Biden responds to Trump’s ‘stone-cold crooked’ slam

Onetime Vice President Joe Biden, a frontrunner in the Democratic presidential primary, responded on Wednesday to President Trump calling him and his son Hunter “stone-cold crooked,” calling for the focus to remain on alleged misdeeds by Trump that have sparked a House impeachment inquiry.

“Biden and his son are stone-cold crooked. And you know it,” Trump told reporters Wednesday during a joint press conference with the president of Finland. Trump was referring to allegations that he pressed Ukraine’s leader in a July phone call to investigate Biden, his son Hunter and their business dealings in that country.

Referencing Hunter Biden’s board seat with a Ukrainian firm despite a lack of experience, Trump said: “His son walks out with millions of dollars. And the kid knows nothing.”

TRUMP BLASTS BIDEN AS ‘STONE-COLD CROOKED’ IN EXPLOSIVE PRESS CONFERENCE

During a March for Our Lives conference, Biden reacted, saying there is “zero, zero, zero, zero evidence of any assertion being made.”

“Look,” Biden said, “the issue is this president of the United States engaged in something … which at minimum gives a lot of running room for the Russian and Ukraine. I think we should just focus on he’s the issue.

“Nobody has ever asserted that I did anything wrong except he and what’s that fella’s name, Rudy ‘Hudy’… Giuliani. That’s it,” Biden continued, referencing Trump’s personal attorney, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who like Trump has alleged Biden misdeeds in Ukraine.

Biden said he’d like to get back to talking about guns and lethal gun violence in America, since Trump hasn’t done “anything rational relating to guns.”

“I know he did have time for one meeting. [NRA head] Wayne LaPierre spent some time with him, in return, I suspect for help in his impeachment proceeding,” Biden continued.

A New York Times report on Friday alleged LaPierre promised financial support for the president’s defense in upcoming political fights over impeachment if Trump would “stop the games” on gun control legislation. The NRA has denied its chief executive had any such conversation with the president.

Trump has been accused of freezing military aid for Ukraine over the summer, then using the money as leverage to spark an investigation of the Bidens’ business arrangements in that nation. A whistleblower complaint has kicked off a House impeachment inquiry, looking at whether the president might have, in this fashion, encouraged foreign meddling in the 2020 election to undermine the former vice president, a leading Trump rival.

The president has vehemently denied any wrongdoing, calling the inquiry an effort by Dems, who control the House, to win 2020 via impeachment.

Andrew McCarthy: Dems and media friends falsely portray Trump’s Ukraine call – Impeachment NOT justified

In my weekend column, I observed the media-Democrat complex’s politicized reporting of the July 25 conversation between President Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart:

Trump detractors hyper-focus on the president’s request that President [Volodymyr] Zelensky provide Attorney General [William] Barr with any information Ukraine might have about [former Vice President Joe] Biden twisting arms to quash an investigation involving his son’s cashing in on dad’s influence. I say “hyper-focus” because there was a lot more to it than that. Long before the conversation came around to the Biden topic, the “favor” that Trump asked for was Zelensky’s assistance in Barr’s ongoing investigation of the genesis of the Trump-Russia investigation.

Virtually all mainstream-media reporting and Democratic commentary on the conversation now fits this pattern. It is noted that Trump, immediately after the “quid pro quo” set-up — “I would like you to do us a favor though” — invoked the attorney general, the nation’s top federal law-enforcement official. Studiously omitted is the context of this invocation: a wholly appropriate request by the president, to the head of state of a country in possession of relevant evidence, for cooperation with a legitimate investigation being conducted by our country’s Justice Department.

Instead, the coverage skips a few hundred words. It cuts directly to Trump’s suggestion that Zelensky look into whether there was any impropriety Biden’s having purportedly “stopped the prosecution” that might have arisen out of a Ukrainian investigation involving his son.

