Iran denies US shot down Iranian drone; Ilhan Omar’s anti-Israel resolution sparks outrage

Good morning and welcome to Fox News First. Here’s what you need to know as you start your Friday …

What the US downing of an Iranian drone really means
Tensions between the U.S. and Iran have been gradually rising for weeks, and President Trump’s announcement Thursday that a U.S. Navy ship downed an Iranian drone in the Strait of Hormuz only further strained relations between the two countries. Trump said the USS Boxer took defensive action after the drone closed to within 1,000 yards of the warship and ignored multiple calls to stand down — an act the president called “provocative and hostile.”

Iran on Friday denied Trump’s statement. “We have not lost any drone in the Strait of Hormuz nor anywhere else,” tweeted Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. According to Jim Hanson, president of Security Studies Group, who served in the U.S. Army Special Forces, the U.S. sent an important message to Iran: Aggression has consequences and America will strike back when provoked. And President Trump is not former President Obama and will not be compromised by a flawed nuclear deal. Click here to read Hanson’s entire analysis in the Opinion section of Fox News Digital.

House Democrats confront Acting Homeland Security secretary on treatment of migrants
Progressive lawmakers on Thursday grilled the acting Homeland Security secretary about family separations at the U.S-Mexico border, with one member of the “Squad” alleging that Trump administration officials want to prolong the detention of children. Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., at a House Oversight Committee hearing, accused Acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan and fellow administration officials of trying to change the long-standing agreement known as the Flores settlement that governs how immigrant children can be detained, “to keep kids longer” in custody. McAleenan denied the accusation, explaining that he wanted to keep families together for the time necessary it takes for immigration proceedings to go through, and for the justice system to make a ruling on the case. Democrats have slammed the detentions as “inhumane,” while many Republicans have accused the Democrats of hypocrisy, saying they were silent about similar detentions under the Obama administration.

Trump to nominate son of late Supreme Court Justice Scalia for secretary of labor
President Trump on Thursday night announced he’s nominating attorney Gene Scalia, a son of the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, to replace Alex Acosta as secretary of labor. The surprise move was a visible manifestation of the close personal bond Trump has forged with the Scalia family in recent years. The confirmation process for Justice Neil Gorsuch, who ultimately filled Justice Scalia’s seat, sparked the connection. Acosta stepped down as head of the Labor Department last Friday over his past involvement in a cushy 2008 plea deal for financier Jeffrey Epstein, who is now facing federal sex trafficking charges.

Trump lawyers: Why Ilhan Omar’s anti-Israel resolution should be defeated in House
U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., proposed a resolution this week supporting the right to boycott Israel, likening the boycott of the Jewish state to boycotts of Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. Omar’s resolution seeks to push back against U.S. laws banning the boycott of Israel and affirms the right of Americans to organize boycotts of foreign countries if they so wish. While the resolution doesn’t explicitly name Israel or the pro-Palestinian Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, she told media outlets that the resolution concerns the Jewish state. Jay Sekulow and Mark Goldfeder, two members of President Trump’s legal team, argue that Omar’s measure “deserves to go down to overwhelming bipartisan defeat.” Click here to read the entire op-ed by Sekulow and Goldfeder on Fox News Digital.

The New York City Police Department on Thursday released surveillance footage they say shows the suspect they believe threw a fatal sucker punch that led to a man’s death on a Brooklyn boardwalk earlier this month.

FATAL STABBINGS OF MOM, 3 KIDS LEAVE RELATIVES, FRIENDS DEVASTATED; SUSPECT IN CUSTODY, AUTHORITIES SAY

Police responded to reports of an assault at the Riegelman Boardwalk East—a walkway between Brooklyn’s famous Coney Island and Brighton Beach boardwalks—around 5:45 p.m. on July 9, News 12 Brooklyn reported.

Dimitry Goldfarb, 52, was found lying on the ground with head trauma. He was rushed to a nearby hospital and eventually transferred to another one, where he died.

The video released does not show the alleged attack.

The NYPD is asking the public to help them identify the male suspect and the woman seen with him.

Fatal stabbings of mom, 3 kids leave relatives, friends devastated; suspect in custody, authorities say

Friends and family of a 29-year-old Georgia mother and her three children, who were found fatally stabbed in an apartment Wednesday, say the tragedy has come as a total shock to the community, according to reports.

