Mastermind behind shooting which left David Ortiz wounded arrested, officials say

Authorities in the Dominican Republic arrested the alleged mastermind behind the shooting which left Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz wounded earlier this month in an apparent case of mistaken identity.

Victor Hugo Gomez was detained in the Dominican Republic, police said Friday. No other details were released. Authorities said last week they believed Gomez was living in the U.S.

PLOT THAT WOUNDED ORTIZ UNRAVELED BECAUSE OF MANY MISTAKES

Gomez is a resident of Katy, Texas, and an alleged associate of Mexico’s Gulf Cartel, which is a drug trafficking organization, according to KTRK-TV. Officials said Gomez hired hitmen to take out his cousin whom Gomez suspected of turning him into Dominican drug investigators in 2011, according to the station.

Authorities said the hitmen confused Ortiz with the cousin – Sixto David Fernandez – during the June 9 shooting at a bar in Santo Domingo. Ortiz and Fernandez were sharing a table at the time.

Ortiz was shot and immediately taken to a hospital in the Dominican Republic before being flown to Boston for further treatment. Doctors had to remove Ortiz’s gallbladder and part of his intestine.

Ortiz was since removed from intensive care and was listed in good condition, his wife Tiffany Ortiz said in a statement over the weekend.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC OFFICIALS BELIEVE THEY HAVE IDENTIFIED MAN WHO PAID DAVID ORTIZ HITMEN

The investigation into the shooting has led to 12 arrests.

Gillette recalls Venus disposable razors over high laceration risk

Gillette on Thursday announced a recall of some of its disposable Venus razors over a higher-than-normal laceration risk.

MEDICAL COMPANY RECALLS ENDOTRACHEAL TUBES FOLLOWING REPORTS OF 4 PATIENT DEATHS

The company said a manufacturing error caused the blades in its Venus Simply3 disposable razors to be misaligned, thus “posing a higher risk of cuts during normal use,” according to an announcement from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

In total, 87,000 packages of the razors are subject to the recall.

The products were sold nationwide between January and May of this year. At least one person has been cut while using the now-recalled razor.

“Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled Venus Simply3 razors and contact Gillette to receive a postage-paid return label to return the razors and receive a voucher for a replacement,” the company advised.

Are you a Derby person or a Belmont person?

On the roster: Are you a Derby person or a Belmont person? – Border aid bill passes, heads to the president’s desk – Trump heading into key meeting with Chinese ruler – Audible: Friends helping friends? – Jim Gaffigan, call your office

ARE YOU A DERBY PERSON OR A BELMONT PERSON?
Something like 16 million people watched the Kentucky Derby this year. Ladies put on hats and folks stood in tents in their neighbors’ back yards and drank too-sweet mint juleps and made $5 bets based on favorite colors, names and numbers.

It was a hoot.

But a month later, fewer than 5 million people watched television coverage of the Belmont Stakes, the final Triple Crown race of the year. Unless you’re a horse person or happen to live near Elmont on New York’s Long Island, you probably didn’t even know it was happening.

We mention this just now because it might be helpful for political junkies looking for some perspective about the effects of the first two Democratic presidential debates, which were held this week in Miami.

If you’re deeply enough interested in politics to subscribe to this note, you are well aware that the debates took place. You probably have some thoughts about who won and who lost. You may have even watched with phone or iPad in hand, following the social media storms blowing about on Twitter or Facebook.

You, like us, are Belmont people living in a Kentucky Derby world.

Now, your opinions matter a good deal more than average voters simply because you are also probably influencers. You’re like the guy at the Derby party whose neighbors treat as a horse tout. You know poll standings and fundraising numbers like they know who runs better on mud and who won at Remington.

We think this bears mentioning because, understandably, the hype has gotten ahead of the horses.

There’s no question that Sen. Kamala Harris had the best overall performance in the debates. After a strong start, she had underwhelmed in interviews and town halls for several months. But she scored big with her set piece against frontrunner Joe Biden for his 1970’s opposition to mandatory busing – when black students were sent beyond their neighborhoods to white school districts in an attempt to promote diversity and diminish inequality.

It was a big moment, but after the debate, an interviewer actually asked Harris, in effect, if Biden’s presidential aspiration had been ended by the exchange. As the Democratic contenders might say, ay caramba.

There are at least nine more debates to go and 31 weeks until the Iowa Caucuses. While it’s true that Harris strongly solidified her status as a contender and Biden reinforced doubts about his fitness, these debates were not the end of anything. We’re not even at the end of the beginning yet.

