Florida man loses 25 percent of skin to flesh-eating bacteria, wife says

A Florida man has undergone three operations, which removed about 25 percent of his skin, and is scheduled for one more after contracting a flesh-eating bacteria, his wife said.

David Ireland, 50, of Orlando, Fla. started having flu-like symptoms, including aches and fever, on August 16, his wife, Jody Ireland, told Fox News on Monday.

She said five days later, when the symptoms got worse and her husband complained of extreme pain in his groin and leg, she rushed him to the emergency room.

“It was unexpected,” she told Fox News. “He was fine one minute and sick the next.”

Since Ireland, a father of two girls ages seven and five, was admitted to the hospital, doctors have had to remove more than 25 percent of the skin from his body, and his kidneys failed, his wife said.

“I’m a mess. I’m trying to be strong for my kids. I miss him. I want my husband back,” she told Fox News, adding that her husband “is not responsive at all” and hasn’t been for the past five days.

Jody said that her husband was diagnosed with Necrotizing Fasciitis, a rare bacterial infection that spreads quickly in the body and can cause death, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Symptoms include fever, dizziness, or nausea soon after an injury or surgery.

The bacteria most commonly enters the body through a break in the skin, according to the CDC.

Jody told Fox News doctors told her that the bacteria entered her husband’s body through an open wound on his leg and “because he is diabetic, the bacteria turned into strep and started eating his flesh.”

She said her husband is scheduled for another surgery Tuesday.

She added that doctors told him, “his hands and feet might have to be amputated, if he even survives.”

Ireland is currently in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit at a Florida Hospital and is on continuous dialysis and a ventilator, according to Jody.

“I have two doctors who say they are optimistic and one doctor who is saying something different,” Jody told Fox News.

“I am trying to keep the hope alive.”

VMAs 2019: Missy Elliott delivers incredible performance, takes home Vanguard award

Missy Elliott brought her groundbreaking music videos to life when she performed a medley of her hits over the last two decades at the 2019 MTV Music Video Awards Monday evening.

Taking the stage at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., Elliott performed her hits including, “Pass That Dutch” and ”Lose Control.” She even sported the inflated trash bag she first rocked with confidence and charisma in the 1997 video for “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly).”

The 48-year-old also brought out Alyson Stoner — who was 10-years-old when she was first featured in Elliott’s 2003 video “Work It” — for the performance.

Guy Benson: Attacks on Elizabeth Warren for past Republican ties are ‘a lame hit’

Westlake Legal Group 694940094001_6077532797001_6077522674001-vs Guy Benson: Attacks on Elizabeth Warren for past Republican ties are 'a lame hit' Victor Garcia fox-news/shows/the-story fox-news/politics/elections/presidential fox-news/politics/elections/democrats fox-news/politics/elections/campaigning fox-news/politics/2020-presidential-election fox-news/person/elizabeth-warren fox-news/media/fox-news-flash fox-news/media fox news fnc/media fnc article 1944d964-481f-59da-aa5a-850f9a41630d

Will the Republican past of Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., hurt her campaign?

According to the host of Fox News Radio’s “Guy Benson Show,” Warren has cemented herself as a progressive and criticism over her past political affiliations likely won’t hurt her.

“I feel like that is a lame hit on her. I am not an Elizabeth Warren supporter or fan in almost any way but I’m not sure that’s going to work, saying, ‘oh well, she used to be, what, 30 plus years ago, a Republican,'” Guy Benson said Monday on “The Story with Martha MacCallum.”

Last week, actress Susan Sarandon apparently took a dig at Warren’s past Republican affiliations while introducing Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., at a campaign event.

“[Sanders] is not someone who used to be Republican,” Sarandon said. “He is not someone who used to take money, or still takes money, from Wall Street. He is the real deal.”

WARREN TAKES VEILED SHOT AT HILLARY OVER 2016 DEBATE PERFORMANCE AGAINST TRUMP

Warren was a Republican until 1996 when the senator was 47.

Benson said Warren didn’t need to worry about being perceived as a conservative Republican.

“I think most people on the left, most people in the Democratic Party, recognize that she is for better — and I think usually for worse — a hardcore, often abrasive progressive,” Benson said.

The radio host also weighed in on the latest Monmouth poll that had Warren and Sanders in the lead with 20 percent each, and the former frontrunner Joe Biden slipping to third with 19 percent.

As to why Biden dropped so much, Benson speculated that may be due to former vice president’s recent gaffes.

“Maybe the gaffes, maybe this seeming brain cloud and the fuzziness, that might be spooking some people,” Benson said.

Ben Shapiro: Millennials’ waning support of patriotism, religion hurt the ties that bind Americans together

A new poll showing millennials’ value of patriotism, religion and family is less than in previous generations is a disturbing development, according to Ben Shapiro.

