Iceland unveils memorial for melted glacier

Icelandic officials and environmental activists on Sunday unveiled a memorial plaque, read poems and held a moment of silence to say an official goodbye to the country’s first glacier recognized by the country as disappearing due to climate change.

Scientists declared in 2014 the Okjokull ice sheet in west Iceland no longer fulfilled the criteria to be considered a glacier after it progressively melted throughout the 20th century.

About 100 people made the two-hour hike up a volcano to attend the unique ceremony.

Icelandic geologist Oddur Sigurðsson, who had declared the ice mass “extinct,” brought a death certificate. Children set down a plaque to the glacier, called “Ok,” to signify its loss of ice.

“Ok is the first Icelandic glacier to lose its status as a glacier. In the next 200 years all our glaciers are expected to follow the same path,” the inscription on the plaque, written by Icelandic author Andri Snaer Magnason, read.

“We know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it,” the inscription added, signaling a warning to future generations.

The plaque also noted the level of heat-trapping carbon dioxide.

NASA satellite images from 1986 showed Okjokull as a solid white patch of ice. Another image taken Aug. 1, 2019, showed barely any ice.

The glacier used to stretch six square miles, Sigurdsson said. Less than 1 square miles remained.

“We see the consequences of the climate crisis,” Icelandic Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir said. “We have no time to lose.”

Okjokull was the first of Iceland’s glaciers recognized as extinct. All of its ice masses are expected to be gone within 200 years, Sigurdsson said.

Jakobsdottir said she will make climate change a priority during her upcoming meeting with Nordic leaders and German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Reykjavik on Tuesday.

SUV belonging to El Paso woman killed in massacre is stolen, vandalized

Soon after a man buried his longtime partner in a funeral attended by hundreds of strangers last week — in the wake of the massacre inside an El Paso, Texas, Walmart — it emerged that her SUV had been stolen and vandalized.

Antonio Basco, 61, of El Paso, made headlines when he invited the public to attend the funeral of Margie Reckard, 63, because they didn’t have nearby relatives.

Reckard was one of 22 people shot and killed inside the Walmart on Aug. 22. The killer said he targeted Mexicans and warned of a “Hispanic invasion” of Texas.

This past Friday morning, hundreds of people from all over the country – including from Dayton, Ohio, the site of a mass shooting shortly after the attack in El Paso – filled up the La Paz Faith Memorial & Spiritual Center. A line snaked around the church and on the blocks beyond. Hundreds of flower arrangements were also sent.

However, Vanessa Kondow revealed on Facebook that somebody had stolen and wrecked Reckard’s Ford Escape, perhaps as recently as Saturday night, the day after the funeral. Kondow said she and her husband, who both work at a towing company, towed the damaged vehicle to Basco’s home after it was found.

“WTF is wrong with people!? He just buried his wife yesterday and now this s—,” Kondow wrote. “He told my husband that whoever took it also stole a pressure washing machine from a small trailer he used to use for mobile car washing. Share the s— out of this post to find the m—— who would do this.”

Kondow did not immediately respond to a Fox News request for comment.

Angel Gomez with Operation Hope, which coordinated many of the funerals for the victims, confirmed to Fox News that Reckard’s Ford Escape had been stolen and trashed.

He said he spoke with Basco about the incident and expected to speak with him again about getting him a new car or repairing the existing vehicle. Casa Ford in El Paso confirmed to KVIA-TV that it would help to get Basco a replacement vehicle.

Some commenters on Kondow’s post offered to help Basco get a new car.

“Just so you all know. Mr. Basco does not want a new vehicle. The Ford Escape was his wife’s and he’s always wanted to keep it. He has a vehicle of his own. If anyone wants to help, he most likely just wants the Escape to be repaired so he has that memory of his wife, Margie,” Kondow posted.

Texas woman pleads guilty to making up illnesses of son who had 323 medical visits

A Texas woman accused of exposing her son to unneeded medical tests and procedures — including taking him to hospitals more than 320 times — has pleaded guilty to recklessly causing injury to a child, according to a report.

