Beto refuses to apologize for using the ‘N’ word, doubles down on screed

Westlake Legal Group BetoDebate Beto refuses to apologize for using the ‘N’ word, doubles down on screed Wolf Blitzer The Blog Rev. Al Sharpton President Trump PoliticsNation Nazis nationalism MSNBC Joseph Goebbels impeachment CNN Beto O'Rourke 2020 election 2020 Democrat candidates

No, not that ‘N’ word – the other one. Robert Francis O’Rourke has gone so over the cliff in his leftist-speak that even Al Sharpton and Wolf Blitzer are trying to toss him a lifeline back to reality. Case in point – in interviews a mere day apart, O’Rourke referred to President Trump and his administration as Nazis. That’s not a particularly original thought emanating from the left these days but O’Rourke even brought Goebbels into the conversation.

In today’s Trump deranged world, standard references to Hitler are not enough when talking about the Republican president or his administration. Remember when the left popularized Hitler references during the George W. Bush administration? Back then it was Bushitler. Trump’s name isn’t so easy to work with so the incendiary remarks spring forward.

O’Rourke hasn’t been able to top the attention he received after the mass shooting in El Paso and his decision to make gun-grabbing legislation his campaign’s main theme. Now he just swings for the fences and hopes someone will book him on cable television. One show that took the bait was Rev. Al Sharpton’s Sunday show. During his interview on MSNBC’s PoliticsNation, O’Rourke included the name of Adolph Hitler’s propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels in his criticism of President Trump.

“President Trump, perhaps inspired by Goebbels and the propagandists of the Third Reich, seems to employ this tactic that the bigger the lie, the more obscene the injustice, the more dizzying the pace of this bizarre behavior, the less likely we are to be able to do something about it,” he said.

“I’m so grateful that not only is the House moving forward with impeachment, but… It’s a good sign that he was caught, that he was stopped — that he can no longer normalize the behavior that we’ve seen so far.”

The King of Race Baiters and anti-Semitic Sharpton was surprised by O’Rourke’s rhetoric. Rev. Al asked for clarification. “Did I hear you correctly say that perhaps Trump was influenced by Goebbels and the Third Reich in terms of telling a big lie? I just want to make sure that’s what I heard you say.”

I’ll note the irony in O’Rourke claiming that President Trump is “normalizing” some type of behavior. That is exactly what the left has done against Republicans and conservatives. They have normalized using words like “Nazi” against them. The left always accuses the right of actions they are taking.

So, that was Sunday. On Monday, while giving an interview to CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer, O’Rourke forged on. He defended his use of the ‘N’ word. It’s really all about the Muslims, or maybe Mexicans, or something.

CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer asked O’Rourke if he was going too far in comparing Trump to the Nazis. But O’Rourke didn’t back down.

“Find me a better analogy of another leader of a Western democracy describing all people of one religion as inherently defective or disqualified or dangerous,” O’Rourke said. “That’s what the president has done when it comes to Muslims.”

O’Rourke continued on with more past comments of the president.

“Repeating the lie that Mexican immigrants pose violent risk to this country,” O’Rourke added. “Asking four women of color elected by their constituents to Congress to go back to their home country. And having an almost Nuremberg-like rally where people are chanting ‘Send her back’ or inviting the kind of violence based on the racism that he’s inspired where you have another crowd cheering when someone says ‘shoot them’ when the president says what do we do about these immigrants.”

Oh, did you catch that little nugget in that screed? Those Trump rallies that include chanting like “Send her back” are “Nuremberg-like” rallies and incite violence. Orange Man bad and so are his Deplorables. They are just like Nazis.

Blitzer asked if O’Rourke understands the impact such language will have on people and how offensive it is for him to insert words like Holocaust and Nazis in a political conversation. “Most people say that is unacceptable,” Blitzer said. Alas, Beto doesn’t care about any of that. He simply has to make such comparisons, as it’s his last resort, you see. And it is “where we are.” He told Blitzer that the country is descending into “open racism, intolerance and violence led by the president.” Also, yes, Trump is a Russian asset. “He’s working in the interests of Russia and defying the interests of the United States,” O’Rourke said. The man left no stone unturned, right?

