CNN’s Brian Stelter lampooned on social media over documentary announcement

CNN’s critics had fun with the network’s in-house media reporter Brian Stelter on Wednesday when he promoted an upcoming documentary about “disinformation and the cost of fake news” on the heels of the liberal network settling a multimillion-dollar defamation lawsuit filed by Covington Catholic High School student Nick Sandmann amid various other controversies.

“HBO just announced something I’ve been working on for a couple of years: A documentary titled ‘AFTER TRUTH: DISINFORMATION AND THE COST OF FAKE NEWS.’ The film will premiere on TV and online this March,” Stelter tweeted.

CNN SETTLES NICK SANDMANN DEFAMATION LAWSUIT

The film is directed by Andrew Rossi and executive produced by Stelter. It aims to explore “the rising phenomenon of ‘fake news’ in the U.S. and the impact that disinformation, conspiracy theories and false news stories have on the average citizen,” according to WarnerMedia.

“After Truth: Disinformation and the cost of fake news” will help explain “how post-truth culture has become an increasingly dangerous part of the global information environment,” the company added.

WarnerMedia is the parent company of both HBO and Stelter’s CNN.

CNN’s critics had fun with the network’s in-house media reporter Brian Stelter on Wednesday when he promoted an upcoming documentary about “disinformation and the cost of fake news.”

Media Research Center vice president Dan Gainor told Fox News that “it’s hard to tell if this is a documentary or an autobiography.”

“One of the most amazing things about the news media is they can’t even envision how people will look at what they are doing in a critical way,” Gainor said.

In addition to the recent settlement with Sandmann, Stelter’s tweet came as CNN was trending on social media because of backlash to CNN political correspondent Abby Phillip’s performance during the network’s Democratic debate in Iowa on Tuesday night.

FOLLOWING CNN-SANDMANN SETTLEMENT, BEEF ERUPTS BETWEEN COVINGTON STUDENTS’ LAWYERS

The network cited unnamed sources close to Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., who claimed that Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., told her that he didn’t believe she could win a presidential election because she’s a woman. Sanders denied the claim, but Warren affirmed the report — leading to a widely panned debate moment.

Despite Sanders’ debate stage denial, CNN’s moderator immediately turned to Warren and asked, “What did you think when Sen. Sanders told you a woman could not win the election?”

The moment was condemned by pundits on both sides of the aisle and resulted in a variety of disparaging hashtags related to the liberal network.

“CNN is usually a punching bag for conservatives in the Trump era, but I can’t say I’ve seen it so harshly criticized from the left as it is today due to last night’s debate and particularly the treatment of Bernie,” wrote The Hill media reporter Joe Concha.

‘MORNING JOE’ HOSTS SAY CNN DEMOCRATIC DEBATE ‘PAINFUL,’ CALL OUT MODERATOR’S ‘BIZARRE’ QUESTION

NewsBusters managing editor Curtis Houck told Fox News that it’s “incredibly ironic” the documentary was announced at the same time that “CNN is grappling” with a debate that was even panned by the far-left MSNBC.

“Add in Stelter’s recent complaint that calling D.C. journalists ‘swamp creatures’ is ‘hateful speech’ and you have quite the week for HBO to announce his latest ride atop his high horse,” Houck said, referring to a recent segment when the CNN media reporter condemned White House Deputy Press Secretary Hogan Gidley for criticizing reporters.

Stelter’s announcement was immediately hit with criticism and mockery.

The announcement also came one day after attorney Michael Avenatti, who was a CNN guest hundreds of times at the height of his fame, was arrested over allegations that the high-profile lawyer scammed a client out of $840,000. Stelter once famously declared that he was taking Avenatti “seriously” as a 2020 Democratic presidential contender – so many critics responded to the documentary news with footage of the 2018 interview.

Barstool Sports boss taunts Deadspin owner, offers to buy rival site out of ‘spite’

Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy continued his long-running feud with Deadspin on Friday, offering to buy and save the struggling website out of “spite.”