Kaylene Bowen-Wright pleaded guilty this past Thursday in Dallas County court, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported

Sentencing for the 35-year-old, who faces up to 20 years in prison, is set for October.

Child Protective Services removed the boy from her care in 2017 after it was alerted by a Dallas hospital that medical staff determined he didn’t have cancer or many of the symptoms Bowen reported.

In its petition for removal, the newspaper reported, CPS said the boy had been to hospitals and pediatric centers in Dallas and Houston at least 323 times in all, and he had 13 major surgeries between 2009 and 2016.

The boy’s father, Ryan Crawford, told the newspaper Friday: “I am happy that she decided to do the right thing. Eventually the lies had to stop.”

Crawford was made the sole managing conservator of the now 10-year-old.

“Medical abuse is underreported every day,” the father added. “Now it’s time to move forward, and make sure no child has to suffer the abuse my son endured.”

Israeli military kills 3 Palestinians near Gaza fence after firing toward ‘armed suspects,’ officials say

Israeli soldiers killed three Palestinians near Gaza Strip’s heavily guarded perimeter fence after armed “terrorists” were spotted trying to “infiltrate into” the country, officials announced on Sunday.

Israeli troops also severely wounded a fourth person near the perimeter fence, the Gaza Health Ministry said Sunday.

In a tweet on Sunday, which included a 30-second video, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) wrote, “Last night, our soldiers monitoring Israel’s security fence with #Gaza identified this terrorist squad armed with rifles attempting to infiltrate into #Israel.”

The tweet continued, “In the time it takes to watch this video, our troops had already arrived at the scene in order to stop the terrorists.”

The IDF said the video showed three “terrorists” near the security fence with at least one carrying a rifle.

A helicopter and a tank fired at the “armed suspects” overnight, according to the Israeli military.

Following weeks of calm, Palestinian militants have attempted a number of raids over the weekend.

On Saturday, the IDF tweeted, “3 rockets were fired from #Gaza at #Israel, 2 of them were intercepted by the Iron Dome Aerial Defense System. This is the 2nd consecutive night rockets have been fired from Gaza at Israeli civilians.”

The tweet continued, “We just responded with strikes on Hamas’ underground infrastructure in Gaza. Israel’s target: Terror.”

No injuries were reported from the rockets Palestinian militants had fired. In response, Israel struck Hamas targets; nobody was reported hurt.

Pete Buttigieg dodges question on mandatory ‘assault weapon’ buyback during CNN interview

Pete Buttigieg, the South Bend, Ind., mayor and 2020 presidential hopeful, refused Sunday to say if he would support a buyback program for so-called assault weapons if elected president, during an interview with CNN.

The Democrat appeared on “State of the Union,” where host Jake Tapper asked why he wouldn’t join fellow presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke in supporting such a measure.

“Beto O’Rourke supports mandatory buybacks for so-called assault weapons… You’ve stopped short of that,” Tapper said. “But, if you think so-called assault weapons don’t belong in our neighborhoods… why wouldn’t you support mandatory buybacks of assault weapons?”

Buttigieg said America has a long way to go on gun control and mentioned background checks, red-flag laws, and a high-capacity magazine ban, but did not address the issue of buybacks whatsoever.

BUTTIGIEG STAFFER CALLS GOP CONGRESSMAN TO APOLOGIZE FOR WISHING HE HAD BEEN HIT WITH URINE

“Well, I think we’ve got a lot of work to do right now on the basics,” he replied. “Universal background checks, red-flag laws, a ban on new sales of these assault weapons and high capacity magazines.

“Things that the majority, in many cases the vast majority of Americans support — that still haven’t gotten done. I think we’ve got some fundamentals we’ve got to take care of and then we’ll work to figure out how to make sure that we’re not forever the only country with more guns than people.”

Buttigieg was one of the first 2020 candidates to issue a public call for gun control in the wake of the shootings earlier this month in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton Ohio. He said at the time, “We cannot allow the Second Amendment to be a death sentence for thousands of Americans a year.”