Robert Francis O’Rourke has not qualified for the November debate yet. He told Blitzer that he’ll stay in the race whether he makes it to the debate stage or not. Raising money isn’t his problem (who are these people, anyway?), it’s his poor polling. He has failed to hit 3 percent in at least four recognized polls. Beto’s campaign sent out an email Sunday sounding the alarm that “millions of people” may not get to hear his message. Thank heavens for small blessings is what I say to that.

I don’t think O’Rourke should count on any of this latest nonsense to raise his numbers in the polls. It can’t come soon enough for when we’ll be able to say, “Adios, Beto.”

Bernie Sanders: It’s “outrageous” that certain people would accuse Tulsi Gabbard of being a foreign asset

Westlake Legal Group hc Bernie Sanders: It’s “outrageous” that certain people would accuse Tulsi Gabbard of being a foreign asset tulsi gabbard Trump The Blog russian progressive primary Hillary Clinton democratic Beto O'Rourke Bernie Sanders asset

There’s little downside to Bernie in reviving his 2016 battle with Hillary at this point, even if it means coming to the defense of another candidate. Gabbard herself understands how a war with Clinton might help galvanize progressive voters, which is why she tweeted on Friday at Clinton that “It’s now clear that this primary is between you and me.” Lefties hate Hillary for a million reasons — too corporate, too hawkish, too corrupt, and not even a winner when it mattered most. She was just strong enough to snuff out progressive populists’ dream of winning the White House in 2016 but not strong enough to do the same to right-wing populists. Go figure that Gabbard would try to harness their contempt for Clinton to jumpstart her campaign.

And go figure that Bernie, who’d be in trouble if Gabbard started getting traction among progressives, would jump in to try to leverage some of that Hillary hatred before Gabbard claims it all for herself.

I wonder if Sanders would have been as quick to piss off Clinton supporters here if he was atop the field in polling, with a stranglehold on lefty voters. In that case his mind would be on appeasing the centrist Dems whom he needed to win over. As it is, with Warren sapping him of votes he needs and Gabbard now making noise, he needs to protect his left flank first.

A Twitter pal responds: “thanks, guy who honeymooned in the soviet union at the peak of the cold war.”

Hillary has yet to comment on the backlash to her calling Gabbard a “Russian asset,” but I assume she’ll try to weasel out of it by insisting that an asset and an agent are two different things. An agent, she’ll say, is someone who works for a foreign government. An asset is someone whose worldview incidentally serves the interests of a foreign government — a useful idiot, in other words. That’s not what “asset” means in spycraft, of course, and Hillary certainly knows that, but that’s what she’ll claim in order to back away from her defamatory insistence that Gabbard is working for the Russians.

Which reminds me of how Dan Foster framed the blossoming Tulsi/Hillary war — as a conflict between a useful idiot and a more traditional idiot. I’d add that it’s an intriguing match-up between someone whose approach to Syria is conventionally terrible and someone whose approach is unconventionally terrible.

Tom Nichols worries that by elevating Gabbard Clinton has given her a stature that Tulsi might eventually use to divide Democrats, be it as a third-party candidate or by fighting on to the convention with her current campaign. The liberal fear is that Gabbard isn’t so much an asset of the Russians as an asset of Trump and the populist right: She sometimes seems to have more fans among the Fox News demographic, Tucker Carlson foremost among them, than she does in the Democratic Party, where she’s been stuck at two percent or so for months. The plot, supposedly, is for Gabbard to aid Trump by declaring the eventual Dem nominee a tool of warmongers and Wall Street and to demoralize Democratic voters with her criticism, possibly even as a Green Party candidate. Ironically, that’s what Hillary was worried about in her comments last week — that Gabbard would end up playing the Jill Stein role in 2020. Nichols’s point is that, doubly ironically, Clinton may have made that more likely by raising Gabbard’s profile with her paranoid “Russian asset” critique.

