Des Moines Register reportedly faces threats, adds police presence after story backlash

Westlake Legal Group CarsonKing_190918_CA3_hpMain_4x3_992 Des Moines Register reportedly faces threats, adds police presence after story backlash Joseph Wulfsohn fox-news/us/us-regions/midwest/iowa fox-news/us/crime/police-and-law-enforcement fox-news/media fox news fnc/media fnc article 6edbb881-c2ba-536e-8fb6-ca992f7785a2

The Des Moines Register has reportedly been faced with serious threats and said it is taking extra precautions to secure its staff after a story published on Tuesday drew backlash on social media.

KWWL reported on Wednesday that the Des Moines Police Department will have the presence outside of the Register’s office “around the clock” and that they have hired an off-duty police officer to secure inside.

“We are certainly aware of some of the threats they`ve had. They made a report to the police department so that goes on our radar as a place we are going to want to give a little extra attention to,” Des Moines Police Sergeant Paul Parizek said to KWWL.

This comes after Iowa’s largest paper was slammed over a piece profiling 24-year-old Iowan native, Carson King, who became a TV sensation last weekend after he held up a sign at a football game asking people to donate money to him. He requested that they donate the funds through Venmo so he could buy his “supply” of Busch Light.

King went on to raise more than $1 million and donated the money to the University of Iowa’s Stead Children’s Hospital. Busch Light and Venmo pledged to match King’s fundraising efforts.

The newspaper report, however, included a “routine background check” of King’s social media history. Register reporter Aaron Calvin came across two racist jokes that dated back to 2012 when King was a 16-year-old high school student, “one comparing black mothers to gorillas and another making light of black people killed in the Holocaust.”

NYT REPORTERS BEHIND KAVANAUGH STORY SUGGEST KEY INFORMATION WAS REMOVED BY EDITORS

King was asked about the tweets and immediately expressed remorse.

“That’s not something that I’m proud of at all,” King told the Register on Tuesday.

He appeared on local TV stations to apologize and said, “I am embarrassed and stunned to reflect on what I thought was funny when I was 16 years old.”

In light of the tweets, Busch Light’s parent company, Anheuser-Busch InBev, announced that it was severing ties with King but promised to honor its pledge.

After the piece was published Tuesday evening, critics slammed the Register for digging up the tweets.

The Register’s Executive Editor Carol Hunter issued a statement responding to the backlash and shed some light on the internal discussion about whether to include details about King’s social media posts.

“Should that material be included in the profile at all? The jokes were highly inappropriate and were public posts. Shouldn’t that be acknowledged to all the people who had donated money to King’s cause or were planning to do so?” Hunter wrote.

Hunter went on to defend the paper’s decision to include such information, noting that it was toward the bottom of the profile and not placed prominently at the top.

Despite the uproar, King defended the paper and its reporter.

“The Des Moines Register has been nothing but kind in all of their coverage, and I appreciate the reporter pointing out the post to me,” King tweeted. “I want everyone to understand that this was my decision to publicly address the posts and apologize. I believe that is the right thing to do.”

In a statement to Fox News, King expressed that he didn’t want “any of this negativity to hinder with the amazing work everyone has done for the hospital.”

Surveillance video shows outnumbered homeowner fight off intruders with bare hands: report

Surveillance video released Wednesday captured the chilling moments a British homeowner fought off a group of masked intruders with his bare hands, pummeling the men until he chased them out of the home with kitchen knives.

Asif Ali, 35, told The Sun “instinct just kicked in” to defend his wife Charlotte, 30, who was upstairs at the time when a group of men gained access to his home in Rochdale around 9:15 p.m. Tuesday evening.

The businessman, who works in real estate and runs a clothing store for a living, said his dog began barking aggressively and he went to his doorway where he found a man standing inside his home dressed “head-to-toe in black.”

