2020 Dem Seth Moulton: Trump ‘harder to beat’ than party thinks, but right coalition can best him

President Trump will be harder to defeat than Democrats believe, though he can lose in 2020 if the right coalition unifies against him, according to Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass.

Moulton, a presidential candidate, told Bret Baier on “Special Report” that though he missed the qualifying threshold for this week’s primary debates, he is the right person for voters to get behind.

“They want someone who can actually build the coalition we need to defeat him, because I think Trump is going to be a lot harder to beat than many Democrats think,” he said of voters.

“That means a coalition that includes everyone in our party, plus independents, those Obama-Trump voters, and even some disaffected Republicans.

“I can build that coalition because I’ve built it in the most difficult circumstances before — in the middle of a war.”

The Massachusetts Democrat mentioned his service in the Iraq War, claiming his role as Marine platoon commander showed he can unite Americans from all walks of life.

“My fundamental job was to bring together this incredibly diverse group of Americans from all over this country, with different religious beliefs, different political beliefs, and get them united behind a common mission to serve America in the middle of a very divisive time: in the middle of a war that many of us disagreed with,” he said.

“That’s the leadership we need from the next president of the United States.”

Moulton criticized the fact that Trump did not serve in Vietnam, instead receiving a deferment.

Baier noted that the lawmaker has called the president “unpatriotic” for the circumstance.

Moulton said he stands by that allegation.

“I think that if you lie to get out of the war, that makes you unpatriotic,” he said.

“Especially, knowing that there’s not like there is some empty seat with Donald Trump’s name on it that went to Vietnam — someone had to go in his place, some patriotic American who was willing to step up and to serve the country even in the midst of a terrible war so that no one had to go in his place.

“That doesn’t make you a patriot — to dodge service.”

Moulton was not one of the 20 candidates invited to participate in this week’s Democratic debates, which were to be held Wednesday and Thursday in Miami.

Gutfeld on the hypocrisy of the media around the border

Left-wing employees at Wayfair are staging a walkout to protest selling beds to facilities that house migrant children.

Yeah, they’re outraged our government would provide beds to kids.

What’s the alternative?

WAYFAIR WALKOUT: HOW FURNITURE RETAILER CAN AVOID ‘SLIPPERY SLOPE’ OF POLITICAL PRESSURE

Letting the children lie on the floor covered in foil, like leftovers from those pre-Trump days when no one cared?

Now you have people who, just months ago, laughed off this humanitarian crisis because it didn’t serve their politics.

You wonder why America hates these ghoulish hypocrites. When they’re not mocking you, they’re demonizing you. If you worry about families crossing, you’re a “monster.”

But when they worry about families crossing? They’re heroes.

Screw ’em. Misery didn’t matter to them when the crisis wasn’t working for them. But now, migrants are a boon for publicity-crazy Democrats and has-been actresses.

GUTFELD: ERIC TRUMP SPITTING INCIDENT SHOWS ‘POLITICS IS NOW A PERSONAL VENDETTA’

Nancy Lee Grahn tweeted a shot of children wrapped in emergency blankets in a detention center — while blaming President Trump for it.

If the time and date hadn’t been cropped out of the picture, you’d see it occurred during President Obama’s term in office.

Now Nancy’s deliberate lie was retweeted 30,000 times. Now 30,000 people are as dumb as she is. For the left, it wasn’t a crisis then, and it wasn’t a crisis six months ago, when they were focused on “collusion” as a weapon to unseat Trump.

But now, “collusion” has failed. They claim Trump tortures kids, while they deny the same kids their beds.

This is how Democrats are “solving” the border crisis: making it worse.

So no cots for tots. What’s next? Boycott dairies that send milk to feed them?

Now they’re using pictures of the dead. As if they actually care. They don’t.

Eric Trump’s claim that a waitress spat on him at a Chicago restaurant on Tuesday evening is proof political disagreements have become extremely charged, according to Greg Gutfeld.

