Tlaib calls for boycott of Maher’s show, he calls BDS “bulls**t” purity test

Westlake Legal Group BillMaher2 Tlaib calls for boycott of Maher’s show, he calls BDS “bulls**t” purity test The Blog real time with bill maher rashida tlaib HBO boycott Bill Maher bds

The fall-out continues from Bill Maher’s HBO show this weekend. Yesterday I wrote about an opinion he expressed during Friday’s Real Time with Bill Maher – a recession would be worth it to get rid of President Trump in 2020. That idea put into a discussion with his panel of guests was deeply disturbing as it showed Maher’s willingness to wish harm to Americans to satisfy his political hopes.

What I didn’t write about was Maher’s plea to Democrats to not use the BDS movement as a purity test for candidates. He called it a “bulls**t purity test”. Supporters of the BDS movement, like Reps. Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar were singled out by Maher as they are the most vocal lawmakers on the subject. Maher also criticized the media for the lack of historical reference in their reporting. He is absolutely correct when he says that supporters of Palestine act as though the Palestinean territory just woke up one day under what they call occupation for no reason at all. The history of Israel and Palestine is never explained. Nor is the fact that BDS supporters do not think that Israel has a right to exist. Maher said the left supports BDS to be woke but “actually slept through history class.”

“It’s predicated on this notion — it’s very shallow thinking — that the Jews are, in Israel, mostly white and the Palestinians are brown. So they must be innocent and correct, and the Jews must be wrong. As if the occupation came right out of the blue, that this completely peaceful people found themselves occupied,” he said.

Even the Never-Trumpers on Maher’s panel agreed with Maher. Most Democrats in the House agree with Maher, too. In July the House passed a resolution opposing the BDS movement. Sixteen Democrats voted against the resolution. Those sixteen are in the minority in their party on this issue. The vote was 398-17. Tlaib and Omar voted against it.

Tlaib, citing her family’s Palestinian roots, said in opposing the bill that she couldn’t “stand by and watch this attack on our freedom of speech and the right to boycott the racist policies of the government in the state of Israel.”

Perhaps neither Tlaib nor Omar knew that Israeli law prohibits those who support international calls to boycott Israel from entering the country, or maybe they did know. It really doesn’t matter. The fact is that both are provocateurs who had an agenda to push. They didn’t plan to go to learn or find common ground, they want to spread Palestinean propaganda, especially on Israeli soil. As Maher correctly asked, is it a surprise that a visit from them wasn’t welcomed once their intentions became known?

Tlaib now calls for a boycott of Maher’s show. She’s all about freedom and equality as long as it isn’t for Israel, you know. She is unable to demonstrate a desire for a sane conversation, however, and leaps to conflating Israel’s policies to that of South Africa’s. This is why she and her ilk must never be taken seriously on making policy in foreign affairs.

How’s Tlaib’s grandmother doing, you may ask? She seems to be fine but now she’s weighing in on wishing him retaliation from God.

Muftia Tlaib, the 99-year-old grandmother of Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., had some strong words for President Trump after he claimed the elder Tlaib was a “winner” because her granddaughter decided not to visit her in Israel.

“Trump tells me I should be happy Rashida is not coming,” Reuters reported her saying. “May God ruin him.” The nonagenarian was reportedly hopeful that Rep. Tlaib would come despite the Michigan congresswoman’s claim that doing so — on the condition that she wouldn’t promote boycotts of Israel — would humiliate her.

Trump tweeted that grandma came out the winner when Tlaib exposed her intention of using grandma as a pawn in her plan to stir up trouble on her visit to Israel.

And on it goes. I don’t think Maher’s ratings will move one way or the other over all this.

Just in case anyone was still under the impression that the trip to Israel planned by Representatives Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib was anything but a political stunt, let me relieve you of that notion.

To recap, Israel announced yesterday that they would be taking a pass on letting Omar and Tlaib prance around the country pushing boycotts and trashing the Jewish state. Seems reasonable to me.

Keep in mind, both Congressional members had the chance to go to Israel with the other 70 members of Congress that just got back. They refused because we all know what their real goal was. Their itinerary included meeting with numerous groups with terrorism ties and planning a dangerous visit to the Temple Mount with Palestinian authority members.

