Puerto Rico hit with 6.5 magnitude earthquake, island-wide blackout reported

A 6.5 magnitude earthquake was registered off the coast of Puerto Rico on Tuesday that reportedly caused an island-wide blackout.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake hit just south of the island at a shallow depth of roughly 6 miles. A tsunami warning was not issued. There was no immediate report of injuries or damage.

The latest earthquake comes less than 24 hours after a 5.8 magnitude quake struck before dawn on Monday\. The earlier quake caused damage to the coastal town of Guanica. It also destroyed the famous Punta Ventana stone arch, an iconic landmark described as a “natural wonder.”

The flurry of quakes in Puerto Rico’s southern region began the night of Dec. 28. Victor Huerfano, director of Puerto Rico’s Seismic Network, told the AP that shallow quakes were occurring along three faults in Puerto Rico’s southwest region: Lajas Valley, Montalva Point and the Guayanilla Canyon.

He said the quakes overall come as the North American plate and the Caribbean plate squeeze Puerto Rico.

One of the largest and most damaging earthquakes to hit Puerto Rico occurred in October 1918, when a magnitude 7.3 quake struck near the island’s northwest coast, unleashing a tsunami and killing 116 people.

Wisconsin driver shoots 2 kids after they threw snowballs at car, cops say

A manhunt is underway for a Milwaukee driver who allegedly shot two children after they threw snowballs at passing vehicles on Saturday.

The Milwaukee Police Department said they responded to a shooting on the 6100 Block of West Birch St around 7:50 p.m., where they found a 12-year-old girl and 13-year-old boy suffering from non-life threatening gunshot wounds.

Officers applied first aid to the victims who are being treated at an area hospital. A manhunt is underway for the driver of a white Toyota, who left the scene of the crime, according to police.

“Preliminary investigation indicates both victims were with a group of juveniles throwing snowballs at cars passing by,” Milwaukee Police wrote on Twitter. “One of the snowballs struck a white Toyota, no further description, and the driver of the auto fired shots into the group of kids striking the two victims.”

Local resident said she heard the shooting and said the driver should “turn himself in.”

“It was like boom, boom, boom, boom all in succession,” she told FOX 6 Milwaukee. “Do you really need to shoot somebody because they shot a snowball?”

Back in December, the town of Wausau, Wis. — located roughly 200 miles northwest of Milwaukee — was thinking of passing an ordinance which would lift a decades-old ban on throwing snowballs. The 1962 ban was made to limit the throwing of rocks and other items that could cause harm on public property, and snowballs were placed into that category.

DELTA FLIGHT SLIDES OF TAXIWAY IN WISCONSIN AIRPORT AMID ‘ICY CONDITIONS’

The Wausau Police Department posted a video of Deputy Chief Matt Barnes back in December, explaining the ordinance was “put in place for a good reason… it’s for the safety of our community” — as police officers threw snowballs behind him.

The department said they issued citations about 10 times in the last 15 years, with two cases involving throwing snowballs at moving vehicles.

“There’s ordinances like this throughout the United States. To individuals in our community: a fun snowball fight is a fun snowball fight, and that’s not something we enforce this ordinance with,” the deputy police chief said.

The Milwaukee Police Department said anyone with more information on the alleged shooting should call them at 414-935-7360, or Milwaukee Crime Stoppers at 414-224-TIPS.

Elephant Walk at Utah Air Force Base showcases 52 F-35s launching in a row

An Air Force base in Utah staged a massive ‘elephant walk’ that featured 52 of one of the country’s most advanced fighter jets launching in a row.

The F-35A II Lightning fighters were part of the Active Duty 388th and Reserve 419th fighter wings at the Hill Air Force Base in the northern part of the state, according to AirForceMag.com. The base is home to 78 of the  Fifth Generation fighters.

“Today’s exercise marks the accomplishment of over four years of work — a little over four years ago, we received our first F-35,” Col. Michael Ebner, 388th Wing vice commander, told the Deseret News. “We now have our full complement of aircraft and locally, we turn this into a goal of full war-fighting capability.”