I don’t think Gabbard is in cahoots with Trump or anyone else. But I’ll give you a third irony: By raising the prospect of Gabbard as mischief-maker who ends up undermining the Democratic nominee, Hillary may be making the case for a more left-wing nominee than a Clinton-style centrist. Nominate Joe Biden and Tulsi’s warmonger/Wall Street attacks — if they happen — really might resonate with disgruntled progressives. Nominate Elizabeth Warren and those attacks are less persuasive. I think lefties will be looking for reasons to suck it up and support the nominee this time in the interest of ousting Trump so long as they get someone at the top who seems sympathetic to them. Not so sure Biden will hack it for them, but Warren certainly would. There just won’t be as much political space for a Stein type in 2020 with progressives spoiling to beat their orange nemesis and undo their mistake of 2016.

Two clips for you here, one of Beto O’Rourke riding to Gabbard’s rescue by claiming that Trump is the real Russian asset and one of the “View” crew largely siding with Hillary (of course) in her critique of Gabbard. Beto too probably recognizes that, as a left-wing Democratic politician circa 2019, you can’t go wrong taking sides against Hillary Clinton.

Beto O’Rourke Told a Room Full of Democrats That You – Yes You – Are a Racist

Democratic 2020 candidate Robert “Beto” O’Rourke is so woke that he’s officially become the wokest candidate among the pack. What’s more, he can’t wait to show you how woke he is.

While addressing the Alabama Democratic Conference’s semi-annual convention in Birmingham, Alabama, O’Rourke showed you just how racist he’s not by pointing out that everyone in America is a racist country because it’s racist at its foundations.

Bold strategy, Cotton.

“Despite my obvious pride in the role my community played in the civil rights history of America, despite what I think we represent to this country and the rest of the world — about the genius of America being able to integrate people who come from everywhere and call this country home…this country, though we may not be in El Paso, Texas, is still racist at its foundation, at its core, and throughout history,” said O’Rourke.

His calling this country “racist” naturally received applause from the Democrat attendees.

It’s odd to me that we still hear this kind of rhetoric from Democrats who currently govern a country where they elect minorities on both sides of the aisle. Democrats who live in a country where we just recently had a black president. Where we have celebrities, athletes, and business owners of every shade of skin color and ethnic background.

The institutional racism O’Rourke is mentioning here is nonexistent. A country that is racist at its core wouldn’t allow for any of the above. While it’s clear that many minority communities have their struggles, blaming it on some nebulous spirit of racism is like saying it rains because it does. The social justice left that O’Rourke belongs to would rather commit to the narrative that bad things happen to minorities because of racism, and not really look at the underlying causes as to why.

But the most insulting part is that in order for a country to be racist, there have to be practicers of racism. According to O’Rourke, that’s you. You’re racist. Maybe you don’t think you are, or maybe you don’t mean to be, but O’Rourke and woke Democrats like him are here to tell you that you’re just the worst.

In short, he thinks you’re horrible and that the only way to fix you is to give him power over you.

Police Continue to Bash Beto Over His Promise to Send Authorities to the Homes of Gun Owners

Failed Democratic Texas Senate candidate and failing Democratic 2020 candidate Robert “Beto” O’Rourke made some promises on behalf of America’s law enforcement that America’s law enforcement isn’t happy about, and they’re speaking out about it.

Recently, O’Rourke went on MSNBC and told Joe Scarborough of “Morning Joe” that if he became president and by some dark miracle managed to make AR-15s illegal, he would institute a mandatory buyback. Should you as a gun owner not participate in that buyback, then O’Rourke said he would send law enforcement to pay you a visit.

As I reported, Sheriff’s departments from across the nation began speaking up and letting O’Rourke know that his threat wasn’t only not going to happen due to its unconstitutionality, it’s absolutely foolish in that it could result in the deaths of both civilians and officers. They lambasted O’Rourke for being so flippant about putting lives at risk.

(READ: Sheriffs Send Beto To The Burn Ward Over His Threat To Send Law Enforcement To Gun Owner’s Homes)

Apparently, the bashing from law enforcement is continuing, but now it involves the largest police union in the nation.

