A North Carolina police officer and his suspected killer are dead in a Charlotte suburb.

Mooresville police said Sunday that Officer Jordan Harris Sheldon was shot and killed during a traffic stop around 10 p.m. Saturday. Police say the killer fled the scene and was tracked to his nearby apartment, where officers found the suspect dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The department’s Facebook page says the 32-year-old officer was a six-year veteran. Police Chief Damon Williams identified the gunman as 28-year-old Michael Aldana of Mooresville.

Williams didn’t respond to messages Sunday asking for details, including why Sheldon initially stopped the vehicle.

Mooresville is a town of 38,000 about 30 miles (48.3 kilometers) north of Charlotte.

Rachel Held Evans, a progressive Christian author known for writing the best-selling books “Searching for Sunday” and “Faith Unraveled,” died Saturday in a Tennessee hospital of extensive brain swelling following treatment for an infection, her family said. She was 37.

Evans suffered brain seizures during treatment for an infection in April and was placed in a medically induced coma, her husband, Dan, wrote in a statement on her website. Doctors tried to reduce the swelling in her brain but could not save her.

Evans challenged the evangelical community by addressing sexism and racism and “championing voices of people who have been marginalized in the church,” including the LGBTQ community, said Sarah Bessey, a writer and friend of Evans’.

Evans had said in a blog post that she left the evangelical church in 2014 to focus on building a new church community that would accept women as ministers, gay Christians and “those who refuse to choose between their intellectual integrity and their faith.”

The Muslim American Society says “disturbing” video showing children speaking in Arabic about sacrifice and chopping off heads wasn’t vetted before being posted on its Philadelphia chapter’s Facebook page.

The Middle East Media Research Institute posted a translation Friday.

Two girls are shown reading. One says, “We will sacrifice our souls without hesitation, we will chop off their heads” and liberate the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.

The video also shows children gesticulating to a song known as the “revolutionaries’ anthem,” often played by Islamist groups. The Muslim American Society condemned the words used in the video.

The society says the unnamed school that organized last month’s event is a separate entity that rents space. It says the school board dismissed the person in charge of the program.

A manhunt is currently underway for a gunman who shot multiple people at the Oceano Dunes State Park in San Luis Obispo County, California, on Sunday, according to KSBY.

The San Luis Obispo County Sherriff’s Office (SLO) said the shooting happened just after midnight and no arrests have been made.

The public is asked to stay clear of the area for the time being, KSBY reported.

Ambulances were called and five people have been transported to the hospital, according to a tweet from CAL Fire SLO.

Sheriff spokesman Grace Norris didn’t have an update on the conditions of the five people shot, but she added there were no fatalities so far.

Norris said there was a gathering in the south end of the dunes on Saturday night around the same time of the shooting and police were called just after midnight.

It’s not clear yet if there was more than one shooter, but Norris doesn’t believe the public is at risk.

Detectives stayed on the scene on Sunday conducting interviews and processing evidence.

A set of videos released Friday shows the moment a Connecticut police officer opened fire at an 18-year-old who drove at him after an attempted traffic stop and chase last month that sparked protests by family members and activists.

The police dashcam and surveillance videos show Wethersfield Officer Layau Eulizier shooting through the front windshield of a car being driven at him by Anthony Jose Vega Cruz during an attempted traffic stop on April 20.

Eulizier had run in front of the car, yelling “show me your hands” several times and fired two shots through the windshield of the vehicle when the teenager drove at him.

Eulizier and another officer were trying to pull over Cruz, whose nickname was Chulo, because the license plates on the car were not registered to that vehicle, officials said. The dashcam video released Friday shows another officer, Peter Salvatore, pull Cruz over shortly before the shooting. Cruz and his 18-year-old girlfriend cannot be seen through the tinted driver and passenger windows.

As Salvatore approaches the car on foot, Vega Cruz drives off before he loses control about 10 seconds later when Eulizier, driving from the opposite direction, tries to stop him.

After sliding across the road and skidding 180 degrees, Eulizier rams the vehicle head-on with his SUV cruiser. Cruz then put the car in reverse as Eulizier got out of his cruiser and yelled “show me your hands.” As Vega Cruz backs into the street, Salvatore rams the car, and it comes to a stop.

Hartford State’s Attorney Gail Hardy and Wethersfield officials said they released the videos in the interest of transparency while Hardy determines whether the shooting was justified. Hardy said the investigation is still in its “early stages,” and did not know how long it will take to complete.

“Connecticut State Police continue to gather Wethersfield Police Department policies, evidence and to interview witnesses,” Hardy said in a statement. “I reiterate that this will be a thorough and comprehensive investigation to allow me to determine whether the use of force resulting in the death of Anthony Vega Cruz was justified under the applicable law.”

Wethersfield Mayor Amy Morrin Bello told FOX61 the videos showed “the dangers that our police are involved with every day.”