The media also claims some blame for such politically-charged public incidents, Gutfeld noted Wednesday on “The Five.”

“You realize a lot of the responsibility is in the media that has raised the temperature in the last couple years,” he said.

ERIC TRUMP SAYS CHICAGO RESTAURANT EMPLOYEE SPIT ON HIM: REPORT

“The Trump family can’t possibly be as bad as the media says they are,” Gutfeld added. “That’s why politics is now a personal vendetta.”

Eric Trump said in an interview he was spat on by a restaurant worker Tuesday night in an incident he called a “disgusting act.”

“For a party that preaches tolerance, this, once again, demonstrates they have very little civility,” Eric Trump told Breitbart.

RESTAURANT GROUP RESPONDS AFTER EMPLOYEE IS ACCUSED OF SPITTING ON ERIC TRUMP, SAYS SHE’S BEEN ‘PLACED ON LEAVE’

“When somebody is sick enough to resort to spitting on someone, it just emphasizes a sickness and desperation and the fact that we’re winning,” Gutfeld added.

The “Greg Gutfeld Show” host claimed the media hurts such situations by suggesting people may gain publicity or notoriety from doing things such as this incident involving Eric Trump.

“The media makes it so that people think this might help them or make this emotionally gratifying thing by attacking somebody,” Gutfeld said. “But you just look like a loser.”

The Chicago Police Department confirmed they were at the scene “assisting” the U.S. Secret Service. They did not confirm Eric Trump was the target.

In a statement from the restaurant company which owns The Aviary, The Alinea Group, they called the altercation between Eric Trump and their employee “unfortunate.”

“No customer should ever be spit upon. We have not yet spoken with the employee, but our HR team has, in the meantime, placed her on leave,” The Alinea Group told Fox News.

Debate Night: All eyes on Warren as 2020 Dems meet for first showdown

Westlake Legal Group 694940094001_6050491473001_6050491660001-vs Debate Night: All eyes on Warren as 2020 Dems meet for first showdown Paul Steinhauser fox-news/politics/elections/presidential-debate fox-news/politics/2020-presidential-election fox-news/politics fox-news/person/elizabeth-warren fox-news/person/cory-booker fox-news/person/beto-orourke fox-news/person/amy-klobuchar fox news fnc/politics fnc article 453777c2-ace9-5d5e-9330-a0af76d6d87e

Ten candidates will be in the spotlight Wednesday night as the first round of Democratic presidential nomination debates kicks off in Miami, but it’s the White House hopeful standing center stage who likely will grab the most attention.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s enjoying a steady rise in the polls the past two months, as the populist champion from Massachusetts has dished out one progressive policy proposal after another. And this showdown gives the senator and experienced debater an opportunity to build upon her recent success, before a national audience.

KURTZ ON DEBATES: A CROWD IN SEARCH OF A BREAKTHROUGH

At the same time, it creates the opportunity for a breakout star should one of her lower-polling rivals steal the spotlight. And with some of the bigger names headlining Thursday’s debate, the set-up deprives Warren of the opportunity to challenge front-runners like Joe Biden directly.

But ahead of the first debate, Warren appeared to be focusing on amplifying her criticism of President Trump — giving a hint of her debate-stage approach Wednesday night, when she may try and avoid tangling with primary rivals in favor of hitting the commander-in-chief.

At a town hall in Miami on Tuesday, the very vocal Trump critic slammed the president for vowing “great and overwhelming force” should Iran attack “anything American.”

“He has created a crisis that has taken our country to the brink of war,” Warren emphasized. “He has not made us safer. He has made the United States more at risk. He’s made the Middle East more dangerous. He has made the entire world a more dangerous place.”

Warren also made headlines hours before the debate, protesting outside a facility in nearby Homestead where some 2,300 migrant children are being held.

“This is not what we should be doing,” she argued.

Taking aim at the president’s illegal immigration detention policies, Warren said that “these children pose no threat to people here in the United States and yet they are locked up for weeks, for months, because our government is following a policy of inflicting maximum pain.”