“He threw a punch at me and we started to fight,” Ali told The Sun. “A second man came in and I thought he was trying to get upstairs where my wife was. I didn’t want them anywhere near my wife.”

Ali said he had managed to drive the men outside when one of them pulled out a sharp metal weapon, which he thought to be a knife but police who viewed the video believe was a screwdriver. When one of the men threatened to kill him, the businessman ran back into the home and grabbed kitchen knives to further chase the intruders away.

Yankee pitcher Domingo Germán on leave through World Series amid domestic violence allegation

Major League Baseball and the players’ union Wednesday officially extended Yankee pitcher Domingo Germán’s administrative leave through the World Series amid a domestic violence allegation.

The 27-year-old was placed on leave for a week last Thursday under the league’s domestic violence policy.

Germán is being investigated by the league for an alleged incident involving his girlfriend at his home last week and the extension allows the investigation to continue.

The alleged incident was reported directly to the league and there is no police report, an MLB source reportedly told the New York Daily News.

After Germán’s initial suspension, the Yankees privately said they didn’t expect him to play in the playoffs, according to the Daily News.

Once the investigation is completed, Germán could be back next season.

He was 18-4 with a 4.03 ERA in 24 starts and three relief appearances over 143 innings this season.

Germán’ will be paid his $577,500 salary during the administrative leave, but it could later be turned into an unpaid suspension.

He has been a vital pitcher for the Yankees in a season in which many of their star players have seen time on the injury list.

Major League Soccer lifts ban on anti-fascist Iron Front flag at games after protests

Major League Soccer on Tuesday reportedly reversed a ban on fans waving the anti-fascist Iron Front flag at games through the rest of the season and the playoffs.

The decision came after some Portland Timbers and Seattle Sounders fans protested being barred from games with walkouts and silent demonstrations, The Washington Post reported.

MLS cited their ban on political statements at games, maintaining the flag falls under that category because it’s used by Antifa.

A fan waving a Trump flag was also removed from a game early in the season.

“As part of this decision to update the Fan Code of Conduct for 2020, MLS has suspended the prohibition on the Iron Front imagery at matches for the balance of the 2019 season and Audi MLS Cup Playoffs while the working group conducts its analysis,” MLS’ statement says in part.

Biden: Trump’s actions against me ‘impeachable,’ but my job is to ‘beat him’

Former Vice President Joe Biden said on Wednesday night that it’s “awful hard” to not view President Trump‘s actions with Ukraine as “impeachable” and that he will continue to focus on “beating him” in 2020.

Appearing on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” Biden began by rating the “outlandish news cycle” with an “18 out of 10” and calling the controversy surrounding Trump’s communications with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky “bizarre.”

“Rudy Giuliani is a great character witness the president has,” Biden joked.

Biden told ABC host Jimmy Kimmel that there’s “not one single, solitary, legitimate journalist in the world” that has given credibility to Trump’s accusations and expressed that he’s “worried about all the families that can’t take care of themselves.”

“Look, we want to get his attention. I have 70 polls in a row showing me beating him, and that all of sudden gets his attention,” Biden said. “And so I think that’s why I’m the object of his attention.”

The 2020 frontrunner offered a reaction to the newly-released transcript of Trump’s conversation with Zelensky, calling the president wanting the Department of Justice involved a “blatant abuse of power.”

“Do you think it is an impeachable- this particular instance, is an impeachable offense?” Kimmel asked.

“Based on the material that they acknowledged today, it seems to me that it’s awful hard to avoid the conclusion that it is an impeachable offense and a violation of constitutional responsibility,” Biden responded. “But look, I am confident in the ability of the House and Senate to deal with this. My job is to go out and flat-beat him.”

Laura Ingraham defended President Trump Wednesday against allegations by Democrats that he was shaking down Ukraine’s president to investigate Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son Hunter.

“There is not a single person in Washington with any experience in government, not one, who really believes the president was trying to use the Ukrainian government to rig the 2020 election,” Ingraham said on “The Ingraham Angle.” “I don’t see how anyone in his or her right mind could legitimately say there’s an impeachable offense in this transcript, in the conversation.”

