After becoming the face of prison reform, Alice Marie Johnson is now the star of an $11 million Super Bowl LIV ad paid for President Trump’s reelection campaign.

The great-grandmother, once sentenced to a lifetime behind bars for nonviolent drug charges, tweeted during the big game as the Kansas City Chiefs took on the San Francisco 49ers, with the ad attached.

“Two Super Bowls ago I was sitting in a prison cell,” she wrote. “Today I am a free woman and my story was featured in a Super Bowl Ad. I will spend the rest of my life fighting for the wrongly and unjustly convicted! God Bless America!”

“Politicians talk about criminal justice reform,” the ad’s text reads. “President Trump got it done. Thousands of families are being reunited.”

Johnson is seen in the commercial thanking Trump and hugging her family.

Trump also tweeted the ad: “I promised to restore hope in America. That includes the least among us. Together, let’s KEEP AMERICA GREAT!”

The First Step Act is Trump’s signature criminal justice reform.

The bipartisan movement to improve public safety and restore second chances came to fruition with the passage of the First Step Act.

Johnson was arrested in 1993 and convicted of drug conspiracy and money laundering in 1996, Mic reported.

A series of life-altering events led to her involvement with cocaine dealers. Johnson never dealt drugs but found herself acting as an intermediary on occasion.

Johnson said that her faith in God got her through her long prison stretch and gave her hope that one day she would get her freedom back.

“I knew that God was going to get me out. So many things he promised me he was constantly doing things — it might seem like small things, but I’d pray for something, and it would materialize. God was speaking to my heart, ‘If I can take care of the small things, trust me with the big thing,’” Johnson told Ainsley Earhardt in an interview that aired on Fox News.

A fight over the teams facing off in Super Bowl LIV ended in a shooting in California that left one person injured, police said.

The Fresno Police Department told FOX26 the incident happened shortly before noon Saturday after a homeless man on a bicycle approached a barbeque in the front yard of a home decorated with 49ers flags and other items.

An argument soon began between the homeless man and another man in his 20s.

As the argument escalated, police told FOX26 the homeless man pulled out a “makeshift weapon” from his backpack and shot the victim in the stomach.

The shooter fled to a nearby homeless encampment, where he was captured by police and arrested.

$123M in fake Super Bowl merch seized by CBP, DHS, ICE ahead of big game

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced a massive, record-breaking seizure of counterfeit Super Bowl merchandise in Miami on Thursday, worth an estimated $123 million were it authentic.

Agents and officers targeted flea markets, retail outlets and street vendors during the week leading up to Super Bowl LIV. Among the seizures were jewelry, hats, phones, fake jerseys and thousands of other items.

The 176,000 counterfeit items were seized during the joint-agency mission, named “Operation Team Player,” which targeted international fraud, according to an ICE press release.

The Homeland Security Investigations’ (HSI’s) Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Center developed the plan and unveiled the results at a news conference alongside the National Football League (NFL), CBP and the Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD).

“Every day, cargo containers containing billions of dollars’ worth of counterfeit goods enter the United States through its land, sea and airports of entry. This year’s record-breaking ‘Operation Team Player’ results affirm HSI’s commitment to protecting American consumers, the economy, and legitimate business, by ensuring Super Bowl 54 is not compromised by transnational criminal networks exploiting fan enthusiasm for illicit profits. Sports fans from around the world, who’ve spent their hard-earned money to support their favorite NFL team, deserve to receive genuine, high-quality officially licensed merchandise in return,” said IPR Center Director Steve Francis.

NFL Vice President of Legal Affairs Dolores DiBella championed the seizure and claimed the operation will protect fans from being duped.

“’Operation Team Player’ remains one of the most important national initiatives for protecting sports fans from the sale of counterfeit products and counterfeit tickets,” she said. “The joint efforts of the NFL, the IPR Center, HSI, CBP, and Miami area law enforcement have helped ensure that Super Bowl LIV remains an authentic and outstanding experience for our fans.”

MDPD Maj. Eric Garcia said fans deserve to know what they are buying and should expect law enforcement to step in and shield them from being defrauded.

“When fans spend their hard-earned money on NFL tickets and merchandise, they deserve the real deal,” he said. “The Miami-Dade Police Department is fully committed to collaborating and partnering with our local, state and federal law enforcement partners to proactively enforce laws related to counterfeit merchandise in order to protect businesses and consumers.”

Gunfire erupted after a funeral Saturday in Florida, killing a teenager and a man and leaving two other people wounded, police said.

Riviera Beach police said in a statement that the shooting happened near the Victory City Church shortly after 2:30 p.m. They said a 15-year-old boy and the man died at the scene. A woman and a teenager were taken to the hospital. Their conditions were not released nor were the names of the victims.