The most consequential results of the debate will be for those hanging on to the bottom rungs and poor old Beto O’Rourke

The former Texas congressman was largely a creation of Belmont people and his performance – like a college kid who smoked too much pot before going to the grocery store and found himself in an argument with the butcher over the meaning of “organic” – will hurt him badly.

For others living in the political plankton – Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand and Amy Klobuchar, Reps. Tim Ryan and Eric Swalwell and a few others – it will be increasingly hard to keep up the pretense of a full campaign. The “anybody could win” riff gets harder to sell to donors and staffers after their performances.

Others in the teeming ocean of third-tier contenders, like former HUD Secretary Julian Castro, Sen. Cory Booker and Andrew Yang, probably got an extension from their good performances. And Marianne Williamson, who, like Pat Benatar, knows love is a battlefield, may get to be the mystical mascot for the field.

For the contenders other than Biden and Harris, nobody did anything likely to much change their trajectories. Both Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren were unremarkable and Pete Buttigieg couldn’t quite meet the sky-high expectations he faced.

But these are observations that really only matter to us Belmont people. While they may prove prescient, they are not of interest to Derby folks who just came for the juleps.

THE RULEBOOK: SETTING BOUNDARIES

TIME OUT: TWINKLE, TWINKLE LITTLE ASTEROID
The Sun: “NASA is eyeing up a nearby asteroid that contains enough gold to make everyone on Earth a billionaire. Psyche 16 is nestled between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter and is made of solid metal. As well as gold, the mysterious object is loaded with heaps of platinum, iron and nickel. In total, it’s estimated that Psyche’s various metals are worth a gargantuan $10,000 quadrillion. That means if we carried it back to Earth, it would destroy commodity prices and cause the world’s economy – worth $75.5 trillion – to collapse. We’ve known about Psyche 16 for a while, but its potential to cause havoc on Earth was recently touched upon by a veteran miner. Scott Moore, who heads up EuroSun Mining, said the sheer amount of gold in the asteroid threatens to throw the gold industry into chaos. … NASA is launching a mission to probe the asteroid in summer 2022. Dubbed the Discovery Mission, it will arrive at Psyche 16 around 2026.”

BORDER AID BILL HEADS TO THE PRESIDENT’S DESK
Reuters: “Democratic leaders in the U.S. House of Representatives backed down to President Donald Trump and passed a $4.6 billion aid package to address a migrant surge at the U.S.-Mexico border without the additional protections for migrant children that liberals had sought. Trump, the Republican-controlled Senate and moderate Democrats insisted on finishing the emergency aid bill as soon as possible, without further haggling over demands for greater migrant safeguards and reduced immigration enforcement spending. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the top Democrat in Congress, said shortly before the vote that her colleagues were giving up their fight for now over changes to the measure, which had already passed the Senate. ‘At the end of the day, we have to make sure that the resources needed to protect the children are available,’ she said in a statement. … The House vote was 305 to 102, with 71 out of 235 House Democrats voting against the Senate bill.”

Liberals fuming – Politico: “Democrats broke into open warfare Thursday over Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s surrender to the Senate’s emergency border aid package, with the caucus’ long-simmering divide between progressives and centrists playing out in dramatic fashion on the House floor. Some lawmakers even resorted to public name-calling, with progressive leader Rep. Mark Pocan (D-Wis.) accusing moderate Democrats of favoring child abuse — an exchange on Twitter that prompted two freshmen centrists to confront him directly on the floor, with other lawmakers looking on in shock. … The battle further illustrates the hurdles Pelosi faces in the fall as she tries to keep her caucus united while negotiating with Republicans to avoid a fiscal cliff and debt default.”

SupCo to hear DACA termination arguments – Politico: “The Supreme Court will hear arguments over the termination of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, the court said Friday. The announcement sets up a legal showdown later this year over President Donald Trump’s decision to remove protections that allow 669,000 Dreamers — who were illegally brought to the U.S. or overstayed a visa as children — to live and work in the United States legally. The high court could assign the case for argument as soon as October. The news comes as Trump and congressional Democrats continue to feud over his aggressive immigration crackdown and a growing influx of migrant families and children at the Southwest border.”

TRUMP HEADING INTO KEY MEETING WITH CHINESE RULER
NYT: “President Trump voiced optimism on Friday afternoon about upcoming trade talks with China, saying that his planned meeting on Saturday morning with China’s top leader, Xi Jinping, would be productive. Taking questions during a joint news conference with President Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil, Mr. Trump talked repeatedly about the Xi meeting, while avoiding specific predictions. ‘At a minimum, it will be productive — we’ll see what happens and what comes out of it,’ Mr. Trump said. He denied recent news reports that he had promised not to impose any new tariffs on China in order to arrange his meeting with Mr. Xi on Saturday. ‘No, I didn’t promise,’ he said. Mr. Trump’s senior aides have just gone through the necessary legal steps for him to impose tariffs of up to 25 percent on $300 billion a year worth of American imports from China. But they have not given any timetable for when he might actually do so.”

