Man tried walking 351 miles to have sex with deputy he thought was 14-year-old girl, prosecutors say

A man was arrested after allegedly walking hundreds of miles from Indiana to Wisconsin to have sex with a teen — who turned out to be an undercover sheriff’s deputy.

Tommy Lee Jenkins, 32, recently moved from Oshkosh, Wis., to Whitestown, Ind., and on Oct. 1 started chatting with someone named “Kylee,” who he thought was a 14-year-old girl living in Neenah, Wis., with her mom, federal prosecutors said.

Jenkins allegedly “began demanding sexually explicit photographs from ‘Kylee’ and making plans to engage in sexual activity,” according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Wisconsin.

When he was rejected, authorities claim Jenkins decided to walk to her — 351 miles away. While he walked, “Jenkins continued to engage ‘Kylee’ in sexually explicit conversations and updated her as to his current location.”

The 32-year-old told the teen he wanted to have 500 children with her in one year, the Oshkosh Northwestern reported, citing court documents.

As it turns out, “Kylee” was not a 14-year-old — but a Winnebago County sheriff’s deputy working with the Internet Crimes Against Children task force.

When Jenkins arrived in Winnebago County on Oct. 10, he was arrested by local authorities and the FBI.

“Our nation faces an epidemic of child sexual abuse, with the Internet making it too easy for predators to communicate with children across the country,” U.S. Attorney Matthew Krueger said in a statement. “The Justice Department is committed to working with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to prosecute child sexual abuse aggressively.”

Jenkins was charged with using a computer to attempt to persuade, induce or entice a minor to engage in unlawful sexual activity. He faces a lifetime prison sentence if convicted and, according to online records, remains jailed at the Brown County Jail in Wisconsin.

A 10-year-old girl in New Jersey has died after falling off a ride at a festival, officials said.

The child was at the Deerfield Township Harvest Festival in Cumberland County after 6 p.m. on Saturday night when she was “ejected from an amusement ride,” according to New Jersey State Police.

A Chicago man with “anger management issues” killed four of his neighbors as they ate dinner and critically wounded another in a shooting Saturday at an apartment complex on the city’s Northwest Side, police said.

The suspect, whose identity has yet to be released, was known to the victims, Chicago police said. The man was taken into custody and a weapon was recovered at the scene.

CHICAGO JURY CONVICTS GANGBANGER WHO EXECUTED 9-YEAR-OLD IN REVENGE KILLING

The shooting happened around 5:30 p.m. when the suspect, a 67-year-old retired construction worker, went into his second-floor neighbor’s apartment and killed a family of three men and a woman who were sitting at a table eating dinner, First Deputy Superintendent Anthony Riccio told the Chicago Sun-Times.

“For reasons we yet don’t know, he opened fire on all four of those individuals, killing them all,” Riccio said, adding the suspect had lived in the building for 15 years.

He then went to a unit one floor above and shot another woman, critically injuring her, police said. Chicago police initially said that five victims were dead but later clarified that one was in critical condition and undergoing surgery.

The victims were all adults, police said. Their identities have not been released.

Riccio said neighbors described the alleged gunman as having “anger management issues.” He said the man had a history of complaints from other residents but investigators “don’t know what set him off.”

It was unclear how the man entered the apartments, but police said there was no forced entry.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot called the shooting “devastating” and “unfathomable” in a statement on Twitter.

“We mourn the loss, honor the victims, and continue the hard but necessary work of keeping our neighborhoods safe, and taking guns out of the hands of those who are mentally infirm,” she said.

The missing Utah woman who police said disappeared voluntarily has been found dead in her car, according to her family.

Erin Valenti, a 33-year-old CEO of Tinker Ventures, a Salt Lake City-based tech company, was discovered “deceased in her vehicle in San Jose” on Saturday. Before she was reported missing, Valenti was reportedly on her way to the San Jose International Airport in California to head home to Utah on Monday.