According to the Washington Free Beacon’s Stephen Gutowski, the National Fraternal Order of Police not only stated that his threat was unconstitutional but rubbed salt in the wound by stating that O’Rourke is likely to never be elected:

“Mr. O’Rourke may not be aware that state and local police officers (who comprise more than 90% of all police in the U.S.) receive their orders from their local jurisdictions – not from the Federal government,” Jim Pasco, executive director of the FOP, wrote in an email to the Free Beacon. “Further, any such legislation, if it passed, would no doubt be vigorously litigated with a view to its apparent inconsistency with the Second Amendment.”

“In view of the foregoing, and in view of Mr. O’Rourke’s current standing in the polls, we do not view this as an issue we will have to grapple within the foreseeable future,” he added.

It doesn’t stop there. Gutowski also reported that Sheriff AJ Louderback of Jackson County, Texas, warned that officers would mutiny en masse should a politician try to implement a threat like that into action, and flat out stated his refusal to participate in such an action should he be ordered to:

“I think he’s seriously misjudging the law enforcement response to what he wants to do,” Louderback told the Free Beacon. “Many sheriffs would not comply with his plan.”

Louderback sits on the immigration and government affairs committees of the National Sheriffs’ Association, which represents over 3,000 sheriffs across the country. He described O’Rourke’s plan as unworkable and counterproductive.

“This guy’s plan is ridiculous,” he said. “Everyone is looking for solutions to violent crime but this isn’t one of them. I’m not going to harass my citizens for owning guns.”

The National Association of Police Organizations, which represents a massive number of officers, also verbally slapped O’Rourke for his threat:

“It’s ironic that Beto O’Rourke, who was slamming police as ‘the new Jim Crow’ just a year ago, now finds a need for police when he wants to disarm individuals,” Bill Johnson, executive director of the group, told the Free Beacon. “Maybe poor Beto should spend less time live-streaming his visits to the dentist and attend a basics civics class instead. He’d be reminded that the very first law every police officer swears to uphold is the Constitution.”

The number of officers refusing to do comply with Democrat’s “door to door” promise of gun confiscation should tip off the left to what kind of country they’re trying to disarm. When even law enforcement officials at the very top of offices and unions are openly revolting against you before you’re in a position to be revolted against, you’re not going to have a good time getting your authoritarianism into action.

While on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, Democratic 2020 candidate and wannabe tyrant Robert “Beto” O’Rourke made it clear that in an America where he’s president, he will send law enforcement to the homes of people who choose not to participate in the mandatory buyback program and take their gun by force.

O’Rourke told “Morning Joe” host Joe Scarborough that in the instance of a gun owner keeping his AR-15 to himself, then he can count on a visit by someone with a badge and a gun.

“In that case, I think there would be a visit by law enforcement to recover that firearm and to make sure that it is purchased — bought back — so that it cannot be potentially used against somebody else,” said O’Rourke.

(READ: Beto Clowns Himself Explaining How He’ll Punish “Buyback” Reluctant Gun Owners With “Consequences”)

It would appear that law enforcement has some things to say about that, and O’Rourke may not like what they have to say.

In fact, according to Townhall, San Juan County Sheriff Shane Ferrari said if O’Rourke thinks law enforcement is going to cooperate with “President O’Rourke” to strip the people of their legally owned firearms, he’s “delusional.”

“Mr. O’Rourke is delusional in regards to his gun control ideas,” Ferrari told Townhall.

“The biggest fear of any free society is the government at your door wanting to take away your rights by force. I do not see the men and women of law enforcement sworn to uphold the U.S. Constitution doing this,” Ferrari continued.”In an act of desperation, Mr. O’Rourke is shamefully using tragedies our country has experienced and fear for his political gain. The very foundation of law enforcement is public trust. Frankly, no one should trust a man who talks out of both sides of his mouth.”

Eddy County Sheriff Mark Cage also made it clear that O’Rourke is out of bounds.

“I’m not sure whether his statements are naive or just plain ignorant and arrogant. Maybe it’s all three,” said Cage. “The thought of anyone utilizing my sheriff’s office or any other law enforcement agency in this country as their personal Gestapo to go door to door violating citizen’s rights is disgusting, unrealistic and downright un-American.”