The entire trip was clearly just a propaganda tour to tout the anti-Semitic BDS movement and deny Israel’s right to exist. In fact, just to make that last point clear, they refused to even label their trip as being to Israel, instead asserting they were going to “Palestine,” which does not exist.

Despite the bad faith shown by Omar and Tlaib, Israel did offer to grant the latter a humanitarian waiver to go visit her grandmother in the West Bank.

Initially, Tlaib wrote a letter requesting to enter and promised not to promote BDS while in the country. Her grandmother is 90 and isn’t likely to be around much longer.

Westlake Legal Group tlaib0letter-768x537 Rashida Tlaib Shuns Her Own Grandmother to Trash Israel Sanction rashida tlaib Politics Israel Ilhan Omar Gross Grandmother Front Page Stories Front Page Featured Story ego divest democrats boycott bds antisemitism anti-semitic

That request was granted by Israel with the only condition being that she not promote BDS. Within hours though, Tlaib had changed her mind.

Think about what she’s saying.

Her position is that she values promoting the anti-Semitic BDS movement so much that she’d rather let her grandmother die before visiting her if it means not getting to savage Israel for a few days. Who thinks like this?

This is ego and politics over family to such a degree that it’s pretty stunning to witness.

The Israelis are rightfully pointing to this as proof they made the right decision yesterday. Rashida Tlaib’s hatred of Israel is so ingrained and pervasive that she’s shunning her own grandmother over it.

You want to know the real reason Tlaib wrote that letter? Because she wanted Israel to say no. That would have allowed her to claim them as being so cruel they wouldn’t even let her visit her dying grandmother. When Israel said yes, that left her scrambling and this was the best she could come up with.

As I wrote yesterday, Israel 100% made the right choice to not let Omar and Tlaib into the country. This latest move by Tlaib only reinforces that. These are not genuine actors. They are propagandists for the Palestinian Authority, a terror regime, and they deserve absolutely no platform to spread their hatred. Israel had no obligation to give them one.

EU Preparing to Put Warning Labels on Jewish Products

Westlake Legal Group jewish-business-620x465 EU Preparing to Put Warning Labels on Jewish Products settlement Politics Palestinians Israel Ilhan Omar holocaust Front Page Stories Front Page Featured Story European Union democrats boycott bds antisemitism anti-semite Advocate General

The European Union is preparing to add warning labels on Jewish products made in Israel. Not content with generations of antisemitism before and after the Holocaust, Europe’s ruling class apparently thinks it’s a good idea to push what is the equivalent of an in kind contribution to the boycott, divestment, and sanction movement.

Per The Washington Free Beacon.

The European Union is poised to mandate that Israeli products made in contested territories carry consumer warning labels, a decision that could trigger American anti-boycott laws and open up what legal experts describe as a “Pandora’s box” of litigation, according to multiple sources involved in the legal dispute who spoke to the Washington Free Beacon.

The Advocate General of the European Court of Justice recently issued non-binding opinion arguing that EU law requires Israeli-made products to be labeled as coming from “settlements” and “Israeli colonies.”

This kind of ridiculous language ignores everything we know about the rules of war and about the standards every other country on earth is held too. It’s not an illegal “settlement” or “colony” when you beat off almost a dozen Arab countries that were trying to eradicate you in a hot war. But because antisemitism is so pervasive, Israel gets held to a completely different standard and is expected to hand every piece of land they rightfully won back over to terrorist groups that want to destroy them. It’s mind-numbing.

Even dumber is that the same EU Advocate General who made this decision also decided that products from the same area must be labeled as coming from “Palestine,” which does not exist. This is pure politics and simply a hand out to anti-Semites pushing BDS.

“The Advocate General’s opinion said that goods produced by Muslims are to be labeled from ‘Palestine,’ and goods produced by Jews labeled as coming from ‘Israeli colonies,’ Goldstein said. “Both people are living in the same geographic location, and yet Jewish goods are being treated differently.”