Trump yuks it up Putin – USA Today: “Three years after Russian efforts to influence the 2016 election triggered federal investigations, President Donald Trump asked Vladimir Putin on Friday not to do it again in 2020 – though he did so quickly and playfully. ‘Don’t meddle in the election, president,’ Trump said in a joking manner to Putin as cameras clicked and reporters shouted questions. Wagging a finger at the Russian president, Trump repeated, ‘don’t meddle in the election.’ When an interpreter translated Trump’s ‘request,’ Putin laughed. Later, a White House readout of the meeting said Trump and Putin discussed arms control, Iran, Syria, Venezuela and Ukraine – but said nothing about election interference. Trump’s light-hearted manner did not go down well with critics who accused him off laughing off a legitimate threat from an autocrat who has a grudge against the United States.”

Men beat, shave heads of mother-daughter duo who resists sexual assault as punishment

Police arrested two men in the sexual assault of an Indian mother and her daughter whose heads they shaved after they resisted rape Wednesday in northeastern Bihar, India.

A large group of men and a local official — who has not been identified— broke into their home, intending to molest the woman’s 22-year-old daughter on Wednesday, according to police.

THOUSANDS PROTEST RAPE OF 3-YEAR-OLD IN INDIAN KASHMIR

“I was alone with my mother around 6:30 in the evening when five men from the neighborhood forcefully entered the house and tried to molest me,” the daughter told NDTV. “When my mother and I protested, they started beating us with a stick and took us outside of the house.”

The women were then dragged into the streets and beaten by the men following the initial attack.

“We have been beaten very badly,”  the 50-year-old mother told the station. “I have injuries all over my body, and my daughter too has some injuries.”

The men, outraged by their failed attempt, then called a local barber who shaved the women’s heads as a punishment in front of the entire Bhagwanpur village after the mother-daughter duo tried to fight the men off.

GANG RAPE ON BUS TRIGGERS OUTRAGE, PROTESTS ACROSS INDIA

The daughter claims the local official has harassed her for the past several months in addition to this mob-style attack.

Police say they are actively searching for the five other men involved in this attack.

The woman and her daughter’s attack came just months after a teenage girl was attacked with acid in April after trying to escape gang rape. Several months before, an Indian woman was set on fire by two men who had molested her just days before her death in December.

India’s record-high volumes of sexual violence incidents, and after the gang rape of a 23-year-old on a New Delhi bus in 2012, prompted law reform and triggered global outrage.

Thomas McDaniels: In #MeToo era, it’s time for women to become preachers

It’s interesting to see the impact the #MeToo movement has made on our culture.

The past month has revealed yet another major issue regarding women — the oppression of women in the faith communities is now center stage.

This topic went viral when Bible teacher Beth Moore, a popular Southern Baptist speaker, mentioned in a tweet that she would be preaching a Mother’s Day service at a particular church.

The tweet created a frenzy across social media networks. Several male ministers from a variety of denominations began to weigh in on whether a woman should teach in a Sunday morning service.

Ten days later, the controversy escalated to debate on the floor of the Southern Baptist Convention.

On the first two days of the convention, a headline surfaced on the issue of whether women should have the right to preach and teach in a Sunday morning church service. The topic of women preachers has been paramount in the Southern Baptist denomination for many years.

If we explore Biblical text for the answers, it is evident in both the Old and New Testaments that God chose and activated both men and women to ministry.

Scripture teaches that God made men and women with equal value: “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:28).

The issue of women being silent in the New Testament church has been difficult to interpret. Many people would reference 1 Timothy 2:12 as a reason to support the silence of women in the church.

However, we must interpret this command as it pertains to the culture of the Jewish church, rather than for the church in our times.

The perspective that a woman cannot speak in the church is not consistent with other parts of the scriptures.  If the central premise from scripture is that a woman should be silent in the church, then why does the scripture address if a woman should teach or preach at all?

We also see in scripture that the gifts the Lord gives us are not gender-specific. Meaning, both men and women possess and use God’s gifts. This truth is further evidence in the Corinthian letter: “But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to EACH ONE for the profit of all.”

Why would God give women gifts if they could not speak in the church?

