Mexico’s National Human Rights Commission is calling for protective measures and government action for more than 8,800 migrants moving in various groups through the south of the country.

In a statement Monday, the commission tallied five groups of migrants from various countries spread across several towns in the southern state of Chiapas. Some have been stuck in the area for several weeks while the most recent arrivals just crossed from Guatemala.

The commission says many of the migrants are not being given information about their applications for humanitarian visas or transit permits and lack adequate medical care.

Some 3,200 of the migrants are in the town of Mapastepec and have been told by authorities they may have to wait up to six months to have their paperwork to continue.

As President Donald Trump’s proposal to send illegal immigrants to sanctuary cities increasingly faces backlash from Democrats, Sen. Bernie Sanders admits there’s a “serious problem” at the border.

“The problem right now is that we are now seeing desperate people fleeing violence and misery in Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala. With little children walking 1,000 miles,” the 2020 presidential hopeful explained during Fox News’ town hall Monday night, claiming they’re not “trying to sneak in” but rather simply seeking asylum in the U.S.

In order to accommodate an “overflowing” immigration system, Sanders said we need “sensible immigration reform.” According to the Vermont senator, that includes recruiting hundreds of judges to help deal with these issues.

BERNIE SANDERS BLASTS CRITICS CLAIMING HE’S ‘TOO OLD’ TO RUN: ‘FOLLOW ME AROUND THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL’

“You need to have many, many more judges to expedite the process,” said Sanders, adding that he would look into tweaking asylum laws though he didn’t elaborate.

“We don’t need to demonize immigrants,” Sanders added, as the audience clapped in support.

An influx of asylum requests from immigrants facing deportation has overwhelmed U.S. courts in recent months and denial of the requests does little to keep illegal immigrants out, according to federal statistics.

Migrants are entitled under both U.S. and international law to apply for asylum. But there already is a bottleneck of would-be asylum seekers waiting at some U.S. border crossings to make their claims, some waiting as long as five weeks. For others, the process could even take years.

BERNIE SANDERS CALLS ON TRUMP TO RELEASE TAX RETURNS DURING FOX NEWS TOWN HALL

“The reality is that most people in the caravan will not be found qualified for asylum, and many of them know it. Others are encouraged to, but likely their claims will not pass muster, especially under new guidance from Jeff Sessions, to get back to a stricter adherence to the law,” Jessica Vaughan, director of policy studies for the Center for Immigration Studies — a Washington, D.C.- based research institution, previously told Fox News.

As U.S. officials work on assisting migrants, Sanders suggested building proper facilities on the border for them to stay in for the time being.

“What we need is comprehensive immigration reform,” Sanders said.

“We need to provide legal status to those people … We need the proper legal process at the border so that these issues can be adjudicated to determine whether or not people should be entitled to asylum,” he continued, adding that we need border security.

However, Sanders said he believes there are more “cost effective” ways to do that than building a wall, as Trump has proposed.

Sen. Bernie Sanders has six words for voters who doubt he’s sprightly enough to run for president a second time: “Follow me around the campaign trail.”

The 77-year-old Vermont senator is one of the oldest candidates to enter the 2020 race, but to Sanders, age is just a number.

“It is a fair question. It is a fair question,” Sanders said during Monday night’s Fox News town hall after Martha MacCallum asked what he would tell constituents who say he’s “too old” to be president.

The audience applauded as Sanders stood up from his stool.

“If there was wood here, I’d knock on it,” joked Sanders. “Thank God my health is good.”

Sanders then pointed to his track record — literally — noting that he was a long distance runner as a kid and one of the “better milers” in New York City, where he grew up.

BERNIE SANDERS FAST FACTS: 5 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE VERMONT SENATOR

“I’ve continued to have my endurance,” he said.

But Sanders said his experience in government is really all that matters.

Sanders has served as Vermont’s senator since 2007. Before that, he spent 16 years as a lawmaker in the U.S. House of Representatives. His combined years of service in the government makes him the longest-serving Independent member of Congress ever, according to his official bio.

His political career started in 1981 when he was elected mayor of Burlington by just 10 votes.

“I’ve been all over the world talking to heads of state. It’s a combination of factors. But at the end of the day, it’s not whether you’re young or whether you’re old — it’s what you believe in,” argued Sanders.

“There’s too much focus on individuals and not enough focus on Americans and what their needs are,” he added.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the archbishop of New York, cited biblical text to help make sense of the catastrophic fire that engulfed the upper reaches of Paris’ soaring Notre Dame Cathedral as it was undergoing renovations Monday.

“It affects all the senses,” he said. “I can see us rising from this dying.”

He added: “This fire won’t have the last word.”

