Blake Shelton denies shading Lil Nas X in Trace Adkins duet referencing ‘Old Town Road’

Despite Lil Nas X smashing records left and right with “Old Town Road” and Billy Ray Cyrus, not everyone is a fan.

Blake Shelton and Trace Adkins‘ collaboration, “Hell Right,” references the county-rap hit, and their sentiments about the song seem less than flattering.

In “Hell Right,” Shelton, 43, sings, “Then the girl from the small town took off the ‘Old Town,’ put on a little Hank Jr.” Adkins, 57, then quips, “Thank God.”

LIL NAS X BREAKS BILLBOARD RECORD FOR MOST WEEKS AT NO. 1

Still, “The Voice” judge denied, through his rep, that he was shading Lil Nas X.

“It’s absolutely not throwing any kind of shade at Lil Nas X at all,” Shelton’s rep told Variety in a statement on Friday. “Blake says this literally has nothing to do with anything at all except how much the song is played. It could have been ‘Achy Breaky Heart’ or any other (overplayed) song.”

Shelton’s rep added, “Blake talked to Billy Ray and he thought it was funny.”

Shelton previously told Billboard of the track, “You can raise hell, or you can raise hell right. It’s about cutting loose and having fun the right way. I spend a lot of time in Los Angeles these days, but when I hear songs like this on the radio, I am immediately thinking about being back home and what I’d be doing if I was there. The first time I heard ‘God’s Country’ I was on my ranch in Oklahoma. As a guy who actually lives this lifestyle, ‘Hell Right’ hits me in the soul now just as much as ‘God’s Country’ did then.”

Neither Shelton nor Adkins actually wrote the lyric. The barnburner was penned by David Garcia, Brett Tyler and Michael Hardy.

Duane Allman’s old guitar ‘Layla’ sells for $1.25 million

Fans of Duane Allman in Macon, Georgia, say they didn’t expect the late musician’s old guitar to sell for $1.25 million at a recent auction.

The gold-topped guitar is the one Allman played in the hit song “Layla,” where he performed with Eric Clapton, The Telegraph reported .

Until recently, the guitar affectionately called “Layla” had been on display at the Allman Brothers Band museum at The Big House in Macon.

MANAGER: GREGG ALLMAN PLAYED MUSIC TIL THE VERY END

“I don’t think anybody expected that,” Museum Director Richard Brent said of the amount. “The history of it is what sold it.”

Brent said the man who bought the guitar at the auction is an out-of-town collector who wishes to remain anonymous.

The buyer has agreed to share the instrument with the museum during certain times. That means it will be coming back to the museum in late November, Brent said.

“It will be coming back to The Big House in late November,” Brent said. “We couldn’t ask for more than that.”

Duane Allman played the guitar on the first two Allman Brothers records, and in “Loan Me a Dime” with Boz Scaggs, Brent said. The recording “Layla” with Derek and the Dominoes is among the last times Allman played that guitar.

Las Vegas Hard Rock Hotel and Casino to close completely during renovations

Las Vegas is going to rock a lot less for more than half a year.

For eight months, the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino will close its doors while it undergoes renovation. The iconic Vegas location is expected to reopen eight months later, although it will be rebranded by its new owners.

The hotel and casino will close in February 2020, Fox 47 reports. The plan was originally for the hotel to stay open for most of the renovation and only shut down for four months. Unfortunately, it was decided more time was needed.

In 2018, Virgin Hotels purchased the hotel, giant guitar and all. Renovations were originally scheduled to be phased throughout the property, which would have allowed it to remain open for several more months.

In a statement obtained by Fox 47, JC Hospitality President and CEO Richard Bozworth said, “We determined that a phased closing of four months, followed by a total closure of four months was not efficient from a construction process nor could we provide a hospitality service experience our guests deserve.”

His statement continued, “Therefore an approximate eight-month closure would be most efficient and ensure a timely opening prior to January 2021. We might be ready in October, but construction is an imperfect process. Until early February 2020, it is business as usual at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Las Vegas. Virgin Hotels Las Vegas promises to be one of the most exciting, vibrant, and anticipated properties to open in Las Vegas in years.”

The hotel will close after the 2020 Super Bowl, which is scheduled for February 2 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, USA Today reports.

The Hard Rock Hotel is expected to be rebranded as a Virgin property after the renovations are complete, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported in April 2018.

Among other things, The Hard Rock Hotel and Casino is famous for being featured in the finale of the 1992 Rick Moranis movie “Honey, I Blew Up the Kid.”

GOP becoming endangered species in California, as key stronghold turns blue

Former President Ronald Regan said during his 1984 reelection campaign that Southern California’s Orange County is the place where “good Republicans go to die.”