Portnoy’s taunt was in response to news that Deadspin parent G/O Media would move the website from New York to Chicago and suspended negotiations with unionized employees. G/O Media CEO Jim Spanfeller’s memo about the decision was tweeted by a Wall Street Journal reporter and Portnoy quickly offered an alternative solution.

BARSTOOL SPORTS BOSS DAVE PORTNOY GLOATS AS RIVAL DEADSPIN SUFFERS MASS EXODUS, OFFERS FIRED EDITOR ‘BUTLER’ POSITION

“Hey @JimSpanfeller call me. I will buy, save, and make @deadspin successful. Why? 1 word. Spite,” Portnoy tweeted.

G/O Media did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

MEDIA BAD BOY BARSTOOL SPORTS THRIVING IN POLITICALLY CORRECT CLIMATE: ‘WE’RE PRETTY RARE’

Deadspin was famously a thorn in Barstool’s side, regularly posting critical stories about Portnoy and his company. As a result, Portnoy mocked Deadspin as the site crumbled last year amid a mass exodus of employees after staffers were told by new ownership to focus solely on sports.

“So by now everybody knows that Deadspin has imploded. 90% of the staff has either been fired or quit. It’s over,” Portnoy wrote in a blog post in October. “They are dead. I have destroyed them just like I have destroyed every single enemy who has ever dared cross my path.”

Portnoy even offered the site’s now-former deputy editor Barry Petchesky a $100,000 yearly salary with benefits to be his “butler” when he was fired by Deadspin for refusing to stick to sports.

TOP DEADSPIN EDITOR SAYS HE WAS FIRED AFTER REFUSING TO ‘STICK TO SPORTS’

Deadspin published new content on a regular basis for the last two months as the chaos unfolded. Spanfeller’s memo said he hopes to “restart the Deadspin publication as soon as possible in a manner that provides both the editorial freedom necessary” to thrive and the “business focus to ensure its long-term suitability.”

Spanfeller announced moving the site to Chicago is part of the new plan and scrapped plans to negotiate with unionized employees because of “unreasonable and unprecedented” demands.

Meanwhile, Barstool’s Chicago-based blogger, “Barstool Carl,” sarcastically welcomed Deadspin to the Windy City.

“We’re the sports guys in town,” he wrote. “You don’t get to put your feet up on our coffee table while we’re out here interviewing Jeff Fisher about how to fly-fish steelhead salmon … but I don’t want to discourage you as that would be very Un-Midwestern. So let me instead just say I’m very excited to see your Chicago Fire and expanded MLS coverage.”

CNN International doesn’t mention guest was spokesperson for Iranian hostage-takers during 1979 crisis

CNN International anchor Christiane Amanpour spoke with Iranian vice president for women and global affairs Massoumeh Ebtekar on Tuesday but failed to mention Ebtekar played a key role in the 1979 Iran hostage crisis.

Amanpour began by asking Ebtekar if Iran would “respond” to American calls for de-escalation, and critics didn’t appreciate her lengthy answer.

“Ebtekar took that question and offered a long-winded answer that gushed over CNN showing ‘millions who are marching in support and in commemoration of…the Commander of the Hearts’ against the Americans having ‘taken a terrorist action’ in ‘assassinat[ing]’ Soleimani,” NewsBusters managing editor Curtis Houck wrote.

CNN PUTS ‘BUILDING A MOOD OF DOOM’ NARRATIVE AHEAD OF FACTS WITH ANTI-TRUMP IRAN COVERAGE, CRITICS SAY

Houck also noted that Amanpour “failed to note to viewers that [Ebtekar] was a spokeswoman for the 1979 hostage-takers during the Iranian revolution that seized 52 Americans.”

A spokesperson for CNN International did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

On Nov. 4, 1979, Iranian militants seized the U.S. embassy in Tehran and took 52 American diplomats as hostages. They were held captive for 444 days and the crisis is widely considered a major point of departure for traditional diplomacy between the nations.

Back in 1988, The New York Times reported that Ebtekar “was the official interpreter and spokeswoman of the militants who occupied the American Embassy in Teheran” because of her ability to speak English.

Reporter M. Hanif Jazayeri circulated decades-old footage on Tuesday of Ebtekar declaring she would kill Americans if needed back in 1979 at the height of the crisis.