Those comments on immigration and Iran may just be a preview of what Warren plans for her first debate performance.

Joining Warren on the stage tonight – Sens. Cory Booker of New Jersey, Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, former Rep. Beto O’Rourke of Texas, former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro, Washington Gov. Jay Inslee, Reps. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii and Tim Ryan of Ohio, former Rep. John Delaney of Maryland, and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT TONIGHT’S DEBATE

Longtime Democratic strategist Jamal Simmons pointed to “at least three real candidates on the stage the first night: Beto O’Rourke, Elizabeth Warren, and Cory Booker. I think each one of them has a chance to do some things to distinguish themselves.”

And he sees an advantage for the White House hopefuls in the first night’s debate, which will be absent the two top-polling candidates – former Vice President Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont.

“I think the benefit of being in that night is you don’t have to worry about the Biden and Bernie storyline,” added Simmons, a presidential campaign veteran. “I think there’s going to be an opportunity to try to get a personal connection and not worry about taking down anybody. I think the benefit of the first night is you don’t have to go after anybody. You can tell your own story.”

Seven months after the Democratic nomination battle ignited, and with seven months to go until the first votes in Iowa and New Hampshire, former Democratic National Committee chair and Fox News contributor Donna Brazile said the first round of debates, hosted by NBC News, will see some candidates “get out of the so-called box.”

But Brazile, speaking on Fox News’ ‘America’s Newsroom,’ warned that for others in the record-setting field of nearly two-dozen contenders, the debate will “prove maybe this is not their time.”

BRAZILE: THINK OF DEBATES AS A JOB INTERVIEW TO CHOOSE OUR NATION’S CEO
Regardless of what’s occurred so far on the campaign trail, veteran Democratic consultant and communications strategist Lynda Tran characterized the debates as a reset.

“I would look at the debates this week for each of them — whether they are leading the pack or rounding out the bottom of the polls — as their first, best opportunity to introduce or reintroduce themselves to the largest audience of Democratic primary voters yet rather than see the stage as their last chance to stand out from the crowd,” said Tran, a founding partner of the political and communications shop 270 Strategies.

Brevity is not often a trait perfected by politicians, but time will be a precious commodity for the candidates on the stage Wednesday.

The contenders will have 60 seconds to answer questions from the moderators and 30 seconds to respond to follow-ups. There will be no opening statements, with only closing remarks for the candidates to give a condensed version of their stump speeches. The two-hour debates will each have five segments separated by four commercial breaks. Each candidate will likely grab seven to 10 minutes of speaking time.

“It’s a little bit of exaggeration calling it a debate,” Biden joked earlier this month while campaigning in Iowa. “It’s like a lightning round.”

The scarcity of time may lead some of the lower-tier candidates to fire away in hopes of capturing the spotlight.

“Some of the candidates lower in the polls may want to force sound bites and come out swinging, but it’s going to be tough for anyone hitting the debate stage for their first time to do so in a way that doesn’t come across as staged (pun intended) and inauthentic,” Tran warned.

TOP NINE MOMENTS IN PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY DEBATE HISTORY

One of those candidates is Delaney, who declared his candidacy nearly two years ago.

He described the debate as “a huge opportunity.”

And Delaney predicted that “what’s going to happen is that the American people are going to see a few new candidates that they haven’t seen as much of and after they watch the debate they’re going to say ‘some of these people are really good including Delaney.’”

But the centrist candidate, who’s not shy about blasting rivals he feels are too far to the left, promised that “I’m going to talk about how some of these people are running on pie in the sky ideas or impossible promises and I have real plans … yeah, I’m going to call out some of these ideas which don’t make any sense.”

NRA’s top lobbyist resigns amid turmoil and infighting in gun lobbying group

The National Rifle Association’s top lobbyist, long viewed as the likely successor to longtime Chief Executive Officer Wayne LaPierre, resigned Wednesday, according to reports.