Police said listening devices in the area that detect the sound of gunshots counted 13 rounds fired.

A Chicago man was found beaten in his jail cell at a Cook County prison early Saturday morning and was later pronounced dead, according to officials.

Pedro Ruiz, 19, was physically assaulted overnight and later found to be unresponsive at approximately 1:53 a.m., the Chicago Tribune reported.

Correctional officers at Division IX supermax prison found that Ruiz had suffered severe head trauma and moved his cellmate to another cell, according to Cook County sheriff’s spokesman Joe Ryan.

“Officers immediately began lifesaving measures and Ruiz’s cellmate was secured in handcuffs,’’ he wrote in an email to the Tribune.

The Chicago native was then reportedly taken to Mount Sinai Hospital by fire department paramedics, but he was ultimately pronounced dead.

Ryan did not disclose any information about possible suspects in his email but said an investigation is underway.

French foreign exchange student dies from injuries after Los Angeles high-rise fire

A foreign exchange student from France has died of injuries sustained in a Los Angeles high-rise apartment fire earlier this week.

The victim was identified by authorities as Jeremy Bru, 19. He died Friday evening, according to reports.

Bru and six others – including a three-month-old baby – were hospitalized after a fire tore through the Barrington Plaza apartment complex on Wednesday. Four other people were treated after the fire, mostly for smoke inhalation.

There was no updated word on their conditions Friday.

The cause of the fire, which began on the sixth-floor and spread to two upper floors and one lower floor, was under investigation.

The 25-story building lacked sprinklers.

The building was exempt from having to install sprinklers because it was built before 1974, Fox 11 Los Angeles reported.

Another fire caused damage to the building seven years ago.

Tenants filed a class-action lawsuit Thursday accusing the building’s owner, Douglas Emmett Inc., of negligence. The fire displaces 339 residents.

In response to a request for comment on the lawsuit, the fire and the lack of sprinklers, the company said in statements Friday that its “thoughts and prayers are with those who are injured” and its focus was on getting residents back into their homes.

The company said floors 10 through 25 were cleared for residents to return to their units and residents of the lower floors were being accommodated in hotels until further notice.

Suicide note found from Fotis Dulos, Connecticut man charged in wife’s murder: ‘Enough is enough’

Fotis Dulos, the Connecticut man who had been charged in his wife’s murder, declared his innocence in a handwritten suicide note and wrote that his co-defendants had nothing to with his Jennifer Dulos’ disappearance.

“If you are reading this I am no more,” Fotis said in the neatly written letter, which was obtained by Fox News’ Laura Ingle. “I refuse to spend even an hour more in jail for something I had NOTHING to do with. Enough is enough. If it takes my head to end this, so be it.”

Dulos, 52, died Thursday after a suicide attempt. He had been in critical condition from carbon monoxide poisoning at Jacobi Medical Center in New York City. He was free on a $6 million bond at the time of his suicide. A bond hearing had been scheduled for that day, which could have sent him back to jail.

He faced murder and kidnapping charges in connection to his wife’s disappearance in May 2019. The couple had five children together ranging in age from 8 to 13 years old.

In the note, Dulos goes on to say that his girlfriend, Michelle Troconis, and Kent Mawhinney, a local lawyer who represented him in a civil case, had nothing to do with the disappearance of his wife, Jennifer Dulos.

Troconis and Mawhinney are both charged with conspiracy to commit murder.

“I ask the state to let them free of any such accusations,” Fotis wrote.

Investigators alleged that Jennifer Dulos was killed at her home on May 24, 2019, after she dropped the children off at school. That same day, surveillance footage showed someone in a dark hoodie riding a bike that looked like Fotis Dulos’ from childhood toward Jennifer Dulos’ New Canaan home. Surveillance video also showed someone driving Dulos’ car, leaving her house at 10:25 a.m.

Investigators also said Fotis Dulos’ DNA was discovered on the doorknob of the mudroom in Jennifer Dulos’ home, as well as in a garbage bag police recovered from a trash can in Hartford, where investigators claimed Fotis Dulos dumped evidence of his crime.

In his letter, Fotis Dulos mentioned the couple’s children.

“Please let my children know that I love them, I would do anything to be with them, but unfortunately we all have our limits,” he wrote. “The State will not rest until I rot in jail.”

His lawyer, Norm Pattis, told the Hartford Courant that he filed a motion to continue the case without his client or a body.

“Mr. Dulos insisted from day one that Ms. Troconis wasn’t involved and wanted a joint defense agreement with her. He always spoke of her with the utmost respect,” Pattis said in a statement to the newspaper.