“We’ve had a lot of public outcry for the video, and I think it is important for people to be able to see it themselves,” she told the television station. “Otherwise there is a lot of misinformation that gets out there.”

Cruz’s family and activists, however, have questioned whether the use of deadly force was necessary and claim that the officer “acted recklessly” when he shot at the unarmed couple.

“We are devastated, enraged, and continue to demand justice for their son and brother,” the lawyers for Cruz’s family, Ben Crump and Michael Jefferson, said in a statement. “The officer must pay for his actions. We urge the State’s Attorney to bring swift justice for this hurting family and criminally charge the officer who killed Chulo.”

Eulizier was placed on paid leave, pending the investigation by state officials.

An Arizona mother accused of starving her 3-year-old son to death and storing his body in a toy chest has been found guilty of first-degree murder and child abuse.

Raquel Barreras, 44, of Tuscon, was convicted on Friday, KGUN-TV reported.

According to the media outlet, prosecutors said Barreras and her husband Martin starved their son Roman and didn’t allow anyone to feed him.

ARIZONA COUPLE ARRESTED AFTER CHILD’S REMAINS FOUND IN TOY CHEST

Barreras pleaded guilty to the crime and her lawyer said she was a drug addict who was struggling financially.

In opening statements, her defense pushed back on claims she murdered her son and said Roman was a “medically compromised” child, according to The Mirror.

The Tucson couple was arrested in March 2014 after human remains believed to be those of their son were found in a plastic toy chest in the backyard of a home where the family had been living.

According to Tucson police, the remains were discovered by a landlord who was cleaning the home as the family was in the process of moving out.

It’s believed Roman died sometime between the spring of 2013 and January 2014 and, the Mirror reported, according to an autopsy report, he died from starvation and neglect.

The couple has four other children.

MOTHER SAYS DAUGHTER WAS BITTEN MORE THAN 25 TIMES AT ARIZONA DAYCARE

In 2014, Authorities said that their three youngest children, who were minors, were turned over to Child Protective Services (CPS).

Police said the other children did not appear to have any signs of abuse, but the children reportedly did not attend school regularly.

Tucson Police Chief Roberto Villasenor said the family had previous contact with CPS and the agency had taken the children away before but returned them to the parents.

In fact, The Arizona Department of Child Safety reportedly removed Roman and three of his older siblings from his parents after his birth in July 2010 due to drug exposure.

However, a year later, Roman was back with his father, who has also been charged with first-degree murder and is scheduled for trial in August.

A Texas bartender accused of serving an intoxicated man who later went on to kill 8 people during a shooting rampage at a football watch party in 2017 was charged Tuesday with a misdemeanor.

Lindsey Glass, 27, was arrested Tuesday and faces a fine up to $500, a year in jail, or both, after allegedly violating a Texas Alcoholic Beverage Code that restricts “sale to certain persons.”

“A person commits an offense if the person with criminal negligence sells an alcoholic beverage to an habitual drunkard or an intoxicated or insane person,” according to the code.

In a Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission report obtained by NBC5, Glass had texted another bartender saying that Hight was in the bar earlier that day and “had 2 gins and he only had 2 beers and a shot when he came back [sic] I think he was at another bar while he was gone.”

She sent another text that read, “Spencer has a big knife on the bar and is spinning it and just asked for his tab and said I have to go do some dirty work … Psychoooooooo,” according to the report obtained by NBC5.

Hight left the bar and barged into the home of his ex-wife, Meredith Hight, killing 8 people before he was shot and killed by police. The Collin County medical examiner’s office found that Hight had a blood alcohol level of 0.33 during the shooting, which is about four times the state’s legal limit for driving. Police said that Glass did later follow Hight to the home and called 911 before leaving, but it wasn’t soon enough.

The defendants have denied the allegations.

In a settlement with the TABC last year, Local Public House agreed to give up its liquor license after the shooting. Under the settlement, the bar’s permit holder didn’t admit to wrongdoing.

“This case shows the critically important role that TABC-licensed businesses play in upholding public safety,” said Bentley Nettles, the commission’s executive director. “Anyone, including customers, business owners, or employees, should contact their local police any time they suspect a threat to the public. In some cases, shootings like this can be stopped before a life is lost.”

Local Public House’s attorney, Ryan Hughes, declined to comment to the Associated Press at the time.

A federal judge in Detroit worked until his recent death at age 96. But one case outlived Damon Keith: the longest-running housing discrimination lawsuit in the United States.

Hamtramck, a tiny Detroit-area city, must provide 200 family housing units to atone for discriminating against black families that were forced out in the 1950s and ’60s.

Hamtramck still has three houses left to build — 48 years after Keith said the city had intentionally removed blacks.

Officials predict the remaining homes could be built this year. Chronic financial problems and political battles had prevented Hamtramck from fulfilling the remedy much earlier.

Mayor Karen Majewski (My-ES’-ski) says it’s unfortunate that the judge won’t see the finish. She says, “The end really is around the corner.”