For decades, the wealthy, suburban county – about 20 miles south of downtown Los Angeles – has been a conservative stronghold in a state that has become increasingly liberal. But since the 2018 midterm elections, the so-called “Orange Curtain” has come down and Democrats have made huge gains in an area once dominated by Republicans.

HOW A MINOR CHANGE IN CALIFORNIA’S ELECTION LAW MAY HAVE DOOMED REPUBLICANS’ CHANCES

The shift speaks to the GOP’s ever-shrinking foothold in the Golden State. Just recently, the number of registered Democrats surpassed the number of registered Republicans in Orange County for the first time since the Watergate era, with the county Registrar of Voters – as of Wednesday – having 548,952 Democrats compared with just 548,095 Republicans.

While not an enormous advantage, it does mark a drastic shift from the Republican Party’s halcyon days of the early 1990s, when it enjoyed a 22-percentage point advantage over Democrats, and mirrors a trend seen in recent years across California’s more conservative areas.

In the last few years, neighboring San Diego County flipped to the Democrats and, on election night last November, California’s 25th Congressional District went Democrat for the first time since 1993 when upstart politician Katie Hill defeated incumbent Republican Steve Knight. The 2018 midterm elections also saw all of Orange County’s districts go Democratic as well as most of San Diego County – turning the state’s congressional delegation, and statehouse, an even deeper shade of blue.

Republicans now hold only seven of the state’s 53 congressional seats, and both seats in the Senate are held by Democrats.

“We have seen since 2016, and even before that, that we’re becoming bluer and bluer,” Ada Briceño, the chair of the Orange County Democratic Party, told Fox News. “We know that trend is going to continue. The changes in our demographics are going to ensure that and the fact that we have activists and leaders on the ground working extremely hard to make sure that we are moving and speaking and enamoring people.”

Both Democratic and Republican leaders have cited the changing demographics and voter base in the region as one of the main reasons for the shift in political alignment in recent years.

The immigrant population of Orange County, for example, grew five times as fast as the general population between 1980 and 2000 and, despite a slowing influx of new immigrants, the region’s Asian and Latino populations are likely to continue on an upward trajectory thanks to the children of immigrant families born in the United States.

PELOSI FACES SHOUTS FOR IMPEACHMENT AT CALIFORNIA DEMOCRATIC PARTY CONVENTION

In California’s 48th Congressional District, which last fall saw longtime Republican fixture Dana Rohrabacher lose to Democrat Harley Rouda, the Latino population went from 38,803 in 1980 to 145,585 in 2017 – or from 8 percent of the district’s population to 21 percent.

Similarly, in the state’s 45th Congressional, where Democrat Katie Porter won last November against incumbent Republican Mimi Walters, the Asian-American population skyrocketed from 14,528 in 1980, or 4.4 percent, to almost a quarter of the district’s total population in 2017 with 175,540.

Republican leaders in California admit that they need to do a better job of fielding candidates that appeal to a diversifying voter base, but say that Democrats are playing “identity politics” and that eventually the pendulum will swing back toward the right.

“The Democrats are really good at playing identity politics, but identity politics is a sugar high,” Tony Krvaric, the chair of the Republican Party of San Diego County, told Fox News. “Eventually people are going to wake up and realize Democrats have done nothing for them.”

ANALYSIS: CALIFORNIA POLITICS WILL GET CRAZY IN 2019.

Democrats balk at this assertion, arguing that while they have certainly worked to recruit younger and more diverse voters, the spike in registrations to their party has included people from all walks of life and has been buoyed by the party’s stance on issues ranging from immigration to the environment compared with those of the Republicans – and, in particular, the hardline rhetoric of President Trump.

“The rhetoric that Trump is putting out there is really turning Orange County folks off,” Briceño said. “We had a guy in his 70’s who had been a Republican for over 20 years come into the office just the other day and switch over to become a Democrat because of Trump’s rhetoric.”

“[Trump] has given us a nice gift,” Briceño added.

Political observers in the state tend to agree with this assertion, recalling the last time a place like Orange County flipped to the Democrats was following Richard Nixon’s resignation from White House in the wake of the Watergate scandal.

“Trump people all think it’s some conspiracy, while people who don’t like him say it’s a big change in ideology,” Will Swaim, the president of the California Policy Center, told Fox News. “But anytime you see a sudden shift in voter registration, it’s not a shift in philosophy or ideology. It’s about the person at the top of the ticket.”

Swaim added that while many Republicans in the region may agree with some of the Trump administration’s policies, specifically regarding the economy and trade, the president’s boisterous and combative style has also rubbed many the wrong way.

“It’s really the president’s way of behaving that offends people,” he said. “They may like his policies, but they don’t like how he behaves.”

Despite the recent shift toward the Democrats in places like Orange and San Diego counties, Swaim said that, if historic trends are any indication, the areas will revert back to the GOP.

“The last time this happened, the phenomenon was pretty short-lived,” he said. “Conservative principles will continue to thrive here, but the Democrats have made some inroads.”