Cage noted to Townhall that “bloodshed would be inevitable,” and added that “some of my constituents are already adopting the mantra of ‘Come take mine Beto!’…His rhetoric has gotten old and I look forward to the day when he shuts up.”

Weld County Sheriff Steve Reams questioned the constitutionality of O’Rourke’s threat and noted that the entire situation puts both his officers and the citizen in harm’s way.

“I think that you have to be concerned for the safety of the citizen [too] because, at that point, they don’t know if law enforcement is coming to protect them or disarm them and that creates a very tense situation,” Reams told Townhall.

Reams is more or less correct. More than just a few Americans will be hiding their rifles from the government if ever there should be a law passed that bans them. The proof that Americans are okay with this lies in the fact that the purchase of firearms, including AR-15’s, skyrockets whenever the threat of a ban even so much as peaks its head out.

In order to confiscate so many guns, O’Rourke would have to send law enforcement from home to home to search it. Seeing as how you need a warrant for that, just going to search that many homes would be a very long and arduous task, not to mention a dangerous one for everyone involved.

If O’Rourke wants to truly make sure all the guns are confiscated, he’d have to eliminate the Fourth Amendment, which will likely never happen. So calling him “delusional” is more than just a jab, it’s likely an accurate descriptor.

Not to mention that while O’Rourke would sit safely in the White House, law enforcement officers and civilians would be putting each other’s lives at risk in order to defend freedoms. So not only is he delusional, he’s foolish in thinking that this will stop the violence. It will only create more.

Trump rally scare: Armed man in body armor taken away by Dallas police

Westlake Legal Group Trump-rally Trump rally scare: Armed man in body armor taken away by Dallas police tom arnold The Blog President Trump dallas campaign rally Beto O'Rourke 2020 campaign

Thursday night President Trump held a campaign rally at the American Airlines Center in Dallas. The center was packed and it is reported that thousands of people were still outside hoping to get inside when the rally began. Also outside was a group of about 100 protesters angry about the troop pull-out in Syria.

It was all fun and games until the armed man wearing body armor and a backpack headed toward the protesters. Dallas police moved in and arrested him, reportedly confiscating a pistol, gas mask, knee pads, mace, and a video camera. The youngish-looking man wearing an Incel Wars t-shirt was taken to a hospital for observation:

Dallas police confirmed that the man has a license to carry the weapon.

Is the man a Trump supporter who was angry with the protesters? Is he someone who wishes harm to President Trump? It isn’t clear as I write this Friday morning. His name hasn’t been released. The Oath Keepers, a militia group, pledged to provide security for the rally against potential Antifa rioters. A D-List Hollywood celebrity posted a tweet that was taken down as a violation of Twitter policy.

This comes on the heels of angry Democrats expressing death wishes on President Trump this week including CNN employee caught on camera and Tom Arnold hinting at assassination on Twitter.

Don’t get too cocky traitor. They showed up for JFK too.

— Tom Arnold (@TomArnold) October 18, 2019

Not too far away, Beto O’Rourke held his own rally, with a crowd reported to have been about 5,500 people. Trump had a few words to say about Robert Francis O’Rourke:

A massive crowd of approximately 30,000 gathered outside the American Airlines Center to watch the speech on a large screen, as the president launched into an extended critique of 2020 Democratic presidential candidates. He derided former Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke as “very dumb” for pushing to confiscate guns and tax religious institutions, and remarked that Joe Biden’s family overtly profited from his political career.

“Last week, a very dumb Democrat candidate for president — that’s the end of him in this state — pledged to revoke the tax-exempt status of many churches and religious charities,” Trump said, as boos rocked the arena. “And by the way, that was after, a few weeks ago, he said, ‘Excuse me, we’re gonna take your guns away.’ … The flailer. You remember he was flailing all over the place?”

As Trump railed against corrupt Democrats and Speaker Pelosi, he told the crowd that he will win re-election in a landslide. “It’s going to be a landslide,” he said. “We have to make it a landslide.”

Nay-sayers may scoff at that line, but he may be right. This week an article by Moody’s Analytics predicts that Trump will easily win re-election and could surpass his electoral college victory from 2016. There is one catch – the economy has to stay as strong as it is right now. Moody’s Analytics used three different economic models to gauge the 2020 election.

