Florida man jumps off surfboard, lands on shark at ‘shark bite capital of the world’

A man who was surfing at New Smyrna Beach in Florida on Sunday literally jumped the shark when he sprung from his board — onto one of the fearsome fish, according to beach officials.

The unidentified 27-year-old told authorities he was surfing when he jumped into the water, landing on the shark near the beach, dubbed by some to be the “shark bite capital of the world.”

He received minor cuts during the incident, which happened around 1 p.m. at the beach in Volusia County, and was treated at the scene, WOFL reported. The surfer reportedly drove home to Orlando, more than an hour drive away, after the close encounter.

Surfers and beachgoers are reported to have come in contact with sharks often at New Smyrna Beach. In early August, two people were bit by sharks within minutes of each other at the popular beach. Neither bite was life-threatening.

In July, an 18-year-old was bitten on the foot while paddling on her surfboard off the beach, and in April, a 19-year-old was bitten by a shark in the same area.

Volusia County has been a longtime hotspot for shark bites, The Daytona Beach News-Journal reported in April. The county has led the world in recorded bites over the past several years, hitting an all-time high of 15 bites in 2016. It retained the world’s top spot with nine recorded bites in 2017 and again in 2018 with four bites.

Of the 81 bites recorded since 2009, surfers accounted for 52 of the victims, data collected by the paper shows.

Experts have said that New Smyrna Beach’s reputation as one of the most popular surf spots on the East Coast is a factor in the county’s chart-topping numbers.

LeBron James among California wildfire evacuees after blaze erupts near Getty Center in Los Angeles

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James was among the Southern California residents who had to leave their homes as mandatory evacuations were issued early Monday, after a “very dynamic fire” erupted on a hillside near the Getty Center museum, fire officials said.

The Los Angeles Fire Department is urging residents to evacuate the Mountain Gate and Mandeville Canyon communities, between Mandeville Canyon Road and Interstate 405 north of Sunset Blvd., due to the explosive blaze.

The fire erupted around 2 a.m. local time in the Sepulveda Pass along Interstate 405 near the Getty Center Museum community and the hill-top golf community of Mountain Gate. By 7:45 a.m. ET, officials said it had already grown to encompass over 250 acres as more than 470 LAFD firefighters with assistance from neighboring agencies rushed to combat the blaze.

James, one of the NBA’s most prominent athletes, tweeted he had to evacuate from his home after the blaze erupted, calling the fires “no joke.”

“Had to emergency evacuate my house and I’ve been driving around with my family trying to get rooms,” he said, later sharing they were able to find somewhere to accommodate them.”I [pray emoji] for all the families in the area that could be affected by these [fire emojis] now! Pretty please get to safety ASAP.”

Flames could be seen on hillsides, with winds fanning the blaze as it grew rapidly. Helicopters were attempting to conduct airdrops, and the flames appeared to be near large homes in the area of the upscale community of Brentwood.

An evacuation warning was issued in the area from Mulholland Drive to the north, Topanga Canyon to the west, Sunset to the south and Mandeville Canyon to the east, and expanded westward to include parts of Topanga State Park and the Pacific Palisades.

Evacuation centers are open in Westwood and Sherman Oaks.

Videos posted to Twitter by motorists on the 405 showed hillsides engulfed in fire as crews rushed to the scene.

“The 405 freeway a few miles from Santa Monica looks just like a scene in Volcano,” another Twitter user wrote.

“There are mandatory evacuations in place and all residents West of the 405 and South of Sunset need to be vigilant and prepared,” the LAFD tweeted.

Mount Saint Mary’s University tweeted its Chalon campus near the Getty had been evacuated under orders from the LAFD. Students were taken to the school’s Doheny campus. Evacuations were also ordered for 200 people in a care facility next door, FOX11 reported.

Although the Getty Center is nearby, officials say the facility was built with thick walls and doors that should be able to compartmentalize any flames. The Getty Center said on Twitter a “serious brush fire” was burning in the hills north of the facility.

“Currently the fire is moving west and away from the Getty, and we have activated emergency operations,” the museum said, adding that it was preparing to assist emergency responders.

Fire conditions statewide made California “a tinderbox,” said Jonathan Cox, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. Of the state’s 58 counties, 43 were under red flag warnings for high fire danger Sunday, with the threat lasting into Monday.

Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency Friday in response to the wildfires, which have been powered by gusts reaching more than 102 mph.

Kincade Fire rages, aided by hurricane-force winds

The massive Kincade Fire in California’s famed Wine Country burned 84 square miles and forced the evacuations of about 180,000 as firefighters reported a drop in containment from 10 percent to 5 percent by Sunday night.

Cal Fire spokesman told the Sacramento Bee that two firefighters were injured while fighting the fire and fire crews are attempting to “hold the line at Highway 101.” The area on the other side of the highway has not burned since the 1940s, according to the Los Angeles Times.

“It looks pretty ugly out there,” he said.

The entire towns of Healdsburg and Windsor in Sonoma County, north of San Francisco, were under mandatory evacuation as the evacuation zone stretched from Healdsburg west through the Russian River Valley to Bodega Bay, according to the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department.