“Erin has been found. Please call off the search,” her family said in a statement, posted to Facebook by Missing Pieces Network. “We all greatly appreciate the effort and support people have provided. The family will release more information as they are able to.”

In the “Help Find Erin Valenti” Facebook group, the family continued: “Many of you have seen that the search for Erin has been called off. While we were praying for a different outcome, we are so appreciative for the help and support you have given.”

“Please remember Erin as the beautiful, smart, funny woman that she was. I don’t have any details that have not been in the media. I’m sure that Harrison will thank you himself when he is able, but please be patient,” the post read.

OREGON COLLEGE FRESHMAN REPORTED MISSING, FAMILY SAYS ‘THIS IS NOT LIKE HIM AT ALL’

Valenti’s husband, Harrison Weinstein, pleaded online Wednesday for help finding his wife. He said she was last seen in Palo Alto, Calif., on Monday afternoon, “but never returned her rental car or made it on her flight home to Utah.”

“Her phone has been off since Monday night. If you have seen or heard from her please let me know,” her husband wrote. “Any information to her whereabouts is much appreciated and can be directed to me, her family, or the San Jose Police Department.”

On Friday, San Jose Police Sgt. Enrique Garcia told KSTU investigators were “treating this case as a voluntary missing person.” However, Valenti’s family says she seemed to be distraught on the night she disappeared. Weinstein and Valenti’s parents told the station that they spoke to her on the phone Monday and she seemed manic, though she has no history of mental illness.

“I get that people have the right to disappear, but that’s not this,” Weinstein told KTVU. “Everything she said, she was planning on coming home. She was trying to get to the airport. She’s not thinking clearly.”

A San Jose police officer made contact with Valenti by phone Monday night, the East Bay Times reported. Weinstein told the outlet: “The officer said she wasn’t making any sense. They drove around looking for her on Monday night and never found her.”

Valenti’s mother, Whitey Valenti, said she spoke with her daughter “for hours on and off” on Monday night.

A black Texas woman was shot and killed by a white Fort Worth police officer who was called to the woman’s home for a welfare check, authorities said.

In a statement, the department said it received a call at 2:25 a.m. reporting an open front door at a residence. Responding officers searched the perimeter of the house and saw a person standing inside near the window, according to police.

“Perceiving a threat, the officer drew his duty weapon and fired one shot, striking the person inside the residence,” the department stated. In body camera video released by police, two officers search the home from the outside with flashlights before one shouts, “Put your hands up, show me your hands.” One shot is then fired through a window.

Officers entered the house and located an individual and a firearm, and began performing emergency medical care.

Fox 4 Dallas-Fort Worth identified the woman as 28-year-old Atatiana Jefferson. She succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. There were no other injuries.

The officer has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation, according to police. He has been with the Fort Worth Police Department since April 2018.

The department released bodycam footage of the incident “to provide transparent and relevant information to the public as we are allowed within the confines of the” investigation, it stated. Any video taken inside the house could not be distributed due to state law.

The neighbor who called 911 about the open front door told Fox 4 the police officers didn’t announce who they were or knock on the door before searching the outside of the house.

“When I made that non-emergency call, I didn’t say it was a burglary. I didn’t say it was people fighting. I didn’t say anything to make them have a gun. All they needed to do is ring the doorbell,” James Smith said.

“They didn’t park up front, they parked on the side. They sent SRT, which is the special response team. They didn’t have a plainclothes officer to knock on that door,” Pastor Kyev Tatum told Fox 4.

The incident comes less than two weeks after a white former Dallas police officer was sentenced to 10 years in prison for killing her black neighbor inside his own apartment. Amber Guyger said during her trial that mistook Botham Jean’s apartment for her own, which was one floor below Jean’s.

Guyger, 31, was convicted of murder for Jean’s September 2018 death.

Dog missing for 12 years reunited with owner after being found 1,130 miles away

If dogs could talk, Dutchess would have quite the story to tell.