His brother Dominic posted an emotional and grief-stricken status on Facebook, saying “my brother gone.” in the comments of his post.

Benson played for eight years in the National Football League, rushing for 6,017 yards and 32 touchdowns for the Bears, the Cincinnati Bengals and, briefly, the Green Bay Packers. He had his best year as an NFL player in 2009 with the Bengals, where he rushed for 1,251 yards and six touchdowns.

He also had his share of legal troubles throughout his time in the NFL, ranging from allegedly operating a boat while intoxicated in 2008 to assault charges in 2010 and 2011. Two days before his death, he appeared in a Travis County courtroom where he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor drunken-driving charges from an incident on Feb. 18, 2017.

He received an outpouring of posts online from former teammates, friends and fans.

Former acting ICE Director Tom Homan slams sheriff for releasing illegal immigrant, says he should have called the feds

After a North Carolina sheriff released an illegal immigrant on bond in a child rape case, former acting ICE Director Tom Homan said the law enforcement officer should have called the federal government and had the suspect detained.

The suspect was finally apprehended by federal authorities, two months after Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden ignored an ICE detainer order and released him from custody.

“Mecklenburg County wants to be a sanctuary county. This sheriff has made a choice to stop being a cop and be a politician,” Homan said on “Fox & Friends Weekend.”

Homan said this is a common practice among local law enforcement and began listing cases where suspects were released on bond, despite being accused of heinous crimes while in the country illegally.

FORMER ACTING ICE DIRECTOR TOM HOMAN: ATTACK ON IMMIGRATION OFFICES WAS AN ACT OF ‘DOMESTIC TERRORISM’

“I wrote a few cases down,” he said. “Numerous sex offenses, people arrested for assault and larceny — assault with a deadly weapon, rape with indecent liberties with a child, numerous drug offenses, felony possession of a gun,  assault by strangulation… These are the type of people he’s releasing, rather than calling ICE.”

More from Media

Charlotte police arrested Oscar Pacheco-Leonardo on June 14 on charges of rape and indecent liberties with a minor. Records show Pacheco-Leonardo was accused of having sex with a child under the age of 13. He was due to appear back in court in October.

McFadden issued a statement, saying, “Bonds are not set by the Mecklenburg County sheriff’s office… We do not have any part of the bonds being set and we do not have any part of the magistrate releasing these individuals… When the person meets the condition of his bond by law, I’m supposed to allow him to leave.”

Homan claimed the statement does not excuse McFadden from his responsibilities, and said he should have contacted ICE immediately.

“He has a telephone. Pick up the phone and call ICE,” he replied. “Let’s say his lawyers say, ‘don’t honor the detainer we think there’s a liability issue’… You can pick the phone up and call ICE before you release that person. It doesn’t cost him anything.”

“He’s knowingly releasing a public safety threat back into the public,” Homan continued. “He says he’s protecting the immigrant community. He’s doing the exact opposite. Because these people will re-offend in the very community in which they live…. he’s putting the immigrant community at greater risk of crime.”

White woman arrested after holding 4 black teens fundraising for football team at gunpoint, police say

Four black student athletes who were going door to door in their Arkansas community to fundraise were held at gunpoint and forced to the ground by a white woman until police arrived at the scene, officials said.

The teenagers were walking through Wynne, a city roughly 100 miles northeast of Little Rock, around 10 a.m. on Aug. 7 to raise money for their high school football team when Jerri Kelly, 46, stopped them.

Investigators responded to a “suspicious persons” report to find the boys — two of whom were wearing football jerseys, according to school officials — on the ground with a woman standing by with a gun, police said. An officer asked the teens to stand up, and they explained they were selling discount cards for their school sports program.

“We was scared,” one of the teens told police, The Washington Post reported. “I thought she was going to shoot me in the head, how she was acting.”

The boys told authorities Kelly shouted at them, told them to get down and spread their legs and place their arms behind their backs, and called them liars when they said they were fundraising for school. When one of the boys reportedly tried swatting at a mosquito, Kelly allegedly told him she’d shoot if he didn’t stop moving.

INDIANA POLICE OFFICER WHO FATALLY SHOT BLACK MAN RESIGNS, UNION SAYS, DUE TO STRESS, MEDIA ATTENTION

A responding officer recognized one of the boys and told them they could get up and walk over to his patrol vehicle, the Post reported, citing a police report. At that point, Kelly allegedly called them back and began to lecture them about how her actions were not racially motivated.

A warrant was put out for Kelly’s arrest on charges of aggravated assault, false imprisonment and endangering the welfare of a minor following an investigation, and she turned herself in Aug. 12, Cross County Sheriff’s Department Captain Jeff Nichols said. She was released that night on $10,000 bond.

