NASCAR sponsorship deal with Slayer hits skids before Bristol Night Race

Heavy metal band Slayer’s sponsorship of a car in NASCAR’s race Saturday never reached the starting line.

The band’s label says “reactionary concerns” from other sponsors shelved the plan.

“All Slayer signage has been removed from the car that was to be piloted by Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series veteran JJ Yeley,” Nuclear Blast USA said on Twitter Friday.

Yeley announced Aug. 9 that Slayer would sponsor his Ford Mustang for Saturday’s Bristol Night Race at the Bristol Motor Speedway, Rolling Stone reported Saturday.

“NASCAR racing and Slayer have a lot in common” guitarist Kerry King said a few days later, according to the magazine. “Both are extremely fast, intense and aggressive. I can think of nothing more rad than seeing the Slayer logo on Rick’s car with JJ behind the wheel. I’m sure Disciples of everyone involved will be completely stoked on the bond between these two fierce entities.”

The band was going to use the sponsorship to promote its “Final World Tour.”

But the car’s owner, Rick Ware Racing, slammed on the brakes, releasing a statement that cited differences in beliefs with the bands, whose albums included “God Hates Us All,” according to Yahoo Sports.

“There were no contracts or monetary transactions between either party,” the statement said. “Unfortunately, Slayer’s brand image and beliefs, and Rick Ware Racing and our long-time partners’ image and beliefs do not align. As a team owner, we thought it would be best to forgo the partnership.”

The race took place as scheduled with Denny Hamlin beating Matt DiBenedetto to the finish line in the 500-lap event.

Yeley, in the Ford with logos from a storage company, finished far behind the winner after being introduced to fans with Slayer’s “Raining Blood.”

Lightning too close for comfort during school counselor’s campus walk in shocking video

A South Carolina school counselor was caught on surveillance video narrowly escaping danger after nearly being struck by lightning on campus last week.

Romulus McNeill, a counselor at the Academy for Technology and Academics in Conway, was walking across campus to get to his car while carrying an umbrella on Thursday when he was nearly hit during a storm.

Before he walked out, while others were debating whether to wait for the storm to pass, McNeil “took a chance” and said “I hope I don’t get struck by lightning,” he told WMBF. It nearly happened.

Released security footage shows McNeil walking across a sidewalk when lightning strikes right beside him. Alarmed, McNeil seemingly jumps up and drops his umbrella, before picking it up and quickly walking off.

“I felt a shock,” McNeill said. “It was just kind of insane for it to happen like that. I was just trying to get home and get something to eat.”

He wrote on Facebook Friday that the footage shows his “crazy experience with lightning,” and added he’s super “thankful to have been able to motor scoot out of there without major [injuries.]”

Denny Hamlin wins NASCAR Bristol race

The winner climbed from his car and immediately apologized for denying an underdog his first career victory. The runner-up, in tears over his near miss, was raucously embraced by the crowd for his oh-so-close effort.

Westlake Legal Group bris Denny Hamlin wins NASCAR Bristol race fox-news/auto/nascar fox-news/auto/attributes/racing fnc/auto fnc Associated Press article 0e75b6c1-bd36-5bfb-b811-9e87d014ae62

Bristol Motor Speedway was a bizarre mix of emotions Saturday night after Denny Hamlin chased down Matt DiBenedetto to spoil a Saturday night upset. DiBenedetto learned this week that Leavine Family Racing won’t bring him back for a second season, and he has no job lined up for 2020.

“I’m so sorry to Matt DiBenedetto, (crew chief) Mike Wheeler. I hate it. I know what a win would mean to that team,” Hamlin said as soon as he exited his car. “But I’ve got to give 110 percent.”

Hamlin was the first Toyota and Joe Gibbs Racing driver to start from the pole this season but his race was a roller-coaster that began when his car was damaged when he bounced off of Jimmie Johnson. He later had a loose wheel, fell down a lap and seemed out of contention for his second career victory at Bristol.

NASCAR GETTING BIG WHEELS IN 2021

At the same time, DiBenedetto was working his way toward the front and put his Toyota out front for a race-high 93 laps. He needed redemption — and a win would have put him in the playoffs, no less — but he again wound up victim to the Gibbs juggernaut. Gibbs has a logjam of talent, Leavine is a Gibbs partner, and Gibbs needs DiBenedetto’s seat next year to promote Christopher Bell from the Xfinity Series.

“I wanted it to bad,” DiBenedetto said. “I’m sad. Congrats to Denny, raced hard and I’ve been a fan of his since I was a kid. To be racing door-to-door with him at Bristol in front of a great group of fans — I’m trying not to get emotional but it’s been a tough week and I just want to stick around and want to keep doing this for a long time to come. I am not done yet. Something is going to happen.”

The crowd roared its support as DiBenedetto’s interview was broadcast on the infield big screen.