SHOCKING PHOTOS: NOTRE DAME CATHEDRAL CATCHES FIRE

The fire had been threatening one of the greatest architectural treasures of the Western world as tourists and Parisians looked on aghast from the streets below. Paris fire chief Jean-Claude Gallet said the church’s structure remained intact.

The blaze collapsed the cathedral’s spire and spread to one of its landmark rectangular towers. A spokesman said the entire wooden frame of the cathedral would likely come down, and that the vault of the edifice could be threatened too.

Dolan offered hope amid the disaster continually at his New York City news conference: “This Holy Week teaches us that, like Jesus, death brings life. Today’s dying, we trust, will bring rising.”

Dolan said the fire struck at the heart of civilization, a spiritual home that has endured moments of smiles and tears.

Earlier in the afternoon, Dolan tweeted: “I just went next door to our own beloved Cathedral, Saint Patrick’s, to ask the intercession of Notre Dame, our Lady, for the Cathedral at the heart of Paris, and of civilization, now in flames! God preserve this splendid house of prayer, and protect those battling the blaze.”

Built in the 12th and 13th centuries, Notre Dame is the most famous of the Gothic cathedrals of the Middle Ages as well as one of the most beloved structures in the world. Situated on the Ile de la Cite, an island in the Seine River, the cathedral’s architecture is famous for, among other things, its many gargoyles and its iconic flying buttresses.

Among the most celebrated works of art inside: its three stained-glass rose windows, placed high up on the west, north and south faces of the cathedral. Its priceless treasures also include a Catholic relic, the crown of thorns, which is only occasionally displayed, including on Fridays during Lent.

“It was with horror that I saw the pictures of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris ablaze.  Having visited that magnificent gothic Church and prayed in it many times, I join all of those in France and elsewhere who receive this news with such pain,” Cardinal Donald Wuerl of the Archdiocese of Washington said in a statement to Fox News.

“In a special way, we offer our prayers and express our solidarity with all the people of France and particularly the faithful of the Church of Paris of which Notre Dame is the Cathedral.”

The campaign of self-described Democratic socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., released 10 years of his tax returns Monday. It showed, among other things, that the adjusted gross income of Sanders, who has been outspoken about economic inequality, was $561,293 in 2018, his campaign said in a statement.

Sanders, a 2020 presidential candidate, said: “These tax returns show that our family has been fortunate. I am very grateful for that, as I grew up in a family that lived paycheck to paycheck and I know the stress of economic insecurity.”

During his 2016 presidential campaign and beyond, Sanders declared that wealth inequality is “the great moral issue of our time.”

Now that he’s running for president again, the 77-year-old continues to advocate for the poor and middle class, including appealing for a $15-an-hour minimum wage and tuition-free colleges and universities.

Back in 2016, Sanders reportedly was the 19th-poorest U.S. senator. However, he has since published four books, and that’s said to have helped make him a millionaire.

“I wrote a best-selling book,” Sanders. “If you write a best-selling book, you can be a millionaire, too.”

According to estimates, Sanders’ net worth is roughly $2 million, based on his book sales, royalties and speaking engagements.

During a Fox News town hall Monday, Sen. Bernie Sanders urged President Donald Trump to release his tax returns — the same day the Vermont senator released 10 years worth of his tax information.

The 77-year-old’s tax documents confirmed Sanders is a millionaire, specifically showing his adjusted gross income in 2018 was $561,293 and that he paid a 26 percent effective tax rate.

“That’s a lot of money … it came from a book that I wrote. [It’s] a pretty good book, you might want to read it,” said Sanders during the opening of the town hall, adding that he wasn’t going to apologize for having a best-seller.

Fox News anchor Bret Baier noted that Sanders benefited from Trump’s tax bill, while Sanders pointed out that he voted against it.

“In my view … wealthy people and large corporations that are making billions in profits should start paying their fair share of taxes,” the 2020 presidential hopeful added.

Baier asked Sanders why he doesn’t take the tax breaks that Trump’s policy offers; the Vermont senator explained that he just pays the standard amount.

Sander then demanded that the correspondents call on Trump to release his tax returns.

Shock, prayers around the world for Notre Dame Cathedral

The world reacted with shock, horror and prayers to the massive fire Monday at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, united in grief and in solidarity with the people of France.

As the flames tore through the 12th-century cathedral, Spain’s prime minister offered France the help of his country in the recovery.

The fire is a “catastrophe for France, for Spain and for Europe,” Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez tweeted, adding that the flames are destroying “850 years of history, architecture, painting and sculpture.”

French President Emmanuel Macron told reporters near the scene that he will seek international help, including the “greatest talents” in the world, to rebuild Notre Dame.

U.S. President Donald Trump, speaking at the start of an appearance in Minnesota, spoke of the “terrible, terrible fire” that devastated “one of the great treasures of the world.”

“It’s a part of our growing up, it’s a part of our culture, it’s a part of our lives,” Trump said of the landmark.