Barring anything unusual happening, the president’s Electoral College victory could easily surpass his 2016 win over Democrat Hillary Clinton, which came by a 304-227 count.

Moody’s based its projections on how consumers feel about their own financial situation, the gains the stock market has achieved during Trump’s tenure and the prospects for unemployment, which has fallen to a 50-year low. Should those variables hold up, the president looks set to get another four-year term.

Moody’s has only been wrong once in its predictions since 1980 – the 2016 election. This fact gives me pause about the mention that Trump could “cruise” to victory. After Trump’s success in the 2016 election, nothing has been traditional in election results. At this point I think Trump’s chance at success in the 2020 race looks good but I don’t know about trouncing his competition, whomever it turns out to be. The Democrat field, so far, sure doesn’t look up to the task of winning a national election. Americans vote with their pocketbooks, and thus Moody’s prediction that Trump is in a really good spot rings true, within today’s economic conditions. The only hope for Democrats is a really strong voter turn-out.

Three models show Trump getting at least 289 electoral votes, assuming average turnout. His chances decrease with maximum turnout on the Democratic side and increase with minimum turnout expected.

Of the three models, he does best under the “pocketbook” measure of how people feel about their finances. In that scenario, assuming average nonincumbent turnout, he gets 351 electoral votes to the generic Democrat’s 187. “Record turnout is vital to a Democratic victory,” the report said.

In the stock market model, Trump gets a 289-249 edge, while the unemployment model shows a 332-206 advantage. Across all three models, Trump wins 324-214.

“Our ‘pocket¬book’ model is the most economically driven of the three. If voters were to vote primarily on the basis of their pocketbooks, the president would steamroll the competition,” the report said. “This shows the importance that prevailing economic sentiment at the household level could hold in the next election.”

Trump’s opponents like to point to his low-ish favorability rating as proof that he’ll lose re-election. Mark Zandi at Moody’s, though, thinks that Trump’s consistency is the key. His favorability doesn’t dip much or rise erratically, it just remains steady around 40%. With voter turn-out the key, the election may revolve around a few key counties in Pennsylvania. Trump flipped them in 2016 after a record of voting Democrat in the previous five elections.

Specifically, he said Luzerne County, in the northeast part of the state, “is the single-most important county, no kidding, in the entire election.” The longtime Democratic stronghold favored Trump, 51.8% to 46.8% in the election.

Trump doesn’t even have to win the county, but merely needs a strong turnout, Zandi said

So far, Trump supporters should feel pretty good about his chance of re-election. Maintaining his economic successes is the key, as is keeping his supporters fired up and ready to go vote.

On Wednesday’s episode of The View, Meghan McCain gave quite the negative review of 2020 Democratic candidates’ performance during Tuesday’s debate.

And one of those was good ol’ Elizabeth Warren, who — to the blonde fireball — didn’t do a good ‘ol job:

“I have many things to say. I was live-tweeting it because there’s only so much time in these segments. I will say — I thought Warren did a terrible job, and she was on her heels all night. And it showed just how horrible she actually is.”

Meghan also managed to call co-host Sunny Hostin a far-leftist (a characterization which which she disagreed), in response to her comment, “Did we watch the same debate?”

“I’m watching it as a Republican, and you’re saying that as a far left progressive. Mayor Pete came out swinging really hard, and I thought it was quite impressive.”

Is Meghan still a Republican? Her family’d decided back in April to endorse Biden (here).

GOP’er Abby Huntsman was impressed by Pete, too:

“I give mayor Pete, and Amy Klobuchar kudos. Mayor Pete, who I have liked from the beginning, but last night was his best performance yet. Biden also, but he delivers what Biden is saying I think so much better.”

Meghan’s comments on everyone’s favorite hunting rifle thief — Beto O’Rourke — were completely dismissive, but also, she had a really good idea.

As I covered Tuesday, Beto recently announced he’ll be exiting the political realm for good if he doesn’t snag the nomination (here).