Keep in mind that such labels dictating products are from settlements and colonies is not required of any other nation on earth. This is why BDS is inherently anti-Semitic. It seeks to apply barriers to the only Jewish state on the planet while applying no such barriers to far worse actors. The same groups demanding Israel be boycotted are often against sanctions countries like Iran or Venezuela. This is the position Rep. Ilhan Omar holds, for example.

Europe is getting more and more militant against Jews. There’s been a sharp rise in violent antisemitism as massive migration from the Middle East has overwhelmed many countries. But to blame it strictly on that would not tell the whole story. Carrying just as much blame are the governments of many Western European countries that have long histories of antisemitism. France is actually who started this entire ordeal by first mandating Israeli businesses label their products with clearly political messages. That led to the lawsuit which the EU is now ruling on.

All of this is a call back to boycotts of Jewish businesses before the Holocaust in which Jews were mandated to post signs announcing who they were so anti-Semites could avoid them. It is simply astonishing that such tactics are on the verge of becoming law in Europe again. None of this appears to be getting better and it underscores, now more than ever, exactly why Israel is necessary as a safe haven for the Jewish people.

Michigan’s #1 Breakfast Chain Gets Targeted by Trump Haters, and Taste Buds & Sound Living Suffer – Just Ask Brad Pitt

A Michigan restaurant chain is currently under threat of boycott by hundreds on Facebook and Reddit.

The reason? According to its Federal Election Committee filing, in the words of Chris Isaak, “Baby did a bad bad thing”: It made contributions to President Trump.

NOOOOoooooooo!!

From local Fox 17:

[H]undreds of Facebook and Reddit users are posting they will no longer be eating at Anna’s House after seeing a Federal Election Commission filing detailing its political contributions.

The 8-location Anna’s was “voted #1 Best Breakfast in Michigan.” But in April, it coughed up $15,000 to joint fundraising committee Trump Victory.

Westlake Legal Group 1f641 Michigan’s #1 Breakfast Chain Gets Targeted by Trump Haters, and Taste Buds & Sound Living Suffer – Just Ask Brad Pitt Uncategorized redditt Michigan josh beckett joel freeman Front Page Stories fox 17 federal election committee doug pitt doug chu donald trump democrats Culture Campaigns brad pitt boycott anna's house Allow Media Exception Activism 2020

This whole hubbub began when 30-year-old Facebooker Doug Chu shared a screenshot of Anna’s FEC documentation.

“[I]t was shared on Wednesday and shared it to his personal Facebook page. It’s since been shared hundreds of times, mostly by people upset to learn about the restaurant chain’s support of the President.”

Perhaps surprisingly, Mr. Chu’s all about his religious responsibility:

“My political beliefs, at their core, come from being a Christian. More specifically, from studying the Bible and and paying attention to the kind of society God wants people to live in, as well as from working to apprentice myself to Jesus’ teachings on how to treat other people.”

But eaterie owner Josh Beckett isn’t ashamed of what he did. He released a statement to that effect:

“I am proud to live in a country where we are free to have different opinions and to support a candidate of our choice. At Anna’s House, we employ and serve people of all backgrounds and beliefs, without judgement. Our goal is to treat everyone like family – and in families, there are often differences of opinion. Embracing these differences and respecting each other despite them is what makes our country great. If you are looking for an open, supportive, and accepting place to enjoy a great meal and conversation, Anna’s House is here for you.”

That reminds me of what Brad Pitt’s brother, Doug, said about his conservative Christian family, in contrast with the agnostic liberal actor:

“You know, I think moms and dads and kids agree to disagree all over the world. So why would our family be any different? There can be healthy discussion when people disagree with you. The bad thing is when it turns to venom and negativity, and we don’t have that in our family. It’s open discussion. We can learn from each other and, if anything, it solidifies your point. Or maybe you learn something.”

What a beautiful thing. Doug is exactly right. That’s the way family should be, including the American family.

But some aren’t for it.

Kent County Republican Party Chair Joel Freeman told Fox 17 what he thinks about that, as it relates to orange juice and waffles:

“Treating people with different political viewpoints as enemies to be eliminated is toxic and counterproductive. Anna’s House is a popular locally-owned business that has found success serving delicious breakfasts that everyone can enjoy. It’s too bad that some would prefer division and strife over breaking bread, but that just means there’s more waffles for the rest of us.”