Jerrica Spellman and the children were found dead Wednesday night in a South Columbus apartment complex, WTVM-TV reported. The youngest child was an infant, and the oldest was 3, the report said.

A suspect, identified as 27-year-old Travane Brandon Jackson, has been taken into custody on four counts of family violence, according to the station.

Spellman and Jackson had been in a relationship and lived together in the apartment at the time of the quadruple murder, authorities said. Jackson shares a name with the three children and his believed to be their father, according to police.

Those who knew the couple said Jackson seemed to love his kids and worked several jobs to support them.

“All I know is this, that boy grind for those kids and that’s all he used to promote,” a friend of Jackson’s told WTVM-TV. “Two, three jobs, plus that, definitely a shock. I don’t what’s going, pray for both sides of the family.”

A friend of Spellman’s told the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer that she was “full of love and life.”

“I still really am feeling like it’s not happening,” she said. “She didn’t deserve that at all. She didn’t do wrong to people; she always wanted to see people in good moods. If you were in a bad mood she’d try to do something funny or say something to make you laugh.”

Spellman’s family, meanwhile, have expressed shock, noting that she was a wonderful mother who would do anything for her children. They said there were no distressing signs between the couple.

“Like I said, it’s a senseless act, you know both families lost out,” said a cousin. “Everybody lost someone and something.”

He really rode out the storm.

A bizarre viral video shows a man in a suit being piggy-backed by a woman through water gushing into the Short Hills, New Jersey train station during Wednesday night’s downpour.

Video producer Ashley Maas told The Post she was walking through the station when she saw the man at the bottom of some steps, seemingly frozen in place by the cascading water and rising tide in front of him.

In Maas’ Twitter video of what happened next, an unidentified woman then pops out of the tunnel and the man jumps on her back — getting a water-rescue piggyback ride.

“The man in this video ran off the train with me,” said Maas, who commutes into Manhattan from Jersey.

“I took out my phone to get a video of the water pouring down the steps. I didn’t know the woman was there until the moment in this video happened.”

A man escaped a fire in Philadelphia on Thursday night by scaling least 14 stories down a side of an apartment building, reports said.

Fire crews responded around 9:30 p.m. to reports that smoke was seen coming from the upper floors of a 19-story high-rise in West Philadelphia.

Officials said the fire originated in the trash chute on the first floor and traveled upward, causing heavy smoke to pour into the hallways on the top floors, Philadelphia’s WPVI-TV reported.

Arkansas sheriff’s deputy killed in shooting after responding to domestic call, police say

An Arkansas sheriff’s deputy was one of two people shot and killed Thursday after he responded to a call in a rural part of the state, police said.

Arkansas State Police spokesman Bill Sadler told reporters that Stone County Sheriff’s deputy Sergeant Mike Stephen, 56, was killed when a suspect opened fire as he was responding to a call in Leslie, about 77 miles north of Little Rock.

Sadler said Stephen went to a home at around 8:40 a.m. for a domestic welfare check and “gunfire erupted” while he was talking to a woman outside the house. Sadler added that a man was inside the home at the time and did not indicate who shot first or how many shots were fired.

He said Stephen and a male suspect, who has not yet been identified, were killed. The woman was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

“The State of Arkansas has a heavy heart today,” Sadler told reporters on Thursday. “All too often now we’re getting calls that are resulting in the deaths of law enforcement officers, the individuals who are charged with the duty to keep peace in our communities, counties and across the state.”

“There is no routine call in law enforcement, but what happened this morning began as about as routine as you can get,” Sadler went on. “But anything can happen anytime.”

Stephen had worked in law enforcement for 20 years and was a U.S. Army veteran, according to Stone County deputies. He was also the chief of the Pineville Fire Department.

Fellow deputies called Stephen an “extraordinary leader” who always wanted to be first on the scene.

“It is heartbreaking to hear that Stone County Sheriff’s Deputy Mike Stephen was killed in the line of duty today,” Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson tweeted on Thursday. “My heart goes out to his wife and son, and to his fellow officers and friends in their grief at this tragic loss.”