Roughly 45 minutes later, DiBenedetto found Hamlin on the NBC Sports set and interrupted his interview. The two hugged, and Hamlin pulled DiBenedetto close and whispered into his ear for a long moment.

He remained apologetic for spoiling what would have been a defining moment for DiBenedetto, as well as Wheeler, Hamlin’s former crew chief.

“It is the worst person possible to have to pass with eight to go. My history with Mike Wheeler … Matt is a fantastic driver,” Hamlin said. “I have no doubt he’s going to land on his feet, something better, and if he doesn’t, all you car owners are idiots. Someone with that much talent deserves to be racing for wins on a regular basis.”

Hamlin and DiBenedetto raced side by side for several laps before Hamlin completed the decisive late pass and sealed his fourth victory of the season.

DiBenedetto was a career-best second.

Hamlin got over his initial disappointment for DiBenedetto and praised his No. 11 team for its resilient race and the way he picked his way through traffic to reclaim the lead.

“Between my spotter and the crew chief, just stayed on me to not get anxious, just kind of take my time. I had plenty of time,” Hamlin said. “I just worked him over, worked him over. I knew I didn’t want to show him the bottom (lane) until I knew I could make the pass. I ran the top, ran the top, ran the top, got the position on the bottom and finished it.

“We had a great car that could move around. Came back from a couple laps down and here we are.”

DiBenedetto’s fight to hang on to the victory was hampered when he encountered Ryan Newman, a driver trying to make the playoffs. Newman refused to give an inch as DiBenedetto tried to put him down a lap, and contact between the two cars caused DiBenedetto’s Toyota to tighten up as Hamlin closed the gap.

A DiBenedetto victory would have dramatically changed the playoff picture. There are two races remaining to set the 16-driver field and only nine drivers have locked in their spots. With seven open, a first-time winner would have grabbed a coveted spot.

Johnson has never missed the playoffs since the format began in 2004 but the seven-time champion dropped to 18th in points after a disappointing night at Bristol. Clint Bowyer also dropped out of the top-16, but is only two points behind the final slot, now held by teammate Daniel Suarez.

THE REST OF THE FIELD: Brad Keselowski finished third in a Ford, and was followed by Gibbs driver Kyle Busch, who came from 31st to finish fourth. He received thunderous boos during driver introductions, but the eight-time Bristol winner simply guzzled something from a red plastic cup and thanked the fans for coming.

Chase Elliott was fifth and the highest-finishing Chevrolet. Kyle Larson was sixth, followed by Bowyer and Suarez, who moved ahead of Bowyer in the standings via stage points. Kurt Busch and Ryan Blaney rounded out the top 10.

UP NEXT: The Cup Series is off next weekend and returns to competition Sept. 1 at Darlington Raceway. NBC Sports expects Dale Earnhardt Jr. back in the booth for that event after he skipped Bristol following a crash landing of his airplane Thursday near the track.

Small plane crash into New York home leaves 2 dead, 1 missing, officials say

At least two people were killed and one person was unaccounted for after a small plane crashed into a home in New York on Saturday, triggering a massive fire, officials said.

New York State Police Capt. Paul DeQuarto said at a news conference the plane crashed around 4:30 p.m. in the rural town of Union Vale, located about 15 miles southeast of Poughkeepsie.

“It’s a very sad and tragic event that happened tonight,” DeQuarto told reporters.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the Cessna 303 left Sky Acres Airport in LaGrangeville, a mile from the crash, and was headed to Republic Airport on East Farmingdale, Long Island.

DeQuarto said at a news conference that the plane first took off from the Orange County Airport in Montgomery, New York, then stopped to refuel 40 miles away at the Sky Acres Airport before continuing toward Long Island.

DeQuarto added the Cessna had some kind of engine trouble before it struck the side of the two-story house, but he had no other details.

The National Transportation Safety Board said on Twitter that it is investigating the crash.

Noel Yeatts: Millions of girls are missing in India — Here’s why you should care

In the past three months, 216 babies were born in a handful of villages across northern India, according to a recent report. Not a single one of those babies was a girl.

This was no crazy coincidence or fluke.

Today the topic of abortion is trending as strongly as ever before, especially with Democratic presidential nominating race heating up. Regardless of where you stand on the matter, abortion is certainly a women’s issue in India. But not for the reasons you might think.

THE ‘VILLAGE’ OF LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES BATTLING HUMAN TRAFFICKING

Indian baby girls are being aborted simply because of their gender. For a family living in poverty, a house full of sons is deemed more profitable, since they are considered the main breadwinners. Afraid of what a daughter will cost, many families choose to simply never have one.