The 14-year-old toy fox terrier was reunited with her Florida-based owner on Friday after disappearing 12 years ago. The pup was found more than 1,000 miles away from home in Pittsburgh.

Humane Animal Rescue says it found Dutchess under a shed on Monday. She was hungry, shivering and needed a nail trim.

The rescue center used Dutchess’ microchip to locate her owner, Katheryn Strang, who drove roughly 1,130 miles from Boca Raton to Pittsburgh to reunite with her long-lost pet.

The Humane Animal Rescue posted a video of their reunion.

Strang was in disbelief when she heard the news that Dutchess had been found, she said.

DOG WOKE VETERAN OWNER DURING HOUSE FIRE, SAVING HIS LIFE

Dutchess escaped one day in 2007 when Strang’s son opened the door to leave for school. At the time, Strang and her family lived in Orlando on a busy street; she assumed Dutchess was either hit by a car or picked up by someone.

Strang said she checked local animal shelters every day after her beloved dog went missing. She also continued to pay the annual microchip fee and update her contact information any time the family moved.

“They are like your babies. You don’t give up hope,” Strang said at a press conference after reuniting with Dutchess, murmuring to her dog: “Where have you been?”

‘Serial Stowaway’ arrested after attempting to bypass TSA at O’Hare Airport

The woman dubbed the “Serial Stowaway” for her history of sneaking onto flights without having tickets struck again Friday and was arrested at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport.

Marilyn Hartman, 67, was charged with one felony count of criminal trespass to a registered area at an airport after police say she attempted to bypass a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) lane divider and pass through airport security at O’Hare’s Terminal 1 without a boarding pass or identification.

This isn’t the first flight that Hartman has attempted to board in this manner. This past March, she was given 18 months probation after pleading guilty to sneaking on to a flight from O’Hare to London without a ticket. She was apprehended in London, but just two days after her arrest, she was seen again at O’Hare and was taken into custody when she refused to leave the airport. After that incident, she was banned from entering Chicago’s O’Hare or Midway airports without a boarding pass.

In 2014, Hartman ducked TSA in an attempt to board various flights without a ticket at least eight times.

The family of a missing Utah woman who was last seen Monday say that police in California incorrectly described her disappearance as voluntary.

Family members say Erin Valenti, CEO of Salt-Lake City-based app developer Tinker Ventures, was last seen in Palo Alto, Calif. She was supposedly on her way to the San Jose airport to head home to Salt Lake City.

Valenti’s husband Harrison Weinstein wrote on Facebook that phone activity suggested Valenti was driving in San Jose. She never returned her rental car or made it on her flight back to Utah, and she’s had no phone or credit card activity since Monday.

San Jose police spokesman Sgt. Enrique Garcia told Fox 13 Friday that “at this time, we are treating this case as a voluntary missing person.” However, Valenti’s family says she seemed to be distraught on the night she disappeared. Weinstein and Valenti’s parents told the station that they spoke to her on the phone Monday and she seemed manic, though she has no history of mental illness.

“I get that people have the right to disappear, but that’s not this,” Weinstein told KTVU. “Everything she said she was planning on coming home. She was trying to get to the airport. She’s not thinking clearly.”

“She seemed confused. We said, ‘Did you drink anything?  Did anybody give you anything?’ and she said, ‘No,'” her mother Agnes Valenti said, “But my daughter is so smart and she is such a strong independent lady and this has never happened before.”

Valenti is described as 5-foot-4 with blond hair. She was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and jeans.

2 wounded in shooting at New Hampshire church during wedding

A man with a handgun opened fire in a New Hampshire church during a wedding on Saturday, wounding two people, authorities said.

The perpetrator was subdued after some of the 40 wedding attendees tackled him to the ground. He was not seriously injured, and one guest sustained minor injuries in the struggle.

“Preliminary investigation of the matter indicates that this incident does not appear to be a random event,” authorities said in a statement. It was not clear if the people who were shot were part of the wedding or were attending as guests.
