The Ratings for CNN’s “Climate Crisis” Town Hall Are In

Last night, CNN subjected television viewers to the torturous exercise of listening to 2020 Democrat candidates riff on climate change for seven straight hours. We got all kinds of craziness, from Bernie promoting taxpayer funded abortions to cull the population and reduce emissions to Buttigieg lecturing on the morality of eating hamburgers. If you want the government to control every aspect of your life, these people are your ticket.

The question is, how many people were actually watching? If you guessed that Fox News, with just their regular lineup, would nearly triple CNN’s viewership, congrats.

Half of that probably came from airports and gyms. The numbers above are averages over the seven hour period and they aren’t particularly close to their competition. Even MSNBC’s raving conspiratorial lunacy almost doubled up CNN.

Perhaps the problem here isn’t content. Perhaps it’s just CNN? When Democrats go on Fox News or MSNBC for debates or “town halls,” they do much better in the ratings. When they go sit down with Don Lemon and Chris Cuomo, nobody watches. That’s not just a coincidence at this point. It really does seem as if the public have tuned out the gas-lighting, liberal network and certainly not without cause.

Or maybe it is content on some level? How many people really want to sit through even one hour (much less seven) of Democrats making wild claims and promising to destroy the economy? That’s not exactly riveting TV. It may also speak to the possibility that enthusiasm for this Democrat group is not nearly as high as the media would like you to believe.

There is one problem with some of the hot takes about last night’s town hall though. I’ve heard a lot of people saying Trump was the big winner. Can he really be the winner if no one was watching?

2 drivers charged in Saturday’s fatal I-66 crash as investigation continues

Police have identified the man who died in Saturday morning’s crash on Interstate 66 and have charged two drivers in the incident.

The crash happened shortly before 11 a.m. on the westbound lanes of I-66 east off exit 53 and sent a total of six people to the hospital. The crash closed the roadway for about 11 hours as police investigated.

Joseph M. Castellano of McLean, Virginia died on the scene, Virginia State Police said Sunday. His 28-year-old wife, who was the passenger in his car, is still being treated for life-threatening injuries. A GoFundMe account has been created to help with the costs of funeral and memorial services and hospital bills.

As the crash investigation continued into Sunday, Virginia State Police’s Corinne Geller clarified that there were a total of eight vehicles involved in Saturday’s crash. On Saturday, police said there were only seven vehicles involved.

The chain reaction crash involved five sedans, one SUV, a pickup truck and a tractor-trailer that overturned.

A 2007 BMW, driven by 40-year-old Jonathyn Bland, was traveling west on I-66 when it struck the vehicle in front of it.

The BMW then collided with the tractor-trailer, driven by 34-year-old Shahbaz Singh of Fairfax.

The tractor-trailer then collided with several vehicles — including a Toyota Rav4 — before overturning. The Toyota Rav4 went off the right side of I-66 and over the jersey wall and then caught on fire.

Bland and Singh were transported to Reston Hospital for treatment of their injuries. They were both charged with reckless driving.

Video shows the truck lying on its side in the roadway.

Three other people were transported to area hospitals with injuries.

Significant bailout delays developed on roads in Chantilly and in Centreville including Route 50, Route 29 and Braddock Road.

Drivers who were already on I-66 were diverted to Va. 286 via Exit 55. Drivers stuck between the point of diversion and the crash scene were guided by Virginia State Police into an emergency turnaround on the median strip and sent eastbound.

Some callers into the WTOP Traffic Center reported sitting in a standstill for more than an hour.

WTOP Traffic Reporter Dave Dildine said that the crash occurred in one of the most accident-prone sections of the highway.

“We often expect to see at least a couple wrecks per day in the westbound lanes as drivers merging from Fairfax County Parkway weave with drivers shifting right to exit at Route 28,” Dildine said.

“Jersey walls for the ongoing express lanes project are blocking much of the right shoulder on this portion of the highway, so when the crashes happen here, they immediately block lanes. Usually, they happen on the right side.”

Both Virginia State Police and the Fairfax County Crash Reconstruction Team are assisting with the crash investigation.

Site of fatal I-66 crash is 2nd-most incident prone section of the highway

The stretch of Interstate 66 in Virginia where a crash claimed the life of one person and sent several others to the hospital on Saturday is the second-most crash prone stretch of the highway, according to the WTOP Traffic Center incident database.

The roughly 2 1/2 miles between the Fairfax County Parkway and Route 28 has seen 444 reported crashes near or between the two interchanges on I-66 since the beginning of last year. Of those crashes, 283 were reported to have occurred in the westbound lanes while 161 were eastbound.

Only the area between Nutley Street and the Capital Beltway saw more reported incidents with 585 crashes reported in that area in the same time period.

WTOP Traffic Reporter Dave Dildine said that not only are crashes here frequent, the layout of the road means the effect they have on traffic is sizable.

In 2016, the Virginia Department of Transportation installed lane control signs to manage the flow of traffic and direct drivers to use the right westbound lane beyond Fairfax County Parkway as an exit-only lane onto Route 28 during the morning rush hour. That lane control system was taken apart at the beginning of the 66 Express Lanes project.

WTOP’s Dave Dildine contributed to this report.