A reporter is heard asking, “Could you personally lift up a gun and put it to the head of one of these people and kill him?”

Ebtekar simply responded, “Yes.”

President Trump recently tweeted that he identified 52 Iranian sites to hit if Iran attacks Americans or U.S. assets, representing the 52 Americans who were held while Ebtekar was working with the hostage-takers.

During the interview with Amanpour, Ebtekar also called the killing of Soleimani a “terrible assassination.”

In April 2019, the State Department announced Iran was responsible for killing 608 U.S. troops during the Iraq War. Soleimani was the head of the Iranian and Iranian-backed forces carrying out those operations. According to the State Department, Soleimani orchestrated some 17 percent of all deaths of U.S. personnel in Iraq from 2003 to 2011. Despite that history, several prominent Democrats and liberal media members have condemned Trump for ordering the drone strike that killed him.

ABC News’ “The View” co-host Meghan McCain blasted People over the magazine’s “bizarre fake news headline” about her Tuesday confrontation with 2020 Democratic hopeful Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

McCain pressed Warren, D-Mass., over the way she described Gen. Qassem Soleimani, the now-deceased head of the Quds forces within Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard. McCain noted how Warren had called Soleimani a “murderer” and later described his death as an assassination.

MEGHAN MCCAIN CONFRONTS WARREN ON SOLEIMANI: WHY IS IT ‘SO HARD TO CALL HIM A TERRORIST?

At one point, McCain asked Warren whether she thought Soleimani was a terrorist. After twice describing Soleimani as “part of a group” designated as terrorists, Warren said “of course” Soleimani was himself a terrorist.

People covered the exchange by writing that McCain “couldn’t get a word in” during the Warren interview, but the fiery “View” co-host didn’t appreciate the magazine’s narrative.

“What kind of bizarre fake news headline is this? Did you not see us have a discussion about her labeling Soleimani a terrorist, OR her take on AOC’s statements about moderates in the dem party? We had a very interesting and respectful conversation. Warren didn’t ignore anything,” McCain tweeted.

“Warren … seemingly didn’t hear McCain amid applause from the crowd and other hosts’ comments,” People’s article read, ignoring that McCain had already pressed Warren to declare that Soleimani was a terrorist.

People did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Warren explained her “wealth tax” plan and McCain attempted to chime in at one point, but the Massachusetts Democrat didn’t acknowledge her.

Warren also responded to questions from McCain about other topics, such as whether or not she agrees with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., about moderates in the Democratic Party. Warren responded directly to McCain’s question about the comments made by AOC and the duo later joked about “wine cellars,” which Warren famously evoked to mock rival Pete Buttigieg at a debate last year.

People wasn’t the only publication to claim Warren ignored McCain, as the New York Daily News and HuffPost ran similar headlines.

Fox News Channel will host a town hall with 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg in Iowa on Sunday, Jan. 26, an event set to be moderated by Chris Wallace, said Fox News president and executive editor Jay Wallace on Tuesday.

“We are pleased to host Mayor Buttigieg for the second time this election cycle for a timely town hall in the influential state of Iowa,” Wallace said. “Once again, we are looking forward to providing our millions of viewers with an insightful discussion ahead of the first major contest of the primary season.”

The event will be the seventh town hall event of the current election season hosted by Fox News, and the sixth with a Democratic presidential candidate. Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum recently moderated a town hall with former HUD Secretary Julián Castro.

Other 2020 Democratic hopefuls to partake in Fox News town halls include Sens. Amy Klobuchar, Kirsten Gillibrand and Bernie Sanders.

“Fox News Sunday” host Wallace has participated in the coverage of nearly every major political event since joining Fox News in 2003. The veteran journalist became the first Fox News personality ever to moderate a general election presidential debate when he grilled Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton in 2016.

The Emmy-nominated Wallace has landed multiple news-making interviews, including sit-downs with Russian President Vladimir Putin, French President Emmanuel Macron, then-President Barack Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the first interview with President Donald Trump after he was elected in 2016.