The Notre Dame Cathedral, situated on an island in the Seine River in the heart of Paris, is one of the world’s most visited tourist destinations, drawing some 13 million people each year. The fire’s emotional impact was widely felt. People from all over described in Facebook posts how they cried when they heard about the fire.

Former U.S. President Barack Obama posted an old photo of himself, his wife and their two daughters lighting candles in the cathedral.

“Notre Dame is one of the world’s great treasures, and we’re thinking of the people of France in your time of grief,” Obama said on Twitter.

The Vatican said Pope Francis “has seen with shock and sadness the news of the terrible fire that has devastated the Cathedral of Notre Dame, symbol of Christianity in France and in the world.”

Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the archbishop of New York, prayed at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan for intercession.

“God preserve this splendid house of prayer, and protect those battling the blaze,” Dolan said in a statement.

Jeff Ament, bass player for Pearl Jam, remembered spending hours at the cathedral in his first visit, in 1991, with record executive Michael Goldstone.

“Thinking about Paris,” Ament tweeted, with photos of the cathedral.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres tweeted that he’s “horrified,” calling the cathedral “a unique example of world heritage.”

In Russia, the Russian Orthodox Church’s secretary for inter-Christian relations Hieromonk Stefan called the fire “a tragedy for the entire Christian world and for all who appreciate the cultural significance of this temple,” the state news agency RIA-Novosti reported:

On Twitter, Trump suggested using planes to drop water on the flames. France’s Civil Security agency said that wasn’t feasible.

“All means are being used, except for water-bombing aircrafts which, if used, could lead to the collapse of the entire structure of the cathedral,” the agency tweeted.

Bernie Sanders takes stage at Fox News town hall after emerging as apparent Dem frontrunner

Bernie Sanders took the stage at the Fox News town hall in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania on Monday, as the apparent fundraising front-runner among Democrats seeking the White House sought to further distinguish himself from a crowded field of liberal candidates who have largely embraced his progressive proposals, from a sweeping “Medicare for All” overhaul to a higher minimum wage and free public college education.

Fox News’ Bret Baier, of “Special Report,” and Martha MacCallum, of “The Story,” are co-anchors of the hour-long event.

The 77-year-old self-proclaimed ‘democratic socialist’ — the longest-serving Independent member of Congress in history — was expected to focus on the economy and his plans for U.S. job growth. Just minutes before the town hall began, Sanders released ten years of his tax returns, which he acknowledged showed that he had been “fortunate” even as he pushed for a more “progressive” tax system.

Sanders became a millionaire in recent years. Over the weekend, he sparred with progressive activist groups that pointed out he has since largely dropped his criticisms of “millionaires and billionaires,” opting instead to single out “billionaires” only.

Earlier Monday afternoon, Sanders previewed some of his messaging by asserting that President Trump’s “tax policies” will “raise taxes on millions of people.”

In an article entitled “Face it: You (Probably) Got a Tax Cut,” the New York Times credited liberal messaging with confusing large swaths of the electorate into thinking that their taxes went up, when in fact most saw significant tax savings under Trump’s 2017 tax law.

The town hall marked the Vermont senator’s first appearance on Fox News Channel since he agreed to be a guest on Baier’s show in December 2018. He also participated in a Fox News Channel town hall back in 2016 alongside his then-competitor Hillary Clinton.

HOW BERNIE WENT FROM SOCIALIST GADFLY TO FRONTRUNNER

Democratic National Committee (DNC) chair Tom Perez has excluded Fox News from hosting a Democrat primary debate. Some congressional Democrats have called that decision inappropriate and unhelpful, and DNC leadership later said it had no objection to Sanders appearing at a Fox News town hall.

Defending his appearance at the town hall, Sanders told Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” that it was “important to talk to Trump supporters and explain to them to what degree he has betrayed the working class of this country and lied during his campaign.”

Since announcing his presidential bid in February, Sanders has hauled in a whopping $18.2 million in the first 41 days of his campaign. But, although Sanders had a fundraising edge over his rivals, Democrats generally haven’t raised as much cash as they’d hoped by this point. Many donors have been sitting on the sidelines to see how the contest unfolds, signaling a drawn-out primary battle ahead.

The campaign among Democrats has come into greater focus as declared White House hopefuls reported their first-quarter fundraising totals. Early glimpses provided by nine of the declared candidates showed that Democrats were raising less money than they had in previous cycles and were coming up short against the campaign bank account Trump has been building.

Democrats collectively raised about $68 million since January, according to the candidates who have already released their fundraising totals. That’s less than the $81 million Democrats raised during the same period in 2007, the last time the party had an open primary, according to data from the Federal Election Commission. And, it paled in comparison with the $30 million Trump raised during the first quarter.