The strategy here is obvious. Democrats and their note-takers would like the public to believe that Barr’s investigation is an adjunct of the Trump 2020 campaign — and a grossly improper one at that. The misimpression they seek to create is that Barr is putting the nation’s law-enforcement powers in the service of Trump’s reelection campaign, in the absence of any public interest. The hope is that this will delegitimize not only any information that emerges from Ukraine but the whole of the Justice Department’s investigation of intelligence and law-enforcement abuses of power attendant to the 2016 election.

Universal Orlando actor fired for making symbol associated with white supremacy

A Universal Orlando actor who dressed as “Gru” from the “Despicable Me” animated movie franchise has been fired after allegedly making a hand gesture associated with white supremacists in a photo with a biracial girl.

The photo with the girl, now 7, who is autistic, shows her posing with the actor during a character breakfast at Loews Royal Pacific Resort, a Universal hotel, in March.

The photo shows the actor making an upside-down “OK” symbol with his hand on the girl’s shoulder. The gesture is widely associated with white supremacy and far-right groups.

Universal spokesman Tom Schroder told USA Today the actor, who has not been publicly identified, no longer works for the company.

“We never want our guests to experience what this family did. This is not acceptable and we are sorry – and we are taking steps to make sure nothing like this happens again,” he said in a statement. “We can’t discuss specifics about this incident, but we can confirm that the actor no longer works here. We remain in contact with the family and will work with them privately to make this right.”

Calls and messages from Fox News to Universal Orlando were not immediately returned.

The girl’s parents — Tiffiney Zinger, who is black, and her husband, Richard, who is white — noticed the symbol while scrolling through vacation photos in August. The family traveled from Colorado to Orlando for the breakfast.

“We just wanted to take them to see the Minions,” Tiffiney Zinger told the newspaper, referring to the popular, pill-shaped henchmen in the “Despicable Me” films. “Do something special for our family. And this person ruined that special warm feeling.”

The couple dug deeper and found a video taken of the moment the photo was taken. The 29-second clip shows the actor placing his hand behind the girl’s shoulder and curling his right thumb and index finger to make the “OK” symbol.

Brenton Tarrant, the Australian man charged with killing 51 people at mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, in March, flashed the “OK” symbol during a courtroom appearance after his arrest.

“It’s more than the “OK” sign,” Richard Zinger said. “A lot of people don’t understand what that sign means.”

The Anti-Defamation League has added the gesture to its online database of hate symbols.

In a global pandemic, which countries are safest havens?

If a pandemic were to sweep the globe, where would you want to be? Where would you be safe, and uninfected, and (worst-case scenario) unchomped by plague-carrying zombies?

New Zealand, Australia and Iceland could act as islands of refuge for humankind in the event of a catastrophe, according to a new paper from researchers published in the international journal Risk Analysis.

The researchers said the risk of human extinction has likely never been greater, even as technology has advanced.

“Discoveries in biotechnology could see a genetically engineered pandemic threaten the survival of our species. Though carriers of disease can easily circumvent land borders, a closed, self-sufficient island could harbor an isolated, technologically adept population that could repopulate the Earth following a disaster,” Nick Wilson, co-author of the study and a professor at the University of Otago in New Zealand, said in a statement.

The researchers produced a scoring system that took into account a range of characteristics for each island nation’s population, location, society and resources.

Their findings showed Australia to be the most favorable safe refuge on paper, because of its large oversupply of energy and food, according to a press release from the university. It was closely followed by New Zealand and then Iceland.

The researchers ranked island nations with populations of more than 250,000 as potential safe harbors, considering that the larger the population, the more likely it was that the country would at some point be able to reboot civilization.

The lead author of the study, Matt Boyd, research director at Adapt Research, said humans might one day unleash a modified organism with the potential to kill humankind.

“The worst-case scenario could see multiple genetically engineered pandemic organisms being released at once. We need to be ready for these situations. Our study shows that certain island nations have the characteristics needed to preserve technological culture through a catastrophic event.”

The scientists suggest that places like New Zealand should consider making preparations ahead of time, possibly be investing in resiliency measures and practicing border controls.

The research paper, titled “The Prioritization of Island Nations as Refuges from Extreme Pandemics,” was published in the journal Risk Analysis.