If a woman is called by God, covered by her husband or pastor (as the scripture reads), and confirmed by her leaders, she should be released to preach the message of Christ in any venues.

In our times, it is evident that God uses women in extraordinary ways in both sacred and secular organizations.

It is time the church in America lead the way against all oppression, and especially against the oppression of women.

Fox News contributor Sol Wisenberg said Friday that Sen. Bernie Sanders‘ idea for rotating Supreme Court justices would be “unconstitutional.”

During Thursday’s Democratic presidential debate, the Vermont independent said the current makeup of the court is “terrible” after the additions of Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh, but that he doesn’t believe in “packing the court.”

“I do believe constitutionally we have the power to rotate judges to other courts and that brings in new blood into the Supreme Court and a majority, I hope, that will understand that a woman has a right to control her own body and that corporations cannot run the United States of America,” he said.

Sanders’ bizarre pitch was quickly criticized by many in the legal community.

Responding on “America’s Newsroom,” Wisenberg – a lawyer and former Deputy Independent Counsel in the Whitewater/Lewinsky Investigation – called the proposal “idiocy.”

“It would be totally unconstitutional,” he said, adding that “packing” the court by expanding it to include more justices would not be unconstitutional, though it’s still a “radical idea.”

“President Roosevelt paid a heavy price for trying to do that. He was unsuccessful in it, but the Supreme Court hasn’t always had nine members,” he noted.

Meanwhile, President Trump told the Hill earlier this week that he would “definitely” fill another Supreme Court vacancy if one opened up prior to the 2020 presidential election.

“We have the Senate. We have a great Senate,” the president told the Hill, referring to a Republican majority on the chamber of Congress that rules on Supreme Court nominees.

“We have great people. If we could get him approved, I would definitely do it. … If there were three days left [before the 2020 election], I’d put somebody up hoping that I could get ’em done in three days, OK?”

Bella Thorne‘s ex, Mod Sun, is claiming that during their 15-month relationship, the couple got married and then divorced.

The 32-year-old rapper said in a recent interview with TooFab, “I got engaged, married and divorced in 15 months in Hollywood” and then confirmed he was referring to the 21-year-old actress and author.

“We’re out here putting rings on it! That’s what our generation does, we put a ring on it, you know what I’m saying?” he added.

BELLA THORNE POSTS HER OWN NUDE PHOTOS AFTER GETTING HACKED

This isn’t the first time rumors of their alleged married have spread. In February, Mod Sun, whose real name is Derek Smith, posted a video on social media of a ceremony but never confirmed what it was for.

“I know how lucky I am. I know I met u 1000 years ago,” he wrote at the time according to TooFab. “I won’t lose u this time. I promise to rub ur toes every night, that’s our deal. I love u @bellathorne.”

He recently changed the caption to: “We split but this was still a beautiful moment in my life.”

BELLA THORNE GETS CANDID ABOUT HER BISEXUALITY

The clip shows the couple kissing while wearing white, Thorne has a veil on, and someone is showering them with rose petals.

Meanwhile, in May 2018, Thorne showed off a huge diamond ring on her left ring finger and captioned the image, “Da baby iced me out.”

BELLA THORNE REVEALS SHE HAD TO TEACH HERSELF TO READ AND COUNT

In October 2018, during an interview with Wired, Thorne didn’t answer when asked if she was married. “You guys snuck that one in there, did ya? That is for my own personal knowledge and none for you,” she said.

Thorne’s reps did not immediately return Fox News’ request for comment.

Total solar eclipse will plunge parts of South America into darkness

A swath of South America is set to enjoy a total solar eclipse.

The July 2 solar eclipse will plunge part of the continent into darkness, with the line of totality stretching across areas of Chile and Argentina. Weather permitting, a partial eclipse will also be visible in some places in Ecuador, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay, according to timeanddate.com.

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun and scores a bull’s-eye by completely blotting out the sunlight.

Tourists from around the world are expected to flock to the line of totality to witness the unusual event.

The line of totality also passes within a mile of the site for the planned Giant Magellan Telescope at La Serena, on the edge of the Atacama Desert in Chile.

“We are very much looking forward to seeing the total solar eclipse in July,” said Patrick McCarthy, astronomer and vice president of the Giant Magellan Telescope, in a statement emailed to Fox News. “We will also enjoy the spectacular Chilean night sky and get a first-hand look at the progress of construction at the GMT site. It promises to be a great week.”

SOLAR ECLIPSE: THE BIG EVENT IS FINALLY HERE

The powerful 1,500-ton Giant Magellan Telescope, which is expected to be operational in 2025, aims to expand our understanding of the universe.