US DEPLOYS B-52 BOMBERS TO ISLAND IN INDIAN OCEAN

An “elephant walk” refers to the close formation of military aircraft before takeoff.

The base reportedly said the exercise has been planned for months but comes at a time of extreme tension between Iran and the U.S. President  Trump last week ordered the killing of a top general in Tehran. The 388th Fighter Wing tweeted a photo of the rows of jets on the runway and wrote, “We are now at full warfighting capability.”

The 388th is an operational unit that has already sent one F-35A squadron overseas on a deployment to the Middle East. That unit has since returned and a second F-35A squadron from Hill is now deployed in that region.

“The message is not just to potential adversaries, but it’s also to our nation’s leadership that they can count on the 388th Fighter Wing to support the combat power that they plan and require us to provide,” Ebner told the paper.

Indiana men who kidnapped, tortured woman in 2018 get decades in prison

Two Indiana men were sentenced Monday to 40 years behind bars for kidnapping and torturing a woman in 2018, according to reports.

Quantavious Jones and Irving Madden were convicted last month of the kidnapping and torturing a woman inside a home in Indianapolis, Fox 59 reported.

Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears said police responded to a hospital in late October 2018 where a woman was being treated for third-degree burns over 21 percent of her body, multiple facial injuries, and a lacerated liver.

The woman told police that Jones had taken her to a residence in Indianapolis after accusing her of being responsible for the disappearance of a “package,” the Indianapolis Star reported.

On the way home Jones reportedly called Madden and told him to “grab tool chairs and go to the basement,” according to the paper.

Mears said the woman was dragged into the basement, handcuffed to a pole and tortured. He said Jones and Madden beat the woman and threw boiling water on her.

“The torture inflicted on this young woman is unimaginably cruel,” Mears said. “The survivor showed great strength by testifying at trial. That ultimately led to these men being held accountable for this heinous crime.”

A fugitive wanted for more than a decade on child sex charges was recently arrested in Mexico and extradited to California to face trial, FBI officials said Monday.

Silva was charged by the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office on July 20, 2006, but fled the U.S. while on bail, according to the FBI.

In May 2008, the FBI obtained a federal warrant for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution at the request of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department.

Silva evaded authorities until the Mexican government found him in Guadalajara last year. Mexican authorities detained Silva on Aug. 19, 2019, pending extradition to the United States.

FBI agents escorted Silva from Mexico to Sacramento on Friday. He was then remanded to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department for transport to the Sacramento County Jail, according to the agency.

Texas mom Heidi Broussard’s suspected kidnapper allegedly pretended baby was her own, prosecutors say

The  Texas woman arrested in connection with the death of 33-year-old mom Heidi Broussard and the kidnapping of her baby daughter allegedly pretended the little girl, who was born on Nov. 26, was her own, according to an unsealed affidavit.

The affidavit said that Magen Rose Fieramusca “presented Heidi Broussard’s newborn child as her own to her boyfriend,” as KEYE reported.

Investigators have alleged that Fieramusca had been plotting to take the Broussard’s newborn, Margot Carey, pretending to be pregnant at the same time as the victim.

FOX 7 Austin reported that Fieramusca’s Internet search history included: “reasons for Amber Alert,” “Amber alert issued Austin,” and “bodies found in Austin Texas.”

She also allegedly searched for “Heidi Broussard” 162 times.

Florida man, 95, smothered in nursing home by man seen holding pillow over victim’s face, police say

Authorities in Florida are searching for a man who ran from a room at a nursing home early Sunday after a 95-year-old resident was found dead, smothered in the residence.

The Port St. Lucie Police Department said in a news release posted to Facebook that dispatchers received a call around 12:11 a.m. from the Tiffany Hall Nursing and Rehabilitation Center from someone reporting that a patient was “being hurt” by an unknown suspect.

A nurse had walked past a male patient’s room and saw an unknown male suspect sitting on top of the 95-year-old’s chest, holding a pillow over his face, according to police.