Of course, participating in boycotts is one’s right as a citizen. But in my view, if you’re refusing to get a pancake simply because you’ve heard that a company quietly and respectfully made a donation to a presidential campaign, you’re giving up palatable ecstasy for a wrong cause.

Eat the pancake — it’s delicious.

Tapper to Rashida Tlaib: Why do you only want to boycott Israel and not, say, Egypt or Pakistan or Saudi Arabia?

Westlake Legal Group rt-4 Tapper to Rashida Tlaib: Why do you only want to boycott Israel and not, say, Egypt or Pakistan or Saudi Arabia? The Blog Saudi Arabia rashida tlaib palestinian Israel Iran Egypt boycott bds

I would happily boycott Egypt or Saudi Arabia for human rights violations, Tlaib insists, responding to Tapper’s question.

Okay, he says. Then why don’t you?

I would do it if those boycott movements existed, she replies, or if there was a resolution on the House floor to that effect.

You can anticipate the reply to that: Why don’t those boycott movements exist? She’s begging the question Tapper is asking here.

And she’s a farking congresswoman. She could introduce a resolution about Egypt herself. Certainly she could use the enormous public megaphone that the Squad (and the president) have given her to broaden public awareness of human rights violations across the Middle East. So, again, to paraphrase Tapper, why doesn’t she?

The most charitable read on her comments is that Rashida Tlaib, social justice warrior, simply will not lift a finger to pressure a foreign regime unless someone else does so first. She’ll join the parade once it’s started, but don’t bug her to get it going. Just let her know where to show up after it’s begun.

The less charitable read is that, as the quote in the clip from Chuck Schumer suggests, the BDS movement and its progressive adherents have a special animus towards Israel that isn’t similarly inflamed by Islamic fascist regimes. Supply your own theory as to why.

Enjoy her displays of civic and geopolitical derring-do while you can, by the way, because Josh Kraushaar’s right that she’s probably not long for Congress:

The same identity-centered politics that generates so much attention for Tlaib and her three like-minded colleagues (Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, and Ayanna Pressley) is what’s jeopardizing her standing back home in her Detroit-area district. Tlaib struggled to win significant African-American support in her narrow primary win last year, and she faces the threat of a one-on-one matchup against established Detroit City Council President Brenda Jones in next year’s election.

Unlike Ocasio-Cortez and Pressley, who capitalized on the diversification of their districts to defeat white incumbents, Tlaib underperformed with the nonwhite voters in her district last year. She benefited from numerous African-American candidates splitting up the black vote, allowing her to win with just 31 percent of the vote, a narrow 900-vote plurality. (With fewer candidates on the ballot, Jones defeated Tlaib narrowly in a concurrent primary election to serve out the last eight weeks of the term after Rep. John Conyers’s resignation.)

How’d Tlaib pull off her win? White progressives, of course. She’s the sort of person who runs around calling for a $20 minimum wage (while offering her own interns $15) and insisting that the left’s bete noire, Israel, be isolated internationally. Ideologues handed her her term in the House, and Tlaib must be keenly aware that her only chance at a second term depends on them turning out en masse for her in next year’s primary against Jones (who’ll doubtless have establishment Dem support in hopes that she can rid Pelosi of her Tlaib headache). That is, if nothing else, it’s in Tlaib’s political self-interest to single out Israel for special opprobrium. It’s the sort of policy trash her base wants.

She did at least acknowledge Israel’s right to exist here, albeit quickly noting that it exists to the detriment of Palestinians. Doesn’t sound too two-state-y.

AOC on House BDS resolution: If we punish nonviolent forms of protest, it might force people into violence

Westlake Legal Group a-6 AOC on House BDS resolution: If we punish nonviolent forms of protest, it might force people into violence tlaib The Blog Terrorism resolution palestinian ocasio-cortez Israel Hamas boycott bds

Why, my dear congresswoman, is that a threat?