Kelly — the wife of Cross County Jail Administrator Joseph Kelly — didn’t get her mugshot taken until days later because she had a “medical emergency” while she was getting booked, Nichols said. Following backlash from the community that she received preferential treatment, Kelly returned to the jail on Thursday after her initial court appearance to have her mugshot taken.

“She was afforded the same booking process and procedures as anyone that’s brought into our facility,” Nichols said. “She received no preferential treatment.”

It was not immediately clear what the medical emergency was that prevented Kelly from getting her photo taken, but her brother told WHBQ-TV that Kelly is disabled and suffers from severe seizures. He also claimed Kelly felt threatened by the children.

Her husband resigned from his position on Friday, according to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. Cross County Sheriff David West said the jail administrator “did nothing wrong, but with his wife and the way this blew up, he decided it was best.”

Kelly reportedly told police in a statement she “felt remorse” after learning they were fundraising, but said the boys “were not acting as such at the initial encounter.”

The superintendent of the Wynne School District said the district is considering stopping door-to-door fundraisers due to the incident.

Kristin Maher: Parents, back-to-school can bring the ‘shame game’ — Here’s how to stop it

As the first day of school looms and parents everywhere rejoice, it’s important to remember that while it’s often an exciting time and a fresh start, back-to-school can be a peak time for shame.

Shame is not a feeling limited to adults. It’s something that our kids face, too, and though they might not be able to put a name to the feeling, back-to-school season can be a minefield for kids and shame.

With the prevalence of mental health disorders on the rise in American children ages 3 through 17, we, as parents, should always be on guard when it comes to our children and their feelings. When it comes to shame, we can help our kids identify and name shame when it rears its ugly head. Here are a few things we can look for and some steps we can take in order to help our children get through shame attacks, if and when they strike.

The first thing to look out for is self-depreciation. When I’m feeling shame, it’s my go-to, and I have noticed that it’s my 7-year-old’s as well.

“I’m the worst.”

“Gosh, how could I be so stupid?”

“I’m just a bad kid.”

“I will never be able to figure this out/get this right/get invited to…”

Those comments may seem like simple exaggerations, but they are not. Shame wants you to believe those things are true. It’s not simply that you made a mistake or forgot how to do a math problem. You can fix a mistake or relearn a math equation. Shame wants your child to believe that the reason they did those things is because, at your child’s core, they are bad, they are dumb, they are worthless. That maybe they can fix that mistake, but even fixing that mistake won’t fix them.

At our house, we try to call out that type of talk immediately. A lot of times, you may not even realize you’re speaking it out, so having the entire family on alert is helpful. When someone in our house says, “I’m the worst,” another family member will reply, “No, you are not; that is just your Awfulizer (what we call shame) talking. You are not the worst; you just made a mistake.” It may seem silly, but there can be a feeling of relief in hearing someone deny the idea that you are bad.

The second thing to look out for is a pattern of reaction. We need to remember that we all react to shame in different ways. When at my lowest point, I focus on pleasing everyone. My needs do not matter; I must make everyone else happy, and when everyone likes me, I will feel better. One of my kids completely withdraws when they are feeling shame. Their instinct is to quit and hide. It’s hard for them to have anyone even look at them when they are feeling their lowest. Another of my kids tries to out-shame their shame. If they are feeling bad about themselves, then everyone else in the room will, too.

None of these reactions look alike, and some are easier to respond to with compassion than others, but they are all reactions to feeling shame. As a parent, it’s important to pay attention and recognize how your child reacts to shame so that you can be ready to spring into action.

While I sadly do not have a quick “cure” to dissipate shame mid-attack, I do know that these responses, while instinctive, are not effective. When my children or myself start to spiral into one of these reactions, I have found the best antidote is patience and talking.

What does this look like? It may mean sitting on the edge of my kid’s bed, simply waiting for them to feel secure enough to poke their head out of their covers. It may mean waiting on the other side of a slammed door, helping my child breathe through their anger outburst. Or it may mean forcing myself to lower my hand from volunteering from another project. And while it may look different from child to child, it always involves me being present and knowing that they may not be able to talk right away about the shame that’s bothering them.

But the talking is key. Your child needs to know there is a safe space to talk about their feelings and insecurities. They may not have all the words to explain it, but knowing they can figure it out with you is huge. Shame grows in silence, making you feel more and more isolated the longer it goes unaddressed. Reach out to your child and let them know that they’re not the only ones who have these feelings or think these thoughts; knowing they’re not alone will help to release the hold that shame may have on them.

These are just a few of our family’s strategies to protect against and address shame. Sadly, there is no way to avoid shame or a quick fix for it. It is a slow and steady process, one we must repeat time and again. But by working together as a family, I believe we are setting our kids up to be more shame resilient and ensuring much more confident futures.

Let’s be vigilant to call out shame when we see it, giving our kids and our families the tools to stop shame in its tracks this school year.