That might not be a bad idea, since he’s seemed bent on saying things that make him wholly unelectable.

And when your campaign looks like this…

And holy heck, this:

…you might wanna broaden your options.

Therefore…Meghan with the win:

“I don’t know what Beto was doing other than running for MSNBC host. Coming up, I’m sure he’ll get a good hour.”

Perfecto!

Beto: Yes, in case it isn’t perfectly clear, I’ll be sending cops to your door to take your guns

In case there was any doubt about the “consequences” for noncompliance that he had in mind last night at the debate, this clip should resolve them.

Gotta give the guy credit: Somehow he found a gun-control position so radical that other Democrats were forced to tell him “dude, no” on national television.

Did he really not foresee when he endorsed a mandatory gun buyback that he would be asked endlessly about implementation? He looks constipated here admitting that, yes, of course police intervention might be required in some cases. It’s called a “mandatory” buyback for a reason. What’s the alternative, “Turn in your guns if you feel like it?” A law is only as good as its enforcement.

I can’t tell if this is the same position he held last month or a new one. In September, when he first went all-in on gun confiscation, he assured skeptics that police wouldn’t go door to door confiscating guns. Instead, it seemed, assault weapons would be treated like other forms of contraband, e.g., drugs. The cops won’t randomly show up to your door asking about it, but if they happen to find contraband in your possession while they’re there on other business, you’re in trouble. Listening to O’Rourke now, it sounds like he does imagine the police being sent out in some cases, at least, for the express purpose of confiscating weapons.

Which isn’t really a surprise. Beto’s views on gun rights have been evolving at light speed since he was a Senate candidate in Texas.

It’s interesting to watch the skepticism he’s getting even from Democratic-friendly media over his gun proposal. It’s not just Scarborough. Check out the pushback he got from Alisyn Camerota of CNN this morning:

There’s no upside, only downside, for liberals at this point in O’Rourke’s quixotic attempt to gain traction in the primary by venting the progressive id. Grab the guns, tax the churches, tear down the border wall — the media no doubt sees value in these ideas, but they also recognize how poisonous they might be in a general election. It’d be one thing if O’Rourke had caught fire among Democratic voters and now needed media protection from Republican attacks as the presumptive nominee, but not only is he going nowhere electorally, he’s handing the GOP ammo against Elizabeth Warren or whoever else happens to end up facing Trump. He’s so far out in left field that opportunists like Pete Buttigieg are now using O’Rourke’s radicalism as a foil to reposition themselves as moderate pragmatists for the benefit of Joe Biden’s voters:

What is this guy’s long-term game plan? His presidential bid has failed and he’s so tainted by outlandish radicalism like “seize the guns” that the nominee won’t even want him as a prominent surrogate next year. Having him around on the trail will make it too easy for Trump to tar him/her by association. If he goes back to Texas, he’s finished for the foreseeable future as being too left-wing for what’s still a semi-solidly red state. Is he trying to establish himself as the most true-blue progressive culture warrior in the field ahead of a 2024 presidential run, believing that the party will have caught up to him by then? Or is this exactly what it looks like — a desperate candidate who made a high-risk bet that radicalism would generate momentum for him, and who’s now left with nowhere to go upon realizing that it hasn’t?

About the only thing I looked forward to seeing Tuesday night at the fourth Democratic debate was the scrap between Beto O’Rourke and South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg.

Beto and Mayor Pete have been needling each other for weeks on the issue of gun control, and specifically O’Rourke’s mandatory gun confiscation plan. Mayor Pete has referred to Beto’s plan as an unattainable “shiny object.” Because of that, O’Rourke has countered that the Mayor, who served in Afghanistan, was “afraid of doing the right thing right now” because he was supposedly more interested in focus groups, consultants, and polls than saving lives.

CNN’s Anderson Cooper, one of last night’s debate moderators, teed up the tense exchange between the two by first asking Beto about how he planned on implementing his plan. After Beto gave a non-committal answer as to what he would do, Cooper then turned to Mayor Pete for his thoughts:

COOPER: Thank you. Mayor Buttigieg, just yesterday, you referred to mandatory buybacks as confiscation and said that Congressman O’Rourke has been picking a fight to try to stay relevant. Your response on guns?