The Kincade fire has destroyed 94 structures, damaged 17 and threatens an additional 80,000, officials said.

Structures in the famed wine country burned, including some owned by wineries in the Alexander Valley. The Soda Rock winery along State Highway 128 near Healdsburg was consumed early Sunday morning.

Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a statewide emergency.

“The big fear now is Windsor, Healdsburg and holding the line on Highway 101 so we keep it on the east side,” said Newsom, who toured the area and visited hospitals and evacuation centers.

California wildfires, strong winds prompt Newsom to declare state of emergency; 200,000 ordered to evacuate

California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Sunday declared a statewide emergency after multiple wildfires throughout the state prompted the evacuation of nearly 200,000 people from their homes.

Newsom said in a statement that officials were deploying “every resource available” to respond to the wildfires, including a large blaze in Northern California powered by 75-mph wind gusts.

In the Bay Area, two grass fires shut down a stretch of Interstate 80, including a bridge between the cities of Crockett and Vallejo. Fire officials said an ember from one fire possibly sparked the other. In the south, a wildfire in the Santa Clarita area near Los Angeles destroyed 18 structures.

The biggest evacuation was in Northern California’s Sonoma County where 180,000 people were told to pack up and leave. Meanwhile, Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) shut off power to 2.3 million people across 36 counties starting Saturday evening.

State officials, fearing that the winds could blow embers and spread fire across a major highway, expanded evacuation orders that covered parts of Santa Rosa, a city of 175,000 that a wildfire had devastated two years ago.

Sonoma County Sheriff Mark Essick urged people in the evacuation zone to get out immediately, citing the 24 people killed as the fire swept through the region two years ago.

The Kincade Fire, which began Wednesday night and has burned 47 square miles and has destroyed 79 structures, was only 10 percent contained Sunday morning, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said.

Strong winds hit Sunday as gusts reached 93 mph in the hills north of Healdsburg and topped more than 80 mph in many other areas, according to the National Weather Service.

Nine people were injured after heavy winds toppled a 30-foot tree at a farmers’ market in the city of Martinez. Six were taken to a hospital but the injuries were not life-threatening, police said.

The windy conditions were expected to continue through Monday. Fire officials said they feared that if the Kincade Fire crossed U.S. 101, it could ignite an area that hasn’t burned in 80 years.

About 200 people were evacuated from California State University Maritime Academy in Vallejo, 55 miles south of Geyserville where the massive Kincade Fire has been burning.

To the south, a wildfire dubbed the Tick Fire destroyed 18 structures Thursday in an area north of Los Angeles. Nearly all the 50,000 residents ordered to evacuate were allowed back home after Santa Ana winds eased. As of Sunday, the Tick Fire was 65 percent contained.

THOUSANDS ORDERED TO EVACUATE AS WILDFIRES THREATEN LOS ANGELES-AREA NEIGHBORHOODS

What sparked the current fires is unknown. PG&E officials said a 230,000-volt transmission line near Geyserville malfunctioned minutes before that blaze erupted Wednesday night.

The possible link between the wine country fire and a PG&E transmission line was eerily reminiscent of a fire last year when most of the town of Paradise burned, killing 85 people in the deadliest U.S. blaze in a century. State officials concluded a PG&E transmission line sparked the flames.

PG&E said this weekend’s shut-off was affecting about 940,000 homes and businesses. The city of San Francisco was not in line for a blackout amid shut-offs for most of the rest of the San Francisco Bay Area, the wine country and the Sierra foothills.

North Carolina man gets prison time for accidentally killing fellow Marine

A man has been sentenced to prison for his roommate’s death when they were Marines stationed at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.

The sentence of 14-to-26 months was delivered Friday to Tyler Prudden, 30, who had pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the 2013 death of 22-year-old Lance Cpl. LaNija Gilpatrick, according to reports.

He admitted shooting Gilpatrick accidentally after he’d told investigators at first that Gilpatrick accidentally shot himself, the Jacksonville Daily News reported.

Two years after the shooting, Nancy Patterson showed the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office a Facebook message she received that led them to reopen the case, the paper reported.

Prosecutor Bob Roupe said Prudden later admitted pointing a gun he thought was unloaded and firing at Gilpatrick, the Daily News reported. The bullet struck Gilpatrick in the face.

By the time he was arrested, Prudden was no longer a Marine. Gilpatrick joined the Marines in 2010. Prudden was one of the pallbearers at his funeral.

An Arkansas man facing charges of aggravated assault and felony possession of a firearm was captured on video casually walking out of a courtroom, down the hall and out of an Arkansas courthouse on Monday as the jury was deliberating his case.

Surveillance footage showed Joey Watts sitting next to his attorney while on trial at the Grant County Courthouse in Sheridan. He then got up and walked out of the courtroom down the stairs, down the hallway — where he said something to his family waiting nearby — and then left the building.

The jury already had convicted Watts on the assault charge when he decided to make a “run” for it, which Deputy Prosecutor Norman Frisby said Watts’ attorney had not encouraged, Fox 16 reported.