Buttigieg’s comments came as gun-control activists held rallies across much of the country Sunday, calling for stricter federal gun laws.

Florida man accused of mass shooting threats after texts emerge

A man in Florida was arrested on Friday after investigators were alerted to text messages in which he allegedly detailed plans “to shoot as many people as he could in a large crowd,” according to a local sheriff’s office.

Tristan Scott Wix, 25, of Daytona Beach, was charged with making threats to commit a mass shooting, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office reported.

In one text, he allegedly indicated he wanted his shooting to break a world record.

The Coast Guard was continuing its search Sunday for two missing firefighters who failed to return from a boating trip off Florida’s coast Friday.

Justin Walker and Brian McCluney left Port Canaveral — 50 miles east of Orlando — Friday morning in a 24-foot center console vessel to head toward the “8A” reef to fish, the Coast Guard said in a statement Saturday.

Family members notified officials when they didn’t return by Friday evening.

The Coast Guard said reports of a similar boat 50 miles off Jacksonville turned out to be unrelated debris, Fox 30 noted.

As of Sunday, search crews had covered 4,800 square miles, the Coast Guard said in a Facebook post.

A Wisconsin family getting ready for dinner received a surprise visitor in store-bought salad greens this past Tuesday.

Karlie Allen recorded the encounter on her phone as the family spotted a live frog stuck to the side of the packaged Simple Truth organic greens.

Yells and disgusted looks by family members could be seen and heard in the video, with Allen screaming before exclaiming, “OMG, it’s literally alive.”

“I’m thinking, ‘One, how the heck did that get in there?’ and ‘Two, that is absolutely disgusting,'” Allen told WTMJ.

The origins of the frog could be traced to a Pick ‘n Save in Glendale, where the family had bought the salad greens on Tuesday.

Allen said she decided to bring the contaminated product back to the grocery store where she showed the clerk the video and received a refund. She added that wanted to bring the frog as well, but it escaped overnight.

While she didn’t receive any answers from the clerk as to how the frog ended up in the salad, Simple Truth and Pick n’ Save’s parent company reached out to her to comment on the situation and apologize.

“These situations happen from time to time when Organic products are involved,” Roundy’s Supermarkets, Inc. said in a statement. “USDA Certified Organic items must be free of synthetic additives and certain pesticides. Although rare, from time-to-time we do see insects and other small animals such as frogs make it through packaging with fresh produce items. In this instance, the customer returned the organic lettuce for an even exchange.”

Simple Truth also apologized, saying: “We are so sorry that the Simple Truth product had a live frog inside of the carton. We definitely want to follow up with the supplier. Please advise of the Kroger Plus Card that was used for the purchase, the date of the purchase and if you still have the plastic carton, what is the UPC Code and the manufacturer code for the mix.”

After the amphibian escapade, Allen says she didn’t plan to eat salad any time soon.

TMZ reports that WeTV may cut ties with the troubled 40-year-old matriarch following her crack cocaine arrest in March and her conduct following the bust.

Sources told the site that producers tried to get Mama June help, but she refused.

While they won’t abandon her on a personal level, insiders claimed that the potential for a fourth season of “Mama June: From Not to Hot” rests on whether or not she’ll clean up her act.

Mama June reportedly has been behaving erratically, with The Sun reporting she and Doak were selling off many of her personal possessions, including her own bed, two desks, a car stereo, coat hangers and various toys. A video obtained by TMZ from inside the home indicates that the property is mostly empty.

Trump warns China against ‘another Tiananmen Square,’ says Tim Cook made ‘compelling’ tariff case

President Trump told reporters on Sunday that Apple CEO Tim Cook privately made a “very compelling argument” that the administration’s tariffs on Chinese-assembled goods have made an unfair impact on the California-based tech giant, because its chief rival, Samsung, has conducted most of its manufacturing in South Korea and did not have to pay the levy.