FNC finished 2019 as the most-watched basic cable network for the fourth consecutive year, averaging 1.4 million daily viewers.

The Buttigieg town hall will air live on Fox News Channel at 7 p.m. ET, one week prior to the Iowa caucuses.

Judge Judy endorses Mike Bloomberg on ‘The View’: ‘Greatest country’ needs ‘greatest president’

Judge Judy Sheindlin declared her support for former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg’s presidential candidacy Monday on ABC’s “The View.”

Judge Judy, who has not publicly endorsed a presidential candidate in the past, explained why she’s going to bat for Bloomberg.

“I’ve never seen Americans so angry with each other as a family and it became sort of frightening when you couldn’t go to a social gathering and have a difference of opinion… if you view America as the greatest family on the planet, I felt as if it was time for America, which is the greatest country in the world, to have the greatest president,” she said. “When I looked at the field of 2020 candidates… there was no other voice, for me, other than the voice of someone who has experience in governance second only to the president of the United States.”

The TV judge’s appearance came on the first episode of 2020 for the ABC News daytime gabfest. She said that New York City has the “most diverse” population of anyplace in America and Bloomberg’s experience can help the nation.

Former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg pick up a 2020 presidential endorsement from Judge Judy.

“There was a good feeling [under Bloomberg], it was a feeling that things were run effectively and efficiently during his 12 years as mayor,” Judge Judy said. “I felt that way when he was the mayor and he’s a brilliant, self-made guy.”

Judge Judy defended Bloomberg as “not another” rich guy, because she feels he is the only candidate who “has experience governing and managing.”

“If he’s successful and happened to have made money being successful, that folks, is the American dream,” she said.

The fiery judge never clashed with the typically confrontational hosts, who wrapped up the segment by inviting her to co-host down the road. Judge Judy previously launched a new campaign ad giving her glowing endorsement to Bloomberg, which “The View” played for its audience.

‘HAIR-ON-FIRE’ PUNDITS’ REACTION TO SOLEIMANI KILLING ILLUSTRATES PARTISAN TRUMP COVERAGE, EXPERTS SAY

The judge, 77, known for her daytime TV show “Judge Judy,” appeared in a 30-second video shared by Bloomberg’s official campaign in which she explained why she was supporting him in the crowded Democratic field against incumbent candidate Donald Trump.

“I like to say you can judge someone’s character by what they’ve done,” she begins. “Mike Bloomberg has done amazing things and will be a truly great president. No one comes close to Mike Bloomberg’s executive achievement, government experience and impactful philanthropy. His steady leadership will unite our country and bring us through these very challenging times.”

Her endorsement is not exactly a surprise as she previously released an op-ed in USA Today in which she declared that Bloomberg is the only hope for the presidency. It raised eyebrows at the time as the former New York City Mayor had not yet announced his candidacy.

“The only way we can begin to come together again, I said, is if Michael Bloomberg, former mayor of New York City, becomes our next president,” the judge wrote at the time. “I realize I am taking a personal and a career risk in making such a statement. I have carefully stayed away from politics for 50 years, except to vote. But times have changed in our country, and I believe the moment has come for me to step out from behind the curtain.”

Radio personality Dennis Prager and comedian Adam Carolla’s film about free speech, “No Safe Spaces,” will be re-released on Friday to 70 screens across America.

“No Safe Spaces” has been praised by fans, evident by its 99 percent rating from audience members on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. The popularity has landed the film — which examines the politically correct world of academia driven by the political left — back in theaters.

DENNIS PRAGER ON WHY NEW FILM ‘NO SAFE SPACES’ IS UNFAIRLY RATED

“We are thrilled with the response from our fans and from the theaters,” Carolla told Fox News. “We’ll stay around as long as the fans want us. Free speech is never out of season. Part of what has made us realize this film needed another run was the amazing reception the film has received from our fans.”

Prager has called the film a “wake-up call” to the American people, claiming free speech is being trampled on to satisfy a political agenda.

The docudrama opened in Phoenix back on October 25 with the second-highest ever box office gross for a documentary playing on just one screen, according to the movie’s producers. “No Safe Spaces” raked in an estimated $45,000 on one screen, trailing only Michael Moore’s 2007 offering, “Sicko.”