In a court filing Thursday, Pattis said a note had been found in Fotis Dulos’ suburban home in which he “declared his innocence of the infamous and heinous crimes that the state has accused him of and claimed his lawyers have the evidence to prove it.”

Sexual assaults at US military academies rise sharply

Reports of sexual assault at the nation’s military academies rose sharply in the past school year, a new Pentagon survey has found.

The numbers for the 2018-19 school year jumped by one-third over the previous school year, according to the Pentagon’s “Annual Report on Sexual Harassment and Violence at the Military Service Academies.” The Pentagon submitted the report to Congress Thursday.

“Our data last year, and the findings from this years’ report, reflect the progress we have made in some areas, and the significant work that remains,” said Elizabeth Van Winkle, executive director of the Office of Force Resiliency.

Cadets and midshipmen reported 122 sexual assaults in the 2018-19 school year, according to the report.

In 2017-18, the number was 92, a 32 percent jump.

There were 27 additional sexual assaults reported in 2018-19, including some from civilians and active service members, bringing the total to 149 – and up from 117 in 2017-18.

‘SEXUAL ASSAULT CRISIS’: UNWANTED CONTACT REPORTS HIT ALL-TIME HIGH AT COAST GUARD ACADEMY

The Pentagon said it would await a more detailed report in 2021 to decide if the new numbers were signs of a more prevalent problem of sexual assault at the Army, Air Force and Navy academies.

The report cited the academies’ underlying culture tolerant of sexually harassing behavior and alcohol misuse as risk factors for sexual assault.

“Female cadets and midshipmen expressed the perceived need to adapt to social norms to fit in with the ‘boy’s club,’” the authors of the report wrote. “They noted a number of behaviors embedded in the ‘bro’ culture, including sexual jokes, making sexual comments, gestures, or advances, and unwanted touching that they tolerate to be socially accepted.”

An advocate for victims of sexual assault in the military pointed to last year’s report and said this year’s numbers reflect an increase in incidents, not just a greater willingness to report them, USA Today reported.

Don Christensen, president of Protect our Defenders and a former chief prosecutor for the Air Force, told the paper that he didn’t see the report as good news.

“Rather,” he said, “it’s a reflection of a worsening problem.”

Former FBI translator gets probation for doctored transcript

A former FBI translator was sentenced to probation Friday after he admitted doctoring transcripts when his own voice came up on intercepts of phone calls placed by a terrorism suspect.

Abdirizak Wehelie of Burke, Va., also received a $1,000 fine at his sentencing hearing in U.S. District Court in Alexandria.

Wehelie, 68, pleaded guilty in November to making false statements. He admitted he marked himself down as an “unidentified male” when a target of FBI surveillance left a message on Wehelie’s cellphone in 2012, while Wehelie was working as a contract linguist for the FBI.

Sentencing guidelines called for a term of zero to six months.

Wehelie took responsibility for his actions in comments to the judge before he was sentenced.

“Upon hearing my voice on the voicemail, I froze in shock and fear; fear of what it could possibly mean for my family and myself,” Wehelie wrote in a letter to the court.

Wehelie worked as a contractor for the FBI from 2012 to 2015. In December 2012, a man targeted by the FBI in an investigation connected to the Al-Shabab terrorist group in Somalia called and left a voicemail message for Wehelie.

The call was intercepted under court-ordered surveillance, and Wehelie was tasked the next day with translating the call. He marked himself down as “unidentified male” even though the voicemail message on Wehelie’s cellphone identified him as “Abdirizak Wehelie.”

The FBI questioned Wehelie about his actions in 2016. At the time, according to the indictment, Wehelie admitted that he should not have identified himself as an “unidentified male” on that translation. He also told FBI agents he had never actually had a phone conversation with the person who called him and that he didn’t know the person very well. But a subsequent FBI investigation revealed that the two had nearly 180 phone contacts from 2010 to 2017.

“This was a one-time event in which Mr. Wehelie essentially panicked,” said his lawyer, Nina Ginsberg, about the doctored transcript.

The Wehelie family has faced government scrutiny for a decade. Two of Wehelie’s adult children were placed on the no-fly list and denied re-entry to the U.S. for several weeks in 2010, before Abdirizak Wehelie began his work for the FBI.

Yahya and Yusuf Wehelie were the subject of international news coverage that summer when they said they were detained and tortured after traveling to Yemen to learn Arabic. After a delay of several weeks and pressure from Muslim civil rights groups, the brothers were allowed to return to the U.S. later that summer.

In 2017, Yusuf Wehelie was sentenced to 10 years in prison for illegally transporting high-powered weapons in a case where he spoke with an undercover witness about his desire to shoot up a military recruitment center on behalf of the Islamic State group.