9 dead, hundreds wounded in two days of antigovernment protests in Iraq

Nine people were killed and hundreds more wounded over the past two days as antigovernment protests turned violent in Iraq.

Seven died in Wednesday’s protests, three in Baghdad and four in Nasiriyah, while some 132 were wounded. Two more died in Tuesday’s protests — more than 200 were hurt — as demonstrators and Iraqi security forces clashed in the largest public outcry since Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi’s government was formed a year ago.

Amid the hectic demonstrations, a 10-year-old girl was killed by a car speeding away from a checkpoint.

Thousands have taken to the streets in recent days to express anger over unemployment, a lack of government services such as electricity and water, and rampant corruption in the oil-rich nation. The unemployment rate in Iraq for 2018 stood at 7.9 percent, according to World Bank data.

WHERE DOES MEXICO REALLY GET ITS GUNS?

Hundreds of heavily armed security forces and riot police deployed on Baghdad streets. They opened fire on demonstrators and launched tear gas to disperse rioters. Guards blocked all major intersections leading to a central square on Wednesday to prevent a repeat of Tuesday’s protests.

On Tuesday, more than 1,000 descended upon central Tahrir Square as some tried to cross the bridge to reach the fortified Green Zone, home to government offices and foreign embassies.

By midafternoon on Wednesday, residents said authorities had shut down social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp. The protests appear to be organized on social media without any political leadership.

The protests began peacefully on Tuesday, but after security forces fought back with tear gas, water cannons and live ammunition, protesters reacted by throwing stones and setting tires and trash cans on fire.

Tahrir Square, Baghdad’s major commercial center, was a ghost town over the past two days as all shops and restaurants closed down.

Protests spanned across at least seven other provinces in the country. An estimated 3,000 protesters took to the streets in the southern city of Basra on Wednesday evening.

Both the United Nations and the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad have expressed concern over violence ramping up amidst the demonstrations. The United Nations called on authorities to exercise restraint. “Every individual has the right to speak freely, in keeping with the law,” U.N. Special Representative Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert said in a statement.

“The right to demonstrate peacefully is a fundamental right in all democracies, but there is no place for violence in demonstrations from any side,” the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad posted on Twitter.

McDonald’s register hacked to run classic video game ‘Doom’

This is probably the best thing that’s ever been done with a McDonald’s cash register.

A clever 19-year-old video game fan was able to figure out a way to play the classic “Doom” on a McDonald’s cash register. While most people are using these things to ring in orders of extra fries and Happy Meals, this guy is fighting off the armies of Hell.

Ryan Edgar spoke with the tech blog Kotaku Australia about how he got the game to run. Edgar was reportedly able to get his hands on a McDonald’s register when a local restaurant was updating its system and getting rid of old devices.

According to Kotaku, the registers are basically computers programmed to run a specific point-of-sale software developed by McDonald’s. Edgar was able to access the machine’s Task Manager.

“I was able to run explorer.exe by doing CTRL ALT DEL to get to Task Manager but there was some weird encryption on it,” Edgar told Kotaku Australia.

Edgar shared his achievement on Twitter, where social media users were clearly impressed.

One user commented, “My favorite tech feat remains: getting DOOM to run on devices that have no business running it.”

Another user joked, “I want a challenge…I want to see if we can get DOOM to run on an old computer from the 40s. That’s right, an entire room-sized computer.”

For some, however, the fact that McDonald’s registers are capable of running video games just compounded other problems customers have with the fast-food franchise. As one user put it, “Oh sure ice cream machine broke but you can still run doom back here I see how it is.”

‘Stumptown’ star Cobie Smulders credits Tom Cruise for helping her prepare for stunt-heavy role in P.I. drama

Cobie Smulders is giving credit where it’s due.

The 37-year-old actress wasted no time explaining to reporters during the Television Critics Association summer press tour just how influential Tom Cruise was showing her the ropes in the stunt world as she prepared for her role in the exciting, high-action police drama “Stumptown.”