The full eclipse in South America begins at 2:01:08 p.m. EDT and ends at 4:44:46 p.m. EDT on July 2, according to timeanddate.com.

Many Americans, of course, will fondly remember the solar eclipse of 2017, which captivated millions of people across the country.

WHAT CAUSES A TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE?

The coast-to-coast eclipse on Aug. 21 of that year carved a 70-mile wide path of totality from the Pacific coast to the Atlantic, with hordes of people donning solar eclipse glasses to experience the unusual event. The eclipse, which began in Oregon and ended in South Carolina, was the first to cross the continental U.S. since 1918.

Families from all over the country flocked to cities in the line of totality, such as Charleston and Nashville, which hosted over 1 million visitors.

The Giant Magellan Telescope’s McCarthy told Fox News that he was in Oregon for the 2017 eclipse. “Words cannot describe the unique sensation of totality,” he explained, via email.

WHAT CAUSES A TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE?

The next total solar eclipse in the U.S. will be in 2024 and the next coast-to-coast one won’t be until 2045.

NASA will be closely monitoring the July 2 total eclipse in South America. “Studying the Sun during total solar eclipses helps scientists understand the source and behavior of solar radiation that drives space weather near Earth, which can affect the health of astronauts in space and the durability of materials used to build spacecraft,” it explains NASA, on its website. “Similar data will be important in planning NASA’s return of astronauts to the Moon in 2024 and eventual crewed missions to Mars.”

The space agency will be live-streaming the total solar eclipse with the Exploratorium in San Francisco. NASA will also be providing updates from its Parker Solar Probe.

In October 2018, the Probe clinched the record for closest approach to the Sun by a man-made object. In April 2019, Parker completed its second close approach, coming within 15 million miles of the star.

On its closest approach in 2024, the probe will come within 3.8 million miles of the Sun’s surface. It will also be traveling at approximately 430,000 mph, setting a new speed record for a manmade object.

Other spacecraft will also be monitoring the July 2 eclipse in South America. In addition to the Parker Solar Probe, NASA will be providing updates from its Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission, which uses four spacecraft in near-Earth orbit to study the area of space dominated by our planet’s magnetic field.

China Tesla fire caused by faulty battery module, report says

Tesla has determined the cause of a dramatic fire that engulfed one of its cars in a Shanghai parking lot in April, and says the battery was to blame.

Reuters reports that the automaker posted the news to its Weibo social media account, explaining that it tracked the issue back to a faulty module in the battery pack of the Model S. Details on the fault were not shared, but Tesla said it found no system defect.

Security camera footage of the incident shows smoke coming from under the car before it bursts into flames. Teslas are powered by thousands of cells that are grouped into a number of modules, which varies with the size of the pack. There are sixteen of them in its 85 kilowatt-hour capacity battery, for example, according to Electrek.

Jimmy Carter says investigation would show Trump didn’t win 2016 election: He’s in office ‘because Russians interfered’

Former President Jimmy Carter questioned Friday whether President Trump legitimately won the 2016 election over Hillary Clinton, arguing Trump is only in office because “the Russians interfered.”

The 94-year-old Democrat was speaking at a Virginia forum moderated by presidential biographer Jon Meacham, who asked how the U.S. should “deal with Russia” interfering in the country’s ability to have “free and fair elections.”

Carter answered by calling on Trump to acknowledge the interference and “condemn it”

“I think a full investigation would show that Trump didn’t actually win the election in 2016. He lost the election, and he was put into office because the Russians interfered on his behalf,” he said at the Carter Center event.

Meacham followed up by asking Carter if he was characterizing Trump as an “illegitimate president.” Carter sat silently for a few seconds as the crowd laughed before responding: “Basically, what I just said, which I can’t retract.”

Carter’s comments came on the heels of Trump meeting face-to-face with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the G-20 Summit in Japan, where he was criticized for jokingly telling Putin not to “meddle” in the upcoming election.

Trump, who was seated next to Putin, was asked by a reporter if he would tell “the Russian president to not meddle in the election.” There was some cross talk in the room at the time.

Trump, without looking at Putin, responded, “Of course I will. Don’t meddle in the election, president. Don’t meddle in the election.”

Trump’s tone and delivery were immediately called out. The AP ran a headline, “Trump Jokes to Putin: Don’t Meddle in the Election.”

The report said his tone was “open to interpretation but would seem to do little to silence questions about Trump’s relationship with Russia in the aftermath of special counsel Robert Mueller’s conclusion that his campaign did not collude with Russia in 2016.”