More from Opinion

Despite the fact that gender-selective abortions were outlawed by the Indian government in 1994, the practice still occurs. This is why so many baby girls were “missing” from those northern Indian villages. And it’s just one example of a much larger trend across the country.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE OPINION NEWSLETTER

While many other nations have either a balanced gender ratio or one that tips in favor of females, India’s population is skewed. As of 2018, there were only 92 females for every 100 males in the country. According to the data, India is home to 63 million fewer women than it should be.

The Banchara have a centuries-old tradition called “nari mata.” According to this tradition, the oldest daughter of each family is expected to become a sex worker — sometimes as young as 12 years old.

When I look at these numbers, all I can think about are the girls I have met on my trips to India. These statistics and stories remind me that there are places around the world where women are still not valued. They receive less access to education and fewer job opportunities. They are viewed as property, something to either toss away or use for profit.

Over the past few years, we’ve seen progress in the fight for better treatment of women in many countries. Women are now able to have a voice that has been denied them for centuries. But when I read about India’s missing females, I remember that the fight for freedom isn’t over.

In India’s Banchara community, women are considered valuable only if they provide financially for their families. Although these females were allowed to live, they are thrust into a life of pain and abuse. They might not go “missing” at birth, but they will live their lives on the outskirts of society with no voice, no choice and no freedom.

The Banchara have a centuries-old tradition called “nari mata.” According to this tradition, the oldest daughter of each family is expected to become a sex worker — sometimes as young as 12 years old.

The reason? To pay for her brothers’ marriage dowries so they can make a good match and go on to have more sons.

Meanwhile, she will likely spend her entire life selling herself to pay off the debt, or at least until she is too sick with STDs to continue working.

These girls, who become sex workers when they are barely teenagers, are trapped in a form of culturally mandated slavery. And they are raised to believe there is no way out.

But there is a way out. When women are taught there is another option, given access to education, and surrounded with a supportive community, they are able to thrive.

This is exactly what our organization, World Help, is doing at our “Freedom Home” located in the heart of the Banchara community. As the girls in this home grow up and have a chance to start their own careers, they are able to give back to their families, their communities, and their countries.

And statistics show that investing in girls improves health, delays marriage, prevents early pregnancies, and improves economies.

These girls are able to show how valuable they truly are — just as valuable as any boy.

Only when this happens will practices like nari mata and gender-based abortions finally come to an end.

These may be “women’s issues,” but they are so much more than that. Valuing women quite literally can change the world. And by working to set women free through education, vocational training and more, we can make sure that in the future, there are no more missing girls.

Afghanistan wedding hall suicide bombing leaves at least 63 dead, more than 180 others wounded

At least 63 people were killed and nearly 200 others were wounded by a suicide bomber at a wedding hall in Afghanistan on Sunday, officials said.

The attacker set off the explosives among the roughly 1,200 guests at the event at the Dubai City wedding hall in Kabul, Nusrat Rahimi, a spokesperson for the Interior Ministry, told The Associated Press. An affiliate group of the Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack.

“There are so many dead and wounded,” survivor Ahmad Omid said. “I was with the groom in the other room when we heard the blast and then I couldn’t find anyone. Everyone was lying all around the hall.”

The blast, which left 182 people injured, occurred in a western Kabul neighborhood that’s home to many of the country’s minority Shiite Hazara community, was the deadliest attack in Kabul this year.

A local affiliate of ISIS in Afghanistan wrote on an ISIS-linked website on Sunday that a Pakistani-ISIS fighter seeking martyrdom was responsible for the suicide bombing, and claimed a car bomb was also detonated in the attack.

The bombing broke a period of relative calm in Afghanistan’s capital city, after 14 people were killed and another 145 were wounded — most of them women, children and other civilians — on Aug. 7 when a Taliban car bomb aimed at Afghan security forces detonated explosives.

Kabul’s huge, brightly lit wedding halls are centers of community life in a city weary of decades of war, with thousands of dollars spent on a single evening. Such wedding halls also serve as meeting places and, in November, at least 55 people were killed when a suicide bomber sneaked into a Kabul wedding hall where hundreds of Muslim religious scholars and clerics had gathered to mark the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad.

The Taliban denied involvement in that attack, and IS did not claim responsibility.

Charlie Hurt: Biden’s gaffes must be ‘hugely embarrassing’ to Obama

Westlake Legal Group Joe-biden-obama-AP-Reuters Charlie Hurt: Biden's gaffes must be 'hugely embarrassing' to Obama fox-news/us/us-regions/northeast/delaware fox-news/shows/hannity fox-news/politics/elections/presidential fox-news/politics/elections/democrats fox-news/politics/2020-presidential-election fox-news/person/joe-biden fox-news/person/barack-obama fox-news/media/fox-news-flash fox-news/entertainment/media fox news fnc/media fnc de746ce7-7be4-5d49-958f-92b2379828dd Charles Creitz article

Former Vice President Joe Biden’s gaffes during his Democratic presidential campaign must be frustrating for former President Barack Obama, according to Charlie Hurt.