COBIE SMULDERS REVEALS SHE HAD OVARIAN CANCER AT AGE 25

“Yeah, I mean when I worked with Tom [Cruise] on ‘[Jack] Reacher,’ that was when I learned the most I had up until then about training, about fighting, about stunts, about how to do everything safely because he was such a pro at just doing everything correctly and really well,” Smulders said about acting alongside the “Top Gun” franchise star in “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back.”

The longtime Marvel mainstay, who portrayed S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Maria Hill in six Marvel Cinematic Universe films, beginning with the “Avengers,” said her “Stumptown” role was perfect for her, especially considering her character Dex Parios is a quick-witted army veteran-turned-private investigator.

“Everything about her challenges me but that’s what excites me,” Smulders told reporters. “It doesn’t make me afraid. I mean, it’s physically wearing but you’re not really getting hurt. If you if you’re getting hurt, someone’s not doing their job right.”

Smulders, 37, whose husband comedian and actor Taran Killam, 37, is a series regular on fellow ABC show “Single Parents,” said she was even more drawn to Dex because of her willingness to fearlessly say what’s on her mind.

COBIE SMULDERS EXPLAINS WHY SHE POSED TOPLESS

“I just like her. I like the way that she rolls with however she’s feeling, you know,” Smulders explained. “I like playing sort of a sexually ambiguous woman on network television. I like that she’s sort of her own boss. I like that she just doesn’t really have – there are no rules for her. So that excited me.”

The “How I Met Your Mother” alum continued: “We’re still trying to figure out the tone of this right because there is a certain, you know, P.I. way of talking, you know. Kind of like this sassy one-liner, which I don’t think kind of – it doesn’t fit quite right but there is a moment and a place for it or to take that rhythm and modernize it.”

“So it’s usually her humor is coming situationally. But I think that there will be opportunities. For there’s a lot of physical comedy but then also just really funny lines,” she added.

But for Smulders – it was the quality of life she sought and, in becoming an executive producer on the graphic-novel-adapted series, Smulders is happy that she can spend more time with her family.

COBIE SMULDERS SHARES HER STAY-FIT TRICKS

“First of all, it’s such a blessing I was on ‘How I Met Your Mother’ for so long and that’s shot in Los Angeles and I was allowed to have a life in the city,” she said. “And I’ve been off of it for five years now and traveling so much, I just feel that it takes a hit to a family. But it’s so nice – there are going to be really long hours and it’s going to be really physically draining but I get to go and sleep in my own bed and my child will probably come at 6 a.m. into that bed.”

Smulders told reporters she looks forward to her daughters Shaelyn, 10, and Janita, 4, being able to witness their mother in her element and even said she’s teaching them how to perform stunts of their own just in case the rough-housing gets a little out of hand.

“There are certainly sacrifices, but also it excites me I have two girls and it’s exciting for them to see their mother having a career and having dreams and fulfilling goals,” she said. “That’s what I tell myself anyways to sleep at night. You do your best and I’m a very hands-on parent and everybody who’s involved in this project knows that and has been extremely accommodating thus far.”

When asked how her daughters usually react to seeing their mother fake being battered and bruised after an intense fight scene, Smulders added: “I walk them through how to do stunts, how to make it look real but it’s not really.”

“Quite honestly, they don’t watch a lot of television,” she continued. “I don’t think they’ve seen an episode of ‘How I Met Your Mother’ or anything from the ‘Avengers.’ They’re still really little and they don’t see that on me in person. So I try to explain sort of the choreography involved and that actually is kind of – like it’s funny to them.”

Alabama sees 1st vaping-linked death as US toll rises to 15

Health officials in Alabama on Wednesday confirmed the first death in the state attributed to vaping.

The patient, whose name and age were not revealed, was a man from East Alabama. No other details were provided by the Alabama Department of Public Health.

NEBRASKA SEES 1ST VAPING-LINKED DEATH

“As of October 1, there were 19 Alabama residents under investigation. Of the 19 reports, 4 cases have been identified and 9 other reports are still under investigation in Alabama; 3 have been identified as probable cases; 1 confirmed case (the deceased), of lung disease associated with vaping,” officials with the state’s health department said in a news release.