DENNIS PRAGER: ‘NO SAFE SPACES’ SHOWS THE LEFT AS ‘A PURELY DESTRUCTIVE FORCE’

“No Safe Spaces” eventually expanded to theaters in Denver and San Diego before opening nationwide in November. The holiday season was packed with blockbuster hits such as “Frozen 2” and “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” but the pro-free speech film is set to return as Americans settle back into their routines.

Theaters in Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin will now carry “No Safe Spaces” when it returns on January 3.

Prager and Carolla are expected to make various media appearances to promote the film.

“No Safe Spaces” features commentary from a variety of Hollywood actors, scholars, academics, political figures, and media members across the political spectrum, including Van Jones, Alan Dershowitz, Jordan Peterson, Dave Rubin, Cornel West and Tim Allen.

CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin slammed for ‘pants-on-fire lie’ that abortion would be illegal in 20 states by now

CNN chief legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin was mocked Friday after a prediction he made 18 months ago — that conservatives on the U.S. Supreme Court would outlaw abortions in 20 states by now — has failed to come true.

“Anthony Kennedy is retiring. Abortion will be illegal in twenty states in 18 months,” Toobin tweeted on June 27, 2018.

THIS IS CNN? PRIMETIME SHOWS FILLED WITH LIBERAL OPINION, NOT STRAIGHT NEWS AS NETWORK CLAIMS

Toobin made the inaccurate prediction on the heels of Justice Anthony Kennedy announcing he would step down, giving President Trump an opportunity to fill his seat with a conservative. Judge Brett Kavanaugh was sworn in as the 114th Supreme Court justice a few months later — but Toobin’s prophecy remains false.

“There’s no legitimacy to much of what leftist pundits claim about the Trump era. And there’s no accountability for all the crazy garbage they claim that then never happens,” Gainor told Fox News. “The economy is great. Trump has gone out of his way to keep the U.S. out of wars. CNN chief legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin falsely predicted conservatives on the U.S. Supreme Court would outlaw abortions in 20 states by December 2019.

“Like a lot of things the liberal media have predicted in the Trump era, this prediction wasn’t just false, but a pants-on-fire lie,” Houck told Fox News. “Jeffrey Toobin is passed off on CNN as a nonpartisan, objective legal analyst, but tweets like this serve as perfect reminders that he’s just as liberal as the other CNN analysts, commentators, contributors and hosts.”

Critics took to Twitter to mock the CNN analyst on the anniversary of his inaccurate tweet:

Conservative state legislators attempted in 2018 to enact bans on all, most or some abortions, and by the end of the year, 25 new abortion bans had been signed into law in 12 states. However, lawsuits were filed to challenge the legislation in most states and the bans are not currently in effect.

NBC News Chuck Todd ripped for ‘embarrassing, enraging’ comments about disinformation

NBC News host Chuck Todd is under fire for saying Republicans have “an incentive structure to utter the misinformation” related to Russia in a news-making interview that has upset critics on both sides of the aisle.

Todd spoke with Rolling Stone for an interview that was originally published last week but Axios reported an excerpt on Thursday that put the piece back in the news. The “Meet the Press” moderator was asked about a recent interview with Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., who was accused by Rolling Stone’s Peter Wade of using “Russian talking points to defend Trump.” Wade then asked why Republicans are willing to go on the NBC News political show and spread disinformation.

“The fact is, and by the way, this isn’t going to be easy to show, but I actually think when we outline this it will, the right has an incentive structure to utter the misinformation,” Todd said.

“Look, I’ll just be honest, when I had the third senator [to spread Russian disinformation], Sen. Ted Cruz, come on my show and do this — who I did not expect to do this — I started to think, he wants the confrontation. He wants to use this for some sort of appeasement of the right,” Todd continued. “I didn’t know what else to think. I was stunned because he’s a Russia hawk.”

Todd then said he was “genuinely shocked” by Cruz, who he said specifically asked to appear on the show.