The lobbyist, Chris Cox, resigned just about a week after the NRA put him on administrative leave, claiming he was part of a failed attempt to extort LaPierre and push him out.

Cox played his usual prominent role at the NRA’s annual meetings and there was little public evidence that he and LaPierre or the NRA’s Board of Directors were at odds.

NRA EXEC WAYNE LAPIERRE ALLEGES OLIVER NORTH TRYING TO FORCE HIM OUT

His resignation was confirmed by NRA spokesman Andrew Arulanandam. No other comment was immediately made about his departure.

Cox had been the executive director of NRA’s lobbying arm, the Institute for Legislative Action, since 2002. He was credited with leading efforts to allow a decadelong ban on “assault weapons” to expire in 2004, an achievement that allowed the gun industry to resume selling what the industry calls “modern sporting rifles” and critics claim are used too often in mass shootings.

When he was suspended, Cox said in a statement that allegations he had been part of a group seeking LaPierre’s ouster were “offensive and patently false. For 24 years I have been a loyal and effective leader in this organization.”

Cox’s resignation came within hours of the NRA officially severing ties with Ackerman McQueen, the Oklahoma-based public relations firm with which it’s been embroiled in a legal tangle over expenditures.

The NRA has paid Ackerman McQueen tens of millions of dollars in the decades since they partnered up to shape the group’s messaging.

A prominent part of the NRA’s public relations has been NRATV, featuring hosts addressing everything from immigration to gun rights. In a statement from LaPierre posted on the NRA website, the gun lobbying group said it would no longer be airing live programming on NRATV, and would be evaluating that operation’s future.

US, India ‘working together’ amid Iran crisis, despite trade tensions

Despite growing disagreements over trade and tariffs, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss international cooperation amid the Iran crisis.

On Wednesday, Pompeo recognized the two countries’ differences while meeting with both Modi and foreign minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar in New Delhi but made sure to emphasize that the countries must work together toward a common goal.

The United States and India have shared a political and strategic common ground on Iran. Both countries have hit the rogue nation with economic penalties this year.

“I think that’s a concern to which Secretary Pompeo was certainly very, very receptive,” said Jaishankar. “I think he understands that this is today the world’s fifth-largest economy, which imports 85 percent of its energy, a large part of it from the Gulf.”

Pompeo praised India’s efforts in cutting oil from Iran, stating that Tehran “is the world’s largest state sponsor of terror.”

He continued, “There’s a shared understanding of the threat and a common purpose to ensure that we can keep that energy at the right prices and this … terror regime poses to the entire world.”

Pompeo said the collaboration will strengthen bilateral ties.

“Great friends are bound to have disagreements,” Pompeo said after meeting with Jaishankar.

Jaishankar agreed, commenting the United States and India “need to filter through the noise and get down to the basics of the relationship.”

This fat cat went to fat camp and now she’s a star, but it doesn’t look like she had a good time doing it.

Laila is a cat from Gainesville, Fla., that is apparently obsessed with food. A rescue, she was reportedly found close to starvation. Since then, she’s developed a healthy appetite.

At her heaviest, Laila weighed in at 23 pounds, Fox 35 reports. According to her owners, she couldn’t “jump on anything.” Obviously, this is a problem that needed to be fixed. Her owners took her to a vet, who came up with a surprising solution.

Once a week, Laila visits ‘fat camp’ at the University of Florida. There, she goes through a series of workouts specifically designed to help her lose weight. These include running on the treadmill and even going for a swim. Of course, being a cat, Laila doesn’t look too thrilled with either of these, especially the water exercises.

Fortunately, as time went on, Laila grew to enjoy the exercises, her owners’ claim. “She loves swimming,” they told Fox 35.

Two more Broward County Sheriff’s deputies were fired for “neglect of duty” in their response to last year’s massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Sheriff Gregory Tony announced Wednesday.