“The use of any tobacco product is unsafe. While this current outbreak is being investigated, the safest option is to refrain from using any e-cigarette or vape product. Furthermore, there is no situation in which these devices should be used by pregnant women or youths,” said State Health Officer Dr. Scott Harris, in a statement.

To date, there have been 15 vaping-linked deaths in the U.S. State, local and federal health officials – namely those with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) – are still investigating the cause behind the lung illnesses.

Late last week, the CDC described a possible link between the current outbreak of vaping-related lung injuries and the use of THC-containing vaping products.

The CDC’s findings indicated that out of 514 patients with suspected vaping-related illnesses, 77 reported that they had been using products containing THC, or using both nicotine- and THC-containing products.

Additionally, a recent Washington Post investigation concluded that the illnesses affecting hundreds of Americans may be linked to black-market vaping products, some of which are allegedly cut with vitamin E acetate.

However,  federal health officials have not yet linked the illnesses to a specific product, substance or additive. They continue to investigate the 805 vaping-related lung illness cases reported across 46 states and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The news of the Alabama resident’s death comes after New Jersey and Nebraska health officials announced the first deaths linked to vaping in their respective states.

Hurricane Lorenzo lashes Azores with high waves, heavy rain as storm takes aim at British Isles

Hurricane Lorenzo lashed the Azores Islands with heavy rains, powerful winds and high waves Wednesday, before transitioning to a strong post-tropical system that is taking aim at Ireland and the United Kingdom for the end of the week.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami issued its last advisory on the storm at 11 a.m. as it transitioned to a post-tropical cyclone. It said the storm had maximum sustained winds of 80 mph and was located about 945 miles west-southwest of Cork, Ireland, as it moved northeast at 43 mph.

“Only slow weakening is forecast during the next day or so, and the system is expected to be a strong extratropical cyclone when it approaches Ireland Thursday afternoon and evening,” forecasters said. “A faster rate of weakening is expected when the cyclone moves over Ireland and England.”

Hurricanes the size of Lorenzo are rare so far north and east in the Atlantic basin. Lorenzo is producing huge swells across the North Atlantic that were being felt along the eastern coasts of the United States and Canada, in the Bahamas, and in parts of western Europe.

The storm is a “very large cyclone,” according to forecasters, who said hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 150 miles from the center, while tropical storm-force winds stretch outward up to 390 miles.

In the Portuguese islands, the weather agency said the most affected islands in the Azores archipelago were Flores and Corvo, where weather stations reported gusts of up to 101 mph, which was lower than forecast as Lorenzo lost some power over cooler water.

Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa said he had spoken to Azores officials at daybreak and the hurricane risk had peaked without major incident. The Category 2 hurricane brought down trees and power lines as it skirted to the west of the island chain.

“Fortunately, everything indicates that things have not turned out as badly as we feared,” Costa told reporters in Lisbon.

Azores Civil Protection Agency chief Carlos Neves said 39 people were safely evacuated and no injuries were reported. He said the main port on the island of Flores had suffered “grave damage” as part of the dock, the port’s building and some cargo containers had been “swallowed” by the sea, according to the Associated Press.

Around 250,000 people live on the Azores’ nine volcanic islands and the archipelago is a popular tourist destination, famed for its lakes, mountains and volcanic craters. School classes were canceled and government offices were closed as people were told to remain indoors Wednesday. Azores airline SATA canceled all flights to the archipelago, and some islands closed their ports.

Forecasters said Lorenzo will “likely be a fairly vigorous cyclone” when it reaches Ireland late Thursday.

Lorenzo previously was a Category 5 hurricane, the strongest storm ever observed so far north and east in the Atlantic basin. The rough seas generated by the storm have been blamed for sinking a tugboat that was carrying 14 crew members about 1,200 nautical miles off Martinique.

The Bourbon Rhode, a tug supply vessel built in 2006, was about 60 nautical miles east of the eye from Hurricane Lorenzo — then a Category 4 storm — when the crew reported trouble on Thursday. The three crew members, who were rescued by a commercial vessel that was in the area to assist rescue teams, were under medical observation.