Of course it’s not a threat, AOC would say. She says right there in the quote below that she hates violence, doesn’t she? Right, but in practice it amounts to “Let me get my way or don’t be surprised if people end up hurt.” If we discourage boycotts of Israel, even with nothing stronger than a frowny-face resolution in the House, then we shouldn’t act shocked later when people start, say, vandalizing Israel-linked businesses to express their frustration instead.

Which was already happening in Rashida Tlaib’s backyard, by the way, even before yesterday’s resolution passed.

The point is to preemptively shift blame away from the violent actor and onto his nonviolent critics:

Ocasio-Cortez said Tuesday that BDS is “a tough issue, especially for constituencies back home,” but told BuzzFeed News that “ultimately it comes down to protecting free speech. And my concern with being overly punitive on nonviolent forms of protest is that it forces people into other channels and I would hate to be a part of, you know, paving that kind of path.”

But Ocasio-Cortez said she wasn’t disappointed by how few Democrats voted with her, saying, “I don’t think so. … I saw how those votes were going.”

What’s she saying here about BDS supporters, wonders Noah Pollak?

The resolution condemning BDS ended up passing 398-17, with Ocasio-Cortez, Tlaib, and Ilhan Omar — but not Ayanna Pressley, the fourth member of the Squad, interestingly — voting no. I reiterate a point made in yesterday’s post: The resolution wasn’t “punitive” towards free speech in any way, not “overly” and not minimally. It suggested no sanction for BDS supporters. It was the legislative equivalent of a thumbs-down emoji. If merely indicating disapproval of BDS is enough to force adherents into “other channels” then we have a major problem.

But that’s of a piece with AOC’s view of criticism generally. Remember, her response to Pelosi’s jabs at the Squad was to wonder if she had a problem with women of color and to note that the four members were receiving death threats. Criticism of Ocasio-Cortez and her causes is perpetually deemed illegitimate at best and dangerous incitement at worst, even when it’s coming from Democratic leaders. Go figure that she’d view a toothless House resolution as potential justification for a terrorist backlash.

This “don’t criticize me or else” logic wouldn’t fly for her in other contexts, needless to say. If a Trump fan threw a rock through her campaign-office window, she’d be irate if the White House spun it as a regrettable but understandable burst of frustration over the recent House resolution condemning Trump’s “go back where you came from” tweets about the Squad. “If the president can’t express his opposition to their views through nonviolent means without formal disapproval from Congress,” the WH press office might say, “then we can’t be surprised when his fans decide that violent opposition is the only alternative.” That response would itself be condemned, correctly, as de facto incitement, possibly even drawing a second rebuke from the House. But here’s AOC embracing the same thought process for the BDS movement. No one will bat an eye, because who cares what one of the most influential politicians in America says about something like this? She’s not the president, right?

Rashida Tlaib compares anti-Israel boycott movement with boycotts of Nazi Germany, apartheid South Africa

Westlake Legal Group rt-2 Rashida Tlaib compares anti-Israel boycott movement with boycotts of Nazi Germany, apartheid South Africa tlaib The Blog schneider Sanctions resolution republicans pelosi omar ocasio-cortez House divest democrats boycott bds

Via the Free Beacon, this is why Pelosi agreed to let the BDS resolution come to the floor in the first place, right? Normally Speakers don’t greenlight legislation, especially meaningless legislation like “sense of the House” resolutions, when they’re apt to cause tensions within their own caucus about sensitive political subjects.

But I think Ringo here and the other three members of the Squad left her no choice. Trump has already attacked them repeatedly for being anti-Israel, a deliberate attempt to make them the face of the Democratic Party on that and other issues. Pelosi is desperate for ways to counter that message. Solution: Give centrist Dems an opportunity to show their support for Israel by voting for a resolution condemning BDS. And hope that not too many progressives go the other way, creating unhappy headlines.

So it was thoughtful of Rashida Tlaib to hand this soundbite to Trump’s presidential campaign knowing that today’s big vote is destined to not go his way. Also, say what you want about her but she’s very much in sync with her district. The latest news out of Dearborn:

A franchisee has delayed the scheduled opening of his Burgerim restaurant in Dearborn amid backlash from the Arab-American community over the popular burger company’s Israeli roots.