Deputies Edward Eason and Josh Stambaugh were terminated following an internal affairs investigation into seven officers who responded to the Feb. 14, 2018 shooting in Parkland. Two other officers, Deputy Scot Peterson and Sgt. Brian Miller were fired earlier this month. Accusations against three other deputies involved in the internal affairs probe were “non-sustained” and they will return to duty, Tony said.

“This was neglect of duty, and it was one of the most severe consequences as we lost 17 people,” Tony said of the fired officers.

Stambaugh failed to run toward gunshots on multiple occasions to stop the shooter, according to the report. “Stambaugh appeared to take cover over assisting deputies entering a possible hot zone,” it said based on videos from his body camera. At one point, Stambaugh told an officer from the Coral Springs Police Department nearing MSD’s building 12 — where the shots were being fired — to “watch yourself” as he remained behind cover.

In Eason’s case, the report reveals he provided inconsistent and conflicting statements to investigators. It also shows that instead of responding to the gunshots at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High, he went to nearby Westglades Middle to lock it down. Eason, however, “never transmitted his actions,” and took 19 minutes to check the doors of the middle school to see if it was locked down.

Eason was also faulted for not writing an official report after receiving a tip in February 2016 that the shooting suspect, Nikolas Cruz, was making threats on social media to shoot up a school. Tips to the FBI about Cruz also were not followed up, a separate investigation has found.

Peterson, the school’s resource officer the day of the shooting, has been arrested and charged with eleven criminal counts child neglect, culpable negligence and perjury

A full 124-page internal affairs report released later Wednesday, first obtained by the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, detailed the case against the fired officers.

The report alleged the officers being investigated neglected their duty by failing to, “take timely action on the occasion of a crime when gunshots were heard in Building 12 or attempt to locate and confront the active shooter or determine the source of the gunshots.”

Scott Israel, the sheriff at the time, was removed from office by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for similar reasons. He is appealing that decision before the state Senate.

Cruz, 20, faces the death penalty if convicted in the shootings. His lawyers have said he will plead guilty in return for a life prison sentence but prosecutors have rejected that offer.

‘View’ co-hosts defend Iran questioning Trump’s mental health: ‘Everybody does it’

“View” co-hosts Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg suggested Wednesday that it wasn’t a big deal for Iran to question President Trump’s mental fitness, noting that they both already did.

Their comments came after co-host Sunny Hostin, a frequent Trump critic, said that she didn’t think it was appropriate for Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to call the White House’s policy “mentally retarded.” That description came from an initial translation but another translation reportedly said Rouhani used the term “mentally handicapped.”

Rouhani was responding to Trump’s decision to impose additional sanctions on the regime.

“I’m not a fan of this president but I also think it is so inappropriate that the Iranian president is saying that the United States president is suffering from mental illness,” Hostin said.

Goldberg and Behar immediately asked why. “Why? Everybody says it,” Behar said before laughing.

“Why? We say it,” Goldberg also said.

“I just think that he’s a foreign leader,” Hostin responded, “and I don’t think we should cheer the fact that a foreign government is talking about our president in that way.”

Co-host Meghan McCain said she agreed with Hostin and suggested it was hypocritical for Iran to criticize the United States when it “throws gay people off of roofs for being gay and stone women in the street for wearing tank tops.”

Behar, earlier in the discussion, suggested that name-calling had become normal in foreign relations and that Trump might even become “pen pals” with Rouhani.

“Remember when [North Korean dictator] Kim Jong Un called [Trump] a dotard (doddering old person) ? That’s what they do. They call each other names. I mean, this is what we’re living with now. Trump does it. They do it, then the next thing you know, they’re pen pals,” she said.

“He’s writing letters to Kim now and Kim is sending him little love notes,” Behar added.

Trump, on Tuesday, appeared to respond to Rouhani’s insult by tweeting a series of blistering criticisms of his regime.

“Iran’s very ignorant and insulting statement, put out today, only shows that they do not understand reality,” Trump said. “Any attack by Iran on anything American will be met with great and overwhelming force. In some areas, overwhelming will mean obliteration.”