UKRAINE TRANSCRIPT SHOWS TRUMP SOUGHT BIDEN PROBE, ASKED ABOUT DNC SERVER — BUT MADE NO MENTION OF US AID

The Trump Administration released a transcript of the president’s July phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky showing he sought a review of Biden family dealings in the country — but the document does not show Trump explicitly leveraging military aid as part of a quid pro quo.

Ingraham argued that Democrats “overplayed” the situation.

“I think it’s pretty obvious that the Democrats overplayed their hand big time,” Ingraham said. “They base their impeachment move on a whistleblower who didn’t even hear the conversation and who grossly exaggerated what happened in it.”

The host compared all Democrats to Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., saying there were no “moderates left in the Democrat Party.”

Ingraham also said Democrats were “possessed” with “anti-Trump rage.”

“They are infuriated that Mueller let them down, that Trump has beaten them pretty much at every turn. They’re obsessed with punishing him and anyone who works for him,” Ingraham said.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., argued on Wednesday night that Congress should pursue the impeachment of President Trump despite its unpopularity among voters and “put our country first” before their jobs.

“I personally do not believe in fulfilling my obligations to my job based on polling data,” Ocasio-Cortez said on CNN. “I think we need to do our job and we’ve been elected and sent here by the people of the United States of America to fulfill all of our obligations under the Constitution of the United States.”

The freshman congresswoman stressed that the polling on impeachment took place before what she described as a “really shattering allegation” that Trump attempted to leverage foreign aid to Ukraine in order to renew an investigation into former Vice President and 2020 frontrunner Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden. She also noted that the new revelations about Trump’s contacts with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has “united almost the entire Democratic caucus.”

“I think the ground has shifted. I don’t believe in making decisions based on polling,” Ocasio-Cortez continued. “I believe in our ability to organize the public, to educate the public, to talk to the public about why not just we as members of Congress much impeach the president but why all people in the United States of America must recognize and understand that need to put our country first before our consideration of reelection. And that goes for members of Congress all the way up to the president of the United States.”

Authorities in New York on Wednesday investigated the possible heist of $300,000 that was supposed to be shipped on a flight from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport to Florida, according to a report.

ARMED ROBBER TELLS JUDGE HE NEEDED MONEY FOR GED

Two law enforcement officials told WNBC that the missing $300,000 was supposed to arrive at the airport as part of a larger delivery from an armored car company. Officials said it is too early to determine if $300,000 in cash was removed from the shipment before it arrived at the airport or if that amount was taken out at the airport after the delivery was made.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police Department and the FBI are investigating the possible heist, a police spokeswoman told the station.

In 1978, masked men infamously raided a Lufthansa Airlines cargo building at JFK and made out with $5 million in cash and almost $1 million worth of jewelry in one of the greatest heists in American history, according to History.com.

The crime was later linked to the Lucchese crime family, who had help from someone on the inside—a cargo worker familiar with large cash shipments coming into the airport on domestic and international flights left vulnerable to robbery while they sat waiting to be delivered to banks. Police often help monitor and escort large cash shipments coming in and out of JFK, according to the station.

Sean Hannity blasted Democrats Wednesday for continuing to target President Trump over allegations involving a phone call with the president of Ukraine, calling their push for impeachment “B.S.”

“This is even a thousand and one times weaker than the Russia witch hunt,” Hannity said on his television show. “The Ukrainian witch hunt after days and days and days non-stop psychotic hysteria out [of] a phone call between President Trump the president of Ukraine.”

Hannity said that Trump continues to have people within the system working against him.

“The president of the United States can’t make a phone call to a foreign leader without getting spied on and stabbed in the back by unelected bureaucrats,” Hannity said. “People weaponizing the powerful tools of intelligence and turning it on the American people and their president.”