Sam Zahr, a Lebanese-American who lives in Dearborn, said he was too worried to open the restaurant on Greenfield Road after his kids were bullied and he received threatening messages from those opposed to the burger chain founded in Israel

“I told you, you are not like us,” someone wrote in a Facebook message to Zahr. “You have Palestinian and Lebanese blood on your hand if you open up that joint.”

In another incident, he set up a tent with free burgers outside the soon-to-open Royal Oak store for Ramadan, a Muslim holiday in April, but he said the tent was destroyed the next morning.

Zahr has opened Burgerim franchises in other cities in Michigan. Only in Dearborn has he encountered a problem. And before you ask, no, of course Tlaib won’t be pressed on whether her repulsive Nazi analogies are contributing to a “climate of hate” that’s made it unsafe for Jews and Israel-linked business to operate in her backyard. “Climate of hate” hand-wringing runs one way only.

I encourage you to read the text of the House resolution, just to see for yourself how toothless it is relative to Tlaib’s absurd alarmism in the clip. “Our right to free speech is being threatened with this resolution,” she warns. “It sets a dangerous precedent because it attempts to delegitimize a certain people’s political speech and to send a message that our government can and will take action against speech it doesn’t like.” It does no such thing, as Philip Klein recently noted. The strongest “action” it takes is to declare that the House “opposes the Global Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions Movement (BDS Movement) targeting Israel, including efforts to target United States companies that are engaged in commercial activities that are legal under United States law, and all efforts to delegitimize the State of Israel.” There’s no penalty for supporting BDS. Again, the whole reason they’re voting on this in the first place is that the anti-Israel cranks in Pelosi’s caucus can’t and won’t be silenced, leaving pro-Israel Dems with no choice but to try to drown them out. But the Squad’s brand of populist progressivism (maybe any populism, really?) requires an endless cycle of victimization and defiance to propel itself, so Tlaib has to trump up a phony grievance that her right to free speech is being threatened because the House happens to think that her politics on this issue are demagogic Jew-baiting garbage.

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey: On second thought, we welcome Nike to our state despite them canceling the Betsy Ross sneakers

Westlake Legal Group br Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey: On second thought, we welcome Nike to our state despite them canceling the Betsy Ross sneakers The Blog Sneakers republican nike kaepernick flag Doug Ducey boycott Betsy Ross Arizona

Good lord. The second double flip-flop by a major politician in the span of two days. That’s like back-to-back no-hitters in baseball.

Last year Nike announced that it would build a new manufacturing plant in Goodyear, Arizona, bringing more than 500 jobs with it. Score one for Gov. Doug Ducey. Then, last week, news broke that the company had withdrawn its new sneakers featuring the colonial-era Betsy Ross flag from stores after Nike spokesman and Woke Pope Colin Kaepernick objected that it was racist or whatever. Ducey wasn’t going to stand for that, even if it meant flushing hundreds of jobs down the crapper:

Arizona’s loss would be New Mexico’s (or some other state’s) gain, it seemed. But hold on. After Ducey posted his tweets, the mayor of Goodyear issued a statement of her own insisting that “We will honor the commitment we made in our agreement.” That was 10 days ago, with the deal momentarily in limbo.

Then, finally, came resolution early today. Nike would be coming to Goodyear after all, according to an excited … Doug Ducey?

He was against the plant coming to Arizona before he was in favor of it, but he was in favor of it before he was against it. Double flip-flop. Which means, I guess, that I need to issue a correction to this post: I thought Ducey’s Nike rant on Twitter was a sort of informal announcement that he planned to run for president in 2024, but that must have been incorrect. No pol who’s eager to pander to righty populists by waging culture war over sneakers would dare turn around and cave — especially not this quickly. He’d look like a total yutz.

