Pelosi accuses White House of ‘cover-up’ over Ukraine call

Westlake Legal Group 694940094001_6089709869001_6089701983001-vs Pelosi accuses White House of 'cover-up' over Ukraine call fox-news/world/conflicts/ukraine fox-news/politics/house-of-representatives fox-news/person/nancy-pelosi fox-news/person/donald-trump fox news fnc/politics fnc article Andrew O'Reilly 276f1ffa-d97e-54cf-8522-60aea0651cfc

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., responded Thursday to allegations that the Trump White House sought to limit access to the written record of a now-controversial call between the president and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky by calling it “a cover-up” — suggesting the Democratic caucus will plow ahead with its impeachment inquiry.

Pelosi spoke to reporters after the release of a whistleblower complaint regarding Trump’s July call with Zelensky. The complaint said officials tried to “lock down” records of the call, in which Trump sought Ukraine’s help investigating the Biden family.

“This is a cover up,” Pelosi said. “Here we are with another example of the disregard for the Constitution by the president.”

READ THE WHISTLEBLOWER’S COMPLAINT

Pelosi added: “When you have a system for electronic storage that is specifically not used and you have something that is politically helpful for the president and you hide it someplace else, that is a cover-up.”

During a separate hearing on Capitol Hill, however, Acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire cautioned against jumping to conclusions on allegations of a “cover-up” and more, noting the complaint was not based on direct knowledge.

“This is second-hand information from a whistleblower,” Maguire said regarding the “cover-up” claim.

Pelosi’s comments come as the unnamed whistleblower’s complaints were made public, two days after she announced that the House was opening a formal impeachment inquiry over the issue.

The complaint alleges Trump abused the power of his office to “solicit interference from a foreign country” in next year’s U.S. election.

On the call, Trump allegedly pushed Zelensky to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter. Joe Biden has acknowledged that, when he was vice president, he successfully pressured Ukraine to fire its top prosecutor, Viktor Shokin, while Shokin was investigating the natural gas firm Burisma Holdings — where Hunter Biden was on the board. Shokin himself had separately been accused of corruption.

DEMS DOUBLE DOWN ON IMPEACHMENT AFTER UKRAINE TRANSCRIPT RELEASE

Trump has denied doing anything wrong and says the record of the call, which was released publicly on Wednesday, vindicates him of any wrongdoing.

“The president thinks this proves his innocence, which only shows how much he doesn’t understand right from wrong,” Pelosi said.

The House speaker has for months brushed off calls from her party’s more liberal members to open impeachment proceedings against Trump, but Thursday she bristled at the assertion that she had changed her mind about going forward.

“We wanted to have a fuller understanding of the facts,” she said. “I didn’t change my mind.”

“The president of the United States and his actions with a telephone call with another head of state betrayed his oath of office,” Pelosi added. “We have to have an inquiry to further the facts.”

As of Wednesday, a majority of House members have publicly supported impeachment proceedings against Trump, with 217 Democrats and independent Rep. Justin Amash all being in favor of opening the inquiry into the president.

One House member not supporting the impeachment push is House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., who in his weekly press briefing said that Pelosi opened the inquiry without any evidence against Trump.

“She opened impeachment inquiry without even seeing one word of evidence,” He said. “[E]ven her own members questioned that she moved too soon. And when the evidence was released the Democrats, and many of the media, twisted it to what they wanted to believe.”

Before the recent scandal involving the phone call with the Ukrainian president, numerous Democrats had pushed impeachment proceedings or even outright impeachment – mostly over the results of former Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Trump campaign links to Russia and whether Trump attempted to obstruct the probe.

That probe did not reach a conclusion on the obstruction issue and did not find evidence of collusion. Pelosi’s statement earlier in the week marks the first time Democratic Party leadership has gotten behind the impeachment effort.

Darrell Issa launches House bid against embattled fellow Republican Duncan Hunter

Westlake Legal Group 694940094001_6048069241001_6048069719001-vs Darrell Issa launches House bid against embattled fellow Republican Duncan Hunter fox-news/us/us-regions/west/california fox-news/politics/2020-house-races fox news fnc/politics fnc article Andrew O'Reilly 3b6dcf46-0a2b-5f21-9f57-0a066ba0b6ba

Former congressman Darrell Issa Thursday launched his election campaign for the seat in California’s 50th Congressional District – putting up a primary challenge to embattled Rep. Duncan Hunter.

Issa, a Republican, had declined to run for reelection in the 49th District in 2018 after winning his 2016 bid by less than one percentage point. But he now sees a chance to return to Capitol Hill and replace his fellow Republican, Hunter.

“I will be the next congressman from the 50th Congressional district,” Issa said during a news conference. “I have the history, the skills, the seniority and the capability to hit the ground running, not just for this district, but for California.”

