The U.S. Coast Guard on Thursday suspended its search for two firefighters who vanished after embarking on a fishing trip off the coast of Florida almost a week ago.

SEARCH FOR FIREFIGHTERS WHO VANISHED WHILE FISHING INTENSIFIES, NEXT 24 HOURS CRITICAL

Hundreds of local, state and federal agencies– as well as civilian volunteers– have scoured tens of thousands of miles along the East Coast in a six-day long search for two off-duty firefighters, Justin Walker and Brian McCluney. The two failed to return from a trip on a 24-foot fishing vessel off the coast of Cape Canaveral on Friday.

“We have reached a point where our computer modeling and our ability to search a given location are no longer allowing us to search with any reasonable degree of probability of success,” Capt. Mark Vaun, commander of the Coast Guard Sector in Jacksonville, told news outlets.

Officials called on civilian boater volunteers at ports in Savannah, Ga., South Carolina and even as far north as New England to help with search efforts, as the Gulf Stream current may have pulled the vessel northward along the East Coast, Orlando’s WESH reported

McCluney works for the Jacksonville department while Walker is a master technician with the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department in Virginia, just outside the nation’s capital. The vessel they were aboard belonged to McCluney’s late father and has experienced mechanical problems in the past, McCluney’s wife told WKMG-TV.

Amazon fires turn political as Bolsonaro calls out Macron

French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday took to Twitter to urge countries from around the world to respond to the massive fires in the Amazon, but his remarks were met with hostility by Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro, who essentially said to stay out of it.

The comments played out on Twitter as news reports indicated that there is international concern about Bolsonaro’s environmental policy and its effect on the forest. The European Union called the forests there the world’s “lungs and life support system.”

The exact number of burning fires is somewhere around 2,500. Sao Paulo was in the dark for about one hour Monday afternoon as a result of the fires about 1,600 miles away. One Twitter user posted a photo of the clouds and said, “Imagine how much has to be burning to create this  much smoke.”

Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research counted 47,155 wildfires as of Tuesday, an 84 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

Bolsonaro, who admitted that farmers may be intentionally setting the fires to clear land, admitted that his country does not have the resources to control the fires, Reuters reported. He lashed out a Macron for what he said Is an attempt to “make personal political gains in an internal matter for Brazil and other Amazonian countries.”

Reuters reported that farmers in Brazil—if not outright—had “tacit” encouragement from Bolsonaro who has maintained that the Amazon should be utilized for Brazil’s economy. The news agency reported that a so-called “Fire Day” was designated to show the president that farmers were eager to work.

Bolsonaro’s office has denied claims by the EU that deforestation is at historic levels, but did mention the difficulties of policing an area of land “bigger than Europe.”

“How will you fight criminal fires in such an area?” he asked. About 60 percent of the Amazon is in Brazil. It is home to more than 30 percent of  the world’s plant and animal species.

Marcon appeared to take the EU’s position and stressed the urgency of the matter.

Wisconsin too cheesy for Dems? Many 2020 delegates snag hotels closer to Chicago: reports

Nearly half of the delegations scheduled to attend the 2020 Democratic National Convention in Milwaukee next July will stay in hotels across the state line in Illinois — stretching as far as the Chicago area, officials said.

But if Democratic leaders in Wisconsin were upset about a neighboring state getting all that business, most weren’t showing it.

“People eat, drink, celebrate and build the economy not when they’re asleep, but when they’re awake,” Ben Wikler, chairman of the Democratic party of Wisconsin, told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “And DNC delegates will spend every possible waking moment in Wisconsin.”

PROTESTS ERUPT AFTER DNC PUTS KIBOSH ON CLIMATE CHANGE-FOCUSED DEBATE

Madison, the Wisconsin capital, is about 10 miles closer to Milwaukee than Chicago is, but no state delegations will be staying there, according to the paper. The city’s mayor was unfazed.

“Though we’re not on the list to host any state delegations, we’ve actually got a lot of interest in room blocks for other folks,” Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway told the Journal Sentinel. “You know, we’re just looking forward to helping Milwaukee make this convention as much of a success as possible.”

“Though we’re not on the list to host any state delegations, we’ve actually got a lot of interest in room blocks for other folks.”

— Satya Rhodes-Conway, mayor of Madison, Wis.

Republicans, however, were quick to jab at Democrats over the accommodations for the convention.