The president also issued a stern warning to China, saying there might not be an end to the trade war if the government resorts to “violence” to crush demonstrators in Hong Kong.

Trump announced last week he would delay major new tariffs on China for three months, and his latest comments hinted that more concessions may be forthcoming. The new ten-percent tariffs had been slated to go into effect Sept. 1, and would have affected Apple’s signature iPhones.

“I had a very good meeting with Tim Cook,” Trump said at an airport in New Jersey, on his way back to the White House. “I have a lot of respect for Tim Cook, and Tim was talking to me about tariffs. And, one of the things, and he made a good case, is that Samsung is their number-one competitor, and Samsung is not paying tariffs because they’re based in South Korea.”

Trump continued: “It’s tough for Apple to pay tariffs if they’re competing with a very good company that’s not. I said, ‘How good a competitor?’ He said they’re a very good competitor. … I thought he made a very compelling argument, so I’m thinking about it.”

Earlier in the day, Trump had sounded a note of optimism on China, tweeting, “We are doing very well with China, and talking!”

TRUMP SUGGESTS ‘PERSONAL’ MEETING WITH CHINESE LEADER ON HONG KONG PROTESTS

At the airport though, the president took a tougher stance. He warned that a trade deal would not be possible if the Chinese government used force to crack down on demonstrators in Hong Kong, who largely have been protesting against an extradition bill proposed by Hong Kong’s government that would permit certain extraditions to mainland China.

“I think it’d be very hard to deal if they do violence, I mean, if it’s another Tiananmen Square,” Trump said. “I think it’s a very hard thing to do if there’s violence.”

The president also rebuffed weekend reports that the U.S. was open to doing business with the Chinese telecom giant Huawei. The U.S. had placed the company an export blacklist in June citing national security concerns amid worries that it’s worked with Chinese spy networks.

Reuters and The Wall Street Journal reported that the White House was planning to announce on Monday a 90-day extension to a license allowing Huawei to provide service for U.S. customers. The temporary extension would be intended to allow the company to fulfill orders placed prior to the blacklist taking effect.

“I don’t want to do business at all because it is a national security threat,” Trump told reporters. “We’ll see what happens. I’m making a decision tomorrow.”

Those remarks echoed Trump’s comments at the White House last week.

“We are not going to do business with Huawei,” Trump said at the time. “And, I really made the decision. It’s much simpler not doing any business with Huawei. … That doesn’t mean we won’t agree to something if and when we make a trade deal.”

But, the president’s messaging has not always been consistent on the matter. In June, after meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Trump had suggested that “we will keep selling” to Huawei, prompting administration officials to walk back the suggestion.

Throughout, Apple has focused its political capital on preserving its profit margins. In June, the company wrote to U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer to urge the administration not to pursue tariffs against China.

“The proposed tariff list covers all of Apple’s major products, including iPhone, iPad, Mac, AirPods, and AppleTV, as well as the parts and batteries used to repair products in the United States,” Apple said.

“U.S. tariffs on Apple’s products would result in a reduction of Apple’s U.S. economic contribution,” the company continued. “U.S. tariffs would also weigh on Apple’s global competitiveness. The Chinese producers we compete with in global markets do not have a significant presence in the U.S. market, and so would not be impacted by U.S. tariffs.”

In a public-facing news release Thursday, ahead of Cook’s dinner with Trump, Apple highlighted its growing investments in the U.S. economy.

“A significant amount of the jobs Apple supports in the US are found in the booming app economy, which is currently responsible for 1.9 million American jobs — an increase of 325,000 in the last two and a half years,” Apple wrote in the release.

The company noted that it directly “employs 90,000 employees in all 50 states, putting the company on track to create 20,000 new jobs across the US by 2023.”

For his part, Trump seemed receptive to the overtures even before his latest face-to-face with Apple’s CEO.

“Having dinner tonight with Tim Cook of Apple. They will be spending vast sums of money in the U.S. Great!” Trump tweeted on Friday night from Bedminster, New Jersey, where the two also dined last August.