On Wednesday, the company said the body of a fourth crew member had been discovered the previous day and transferred to the French Navy’s “Ventôse” frigate.

“On behalf of BOURBON, I would like to express our condolences to the family and friends of the deceased seafarer,” Bourbon CEO Gaël Bodénès said in a statement. “We are at their side to accompany them through this terrible ordeal. Despite significant search resources for the rescue of the crew, the fate of the missing is an ever-increasing source of anxiety for the families.”

Bodénès, who described the search and rescue effort as “unprecedented,” expressed gratitude to all those who have been involved in the work to find the remaining crew members. Since operations started on Sept. 26, 10 commercial vessels have been mobilized in the area and several aircraft — including a French Navy Falcon 50, U.S. Coast Guard C-130 Hercules — have joined the French Navy to search for the missing sailors.

Lorenzo is producing huge swells across the North Atlantic as it moves northeast toward Ireland and the United Kingdom that were being felt along the eastern coasts of the United States and Canada, in the Bahamas, and in parts of western Europe.

The swells are bringing life-threatening surf and rip currents, forecasters warned.

Seattle Seahawks linebacker Shaquem Griffin and twin brother Seahawks cornerback Shaquill Griffin sat down with Fox Nation host Tyrus to discuss their upbringing, the effect that Shaquem’s amputation had on him and his family, and the challenges that Shaquem faced as the only player in the NFL with one hand.

“I always had to be a step ahead because…everybody is going to say, ‘You got one hand — you can’t do this.'”

— Shaquem Griffin

“I always had to be a step ahead because me being even or me being a step behind is not good enough. Everybody going to say ‘You got one hand –you can’t do this,'” Griffin said in the latest episode of Fox Nation’s “Nuff Said.”

Shaquem Griffin suffered from amniotic band syndrome, a congenital birth defect that hindered his ability to partake in day-to-day activities as a child.

GRIFFIN TWINS SHARE INSPIRATIONAL STORY IN NEW BOOK

As a result, Griffin spent much of his toddler years in what he described as “extreme pain,” and discussed the family’s decision to amputate his hand when he was 4 years old.

“I would just wake up crying, screaming,” he explained,  “and it was just that one night where… I don’t know that 4-year-old mind feeling like if I cut my fingers, they won’t hurt me and I’d feel better after that.”

“So I went to the kitchen countertop… I got a knife out and I just remember my mom just picking me up taking me back to my room and putting the knife back down. And my brother’s crying… and that’s when my mom and dad had to make the decision,” he explained.

Griffin said he was grateful for his parent’s decision, and that it allowed him to live his life playing sports without pain or fear.

“I gained a feeling of comfort… of not being in pain anymore, I gained a feeling of being able to play sports, and I gained a feeling of being able to be active with my brothers,” Griffin explained.

As his twin brother Shaquill began to rise through the ranks as an NFL star himself, Shaquem longed to follow in his footsteps, vowing never to allow his handicap to hold him back.

Playing alongside his brother at the University of Central Florida (UCF), Griffin garnered a collection of awards, including the 2019 NCAA Inspiration Award, the 2018 Peach Bowl Defensive MVP, and the 2016 American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year — all with the help of a prosthetic left hand.

At one point in the episode, Griffin got emotional as he described a challenging time in his life when he was initially passed up in the 2018 NFL draft, and how he internalized the rejection.

“At that time it wasn’t about just me being drafted. It was about me sharing that experience that we never thought I would have,” he explained.

“I gave it everything,” Griffin continued, “like everything I have and it’s crazy because you talk about go 100 percent,  go 110. But I always had to do double that first because I always had to do extra. I always had to do more.”

Months later, Griffin received an invitation to the 2018 NFL Draft, and was selected by the Seattle Seahawks in the fifth round, reuniting him with his brother Shaquill. In May of 2018, Griffin signed a four-year deal worth $2.8 million.

Promoting their new book “Inseparable: How Family and Sacrifice Forged a Path to the NFL,” the twin brothers discussed their mission to give back, and the organization they started to help other struggling teens.

“We want to help change people’s lives,” they explained.