“Dems can’t even go all in on Wisconsin!” tweeted Pat Garrett, a former spokesman for the Republican Party of Wisconsin.

“Democrats continue to look at states like Wisconsin and say, ‘It’s a nice place to visit, I just don’t want to stay there’,” Charles Nichols, a spokesman for the Wisconsin state GOP, told the Journal Sentinel.

The Democratic National Committee revealed delegation hotel assignments during its summer meeting in San Francisco on Thursday. Local newspapers received the list of hotel assignments from their state’s Democratic Party.

Next year’s convention, where the party will nominate its sole presidential candidate to take on President Trump in the general election, will be held in Milwaukee’s Fiserv Forum arena from July 13-16.

A total of 57 delegations are scheduled to attend the convention. Twenty-six of them will stay in clusters of hotels in Illinois’ Rosemont village, which is located directly next to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport in Cook County, and in the neighboring Lake County, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Milwaukee and Chicago sit approximately 92.1 miles apart along the shores of Lake Michigan. It takes about 90 minutes to travel between the two cities.

DNC Convention CEO Joe Solmonese explained why many delegates will sleep in the Land of Obama rather than closer to the convention site.

“Illinois has large hotels which lets us house delegations under one roof,” he told the Sun-Times.

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, a Democrat, welcomed the business the DNC convention will bring to his state’s economy. In fact, his spokeswoman sounded almost as if the convention would take place in Chicago.

“Pritzker fought to bring the convention to the Midwest in part because it’s great for Illinois businesses. Illinois will proudly welcome guests to the 2020 Democratic convention as we play a major role in showcasing the vitality and importance of the Midwest to the nation,” the spokeswoman, Emily Bittner, told the Chicago Sun Times.

“The thousands of visitors staying in Illinois or traveling here will provide a boost to our economy, and people from all over the United States will get to enjoy the world-class hospitality of our state,” she said.

DNC Chair Tom Perez told the Journal Sentinel that local organizers secured 17,000 hotel rooms for the convention in both Wisconsin and Illinois.

About 50,000 people, which include delegation members as well as media, donors, activists and volunteers, need lodging in order to attend.

Five thousand hotel rooms in Illinois were booked for delegation members. The large California delegation will stay in hotels in Rosemont, Ill., directly adjacent to Chicago. Members of the swing state of Pennsylvania’s delegation will stay further north, closer to the Wisconsin border, in Illinois’ Lake County.

Rosemont hotels will also host delegations from Alabama, American Samoa, Florida, Georgia, Guam, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming.

Lake County hotels will accommodate Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, New Mexico, North Carolina, Northern Marianas, Pennsylvania and Utah, the Sun-Times reported.

The remaining 31 delegations will stay in the Milwaukee area, both within the city and in neighboring suburbs, according to a list obtained by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. About 11,000 hotel rooms were booked in Wisconsin for these delegates.

Arizona, Democrats Abroad, Washington, D.C.; Iowa, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada, Oklahoma, South Carolina and South Dakota delegations will stay in Milwaukee airport hotels.

The Illinois delegation, which will require at least 200 rooms, will not stay within its home state, but instead in Waukesha, Wis., a Milwaukee suburb, the Journal Sentinel reported.

The Michigan delegation will also stay in Waukesha, located southwest of Milwaukee.

Indiana, Maine, Montana, Oregon and West Virginia delegations will stay in another suburb, Wauwatosa.

Serial killer who targeted gay men executed in Florida after eating hearty last meal

A mass murderer known as the “I-95 killer,” who spent the majority of 1994 targeting gay men — including a Navy World War II veteran — ate three burgers, fries and bacon before he was executed late Thursday in Florida.

Gary Ray Bowles, 57, was pronounced dead at 10:58 p.m. Thursday evening after receiving a lethal injection at Florida State Prison in Starke, the office of Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican, said. Bowles had already eaten his last meal by 3 p.m. that afternoon, prison officials told WJXT.

EXECUTION OF ‘I-95 KILLER,’ WHO TARGETED GAY MEN ALONG BUSY CORRIDOR, DELAYED AS LAWYERS APPEAL

The U.S. Supreme Court rejected a last-minute appeal filed by Bowles’ attorneys earlier Thursday that argued their client was not mentally fit to receive the death penalty, clearing the way for his execution to proceed as planned.