ISSA LAUNCHES EXPLORATORY COMMITTEE

Hunter is running for a seventh term, but is battling charges that he siphoned campaign funds for personal use.

Issa’s entry brings more attention to what was already a closely watched race. It puts Hunter in an increasingly difficult position, given Issa’s wealth and long record of criticizing Obama, which could play well in one of Southern California’s last staunchly Republican districts.

Issa endeared himself to many conservatives as chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee from 2011 to 2015, where he was a vocal advocate for investigations into the Obama administration.

Last year, Hunter narrowly defeated Ammar Campa-Najjar, a young Democrat who came within 3.4 percentage points of winning the seat in his first run for Congress. He is running again in the March primary.

Campa-Najjar said Issa joining the field of candidates “just highlights the fact that Hunter is vulnerable and we’re viable, and that Washington insiders are scrambling to find somebody who could effectively challenge our campaign.”

Issa, a former nine-term congressman who made his fortune through a car-alarm company, formed an exploratory committee last month. He retired before the 2018 election from a district divided between San Diego and Orange counties that he narrowly won two years earlier. Democrat Mike Levin won the seat last November.

Issa’s decision comes after his Senate confirmation hearing to be director of the U.S. Trade and Development Agency was delayed indefinitely after Senate Foreign Relations Committee Ranking Member Bob Menendez insisted on the release of an FBI background file that sources say shows Issa used a fake ID when he was 17.

The focus on the fake ID he allegedly used as a 17-year-old Army private raised eyebrows, considering Issa had a well-known history of run-ins with the law when he was a teenager involving more serious accusations.

But, during the confirmation hearing, Menendez, D-N.J., argued that the committee did not have access to the information needed to determine whether Issa could be confirmed to his post, and said there was “problematic” information from his FBI background investigation that could be “potentially disqualifying.”

MSNBC’s Matthews on whistleblower complaint: Dems don’t need more hearings, ‘they’ve got him’

As he read the contents of the whistleblower complaint, MSNBC’s Chris Matthews declared Thursday that Democrats have the evidence they need to impeach President Trump.

The complaint alleged that Trump used the “power of his office to solicit interference” from a foreign country in the 2020 election — and that White House officials subsequently tried to “lock down” records of that phone call.

“He sought to pressure the Ukrainian leader, to take action to help the president’s 2020 reelection bid. There it is, that line. He did what he’s been accused of doing. It’s impeachable,” said Matthews, reading from the complaint, along with fellow MSNBC hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski.

TRUMP GOES ON THE OFFENSIVE, ALLEGES BIDEN CORRUPTION, SAYS DEMS THREATENED UKRAINE AID MULTIPLE TIMES

“It’s a moment, and Democrats, if they’ve got brains, and any political savvy– will grab this moment. No more hearings, no more subpoenas, no more contempt citations… they’ve got him.”

The rough transcript of the July call between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was released a day earlier by the White House. It confirmed that Trump sought an investigation from Ukraine into the Biden family, though it did not show the president explicitly leveraging U.S. aid as had initially been suggested in some media reports.

But the whistleblower complaint, released by the Democrat-led House Intelligence Committee ahead of testimony from Acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire, goes further, though it is not a first-hand account of the call.

The whistleblower, who remains anonymous, says in the complaint that White House officials who heard the call were “deeply disturbed” by it, and that White House lawyers discussed how to handle the call “because of the likelihood, in the officials’ retelling, that they had witnessed the president abuse his office for personal gain.”

“In the days following the phone call, I learned from multiple U.S. officials that senior White House officials had intervened to ‘lock down’ all records of the phone call, especially the official word-for-word transcript of the call that was produced — as is customary — by the White House Situation Room,” the complaint says.

Who is Joseph Maguire, the acting director of national intelligence?

Acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire Thursday publicly spoke for the first time about a whistleblower complaint involving President Trump.

House Democrats are testing the waters for a possible Trump impeachment and are hoping Maguire, in his appearance before the House Intelligence Committee, will be able to shed light on why the complaint was withheld from Congress for several weeks. There have been multiple media reports that Maguire threatened to resign over concerns that the White House might attempt to force him to stonewall Congress, but Maguire denied he had done so. In a statement, he said that “at no time have I considered resigning my position since assuming this role on Aug. 16, 2019. I have never quit anything in my life, and I am not going to start now.”

Following his morning testimony, Maguire will speak to the Senate intelligence panel behind closed doors.

Joseph Maguire and now current director of the National Counterterrorism Center, appears before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Capitol Hill in Washington. So who is Joseph Maguire?

Maguire is the acting director of national intelligence, the Cabinet-level official who leads the United States Intelligence Community. The position was created in 2005  by a 9/11 panel set up to examine intelligence failures after the attacks. Maguire, who had previously served as the Director of the National Counterterrorism Center, moved into the role earlier this year after Director Dan Coats resigned.