In fairness, this isn’t so much a double flip-flop as it is a one-and-a-half flip-flop. Ducey never explicitly said in his Twitter rant on July 2 that he didn’t want Nike’s business in his state, although he certainly strongly implied it. What he said was that he didn’t want the company to receive the $1 million in state financial incentives that had been earmarked for its new plant. And according to the Arizona Republic, it’s still not going to receive those incentives. Ducey stuck to his guns on that and Nike decided to come to Goodyear anyway. The wrinkle is that the company *will* still receive the larger $2 million incentive package it was set to receive from the city of Goodyear itself. Essentially, Nike decided that it was willing to sacrifice $1 million in the name of staying on track with its new plant and watching the governor of Arizona have to swallow his supposed patriotic indignation over its sneaker decision. To Nike, watching Ducey cave might have been worth that much to them since it signaled in a newsy way that any halting efforts to boycott the company over the Betsy Ross thing have already fizzled.

I wonder what convinced Ducey to back the deal after he seemed to usher Nike towards the exit. Maybe he got an earful from pols and citizens in Goodyear that they’d make his life miserable if he cost them hundreds of jobs because of a dispute over whether a shoe design is or isn’t sufficiently patriotic. Possibly he was told by state lawyers that he’d have trouble in court if Nike challenged his decision to withdraw the state financial incentives, since governments aren’t supposed to discriminate on the basis of political viewpoint in making official decisions. Or maybe Ducey just misjudged how angry righties were at the time and were likely to remain about the Betsy Ross sneakers being flushed down the memory hole. He may have thought at the time that Trump was about to jump on the sneaker news and call for a boycott, igniting grassroots Republican opposition to Nike. If that had happened, Ducey would have been positioned at the front of the parade as someone who got to the issue before even Trump did. A populist leader! But Trump ignored the issue — surprisingly — and righties seemed to forget about it in short order, leaving Ducey in the unhappy position of leading a one-man parade that was going to cost his state major economic benefits. He did the right thing in the end, however grudgingly.

Elderly Home Depot Founder Punches Back at the Boycott Over His Support of Trump: ‘It Sure as Hell is Not Going to Stop Me’

Home Depot co-founder Bernie Marcus has fired back at the touted boycott of his stores via a Facebook entry Wednesday.

For those who missed it, a June 30th article in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution delivered this to shrieking wokees:

He also has been a major political donor. According to OpenSecrets.org, he was a top contributor to Donald Trump during his presidential run. And Marcus told the AJC that he plans to support the president’s re-election bid. While Trump “sucks” at communication, Marcus said, the president deserves praise for boosting U.S. jobs, confronting China on trade and taking action against Iranian and North Korean aggression.

Marcus said his political giving remains far smaller than what he gives to philanthropic causes and what he plans to give in the future.

He’s cool with der Fürher Trump?? Cue the outrage.

But do those hip enough to be offended know how to build a house? How would they damage the business by refusing to buy Bernie’s 2×4’s?

That question aside, Big B got mad.

His post:

I woke up this morning thinking it was going to be another great day. I’ve been celebrating with friends, family and the community since I turned 90. I’ve told you about the gracious gift of $117 million that was collected and given in my honor to four charities that mean a lot to me. All that happiness blew up because I said in a newspaper interview that I have supported and will continue to support Donald Trump.

Boom!

So what’d he get from the side which once touted tolerance?

A little bit o’ this:

Negative stories… vicious threats, without cause, to boycott the company that has enabled my foundation to give billions to support autism, medical research, education, heart and neurological issues like stroke, and to help our veterans. The company that I retired from in 2002 and have not had a business relationship with in almost 20 years. A company that has employed more than a half-million people. The people who work there are affiliated with both political parties or no party at all. They are of all religions and all colors and backgrounds. Why would people want to hurt them?

Excellent question.

All because I give my voice and some of my money to our President. Am I in China? Argentina? Russia? That’s what it feels like to me.

Chances are this story doesn’t surprise you. We’re living in a time when companies are taking political stands like it’s running out of style, and there are forces attempting to inject a new fascistic morality: Either you’re far Left, or you’re evil.

And there are people out there with masks who are lovin’ fighting evil (holy cow, here).

Hence, an elderly man being persecuted for something which, 20 years ago, would’ve elicited virtually no reaction among the opposition other than, “So?”

Bernie doesn’t deserve it.

But I think he’s still doing okay. He’s lived to be 90, and he’s managed to make billions of dollars. I might just call that a major win.

