Britain, Italy make joint bid to host 2020 UN climate talks

Britain and Italy are making a joint bid to host the U.N.’s global climate summit next year.

The two countries said Tuesday they’re proposing that Britain host the annual U.N. talks in late 2020 and for Italy to stage a preparatory meeting.

They said their partnership would send “a strong signal of determined and informed cooperation on climate change.”

Turkey is also in the running to host the 26th Conference of the Parties, or COP26. Countries are expected to make a decision on the venue during technical talks taking place in Bonn, Germany, until June 27.

Chile is hosting this year’s U.N. summit after Brazil dropped out.

British Prime Minister Theresa May announced plans last week to eliminate the country’s net greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

German court: Breeders can keep killing male chicks for now

Westlake Legal Group og-fox-news German court: Breeders can keep killing male chicks for now fox-news/world/world-regions/europe fox-news/world fnc/world fnc ecd3df29-6950-59dc-8f0b-60352a93bb36 Berlin Associated Press article

A German federal court has ruled that hen breeders can continue to kill male chicks after they hatch, a practice that results in the death of some 45 million birds annually.

The Federal Administrative Court was ruling in a case involving a hatchery specialized in egg-laying hens that killed male chicks because they won’t lay eggs and the breed is unsuited to raising for meat. The hatchery was banned from doing so in 2013, but another court then reversed the ban.

The federal court said Thursday a company’s economic interests don’t constitute a “sensible reason” under animal protection laws for killing the birds. But it said techniques to determine chicks’ gender in the egg should soon be available and hatcheries shouldn’t be asked to change their practice twice.

UN atomic watchdog head urges dialogue with Iran

The head of the U.N. atomic watchdog is urging world powers to continue dialogue with Iran to keep it in the landmark 2015 deal aimed at preventing the country from building nuclear weapons.

In his regular update to the International Atomic Energy Agency’s board of governors on Monday, Yukiya Amano said he’s “worried about increasing tensions over the Iran nuclear issue,” adding it’s “essential that Iran fully implements its nuclear-related commitments.”

In its May report to member states, the IAEA said Iran has stayed within key limitations for uranium and heavy water stockpile, but said stockpiles were increasing.

The nuclear deal has been complicated by the unilateral withdrawal of the United States last year and Washington’s increased sanctions, which has been taking a toll on the Iranian economy.

Germany: leader of Merkel’s party warns as Greens surge

Westlake Legal Group ContentBroker_contentid-7970de640ad74147b5c65ef1bc8e4a68 Germany: leader of Merkel's party warns as Greens surge fox-news/world/world-regions/europe fox-news/world fnc/world fnc Berlin Associated Press article 27a3d905-5804-58c8-845f-c20ffff26d37

The leader of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s center-right party is warning that Germans risk ending up with a left-wing government if they vote for the Greens, who surged in last month’s European Parliament election and are now level with or ahead of Merkel’s Union bloc in several polls.

The Greens traditionally leaned left but in recent years have formed regional coalitions with Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union in several states. Last week, however, they rejected the chance to do so in Germany’s smallest state, Bremen, and opted for a coalition with the center-left Social Democrats and the hard-left Left Party.

CDU leader Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer told Sunday’s Bild am Sonntag newspaper that “people who dream of a new government and vote Green must know that they could wake up with the Left Party.”

German police say a man who was detained in an investigation of the fatal shooting of a regional official from Chancellor Angela Merkel’s party has been released after questioning.

Walter Luebcke, who was in charge of the Kassel area regional administration, was found outside his home last Sunday by a relative. An autopsy confirmed a pistol shot to the head, fired at close range, and a homicide investigation was opened.

On Saturday, a man was taken into provisional custody in the case. But news agency dpa reported Sunday that police said he was questioned and then let go. They didn’t give further details.

Luebcke in 2015 received threats after speaking out in support of helping asylum-seekers, but police have said those threats appear to have no connection to his death.

Federal prosecutors say a 32-year-old German woman faces terrorism charges for joining the Islamic State group in Syria.

Carla-Josephine S., whose last name wasn’t released for privacy reasons, is also charged with child endangerment resulting in death and other offenses, prosecutors said Friday.

She’s accused of taking her three children to Syria in 2015.

Prosecutors say she joined the Islamic State group and lived in one of their facilities.

Her children underwent IS ideological indoctrination, and her son took paramilitary training before he was killed in 2018 when their compound was bombed.

Unable to convince her husband to join her, S. in 2016 married an IS fighter from Somalia and took paramilitary training herself.

She was arrested upon her return to Germany in April. Prosecutors wouldn’t give any details about her daughters.

Leader of German Social Democrats resigns after vote fiasco

The leader of Germany’s center-left Social Democrats, a junior party in Chancellor Angela Merkel’s governing coalition, is resigning after an election debacle in the European Parliament vote.

Andrea Nahles said in a statement Sunday that she wanted “clarity” after questions were raised in recent weeks about her ability to lead the party, showing she lacked members’ support.

Nahles said she will be stepping down from her post as chairwoman of the Social Democrats and leader of its parliamentary faction, to ensure that her successors are found “in an orderly fashion.”

The Social Democrats fell to third place behind Merkel’s center-right Union bloc and the Greens in last month’s European Parliament election in Germany.

German police are looking for a rare 1980s Ferrari sports car believed to be worth more than 2 million euros ($2.2 million) after a man posing as a would-be buyer stole it during a test drive.

Police in Duesseldorf said the man answering an advertisement for the red Ferrari 288 GTO , first registered in 1985, turned up for a previously agreed appointment in the western German city on Monday.

He and the seller went on a test drive, during which the seller got out of the car to swap places with the would-be buyer. The man got into the driver’s seat, hit the gas pedal and sped off.

Police said Tuesday that they hadn’t been able to find the car and appealed to the public for information.