Maguire has only been in the position for fewer than two months.

Maguire is a retired naval officer and was previously a vice president at Booz Hamilton. He retired from the U.S. Navy after a 36-year career that included leading the Naval Special Warfare Command. Maguire also served as the president and CEO of the Special Operations Warrior Foundation.

Maguire attended Manhattan College for his bachelor’s degree, and earned his master’s degree in National Security Affairs from the Naval Postgraduate School in California, according to Maguire’s biography.

There was some controversy leading up to his appointment. President Trump had announced Maguire’s appointment via tweet following the resignation of Sue Gordon from the DNI. Conservatives had largely viewed Gordon as part of the intelligence community that clashed with Trump the most. Trump had initially tapped Rep. John Ratcliffe to lead the intelligence committee but the Texas lawmaker withdrew his name after stories emerged that he may have padded his resume.

Shaquille O’Neal admits he was ‘ring chasing’ when he joined Boston Celtics in 2010

Shaquille O’Neal on Wednesday admitted he was ring chasing when he joined the Boston Celtics before the start of the 2010-11 season after a stint with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Hall of Famer center appeared on FS1’s “Fair Game with Kristine Leahy” and explained he was looking for another championship ring after three with the Los Angeles Lakers and one with the Miami Heat. O’Neal admitted he retired a year too early after signing a two-year contract with Boston.

NETS NOT PLANNING FOR DURANT TO PLAY THIS SEASON

O’Neal said he was looking forward to a farewell tour in the final year of his contract, but when he suffered an injury in his first season with the Celtics, it threw everything off. He said he felt like he would be robbing fans and robbing the Celtics if he couldn’t play up to his expectations.

“In my mind I’m like I’m used to parades and banners and making people complain to the refs and making people say ‘Oh we playin’ against Shaq? I don’t want to play tonight.’ That’s what I want to be remembered as,” he said.

“And growing up in that military family, my father says you always gotta look a man or a woman in the face and be honest. And I felt like I was robbing them. I didn’t feel right. [Coach Doc Rivers] told me when I came in ‘We’re not going to need you to do much. Just rebound.’ And I accepted and said O.K.

BETO O’ROURKE PICKS LEBRON JAMES OVER MICHAEL JORDAN AS ‘GREATEST BASKETBALL PLAYER OF ALL TIME’

“I just wanted to try to …. I was ring chasing. I’m being honest. Yeah, I was ring chasing.”

O’Neal said he thinks if he wouldn’t have gotten hurt or if they would have kept Kendrick Perkins during the season, they would have won the championship.

“I was ring chasing, I really was,” O’Neal said. “But I wanted to help [Paul Pierce] because Paul was one of my favorite players and I love [Kevin Garnett].”

O’Neal played 37 games that season with Boston and started 36 of them. He averaged 9.2 points and 4.8 rebounds per game — the lowest numbers of his illustrious career.

Antonio Brown drawing interest from ‘a few teams’ despite multiple sexual assault allegations, agent says

Despite a rash retirement from the NFL, Antonio Brown is still drawing interest from several teams, agent Drew Rosenhaus said Wednesday.

Rosenhaus explained on Warren Sapp’s “99 Problems” podcast that Brown’s abrupt “retirement” from the league was premature and that he believes Brown still wants to play in the league.

ANTONIO BROWN ATTENDS DEPOSITION IN CONDO-TRASHING CASE; FOOTAGE SHOWS FURNITURE RAINING DOWN ON COMPLEX POOL

“I believe that Antonio wants to continue his career in the NFL and I’ve mentioned that. I have had discussions with a few teams that are very interested in him and want to know about his future and what’s going on with the NFL,” Rosenhaus said. “Hopefully, when that is all resolved, Antonio will be able to continue his Hall of Fame career. That’s really where our focus is.”

Brown was released by the New England Patriots after one game and just 11 days with the team. He was accused of sexual assault and rape in a civil lawsuit filed in Florida, and a separate sexual assault and allegation surfaced in a report in Sports Illustrated last week. Brown was released after that report.

ANTONIO BROWN BACK TO SCHOOL AT CENTRAL MICHIGAN AFTER PATRIOTS RELEASE

Meanwhile, Brown announced he was taking classes at Central Michigan University and appeared at a deposition hearing over a furniture-throwing case. Rosenhaus said he encourages all his clients to finish their degrees or receive a post-graduate degree and that Brown taking the classes doesn’t mean the wide receiver is finished with football completely.

“I know there’s been a lot of speculation as to whether or not that means he’s not going to proceed with the NFL but taking online college courses to get your degree or your post-graduate degree is something that I would recommend to every client. I wouldn’t read too much into that,” he said.

