer said.

Mercer added that it’s difficult to assess the effectiveness of this attack since it was discovered before the operation went into high gear. “We did not identify any ‘in-the-wild’ activity associated and since our publication, the threat actor’s website is now unavailable.”

Cannon fodder is probably not something college football referees have to prepare for when going through training, but one official learned last weekend to keep his head on a swivel at all times.

A referee working a game between Maine Maritime Academy and Massachusetts Maritime Academy was shot in the face with a cannon blast Saturday.

FORMER COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYER RETURNS TO US AFTER SERVING 3 YEARS IN CHINA PRISON OVER BAR FIGHT

A video of the incident, obtained by News Center Maine, shows the referee walking toward the right of the end zone falling down and clutching at his face after the cannon blast goes off.

Luckily, the cannon wasn’t loaded with a cannonball. The referee was hit with black powder and a substance that was made into a “wad,” according to Bangor Daily News.

The referee was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

The Hancock County Sheriff’s Department said a Maine Maritime Academy alumnus brought the cannon to the game and fired it.

According to Bangor Daily News, the school said the cannon “was fired from outside the fence behind the end zone. One of the game officials was proceeding along the end line when the cannon was fired and was struck by packing material from the cannon. The Academy’s president has directed that these devices will no longer be permitted on campus for future events.”

An investigation into the incident was referred to the district attorney’s office pending possible criminal charges.

Bollinger Motors electric SUV and pickup revealed ahead of 2020 launch

Electric off-road truck startup Bollinger Motors has unwrapped the production-spec SUV and pickup it’s aiming to begin building next year.

The fledgling automaker emerged on the scene in 2017 with a boxy, battery-powered SUV prototype designed in Hobart, N.Y., but has since moved its headquarters near Detroit in order to tap into the vast automotive industry resources there.

The bare-bare bones trucks haven’t strayed too far from the original design, and feature a stripped-out interior and riveted aluminum body that wouldn’t look out of place in a military motor pool, but hides high-tech equipment underneath.

Called the B1 and B2, the four-door SUV and pickup are equipped with enormous 120-kilowatt-hour battery packs, dual electric motors with a combined output of 614 hp and 688 lb-ft of torque. Bollinger says the Class 3 (think Ford F-350) trucks can sprint to 60 mph in a sports car-like 4.5 seconds, carry over 5,000 pounds and tow 7,500 pounds.

The trucks ride on a fully independent adjustable hydro-pneumatic suspension that provides a nominal ground clearance of 15 inches (a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon is set at 10.9 inches) and can be raised or lowered five inches. Both have removable roof panels and the front wall of the pickup’s bed can be dropped down to extend it into the cabin, similar to how the Chevrolet Avalanche worked.

ELECTRIC PICKUPS ARE THE NEXT BIG THING IN ELECTRIC VEHICLES

They also have front trunks and front gates that can be opened to provide a full pass-through down the center of the truck for long items like wood beams.

The exact range hasn’t been finalized, but the company has previously indicated that it will be at least 200 miles per charge. Pricing for the low-volume vehicles is still very much a grey area, but founder Robert Bollinger has previously said he is aiming for well under $100,000, which could pit it directly against the smaller but more luxurious Rivan R1S and R1T electric pickup and SUV that are also set to go on sale next year.

‘Crypt-keeper’ wasp able to control the minds of its victims

A recently discovered wasp can apparently control the minds of its victims.

Euderus set, otherwise known as the crypt-keeper wasp, has the uncanny ability to control the actions of multiple species of gall wasps, enabling them to be parasitized and die in a horrific fashion.

Galls are abnormal, tumor-like growths on oak trees created by gall wasps as a shelter for their larvae. Once the gall wasp larvae become adults, they eat their way out of the gall and fly away. The crypt-keeper wasp (named after the Egyptian god Set who trapped his brother in a crypt before killing him) also deposits its eggs in the gall. Crypt-keeper larvae then burrow into the gall wasp hatchlings.

WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHER CAPTURES IMAGES OF DRAGONFLIES COVERED IN DEW: IT ‘CLUNG TO THEIR BODIES LIKE JEWELS’

A host gall wasp matures and begins to chew its way out of the gall as it normally would, but then, as observed by researchers from University of Iowa and Rice University, something strange happens: the host gall wasp quits eating its way out, making a hole only large enough for its head to squeeze through.

“When the gall wasp is attacked by Euderus set (the crypt keeper), the gall wasp still starts to chew an exit hole but fails to emerge and results in what we referred to as a ‘head plug’,” the study’s lead author, Anna Ward of the University of Iowa, told Fox News. “We identified head plugs by observed wasps that had stopped chewing their exit holes and were unresponsive – and visually looks like a wasp head blocking a hole in the gall.”

After feeding on the gall wasp’s body from the inside, the crypt-keeper wasp burrows out of the hosts’ head. Alien, eat your heart out.

What’s baffling researchers is how the crypt-keeper larva, once inside the gall wasp, is somehow manipulating its host to eat such a small hole, leaving only the host’s head exposed.

“Currently, we are not certain of the mechanism in which E. set is manipulating its host,” Ward explained. “Though we predict that this is a simple mechanism that involves stopping or paralyzing the host at the right moment where it has chewed part of the exit hole but before it emerges.”

SPIDERS ARE GETTING ANGRIER BECAUSE OF EVOLUTIONARY TRICK TO SURVIVE ‘CLIMATE CHAOS’

To study this phenomenon, the researchers had the odious task of collecting galls in the wild, eventually gathering over 23,000 of the wasp-made shelters with over 100 species of gall wasps, along with some Crypt-keepers, inside. According to Ward, collecting the galls themselves wasn’t all that difficult.

“Oak galls are fairly common throughout North America and are found on all species of oak trees,” she said. “In order to collect the wasps, we simply collect the galls that the wasp is developing inside of.”

The team then brought those galls back to their lab and waited for the wasps to emerge, where they could observe the occasional crypt-keeper wasp in action. They eventually observed the crypt-keepers bursting out of the heads of 305 wasps from seven different gall wasp species.

The crypt-keepers were choosy about their victims as well, preferring gall wasps without spikes or fur on their bodies.

A Philadelphia Eagles fan who made the trip to Lambeau Field to watch his team take on the Green Bay Packers gave the viewing audience a little more than they bargained for after he tossed his shirt.

The fan sported several tattoos across his chest in what seemed to be an homage to the City of Brotherly Love.

The tattoos included the Eagles’ logo, the Interstate 95 sign, the Liberty Bell, the Philadelphia skyline and the Phillie Phanatic — the mascot of the Philadelphia Phillies.

Social media users quickly pointed out how odd the Phillie Phanatic tattoo was. The mascot’s snout appeared around the man’s belly button.

Another photo from an earlier game showed the man at a different angle and before his chest tattoos were shaded in. It appears the man also had a tattoo that read “We the People” on his left bicep.

The man was later identified by WPVI-TV as Robert Dunphy. He told the station he traveled to Wisconsin overnight to catch his favorite team take on the Packers at the historic NFL stadium.

“I wanted to see Lambeau which is a historic landmark. Now we’re watching the Eagles beat up on the Packers,” he told the station.

The Eagles defeated the Packers, 31-27, and gave Dunphy some hope for how the season is going to turn out.

“caring less, doing more,” she wrote on Twitter along with a photo of herself smiling at the camera while leaning up against a car in booty shorts. “hold on tightly to what ur grateful for.”

Except for one tweet in August, the posts were her first since July 2018.