(Florida Department of Corrections via AP)

Bowles was condemned to die for his murder conviction in the 1994 slaying of Walter Hinton, a 42-year-old who was strangled and had his head smashed with a concrete block, in Jacksonville Beach, Fla. That was one of the six known killings that terrorized the Interstate 95 corridor that year and earned him the nickname of the “I-95 killer.” In each case, Bowles had a signature: He stuffed the victims’ throats with objects, including rags, toilet paper, dirt, leaves — even a sex toy.

Police were on Bowles’ trail after his first killing in 1994 in Daytona Beach. Bowles left investigators a slew of evidence, including a probation document left at the scene and ATM footage showing him trying to withdraw money from the victim, John Hardy Roberts,’ bank account.

Milton Bradley, a Navy World War II veteran, was living in Savannah when he met the serial killer in May 1994 at a now-closed gay bar in the Georgia city’s historic district, a former police detective told the Associated Press. His body was found bludgeoned at a golf course with leaves and dirt stuffed down his throat.

DEATH ROW INMATE EVOKES CHRIST AT EXECUTION

Bowles maintained he was heterosexual but has acknowledged letting gay men perform sex acts on him for money. Prosecutors said it was how the self-described hustler survived: often using his targets for money or a place to stay, but eventually snapping and killing them.

The mass murderer was raised in West Virginia, where he experienced drugs and violence at a young age. His father was a coal miner who died of black lung disease before he was born. His mother remarried multiple times, and his first two stepfathers were abusive, according to court records.

His mother and brother have testified that Bowles began drinking, smoking marijuana and huffing glue when he was 11. When he was 13, he fought back against his second stepfather, smashing a rock into his head and nearly killing him, The Associated Press reported, citing court records.

He also had a history of violence against women. Bowles was convicted of beating and raping his girlfriend while living in Tampa in 1982 and sentenced to eight years in prison. The victim reportedly sustained severe injuries.

Fox News’ Greg Norman, Vandana Rambaran and the Associated Press contributed to this report.

ABC’s choice of anti-Trump reporter Jorge Ramos as debate moderator draws criticism

ABC’s selection of Jorge Ramos as a moderator for their Democratic debate coverage next month is drawing some criticism on social media.

The Univision anchor has said “neutrality” on President Trump “is not an option” and has also called Trump the “most anti-immigrant president” in decades, according to The Hill.

Ramos has loudly criticized the administration’s immigration policies and in one contentious exchange in 2015, then-candidate Trump told Ramos to “sit down” and “go back to Univision.” He was thrown out of the Dubuque, Iowa, event for asking a question without being called.

Ramos has also referred to Trump as “the most divisive, polarizing and disrupting figure in American politics in decades,” The Hill reported.

Some social media users were quick to pan ABC’s decision to include Ramos in its debate coverage.

“Jorge Ramos gets to do a debate!!,” one user wrote. “Who’s next, Rosie O’Donnell? Rob Reiner? Kathy Griffin? Bette Midler?”

“Jorge Ramos is the love child of [CNN’s Jim Acosta and Don Lemon],” another user wrote, “combined with a love affair w/ [Hillary Clinton to complete the triangle.”

Another commenter used ABC’s selection of Ramos for the debate to call out CNN’s Brian Stelter for criticizing Fox News’ hiring of Sarah Sanders.

“They just announced that Jorge Ramos will be a moderator in the next dem debate, and this buffoon wants to talk about bias?” the user wrote.

Both CNN and NBC took heat for selecting Trump critics as moderators in their debates. Don Lemon, who hosts “CNN Tonight,” and Rachel Maddow who has an opinion show on MSNBC, are both unapologetically anti-Trump.

Ramos will be joining ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, David Muir and Linsey Davis in covering the debate, which will be held in Houston over two nights, Sept. 12-13.

Louisiana boy, 5, brings cocaine to school, police say; 2 adults arrested

A man and woman in Louisiana were arrested after a kindergartner brought three bags of cocaine to a New Orleans-area school Tuesday, investigators said.

A teacher called a school resource officer after the 5-year-old student was seen holding a bag of white powder, later discovered to be cocaine. The officer found two additional bags of the drug, Slidell, La., police said in a Facebook post.

“Throughout the investigation, it was apparent the child had no knowledge about the drugs,” police said.