In addition, Hurt said, a published report that Obama advised Biden in early 2019 that he did not have to seek the presidency in 2020 is not a positive development for Biden.

“This has been his shtick for 45 years in Washington,” Hurt said Friday on “Hannity,” referring to Biden’s gaffes. “That’s why he’s never managed to get the nomination for president. It’s why the closest he’s ever come to the White House was being handpicked by Barack Obama to be his vice president.”

OBAMA REPORTEDLY TOLD BIDEN HE DIDN’T HAVE TO RUN IN 2020

The Fox News contributor added that Biden has not been a great ambassador for the Obama presidency.

“Think about this for a minute: Think about how embarrassed Barack Obama must be to have this guy trying to go out there and uphold Obama’s legacy,” he said. “It’s got to be hugely embarrassing.”

Regarding the New York Times report about Obama’s assessment of Biden’s presidential aspirations, Hurt considered whether someone in the ex-president’s orbit spoke with the paper.

“Who leaked this stuff?” he asked. “The only people that could have leaked all this stuff to the New York Times was Barack Obama’s people. And, I mean — what a shiv in the back.”

Guest host Gregg Jarrett added Biden has been attacked in primary debates for his connection to some of Obama’s policies.

In the Times story, Obama reportedly told Biden, “You don’t have to do this Joe, you really don’t.”

Obama reportedly “took pains to cast his doubts about the campaign in personal terms.”

Speculation has swirled over the decision by Obama to so far refrain from endorsing Biden formally. Still, despite Obama’s early hesitation, he has taken a much more involved role in Biden’s campaign than in the efforts of other candidates, The Times reported.

Andrew McCarthy: This bogus story launched the ‘collusion’ probe

Westlake Legal Group AP19200763928882 Andrew McCarthy: This bogus story launched the 'collusion' probe National Review fox-news/person/robert-mueller fox-news/person/donald-trump fox-news/opinion fox-news/news-events/russia-investigation fnc/opinion fnc article Andrew McCarthy 523b56b9-c53b-5206-a81c-079946d756a0

Editor’s note: Andrew C. McCarthy’s new book is “Ball of Collusion: The Plot to Rig an Election and Destroy a Presidency.” This is the fourth in a series of excerpts; the first can be read here, the second here, and the third here.

The George Papadopoulos “Origin Story” has never added up. It has been portrayed as the Big Bang, the magic moment that started the FBI’s investigation of “collusion” — a suspected election-theft conspiracy between Donald Trump’s campaign and Russian President Vladimir Putin’s regime.

But if the young energy-sector analyst had actually emerged in early 2016 as the key to proving Trump-Russia espionage, you would think the FBI might have gotten around to interviewing him before Jan. 27, 2017 — i.e., a week after President Trump had been inaugurated, and six months after the bureau formally opened its “Crossfire Hurricane” probe.

You would probably also think Papadopoulos, Suspect One in The Great Cyber Espionage Attack on Our Democracy, might have rated a tad more than the whopping 14-day jail sentence a federal judge eventually imposed on him.

MUELLER’S REPORT ON INVESTIGATION: WHAT HAPPENED AFTER IT DROPPED?

More from Opinion

You might even suppose that he’d have been charged with some seditious felony involving clandestine operations against his own country, instead of … yes … fibbing to the FBI about the date of a meeting.

That, however, does not scratch the surface. We are to believe that what led to the opening of the FBI’s Trump-Russia investigation, and what therefore is the plinth of the collusion narrative, is a breakfast meeting at a London hotel on April 26, 2016, between Papadopoulos and Joseph Mifsud, a Maltese academic we are supposed to take for a clandestine Russian agent.

We are to take Papadopoulos’s word for it that Mifsud claimed Russia possessed “dirt” on Hillary Clinton in the form of “thousands” of “emails of Clinton.” We are further to believe that “the professor” elaborated that, in order to help Donald Trump’s candidacy, the Kremlin would release these “emails of Clinton” at a time chosen to do maximum damage to the Democratic nominee’s campaign.

The story is based on no credible evidence. If it were ever presented to a jury, it would be laughed out of court.

The Papadopoulos “collusion” claims (without collusion charges) are alleged in the report by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, which essentially repeats the grandiose “Statement of the Offense” that the special counsel included with the comparatively minor false-statement charge to which Papadopoulos pleaded guilty.

Carefully parsed, this narrative stops short of alleging that the Trump adviser actually collaborated with a Russian agent. Rather, it claims that Papadopoulos engaged in a lot of twaddle with Mifsud, who he had reason to suspect might be a Russian agent.

The pair brainstormed endlessly about potential high-level Trump-campaign meetings with the Putin regime, including [insert heavy breathing here] between Trump and Putin themselves. Papadopoulos then exaggerated these meanderings in emails to Trump-campaign superiors he was hot to impress.