“So I do think one of the things that I want to explore on this is the incentive structure. One of the things we don’t fully appreciate in mainstream media on these attacks is that it’s become fun to attack the press, if that makes sense, on the right. It doesn’t matter if we’re right or wrong, attack them anyway,” Todd said. “People that are the loudest chanters of fake news and accusatory of us are the ones who, under a lie detector, would probably take our word over any word they’ve heard from the other side on whether something was poisonous or not.”

Media Research Center vice president Dan Gainor mocked Todd over the comments he made to Rolling Stone.

“Wow, what an interview. The kindest thing I can say is it’s delusional. Chuck thinks Trump has turned media bias into ‘sport.’ He never connects that three years of the press falsely claiming the president is a traitor results in a legitimate amount of criticism,” Gainor told Fox News. “I do agree with Chuck on one point. He said, ‘I don’t assume I’m 100 percent right, ever.’ He’s certainly correct about that view. It’s the one Americans should embrace with vigor.”

Fox News contributor Dan Bongino said he noticed Axios’ headline that “NBC’s Chuck Todd claims Republicans have an ‘incentive’ to spread misinformation” and didn’t appreciate it.

“A laughable statement from liberal activist, & prominent Russian collusion HOAXER, @chucktodd,” Bongino tweeted, while Mark Levin called Todd “a propagandist” who has “done enormous damage to freedom of the press and the political system.”

Many other prominent conservatives took to Twitter to condemn Todd’s comments, too:

New York University professor and media critic Jay Rosen called Todd’s Rolling Stone interview “explosive, embarrassing, enraging, and just plain weird” and took exception with Todd calling himself “naive” for not picking up on what he says is a GOP strategy of spreading falsehoods sooner.

“Itself an astounding statement that cast doubt on his fitness for office as host of ‘Meet the Press,’” Rosen wrote. “It’s not naive of him. It’s malpractice.”

“Chuck Todd’s entire brand is based on the claim that he understands politics. Since 2007, he has been NBC’s political director, which means he has influence over all coverage,” Rosen added. “He is literally the in-house expert on the subject. You don’t get to claim you are naive about politics when you have these kinds of positions.”

Rosen’s piece quickly spread across social media and many outspoken liberals also condemned Todd.

Todd also faced criticism for confusing author Toni Morrison and poet Maya Angelou in the same interview.

“I think we all made the mistake of not following Toni Morrison’s advice, which is when people tell you who they are, believe them,” Todd told the magazine.

However, the famous quote, which is actually “When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time,” actually came from Maya Angelou, not Morrison.

New Yorker editor David Remnick says Trump’s impeachment is ‘about the future of the Earth’

New Yorker editor David Remnick was ridiculed for declaring on Sunday that removing President Trump through impeachment is “about the future of the earth” during an appearance on CNN’s “Reliable Sources.”

“We’ve seen the Republicans stuck where they are. Their illusions about Trump remain… here’s what I hope that we understand. The stakes here are immense. It’s not just about the political future of one man, Donald Trump,” Remnick told CNN’s Brian Stelter when asked if Trump’s impeachment changed anything.

“It’s about the future of democracy and democratic process and this is a trend throughout the world,” Remnick continued. “It’s about the future of the Earth.”

Remnick went on to discuss climate change and Stelter didn’t ask why he feels the Earth’s future depended on whether or not Trump is removed from office.

Remnick then explained that liberal members of the mainstream media are irritated that more Americans don’t support the removal of Trump.

“We don’t understand why the evidence of things, why facts don’t penetrate so many of our brothers and sisters in the United States of America. And this is a source of great frustration for the press,” Remnick said.

Media Research Center analyst Nicholas Fondacaro wrote that Stelter’s weekly show “has become a home for nutty pontificators” and Remnick is the latest example.

“If more evidence was needed that Remnick was a left-wing activist and not a journalist, he decried how the GOP continued to back their President throughout the partisan impeachment process,” Fondacaro wrote. “Yeah, CNN was totally all about news and not opinion peddling. Right, Brian? This is CNN, unreliable sources.”

“I wonder what caused such distrust in the news. This is a real head-scratcher,” author Scott Adams wrote.