Without a common belief in the goodness of America, no matter one’s ideology, it is hard to find what unites people beside relative superficialities like sporting events, Shapiro claimed Monday on “The Story.”

“The common social institutions and philosophies around which the country was formed and has continued to progress are dissolving,” he said.

“If you get rid of patriotism — an innate belief that the country and the principles upon which it was founded are wonderful — and you get rid of religion… and then you get rid of even a care of the future … the question becomes what exactly are the ties that are supposed to bind us together other than watching the Super Bowl once a year together?”

MILLENNIALS CARE LESS ABOUT PATRIOTISM, RELIGION AND FAMILY THAN PREVIOUS GENERATIONS, STUDY SAYS

The conservative author also explained how millennials are subscribing to the latter of two accounts of America’s founding.

More from Media

“One is that America was founded on eternally good, true and wonderful principles — we have not always lived up to those principles — but the story of America is an attempt to fulfill those great principles and is essentially a story of triumph over both the odds and our inner demons as well,” he said.

“Story No. 2 is that America was rooted fundamentally in evil, slavery, sexism, racism, bigotry homophobia and that all of our institutions are rife with these things, so why would you be patriotic about institutions that are so thoroughly corrupt?”

In addition, Shapiro said it is troubling that younger people are appearing to find self-fulfillment as a “top goal,” compared to fulfilling one’s human duty to other people and to God.

“Those two are in direct conflict,” he said.

Regarding the poll itself — conducted by Wall Street Journal/NBC News — the survey began 21 years ago when Americans were asked which values were most important to them and the majority responded that “principles of hard work, patriotism, commitment to religion and the goal of having children” were critical.

Patriotism being “very important” fell 9 percent, religion dropped 12 percent and having children fell a whopping 16 percent. Older participants still feel that patriotism is a priority, but younger people aren’t as enthusiastic.

“The values that Americans say define the national character are changing, as younger generations rate patriotism, religion and having children as less important to them than did young people two decades ago,” Wall Street Journal reporter Chad Day wrote about the results.

Stephen Moore: Recession talk just ‘wishful thinking’ by liberals hoping to oust Trump

President Trump’s senior economic adviser called out Democrats and TV host Bill Maher for rooting for the country to go into a recession in order to hurt the president’s reelection chances.

“It’s easy for Bill Maher to say that he’d love to see a recession. I mean he makes, what, $20-30 million or so. He could withstand that,” Stephen Moore said on “The Story with Martha MacCallum” on Monday, before adding that talks of a recession were just “wishful thinking” by liberals hoping to get rid of Trump.

Maher has repeatedly confessed to hoping for a recession, saying that the economic fallout would be “worth it” if it prevented Trump from securing a second term.

Moore told MacCallum about his experience discussing the economy recently in San Francisco, where some financial advisers were unhappy to hear his rosy outlook and instead supported Maher’s position.

BILL MAHER FINDS ALLY IN NBC NEWS’ RICHARD ENGEL IN ‘HOPING’ US ECONOMY SLIDES TO OUST TRUMP

“A woman asked me, ‘Do you think we’re going to have a recession?’ And I said, ‘Well, I’d never say no,’ but I said I think the economy’s pretty fundamentally strong and I don’t see one on the horizon,” Moore said.

“And the people kind of grimaced when I said that and one woman said, ‘I want a recession because that’ll help get rid of Donald Trump — and I think that’s most liberals.”

Moore said he supported the president’s trade war with China and categorized the recent economic situation as more of a “slowdown.”

“The good news is Americans have a lot of money in their pockets and they’re spending that right now. The consumer really is going and I just don’t see a recession. I do see a slowdown,” Moore said.

Republican 2020 challenger Joe Walsh: ‘I don’t know’ if I could vote for Dem to stop Trump

Former Rep. Joe Walsh would not commit when pressed on Monday as to whether he would be willing to vote for a Democrat in 2020 in order to defeat President Trump.

“If it doesn’t work out, will you vote for the Democrat?” MSNBC host Nicolle Wallace asked.

“I will never vote for Donald Trump again,” Walsh, who formally launched his presidential campaign last weekend, responded.

“Will you vote for the Democrat?” Wallace asked again.

“I don’t know, it’s the best honest answer I could give you,” Walsh said.

Wallace then told the ex-congressman she would vote for any of the 2020 Democrats or even “their automobile” to remove Trump from the White House and that it was the “only intellectually honest thing to do.”

JOE WALSH CLAIMS REPUBLICANS WILL BE ‘SPANKED’ IN 2020 IF TRUMP IS GOP NOMINEE

Walsh went on to suggest that he could be swayed into voting for the Democrat — but wasn’t there yet.

“Look, I’m a Tea Party conservative,” Walsh explained. “The Democrats’ ideas — many of them scare me.”