ARKANSAS WOMAN TEXTED FATHER’S NUMBER EVERY DAY AFTER HE DIED, SHE GOT A RESPONSE FOUR YEARS LATER

Watts was accused of using a shotgun to threaten a woman in his home on Nov. 29, 2018, Frisby said.

Grant County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy, Pete Roberts said that Watts had been out on bond — which allowed him to walk around.

“Mainly the fact that he was not in custody, and he was not an inmate, that gave him the freedom to move around throughout the courthouse and things like that,” Roberts said, according to the outlet.

He added the court didn’t have a second bailiff, which he said could prevent this from happening again.

BRAD PITT, OTHERS CAN BE SUED OVER NEW ORLEANS HOMES: JUDGE

“The circuit court is in the process of hiring a new bailiff to prevent that, but they haven’t had that done yet,” he said.

Watts was apprehended on Tuesday evening and he found guilty of both charges the next day. Roberts said three others have been facing charges for allegedly helping him and he believed more arrests will follow.

“We want to make it clear that anyone that helped him is now facing Class C felony charges also,” Roberts said.

Watts was sentenced to 36 years in prison — 10 years for the assault charge and 26 years for possession of a firearm.

Florida begger charged with threatening to beat up woman who wouldn’t give her $1

A Florida panhandler has been charged with threatening to beat up a woman who wouldn’t give her $1 when she asked, according to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.

Melanie Leff, 46, had been panhandling in Bradenton around 6:00 p.m. on Thursday when a bystander allegedly complained to police that Leff had threatened to beat up a woman who refused to give her $1.

Deputies who responded to the scene saw and heard Leff yelling obscenities at someone inside a car stopped at the red light where she had set up shop, according to the Bradenton Herald.

While she was being taken away to the Manatee County jail, deputies told the outlet that Leff “was extremely aggressive and verbally abusive.”

Police arrested her on charges of panhandling and engaging in conduct that implies threat of injury.

Leff was previously arrested twice for the misuse of the 911 system, according to the Miami Herald.

In Dec. 2018, officers spoke with Leff after receiving complaints of her panhandling in the area.

The outlet said when they arrived, Leff allegedly yelled and told the officer she was going to call 911 and he subsequently arrested her for the charge of misuse of the 911 system.

Just 10 minutes later, Leff somehow managed to call the police again from the back of the patrol car, landing her another charge of the same crime, according to the Miami Herald.

The outlet reported that Leff was arrested twice between Nov. 2017 and Jan. 2018 on charges of trespassing, possession of drug paraphernalia and disorderly conduct, as well as another panhandling charge.

A new ordinance was recently passed in Manatee County making it illegal for panhandlers or pedestrians to remain in the median of “highly traveled” roads after an outcry over instances of violence by homeless people in the area, according to the Bradenton Herald.

Michigan professor faces manslaughter rap in autistic son’s backyard pool drowning

A professor in Michigan has been charged with manslaughter in the March accidental drowning death of his 16-year-old autistic son.

Investigators said the boy, Sam Koets, drowned after climbing into an above-ground pool with icy water in the backyard of a Georgetown Township, Mich., home where he lived with his parents and siblings, according to reports.

“There are facts in this case that I think the public will find disturbing,” said Capt. Mark Bennett of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, according to MLive.com.

Timothy Koets, 50, was accused Friday of failing to supervise his son who investigators said had been left alone in the backyard, Fox 17 Grand Rapids reported.

Off-duty Texas cop shoots son after mistaking him for intruder, police say

An off-duty Texas police officer shot his own son on Saturday night after he mistook him for an intruder, authorities said.

The “long-term veteran” officer of the Dallas Police Department arrived at his home in DeSoto on Saturday around 6 p.m. and thought a trespasser was inside.

The “intruder” was his adult son, according to Pete Schulte, a spokesperson for DeSoto police. The police officer called 911 and identified himself as an off-duty Dallas cop.

Investigators arrived to find the son, identified as in his 20s, as”lightly struck by a bullet in his arm.” The officer told authorities he mistook his son for an intruder, Schulte said.

It was a mistake. He thought that there might have been an intruder in the house. He didn’t know who was supposed to be there and so forth,” Schulte said. “It was a startling situation, it was an accident.”

The spokesman said the shooting happened in the garage area of the property. He said the officer got home and noticed “the house was not in the state that he had left it” — the garage door was open, and “some doors were locked that weren’t locked” when he left earlier in the day.

“He thought that maybe something had happened inside and, of course, we did ask the question, ‘Why didn’t you call us, the DeSoto Police Department?’ and like most people say is like, ‘I just wanted to know what was going on before I wasted a call to 911,'” Schulte said the off-duty officer told police.

Authorities, the spokesperson said, want people to know “that if you come home and something doesn’t feel right, [it] doesn’t bother us at all, go ahead and call 911, so we can come out and check it out .”

Schulte said the off-duty officer’s version of events is consistent with evidence at his home, and that no charges have been filed at this time.

Neither the father nor son were identified.