And what kinda guy wins like that? This kind:

It saddens me that our country has come to this, where I, as a private citizen, cannot express my feelings. It angers me and it saddens me, but it sure as hell is not going to stop me. If you thought it would, you’ve got the wrong guy.

In the next ten years, God willing, I will accomplish more to save this world than my critics will do even if they had forty lifetimes.

May his next 10 be his best 10.

Get ’em, Tiger.

— And might I say I’m very happy with the interior paint I just bought from Bernie’s store. The color match was remarkable, and I’m at this present moment surrounded by its greatness.

The Reason Why the Home Depot Boycott Was Doomed to Fail Before It Even Began Is Simple

Earlier I covered the fact that the co-founder of Home Depot, Bernie Marcus, was revealed to be a Trump supporter who plans on donating millions to Trump’s campaign for 2020 just like he did for Trump in 2016. This sparked a trending Twitter hashtag “#BoycottHomeDepot” which, upon exploring the hashtag on the site for a bit, produced far more backlash against supporters of the hashtag than agreement with it.

As I wrote Tuesday morning, what’s likely going to happen is that Home Depot may actually experience a small spike profits due to people shopping there out of spite. It happened with Chick-fil-A and Hobby Lobby, and there’s no reason to believe Home Depot won’t experience the same bump.

But even if people don’t go to Home Depot to troll the outrage brigades on the left with their wallets, Home Depot likely won’t suffer one lost cent due to the internet hashtag and it’s for a very simple reason.

The people who are boycotting Home Depot don’t go to Home Depot.

Let’s break this down. The solid majority of people who would support a hashtag like this, or even know what a hashtag is, are around Millennial aged. I’m sad to say, as a member of that generation, that millennials are too often inept when it comes to skills older generations easily understood.

In 2014, author and economist Neil Howe wrote a piece in Forbes detailing studies that showed millennials are sorely lacking life skills despite the fact that they are the most educated generation the world has ever produced:

In fact, Millennials are unfamiliar with a broad range of life skills. They are less likely than older generations to know how to sew, make basic home repairs, or drive manual-transmission cars. With GPS always at their fingertips, many never really learned to use physical landmarks to guide them. Some can’t even imagine how people functioned before mobile IT. One Millennial wrote an article asking older people how they used to look up information, meet up with friends in public places, and handle getting lost without smartphones. A Boomer responded that he visited the library, scheduled meet-ups, and learned to read a road map.

Millennials can’t be fully blamed for this. Technology has advanced so far that needing to learn these things hasn’t become as important as it used to be. If a millennial presses the right buttons on their smart phone, someone will show up to their door and fix whatever problem they’re having with their home. Howe even makes mention of this:

Generational traits are also contributing to this attitudinal shift. Millennials tend to trust “the system” and don’t mind relying on digital infrastructure for everything. Boomers and Xers are more likely to think that one day it might fail them. So they have backup plans. As one “modern survival” blogger put it in a post about the younger generation, if and when everything goes wrong, “there are so many that will just be so clueless. No common sense and no skills.”

Back to the Home Depot boycott. A lot of the people expressing rage at the fact that someone would dare to support Trump openly are likely the same ones that, should something break in their home, would call a person to come fix it. That blue collar worker who is going to fix the problem is going to have to go somewhere to get the materials necessary to fix the problem.

Chances are he’s going to go to Home Depot. Everything he would need he can find it there in one spot.

And that man likely supports Trump. According to the Washington Examiner, blue collar workers like Trump, and even those whom were expected to go to Biden ended up heading in the opposite direction. This includes the older generations who are more likely to visit Home Depot themselves:

In a survey of key battleground states conducted after Biden entered the 2020 Democratic primary, Trump not only has a 46%-44% edge, but he has a 26-point lead among non-college educated workers earning $75,000 or less, considered the blue-collar base and a Biden target.

What’s more, the battleground state survey from WPA Intelligence showed that Trump does better with Biden’s other main support group, older voters, and has a 48%-44% lead over Biden in Florida, dubbed the Democrat’s “firewall.”

The Home Depot boycott, despite its status as a viral trending hashtag, is about as hollow and hefty as a Wiffle ball.