“But, if you believe it’s an emergency, it’s not about policy,” Wallace argued. “I mean, pay more in taxes if it means get rid of the crazy — that seems to me like the more intellectually honest place to go if you believe what you say.”

“I’m almost there — I am,” he responded, “because that’s a fight and that’s a better fight. I’d rather sit down at a table with Elizabeth Warren and talk about free college tuition. This guy is destroying the country. I agree with you. I could be brought there.”

Walsh was asked later if he could support Sen. Warren, D-Mass., or Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., if either of them became the nominee, but he doubled down.

“I’m almost there, I can’t support Trump. I know you want a better answer than that,” he said.

If a new poll showing former Vice President Joe Biden trailing his rivals is indicative of a new trend, his 2020 hopes are dashed, according to Chris Stirewalt.

The Monmouth University survey showing a virtual three-way tie between Biden and Sens. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., could be a bad omen for the Democrat, Stirewalt said Monday on “Special Report.”

“If that were the state of this race, Joe Biden will be out of the race before Halloween,” he said.

“He will not persist. If the reality for Joe Biden is that he is fighting for second place, then he is on his way out because his core argument is electability.”

BIDEN PLUNGES, TIED WITH WARREN AND SANDERS IN NEW NATIONAL POLL

In the Monmouth poll, Biden trailed Warren and Sanders by one percentage point — within the margin of error.

To that extent, Stirewalt said Biden cannot survive anywhere below first place.

“If he is not the front-runner, he’s the none-runner, and he will have to get out of the race because what Democrats desperately need is a viable alternative to Warren or Sanders,” he said. “They’ve got to have it and they’ve got to have it now.”

Responding to Stirewalt, Democratic strategist Leslie Marshall agreed with much of his sentiment.

“If that is not an outlier,” she said of the poll, “Joe Biden is not the nominee.”

Texas pastor whose daughter was killed in mass shooting is running for state Senate

A Texas pastor whose teenage daughter was among those killed during a mass shooting in his church in 2017 says he’ll run for the state Senate next year.

The pastor, Frank Pomeroy, on Monday announced his intention to run as a Republican against Judith Zaffirini, an incumbent Democrat.

Pomeroy served as the pastor of the First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs, where a gunman killed 26 people — his 14-year-old daughter, Annabelle, was among them — in November 2017.

“I have many reasons why not to do this. But I feel like out of duty and out of obedience to what the Lord has called me to do, and then, to use the talents that I just shared with you guys, the talents that God has given me to glorify him. I feel compelled,” Pomeroy told The Dallas Morning News.

TEXAS CHURCH SHOOTING VICTIMS’ FAMILIES SUE GUN RETAILER

Pomeroy’s announcement came with Texas reeling from a more recent mass shooting in El Paso; 22 people were killed by a gunman targeting Hispanics.

He told The Associated Press the shooting inside his church compelled him to launch a dialogue with people about guns and other political issues. He said he was angered by the reaction of some politicians, especially 2020 White House hopeful Beto O’Rourke, a Democrat, to the El Paso attack.

“Rather than putting their political ideologies aside for a while, they turn people into political pawns,” Pomeroy told the paper. “That wasn’t the time in my mind. …Those people need grace, they needed hands, they needed hugs.”

He added that “integrity and morality are degrading,” particularly among Democrats.

Pomeroy said that owning guns was not the problem that has led to mass shootings, and that the focus ought to be on issues relating to mental illness. The gunman in the church massacre was a discharged Air Force airman with a history of violence who later killed himself.

Pomeroy, 53, is running in a district that’s solidly Democrat. President Trump lost it by double digits in 2016.

Zaffirini took office in 1987 and has been the first Hispanic to serve in the state Senate. She’s passed 127 bills this year, according to the paper, more than any other legislator in a single session.

She’s had a near-perfect attendance record and hasn’t missed a vote in her 32 years in the Legislature. She missed her niece’s wedding in Mexico and her son’s graduation ceremony at the University of Texas at Austin to cast votes, according to the paper.

Voters “may disagree with me, but they appreciate that work ethic,” she told the paper, adding that she knew Pomeroy and his wife. “I always treat every challenger seriously and every challenger respectfully and that is how I hope to engage with him.”

Cardi B’s “Money” won the Best Hip-Hop award — the first televised award of the night.

“I can’t hear myself,” she said as fans chanted her name. “Let me do my speech now.” The 26-year-old rapper went on to thank Jora Frantzis, who directed her “Money” clip, as well as her glam team.

While presenting Best Latin Music Video, Allison Brie and French Montana put a spotlight on immigration activism: “I’m so proud to pronounce this award because as an immigrant I feel like we are the people that make his country, and I feel like I want to be a voice,” Montana said.

Added Brie: “What’s happening to immigrants in this country is unconstitutional and frankly disgusting.”

Other performers who took the stage included: Shawn Mendes, the Jonas Brothers, Lizzo and Lil Nas X.
