Man accused of standoff, trooper’s shooting indicted

Westlake Legal Group og-fox-news Man accused of standoff, trooper's shooting indicted MCKINNEY, Texas fox-news/us/crime fnc/us fnc Associated Press article 3c0181b1-89af-5114-9636-ccc5d4aa5802

A man accused of shooting a Texas state trooper while fleeing a suburban Dallas traffic stop has been indicted on multiple counts that could, if he’s convicted, send him to prison for life.

A Collin County grand jury returned a seven-count indictment Tuesday against 42-year-old Bryan Matthew Cahill, charging him with four counts of aggravated assault on a public servant with a deadly weapon. The indictment also charges him with assorted other aggravated assault counts and evading arrest.

Police say the March 29 incident began when a state trooper tried to stop Cahill for a traffic violation. Instead, Cahill drove to his Frisco apartment complex, shooting the trooper in the leg while fleeing to his apartment.

A 15-hour standoff ensued before Cahill surrendered. He’s jailed on $3.05 million bond.

The man who became the first U.S. priest to be labeled sexually violent for crimes in Illinois has admitting abusing two boys in Missouri.

Fred Lenczycki pleaded guilty Wednesday to two counts of sodomy for crimes that occurred in the early 1990s. He was serving at a parish in north St. Louis County at the time.

Lenczycki admitted grabbing the genitals of one boy and trying to force the other to expose himself. His sentencing is scheduled for August.

Lenczycki is now 74 and lives in suburban Chicago. Church and court files say he has admitted abusing as many as 30 boys over 25 years in Illinois, Missouri and California.

He was removed from the ministry in 2002, when he was charged with sexually abusing three boys at a church in Hinsdale, Illinois, in the 1980s.

Exotic dancer arrested, charged in the deaths of three Florida teens: reports

An exotic dancer who was allegedly driving drunk when police say she struck and killed three Florida teens Saturday was reportedly charged in the deaths Tuesday night.

Mariam Coulibaly, 31, was arrested Tuesday night at Miami’s Aventura Hospital, where she was being treated for injuries sustained during a car accident over the weekend in which she allegedly swerved off the road in her SUV and ran over the three teens, who were waiting for a bus to take them to a soccer tournament, The Miami Herald reported.

Coulibaly was reportedly charged with three counts of DUI manslaughter and three counts of vehicular homicide, the North Miami Police Department said in a statement according to the New York Post.

FLORIDA DRIVER WHO KILLED 3 TEENS WAS EXOTIC DANCER WITH SUSPENDED LICENSE, SMELLED OF ALCOHOL: REPORT

The victims have been identified as Gideon Desir, 13, Lens Desir, 15, and Richecarde Dumay, 17. They were members of the Little Haiti Football Club and were waiting for a bus at a stop in North Miami early Saturday morning to take them to a tournament in Weston.

Toxicology reports showed that Coulibaly was driving drunk at the time of the accident, police said. Her test results indicated a blood alcohol content nearly double the legal limit about four hours after the wreck, sources told the Herald.

Coulibaly was also said by authorities to have smelled of alcohol immediately following the crash.

Miami-Dade State Attorney Kathy Rundle seemed to confirm these reports in a tweet condemning what she called “a crime” not an “accident.”

“There is no such thing as a DUI accident. Every DUI incident is a crime, an act undertaken by an individual who could have chosen not to drink & drive but instead decided to start the car & go,” Rundle tweeted. “The results are always terrible as the loss of 3 fine young men, Lens Desir, Richecarde Dumay & Gideon Desir so vividly displays.”

Investigators said they believe Coulibaly spent a portion of the night working at a strip club on Biscayne Boulevard and Coulibaly herself allegedly told hospital staff she had been partying leading up to the wreck, the Herald reported.

Coulibaly, who was reportedly driving with a suspended license, has a record of reckless driving, according to the Herald. She has had 42 traffic infractions —  including seven accidents — since 2008.

National spelling bee finals begin with 50 seeking title

The finals of the Scripps National Spelling Bee have begun, with 50 kids on stage competing for more than $50,000 in cash and prizes and a new, custom-designed trophy.

This year’s bee had the biggest field ever, with 562 spellers, more than half of whom got in through Scripps’ wild-card program. Last year was the first time that wild cards were allowed into the bee, and the eventual champion was a wild card.

Thursday’s finalists include nine spellers who finished in at least a tie for 10th last year. The field will be narrowed to about a dozen spellers in the morning and early afternoon before the prime-time finals on ESPN.

The last 14 champions and 19 of the past 23 have been Indian-American.

A Florida man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for killing his wife, whose death was filmed by a security camera at the couple’s home.

The Palm Beach Post reports 34-year-old Dwight Luton was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the 2017 death of 31-year-old Ashley Balius. Riviera Beach police say Luton shot his wife while she sat in a car inside the couple’s driveway and then called police saying Balius had shot herself.

Police say video from a home security camera showed the former firearms dealer point what appears to be a gun at Balius before she slumps over. Responding officers found Balius with a gunshot wound to the side of her head.

A wrongful death lawsuit by Balius’ parents against Luton is ongoing.

Florida teacher allegedly writes ‘WTF is this?’ on student’s homework

A Florida high school teacher raised eyebrows this week after allegedly writing “WTF is this?” on a student’s homework.

Melinda Smith, the student’s mother, told Panama City’s WJHG on Tuesday she was shocked when her son showed her his science homework with the comment: “WTF is this? absolutely no credit” written on top.

“[I]t wasn’t anything about not getting the credit, it was more so the language about the writing to students, that was very inappropriate and not acceptable for a teacher whatsoever,” Smith said.

Gunman accused of shooting ex admits he lied about aiming at bear, authorities say

A Virginia man was arrested Tuesday, accused of deliberately shooting his former boyfriend despite initially telling investigators he had been aiming at a bear, a report said.

Maurice D. Lee, 26, of Suffolk, was charged with one count of assault with intent to commit murder, authorities said, adding that he could get 20 years in prison if convicted.

Lee reported that a shooting had taken place May 12 in the Great Dismal Swamp Refuge, which he visited with the ex, identified by authorities only as M.J., the Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk reported.

When officers arrived, they found M.J. lying face down with a single gunshot wound, the newspaper reported.

Lee told police that when he and M.J. were walking along a trail, a bear began following M.J., so Lee said he attempted to shoot the animal but hit M.J. instead, the newspaper reported.

After M.J. was shot, he told authorities, Lee walked over to him and said, “Oh, you’re still breathing?,” according to the paper.

Lee later admitted lying about the bear story, then claimed instead that the two men were “tussling” when the gun suddenly went off.
