Minneapolis pastor and church expelled over gay marriage

Leaders of the Evangelical Covenant Church voted to defrock a Minneapolis pastor and expel his church for permitting gay marriage.

The Rev. Dan Collison had his credentials removed by a 77 percent vote at the Evangelical Covenant Church’s annual meeting in Omaha, Nebraska, on Friday night.

Leaders also voted to expel Collison’s First Covenant Church, a founding member of the 134-year-old denomination.

Dan Collison, for permitting gay marriage. First Covenant was a founding member of the 134-year-old denomination. (AP Photo/Jeff Baenen)

Collison, who became a pastor at First Covenant in downtown Minneapolis in 2009, told the Star Tribune he was “not surprised” but “saddened” after he was voted out.

“I feel grounded in the path we have chosen. I feel grateful for the pastors and churches who stood up for us. I feel compassion to those caught in the middle,” Collison said.

The ECC says First Covenant is free to keep operating as a church and can keep its church building. First Covenant says Collison will continue serving as lead pastor.

A First Covenant staff member officiated at an off-site wedding of two women from the church worship band in 2014. It also put out a “love all” statement that said it welcomes members of the LGBTQ community to participate in the church, including serving in leadership roles. It also says it offers pastoral care, including weddings, “to all in our congregation without regard for ability, race, sex, gender identity or sexual orientation.”

ECC leaders also voted Friday night to remove another pastor, Rev. Steve Armfield, a retired Michigan minister who officiated his son’s same-sex wedding in Minneapolis. Armfield also was accused of violating the denomination’s same-sex marriage ban.

Leaders had recommended that Collison, Armfield and First Covenant be forced out because they violated Evangelical Covenant Church policies on human sexuality, specifically “celibacy in singleness and faithfulness in heterosexual marriage.”

“The ECC is mindful of the complexity, the sensitivity and the pain that matters of human sexuality can bring,” said Michelle Sanchez, an ECC executive minister. “We talk about the desire for both freedom and responsibility as a denomination. Those two things were coming into tension in this case.”

First Covenant Church was founded by Swedish immigrants in 1874. For decades it was one of ECC’s largest churches nationally, until membership declines began in the 1970s. Today, the denomination has about 875 churches with 280,000 members nationally. It is headquartered in Chicago.

“I hope this historic church someday changes its mind and then returns to our family,” ECC President John Wenrich said in a statement.

Armfield, an ECC pastor for 47 years, also was suspended in 2017. He had served an ECC church in Red Wing, Minnesota, in the 1970s before moving to Michigan. He officiated his son Matthew Armfield’s wedding in 2017.

“It is so unbelievably upsetting to see my father, Dan, and my fellow members of First Covenant experience the hate, deceit and actions that go against the teachings of love and inclusion that Jesus Christ preached,” said Matthew Armfield, who attends First Covenant.

Two women from southern Oregon were arrested and charged with felony theft of a car and jewelry belonging to Dennis Day, an original Mickey Mouse Club Mouseketeer whose body was discovered in his home in April after he’d been missing for nearly a year.

The Jackson County District Attorney’s Office charged Wanda Garcia and Lori Declusin with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle for allegedly taking a 1990s Ford Escort station wagon that belonged to Day.

Day’s car was discovered on July 26 near the Oregon coast, about 200 miles away from his home, in the possession of two people “unfamiliar” to the couple, but there was no evidence that a crime had been committed or that Day was in the vehicle, Phoenix Police Lt. Jeff Price told Fox News

Garcia is also facing one charge of theft for stealing and selling a brooch belong to Day just days after he was last seen alive in July.

Day, 76, was last seen around July 15, when he reportedly told his husband, Ernie Caswell, who suffers from dementia and lives in an assisted living facility, that he was going to see friends, never to be heard from again.

Construction of border wall panels underway in California

New reinforced panels are being used to strengthen the border wall in the Calexico area of California.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), in partnership with the Army Corps of Engineers, announced a new panel installation on an 11-mile section of wall within the Border Patrol’s San Diego sector on Thursday.

The new panels will replace the existing secondary barrier with 30-foot tall steel bollards as well as technology improvements, according to the CBP.

CBP says the El Centro and San Diego Sectors have been experiencing high levels of illegal-immigrant traffic. They hope this new addition to the wall will help support the Department of Homeland Security in hindering illegal crossings, and in quelling drug and smuggling activities.

Florida authorities are searching for a burglary suspect who’s been wryly christened a “modern-day Hamburglar” because he allegedly broke into two restaurants and cooked himself a snack before stealing from the establishments.

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office released surveillance photos of the man on its Facebook page Friday. He most recently used a brick to smash the door of a Wendy’s in Jensen Beach, started up the grill and cooked himself a burger before taking a safe. the post said.

“A suspect coined as the modern-day Hamburglar doesn’t appear to have any problem making himself right at home after breaking into local food establishments to make himself a burger,” the post read.

The man tried breaking into a third business, a gas station, but couldn’t gain entry. Officials described him as being in his mid-30s, about 6 feet tall with a tattoo on his upper left arm.

He was wearing a baseball cap, khaki shorts and a black tank top during the Wendy’s heist, the sheriff’s office said.

Washington cold case solved using DNA and genetic genealogy results in landmark verdict

A guilty verdict in a 32-year-old cold case in Washington state is being hailed as the first of its kind in the nation.

William Talbott II was identified as a suspect in the case last year through DNA and genetic genealogy. No other case like it had ever before gone to trial.