“There is no question that the numbers are not at the level that they were with Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton in 2008 by a long shot,” said Tom Nides, a Clinton adviser and longtime fundraiser. “Am I worried? No, I’m not worried. But I’m a little bit concerned.”

Investigators are treating the fire that engulfed Paris’ Notre Dame Cathedral as an accident for now, the local prosecutor’s office said Monday evening.

Paris police will investigate the disaster as “involuntary destruction caused by fire” and have ruled out arson and potential terror-related motives for starting the blaze, officials said.

The prosecutors’ statement came moments after a government official and the Paris fire chief said they were optimistic that the cathedral’s world-famous bell towers had been saved from the fire, and that the main structure of the building remained intact. It was a rare piece of good news on a night that left thousands in the streets of the French capital and millions around the world looking on in shock as one of the world’s great religious, cultural and historic landmarks was consumed by flames.

Fire chief Jean-Claude Gallet confirmed that firefighters had managed to stop the fire spreading to the northern belfry, the stomping ground of the fictional hunchback Quasimodo in Victor Hugo’s 1831 novel “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.” He added that two-thirds of the cathedral’s roof “has been ravaged” and confirmed that one firefighter was injured, the only known injury from the fire.

Late Monday, signs pointed to the fire nearing an end as lights could be seen through the windows moving around the front of the cathedral, apparently investigators inspecting the scene. Gallet said firefighters would keep working overnight to cool down the building.

CENTRAL SPIRE, ROOF OF HISTORIC CATHEDRAL COLLAPSE IN MASSIVE BLAZE

The blaze collapsed the cathedral’s spire, which had been shrouded in scaffolding as part of a 6 million-euro ($6.8 million) renovation project on the spire and its 250 tons of lead. French media quoted the Paris fire brigade as saying the fire was “potentially linked” to that construction.

The fire came less than a week before Easter amid Holy Week commemorations. As the cathedral burned, Parisians gathered to pray and sing hymns outside the church of Saint Julien Les Pauvres across the river from Notre Dame while the flames lit the sky behind them.

French President Emmanuel Macron, who canceled a planned address to the nation about the ongoing “yellow vest” crisis, rushed to the scene and straight into meetings at the Paris police headquarters nearby. After emerging to face a throng of reporters, Marcon vowed the cathedral would be rebuilt and announced the launch of an international fundraising drive to begin raising the millions of dollars necessary to restore the building to its former glory.

“We will rebuild this cathedral,” said Macron, who added that “The worst has been avoided although the battle is not yet totally won.” The French leader also praised the “courage” and “great professionalism” of firefighters who battled the blaze for approximately four hours.

Paris Archbishop Michel Aupetit invited priests across France to ring church bells in a call for prayers for the beloved Paris cathedral.

Built in the 12th and 13th centuries, Notre Dame is the most famous of the Gothic cathedrals of the Middle Ages as well as one of the most beloved structures in the world. Situated on the Ile de la Cite, an island in the Seine river, its architecture is famous for, among other things, its many gargoyles and its iconic flying buttresses.

Among its most celebrated art: three stained-glass rose windows, placed high up on the west, north and south faces of the cathedral. Its priceless treasures also include a Catholic relic, the crown of thorns, which is only occasionally displayed, including on Fridays during Lent. Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo said late Monday that the collection of artwork and holy objects kept inside the church had been recovered, though it was not clear if any items were damaged.

French historian Camille Pascal told the BFM broadcast channel the fire marked “the destruction of invaluable heritage.”

“It’s been 800 years that the Cathedral watches over Paris”, Pascal said. “Happy and unfortunate events for centuries have been marked by the bells of Notre Dame.”

He added: “We can be only horrified by what we see.”

An American eyewitness broke down in tears, saying she was “heartbroken” as the famed Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris burned Monday.

“When I looked down the street, I saw the sky was filled with multi-colored plumes of smoke and as an artist, all I could imagine was that the colors and the smoke were so vibrant it had to be from… pigments in the paintings inside and I was heartbroken to my core,” Liz Boeder, an American artist living in Paris, told “Shepard Smith Reporting.”

The structure’s main spire collapsed and a church spokesman told French media that all of Notre Dame Cathedral’s frame was burning.

The peak of the church, one of the world’s most famous tourist attractions, is undergoing a $6.8 million renovation project. It’s unclear if the fire is related to the construction, although the fire brigade has confirmed that was a possibility.

“When the spire fell… I felt as though a part of my, all my insides just fell apart,” Boeder said.

Boeder also talked about the cathedral’s beauty and what it represented to humanity.

“It was just a place where people went to go try to find meaning in their lives, to try to have the spiritual connection to that which is, you know, the highest aspirations of humanity,” Boeder told Smith as she became increasingly emotional.

“It was just a place of beauty. That’s all it was. It wasn’t a political place. It wasn’t, you know. It didn’t deserve that.”
