A German teenager has gone on trial for the fatal strangling of another boy who allegedly refused his advances.

German news agency dpa reported that the trial opened on Thursday with the defendant’s lawyer reading a statement in which the 15-year-old acknowledged responsibility for the 16-year-old victim’s death.

Prosecutors accuse the teen of strangling the older but weaker boy after they agreed to meet in a wooded area last October.

The killing prompted widespread shock in Germany.

The teenager on trial hasn’t been named due to his age. He faces a prison sentence of up to 10 years if he is convicted of manslaughter. A verdict is expected in June.

Former Rwanda rebel group leader accused of war crimes dies

Westlake Legal Group og-fox-news Former Rwanda rebel group leader accused of war crimes dies fox-news/world/world-regions/europe fox-news/world/world-regions/africa fox-news/world fnc/world fnc Berlin Associated Press article 766a73d4-a8ad-56d3-ab4f-be3be7021f35

The former head of a Rwandan rebel group has died in Germany while awaiting retrial on war crimes charges, a court says.

Ignace Murwanashyaka, the former president of the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda, was convicted by a Stuttgart court in 2015 of leading a terrorist organization and four counts of being an accessory to war crimes in eastern Congo a decade ago. He was sentenced to 13 years imprisonment, but the verdict was overturned last year and a retrial was pending.

The Stuttgart court said on Wednesday that Murwanashyaka’s health deteriorated suddenly on April 11. He was transferred to a hospital, where he later died. The court declined to provide further details, citing patient confidentiality.

The FDLR’s vice president, Straton Musoni, was given an eight-year sentence for his role in the group. That verdict wasn’t overturned.

Murwanashyaka’s lawyers argued during the trial that he had merely been the group’s political figurehead and hadn’t controlled its military wing.

Prosecutors in Germany, where Murwanashyaka had lived since the 1980s, argued he had issued remotely instructions to FDLR members in Congo by phone, text message and email. The group carried out killings in the Congolese villages of Mianga, Busurungi, Chiriba and Manje in 2009.

The rebel group is made up mostly of Hutu refugees from Rwanda who took shelter in neighboring Congo after the 1994 genocide in which over 800,000 people were killed, most of them ethnic Tutsis but also moderate Hutus.

German comedian loses case against Merkel over Erdogan poem

A German comedian has lost a court case against Chancellor Angela Merkel’s description of a crude poem he wrote about Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as “deliberately hurtful.”

Amid tensions with Turkey over a TV satire poking fun at Erdogan, Jan Boehmermann read the poem on television in 2016 to illustrate something he said wouldn’t be allowed in Germany.

Merkel’s spokesman said she considered the poem “deliberately hurtful,” which Merkel later said was a mistake. Prosecutors dropped an investigation of Boehmermann for lack of evidence of any crime.

Berlin’s administrative court on Tuesday rejected Boehmermann’s bid to ban the government from repeating Merkel’s assessment, since it was clear that wouldn’t happen. It also found Merkel’s comments weren’t unlawful and didn’t constitute “prejudgement” of the case against Boehmermann.

A German government plane with no passengers on board is blocking the runway after a rough landing at one of Berlin’s airports, forcing authorities to divert incoming planes.

The German air force, which operates the government fleet, said the Bombardier Global 5000 jet landed at Schoenefeld airport on Tuesday after turning back because of a malfunction and both wings touched the runway. It said the crew was undergoing medical checks.

The city’s airport operator tweeted that flights headed for Schoenefeld were being diverted because of an “inoperative aircraft” on the runway.

The incident came during the busy Easter travel season. Schoenefeld is one of two Cold War-era airports that serve the German capital. A new airport is currently scheduled to open next year.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has congratulated Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on his re-election and stressed the need to work toward a two-state solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Merkel’s office said stressed in a phone conversation Monday the continued relevance of a two-state solution, which she said should be the goal of international efforts.

Merkel also expressed her willingness to work closely and trustingly with the incoming Israeli government.

During the final stretch of his election campaign, Netanyahu pledged for the first time to annex parts of the occupied West Bank in a desperate bid to rally his right-wing base. Netanyahu has reneged on election eve promises before, but should he follow through on this one, it would mark a dramatic development and potentially wipe out the already diminishing hope for Palestinian statehood.

Germany is pressing Venezuelan authorities to reverse a decision to take German international broadcaster Deutsche Welle’s Spanish-language channel off the air.

Deutsche Welle said Sunday that the channel had been pulled and urged Venezuelan broadcasting authority Conatel to return it to its cable network.

On Monday, German Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Adebahr said the Venezuelan decision was “very regrettable” and noted that freedom of the press and opinion “have a high value for this German government.”

Conatel did not make any public statement about why it had removed Deutsche Welle’s Spanish-language channel from its service.

Germany is one of the countries that have recognized opposition leader Juan Guaido as Venezuela’s interim president. Last month, the Venezuelan government ordered German ambassador Daniel Kriener to leave the country.

The number of foreigners living in Germany increased by 2.7% last year, a slower rate than in previous years although there was a marked increase in the number of non-European Union citizens with work permits.

The Federal Statistical Office said Monday that nearly 10.92 million people with only foreign citizenship were registered residents at the end of 2018 in Germany, a country of 83 million. That was up from 10.62 million in 2017.

Germany’s foreign population grew 11.7% in 2015 and 10.2% in 2016 amid an influx of migrants from conflicts in Syria, Iraq and elsewhere. It grew 5.8% in 2017.

The statistical office said some 266,000 non-EU citizens had work permits in Germany at the end of last year, up from 217,000 a year earlier.

Hundreds evacuated in Frankfurt so WWII bomb can be defused

Some 600 people have been evacuated from their homes in the old city of Frankfurt so specialists could remove a World War II-era bomb that was discovered in the Main River.

The German news agency dpa reported the bomb was defused, as planned, underwater on Sunday, which led to a loud detonation and a big water fountain on the river. Police told dpa “the bomb is no longer a danger.”

Firefighters had discovered the American 250-kilogram (550-pound) bomb during diving training in the river on Tuesday.

Even more than 70 years after the end of the war, bombs and other munitions still turn up regularly in Germany, a testament to the ferocity of the fighting in World War II.

German authorities have indicted a Sri Lankan man suspected of involvement in killing 15 captured government soldiers while fighting for the Tamil Tigers rebel group.

Federal prosecutors said Friday that 37-year-old Sivatheeban B. is accused of membership in a foreign terrorist organization, war crimes, two cases of manslaughter and 11 cases of attempted manslaughter.

The man, whose surname wasn’t released due to German privacy rules, was arrested in August.

Prosecutors allege that in 2008 the suspect guarded 15 captured soldiers as they were driven to a site where they were executed, and later helped burn their bodies. In a separate incident a year later, he fired on 13 soldiers, two of whom died.

The rebel group, which fought for a separate state for ethnic minority Tamils, was defeated in 2009.

Chancellor Angela Merkel’s office says the German leader’s mother, Herlind Kasner, has died. She was 90.

Merkel’s office confirmed the death in a short statement Thursday and asked that the “privacy of the chancellor and her family” be respected.

According to German media reports, Kasner, who lived in the town of Templin, about 75 kilometers (50 miles) north of Berlin, died earlier this month.

Merkel was known to be close to her mother, who was present in parliament when Merkel was sworn in for her fourth term last year. The chancellor, who rarely comments on her private life, has made no public comment on her death.

Kasner was a retired English and Latin teacher in Templin, where Merkel’s father, who died in 2011, was a protestant minister.