The jury verdict returned Friday in Everett found Talbott guilty of murder in the 1987 deaths of a young couple from Canada, Jay Cook, 20, and Tanya Van Cuylenborg, 18, who was also raped.

Talbott was identified as a suspect after DNA from the crime scene was uploaded to the public genealogy website GEDMatch. The DNA led to two second cousins of Talbott with similar DNA and then to Talbott after a family tree was constructed.

Detectives obtained Talbott’s DNA after they saw him discard a coffee cup. His DNA matched the crime scene DNA, police said.

“This would not have been solved had it not been for the DNA evidence,” said Cook’s sister, Laura Baanstra, the station reported. “The use of GEDMatch, I hope more people will be willing to allow their DNA on websites so this world can be safer.”

Residents in parts of Northern Ohio are battling a massive swarm of mayflies as thousands of the tiny insects blanketed the state this week.

People living Catawba have taken to social media to share shocking pictures of cars and storefronts covered in the insects which have flocked to the Lake Erie area.

“Think the mayflies are bad in Catawba!” one person wrote on Facebook after sharing a picture of a car completely covered in a swarm, Fox 8 reported.

Another image showed the entrance to a building completely covered by the tiny critters.

The swarm is so large this year that it was picked up by local weather radars on Thursday.

While the images themselves are alarming, mayflies are harmless and are in fact an indication that the lake is extremely clean.

According to Ohio State University, the Environmental Protection Agency in Ohio partly determines the cleanliness of Lake Erie and other Great Lakes based on the insect population. Mayflies breed in clean water only as the larvae live in lake sediments until they hatch in the swarms that many residents are now observing.

Chicago’s oldest pipeline extracted in historic moment

Westlake Legal Group chicago-iStock Chicago's oldest pipeline extracted in historic moment fox-news/us/us-regions/midwest/illinois fox-news/us/energy fox news fnc/us fnc David Aaro cac70c03-7bc6-53d3-ba1e-a078305ad403 article

Chicago pipeline in operation since before the Civil War was honored and excavated as the last of its kind on Friday morning.

The cast-iron gas pipeline had been running from 1859 until just a week ago, when the last customer using it finally switched to a modern natural gas main.

A small working crew extracted the 17-foot-long pipe from a large hole and placed it on a flatbed truck at Hubbard and Orleans streets in River North, in what the city’s cultural historian, Tim Samuelson, called a historical occasion, according to the Chicago Tribune.

CHICAGO POLICE OFFERING $10,000 REWARD FOR INFORMATION ON SUSPECT WHO SHOT OFFICER

“It’s a tremendously big deal to see this amazing bit of history come out of the ground,” Samuelson said.

Back in the 1800s when Chicago had under 112,000 people, the pipeline helped keep residents safe against crime at night by giving the city reliable light.

“Drawing from these pipes you could have a fixture in your house that would give reliable, brilliant light,” Samuelson said. “Dark streets could now have a gas streetlight that would brightly make the street a safe place to walk.”

The excavation was part of the System Modernization Program, created by Peoples Gas in 2011 with the goal of replacing over 2,000 miles of natural gas pipeline in Chicago.

Andy Hesselbach, Peoples Gas vice president of construction, says the new pipelines will be less prone to leaks and this specific one had experienced 30 leaks in the past 30 years.

ERIC TRUMP SAYS CHICAGO RESTAURANT EMPLOYEE SPIT ON HIM: REPORT

“We’ve had a cast-iron system since the 1800s, and over time it has been replaced as we’ve upgraded,” Hesselbach told the Chicago Tribune. “Higher pressures require smaller pipe, and (newer pipes) also have certain safety benefits.”

Days prior to the extraction, workers dug a hole around the pipe, surrounded it in wood and placed bags and stoppers to prevent the flow of gas during the process.

The pipe may be out of the streets, but a portion of it will live on. It’s scheduled to be on display at the Peoples Gas training center, while another will be donated to the Chicago History Museum, according to the Chicago Tribune.

“It’s a gas pipe, but to see the real thing when this was in an era of dirt streets and horse-drawn wagons that evolved into building up things like the Merchandise Mart, and this pipe never went anywhere. Not only was it sitting there, it was supplying the gas to all of these places throughout history,” Samuelson told the Chicago Tribune. “Seeing it come out of the ground, it’s not my usual day at the office.”

Hero 9/11 first responder with cancer dies at 53; testified to Congress with Jon Stewart

A 9/11 first responder has died two weeks after an emotional appearance on Capitol Hill with Jon Stewart, his family said Saturday.

Luis “Lou” Alvarez, a former bomb-squad detective for the NYPD, was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2016 and underwent 69 rounds of chemotherapy. He was 53.

“It is with peace and comfort, that the Alvarez family announce that Luis (Lou) Alvarez, our warrior, has gone home to our Good Lord in heaven today,” the family said. “Please remember his words, ‘Please take care of yourselves and each other.’ We told him at the end that he had won this battle by the many lives he had touched by sharing his three-year battle. He was at peace with that, surrounded by family.”

Alvarerz entered hospice care last week.

Former NYPD cop Luis “Lou” Alvarez testified before Congress June 11 with former “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart. They were there to urge lawmakers to fund the 9/11 Victim’s Compensation Fund.

The hero cop appeared with Stewart, the former “Daily Show” host, before a House committee June 11 to urge congressional action on renewing the 9/11 Victim’s Compensation Fund.

Stewart drew headlines after criticizing lawmakers who failed to attend the hearing.

JON STEWART: 9/11 VICTIMS ARE ‘AT THE END OF THEIR ROPE’ SEEKING HELP FROM CONGRESS