He added: “Obviously, it’s a very difficult time for him not playing. We expected him to be playing against the Jets on Sunday. So it’s tough. It’s tough for someone who loves the game not to be playing right now and the hope is that we will cooperate with the NFL and their investigation and get him back with a team to continue this tremendous career that he’s had.”

Rosenhaus didn’t specify how many teams have shown interest in Brown since his release. A source told Pro Football Talk that at least three teams had shown interest.

Demi Moore says Ashton Kutcher hosted a party with Jenna and Barbara Bush, did ‘bong hits’

Demi Moore claims in her new book that Jenna and Barbara Bush smoked out of a bong at her ex-husband Ashton Kutcher’s Beverly Hills mansion while their father was still the president.

In her book “Inside Out,” Moore, 56, recalls a time early in their relationship when she and her three daughters went to live with Kutcher, 41, while her own home was being renovated.

She notes that “it had been a straight-up L.A. party house” prior to their arrival.

She recounted a story in which the daughters of former President George W. Bush had come back to the home before she lived there and, “ended up doing bong hits at that house at one of Ashton’s parties.”

Reps for the Bush twins did not immediately respond to Fox News’ requests for comment.

Kutcher himself previously recounted the story in a 2003 interview with Rolling Stone. However, in his version, the girls allegedly used a hookah instead of a bong.

As Kutcher tells it, he was at a Nike party with some friends when he met the girls and invited them back to his place after.

And then I go upstairs to see another friend, and I can smell the green waiting out under his door. I open the door, and there he is smoking out the Bush twins on his hookah.”

Former college football player returns to US after serving 3 years in China prison over bar fight

Former college football player Wendell Brown returned to the U.S. on Wednesday, three years after he was sent to a Chinese prison for allegedly assaulting a man during a bar fight.

Brown, a Detroit native who played linebacker for Ball State University, was teaching English and coaching American football in China when he was arrested in September 2016 and charged with international assault. Brown denied hitting the man and witnesses said he was the one being harassed.

Upon his return home, Brown reflected on his freedom.

“We don’t really understand that word to its fullest extent until [we’re] without it,” Brown said. “Hallelujah! I’m free!”

Trump takes on the ‘Queen of Mean’: resurfaced video in new documentary

In the annals of New York’s real estate history, the Empire State Building and the real estate mogul and future president, Donald Trump hold a special place.

In Fox Nation’s new docu-series, “American Built,” Fox and Friends co-host Steve Doocy delved into the story of the one-time, world’s tallest skyscraper and he found the current occupant of the White House in the middle of it all.

HOW AN ICONIC AMERICAN LANDMARK NEARLY LOOKED VERY DIFFERENT THAN IT DOES TODAY

In 1991, after a downturn in the New York real estate, the owners of the Empire State Building sold the building and the land beneath it to a Japanese billionaire investor.

The new owners reportedly decided that in order to maximize their investment they would need to break an existing lease controlling the building, and they brought in an established New York real estate icon to help — that was Donald Trump.

The challenge for Trump was that the lease was held by a couple, with which he already had a difficult history, Harry and Leona Helmsley.

“In a deal packaged by Donald Trump but not involving his personal money, Trump and others have acquired for $42 million dollars the Empire State Building itself.  That’s where Leona and Harry Helmsley come in.  They control the building through a lease that runs to the year 2075, and according to them they plan no changes — especially now Leona’s arch-enemy, Donald owns the building,” reported a local New York City journalist at the time.

Leona Helmsley became known as a symbol of 1980s greed and earned the nickname “the Queen of Mean” after her 1988 indictment and subsequent conviction for tax evasion. One employee had quoted her as saying, “Only the little people pay taxes.”

In the newly-resurfaced video in “American Built: Empire State Building,” Trump went after the woman that he saw as standing in the way of his plans.

“I’m not a huge fan of Leona.  I haven’t been a huge fan of Leona, never will be a huge fan of Leona.  But right now at this moment, they have a lease and we’ll see about that lease,” said Trump in 1994, “I have a lease on the building and the land and we’re all going to make a determination as to what is happening.”

“Trump went to court to try to break the existing land-lease, but a judge ruled against him, and he wound up selling his share for $57.5 million” narrated Doocy.

The Fox Nation show re-examined the planning of the Empire State Building in the roaring 1920s and the building of what would become the tallest building in the world at the time in the 1930s, in the midst of the Great Depression.

After the September 11th terror attacks, the Empire State Building would briefly become the tallest building in New York City again, and it’s significance resonated with many at the time.

“The World Trade Center surpassed it as the tallest building in the world. And when that was gone you know the Empire State Building had lost that partner in the city skyline and in the history of New York City,” said Kate Lemos McHale of the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission.