BUTTIGIEG: Look, Congressman, you just made it clear that you don’t know how this is actually going to take weapons off the streets. If you can develop the plan further, I think we can have a debate about it. But we can’t wait. People are dying in the streets right now.

Beto responded by emphatically stating that we can’t wait on gun confiscation, the time is now, and we need to do the right thing, etc. etc. He also added the below comments, which was another swipe at Buttigieg’s courage regarding taking what Democrats would characterize as bold action on gun control:

O’ROURKE: No, let’s decide what we are going to believe in, what we’re going to achieve. And then let’s bring this country together in order to do that. Listening to my fellow Americans, to those moms who demand action, to those students who march for our lives, who, in fact, came up with this extraordinary bold peace plan… that calls for mandatory buybacks, let’s follow their inspiration and lead and not be limited by the polls and the consultants and the focus groups. Let’s do what’s right…”

Buttigieg at long last let him have it:

BUTTIGIEG: The problem isn’t the polls. The problems is the policy. And I don’t need lessons from you on courage, political or personal. Everyone on this stage is determined to get something done. Everyone on this stage recognizes, or at least I thought we did, that the problem is not other Democrats who don’t agree with your particular idea of how to handle this.

Watch:

I’ve said before that I’d be content with them both destroying each other at future campaign stops and debates because they are both pompous, sanctimonious hypocrites on a number of fronts, but Beto really did have that coming to him.

Beto’s “other consequences” for those who don’t surrender guns

Westlake Legal Group BetoDebate Beto’s “other consequences” for those who don’t surrender guns The Blog gun control gun confiscation consequences Beto O'Rourke assault weapons 2020 Democrat debates

One of the more interesting moments during last night’s debate came up while Beto O’Rourke and Pete Buttigieg were scuffling with each other over who had the better gun-grabbing policy. Anderson Cooper pressed O’Rourke for more details, asking what he planned to do if people simply refused to participate in a mandatory “buyback” program. (A gentle reminder that you can’t “buy back” something you didn’t sell in the first place.) Beto insisted that this would work, suggesting there would be “other consequences” for those who don’t comply. (Free Beacon)

Democratic presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke promised “other consequences” for Americans who choose not to turn in their firearms under his gun confiscation plan.

O’Rourke was pressed by CNN debate moderator Anderson Cooper on how he planned to “take away weapons from people who do not want to give them up.” He hinted at “other consequences” for individuals unwilling to voluntarily turn their weapons in

“If someone does not turn in an AR-15, or an AK-47, one of these weapons of war, or brings it out in public and brandishes it in an attempt to intimidate—as we saw in Kent State recently—then that weapon will be taken from them,” Beto said. “If they persist, there will be other consequences from law enforcement.”

Here’s the video in case you missed the show.

It’s difficult to imagine what the “other consequences” are aside from having police or sheriff’s deputies show up at your house and forcibly remove the firearms. And that’s not a job that any of our law enforcement officers are going to be looking forward to. Sure, most law-abiding people are going to wind up complying, but there’s always the chance that you’ll be heading to the home of somebody with a “come and get ’em” attitude and things could turn ugly quickly.

Less drastic options could include threatening to revoke the permits of people not in compliance. But yet again you wind up turning people who haven’t been accused of committing any crime into criminals and treating them as such.

Gun confiscation is a losing proposition politically and even a majority of the candidates on the stage aren’t willing to go that far. Even if I were a supporter of a ban on so-called “assault weapons” it’s easy to see the more rational, if slower route to achieving the Democrats’ objectives. If you ban the manufacture and sale of that class of firearms but grandfather all of the ones currently in legal circulation, the majority of them will eventually fall out of circulation through attrition. Yes, it would likely take several generations, but it would happen eventually.

But that won’t satisfy the rabid gun-grabbers in this political circus, however. They need immediate action. So we’re likely to continue hearing bizarre plans like these all the way through the primary. Next November we’ll find out how the voters feel about it after the Democratic platform gets pushed so far to the left that it’s ready to fall off a cliff.
